The Central Manitoba mining district, as spoken of in Manitoba, refers to that portion of the country lying between lake Winnipeg on the west and the Ontario boundary on the east, and from a few miles north of the Wanipigow (or Hole) river on the north, to a few miles south of the Bird river. It embraces two known mineralized belts; the gold area in the north, extending from the shores of lake Winnipeg almost to the Ontario boundary (in a slightly southeasterly direction) a zone some eight or ten miles wide and perhaps forty miles long, lying (for the most part) north, and parallel to, the Manigotagan river; and the Bird river copper and coppernickel deposits, an area not yet clearly defined, but in general lying immediately north of, and roughly parallel to, the Bird river. To the south of the Bird river is a somewhat differently mineralized area, numerous pegmatite dykes being found, with minerals typically associated with such rocks. More specifically, the known gold deposits are largely segregated in the above belt; (1) around English brook; (2) along the north shore of Wanipigow lake; the Rice lake area (about midway of the belt); and the Long Lake-Bulldog lake area, at the eastern end of the belt. Not all the known gold occurences are found in these segregations, but the density of claim staking in these areas is perhaps an indication of the greater number of prospects found in them to date.

"Brogan coal containing mean averages of 6,93% w/w total sulphur (1.1% sulphate sulphur, 1.6% organic sulphur and 4.24% pyritic sulphur) and 16.34% mineral ash was used as the test coal in these studies.Shake-culture leaching studies on seven size fractions of the coal, ranging in size from 0.045 mm to 1.7 mm, showed that the rate of pyrite leaching was inversely proportional to the particle size. As the use of continuous stirred tank reactors would be uneconomical for the reclamation of waste coal, column leaching studies were initiated on coal sieved to >6.35 mm to < 12.7 mm, The leachate was monitored for all metal ions and the release of iron was used to monitor the rate of pyrite oxidation . Measurable amounts of Zn, Co, Ni, Mn, and V, all of which can replace iron in the pyrite crystal structure, were released during the initial stages of leaching. Further, high concentrations of AI, Ca and Sr and trace amounts of Sn, As. Se, B, Ca, Cr, Si, and Ti were detected in the column effluents.These studies suggest that bacterial leaching will remove the pyrite and qualitative amounts of environmentally undesirable trace metals from the coal if such a process is developed for waste coal reclamation.IntroductionIn 1947, Colmer and Hinkle showed that acid mine drainage was the result of an oxidative attack of the iron-mineral sulphides by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans to produce sulphuric acid . Ashmead (1955) proposed the use of these organisms to desulphurize coal , but the subsequent research effort was concentrated on the metabolism and physiology of these extreme acidophiles.A limited number of studies have been reported on the bacterial leaching of pyrite from coal (Silverman et al., 1963; Dugan, 1977). However, the bacterial oxidation of pyrite is a self-limiting first-order reaction, probably due to the precipitation of Fe(OH)J and elemental sulphur , which progressively inhibits intimate contact between the bacterial cells and the sulphide-mineral surface. Consequently, the best pyrite oxidation experiments with coal reported to date required five days to remove 97070 of the pyrite (Dugan &Apel , 1978) using mixed cultures of T. ferrooxidans and T. thiooxidans."

On-site evaluation of strength using hardness is common for different materials. The lack of such relation for aluminum alloys has always been felt. In this work, a finite element analysis of plastic deformation and its distribution in Brinell hardness testing is presented. The analysis has been performed for different strength levels of aluminum alloys. By utilizing the Von Mises equivalent strain in hardness, it is tried to derive a correlation between hardness and strength values for the alloys under consideration. The derived correlation is verified using the experimental values available in literature.

For many years the value of qualitative microscopic investigation has been recognized in both of the fields of pure and applied science. In particular, its aid has been invoked in the determination of rock specimens in thin section, and some at least of the interrelations of minerals present in any one section have been observed and, to a limited extent, applied for the solution of different problems. During the past decade this form of research has also been diverted to the determination of ore minerals in polished section, with some observation of their structural relations. Microscopic research of a quantitative character, on the other hand, while started nearly one hundred years ago, has found but a limited application in petrography and has scarcely been used at all in the more modern science of mineragraphy. This is very largely due to the methods employed, since most of them consumed too much time and were, in addition, too laborious to encourage many workers in their use. The details of procedure for these earlier methods will be found in another paper by the writer, and will be omitted from this discussion as being of small interest to practical mining men.

A method based on use of calorimetric data for the determination of solidification kinetic parameters is proposed. The method incorporates recent theories of nucleation and growth and allows modeling heat fluxes observed in calorimetric experiment. Statistically optimal estimations of the kinetic parameters, which include the activation&apos;s energies of nucleation and growth, are derived from experimental data by means of nonlinear regression analysis. The method is applicable to pure substances and alloys. The evaluation of the kinetic parameters characterizing solidification of pure Al is used for clarifying and exemplifying the method.

De nos jours, Jes restrictions en matière de protection de l'environnement obligent Jes opérateurs miniers a trouver Jes solutions Jes plus efficaces pour préserver Jes sites environnants de la pollution due a l'oxydation des sulfures. Cette oxydation cause une acidification accrue du milieu et une mise en solution des metaux toxiques. L'utilisation des recouvrements multicouches est l'une des solutions Jes plus efficaces pour limiter la pollution liée au DMA mais entraine des coilts de construction qui sont souvent considérés par l'industrie miniere comme prohibitifs. Une façon de rendre cette technologie applicable, d'un point de vue économique, est de désulfurer Jes résidus à l'usine de traitement et d'utiliser la fraction inerte comme composante d'un recouvrernent multicouche. Cette opération de desulfuration peut etre réalisée par flottation non sélective des résidus dans le but d'obtenir d'une part un faible volume de concentré de sulfures qui devra être géré convenablement et d'autre part un rejet non générateur d'acide.

"AbstractOver the past five years, tax rates in the Canadian mining industry have skyrocketed upward across Canada, as both federal and provincial governments have sought to increase their share of mining revenues.However, the past few years have not only brought high tax rates to the industry, but also a number of important new federal and provincial tax incentives.In large part, these incentives ~ special credits or reduction in tax for carrying out specific exploration, processing or other activities - have helped to moderate the adverse effects of the higher tax rates and have provided inducements for exploration and processing activities which might not otherwise have been undertaken.However, the effectiveness of certain of these incentives can be questioned: our over-all tax structure now consists in large part of punitively high marginal rates with some extraordinarily generous but capricious tax reductions for specific activities and may not be in the best long-term interest of either the industry or the nation.A rational tax structure, with moderate and stable tax rates, together with reasonable incentives confined to activities specifically requiring them, could be a more effective spur to investment than the present tax and incentive jungleIntroductionIN THE YEARS since federal tax reform, the mining industry in Canada has faced a continued escalation in its tax burdens as federal and provincial governments have leapfrogged each other in imposing new and higher taxes on the industry. "The present study investigated the texture transition during secondary recrystallization in the AA5182 sheet. During the initial stage of annealing, the texture showed a weak Cube orientation as the primary recrystallization texture. During the secondary recrystallization with abnormal grain growth, the area ratio of the {hkl} <011> orientations increased by consuming the other orientations. The texture transition was calculated by the 2-D Monte Carlo simulation with the misorientation dependency. When the higher grain boundary mobility was set in the specific range of the high angle misorientation, the orientation preferential growth of the RW {100} <011> orientation was reproduced. However, other {hkl} <110> orientations could not be well reproduced by the misorientation dependency.INTRODUCTION Crystal orientation and texture are important factors for aluminum sheet products from the standpoint of mechanical property, formability and isotropy. The recrystallization texture results from the orientation preferential growth from the rolling deformation microstructure and the texture (Alvi, Cheong, Suni, Weiland, & Rollett, 2008). Texture development has been a topic of intense research for decades with advances in analysis methods, e.g., orientation mapping (OIM) and computer simulations (Fjeldberg & Marthinsen, 2010; Ivasishin, Shevchenko, Vasiliev, & Semiatin, 2006). The grain boundary characteristic is considered to be a key for the orientation preferential growth. In the case of the recrystallization from the deformed microstructure, not only the grain boundary characteristic, but also the dislocation density and the subgrain size affect the nucleation and the grain growth (Engler, Löchte, & Hirsch, 2007). On the other hand, in the case of secondary recrystallization, the dislocation density and the subgrain size can be ignored and the effect of the grain boundary characteristic can play a significant role in the grain growth. There is intense research about the texture development during secondary recrystallization in aluminum alloys and it was reported that coarse {hkl} <011> grains were formed during the secondary recrystallization (Suk, Shin, & Huh, 2006; Rios, & Gottstein, 2001). However, the mechanism of forming the {hkl} <011> grains has not been fully clarified. In the present study, the effect of the grain boundary characteristic on the orientation preferential growth was investigated by EBSD analysis and Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation."

The surface of -30µm silica suspension (2% v/v) treated with 100 ppm Mg2+ at pH 11 was fully coated with Mg(OH)2. Under this condition, the silica is strongly positively charged (+30 mV) and the suspension is dispersed. Subsequent addition of Ca2+ promoted aggregation and reduced the surface charge. At this pH calcium is present as Ca2+ and CaOH+, i.e., positively charged ions interacted with the positive surface. Aggregation by a chemical bridging mechanism is proposed. The observation may be relevant to the widespread practice in mineral processing of adding lime to promote aggregation and settling in concentrate thickeners.

"The Part of the Eastern Townships dealt with in this paper is shown in the accompanying figure. Each rectangle represents one of the topographic maps published by the Department of National Defence on a scale of one mile to one inch. Each sheet covers an area approximately 24 miles long and 17 miles wide, or slightly more than 400 square miles. The north-western part of the area figured, comprising the Upton, Aston, Becancour, and the two unnamed sheets, (Three Rivers and Yamaska), together with most of the Lyster, Drummondville, and St. Hyacinthe sheets, is largely covered by clays and sands deposited in interglacial and post-glacial time in the Champlain estuary, so that outcrops are widely scattered and in-formation is correspondingly sketchy. In the remainder of the area figured, comprising more than 4,000 square miles, outcrops are reasonably numerous and have been mapped on a scale of one mile to one inch, and the structure is moderately well understood.The Eastern Townships was an area of intense orogenic disturbance, apparently beginning late in the Cambrian or early in the Ordovician, and continuing till well on in the Devonian period. During this long period, which may have lasted for a hundred million years or more, the area was subjected from time to time to intense thrusts from the east and southeast. Each of these caused folding of the rocks, accompanied by faulting, raised parts of the area above sea-level, and presumably created ranges of mountains. Long periods of erosion cut away the mountains and reduced the area nearly to sea-level after which subsidence carried it below sea-level, and permitted further sediments to accumulate before the next thrust initiated the next cycle.The first of these movements, as stated, appears to have been in late Cambrian or early Ordovician time. The group of rocks known as Caldwell was folded and, south and east of the town of Asbestos, was thrown into great drag-folds before deposition of the next overlying series, termed the Beauceville, began. Unfortunately, the date of this orogeny is very imperfectly known, because both series of rocks have been so crushed and sheared that almost all fossil remains have been destroyed. Graptolites, found in one place in slates generally considered Beauceville, give that series a tentative Middle Ordovician age. In the Caldwell rocks, which underlie the Beauceville with great unconformity, no fossils whatever have yet been found. Thus, if the Beauceville rocks are correctly dated as mid-Ordovician, the best that can be said of the movement folding the Caldwell is that it took place at some time before Middle Ordovician."

"Gravitational force is an external body force acting on underground structures. It should be noted that gravitational force cannot be replaced with the surface traction vector (Cauchy stress) which is an internal force. This fact should be properly taken into account in a numerical analysis of underground structures, particularly for structures such as vertical shafts, tunnels, and caverns constructed at great depths. It is obvious that the gravitational force must be conserved at all times.In conventional numerical analyses, the initial state of stress of the ground medium is firstly calculated under the gravitational field. This means that the gravitational force is replaced with stress (surface traction vector), and after that only the initial stress is considered in the calculation of the stresses and displacements of the structure. It should be noted that the initial stress is Cauchy stress consisting of a surface traction vector, while the gravitational force is a body force acting on the mass of the materials. This computational approach may be acceptable for elastic problems because the principle of superposition is valid for elastic materials. However, this approach becomes questionable for elasto-plastic materials because there is no guarantee that the principle of superposition is valid for them.Furthermore, another problem exists in elasto-plastic analyses: The stress state in a plastic zone must satisfy a yielding criterion such as that of Mohr-Coulomb. In order to make the stress state satisfy the criterion, an excess stress beyond the yielding criterion should be transferred to an elastic zone existing outside of the plastic zone. This seems to always be possible, because an elastic zone always exists, no matter how large of a plastic zone appears. In some cases, however, the excess stress cannot be transferred to the elastic zone because the gravitational force must be conserved. Therefore, it is obvious that the magnitude of stress around underground structures may become large and surpass the yielding criterion at great depths where a large gravitational force exists.In this paper, it is demonstrated that in a conventional elasto-plastic numerical analysis of a vertical shaft at a great depth, all the stress components around the shaft become very small, even though a large gravitational force exists. This strange result may be due to the fact that the gravitational force is not properly taken into consideration in the numerical analysis."

This paper describes a rock drill bit which, although conventional in the processes of manufacture and use on the job, has incorporated into the outer wall or periphery of the insert, where wear is always the greatest, a variable amount of extra metal, distributed in units of height of insert to withstand this excessive wear. Explained are variations of construction, how the extra metal enables the bit to drill more footage, prevent antitaper and the need to gauge grind, increase penetration rate and the length of run per regrind, reduce shank breakage and ma-chine costs, and permit increased production per man-shift, without requiring any change in equipment already on the job. HydraboltTM is a Swellex-type dowel support element developed and manufactured by New Concept Mining in South Africa. Like Swellex, the HydraboltTM is a folded tube which can be inserted into a larger diameter hole without pushing. It is then activated by injection of high pressure water which inflates the folded tube to intimate contact with the walls of the borehole at a set pressure, normally 25 MPa. Unlike Swellex however, the set water pressure at the end of the inflation is maintained throughout the life of the dowel. An integral non-return valve makes this possible. The HydraboltTM is being investigated as a possible stress change measuring cell. This paper presents the results of closed form solutions, numerical modeling and laboratory test to date. Preliminary results indicate that the HydraboltTM can be used as a stress change monitoring cell in addition to its conventional role as a rock mass reinforcing element. If successful, the HydraboltTM will supplement microseismic monitoring systems in rockburst-prone ground conditions where they will give quantitative stress change data for both mine design model calibrations and means for proactive safety measures.

"This paper presents and compares the physical properties of Gelfill and cemented hydraulic fill (CHF) obtained by lab experiments. Gelfill consists of tailings, different binders such as Portland cement, fly ash and blast furnace slag and an alkali activator such as sodium silicate. The CHF and Gelfill samples with various mixture designs were cast and cured for 28 days. The influence of sodium silicate concentration, pulp density and mixing time on the mechanical properties of samples were evaluated using the uniaxial strength test. Mercury intrusion porosimetery (MIP) was used to analyse the microstructure of CHF and Gelfill samples.This study concludes that: (i) The mechanical properties of CHF can be improved by the addition of appropriate amount of sodium silicate. (ii) The rate of strength acquisition in Gelfill samples is faster than CHF samples over 28 days of curing period. (iii) Mixing time strongly influences the mechanical properties of Gelfill samples but did not have any effect on CHF samples. (iv) The MIP analyses indicate that the pore size distribution and total porosity of Gelfill and CHF were different, and this did contribute to higher strength development of the Gelfill samples. INTRODUCTIONThe increased depths of mines in the Canadian Shield and the high stress associated with these depths favour a new method of mine backfill that can both meet strength requirements and help mine productivity. The mine backfill mainly consists of tailings, water and binder materials, the latter being most expensive. Gelfill is a new mine backfill material whose binder usually consists of alkali activators such as sodium silicate and other cementitious materials such as blast furnace slag and normal Portland cement. Although sodium silicate has been used in concrete manufacture, the use of this material in mine backfill is relatively new (Doucet, 2007, Razavi, 2007). Until very recently there have been only a few isolated publications, mostly out of McGill University, regarding mine Gelfill (Razavi, 2007 and Kermani et al., 2009 and 2010). These papers have investigated some of the basic mechanical properties and mechanical behaviour of Gelfill. However, the physical performance of Gelfill in various conditions has yet to be understood. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to investigate the influence of mixing time and sodium silicate concentration on the mechanical performance of Gelfill and CHF through a series of experiments. Moreover, the microstructure of the Gelfill and CHF samples was studied."

MR. T. L. McCALL: Planning ahead in coal-mining is essential, but the question may be raised, just how far ahead can we plan. You can overdo it: chat is, you can get in a rut. Never let planning get a hold on you to chat extent. You must be prepared to deal intelligently with any new conditions that arise, and to apply new discoveries. It may become necessary to abandon ? .your plan, make the best you can of the ground you have developed, and start again, with a new plan. So far as the submarine workings of the Dominion Steel and Coal Company are concerned, we cannot know definitely what lies ahead of us under the sea: we must ?base our tentative plans on assumptions, and, as we meet changing conditions, we must change our plans. In the case of inland mines it is possible to bore in advance, and consequently it is generally possible to set out your plans in advance, block out a section of the mine, and develop to obtain a uniform product for a whole year, or perhaps even longer. MR. J. B. MORROW: While planning in coal mining, we must bear in mind chat the consumer also is planning ahead. Some people will tell you that, in ten years time, the demand is going to be all for pulverized co al; others believe that the field for such fuel is limited. Needless to state, planning for a pulverized-coal market is quite a different matter to planning for a general grade, ore stoker, market. In planning, therefore, our endeavour must be to keep a jump ahead of the work being undertaken by the anthracite producers. This year, they are spending about two million dollars-money contributed, not by the Government, but by the industry itself-in the study and promotion of new and improved ways of burning anthracite. For example, they are perfecting small hot-water heaters, and one they have brought out weighs only about ten pounds. I feel that research of this type must be regarded as an essential part of planning in coal mining. We, in the soft-coal industry, are also planning types of more efficient burning equipment and doing other investigational work.

Risk financing solutions are emerging to fully address environmental liabilities for mining operations. Supported by specialized insurance and alternative risk transfer (ART) products, mine owners can fund, cap and guarantee the environmental liabilities and closure obligations of a mine within a financial structure that will be acceptable to regulators. An environmental risk financing program will permit an owner to transfer the liabilities and indeed the ownership of a site to a third party that has the ability and resources to responsibly execute the closure plan. A properly structured program will be financially viable for the owner and will also respond to community and environmental opposition concerns about sustainable development and the environmental legacies associated with mining activities.

At the Gol-E-Gohar mining and industrial Company, a pelletizing plant, which includes two parallel dry closed grinding circuits and a pellet production circuit, produces 600 t/h. Each grinding circuit consists of a burner, a dry ball mill (6 m×13 m) and an air separator. Each ball mill consists of a 2 m-long dryer chamber and an 11 m-long grinding chamber. Iron ore concentrate is fed to the drying chamber to decrease its moisture from 2.5% to below 0.2%. The drying chamber consists of 56 flights in two rows. It was found when the feed moisture content decreased from 1.3 to 3.5%, the throughput decreased by 14% (40 t/h) indicating a low performance of the dryer. In order to improve the efficiency of the drying section, a scale down version of the dryer was constructed in a 1m diameter mill with a transparent end to make image analysis possible. It was found that because of the inappropriate veiling profile in the drying section, most of materials are not subjected to the hot gas tunnel. To overcome this problem, various flights with different geometries were physically tested and also simulated by the KMPCDEM © software. With the aim of arriving at a proper veiling profile which maximizes the particles contact with hot air, a new flight design was obtained and tested. The installation of the rectangular tooth type flights in one of the mills in the plant made the comparison of the old and new designs possible. The evaluation of the designs in a period of three months indicated 15 t/h increase in the throughput in the case of the new flight design.

Peak laboratory strength data obtained from low permeability clay shales/rocks often display a bilinear or non-linear failure envelope. In many of these tests pore pressures are not measured because of issues associated with back-saturation prior to confined compressive loading. In such tests the effective state of stress at failure remains unknown and provides room for speculation. The non-linear shape of the failure envelope may have several reasons including the influence of capillary forces or the tendency of a saturated clay shale to dilate as the confining stress is changed. The former stems from sample preservation, preparation or core unloading effects and represents a partly saturated state (i.e., not representative for the in-situ state); the latter represents the response of a saturated material. This contribution discusses these issues based on a data set obtained from Opalinus Clay specimens, and concludes that without a careful back-saturation processes knowledge of the underpinning reasons for the non-linear failure envelope cannot be obtained.

Recovery of vanadium from LD (Linz-Donawits) converter slag was evaluated by means of microbial leaching. Vanadium leaching was performed in two stages. In the first stage, the bacteria were grown in a culture medium and in the second stage; vanadium containing slag was added to the metabolites produced by bacteria. Bioleaching was performed using heterotrophic bacteria Pseudomonas Putída. Control tests without bacteria inoculation were also performed and the results were compared with bioleaching outcomes. Optimal conditions for the bioleaching of vanadium containing slag were determined.
