The HNIA field is part of the Tinrhert project which consists of developing 17 fields containing essentially gas with a few small rings of oil. It is considered as one of the main fields in this project in terms of its area and the number of geological structures that has formed it. It is a wide anticline of Cambro-Ordovician age, orientated NNE-SSW and located in the South-eastern part of Illizi basin. This structure extends from Alrar-center in the North, to the North of In Amenas in the South. The area is 1350 km2. The main reservoirs forming HNIA field are the Devonian (F2, F3 and F4), Siluro-Devonian (F6) and Cambro-Ordovician. These latest are formed by 4 sandy units alternated by layers of shale and shaly silt termed from the base to the top as follow: Unit II, Unit III-3U, Unit IV-2L and Unit IV3; these units are the subject of this study. The HNIA field is essentially gas, up to day this field is at the stage of appraisal and evaluation in order to establish a development plan; therefore the main target of this study is to contribute to this frame work. The current paper is focused on evaluating the behavior of copper in a copper production slag and the assessment of metal recovery possibilities. For this reason, thermodynamic calculations were carried out to determine the influence of parameters such as slag composition, temperature and oxygen partial pressure on recovery of non-ferrous elements. It was found that the formation of a solid face centered cubic (fcc) phase, mainly consisting of iron, limits the extent of reduction that can be achieved for an industrial process. However, it could be discovered that solubility of iron in the Cu-rich liquid alloy strongly depends on presence of other elements, particularly arsenic. As part of the results of this study, the solubility of Cu in the slag at onset of fcc phase formation is presented as function of temperature, oxygen partial pressure and concentration of MgO and CaO. It was concluded that lower temperature (1200°C) and higher CaO addition (16 mass-% in this study), would result in the highest achievable copper recovery from slag. INTRODUCTION Copper slag is produced as a by-product of the copper production process. The slag is still containing a high amount of copper and other valuable metals. This demands further treatment of the slag as a secondary source of metals. In addition, the physical/mechanical properties of slag allow its use in several applications such as hydraulic engineering, civil engineering, as an abrasive and many more. These applications help reducing the use of natural resources like rock and sand. By decreasing the content of heavy metals such as Cu, Pb, Zn and As in the slag, its application in abovementioned fields becomes more attractive as the probability of releasing these elements to the environment is further reduced. To develop a pyrometallurgical slag reduction process, it is necessary to understand what describes the end point of the reduction. This point is expected at maximum copper recovery without facing operational challenges. Existing literature provide some information on the effect of different parameters such as temperature or concentration of different slag formers, on solubility of copper and heavy metals in different phases. However, due to complexity of industrial slags, equilibrium experiments and accurate thermodynamic modelling are essential to be able to reliably predict the behavior of different elements in the system and determine the end-point of reduction.

Introduction In the Early part of 1930 the Ontario Research Foundation was asked by the Minister of Mines, the Hon. Charles McCrea, K.C., M.P.P., to undertake a technical and economic investigation of the Northern Ontario lignite deposit. This investigation has been under way since June, 1930, and has necessitated considerable work at the deposit, in the laboratories of the Foundation, and at test plants in Europe. All the work has been carried out in active co-operation with the Provincial Department of Mines, the Deputy Minister, Mr. T. F. Sutherland, and several of his technical colleagues being associated with members of the staff of the Foundation on the Advisory Committee, which has met at frequent intervals to co-ordinate and direct the various lines of research. An interim report was made to the Minister of Mines by the Director of the Foundation, Dr. H. B. Speakman, at the end of December, 1932, and is at present under consideration by the Minister. This report deals with the extent and character of the deposit, the methods and costs of mining, and the methods and costs of processing raw lignite, the characteristics of certain lignite products, and the technology and economics of present fuel utilization by railways, industry, and domestic users in northern Ontario. It is not the purpose of the author to discuss in this paper either the geology of the deposit or the economics of the mining, processing, and utilization of lignite, but rather to deal briefly with some of the technical problems investigated by the Foundation during the study of the characteristics and methods of utilization of Northern Ontario lignite. Some mention, however, of the work carried out to define the extent of the deposit is a prerequisite to any discussion of the nature of the lignite.

"The Phoenix Camp, in the Boundary Creek district of southern British Columbia, produced before 1920 about 15 million tons of ore averaging more than l ·5 per cent copper, about 0.03 ounces per ton in gold, and 0·5 ounces per ton in silver. Attwood Copper Mines Ltd. conducted an exploration program in the Phoenix area from 1951to1953.Publications on the camp are listed in the bibliography. "The uranium deposits upon which the Rabbit Lake project story is based are located at the eastern margin of the Athabasca Basin just west of Wollaston Lake in northern Saskatchewan. This paper provides a general review of the exploration history for the major deposits and the influence of an expanding geological data base, which served to guide the continuing exploration programs.A brief description of each of the deposits is provided in order of their discovery and with emphasis upon their relative geological and mineralogical characteristics.The Rabbit Lake and Eagle Point orebodies are monometallic uranium deposits localized by thrust faults within the Aphebian Wollaston Group. The Cof/ins Bay A-zone, B-zone, and D-zone are polymetaflic U, Ni, As, Co (Au , Ag) deposits located within the Helikian Athabasca Group at its unconformable contact with the underlying Wollaston Group. INTRODUCTIONThis paper demonstrates the importance of applying the accumulated geological knowledge, gained through the exploration, mining, and development process, to the ongoing success of exploration programs. To emphasize this point, the basic geology of each of the major Rabbit Lake area deposits will be presented in chronological order of their discovery and subsequent development. These depos its include Rabbit Lake, Collins Bay A-zone, B-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point. The geological descriptions are based primarily upon the detailed observations of many current and former geologist s employed by both Gulf Minerals Canada Limited and Eldorado Resources Limited. Much of the early historical data was obtained from Dr. E.E.N. Smith, formerly with Eldorado Resources Limited. Regional GeologyThe Rabbit Lake area which includes the Rabbit Lake, Collins Bay A-zone, B-zone, D-zone and Eagle Point deposit s, is located on the eastern edge of the Athabasca Basin close to the western shores of Wollaston Lake (Fig. I). The area is in the Churchill Province of the Canadian Shield within the Wollaston lithostructural domain, at the eastern edge of the Athabasca Group. The uranium deposits occur within both the Wollaston Group metasedimentary assemblage of probable early Aphebian age, and the diagenetic ally altered quartz sandstones and conglomerates of the Athabasca Group of Paleohelikian age. Both units unconformably overlie granitoid gneisses interlayered with metasediments and a graphitic iron formation all believed to be of Archean age. All uranium depo sits in the Rabbit Lake area occur in close proximity to the Paleohelikian - Aphebian or Paleohelikian - Archean unconformity."

Over the past 30 years, underground paste backfill systems have been implemented across the globe in many configurations, each with a primary focus of providing high quality backfill to enhance mine operations. However, a number of key design drivers are not always well understood within design engineering firms that occasionally undertake this work, leaving opportunities on the table. Perhaps not always obvious to those newly embracing paste technology, identifying key drivers and opportunities attainable through a paste backfill system is generally not straightforward, requiring innovative approaches to securing higher productivity, availability, performance, maintainability, and operator health and safety. This paper describes a number of applications and audits of paste backfill systems for several challenging mine operations. Key challenges include iterative design aspects of availability of good backfill materials, plant location and configuration, general arrangement, and binder receiving/storage systems.

Deformation in a material at any temperature is known to consist of two major components - a reversible (elastic) part and an irreversible part (often called plastic). What is not universally known is the fact that at high temperatures greater than about 0.4Tm, where Tm, is the melting point in Kelvin, the reversible part includes not only elastic but also a delayed elastic (recoverable but time dependent) component. A very simple computational model is presented here for a constant-strain stress relaxation test (SRT) on the basis of a three-component constant-stress rheological equation derived from strain relaxation and recovery test (SRRT) data. It is shown that the rapid stress reduction during the early periods of relaxation when the stresses are high is governed primarily by delayed elasticity irrespective of the imposed strain level. This is in contradiction to the popular concept prevailing today. The asymptotic approach to a quasi-stable stress rate at longer times and lower stresses is, however, controlled by viscous flow (power-law creep). The validity of the theory is examined by comparing the predictions with experimental results obtained for a titanium-base alloy Ti-6246 at 0.45Tm.

"Highvale Mine, located at Wabamun, Alberta, produces thermal coal for TransAIta's Keephills and Sundance generating plants. Overburden stripping in the mine is conducted by draglines which normally operate on top of the overburden bench. In certain areas oj the mine, however, these overburden benches are susceptible to slope failure. In these areas, due to safety considerations, the draglines are utilized in the less productive chop-cutting mode, supplemented by mobile equipment where the bench height exceeds the dragline chop-cutting limit. This paper proposes maintaining the draglines in their normal digging mode through areas of unstable or jailed overburden, by utilizing a dragline carried toe buttress 10 ensure adequate bench stability. The data requirements and methods of slope analysis to design a toe buttress across an unstable highwall area are examined in rigorous detail. INTRODUCTIONLocationHighvale Mine is owned by TransAlta Utilities Corporation and operated under contract. It is Canada's largest coal mine with an annual coal production in excess of II million tonnes. The mine is located approximately 80 km west of Edmonton on the south shore of Wabamum Lake (Fig. I) and production is currently provided by three pits 02. 03 and 04 (Fig. 2). The entire coal production is consumed at the nearby Sundance and Keephills power generating plants.ScopeThe mining operation at Highvale Mine has had occasional slope stability failures of its high wall overburden bench. This paper examines one such failure which occurred in the summer of 1983 at Pit 03. In addition to an investigation of the failure, Terracon was asked to recommend mine operation procedures which would minimize the impact of these slide zones on dragline productivity. A method of removing the failed material by utilizing the dragline in its normal digging mode is designed. The method's advantages and disadvantages as well as the required support procedures are reviewed."

Background ?Nickel Rim South Mine started production ramp-up in Q2, 2009. ?The main dewatering pumps were put into use in August 2009. ?3 Feluwa?multisafe?positive displacement pumps ?1700m single lift pumping ?Reliability has been an issue due to the amount of slimes and fibers (from shotcrete) at the pumps. ?Critiqued internal dewatering system to solve some issues we were having with our sumps Findings 1.Much of the final dewatering system was not in place. a)Temporary pain. Difficult to say something is not working when the system was not yet in place as per design. b)Not enough capacity to handle slimes within the system. 2.Need to address issues with the final design: a)Ongoing costs: The end design has operating costs of $2.5 million b)Scoops in Sumps: The end design relies on scoops to be used for cleaning the sumps c)Slimes Recovery: The system mixes 3 different products in the sumps along with the fibers d)Pump repair costs: The existing Tsurumi pumps are too light duty for our slimes

"A simulation study of the fill factor of a drum mill was conducted using two types of grinding media: balls and tetraballpebs. Each medium was composed of equal number of grinding bodies having equal weight but different shape. The difference was in the density of the two grinding media.Standard spherical grinding bodies (balls), which were used in practice, and equivalent (by weight) grinding bodies in the shape of spheroidal tetrahedrons (tetraballpebs) were studied. The simulation was conducted in a module of a 1.2 m diameter drum mill, whose length exceeded twice the diameter of the corresponding grinding body. The grinding balls had a few percent (3 to 6) higher fill factor than the grinding tetraballpebs in the same shell.Vertical sections of the grinding medium were taken across the studied shell module along its axis. They showed the location of each grinding body in the fill volume. Defects in the packing of the grinding bodies and the contacts between them and with the inner surface of the shell were also show. Differences in the contact points of the balls and the tetraballpebs were noted. For the tetraballpebs, we observed contacts both between the spherical surfaces and with the edges and vertices of the grinding bodies.The topography of the grinding media is shown visually.INTRODUCTIONThe grinding balls have been studied extensively. It is the traditional grinding medium in ore processing industry. The parameter characterising the grinding medium is its density. It is the mass of the grinding medium per unit of volume. The parameter may have a range of values. It depends on:• The physical properties of the material they are made of;• The shape of the grinding body;• The dimensions of the body;• Size distribution of the grinding bodies in the grinding media.In comminution, the fill factor of the mill shell is the process parameter that is representative of the grinding medium. Some publications have indicated the disadvantages of ball grinding. For example, Wu, Xiang, Glen, and Duan (2008) note in the analysis of the mechanism of grinding that the balls are not the best grinding media and disadvantages include among others:• Easy over-grinding resulting from the point contact between the balls;• Attrition surface is the smallest in the grinding media;• Poor selective exposure of minerals resulting from the accidental and often significantly more powerful impact on the feed;• The grinding efficiency drops as the fineness of grind is increased;In the Handbook of mineral processing, Polkin (1950) noted that the shape of the grinding bodies determines the volume of the void spaces therein and therefore the shape affects the grinding efficiency per unit of volume of the grinding medium."

Data are presented on the extractant behaviour on toxic metal removal from spent hydroprocessing catalyst, produced at the North Atlantic Refinery plant in Newfoundland and Labrador. Aliquat 336 was selected due to its potential capabilities for the separation of cobalt, molybdenum and nickel from the leachate extractant produced by aqua regia. The solvent extraction process was statistically modeled using central composite design (CCD), and the numerical optimization was conducted to achieve the optimum point for toxic metal recovery for the extractant.

"Concerns about using microdiamonds for resource estimation have been raised by workers because multiple diamond populations exist in many parts of the mantle source region, small diamonds in kimberlite could be exposed to proportionately greater levels of resorption and modification, and euhedral microdiamonds could crystallize immediately prior to kimberlite eruption. This paper addresses these concerns; discusses the geology of the mantle, the principal diamond host rocks, and the impact of mantle processes; compares micro- and macrodiamond properties and features; and outlines steps to identify and mitigate the risk of diamond resorption and its impact on the diamond grade-size relationship.RÉSUMÉ Des travailleurs se sont interrogés sur l’utilisation de microdiamants pour estimer la ressource; en effet, de multiples populations de diamants existent dans plusieurs secteurs de la région source dans le manteau. Des petits diamants dans la kimberlite pourraient être exposés à des niveaux proportionnellement supérieurs de résorption et de modification; de plus, des diamants idiomorphes pourraient cristalliser immédiatement avant l’éruption de la kimberlite. "The main solution, ore and residue pulp streams in the Rio Algom Quirke I uranium mill at Elliot Lake have been sampled and analyzed for radium-226. Analysis of the ore and leached residues indicates that Ra-226 dissolves and precipitates within the first pachuca tank. A maximum of approximately 0.2% of the Ra-226 in the ore remains in solution during leaching.IntroductionConcern over the acid drainage and radionuclide dissolution problems associated with uranium tailings disposal sites in Canada has prompted investigation into methods for improving current uranium processing practice.Present commercial practice usually involves leaching of the uranium ore with sulphuric acid, ion-exchange separation of the uranyl sulphate complex from the leach liquor and"" precipitation of the uranium as yellowcake. Daughter products of U-238, such as Th-230, Pb-21O and Ra-226 remain with the tailings and undergo long-term dissolution.Table I summarizes the probable behaviour of the radionuclides during milling. The concern here is with Ra-226, because it will deposit in the bones if ingested and is ""thus considered a serious health hazard(1), Similarly, Po-218 and Bi-214, which are daughter products of Rn-222, can be retained in the lungs and are considered to be the principal sources of radiation dosage(2) arising from the inhalation of Rn-222. Previous investigations(3-9l indicate or imply that Ra-226 undergoes redistribution during milling. However, detailed published information on the behaviour of Ra-226 in the uranium milling process appears to be lacking. A knowledge of the behaviour of Ra-226 in uranium mills, particularly during leaching, could lead to improved methods for its control.This paper reports the occurrence of Ra-226 in the Rio Algom mill. The main objectives of the study were to determine (1) the distribution of Ra-226 within the solids, (2) at what point, and how rapidly, redistribution occurs and (3) whether there are high concentrations of Ra-226 in solution."

Trends in the mean and/or variance are a longstanding challenge in mineral resource modeling. Geologic modeling and/or grade domaining are often employed to account for heterogeneities in mineral grades; however, this is only practical up to a certain point since the number of data available for reliable model construction can be severely reduced. In such cases, trends remain present in certain geologic/grade domains and directly impact the modeling methodology; the trend must either be handled explicitly or a suitable approach is adopted to implicitly account for it. This is highly dependent on understanding the source of the trend. We propose an approach that detects the source of non-stationarity, which is based on quantifying the impact of non-stationarity in the mean and the variance via the semivariogram. By expanding the methodof- moments approximation of the semivariogram, we decompose the experimental semivariogram is into three terms: 1) trend in mean component, 2) trend in variance component and 3) stationary component. We can then assess the source of trend by calculating the contribution of each component at every lag. Two cases are presented to illustrate this tool. Firstly, a synthetic reference model is simulated and different trend patterns are added; the influence of these patterns in the experimental semivariogram calculation are analyzed and discussed. Secondly, a real dataset is considered where the impact due to the presence of trends in the mean and variance are assessed. The results of this paper reveal the semivariogram to be a tremendously powerful tool in determining the source of the trend. This insight may be useful in the selection of a suitable modeling approach for resource estimation.

"Draft income tax amendments aimed primarily at certain carve-out arrangements prevalent in the oil and gas industry could have devastating results for long standing royally arrangements in the mining industry . Whether or not this potentially damaging effect is intended is largely beside the points-the point is that the mining industry would be well advised to become familiar with the draft amendments and make sure that the potential damage to existing and future royalty agreements is minimized.The draft amendments fail to take into account the nature of mineral royalties and app ear to reflect a lack of understanding of the characteristics of the mining industry.IntroductionOn July 19, 1985 Finance Minister Michael Wilson released draft amendments to the Income Tax Act which are intended 10 effectively thwart the use of so called “carve-out arrangements"".Unfortunately, the proposed amendments are so broad and far- reaching that countless ""innocent"" royalty arrangements in the mining industry, and in the oil and gas industry, are threatened. The potential harshness of the new rules would be compounded by the retroactive application to the amendments to longstanding royalty and similar agreements."

Due to recent regulations limiting tolerated lead concentrations in copper alloys, new recycling strategies have to be considered. This study investigates the suitability of technical approaches in order to recycle leaded copper alloys exemplified by CuZn39Pb2 and produce an alloy in compliance with future lead regulations in the European Union. Three pyrometallurgical methods are considered to achieve this goal, namely vacuum distillation, intermetallic precipitation and fractional crystallisation. The impact of essential process parameters i.e. pressure, temperature, time, atmosphere and quantity of additives are identified using thermochemical and kinetic modelling. An experimental implementation reveals a general suitability of all three refining processes. However, the individual efficiency of the different methods strongly differs. Thus, a detailed assessment is carried out in order to provide an evaluation on the efficiencies of these methods from a technological, economical and environmental point of view. Taking a possible industrial realisation into account, the authors recommend the approach of vacuum distillation, although the energy demanded is comparatively high due to the enthalpy of evaporation for zinc, or rather, lead. However, required lead concentrations can be reached quickly without introducing an external element to the material. The prediction of selectivity and evaporation speed, which are immanent variables for a successful implementation, can be validated experimentally. INTRODUCTION In 2016 approximately 1 million tonnes of leaded copper alloy semi-finished goods with an average lead content of 2.1 Ma% have been produced in the European Union (EU). The global production in the same period exceeded 5.5 million tonnes, while the lead concentration has stayed constant at around 2.4 Ma% for the last 50 years. Up to 80 % of the current production volume is covered with end-of-life scraps, which are used for direct re-melting, depending on the alloy composition. Lead has been a popular alloying element in copper alloys in general, and in particular in brass due to its positive impact on various mechanical, physical and chemical properties, especially machinability. Health and environmental concerns were drivers for many governments to implement limitations on lead. In order to further utilise the resource potential of leaded copper scrap, it is inevitable to develop methods to efficiently eliminate lead from circulation as far as possible. "Abstract-The schist-, sediment-, and intrusion-hosted Tertiary Au-Ag hydrothermal deposits of the northern Black Hills, South Dakota are localized and controlled by various types of fractures. This study is an attempt to distinguish between and discuss the possible causes of these fractures in three mines: Richmond Hill, Annie Creek - Foley Ridge (ACFR), and Gilt Edge.Five models based on the structural and tectonic settings of the northern Black Hills are proposed for the fracture origin. In Richmond Hill mine, mineralized fractures within the schist-hosted deposits are in the form of veinlets and stockworks. Larger veins filling open spaces along schistosity planes are also present. Fractures in Richmond Hill mine are related to breccia pipe emplacement and influenced by the Precambrian foliation.Fractures in sediment-hosted (ACFR) and intrusion-hosted (Gilt Edge) deposits are mode I systematic joints. These fractures, and similar ones examined in seven locations outside the mines, are related mostly to the formation of the Lead-Deadwood dome. Fracture trends vary from one area to another depending on their location with respect to the dome. Other factors, such as the Black Hills uplift, pluton emplacement, and Precambrian foliation, may also affect the fracture trends. "The schist-, sediment-, and intrusion-hosted Tertiary Au-Ag hydrothermal deposits of the northern Black Hills, South Dakota are localized and controlled by various types of fractures. This study is an attempt to distinguish between and discuss the possible causes of these fractures in three mines: Richmond Hill, Annie Creek – Foley Ridge (ACFR), and Gilt Edge.Five models based on the structural and tectonic settings of the northern Black Hills are proposed for the fracture origin. In Richmond Hill mine, mineralized fractures within the schist-hosted deposits are in the form of veinlets and stockworks. Larger veins filling open spaces along schistosity planes are also present. Fractures in Richmond Hill mine are related to breccia pipe emplacement and influenced by the Precambrian foliation.Fractures in sediment-hosted (ACFR) and intrusion-hosted (Gilt Edge) deposits are mode I systematic joints. These fractures, and similar ones examined in seven locations outside the mines, are related mostly to the formation of the Lead-Deadwood dome. Fracture trends vary from one area to another depending on their location with respect to the dome. Other factors, such as the Black Hills uplift, pluton emplacement, and Precambrian foliation, may also affect the fracture trends.
