Efficient and effective management of mine tailings is essential for continued successful development of Alberta?s vast oil sands resources. Syncrude Canada Ltd. continues to research novel tailings management techniques in an effort to improve production efficiency and environmental sustainability. During the summer months of 2001, Syncrude Canada Ltd., in collaboration with members of the Canadian Oil Sands Network for Research and Development (CONRAD), conducted field-scale trials of thickened tailings technology at Syncrude?s Aurora mine, north of Fort McMurray, Alberta. This paper provides an overview of the test program including discussion of objectives, test configuration, and program observations. 0Data collected during the field trial indicate that substantial swings in feed slurry composition challenge effective thickener operation. When coarse mineral solids dominated slurry composition, thickener rake torque rose to unmanageable levels. It was determined that the end-of-pipe depositional characteristics of thickened oil sands slurry were generally consistent with present understanding of oil sands tailings slurries. After shear, thickener underflow product exhibited very shallow beach angles and a limited capacity to keep coarser particles in suspension indicating that stacking of ?paste-like? thickener underflow product from a conventional thickener is not practical in an oil sands setting unless process adjustments can be made to increase the underflow density and/or preserve the initial high yield stress of the underflow during transport and deposition. These technical challenges notwithstanding, Thickened Tailings technology offers considerable promise for recovery of warm water from oil sands process tailings.

MOST mines have a model of some kind to illustrate either geological structure, mining operation, or some special condition or feature of the property. The type used depends on the particular feature or use for which it is intended. At Dome Mines we have developed an interesting and practical application of the horizontal-type model. This model shows the workings of each level horizon plotted on glass. These glass panes are set in frames which, in turn, rest on drawers equipped with rollers which can be pulled out as desired into a light chamber. The features of this model are its rigid steel construction and that any desired number of level plans can be pulled out, eliminating any other interference from other levels. Figures 1 and 2 are photographs of the model cabinet and show its construction and general features. The cabinet is of steel construction with the following overall dimensions: width, 6 ft. 5 in.; depth, 6 ft. 7 in.; height, 5 ft. 2 in. When not in use it can be completely closed-in, making the cabinet practically dustproof. There are 30 drawers, one for each of the 29 levels and one for the surface. The glass in each drawer is divided into two panes, 36 in. by 36 in., of flatdrawn double-diamond 'lustraglass' with about l/32 in. between adjacent edges. The panes are held rigidly in the frames, which are lined with felt strips, and may be adjusted by set screws, four of which on each drawer are shown in Figures 1 and 2. The level workings, on a scale of 1 inch equals 100 feet, are traced in ivory black Windsor & Newtons artist oil paint. Co-ordinate lines are shown in crimson lake, and main geological contacts are shown in their respective colours. Figure 3 is a photograph looking down on one of the levels. The lighting consists of 14 30-watt fluorescent bulbs, with reflectors, under frosted glass. These lamps are much more satisfactory when operated by 60-cycle rather than 25-cycle and, as we had available nearby a source of direct current, this was used. The electrical unit consists of a rotary converter from d.c. to 60-cycle. This arrangement gives perfect lighting, allowing most colours to be easily distinguished. "Nickel and cobalt are the main value metals in nickel laterite ore. Cyanex 272 is an extractant used to separate nickel from cobalt present in leach solutions. Previous studies demonstrated the extraction of cobalt, magnesium and manganese at pH 5 using Cyanex 272 as extractant, while nickel remained in aqueous solution. However, it is difficult to separate cobalt from a solution containing magnesium and manganese. One possibility to change the metals’ behavior during the solvent extraction process is to change the mixture of extractants used. In order to study the solvent extraction of cobalt from a solution containing manganese, magnesium and nickel, a mixture of two extractants was investigated. Cyanex 272 (CY) and Versatic 10 (VC) were selected as extractants in the organic phase. The extractant concentrations used were: 20% CY; 15% CY, 5% VC; 10% CY, 10% VC; 5% CY, 15% VC; and 20% VC. In all cases, kerosene was used as a diluent, at 80 vol%. The synthetic leach solution used in this study was prepared according to the composition of a typical nickel laterite leach solution. The pH value of the solution used was 5, and the aqueous/organic ratio used in solvent extraction testwork was 1/1. The study has shown that the composition of the organic extractant mixture did not increase cobalt separation.INTRODUCTION Sulfide and laterite deposits are the main sources of nickel. However, production from nickel sulfide ores has been decreasing over the years, relatively speaking, increasing the focus on the exploitation of laterite nickel ores (McDonald & Whittington, 2008). Laterite ore deposits are found in tropical and subtropical regions. A characteristic of laterite ores is the presence of a complex and heterogeneous mixture of metals (Crundwell, Moats, Ramachandran, Robinson, & Davenport, 2011; Georgiou & Papangelakis, 1998; Gupta, 2003; Kesler & Simon, 2015; Moskalyk & Alfantazi, 2002; Oliveira, 1990). Nickel concentrations in laterite ores are typically 1–2% (Dalvi, Bacon, & Osborne, 2004)."

"The Great Dyke extends for 540 krn along strike, to unknown depth, and varies in width from 3 krn to 11 krn. Rb/Sr age determinations gives values of approximately 2470 Ma.The Dyke consists of a variety of mafic and ultramafic rocks, many altered to serpentinites. These include, from top to bottom, successions of gabbro/norites, pyroxenites, peridotiteslharzburgites, and dunites/picrites.The layers dip in from either margin, steepest at the edges (20°) and flattening toward the central sections. Four separate complexes are present. From north to south these are termed the Musengezi, Hartley, Selukwe and Wedza Complexes, and are described as 'boat-shaped' or 'pig-troughed'. All are similar in petrological sequences. Physiographically, the Dyke is spectacular in the north, where as a mountain range it meets the Zarnbezi Escarpment. Elsewhere in the central parts there is little surface expression and wide open treeless vleis. Dyke rocks cut through granite and schist belt terrain and are termed 'The Magnesia Belt'.Vast mineral resources exist. These include chrome, asbestos, platinoids, nickel, copper and gold. Up to eleven chrome seams numbered from top to bottom occur in the lower ultramafic sequences. Seams are narrow at 10 em to 30 em but of high grade. The platinum occurs 10 m to 40 m below the norite/pyroxenite contact.A 60 m wide zone of Light Sulfide Mineralization (LSM) of less than 1070 sulfides extends from the lower gabbronorites into the upper pyroxenites. In this LSM, four enriched zones carry up to 5% sulfides. The most widespread is termed the Main Sulfide Zone (MSZ), below which is No. 2, No.3 and No.4 Sulfide Zones. The MSZ carrying pyrite, pyrrhotite and chalcopyrite is a multielement ore with components of PGE (pt-Pd-Rh), nickel, copper and cobalt, and gold and silver.Extensive exploration programs have been carried out and the intention is to begin large-scale mining. However, with Russia supplying metals to the western markets, South Africa's cutback on production, and an end to the Cold War, delays have arisen."

In 1970, the Government of Saskatchewan instituted a program aimed at resolving the dilemma of excess productive capacity over the market demand which existed for potash produced in Saskatchewan. The two primary elements of the program were prorationing of potash production to market demand and a minimum selling price. The paper reviews the factors, both local and international in nature that led to the introduction of the program. The licensing mechanics and the operation of the program, along with the changes that have been introduced in two and one-half years of operation, are discussed. Attention is given to the results of the controls as they affect the industry and the province. Also discussed is the outlook for Saskatchewan potash in world markets.

"IntroductionThe Kitsault molybdenum mine is located 600 m above sea level on Lime Creek at the head of the inlet of Alice Arm, 140 km northeast of Prince Rupert, British Columbia (Fig. 1). The area of the mine is characterized by rugged topography and deeply incised creeks which drain into the Portland Canal - Observatory Inlet fjord system. Access is by air service or boat from Prince Rupert, or by secondary road from Terrace.HistoryThe deposit was first staked in 1911, at which time the main feature of interest was a polymetallic vein with values in silver located southeast of the molybdenum deposit (Woodcock and Carter, 1976). Turnbull (1916) was the first to describe the extensive zone of crisscross quartz stringers with Mo~ on the banks of Lime Creek which, although it clearly had the potential to contain a major deposit, was not then believed to be of commercial value.Following sporadic work through the 1920s and early 1930s, the ground lay idle unti11959 when Kennco Explorations (Western) Ltd. commenced a program of systematic diamond drilling on the stockwork-type mineralization adjacent to Lime Creek. In late 1964, Kennco announced the presence of an orebody of 36 million tonnes averaging 0.230Jo Mo~ which was to be put into production at a rate of 5450 tonnes per day under a new subsidiary, British Columbia Molybdenum Ltd., at a forecasted capital cost of $20 million (revised to $30 million).Between January 1968 and April 1972, 10.4 million kg of molybdenum were produced from 9.3 million tonnes of ore, at an average mill recovery of 90%, and with an average mill head grade of 0.206% Mo~. The ore was mined in an open pit with a waste to ore stip ratio of 1.5 to 1. The. operation was terminated in 1972 due to weak molybdenum prices and escalating costs.In May 1973, the deposit was purchased by Climax Molybdenum Corporation of British Columbia, Limited and in 1979 transferred to affiliate Amax of Canada Limited. In early 1979, following completion of detailed feasibility studies, Arnax commenced construction of the 10 900 tonne per day Kitsault mine and mill complex based on a mineable open pit reserve of 95 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.192% Mo~, sufficient for a mine life of 25 years. The original capital cost estimate was $143 million; it subsequently escalated to approximately $200 million."

"Since the advent of large volume flotation machines, Cominco Ltd. has actively studied possible application of such machines to their various milling operations. A number of installations have been made and more are on the drawing board. This paper gives a description of these units, information as to choice of equipment, and information as to operating experience. Mechanical and operating details of six installations are summarized. Three different types of machines are discussed.Pine PointThe original Pine Point zinc flotation circuit comprised conventional roughing with two stages of cleaning. Over the years with increase in feed tonnage there have developed two adverse conditions; namely, a reduction in zinc concentrate grade coupled with an increase in MgO in the concentrate. This resulted in higher freight payments along with more severe smelter penalties. An intensive test program, in 1971, showed that the concentrate grade could be raised by 1.5 units of zinc along with a reduction in MgO from 0.8% to 0.47.. Subsequently this was done by adding two additional stages of cleaning using 16 cells of Denver 200-V's. The project was completed in January 1973 at a cost of $510,000 to give an estimated annual savings of about $390,000.Selection of the Denver Model 200-V was based on minimum floor space requirement, availability, and favourable operational and maintenance experience with Denver 100’s. As it happens it was possible to ""shoe-horn"" the 16 cells into place with a minimum of plant alteration. Some problems have been encountered with a tendency to ""sand up"" at high pH, particularly at the corners. Otherwise operational service has been very good."

CSIRO Minerals, in association with the AJ Parker CRC for Hydrometallurgy, has an active program of hydrometallurgical research in which physical and computational modelling are used to better understand and improve a range of different unit operations. The modelling is based on flow simulation (Computational Fluid Dynamics or CFD), but incorporates other physical and chemical phenomena of importance, such as droplet break-up and coalescence, species transport and reaction. This paper reviews some of the major projects that have been undertaken at CSIRO Minerals and will illustrate the critical importance of hydrodynamics to the performance of unit operations and the improvements that can be made to performance using such modelling techniques. Unit operations that are discussed include solvent-extraction, gravity thickeners, flotation cells, bio-heap leaching and stirred tanks.

"Absolute magnetite contents were determined for asbestos specimens in various stages of milling by using a Faraday-type thermomagnetic balance. Comparison of these results with magnetic ratings (MR) supplied by the mining companies cooperating in this study reveals strong scatter. The main cause of this scatter is thought to be that the MR values were obtained in magnetic fields well below the saturating field of magnetite (5,000 oe). However, only the saturation moment is an intrinsic property and consequently must be used for the purpose of obtaining reliable estimates of the magnetite content. Curie points indicate that virtually pure magnetite and possibly Ni3Fe is present in all samples, and another phase, probably (Cr, Al) magnetite, is present in a few samples. The susceptibility in fields stronger than 5,000 oe is positive and falls in the normal paramagnetic range, whereas sy nthetic chrysotile exhibits weak diamagnetism. This suggests that, as a general rule, the least adulterated natural chrysotile concurs with the samples showing the smallest positive susceptibility above 5,000 oe. The magnetite appears to increase in quantity with a decrease in fibre length and to be somewhat more uniform in distribution for samples showing substantial fiberization (opening of the fibres)."

CONSIDERABLE interest has always been taken in Safety-First and First Aid at the Sullivan mine. Even during the early days of development, Safety-First committees periodically held meetings, while lectures in first aid were given to any employees interested in the work. In 1929, a Safety Department was organized, and all accident-prevention and first-aid work was put in charge of a full-time Safety Engineer. An extensive programme has gradually been developed, the value of which can best be indicated by the reduction of the accident rate from 18.4 shifts lost per 1,000 shifts worked for non-fatal accidents and two fatalities for 1927, to 3.24 shifts lost per 1,000 shifts worked and no fatalities for 1936. SUPERVISION All work connected with accident prevention or first aid is under the jurisdiction of a central committee, known as the Accident Prevention Committee, which meets regularly once a month. It consists of all superintendents, department heads, foremen, and shift bosses, and is presided over by the Safety Engineer. At these meetings, the accident records of the previous month are reviewed and all accidents carefully analyzed and discussed. All proposed changes in the safety rules or in the accident tprevention programme are taken up and passed upon. Complaints or suggestions from the Safety-First Committee and the Employees Co-operative Committee, dealing with safety, are discussed and passed upon or a subcommittee is appointed to investigate and take any action found advisable. The question of underground ventilation and dust control, which recently has become a very important problem, always receives considerable attention.

"The current American ""energy crisis"", occurring in the midst of a global debate on the adequacy of mineral supplies to support present and projected levels of world consumption, has focused attention on Canada as a major world producer of minerals. Exports of minerals account for approximately one-third of Canadian foreign earnings; more than half of these exports are to the United States. Although the United States is a net importer of most industrially important metals, with the exception of nickel and zinc, only a small part of American mineral imports are from Canada; these imports are minerals for which geographical proximity and strategic considerations are important. In the short-term, Canada is more dependent on her exports to the U.S. than America is on imports from Canada. It is argued that Canada, far from indulging in economic nationalism to preserve her resources, should expand her exports while the markets are available."

Wellington lies in a seismically active area 150 km from a subduction zone and in the vicinity of several active faults, which poses a risk to its infrastructure and inhabitants. One of these major faults, the Wellington Fault, runs through the centre of the city and across several lifelines, including the natural gas pipeline and the freshwater pipeline. The first settlement in the area was severely damaged in 1848, soon after its establishment, by an earthquake of approximate magnitude Mw 7.4 - 7.5 (Grapes, Little, & Downes, 1998). In 1855, another earthquake of magnitude Mw 8.2 generated by a nearby fault uplifted the eastern part of the current Wellington area and caused several landslides in the surrounding hills (Grapes & Downes, 1997). The Central Business District lies in the area of a sedimentary basin and partly on reclaimed land. Many residential areas, as well as some vital infrastructure, however, lie on or along the slopes in the surrounding hills. The bedrock in the area comprises predominantly the Torlesse greywacke of Permian – Late Triassic age. The greywacke is tilted to a steep angle, intensively faulted and fractured (Cook, 2001). Even though several studies in the past assessed the seismic risk in the area (e.g. Brabhaharan, Hancox, Perrin, & Dellow, 1994), the studies either focussed solely on the area of the sedimentary basin or based their assessment of the hilly terrain purely on slope morphology (slope angle). Previous studies have shown that slope shape and contrasting materials in the slope can amplify earthquake ground motions, such factors are typically called site effects (e.g. Geli, Bard, & Jullien, 1988). Any attempt to systematically quantify the site effects and consequent seismic response of the slopes and use it to predict the consequences of the next large-magnitude earthquake, has not yet been carried out. In this extended abstract we outline the methodology of a PhD research project, focussed on investigating the site effects on the slopes around Wellington and on creating representative numerical models of ‘characteristic’ Wellington slopes and materials. This extended abstract presents the methodology adopted for the assessment using the Te Ahumairangi Hill site as an example.

Over the last 10 years, Computer Aided Design, Finite Elements Analysis and field testing of prototypes have enabled the cycling industry to grow and to significantly improve its products. However, today&apos;s cyclists have become more and more demanding, making these classical design approaches almost obsolete. Devinci understood that problem four years ago and fully revisited its design approach; to offer bicycle frames better suited to real life riding, one must fully know those real life conditions. In partnership with the University de Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, Devinci then developed a bicycle enabling them to measure the actual load applied on a bicycle frame in real-time for real riding conditions: the instrumented bike. Today, Devinci uses its instrumented road and mountain bikes, combined with virtual prototyping and laboratory testing capabilities to develop better bicycles, faster.

"The pressure leaching of alkali-pretreated limonitic laterite ore in nitric acid was studied. The optimal leaching conditions are as follows: leaching temperature of 458 K, initial nitric acid of 2.44 mol/L, leaching time of 60 min, liquid to solid ratio of 2:1 mL/g, agitation speed of 500 RPM. Under the above conditions, the extraction of nickel and cobalt can be achieved as approximate 95% and 80% respectively while that of iron is as lower as 1%. The leaching residue containing 70% of iron in the form of hematite and trace amount of chromium is suitable as the raw material for iron-making. The nitric acid in the leaching solution can be regenerated and further recycled to leach. INTRODUCTIONIt has been estimated that 60%-70% of the world land-based nickel resources presented in nickel laterites containing 130 million tons of nickel although these only accounted for about 42% of the world nickel production (Sudol, 2005; Luo et al., 2010). The nickel resource of laterite has not yet been fully utilized. Due to the increasing global demand of nickel and the declining global reserves of nickel sulphides, there is an increasing focus on the processing of the huge reserves of laterite ores today. Nickel laterite ores can be simply divided into two types, namely, silicate-rich and limonite. The former can be treated effectively by pyrometallurgical process in which the ferronickel product or nickel/iron sulphide matte is produced (Monhemius, 1987). The limonitic laterite is rich in iron in the form of goethite which is the main nickel-bearing mineral and usually contains cobalt associated with a manganese phase (Chang et al., 2010; Georgiou and Papangelakis, 2004). The limonitic laterite is usually processed by hydrometallurgical methods, such as atmosphere acid leaching (AL) (Xu et al., 2005; McDonald and Whittington, 2008), high pressure acid leaching (HPAL) (Chou et al., 1977; Georgiou and Papangelakis, 1998; Rubisov et al., 2000; Whittington and Muir, 2000) and reductive roasting-ammonia leaching (Caron Process) (Whittington and Muir, 2000; Valix and Cheung, 2002). The AL process can proceed at lower temperature, thus the operation costs may be very low. But two biggest problems associate with the AL process, namely, the slow rates of nickel extraction and potentially the significant amount of impurities such as iron and aluminum in the leaching solutions, which hampers the wide application of the AL process. The Caron Process uses the pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods together to obtain the metallic values, but the overall metal recovery is relatively low, especially for cobalt. In recent years, the environment-friendly process of HPAL has become increasingly important because it is most suitable for low-grade ores and leads to high extraction of the valuables. However, the HPAL process needs a much higher temperature and pressure (503-533 K, 4-5 MPa) to maintain a relatively fast leaching rates, which results in higher operation costs. Moreover, another serious problem of scale formation in autoclaves occurs in the HPAL process, for example, in Moa Bay, up to 20 cm scale may build up resulting in 5 days descale downtime per month. In addition, the iron residues cannot be utilized for ironmaking due to the presence of high content chromium (Ema and Harada, 1987; Owada and Harada, 1987; Takagi and Furui, 1987)."

"There has been a number of new developments in British Columbia&apos;s industrial minerals field over the past few years. Several new industrial operations were started to diversify the line of British Columbia mineral production by magnesite, perlite and fuller&apos;s earth. Industry activities and geological projects have identified occurrences of rare earth minerals, niobium, kaoline, fireclay and zeolites. The Geological Survey Branch significantly improved its database on industrial minerals. New geological concepts based on recent work are opening a number of new opportunities f or further industrial minerals&apos; exploration and development in British Columbia.IntroductionTraditionally, the value of industrial minerals produced in British Columbia in any given year comprises between 100/0and 15% of the combined value of minerals, coal, petroleum and natural gas. Over the years a wide variety of industrial minerals has been produced , often with different levels of marketings success. For some products, such as dimension stone and clay or shale products, initial strong demand gradually dissipated; for others such as asbestos and magnesite, new discoveries or new industrial activities created demand and new markets . In some cases, such as fluorite , talc, pyrophyllite and perlite, wider use has been prevented by small size, poor quality or remote location of the deposits. Also, British Columbia , with 2.6 million inhabitant s, provides only a limited market and the industry therefore has to look beyond provincial borders."

Growing awareness of selenium bioaccumulation has resulted in selenium management becoming an important environmental issue for mining operations. Selen-IX™ is a novel ion exchange based technology developed by BioteQ to provide an effective solution for removing selenium oxyanions from mine impacted water to single-digit µg/L levels. The technology offers significant potential benefits when compared to incumbent biological treatment processes, including substantially reduced capital and operating costs and significantly reduced production of a selenium-containing sludge for final disposal. This paper reviews the key features of the Selen-IX™ process and presents the results of recent pilot testing on selenium impacted water.

"Sensor based ore sorting is being rapidly adopted by the mining industry. The ability to boost mill feed grade by rejecting waste grade rocks early in the process has proven revolutionary for some operations.This paper briefly reviews the current position of ore sorting in the industry, as well as abridged results from specific operations such as Barrick, McEwen, New Gold, and two others. The paper also introduces the concept of “Profit Recovery™”, the measuring of recovery based on rock profitability rather than just metal content.IntroductionSensor based ore sorting is being rapidly adopted by the mining industry. The ability to increase mill feed grade by rejecting waste grade rocks early in the processing stage is proving to be revolutionary for some operations. These potential outcomes have been too invaluable to be overlooked by both producing operations and prospective projects, thus leading to a wide range of studies on ore sorting. In addition, the advent of ore sorting has also called for a new standard of recovery analysis. The answer to this is the creation of a new term and concept - Profit Recovery™.This paper evaluates the most recent results of ore sorting in the mining industry, and presents the results from five different mining operations. Additionally, this paper will discuss and evaluate the Profit Recovery™ of each of these operations. The goal of this paper is to address common concerns regarding ore sorting rejects and their actual impact on project economics.State Of The ArtOre Sorting is a sensor-based sorting and pre-concentration technology implemented before the processing stage that is used to reduce the amount of waste reporting to the mill feed. This technology can also be utilized to recover ore from previously uneconomic waste, as well as reduce the mill energy and reagent consumption (Tong, 2012). In greenfield projects, sensor-based sorting can further provide value by reducing processing capital costs. The decline of available high grade orebodies and decreasing head grades has further increased the attractiveness of pre-concentration, and subsequently ore sorting (Lessard et al., 2014).There are currently two notable types of sensor-based sorting: bulk and rock-by-rock. Bulk sorting consists of live, high tonnage sorting that can be installed on a scoop or on a conveyor belt with a diverter. Rock-by-rock is a selective sorting method that scans and sorts individual rocks on a conveyor belt, and rejects rocks using air jets or mechanical levers.
