The Ilo Smelter has been continuously operating since 1960 with Reverberatory furnaces and Pierce Smith converters producing blister copper. The original installed capacity of 1.134 tons per day of concentrated was expanded in 1976. A process of modernization started in 1995 and 1998 with the installation of an El Teniente Converter, a sulfuric acid plant and an oxygen plant to reduce the gaseous emissions to the atmosphere. With the official approval of the Environmental Compliance and Management Program (Programa de Adecuaci6n y Manejo Ambiental - PAMA) in January 1997, Southern Peru Copper Corporation made a commitment to capture 91. 7% of the S02 generated at the smelter by January 2007. After an evaluation of six different technologies, the ISASMEL T process was selected because it can be easily adapted to the present operation, has a lower capital cost and it is a simple process. The fast learning curve to reach the total capacity will allow to fulfill the PAMA commitment in time. The project construction is in process and SPCC is prepared for a successful start-up and transition of the current operations at the end of year 2006. This paper outlines the factors considered by SPCC in its choice of ISASMEL T technology and describes the construction and the start-up activities of the new facilities.

Talc has been mined at Madoc since 1896, the oldest mine in continuous operation in Canada. Canada Talc Industries Limited operates the Henderson and Conley deposits by underground methods. A newly discovered East zone is being de veloped by open pit. The raw Henderson talc is a foliated talc schist of high purity and whiteness; Conley talc is a white talcose dolomite. Products are used primarily as fillers in paints, plastics and rubber.

This paper outlines the position and capabilities of Western Canada's bituminous coal industry, and indicates the increasing importance of Japan as an export market. The use of coal in Japan is reviewed, especially as regards future trends, and an appraisal is made of Canadian coal in comparison with domestic Japanese coal and imports from other countries. The importance of maintaining a solid nucleous within the Canadian bituminous coal industry is emphasized. I N RECENT years, Japan has emerged as a valuable market for Canadian exports. The first major product exported in volume to Japan was wheat, which has become very successfully established in Japanese markets. Following this, iron ore gradually found a market in Japan, with exports usually based on long-term contracts. The equilibrium solubilities of gibbsite, Al(OH)3, and boehmite, A1OOH, have been extensively studied in our laboratory from 30 to 90°C, and 100 to 300°C, respectively, to ionic strengths of 5 mol.kg-1 (NaC1) over a wide range of pH. The resulting solubility constants have been treated with consistent empirical models that incorporate appropriate experimental data taken from the literature. These studies were initiated in part to understand and quantify scale formation in geothermal fields as a result of fluid re-injection from electric power generating plants. Most of the experimental results were obtained through application of a unique potentiometric method that allows for rapid, precise measurement of the in situ pH and allows the approach to equilibrium to be monitored from under- and super-saturation. The experimental program was extended to deal with more basic solutions (e.g., five molal NaOH), in which the dissolution of boehmite was measured for application to the refining of bauxite by the Bayer process. More recent results in strong caustic solutions at temperatures below 90°C were obtained to investigate the dissolution of aluminum-containing sludge from holding tanks at the Savannah River waste reprocessing site. In this case the solubility enhancing effects (kinetic and equilibrium) of triethanolamine were also established and quantified. Finally, potentiometric solubility experiments were conducted (50°C in 0.l mol-kg-1, NaCl) on aluminum alloy sheets to identify mainly the nature of the aluminum oxide/hydroxide surface layer formed under these conditions.

IN THE operation of most mines, hoisting ropes, made of steel, play a very important part in the conveying of men and material between surface and the underground workings. It is obvious that, in order to maintain a maximum degree of safety, certain restrictions must be placed on the loads that may be carried by hoisting ropes, as well as on other factors that may affect the life of the rope. It is the purpose of this paper to suggest ?a new method of defining the necessary restrictions. The three main stresses in a hoisting rope are the static stress, bending stress, and dynamic stress. Crushing stresses, which are also present, are largely indeterminate and may best be allowed for by proper grooving of drum and sheaves, by adequate inspection of cross-over points, and by limiting the number of layers on the drum. They will, therefore, not be considered in this analysis. In the ?recent Ontario regulations, the limiting conditions for the main stresses are specified separately. The static stress is limited by setting a minimum static safety factor of 5.0 The dynamic stresses are allowed for by specifying a minimum capacity factor of 8.5, which has the effect of increasing the safety factor required at smaller depths in a uniform manner. The bending stresses are limited by calling for a drum-dia./rope-dia. ratio of at least 60 for ropes up to 1 inch in diameter and 80 for ropes greater than 1 inch in diameter. One disadvantage of this method is that the controls are too rigid and do not allow the operator sufficient freedom of action within safe limits.

"To understand the operation of jigs and other separating processes based on differences in gravity, it is desirable to analyse the motion of various particles in given media under specific conditions. A summary of the earlier theories shows that they lead to unsatisfactory or excessively complicated formulae in cases such as coal jigging. By adopting a simplified theory of the motion of particles in a fluid, the size and duration of the initial accelerated motion of a particle falling in hindered settling can be calculated. Based on this mathematical analysis, examples referring to actual coal jigging practice show that it is desirable to prolong and/or repeat, as frequently as possible, the optimum conditions corresponding to an effective acceleration of the particles. The separation is then obtained according to gravity rather than to particle dimensions, as would be the case if the velocity of the particles• were allowed to approach its terminal value. To achieve this gravity separation, it is suggested that the suction phase of the jigging cycle be artificially prolonged and the frequency of pulsations increased as much as possible for washing the coals of smaller sizes."

This type of microscopic investigation, although still in its infancy, has already found practical applications in several different phases of mining activity. The study of the transparent minerals in rocks, by means of the ordinary petrographic microscope, has for long been a very useful supplement to observations in the field, but the opaque minerals, until recently, have had to rest content with a more or less superficial determination with the hand-lens or the blow-pipe. In a great many cases, particularly where the association of metallics has been somewhat complex, this has been entirely inadequate, and the determination of these opaque minerals under the micro- scope, has opened up a new field of scientific investigation that bids fair to surpass, in practical value at least, the micro-scopic determination of the rock-forming minerals. As the details of this kind of microscopy are possibly not entirely familiar to all mining men, it might be well to outline them very briefly before dealing with the practical directions in which this method may be applied. The ordinary petro-graphic microscope, with but one extra attachment, will serve for this work. A small reflecting device, called a vertical illuminator, is inserted immediately above the objective lens. This reflects the light down to the surface of the specimen and from here the light is directed up the middle of the microscope tube to the eye. As it is desirable that the maximum amount of reflection should be secured from the surface of the section, it is first polished and set in a position perpendicular to the vertical axis of the microscope.

Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde S.A.A leaches secondary copper sulfides. In recent years, the mine has introduced innovations that have improved the management of mineral crushing, agglomeration, curing, and leaching. The crushing plant, for example, uses the concepts of degree of balance and percentage of time in an operationally balanced state which, displayed in real time, facilitate more intensive and uniform utilization of the crushers. High agglomerate quality is ensured with the correct dose of moisture, which is adjusted to the changing characteristics of the mineral through the use of electrical conductivity measurements. The amount of acid used for curing the agglomerate is also adjusted by using quality control information. Finally, the stockpile irrigation regime is managed using the criteria established by the "Lixiviant Request Rate", which optimizes the addition of leaching solution, creating such benefits as faster recovery, and reduced acid and energy consumption.

"A mechanistic model of axial charge segregation in rotating drums is presented. We show that granular material composed of different frictional properties diffuse into axial bands as a consequence of concentration fluctuations in the free surface layer that is caused by friction-limited mobility. A Bagnoldian stress assumption ensures an asymmetric free surface profile thereby providing the essential ingredients for the evolution of axial bands and the subsequent band coarsening observed in the literature. The formulation is sensitive to the boundary conditions of tumbling mills, including particle size and density, mill speed, inter-particle bulk friction, end wall friction and drum geometry (length and diameter).INTRODUCTIONA mechanism to fully describe the axial segregation of charge in a rotating drum remains elusive to the mineral processing industry. With regard to low aspect ratio mills (like ball mills), current thinking favours the use of closed circuit mills with correspondingly low residence times to offset the completely random contact probabilities between particles and balls (Wills & Napier-Munn, 2006). Conical end caps are argued to exploit the centrifugal force to achieve a regular gradation of ball size along the mill with larger sizes at the feed end and smaller ones closer to the discharge. However; segregation along the length has been observed in the absence of conical end caps (Oyama, 1939; Levine, 1999): In these investigations, sufficient differences in the particle’s mechanical properties (particle size, density, shape, surface roughness) was enough to successfully achieve axial segregation. Figure 1 shows the segregation of a bimodal distribution (by size) into bands of larger (darker colour) and smaller (lighter colour) particles."

The presence of helical ribs in smooth-bore round pipe results in the transport of granular solid particles m water at a much lower velocity than required to transport the same solids in a smooth pipe. The helical motion imparted to the flowing mixture effectively returns settled solid particles to the main stream. The flow may be stopped and restarted without difficulty. Due to the lower velocity required for satisfactory transport large power savings are realized. Also: due to lower velocity, the wear on the pipe walls is much reduced. For satisfactory performance, the ribs should have a high angle relative to the long axis of the pipe and the lineal spacing between adjacent ribs should be modest.

The precipitation of Fe(III) to form ferrihydrite in the presence of arsenic is the United States EPA's Best Demonstrated Available Technology for treating arsenic-containing hydrometallurgical solutions and waste streams. This technology has been widely adopted throughout the world and developments have been well reviewed. The adsorption and long-term stability of ferrihydrite can be improved by co-precipitating Fe(III) and Al(III) together to form an aluminum-modified ferrihydrite. Arsenate adsorption into ferrihydrite and modified ferrihydrite as a function of pH, Fe/As or (Al+Fe)/As mole ratio, and the initial As(V) concentration is presented and compared. The results of long-term aging of both adsorbents at 70°C for over a year are also summarized.

Interest has recently been revived in the recovery of tantalum from the Bernie Lake pegmatite deposit. A gravity concentration process was developed to give satisfactory recovery and concentrate grade. The application of high-intensity magnetic separation was also stud1ed. A pilot-plant investigation that confirmed the laboratory testing and provided a commercial-grade concentrate 1s described.

"Exampling of the tunneling task in the Tsengwen Reservoir Transbasin Diversion (TRTD) in southern Taiwan, this study investigates the application of the Drilling Survey System (DRISS) in both Drilling and Blasting (D&B)- and Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)-excavated sections. In the D&B section, a nonlinear relationship exists between drilling energy and uniaxial compressive strength of rock mass, in which a reasonable coefficient of determination can be analyzed statistically. Additionally, the DRISS accurately predicted an unfavorable section with a valuable position. The magnitude of uniaxial compressive strength back calculated using DRISS data also matches those acquired from geological investigations with different approaches. Study results indicate that the DRISS is an effective tool for fore-probing of both D&B- and TBM-excavated tunnels. INTRODUCTIONModern advancements in geological and geophysical investigations, and drilling techniques, have provided valuable information for detecting and interpreting geological conditions of rock tunnels with a resolution of several to ten of meters (Brückl et al., 2001, 2008, Lorang et al., 2005). Nevertheless, construction risks remain considerable during tunnel excavation, especially when a tunnel was excavated by a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Predictions of the local fault, shear zone, and other minor geological features, which may cause moderate collapse or excessive deformation of rocks surrounding the tunnel, before tunnel excavation is highly desirable for high-quality tunnel construction and economically efficient project management.Rather than conventional geophysical prospection methodologies, which always favor large-scale investigation with moderate precision, this study focuses on the drilling method probing ahead of a tunnel. The goal of such an investigation is not only to prevent catastrophic collapse, but also to provide quantitative or semi-quantitative information for estimation of the mechanical parameters of rock mass.For the tunneling task in the Tsengwen Reservoir Transbasin Diversion (TRTD) in southern Taiwan, a drilling survey system is adopted for fore probing. Data collected from both drilling and blasting (D&B) and TBM-excavated sections are analyzed statistically and discussed. "IntroductionTHE PURPOSE of this paper is to describe the results of a preliminary investigation of a method thought to be useful in interpreting geological structures in un-metamorphosed sedimentary rocks. The writer is not aware of the method having been described or investigated previously, although no thorough search of the literature has been made.The method to •be described is based on the assumption that, in argillaceous sedimentary rocks, certain ceramic properties are diagnostic for certain beds within areas of variable limits.Two ceramic properties• have been investigated: pyrometric cone equivalent (P.C.E.), and bloating characteristics of shales. The enquiry has been directed toward testing the usefulness of these properties in determining the following:A -The correlation of shale beds and, by inference, of coal seams, sandstone beds, or other such structures associated with them.B.-The location of contacts between marine and non-marine shales where lithological, palaeontological, or other evidence is lacking.Limitations of time and facilities have prevented a thorough investigation of this problem. The results given in the present paper are preliminary only. It is hoped, however, that they will occasion discussion or even lead to more thorough investigation of the method by individuals or organizations.There are, admittedly, various limitations to the proposed method. It is thought to show some promise when used in conjunction with the well-known and established methods used in stratigraphic correlation and, more particularly, when the conventional methods are not applicable."

"ST Equipment & Technology, LLC (STET) has developed a processing system based on tribo-electrostatic belt separation that provides the mineral processing industry a means to beneficiate fine materials with an entirely dry technology. In contrast to other electrostatic separation processes that are typically limited to particles greater than 75 µm in size, the triboelectric belt separator is ideally suited for separation of very fine (<1 µm) to moderately coarse (300 µm) particles with very high throughput. The high efficiency multi-stage separation through internal charging/recharging and recycle results in far superior separations that can be achieved with a conventional single-stage free-fall tribo-electrostatic separator. The triboelectric belt separator technology has been used to separate a wide range of materials including mixtures of glassy aluminosilicates/carbon, calcite/quartz, talc/magnesite, and barite/quartz. Separation results are presented for selected industrial mineral sources. An economic comparison of using the tribo-electrostatic belt separation versus conventional flotation for barite / quartz separation illustrates the advantages of dry processing for minerals.INTRODUCTIONThe lack of access to fresh water is becoming a major factor affecting the feasibility of mining projects around the world. According to Hubert Fleming, former global director for Hatch Water, “Of all the mining projects in the world that have either been stopped or slowed down over the past year, it has been, in almost 100% of the cases, a result of water, either directly or indirectly” (Blin et al., 2013). Dry mineral processing methods offer a solution to this looming problem."

Today, systems and machinery usually are designed to meet only one specific customer?s requirements. One reason for this is that underground automation and smart functions are often developed tightly together with a customer. This is natural, since risk and cost can be shared between the customer and the supplier. Nevertheless, when the automation product develops and the market increase this will cause problems: The highly specialized products will not fulfill the next customer?s demands. In order to cope with this problem, Atlas Copco works towards a common platform. Instead of designing solutions for specific customers, we will lift the abstraction and focus on standardized modules. These modules, or function blocks, can then be combined in a large variety of configurations. The benefits of combining modules into products are, for example: increased flexibility when options are available for many machines; easier commissioning and maintenance since less different spare parts and tools are needed; and easier operation since the user interfaces have a similar look and feel. This paper will present the ongoing work towards standardized modules. We will discuss how our Rig Control System (RCS) allows for modular design at Atlas Copco. RCS has number of standardized modules that are used in different surface and underground mining and tunneling equipment. These modules are also used for optional products such as, drilling, radio-remote control, and telematics systems.

Introduction To discuss all the technical details of incorporation laws, security laws, underwriting procedures, codes, and ethics-as laid down by varous associations -would be impossible in the time which has been allotted to me. My remarks, therefore, will be made in a very general way and will naturally be coloured with experiences which my firm and I have had. There is a common expression that "money makes the mare go". I hardly have to mention here that the best prospect in the country is of very little value unless its prospects can be developed-and this requires large capital expenditures. The art and problems surrounding the raising of this money is a long and interesting story. Since by its very nature mining is risky, the appraising of its risks in the many phases of its development programme is continuous. Very few men-if any-and very few corporations -if any -can afford to take all the risk of mining. Because of taxation policies-and the very scheme of present-day living -the truth of this statement can be seen throughout the whole industry by a close examination of the records. Since this is so, it is essential that the mechanics of distributing risk on a sound, and equitable basis be known to those engaged in the business and to the investor or spectator who proposes to risk his funds in the industry. Perhaps the greatest stimulant to modern business activities has been the creation of corporate bodies. It is evident, from the number of charters being granted by various jurisdictions, that this method of doing business is becoming more and more important. A limited company -or corporation-can be defined as a fictitious person existing solely in contemplation of the law.

"The one point left off the table was pumping costs, i.e. the cost of pumping to the cyclones.At East Malartic 5 x 5 S R L pumps that had been used to pump the classifier overflow were used to pump the rod and ball mill discharges to the cyclones. Maintenance costs on the pumps rose from $105 in 6 months to $1000 per month. The pumps had to be operated at 1150 rpm and impellers lasted only 5 to 6 days. These pumps were replaced by 6 x 6 S R. L. pumps operating at 825 rpm, but at this speed the coarser sands settled and plugged the pipe lines and the speed was increased to 925 rpm. The maintenance cost is now $100 per m::rnth which is 0 003 cents per ton milled. The impellers now last 1 month and the casing linings 6 months.Density meters are often used on cyclone overflows and sometimes on the cyclone feed. Haliburton weighted tube density meters are used in some plants. They are cheaper than the radioactive density controller, $2500 as compared to $ 6000The angle of the discharge spray from the apex can be used to judge the quality of perform1nce of a cyclone.For ordinary metallurgical applications the inside slope of the cyclone is not too important but for fine separation steeper slopes are used.The cyclone is a versatile tool and will handle considerable variations in feed tonnage - probably up to 15%. Above this variation the number of cyclones used has to be increased or decreased or the tonnage fed to them has to be adjusted"

This paper describes the results of a laboratory study on the upgrading of Algoma siderite by the amine flotation of silica and silicate gangue. The experiments indicate that a virtually complete removal of silica is possible in a rougher flotation con-ducted in tap water at natural pH, without prior desliming of the ore. Grinding considerably finer than the apparent liberation size is essential for maximum silica rejection. A cationic collector, Aeromine 3037, gave best results when used in combination with a modifier. Of the several modifiers tested, a Dutch potato dextrin, Dextrin 4356, was found to be the most effective. Both iron recovery and the grade of the final iron product are enhanced by floating the pyrite contained in the ore prior to the amine flotation of the silica, and by scalping the magnetics from the silica concentrate.
