Study and development of sensing techniques and sensors were performed to aid shuttle car drivers in detecting obstacles and in guiding the car along the face haulage route. Microwave, acoustic, and optical sensing techniques were considered as part of the feasibility study for obstacle detection. Various guidance techniques, including wire-following and rib-ranging were investigated. Active optical sensing was selected for obstacle detection to obtain the beam coverage and sharp angular cutoff characteristics required within the packaging limitations defined by the shuttle car configuration. Rib-ranging guidance was selected to achieve a completely self-contained shuttle car system which responds to the existing mine geometry without need for wires, stripes, or other path defining devices. Extensive hybrid computer simulation runs were performed to evaluate various guidance techniques during the feasibility study. Subsequent simulation runs were performed to establish parameter values for the rib-ranging guidance system. The obstacle detection and guidance system was designed, fabricated and installed on a standard shuttle car. The system satisfied all applicable permissibility requirements of Schedule 2G. An experimental permit was issued to Bendix for operation in an underground coal mine. System evaluation tests were performed first above ground at the Bendix Research Laboratories. The simulation model was validated by these runs. Final testing was performed underground in an operating mine with an experienced shuttle car driver. All sensors successfully demonstrated the predicted performance capability during underground face haulage tests. Dust did not impair system performance and lens cleaning was not required during working shifts. Further development is required to achieve the desired obstacle detection performance. Closed loop steering control with manual override is recommended for the lateral guidance system. The guidance system should be an invaluable aid to low-coal shuttle car drivers where continuous mining machines are utilized.

The objective of this study was to determine the magnitude and sources of environmental noise from mining operations near populated areas, to de-scribe monitoring techniques, and to identify applicable existing noise abatement techniques. To this end, noise surveys of a representative sample of mines and quarries were conducted. Noise levels at site boundaries and near specific equipment and ensembles of equipment were measured. Noise exposures in terms of annual day-night sound level were calculated for the boundary noise measurement locations. In addition, the relative sound level contributions were estimated for the mining equipment noise sources affecting the boundary locations. Noise abatement methods falling into three categories were analyzed: equipment practices, operational/administrative practices, and equipment quieting. Selected applications of noise abatement methods were evaluated in hypothetical situations with emphasis upon machinery selection and use. Procedures for measuring noise around mining operations were provided.

The primary objective of this paper is to discuss the hazards and furnish a list of recommendations for the safe operation of quarries and related works. They have been compiled from Bureau of Mines publications covering the safety experience of engineers before and during the year in the mineral industry,5 from a publication of the National Safety Council, Inc.,6 from explosives recommendations made by various explosives manufacturers,7 and from suggestions obtained from quarries visited. The second objective is to describe and illustrate safety devices, practices, and quarrying methods. The quarrying and related industries of the United States had a lower accident-frequency rate than either the metal- or coal-mining industry as reported for 1942.8 However, the quarry industry ranked eleventh in 15 major industries during 1942 in lost-time accident fre¬quency; metal mining ranked fourteenth and coal mining fifteenth.

The domination of Bangladesh's mineral industry by natural gas was in for some possibly significant changes. A modest flow of crude oil was struck in a gas development well in the northeastern corner of the country. This was the first commercial flow of crude oil in Bangladesh. All crude oil was being imported, which cost a significant proportion of the nation's foreign exchange earnings. The development of an oilfield producing only a few thousand barrels per day would be a welcome help to the economy. Additional exploration at a 1985 coal discovery in the northwest indicated a considerable reserve of good-quality coal at a depth suitable for mining. If the coal is mined, it would be a boon to the local economy because natural gas was not available in the area.

Dolomite, heretofore regarded merely as a variety of commonplace limestone, has suddenly attained headline prominence, partly because of the increase in demand for dolomite refractories to line metallurgical furnaces now working at an unprecedented rate of activity, but chiefly because it has become an ore of the light-weight metal, magnesium, needed in vast quantities for the manufacture of war machines. A multitude of inquiries, chiefly from war agencies and prespective operators, for data not only on locations of dolomite deposits but on their size and quality, has made it necessary for the Bureau of Mines to assemble all information available on this important subject. From the Bureau's own records, published information, and correspondence, date on locutions, extent, thickness, accessibility, workability, and chemical composition of high-grade dolomite deposits throughout the United states were accumulated for presentation herein. The report includes about 1,000 tabulations of analyses and a map showing locations of the deposits. The uses of dolomite are discussed in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7192, "Occurrences and Uses of Dolomite in the United-States," published in 1941. The cordial corporation of many State ecological surveys and various individuals who have contributed information is gratefully acknowledged.

Limits of flammability of normal propyl nitrate (NPN) vapor were investigated at ambient and elevated temperatures. Minimum spontaneous ignition and decomposition temperatures were determined with laboratory apparatus over the pressure range from 0 to 4,000 p.s.i.g. Flame speeds and the detonation susceptibility of NPN vapor were measured at elevated temperatures. Stable detonation was obtained with liquid NPN at elevated temperatures, and the detonation velocity was determined to be between 4,700 and 5,100 m./sec.

At the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala., reports are prepared from time to time on results of washability studies of coal from important beds in the Southern Appalachian region. The investigations that provide the material for these reports are made by the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, in cooperation with the University of Alabama and the mine operators. The principal objective of a washability study is to obtain technically and commercially important data to aid in determining the best methods for preparing and utilizing the Nation's reserves, particularly of coking coals. Such information is also important from the standpoint of conservation, because it facilitates the selection of preparation methods that will yield an acceptable product with a minimum loss of coal to the rejects.

Multiple seam mining interactions caused by full extraction mining, whether due to undermining or overmining, frequently involve tensile failure of the affected mine roof. The adverse ground control conditions may prevent mining for both safety and economic reasons. Prior researchers have identified the geometric, geologic and mining factors controlling multiple seam mining interactions. This numerical study examines the mechanics of these interactions using a modeling procedure that 1) incorporates the essential constitutive behavior of the rock such as strain-softening of the intact rock and shear and tensile failure along bedding planes and 2) captures the geologic variability of the rock especially the layering of weak and strong rocks and weak bedding planes. Specifically, the numerical study considered the effect of vertical stress, interburden thickness, and the immediate roof quality of the affected seam in both undermining and overmining situations. The models show that for overburden-to-interburden thickness (OB/IB) ratios of less than 5, interactions do not occur, and that for OB/IB more than 50, extreme interaction is a certainty. In between, the possibility of an interaction was found to depend on gob width-to-interburden thickness ratio, site specific geology and horizontal stress to rock strength ratio in addition to the OB/IB ratio. The models also showed that horizontal stress was profoundly altered well above or below a full extraction area and that these changes are likely to influence the success or failure of multiple seam mining. The role of horizontal stress in multiple seam mining interactions has received little attention in prior investigations. Four factors control the mechanics of multiple seam mining interactions: 1. vertical stress concentration 2. horizontal stress concentration 3. stress re-direction 4. bedding plane slip bands A combination of vertical and horizontal stress increase and high stress gradients in the vicinity of full extraction areas re-orients principal stresses into a very unfavorable direction. This seemingly small stress re-orientation has a profound adverse effect on bedded rock.

Cable bolt supports are becoming an important ground control technique in underground mines in the United States and Canada. They show great versatility and are adaptable for use with many mining techniques, they have high load-carrying capacities, they can be installed in small areas with low roots, and they are cost effective. Investigators in a number of research institutes in North America have conducted studies to assess the material and support properties of cable bolts, evaluate their support capabilities under various mining conditions, and provide design criteria for using cable bolt supports as roof control systems under varying mining conditions. While conducting these studies, personnel have collected important information on the history, application, performance, and economics of these supports. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report documents this information so that ground control personnel unfamiliar with cable bolt supports can gain an understanding and appreciation of their use. A comprehensive bibliography of technical information on cable bolt supports was selected by the authors and is also presented.

Shear tests were performed on several prepared samples of granular and powdery bulk materials to investigate the following parameters: Particle size and distribution, particle movement, moisture content, consolidation of material, bulk density, void ratio, porosity, volume change, and strain rate. A series of shear tests was performed with weight-percent-ratios of minus 0.185-inch tertiary sand and 1-1/2-by l/2-inch tertiary gravel mixtures, and weight-percent-ratios of minus 200-mesh limestone (rock dust) and minus 200-mesh bituminous float coal dust. A comparison was made for shear test results obtained with rectangular and circular shear cells utilizing the large and small direct shear testers. Specifically, the shear results obtained include the angle of internal friction or shear strength of the tested material under known consolidating pressures, and the kinematic angle of friction or coefficient of friction between the interface of a bulk material and a sample wall material. The experimental procedure, tests, and results are given for each parameter investigated.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting research on cable bolt ground supports to assess their material and support properties, to provide design criteria for using cable bolt supports as roof control systems under various types of underground mining conditions, and to provide a mathematical model of cable bolt support systems. Part 1 describes laboratory studies of the support properties of cable bolts made of conventional steel cables and provides recommendations on such topics as the use of thick grouts, selection of breather tubes, and reduction of water bleeding in cement-based grouts. The studies evaluated both single and double cables; effects of different embedment lengths, water-cement ratios, and grout curing temperatures on support strength; effects of use or nonuse of breather tubes; pumpability and water-bleeding properties of grouts; and the strength properties of sand-cement grouts. Part 2 will cover the strength characteristics of birdcage cable bolt supports, epoxy-coated cables, and cables with steel buttons attached.

This report aims to discuss, from the viewpoint of the mining geologist, the bearing of topographic and geologic conditions on cer- tain problems that arose in the construction of the Panama Canal. T+ is published by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to engineer- ing liters ure because it presents information that shows how geology and topography must be considered by the mining engineer in plan- ning excavations and in removing loose material and solid rock in the safest and most efficient manner. The printing of this bulletin has been approved by the governor of the Panama Canal, as it was impracticable for the Panama Canal to give this information to the general public in any of its publications. The "sword cut" of Goethals and his men did not sever the Isth- mian barrier; it merely clove the hills to a depth of 40 feet above sea level. This cut and the great areas of low valleys at both ends of it have been covered with fresh water to the 85-foot level. This high-level lake held by dams at either end, the 85-foot locks, by which ships enter it, and the dredged approaches from the two oceans constitute the Panama Canal. In the preparation of accurate estimates concerning the cost of large excavations information regarding the geologic conditions, as obtained by a study of natural features, is necessary. Drill holes and test pits will furnish supplementary geologic information, but without a gen- eral knowledge of the geologic conditions it will not be possible for the constructing engineer to answer such questions as the following: (1) What rock units will be encountered in the excavation and in what proportion? (2) What will be the cost of drilling each for blasting (3) How far apart and how deep must the drill holes be to efficiently break the rock of each to the proper size-not too fine nor yet too coarse? In this connection jointing, fissuring, bedding, toughness, and other physical characteristics must be considered (4) How steep will the slopes of the excavation stand, and to what extent will they wash and trench on exposure to the atmosphere? (5) What proportion of the material to be excavated is of such physical character that it may be utilized in any other part of the project, such as in concrete construction, road making, wharves, breakwaters, riprap work, etc.

A small-scale laboratory coke oven similar to those described by Swiniarski, Cryan, and Altieri and Fuchs, Sandhoff, Taylor, and Gauger was built by the Bureau of Mines in 1943. Tests made since that time have indicated that such a small oven is of questionable value in predicting the coking pressures to be expected in commercial coke ovens. This summary of the work done has been prepared at the suggestion of the Advisory Committee to the Bureau of Mines-American Gas Association Survey of Carbonizing Prop¬erties of American Coals.

This report presents prediction equations for 12 variables that are indicative of metallurgical coal quality. The variables include six for coke strength and six for carbonization product yields. All variables were predicted for coking coals having volatile matter contents from 16.3 to 42.1 percent, dry basis. The prediction equations, developed by mathematical-statistical techniques, were based on information from the proximate and ultimate analyses, the size consist, and the petrographic composition of bituminous coals carbonized in BM-AGA retorts at 800°, 900°, and 1,000° C. The equations were evaluated for validity with independent data derived from the 900° C carbonization of 33 binary blends of various coals and 22 binary blends of Pocahontas No. 3 low-volatile bituminous coal with 11 high-volatile bituminous coals. Results show that metallurgical coal quality can be predicted ahead of mining because data used to derive the prediction equations can be obtained at the time of exploration. Capability to forecast coal quality is useful in mine planning and should provide basic information for optimization of blending and crushing techniques and thus lead to the production of uniform coke.

"PURPOSE OF REPORTMany bituminous coal-mine officials realize that coal dust presents an ever-present coal-mine explosion hazard, and that persons forced to breathe large quantities of it may be more subject to respiratory infection than persons working in less dusty atmospheres. As an outgrowth of the realization that coal dust should be allayed at its source, many mining companies have expressed the desire to install dust-allaying equipment, and in a number of mines, water or wetting solution is being applied on the cutter bars of mining machines, on mobile loaders, belts or conveyors underground, and tops of mine cars. Spraying equipment also has been installed on dumps to allay dust during dumping operations. Dust-allaying equipment has not been standardized, however, because manufacturers have found that many prospective purchasers of such equipment have different ideas. These manufacturers wish to standardize, so far as feasible, the types and placement of such equipment. Many mine officials, although interested, do not know the best or most effective methods for allaying dust.For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has advocated allaying dust by applying water or, more recently, water modified by a wetting agent on the cutter bar of mining machines and by applying water to loaded and empty mine cars in order to keep as much dust as possible from spilling onto the haulage roads. In recent years this Bureau has also advocated applying water with or without a wetting agent during mechanical loading of coal and during unloading of coal from trackless cars or buggies and from elevating conveyors. It has now become apparent that specific arrangement of pipes, hose, and nozzles should be standardized to at least some extent. It is the purpose of this report, therefore, to give in detail suggested arrangement of dust-allaying equipment in the hope that both manufacturers and mine officials will have available dust-allaying equipment with maximum efficiency to do the desired work."

The problem of removing hydrogen sulphide from natural gas has become within the last few years one of major importance to the natural gas and petroleum industry. Several gas fields in the United States produce natural gas containing hydrogen sulphide, and a number of oil fields produce gas which contains hydrogen sulphide. 3 The percentage of hydrogen sulphide in natural gas produced in these fields varies from a fraction of 1 per cent t6 as high as 20.5 per cent by volume. 4 Hydrogen sulphide is probably the most toxic gas associated with natural gas,5 and from the standpoint of health and safety it is important that the hydrogen sulphide be removed if the gas is to be used for domestic purposes. Hydrogen sulphide, besides being toxic and therefore a hazard to animal life, is under certain conditions an active corrosive agent and very destructive to equipment. 6 The annual loss caused by the corrosive action of hydrogen sulphide on equipment amounts to hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of dollars. 7 The largest percentage of natural gas produced in the United States comes from wells which also produce oil. This associated gas invariably carries with it light fractions of petroleum, which when separated from the gas, condense to the liquid form at ordinary temperatures and pressure. Commercial application is made of this natural condition, and "wet gas" is processed to obtain so-called natural gasoline by employing the principles of absorption, adsorption, or compression and subsequent expansion accompanied by cooling. Several processes for the production of ultra-clean coal for electrode carbon were developed in Germany prior to and during World War II . These processes have been investigated since the end of the war by the British and U. S. Government missions . As the reports of the investigations are not readily available to the public , it is the purpose of this paper to present the information which has been obtained regarding the methods by which ultraclean coal was produced . Almost all the ultra-clean coal was used in the manufacture of electrodes for the production of aluminum and magnesium . Standard raw materials for making these electrodes are pitch coke and petroleum coke , which are nearly ashless . The inclusion of ash in the electrode carbon results in lowered efficiency and impure metal from the reduction process . Petroleum coke and pitch coke were in very short supply in Germany during the war , so that it was necessary to augment the supply with carbon produced from coal . In the emergency , methods were developed to clean coal which had never before been economically feasible . However , a demand for nearly ash-free coal might develop in the United States if a shortage of petroleum coke were to occur at the same time as a strong demand for light metals . Other uses of ultraclean coal are in direct hydrogenation of coal , in production of activated carbon, and for special fuels . Specifications for electrode carbon are rather severe owing to the necessity for producing pure metal . Maximum amounts of impurities allowable in American practice are as follows : Total ash , 1.0 percent ( in finished coke , 0.7 percent ) Silica , 0.08 percent Ca or Na, or their sum , 0.12 percent Sulfur , 2.0 percent Ba , Ni , Cr , Mn , Co , and V are objectionable in very small amounts . The most important process for ultra cleaning of coal in Germany was froth flotation . Froth flotation had been used widely there to process washery -water sludges and to recover coking coal from high - ash fines . Its use was indicated , therefore , when the demand for ultra low-ash coal arose . In two plants the coal cleaned by froth flotation was treated with acid or caustic to lower further the ash content . Another process used on an industrial scale was that of dissolving the coal substance in the middle oil from direct hydrogenation of coal under controlled pressure and temperature . The resulting paste was heated, filtered , and the oil distilled off . The residue was a low-ash organic material that could be carbonized for electrode carbon or could be hydrogenated directly . Several other processes had been developed to the laboratory or pilot - plant stage but had never been used on a commercial scale . These processes included cleaning by centrifugal action , cleaning by electrostatic action , and cleaning by forming a paste with oil in water . The coal-preparation plants at the Carl Alexander mine , Augusta Viktoria mine , and Kőenigin Elisabeth mine are described in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 7389 : " Coal Preparation Practice in Western Germany" , by Thomas . Many oil-producing formations contain significant amounts of clay. Because of the large surface area and reactivity of such surfaces, the response of the formations to various recovery processes may be dominated by the reactions of fine-grained minerals, including clay minerals, in the formations. Thus, the success or failure of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) methods may be controlled to a large extent by the amount and nature of these minerals in the formations to which the methods are being applied. One of the deterrents to the successful application of chemical EOR methods is the loss of chemicals injected into the formation, to non-oil recovery processes. These chemical loss processes include adsorption onto mineral surfaces, chemical reactions with rock and fluids in the formations, possibly leading to precipitation and plugging of the formation, and trapping of chemicals in parts of the rock structure so that they become unavailable for displacing oil. Chemicals that may be injected include surfactants, polymers and caustic solutions which react with organic acids in the crude oil to produce surfactants in-situ. These losses are most pronounced in fine-grained reservoir rocks containing substantial amounts of clays.

This paper is one of a series covering mineral resources of the Nation . It describes briefly most of the known manganese deposits of eastern Arizona , which for the purpose of this report includes the counties of Navajo , Apache , Gila, Graham, Greenlee , Pinal , Pima , Santa Cruz , and Cochise . With few exceptions , these descriptions are the result of field examinations by the writers . Work on this paper was begun in May 1956 , and in the following 18 months 151 deposits were examined . The distribution of the deposits by counties is as follows : 1 in Navajo , and 1 in Apache , 37 in Gila , 4 in Graham, 13 in Greenlee , 25 in Pinal , 13 in Pima , 12 in Santa Cruz , and 45 in Cochise . In surveyed areas the locations of the deposits are described by section , township , and range and in unsurveyed areas , by approximate projections of these subdivisions . The township and range numbers refer to the Gila and Salt River base and meridian . The history, production, ownership , geologic setting , and mining methods used are discussed for most of the deposits that were visited . Probably , some occurrences have been overlooked , but all of the principal ones have been examined . Ore dressing studies were made of typical ores from several of the larger districts . The work was performed in the laboratory of the Bureau of Mines Tucson Metallurgy Research Laboratory . The results of these studies are given with the descriptions of the deposits from which the samples were taken .
