"The Main zone of the Clarence Stream gold deposit is hosted by a shear zone adjacent to the Saint George batholith in southwestern New Brunswick. The mineralization history relates to progressive deformation in the shear zone and the intrusion of the Magaguadavic granodiorite.Of three phases of deformation that have affected the area (D1-D3), D1 is not observed in the Clarence Stream shear zone. Two suites of igneous rocks intrude the shear zone: post-D2, pre-D3 gabbro; and granitic dikes, which crosscut the gabbros. Granitic dikes show a diverse range of relationships to D3 features, from pre-syn-D3 mylonitic fabrics in transposed and highly deformed enclaves, to nondeformed and entirely discordant dikes (post-D3).A variety of veins occur within this shear zone. Zoisite-bearing and later, crosscutting epidote-bearing veins are preserved as relics in quartz-mylonites, and predate quartz veins that host gold mineralization. The epidote-bearing veins are associated with pseudotachylitic cataclasite dikes, consistent with transient brittle failure during ductile deformation.Deformation relates to right-lateral strike-slip motion across the shear zone, and subhorizontal and near-vertical stretching lineations imply transpression. A late (late- or post-D3) dip-slip phase of motion is also apparent, and cooling followed a metamorphic peak early in D2-D3 history. Deformation of the shear zone, and more localized transient brittle failure, provided the permeability for fluid movement and vein emplacement. This scenario is similar to the findings of other studies, in which geochemical, tracer isotopic, and age-dating (U/Pb, 40Ar/39Ar) results suggest that the adjacent Magaguadavic granodiorite provided heat and metals. Les veines d’épidote sont associées à des dykes de catacalasite à texture de pseudotachylite, compatibles avec une rupture cassante épisodique durant la déformation ductile.La déformation résulte d’un mouvement décrochant dextre le long de la zone de cisaillement et les linéations d’étirement subhorizontales et quasi-verticales impliquent de la transpression. Une phase tardive (tardi- ou post-D3) de mouvement selon le pendage est aussi apparente, et le refroidissement succède à un pic métamorphique tôt dans l’histoire D2-D3. La déformation de la zone de cisaillement et la rupture cassante épisodique ont fourni la perméabilité nécessaire au mouvement des fluides et à la mise en place des veines. "A major challenge of contemporary exploration geochemistry is the development of procedures that can locate blind mineralization or mineralization that sub-crops below a cover of transported overburden, the composition of which bears no relation to the underlying mineralization. Over the past few years, the possible existence of diagnostic geochemical features in the country rock associated with volcanogenic massive sulphide deposits has attracted increasing attention both on the local mine scale and on the regional scale. In the present investigation, the nature of the geochemistry of a number of Archean greenstone belts of the Canadian Shield is examined to determine the feasibility of distinguishing productive from non-productive areas of copper-zinc mineralization. The results indicate that productive areas are distinguishable from non-productive areas providing consideration is given to the effects of igneous differentiation on rock compositionIntroductionArchean massive sulphide deposits are an important source of copper and zinc, and to a lesser extent silver and gold, particularly in Canada. As in the case of most other forms of mineralization, there is a continual need to develop new techniques that will improve the chances of success in the search for these deposits. The majority of Archean areas in the northern latitudes are overlain by a variable cover of glacial overburden. Considerable progress has been made in the development of new geochemical exploration techniques for use in glaciated terrain, based on the detection of anomalous dispersion in the glacial overburden. In certain situations, however, as in the search for blind deposits or in areas covered by glaciolacustrine deposits, overburden geochemistry offers little hope for success. In the case of massive sulphide deposits, one possible solution may lie in the detection of anomalous geochemical signatures in the bedrock. Recognizing this possibility, attention has been directed to the investigation of the nature of lithogeochemical dispersion associated with massive sulphide deposits on both regional and local scales, to establish the potential of lithogeochemistry as an aid in the search for these deposits."

"Abstract- This paper discusses what appears to be a flaw in the current belief, widely held within the gold mining industry and investment community, that the creation of ever-larger gold mining companies is desirable for mining companies and investors alike. The basis of the flaw is in the underlying assumption that very large gold producers can discover or acquire new gold deposits of the size necessary to replace extracted reserves on a year-on-year basis over the intermediate to long term (i.e., five to ten years and longer). As it will be noted in this paper, deposits of the size required to replace annual production of very large gold producers (VLGPs) are relatively few in number. Although discoveries of new gold deposits continue to be made, they are predominantly in the 0.5 to 2.0 million ounce range. Data represented here suggest that, although gold production from individual VLGPs continues to increase, the change is due to merging or acquiring other companies or projects with similar reserve life profiles. Therefore, the reserve life profiles of VLGPs have remained flat or have decreased.The paper will note recent changes in the industry and the remarkable increase in gold production reported by individual mining companies over the past several years. It will provide an overview of the geographical and geological distribution of known gold deposits and the range of deposit sizes. Finally, the paper will discuss the challenges that face large gold producers in replenishing their reserves that are being depleted at an ever-increasing rate. "While pipeline hydrotransport is often the most economical way to transport large volumes of mineral concentrate, tailings, or fine ore slurry over long distances, it is in mountainous terrain that pipelining becomes particularly attractive. These areas are often remote, with limited existing infrastructure and few potential users willing to share in the cost of new infrastructure. The rugged terrain makes the construction of railways or roads suitable for haul trucks difficult and expensive. The elevation difference between the mine and the terminal means that the empty trains or haul trucks need to return up-hill, resulting in high fuel costs. With pipelines, this elevation difference may reduce or even eliminate the need for pumping. As a result, numerous pipelines have been built, or are being considered, in mountainous regions around the world including: Tasmania, New Guinea, China, Madagascar, the Rockies of North America, and the Andes of South America. However, there are technical difficulties that need to be overcome in the design and operation of mountain pipelines that do not affect pipelines on more level terrain. This presentation reviews some of these difficulties and methods used to overcome them.INTRODUCTIONPipeline transport of solid-liquid slurry (“hydrotransport”) is an important and cost-effective means of transporting large volumes of solids over long distances, especially from a single supplier to a single user (e.g., a concentrator to a port, a concentrator to a tailings dam, or a coal mine to a power plant). Pipelines are generally found to be more economically attractive than alternate transportation methods (e.g. trucking, rail, conveyors, shipping, or some combination) over the life of a project (Aude et al. 1974).Hydrotransport systems have been built in a variety of terrains, but it is in mountainous regions that pipelining becomes particularly attractive. These regions are often remote and generally do not have existing transportation infrastructure (roads, railways, navigable rivers). There are few potential users (e.g., farmers, other mines, forestry companies, etc.) who may be willing to share in the cost of new infrastructure. NO DEPRECIATION/GAAPAll calculations and computations relating to the Royalty shall be carried out in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles consistently applied to the extent that such principles are not inconsistent with the provisions of this Schedule and the agreement attached hereto, it being specifically agreed that nothing herein contained shall permit, or be construed to permit, the Operator to deduct any amount for depletion, depreciation, amortization or any deduction that represents a non-cash outlay.Comment: In cases like net profit royalties where recoupment of prior expenditures is permitted, care should be taken to avoid any implication that depreciation may also be taken. It is only logical and equitable that Property Owners should not be permitted an apparent ability to “double dip” with respect to deductions. A provision like this example should accomplish the task. It will be noted that the example specifically contemplates that the negotiated arrangements will prevail over any requirements of GAAP. Accordingly, if the parties agree to an unusual formula for recoupment, it will not be set aside to accommodate GAAP requirements. Under GAAP, revenues and expenditures are accounted for on an accrual basis. In addition, it specifically prohibits the taking of non-cash deductions, which is in keeping with the concept of recoupment.Although in some ways the example states the obvious and could be considered redundant, its presence, especially in provisions contemplating recoupment, makes it clear to the financial people that there may well be some variations from normal practices dictated by GAAP, while at the same time confirming the availability of GAAP to fill any voids.The accounting profession often makes the caveat that application of GAAP is an “art”, not a “science”. GAAP do not provide a cure-all and can create problems that will have to be addressed. For example, GAAP contemplate that asset costs are to be reduced by investment tax credits, which can cause a problem for a payor with more than one mine."

During the process of developing surface or underground mines, some sites are considered for dumping of surface soils, while others are applied to reclaiming surface and waste disposal. For each kind of overburden, whether it be waste rock, low-grade material, or process tails, a separate storage site is considered so that it becomes possible to transport or recover the overburden separately. Decision-making must be completed by means of a selection process which takes into account the best methods of alternative sets in order to achieve these goals. This decision- making involves many parameters that are inter-related in that changes in some parameters affect the others. There are many methods of decision-making, however, Fuzzy Multi-attribute Decision-making (FMADM) and its functions are studied in this paper. The advantages of this method lies in its theoretical background, formulation, revising capability, unlimited alternatives, and consideration of the counteraction of the different parameters upon one another.

"A flotation bank consists of a serial arrangement of cells. How to optimally operate a bank remains a challenge. This article reviews three strategies for optimizing bank performance: air profiling, mass-pull (froth velocity) profiling and Peak Air Recovery (PAR) profiling. These are all ways of manipulating the recovery profile down a bank, which may be the property being exploited. Mathematical analysis has shown that a flat cell-by-cell recovery profile maximizes the separation of two floatable minerals for a given target bank recovery when the relative floatability is constant down the bank. Available bank survey data is analyzed in respect to recovery profiling. Possible variations on recovery profile to minimize entrainment are discussed.INTRODUCTION Flotation is used to separate valuable minerals from each other and from gangue. To reach a target metallurgical performance, usually assessed in terms of concentrate grade and recovery, feed is passed through stages such as roughing, cleaning and scavenging. All these stages comprise serial arrangements of flotation cells known as banks, lines or rows. Although a bank is the simplest interconnection of cells in a circuit, i.e. the tails of one cell is the feed to the next cell down the bank, how to operate each flotation cell in a way that the whole bank performance is optimized remains a challenge. Significant efforts have been made towards understanding the effect of operating variables on the flotation performance of an isolated cell (Lynch et al., 1981; Finch and Dobby, 1990; Gorain et al., 1998). However in the case of banks the variables that can be manipulated increase with the number of cells in the bank and the problem of how to manipulate them to achieve optimum performance is difficult even disregarding variation in ore characteristics (Lynch et al., 1981, p. 16). In general, the more manipulated variables available the better for optimization purposes, however without clear guidance how to effectively use them it becomes an “embarrassment of riches”."

"In 2007, Noront Resources Inc. discovered the high grade nickel copper PGE deposit in northwestern Ontario in a region now known as the Ring of Fire. Since the initial discovery, Noront has advanced the Eagle¹s Nest Project and in September 2012 released a feasibility study for the development of the Eagle¹s Nest Project. This paper summarizes the results of this recent study and outlines additional work planned in the next stages of project development. INTRODUCTIONThe following paper summarizes the findings of the recently completed feasibility study on Noront Resources Ltd.’s Eagle’s Nest Project. The feasibility study was compiled into a NI 43-101 report by Micon International. This paper is intended to summarize the major technical findings and for complete information, interested parties can find the entire NI 43-101 report at www.norontresources.com or on SEDAR.LOCATIONThe McFaulds Lake project area, which includes the Eagle’s Nest deposit, is located at approximately UTM 5844000 N and 547000 E, and between approximately 52º42’ and 52º50’ N latitude and 86º06’ and 86º24’ W longitude, approximately 250 km west of the community of Attawapiskat on James Bay and 575 km northwest of Timmins. The closest all-season accessible community to the McFaulds Lake project area is Nakina, 300 km to the south, where there is a paved airstrip, in addition to all weather road and railroad access (see Figure 1).The First Nations communities of Webequie and Ogoki/Marten Falls are located 90 km west and 120 km south southeast of McFaulds Lake, respectively. Both communities are served by regularly scheduled air service, primarily from Thunder Bay; both Thunder Bay and Timmins serve as support centres for the James Bay communities and the exploration projects in the area."

The construction, commissioning and operation of a continuous pilot-scale selective agglomeration (oil agglomeration) unit are described. This plant has been used to recover fine coal from an effluent stream that is produced by a jig plant which scalps the coal from a New South Wales (Australia) colliery. The reject slurry is extremely fine (66.5% minus 53 um) and has an ash content of approximately 40%. The pilot plant can treat up to 0.3 tonne/h of this slurry, producing average product ashes as low as 9.1% and tailings ashes greater than 80%. The average yield observed was62%, which corresponded to a recovery of coal material of 88%. The operation of this pilot plant yielded data that enabled an economic assessment of this type of processing to be carried out. This study showed that selective agglomeration is an economically viable process for eliminating the substantial losses of coal to tailings ponds and minimizing consequent disposal and environmental problems. A commercial plant has been constructed and commissioned on the basis of the data obtained from this pilot-scale operation.

"A unique deposit of barite exists near Brookfield, Nova Scotia. The crystals are extremely fine and the whole deposit virtually free of heavy metals. The deposit size was not large enough for conventional uses, such as the production of barium carbonate and drilling mud. In an effort to obtain maximum utilization, a program was begun to determine if U.S.P.-grade pharmaceutical barium sulphate for X-ray diagnosis could be produced. Early work was sufficiently encouraging to institute a development program under the federal Program for Advancement of Industrial Technology. This has been very successfully completed. Canadian and U.S. process patents have been issued, clinical trials have been successful, a production plant has been designed and the plant’s production sold. The processing plant will include magnetic separation for the removal of iron minerals, fine grinding by paddle milling to minus one micron and acid leaching. The process is unique in that at no time is the barium taken into solution.Information is given on the deposit, process, markets, use, plant capital and operating costs, and projected profits. The initial production plant will have an annual capacity of 2,000 tons per year of end product. Capital cost is $850,000 and annual turnover more than $1.5 million. As this capacity only represents approximately 15% of the North American market, rapid plant expansion is foreseen."

"Industry practice for defining acid consumption is based on column tests. Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) has adopted a practice of leach operation using a defined pH or gpl acid in the raffinate based on the column test program. The acid consumption can be easily calculated using the leach operating parameters of SX-EW efficiency, lift height, bulk density, irrigation rate, primary leach cycle time, acid cure dose and acid concentration in the raffinate. The column leach test results and a column to heap efficiency factor are used to define the copper extraction. The maximum acid consumption will occur when zero acid is contained in the raffinate. The term Net Extracted Value (NEV) is to define the maximum extracted value relative to acid consumed.This paper presents the operating logic and method used to calculate acid consumption based on column tests and operating parameters.INTRODUCTIONIndustry practice for defining acid consumption is based on column tests. This may result in lower economic value if the tests are not designed to account for operating variables. A test program is described to assist in defining lift height and the influence of gangue on solution chemistry. A simple spreadsheet is presented that will use the leach operating parameters of SXEW efficiency, lift height, bulk density, irrigation rate, primary leach cycle time, acid cure dose and acid concentration in the raffinate to calculate the acid consumption for a proposed operation.A review of current leach operations solution chemistry will help to define acid consumption. This is recommended for all current leach operations.DISCUSSIONThe current practice at Freeport-McMoRan (FCX) is the use of column test results to define operating parameters. The monitoring of operational solution chemistry and copper production addresses any changes needed in operational parameters. This practice maximizes the value extracted from each tonne of ore leached."

"The gravity-recoverable gold (GRG) ore characterization test was developed 15 years ago and has been applied to hundreds of ore samples. The test accurately determines the size distribution of GRG, at which grind it is recoverable, and the extent of its liberation above 150 µm. This contribution shows how the test can be simplified, what are the likely problems to occur, and what information is then lost. Two simplified versions of the test are presented, of which the simplest, grinding a 20-kg sample to a P80 of 75 µm, is retained as the best one. A database of 18 comparative tests is presented. The choice of the full GRG test vs. the simple test is discussed, as is the deportment of the GRG recovered in the standard test but not in the simplest test.INTRODUCTIONThe GRG test was developed in 1990 to characterize the progressive liberation of gold in representative samples of ores, with the primary objective of generating data for a gold gravity recovery model (Woodcock and Laplante, 1993; Laplante et al., 2000). Characterization includes the size distribution of GRG as well as the grind size at which it becomes recoverable. This is achieved in a 3-stage protocol of liberation and recovery using a laboratory centrifuge unit, a Laboratory Knelson Concentrator 3 inches in diameter (KC MD3). This protocol is shown in Figure 1. The first stage takes place at a F100 of 850 ?m (F80 of ~550 ?m), the second at F80 of 180 ?m, and the third at a P80 of 75 ?m. The rationale for the three cycles is the desire to preserve the original size distribution of the gold grains in the ore and to obtain a recovery grind size curve. The feed is a representative sample of ore that can be extracted from ore samples (e.g. drill core reject) or stream products of the grinding circuit other than circulating loads or product having undergone hydraulic classification (e.g. rod mill discharge or SAG screen undersize). Ideally the samples should weigh between 60 and 100 kg, depending on feed grade and gold top size. It is beyond the scope of this paper to fully discuss measures of representativity in the ore sample, for example Gy’s minimum sample mass model (Gy, 1979). However, further work in this regard may be an opportunity. The large initial weight facilitates representativity and minimizes weight and sulphide recovery to the concentrate (since concentrate weight is relatively constant at ~100 g), which limits the recovery of gold in nonsulphide gangue or gold carriers (i.e. sulphides). Thus, the 100 g concentrate carries principally discrete gold species, such as electrum, and native gold. The concentrate and a 600-g representative sample of gangue of each stage are screened down to 20 ?m and each size class is fire assayed (the concentrates to extinction, the tails up to 30 g per size class). The five coarsest size fractions of stage-1 concentrate are individually upgraded using a hydrosizer and the concentrates examined with an optical microscope to assess the degree of liberation of the gold phase. Scanning electron microscope work has established that the GRG has an excellent degree of liberation below 150 ?m in stage 1 and generally a good degree of liberation in stages 2 and 3 (Guerney et al., 2003); as a result the size distribution of the GRG has been found to approach closely that of gold grains (Nesset et al. 2005)."

Long term mine scheduling is one of the most difficult optimization problems. The problem is said to be NP-complete in that the best possible solution cannot be found any quicker than checking all possible permutations and combinations. In current mining operations, it is important to report changes in long term plans as soon and as accurately as possible. Where geological data can change rapidly, such as in narrow vein deposits, the need to quickly identify and optimize different long term alternatives becomes a difficult task and can lead to many permutations of the long term mine plan. The question arises, is the new plan optimal or not? Can the company objectives be met while adhering to operational constraints? Although a number of optimization techniques have been used in the past, many include significant simplifications or fail to produce acceptable results within the required timeframe. Genetic Algorithms (GAs) are among the most promising optimization techniques within operations research. They are based on natural selection and evolution of solutions to complex problems. They have been known to quickly converge within a few percent of the optimal solution by examining only a fraction of the possible permutations. The GA itself contains very little problem specific information and, as such, in this study, has been linked to a discrete-event simulation (DES). The DES is able to evaluate each sequence proposed by the GA and determine the effectiveness and value of each schedule. The DES feeds information regarding the feasibility and quality of the solutions back to the GA during the optimization process. In this paper, GAs and DES are described and the coupling of the two methods is outlined. The GADES module is then used to ?optimize? a narrow vein theoretical case study and the results discussed in a broader mining context.

Quantitative determination of gold at sub-ppm concentrations in sulphide minerals is an important component of deportment studies for sulphide-gold deposits. Laser Ablation Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analysis is preferred for this application because it rapidly and cost-effectively provides spatially resolved (<20 pm), low ppb concentration data for gold and other elements in mineral grains. Recent advances in LA-ICP-MS analysis include the development and application of elemental mapping. Raw signals from multiple line scans or lines-of-spots are deconvoluted and calibrated to generate elemental maps which provide detailed information on spatial variations of gold and other elements within and between grains.

"Ground vibration is the natural result of the blasting process. Many empirical formulae and methodologies including analysis of travel path effects have been developed. The scaled distance, which is the most popular approach for the calculation of the attenuation of particle velocity in the ground, has led to significant advances in the prediction of particle velocity when both explosive charge and distance vary. However, this approach does not consider the effect of ground anisotropy and existence of structural geological features on ground vibration. Therefore, in this study, the effects of these rock mass properties on types, amplitudes, and frequencies of ground vibration waves at four surface mines are examined. The results, which were implemented at Kangal coal mine, Bastas quarry and Kíbrís quarry, provided guidance for the extensive study at Orhaneli surface coal mine.As a result of the study, the authors came to the conclusion that vibration amplitudes change depending on the ground on which sensors were deployed and the conditions depending on whether measurements were done near major structural geological features. It was determined that the vibration amplitudes, measured at equal distances from the source but in different directions, change because of the propagation velocity anisotropy. Besides the change of wave type due to the kind of ground at the measurement location, it was determined that vibration anomolies were due to structural features."

In the present paper, the performance of four approaches based on neural networks and geostatistical method for grade estimation are compared and analyzed their performance to find a proper method. Four methods, Multi Layer Perceptron neural network (MLP), Radial Basis Function (RBF), General Regression Neural Network (GRNN) and Ordinary Kriging (OK) are selected for ore grade estimation of variable Fe in an iron deposit located in Iran. For each method, two diagnostic statistics are calculated: Mean square error (MSE) and correlation coefficient. The results show the superiority of the General Regression Neural Network.

A critical safety component for all underground mining is intrinsic and standing support systems. Specifically, tabular hardrock mining exploits a wide variety of deposits that require various methodologies to safely mine the ore material. Several new support systems have been developed in recent years for hard rock applications which have been modified or applied in a variety of ground control applications. These include prestressing devices, improved cribs, and free standing supports. Various standing support and prop-type systems have been designed for hard rock applications with seismic loading conditions to accept prestressing. The prestressing, using water-filled cells, creates an active load upon installation and is considered essential to maintain support during and after the blasting of the mine faces. Heavy seismic activity is also present in these mines and the prestressing units can provide some energy absorption capability to help preserve the integrity of the support. This paper presents an overview of these innovations in support technology.

"Base metals and precious metals can be recovered from a nickel matte or nickel concentrate using the Outotec nickel chloride leaching process. The raw material is leached with hydrochloric acid and the metals are recovered by solvent extraction, where ammonia is used to control the pH. Ammonium chloride is regenerated to ammonia and the side product of this step is calcium chloride solution. The regeneration utilizes either calcium oxide or calcium hydroxide. The calcium chloride solution is used to convert sulfuric acid into a hydrochloric acid solution while producing pure gypsum as a side product. The regeneration and reuse of ammonia and hydrochloric acid in this process will have a positive impact, from the point of view of both operating costs and environmental sustainability. This paper concentrates on the test work and technical concept development performed by Outotec to implement and develop chemical regeneration and recycling into a vital part of the nickel chloride leaching process.INTRODUCTION According to a nickel market analysis, the nickel market is expected to grow in the future. Main driver for this growth is the increase in stainless steel consumption as the living standards are equalizing globally. The expected increase in the amount of electrical cars and the need for nickel in the batteries of electrical cars also gives potential for the increased need for nickel in near future. At the moment the use of nickel in nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) and nickel-cobalt-aluminium (NCA) Li-ion batteries is in the range of 14 ktpa. It is estimated to increase to the level of 90 ktpa by 2025. In every era of the nickel industry, Outotec has been constantly developing new processes to create environmentally sustainable and economically viable processing routes. The Outotec® Nickel Matte Chloride Leaching process is a great example of a process that is flexible regarding raw material and could also treat nickel raw materials that are difficult for smelters. Outotec’s main options for pyrometallurgical nickel treatment include the Outotec® Direct Nickel Flash Smelting process (DON) and the Outotec® Ausmelt TSL process. The DON process is operated in Boliden Harjavalta Nickel Smelter in Finland. Ausmelt process is in use for example in Daye nonferrous plant in China. In the Outotec® Direct Nickel Flash Smelting Process, a sulphide nickel concentrate is processed in an Outotec Flash Smelting Furnace (FSF). Producing concentrates and processing them by Outotec Direct Nickel Flash Smelting to matte followed by hydrometallurgical refining offers a reliable route from concentrate to product. In the DON process, high-grade matte with low Fe content is produced in the FSF and the valuable metals in the slag are recovered in an electric furnace (EF). The Outotec® Ausmelt TSL process can use a large variety of raw materials (concentrates, secondary material and scrap metal) as feed. Fuel and oxygen are injected into the furnace through TSL (Top Submerged Lance) and this enables efficient smelting. Both Flash Smelting and TSL plants produce nickel mattes, which can be refined with Outotec hydrometallurgical processes."
