"IntroductionThe Hull iron range, comprising the Forsyth, Scott , Baldwin and Lawless properties (Fig. I), is in Gatineau Park, on the outskirt s o f the city of Hull , and about 6 miles (10 kilometres) northwest of the Federal Parliament Buildings.The deposits have been known many years and described numerous times, although the history has been treated lightly in former publications. Total ore shipments have been calculated at 122,700 long tons, of which over 80% were mined before 1900 and 74% in two brief periods: 1870-74 and 1880-82. It is surprising that the period 1870-74 has been overlooked by most authors and 1880-82 ignored altogether. More surprising, the essential data for these two periods are contained in manuscripts of the Robert Bell collection, which must have been available to officers of the Geological Survey o f Canada.The period 1801-1874 ha s already been covered by the writer in ""Pioneer mines”, but much information has come to light since publication. The present paper is therefore based o n new data and a fresh appraisal. However, little additional data were found for the early history (1801-1854) or for the legal cases involving A.H. Baldwin, and these parts were mainly summarized from the relevant sections of the above-mentioned publication.GeologyThe ore deposits are all situated somewhat below the middle of a graphitic, calcitic marble horizon, here folded into a northeast-plunging synform. The Forsyth, Scott and Baldwin deposits are on the south limb of the synform; the Lawless is on the north limb. The marble is underlain by three non-carbonate groups: biotite gneiss with interlayered quartzite (top), granite gneiss and skarn (middle), and biotite-garnet gneiss (bottom). Below these groups is a lower horizon of graphitic, calcitic marble. The whole sequence is Precambrian and has been subjected to high-grade (Grenvillian) metamorphism, but, in the north, is cut by an unmetamorphosed Cambro-Ordovician diabase dyke. When producing high grade mattes in smelter plants, copper losses in the slag are inevitable. Hence, the recovery of copper from slag has been the focus of many research projects, copper flotation being a widely used process. In the Khatoonabad converter, 200 t/d of slag are presently produced with a grade of 2.3% Cu. Assuming a 85% recovery by flotation, about 3.9 t/d copper could be produced, which is of prime importance economically. In the present work, a sample of this slag was crushed and ground in the laboratory to liberate the copper-bearing minerals. Following mineralogical studies, optimum laboratory flotation parameters were obtained, resulting in 90.27 % recovery and 9.42% of copper grade for the rougher stage. At pilot scale, a pulp of 28% solids was floated at ph 10.5 using 40 git of Z6, 25 git of R407 and 20 git of MIBC and A65. A recovery of 83.52% was obtained for a concentrate grade of 28.36% Cu. In the rougher cells, the feed consisted of particles 94% finer than 74 microns whereas in the cleaning stage, particles were 95% finer than 44 microns. Based on the obtained results, the Sarcheshmeh Khatoonabad converter slag is presently being fed to the Chargonbad flotation plant, where a concentrate of 32% copper at 86% recovery is being produced.

"The high rock pressures at the deeper levels of the Tsumeb Mine have necessitated the changing of the mining methods and the introduction of cable bolts. After two rockfalls in the cable-bolted stopes, the mechanics of cable bolting were investigated. Practical methods were developed to find the best grout mixtures, the bond stresses between cables and cement, the bond stresses between rock and cement and the load on the cable bolts, which was mathematically calculated from data observed underground. The design of the cable bolt support system as used at the Tsumeb Mine is explained. GeneralThe Tsumeb Mine is in northern South West Africa/Namibia, approximately 400 km by road from the capital city, Windhoek, at an elevation of 1300 m above sea level. Mining operations in Tsumeb were started in 1905 by the Otavi Minen und Eisenbahn Gesellschaft and continued, with an interruption during the Depre ssion, until 1940, when the mine was closed and taken over by the Custodian of Enemy Property. The present owner, Tsumeb Corporation Limited, obtained the mine in 1947 and restarted the underground mining operations in 1949 after the mine was dewatered. Currently, the stoping operations are between 26 Level (840 m below surface) and 38 Level (1260 m below surface). In addition, the mine is an important silver producer and has produced 670,100 kg of silver since 1947."

"A description is given of a series of tests performed to determine the comparative effects which dynamic and static straining, in compression, have on the physical strength properties of mild steel and an aluminum alloy. The dynamic deformation was imposed during the passage of single stress pulses of about 100 micro-second duration. These pulses were recorded with strain gauges mounted near both ends of the specimen. The resulting records were analysed using a simple wave theory; there from the dynamic stress-strain curves for the respective metals were deter-mined and were then compared with the static stress-strain relation. The respective hardnesses of the metals after deformation are evaluates by means of static stress-strain curves in compression. The micro-structures of the metals before and after deformation are also shown. It is observed that dynamic de-formation considerably modifies the rate of strain hardening. This modified hardening appears to be persistent. The observed differences in physical strength properties and micro-structures are discussed in the light of the accepted dislocation theory for metals."

DURING the last three years, investigations on the aluminum reduction of magnesium-bearing compounds have been initiated at the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry, The Technical University of Norway. The results of these investigations are reported in this paper. Very little information exists in the literature on the reaction between magnesium compounds and metallic aluminum. The available information itself is conflicting, and, to clarify the existing discrepancy, the reactions between aluminum and magnesium oxide (MgO), caJcined dolomite (CaO . MgO) and olivine (Mg2SiO.) were studied. The logical approach for the study of these reactions between condensed states with the formation of a gaseous phase is, ( 1) the measurement of the equilibrium vapour pressure of the gas, in this case magnesium, associated with the respective reactions and, (2) the identification of the end products of the reaction in order to establish the re-action scheme.

The need for selective metal separations has increased as the mining industry encounters more complex ore bodies and demand for higher performance end products expands. The Molecular Recognition Technology (MRT) process uses highly selective SuperLig® resins to remove desired metals from a variety of solutions in the mining and metals processing and recovery industries. MRT separation processes efficiently produce high purity metal products. In this paper, applications of MRT to metal recovery at mg/L to multiple g/L concentration levels are presented and discussed. Specific examples in the precious metal, nickel, cobalt, zinc, copper, and rare earth industries are given.

It is well known that there are many ways to process copper concentrates into copper anodes using the pyrometallurgical route. All modern copper smelting technologies are fundamentally energy efficient and environmentally safe options, and therefore choosing one depends on the desired capacity range, feed impurity levels, plant location, flexibility needs, overall energy use, and of course smelter economics in both the short and long term. This paper focuses on comparing different solutions which have potentially the lowest variable opex (operational expense), meaning in practice finding out which technology offers the best chances for profit maximization under certain scenarios. For the comparison, we chose to have a closer look at Outotec Flash Smelting (FSF) – Peirce-Smith Converting (PSC), Outotec Flash Smelting (FSF) – Outotec- Kennecott Flash Converting (FCF), Outotec Ausmelt TSL Smelting (ASF) - Peirce-Smith Converting (PSC), Outotec Ausmelt TSL Smelting (ASF) - Outotec Ausmelt TSL Converting (ACF), Mitsubishi Smelting Process (MIT), Bottom Blowing Reactor (BBR) – Bottom Blowing Continuous Converting (BCC), and Side Blowing Furnace (SBF) - Top Blowing Converting (TBC) since these seem to be the main state-of-art technologies now being applied in many recent copper smelter projects around the world. The work was carried out by modelling each smelting route by using the new HSC SIM 9 simulation software and applying operation time, energy, and consumables consumption numbers for each unit process and stream. Combined with cost data, the exercise produced a rich set of information which will be shown in detail for each area per scenario. The authors’ goal here was to provide a fair comparison where each technology can be evaluated from various perspectives such as electricity use or refractory consumption. INTRODUCTION Copper can be produced either pyrometallurgically or hydrometallurgically. The hydrometallurgical route is used only for a limited amount of the world’s copper production (~20%) and is normally only considered in connection with in-situ leaching of copper ores. On the other hand, most of the copper extraction from Cu-Fe-S minerals is pyrometallurgical (~80%) (Schlesinger 2011, ICSG 2017). "RésuméL’analyse des séquences d’exploitation, actuellement en usage pour les gisements très inclinés, a démontré qu’elles ne sont pas toujours optimales du point de vue du contrôle des terrains et de la concentration des travaux d’abattage (nombre de chantiers simultanément en opération). Effectivement plusieurs séquences sont très propices à la création des nombreuses zones de hautes contraintes, qui sont à l’origine des effets de pilier. L’étude de cas de la mine Lac Shortt a démontré que certaines séquences d’exploitation, actuellement en usage, ne sont surtout pas adéquates dans le cas d’un état élevé des contraintes naturelles. En effet la mine a eu de sérieuses problèmes avec le contrôle des terrains (coups de terrains et les effondrements des épontes). Ces effondrements étaient responsables de la dilution excessive et des pertes importantes des réserves minières. Les deux nouvelles séquences proposées, visent la meilleure redistribution des contraintes d’exploitation en vue d’éliminer la création des effets de pilier. En plus elles permettent une concentration plus élevée des travaux d’abattage.À notre avis les séquences proposées pourraient améliorer substantiellement la stabilité des chantiers d’abattage et par la suite les performances technique et économique des opérations souterraines. ABSTRACTThe planning of underground mining sequences represents an important aspect of the mining operation. The analysis of mining sequences actually in use for very steep orebodies has demonstrated that they are not always optimal, considering ground control and the number of stopes simultaneously in extraction. These sequences are conducive to the creation in the rockmass of several stressed zones caused by pillar effects. The case study of Lac Shortt mine showed that the sequences of exploitation currently in use are not adequate especially in the case of a high state of the natural constraints. Indeed, the mine had serious problems with ground control (rock bursts and collapse of walls). These collapses were responsible for excessive dilution and significant losses of mining reserves. The two new sequences suggested aim for the best redistribution of exploitation constraints in order to eliminate creation of pillar effects. Moreover, they allow a higher number of stopes to be extracted simultaneously. In the opinion of the authors, the sequences suggested could substantially improve the stability of working areas and, thereafter, technical and economical performances of the underground operations."

"The addition of sulphidic materials in the leaching of nickel laterites has several potential benefits that include improvements in the rheological behaviour of the blends, reductions in the sulphuric acid and steam requirements, sweetening of the nickel grade of the combined feed material, and the option of using a range of sulphidic materials. The current study examines the oxidative processing of 30% w/w blends of nickel concentrate and nickel laterite ore at 250oC. In particular, the viability of using low oxygen overpressures was examined for significant amounts of nickel flotation concentrate, up to 12% w/w. Further to this the impact of process water quality, in particular the presence of chloride, upon the kinetics of extraction and the mineralogy of the residue were also investigated. This paper will present the results of preliminary work in this area.INTRODUCTIONThe use of sulphidic ore as a source of sulphuric acid during oxidative hydrometallurgical processing is not a novel idea and can be traced back over forty years (Seidel & Fitzhugh, 1968). A series of patents pertaining to application of this approach for laterite ores can be subsequently found (O’Neill, 1973; Opratko et al., 1974; Rodriguez, 2008a, 2008b; O’Callaghan, 2010; Liu et al., 2011) and a few of articles containing published data (Ferron & Fleming, 2004; Quinn et al., 2009). The use of pyrrhotite tailings as a source of sulphuric acid has also been employed for the leaching of converter slags (Perederiy et al., 2011).It is known that hydrometallurgical operations such as the HPAL plant at Murrin Murrin have added small amounts of sulphides as either transitional (mixed sulphide/oxide) ore or non-smeltable concentrate. This can improve the rheology (Rodriguez, 2009) and provide heat credits. However these plants are generally limited in their ability to add such materials due to their reducing nature and given under highly acidic conditions that the breakdown potential of the titanium used for the autoclave lining is significantly reduced. A suitable oxidant must therefore be present to ensure the potential remains sufficiently high."

This paper presents a new type of bolt with full thread and uniform strength, and fabricated with a Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) bolt-making machine designed by the authors. The mechanical performance of the new bolt is assessed with strength tests conducted with the bolt in acid, alkaline and saline water conditions, with increasing concentration. The purpose is to test the new GFRP bolt?s mechanical performance in harsh conditions, especially metal mines with acid or alkaline environments. Comparison of the color, weight, size and antistatic ability of the GFRP bolt before and after it is immersion in solution is presented. Changes in tensile and shear strength, torsion, and anchoring force were evaluated in the laboratory. The results show that the mechanical properties of the GFRP bolt are more sensitive in alkaline than in acid and saline water. However, the loss ratio of mechanical properties of the GFRP bolt is very small according to the results of tensile and shear strength, torsion and anchoring force. The new bolt can be useful for applications in acid or other harsh mines.

"Abstract - Alkali-alumina and MgO-alumina plots are an effective instrument for displaying chemical and mineralogical compositions of altered and unaltered rhyolites and rhyodacites. They reveal that most supposedly unaltered rhyolites, apart from those of Cenozoic age, have undergone losses in Na2O and gains in K2O. The extreme loss of Na2O from highly altered rhyolites immediately adjacent to VMS deposits is strikingly illustrated by alkali-alumina plots. MgO/Al2O3 vs. K2O/Al2O3 diagrams display a strong negative correlation between MgO and K2O that results from the conversion of sericite to chlorite. A similar negative correlation between MgO and whole-rock d18O is apparent on plots of these two parameters. Alkali-alumina plots underscore problems in selecting appropriate precursor compositions required for mass-balance calculations. Molar ratio plots are a viable alternative to such calculations. Sommaire -Les diagrammes alcali-alumine et MgO-alumine constituent un instrument efficace pour la représentation des compositions chimiques et minéralogiques des rhyolites et rhyodacites altérées et fraîches.Ces diagrammes révèlent qu’à l'exception de celles d’âge Cénozoïque, la plupart des rhyolites qualifiées de fraîches ont subi une perte de Na2O et un gain de K2O. L’intense perte en Na2O que l’on note dans les rhyolites fortement altérées associées aux gîtes de type SMV est particulièrement bien mise en évidence par le diagramme alcali-alumine. Le diagramme MgO/Al2O3 vs. K2O/Al2O3 montre une forte corrélation inverse entre le MgO et le K2O due à la conversion de la séricite en chlorite. Une corrélation inverse analogue entre le MgO et le d18O de la roche totale s’observe sur un graphe comparant ces deux paramètres. L’usage du diagramme alcali-alumine fait ressortir combien il peut être difficile de choisir un précurseur de composition appropriée pour des calculs de balance de masse. Les diagrammes de rapport molaire constituent une alternative à de tels calculs."

"Geophysical data are often presented on maps, sections or profiles with minimal data processing. A common example is magnetic data, in which the diurnal-free raw readings are merely contoured on a map. Other examples include profile presentation of VLF-EM data, IP pseudo-sections and airborne EM anomalies which may be shown on a map with only the measured amplitudes indicated.In recent years, efforts have been directed to the portraying of data in more useful forms. A number of algorithms (i.e., manipulative procedures and equations) have proven to contribute significantly to the usefulness of geophysical data. Some can be applied manually; others are sufficiently complicated to require a computer. Some merely alter the data to a more useful geometric form without altering the units. Others yield quantitative estimates of source body parameters such as conductivity and shape. Several examples follow:1. A simple algorithm is in common use which transforms noisy non-contourable VLF-EM data into less noisy contourable data. The input is the dip angle in degrees or per cent and the output is also in these same units.2. A simple algorithm has recently been developed which allows multi-level dipole-dipole IP data to be contoured on a map. Again, the units are not altered.3. A relatively complicated algorithm is in common use which transforms non-contourable height-sensitive helicopter EM data into contourable resistivity data,4. An algorithm has been recently developed which transforms non-contourable height-sensitive EM data into contourable weight per cent magnetite.The purpose of all the above techniques is to present the data in a simplified form. This, in turn, allows an easier assimilation by the user of much of the information content of the data."

"The aim in flotation systems is to control the grade and recovery of the product., numerical method or sampling and analysis is used to achieve this goal. Weakness of measuring instruments, lack of process knowledge, deficiencies in management and data processing in the control of flotation cells, has led the academic and industrial units to use numerical models. In this regard, using the results obtained from the experimental design carried out in the DTP line of Gol Gohar industrial and mining complex, a regression model was developed based on the analysis of variance. To present this model, after variance analysis of factors and interactions, all models were investigated and the final model was created based on 75% of the data. The model was tested with the remaining 25% of the data to confirm the goodness of the fit. The coefficient of determination for training and testing resulted 71% and 74%. Moreover, a feed forward back propagation neural network with different layers and neuron was used to model the results. The best network structure was 6-27-1 and the coefficient of determination for this network was 99% and 98% for training and test respectively. Given the complexity of neural network models and the relatively low accuracy of the regression model, neural network has a priority assuming we have access to a specialist. In addition, the results obtained from neural network can be used as expert systems to control and optimize the flotation cells.INTRODUCTIONThe primary objective of the flotation cell control is to maintain the product's (in this case tailing) recovery and grade, which represents the index for process efficiency and product quality. Continuous estimation of these indexes requires a significant amount of maintenance, and calibration of the continuous analyzers, in order to maintain an acceptable level of accuracy. Weakness of measurement equipment, lack of process knowledge and the general deficiency in management and processing of data in the flotation cell control, will lead industrial units to use smart methods such as mathematical models, regression and neural networks in near future (Panahi, Abdollahzadeh, & Sam, 2010). Artificial neural networks are inspired by the very complex structure of human brain in which millions of nerve cells solve problems or store information by communicating with each other. The duty of neural networks learning. It should be noted that learning in artificial neural networks is limited, and what is practically considered is the computing power of the network. A neural network consists of units called neurons, and has the capacity to handle a set of input data to produce a desired output data set. Each of these input and output data sets can be assumed as a vector (Soltanmohammadi & Noparast, 2006)."

The Strathcona mine, with a large new underground operation and concentrator, was recently brought into\ production by Falconbridge Nickel Mines Ltd. The tailings disposal and water utilization problems at Strathcona are described in this paper, with sections devoted to the Moose Lake watershed system, tailing impounds, the construction of dams and the operation of the Moose Lake neutralization plant for the elimination of acidity, including the equipment used.

"This paper examines the impact of the various assumptions that go into an economic evaluation, and shows how these can be combined to show an exciting result that may not really exist. An example of an embellished case (the kind that one frequently sees when projects are being promoted) is developed and the cumulative impact is analysed to show the actual project underneath. The paper also points out some areas to watch for overly optimistic assumptions such as prices, inflation, and debt. The concept of a ""bare bones"" base case is proposed (constant metal prices, constant dollars, no inflation, no debt, no interest, on a project basis, after tax) as a common reference point.As well, the discount rate is examined as a fundamental means of reflecting risk in discounted cash flow evaluations. Current industry practice is discussed, and a methodology for the analysis of risk levels is proposed that assesses the constituent components of the discount rate: real interest, mineral project risks, and country risk.INTRODUCTIONOften, the first time that all of the technical and economic data for a mineral project comes together in one place is when the economic evaluation is developed. This typically happens when work on the project has progressed to a sufficient level of detail that the effort to produce a year-by-year cash flow is justified, usually at the pre-feasibility or feasibility study stage. The data involved will include:• production; tonnes waste and ore mined, ore grade, mining recovery, metallurgical recovery, metal sold• revenue; metal price, smelting & refining charges, marketing costs• operating Costs; mining, milling, administration, fees, royalties• capital Costs; exploration, development, construction, indirect costs (engineering, management), contingencies, start-up, inventories, working capital, replacement and sustaining capital, closure costs• taxes and royalties• exclusions; depreciation (this is not a cash item), sunk costs (only costs going forward)."

Every year the conventional direct reduction processes ? Midrex and HYL III ? increased their market share in the world steel production, even though they are only economically feasible in countries where natural gas is available at competitive prices. In this context, the new Midrex projects are based on large reactors (Megamod - 1.5 to 1.8 Mt/y of DRI), reduction temperatures of the metallic burden up to 850oC, with bustle gas temperatures between 960oC e 1050oC. Thus, the requirements of metallic burden performance, as well as the evaluating methods, usually based on ISO standards, need to be reviewed. It is well known that the standards usually applied to quality evaluation do not reflect the performance of metallic burden inside the reactors. This paper describes the different methods of evaluating the disintegration under reduction of DR pellets based on ISO 11257 standard. This is the most important method used by pellet producers and customers for evaluating DR feedstocks. The different methodologies tested to evaluate the disintegration under reduction had varying results, evidencing the relevance of the method and the quality of the pellet. Nevertheless, validating the method in an industrial reactor is still fundamental.

The methyl substituted binuclear cyclometallated gold(I) complexes [Au2(?-n-MeC6H3PPh2)2] [n = 4, 5 and 6] all undergo oxidative addition reactions with halogens and, in the case of the 4- and 5-methyl substituted analogues, with dibenzoyl peroxide to give metal-metal bonded digold(II) complexes [Au2X2(?-C6H3-n-MePPh2)2]. The 4- and 5-methyl substituted digold(II) compounds on warming or exposure to light undergo carbon-carbon coupling reactions to give gold(I) complexes containing the corresponding 2,2'-n,n'-biphenylyldiphenylphosphines. The 6- methyl substituted digold(II) complexes rapidly isomerise above ca. -20° C to binuclear heterovalent gold(I)/gold(III) compounds [XAu(?-2-Ph2PC6H3-6-Me)AuX{?2-(6-MeC6H3-2-PPh2)}], containing a fourmembered cyclometallated ring on a gold(III) centre. Surprisingly, no carbon-carbon coupling could be induced for any of the 6-methyl substituted compounds, even under forcing conditions. This difference in reactivity of the 6- methyl derivative, compared to that of the 5-methyl and unsubstituted analogues was studied by ab initio calculations using a series of model compounds. The results are in excellent agreement with the experimental findings and suggest that the key-step in the C-C coupling reaction is the partial opening of the Au(III)-P bond in one of the transition states. In the 6-methyl system this transition state is energetically inaccessible and hence no C-C coupling occurs.

Earlier research has indicated that an addition of titanium master alloy to aluminum alloys, results in improved fillability, grain refinement and finer pores. B206 alloy differs from other alloys used in automotive industry, with lower titanium level. This paper examines the effect of alloy chemistry (copper and titanium levels) and grain refinement (A1-5`)oTi- 1%B grain refiner) on grain size, microstructure and microporosity in B206 aluminum alloy. In this study, characterization of grain size, microstructure and microporosity was carried out using light optical microscopy (LOM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Results have shown that the addition of 0.05 wt % titanium resulted in grain refinement of B206 alloy. With an increase in titanium to 0.25 wt further grain refinement, much reduced pore size and uniform distribution of pores resulted. These results suggest that B206 with proper addition of titanium has a promise as an alloy for automotive casting.

THE KIDD CREEK MINE is located within the Abitibi greenstone belt, near its west end, in an area known as the Porcupine mining camp (Fig. 5). The Abitibi belt, long known for its many major gold and base metal deposits, is the largest Archean (early Precambrian) greenstone belt within the Canadian Shield. In the Porcupine area, the greenstone belt is composed principally of Keewatin (older Archean) basic to intermediate volcanics, with subordinate felsic volcanics developed• locally. Greywacke, mainly of volcanic derivation, occurs associated with and overlying these volcanics. Timiskaming (younger Archean) sediments, principally coarse clastics, unconformably overlie the Keewatin volcanics and sediments. The mineral wealth of pre-Cambrian rocks in Canada has been the subject of much study by geologists and engineers (members of this Institute), particularly so in the past few years, following discoveries of mineral deposits in areas far a part. This interest is well worth sustaining knowing the numerous rich producing mines within the pre-Cambrian formations, and the vast area covered by its rocks throughout this country. The pre-Cambrian has yielded minerals, both metallic and non-metallic; of these a much diversified list could be made. In more than one district we can point to mining as being responsible for the opening up of new sections, attracting a population into regions which otherwise would have remained virgin land of little commercial value. In these pre-Cambrian formations are found the rich copper deposits of Michigan, producing without interruption since 1845, and from which seven billion pounds of copper has been won; while in Minnesota and the adjoining district, at the head of Lake Superior, are mined iron ores which have rendered possible the great steel manufacturing industry of United States, the base of the economic structure of that wealthy country. The pre-Cambrian has given Canada the nickel-copper mines of the Sudbury district, the silver deposits of Cobalt and the gold camps of Porcupine and Kirkland Lake. With all of these our members are familiar; and it suffices to mention them to bring to mind pictures of the wealth and 'the growing population, in a word the importance of mining in?those sections of the country.
