"After six years of successful excavation with a support pattern, some roof failures have happened in a room-and-pillar underground mine excavated in a stratified rock mass. In this paper the authors give explanation to the failure mechanisms and redesign the support in order to solve the recent problems of roof collapse.The mine magnesite bed is approximately 14 m thick, and runs in the E-W direction with an average dip of 18º. Due to mine constraints and the inexpensiveness of the ore, the excavation is performed in the mineral itself, avoiding the need for mining dumps and waste excavation. Rooms and drifts are oriented in the mineral bed to form an angle of 19º to the direction of the strata, reducing the roadway gradients to less than 10%. Rooms are 11 m wide and pillars are 7 m wide. They are designed to leave a 1 meter thick magnesite bed in the roof of the rooms to act as a supporting beam. More often than not there is a layer of very poor quality marly shale up to 1 m thick resting on this magnesite beam. Overlying the poor quality marly shale there is a better quality, self-supporting sandy shale.First, a characterization of the involved rock masses (magnesite, marly shale and sandy shale) is performed, collecting the geotechnical data from previous studies and performing new in situ geotechnical surveys to check the soundness of the previous data. A distinction is made between different quality zones inside the mine by means of the RMR classification, associated to the occurrence of faults.Back-analysis of some of the failed rooms and data from exploration boreholes were used to determine the failure mechanisms (associated to Voussoir type failure or occurrence of sub-horizontal joints crossing the magnesite beam). Based on an understanding of these mechanisms, the method used to design the support and to analyse the stability of the different possible thicknesses of the magnesite beams of the rooms and drifts of the mine were improved.Numerical models of the most relevant conditions found in the mine were performed in order to better understand the behaviour of the roofs and to simulate the supporting solution obtained in the previous analyses.The most relevant conclusions with regard to the main elements causing the instability of the roof include the appearance of sub-horizontal discontinuities crossing the magnesite bed, which causes total instability of the roof and usually leads to collapse; excessive thinness of the magnesite beam in the problematic rooms; and the relaxation of the deepest (around 270 m in depth) zone of the mine because of existing faults."

It is the purpose of this paper to point out conditions as they exist in the merchandizing of coal, to compare these conditions with methods in use by competitive producers of coal substitutes, and to present briefly some suggestions which may help the individual operator to market more coal in the immediate future, while we are waiting for the scientist and research worker, who are now busy on coal betterment , to produce in a practical way the results which they now write about in such glowing terms. While it may be unnecessary to call the attention of coal operators to the present deplorable condition of the industry, it might be well to impress upon our members in other branches of mining, as well as upon the public at large, the seriousness of the situation. Emerging from the war and the period of reconstruction that followed, the coal industry found itself with too many mines and too many men for normal conditions. To make matters worse, the interruptions in deliveries caused by strikes, the unfavourable publicity caused by socialistic propaganda, and the repeated governmental investigations, made the market a fertile field for coal substitutes which were not so handicapped. These substitutes were well advertised, and were marketed in an up-to-date manner, furnishing an example from which the coal operator could well profit. Now, whether or not there is agreement as to the cause or causes of this condition, there can be no doubt that we are today face to face with the fact that the sale of coal has not kept pace with the sale and use of other commodities. Had it done so, we would ere this have been able to take care of the surplus labour and work our mines at least approximately full time.

"INTRODUCTIONThe Inca process for continuous cyanide removal from industrial wastewaters was patented in 1984 by G.J. Borbely, et.al. (1). The process requires SO2, air, lime and a copper catalyst. Both free and complexed cyanide are oxidized to cyanate in the pH range 8 to 10. Cyanide bound to iron is removed by precipitation as a ferrocyanide insoluble salt and other base metals are removed as hydroxides.The process was piloted in 1982 on barren bleed solution at Campbell Red Lake Mines Ltd., Ontario (2). Since 1982, the Inca SO2-air cyanide removal technology has been applied in twelve commercial installations. The process has significant advantages over other commercial processes in the completeness of cyanide removal and lower reagent requirements and costs.COMMERCIAL INSTALLATIONSBy the end of 1988 Inca will have applied its patented cyanide removal technology to twelve commercial operations. Three of these, namely Scottie Gold Mines, Dupont of Canada Expl. Baker mill and Carolin, all in British Columbia, Canada, have ceased cyanidation operations but SO2-air cyanide destruction results were good for all mills, particularly so for over two years for the Scottie mill.Removal of cyanide from CIL slurry tailings is applied at Equity Silver (9,500 tpd) and Inca's new 1,200 tpd mill at Inca/Golden Knight. Detoxification of CIP tailings is carried out by Colosseum California (3,600 tpd) and Canamax's Ketza River operation (360 tpd). Repulped tailings from Merril-Crowe flowsheets are treated at Total Erickson's Mount Skukum mill (300 tpd) and Skyline's Johnny Mountain mill (200 tpd) and barren bleed at Inco/Queenston's McBean mill (500 tpd). Lynngold's MacLellan mill (1,800 tpd) treats pond supernatant water. Plating shop cyanide effluents are decyanized at Kuntz Electroplating in Kitchener, Ontario. Many of the above commercial operations were described in some detail in previous publications (3,4). Typical installations are described in this paper. A summary of operating results is given in Table 1."

"Over-all recovery of cadmium has been increased at the plants of the Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co., Limited, since the construction of a slag fuming plant and baghouse where smelter flue dust is recovered. This pa-per outlines the distribution of the cadmium in plant products from the concentrator to the refining department.The leaching of cadmium-bearing precipitates from the zinc plant is also discussed. This consists of a two-stage leach; first with sulphuric acid and then with copper sulphate. Details of the leaches are outlined along with the safety measures practised in handling the hydrogen and arsine evolved.The paper describes the final preparation of electrolyte for the refining cells by purification for copper and thallium. Deposition of cadmium, using a polyacrylamide as an addition agent, is discussed.An outline is given of the melting procedures, under either sodium hydroxide or zinc chloride, and of the sub-sequent treatment of the dross to recover entrained cadmium and thallium."

"In 1969, the Environmental Science Division of James F. MacLaren Limited received authorization from The International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited to carry out a water quality monitoring program in the Lake Shebandowan region of Ontario, where a new base metal mining and milling complex was expected to go into operation in 1972. The objective of the program is to establish base-line water quality characteristics. Fully realizing their corporate responsibility to minimize the effects of the proposed activities on the environment, Inco decided that it would be desirable to establish a program by which any change in the quality of environmental waters will be detected before detrimental conditions ensue, permitting prompt corrective measures to be taken. The program has been in progress for over two years. The waters are sampled and analyzed four to six times per year. Sampling stations are located in Lake Shebandowan and on the adjacent Gold Creek - Matawin River system. On-site analyses and measurements are made of flow, dissolved oxygen, temperature and pH. Samples also are collected for later analysis in the laboratory. These samples are analyzed for a wide range of chemical and biological characteristics. The paper discusses the extent of the sampling program, the techniques utilized and the value of such programs in maintaining the quality of the environment."

"The results of tests carried out on a 3-in. hydrocyclone have shown the linear relationships that exist between: (1) the flow-rate of water in the feed to and the overflow product from the cyclone; (2) the flow-rate of solids in the feed to and the underflow product from the cyclone. The underflow size distribution of an operation has been found to be linear and its usefulness in evaluating particle distribution in the cyclone has been discussed. Effects of design and operating variables on the above relationships have been discussed. The performance of this 3-in. hydrocyclone has been compared with that of a 20-in. cyclone, the results for which are available in the literature."

"Today the common recycling technologies of automotive catalysts are either energy intensive pyrometallurgical processes generating huge amounts of residues or hydrometallurgical ones which have to cope with effluent problems. Next to that, other valuable metals beside PGMs such as rare earths from the wash coat are not recovered.Therefore, the present paper introduces a hydrometallurgical concept developed in cooperation with the company Railly & Hill for the recovery of the PGMs as well as cerium from the wash coat of the catalysts in a closed loop. Next to the process concept, the required parameters for the different steps are discussed, including the chemical reactions, leaching efficiencies and mass flows, which form the basis for an economic estimation of the concept.Contrary to the pyrometallurgical recycling where the monolith is completely melted down to slag which is typically dumped, in this process the remaining monolith forms an utilizable product for the ceramics/refractory industry. As a result of the closed loop of the leaching media an environmentally friendly process was developed from which nearly no new residues or effluents are generated, with a sustainable usage of chemicals."

"In March 1988, old Denver flotation cells were removed from Dickenson's Arthur w. White Mill, and a new flotation circuit, consisting of four Prochem rougher cells and a Hydrochem agitated cleaner column, was commissioned. The refractory portion of the gold in the ore is associated with arsenopyrite, therefore the flotation circuit is set up to produce a saleable sulphide concentrate. Tailings from the leach circuit are conditioned prior to being pumped as feed to the flotation circuit. The prototype Hydrochem agitated column has been in operation as a single cleaner stage for rougher concentrate. The effect of flotation circuit changes on gold recovery data, as well as cleaner concentrate production, and development work to achieve the target results, have been investigated. Flowsheet modifications and the resulting circuit performance data, along with test results to date, will be presented.INTRODUCTIONThe mill is capable of treating 1000 stpd of ore averaging approximately 0.30 oz/ton Au. The ore is crushed and ground to 75% - 200 mesh. Gravity concentration, cyanidation, and Merrill - Crowe precipitation yields 84% gold recovery. Detailed descriptions of the comminution, gravity separation, and leaching circuits, as well as background information have been presented elsewhere (Suttill, Van Weert et al). The target cleaner concentrate grade is 1.0 oz/ton Au for custom smelting and refining. Historical gold recovery values of the old circuit was approximately 20% of the gold present in the float feed at the target grade. The recovery value objective set for the new circuit during the planning stages was 50% of the gold present in the flotation feed at 1.0 oz/ton Au in cleaner concentrate."

"The focus of this paper is on the analysis of geometrical discontinuity properties for the rock mass located within an open pit mine located in Western Africa. Discontinuity data were collected using various techniques including oriented core logging, borehole televiewer surveys, surface pit wall mapping and photogrammetry. The geological setting was initially studied prior to the data analysis to produce threedimensional ground models of the regional and mine site geology along with block diagrams illustrating predicted fracture patterns. Stereographic and statistical discontinuity data analysis of the geometrical properties of the rock mass was subsequently performed to identify unique structural domains throughout the open pit area. The discontinuity data collected throughout the studied open pit area were primarily discontinuity orientation, frequency and spacing and the investigation focused on the reasons for observed differences between the various data collection techniques. Stereographic analysis was used to assess the preferred geometry of discontinuities filtered by lithology, data collection technique, borehole, discontinuity type and pit wall (footwall or hanging wall). The observed fracture pattern is explained adequately by the geological setting. The need for accurate ground models for the design of open pit slopes is highlighted.INTRODUCTIONThe Tasiast Mine is an open pit operation located in north-western Mauritania, approximately 300 kilometres north of the capital Nouakchott. The Tasiast mine, which is owned and operated by Kinross Gold Corporation (Kinross), began commercial operations in 2008. The Tasiast mine is located in an area characterized by flat desert terrain within the western reaches of the Sahara Desert region. The current mine site includes mill buildings, shop facilities, waste dumps, tailings facilities and two main open pit operations (Piment and West Branch). The West Branch pit is the focus of this paper. The current open pit plan for West Branch indicates a final pit measuring approximately 2.5 km long by 1.4 km wide and 510 m deep."

Particle shape characterisation has an important role to play in mineral processing, to clarify effects of shape on rheology, equipment wear rates, comminution, classification, sizing and flotation. However in industry, shape characterisation is not routine, and the most commonly used shape descriptor in the field (circularity/ angularity/ sphericity) is not invariant. This study aims to investigate shape measurements for a fine particulate ore sample measured with different analytical devices. Two Automated Scanning Electron Microscopy devices with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (FEI QEMSCAN® and Zeiss Mineralogic®), and a camera based image-sizer using dynamic image analysis (Retsch CAMSIZER® XT) were compared. Each device was used to analyse the shape characteristics of specific particles in both a coarse sample (–212/+150 µm) and a fine sample (-53 µm) of UG2 platinum ore. Circularity and Roundness frequency distributions obtained from the three devices were then compared. For selected individual particles, circularity showed higher variability than roundness, and the sample circularity distributions obtained by the three devices were completely different. It is clear that circularity data from different studies relying on different devices should not be compared on an absolute scale. The shape parameter roundness was found to be a more robust descriptor than circularity, and it can give a stronger indication of a particulate sample’s shape characteristics on an absolute scale. However, there were still significant differences in the roundness measurements obtained by the CAMSIZER XT and the two Auto-SEM devices, which was attributed to the dissimilar mechanisms of image capture.

Introduction The property and plant of the Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Limited, is situated about 13 miles northeast from Sudbury, in Falconbridge township, near the eastern extremity of the southern Nickel Range. As early as 1899 or 1900 some work was clone on this property by the late Thos. A. Edison, when a shaft was sunk through 80 feet of overburden to within a few feet of the ore-body. At this point quicksand was encountered, which made it impossible to continue with the equipment at hand. As a result, the activities of the Edison party ceased in this section. There was no further progress until 1915 and 1916, when an extensive diamond-drilling campaign, carried out by the E. J. Longyear Company, located the ore-body that is now being worked. The property was acquired by the present operators in 1928, and in September of that year active mining development was commenced. Features Influencing Design Of Plant Early in 1929 plans were prepared for a smelter and the necessary crushing and sorting plant. In spite of the general trend towards the reverberatory furnace as a smelting unit, it was decided to erect a blast-furnace plant. The limited tonnage to be treated, of course, influenced this decision to a great extent. However, it was known that, with the proper procedure, extremely favourable results, both economic and metallurgical, could be obtained in blast furnace smelting. The possibility of very low slag losses, the simplicity of operation by the elimination of roasting plant, fuel plant, etc., the ability to handle coarse feed, and the lower initial cost, were considered factors in favour of the blast furnace. Notwithstanding the fact that we might be called on to treat a certain amount of concentrate, it appeared that the blast furnace was the proper unit for the contemplated operation.

"Load-haul-dump machines (LHDs) are typically used in underground metal mining operations. Delays or inappropriate use of LHDs can result in production loss. Optimized LHD use is especially crucial in larger mines because longer travel distances increase heat, dust, and gas emissions, which in turn increase ventilation costs. This study, conducted at an existing Swedish sublevel cave underground mine, used discrete event simulation and the AutoMod™ DES tool to determine the ventilation costs related to using too many diesel LHDs in a production area with reduced ore pass availability. When fewer ore passes are available, ventilation costs related to operating LHDs in the production area were found to increase by as much as 200, 224, and 306% for one, three, and six LHDs in operation, respectively. ¦ KEYWORDS Discrete event simulation (DES), Loading operations, Production rate, Ventilation costs RÉSUMÉ Dans les exploitations souterraines d’extraction des métaux, on utilise généralement des chargeurs-transporteurs (LHD, de l’anglais Load-haul-dump machines). Load-haul-dump machines (LHDs) are designed for such an environment. Models are available to suit specific features of the working environment such as small, large, or narrow open stopes (Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB, 2007). When carrying a full load, haulage speed is higher for LHDs than for front-end loaders with the same engine size. Also, payloads are approximately 50% higher for LHDs than for front-end loaders (Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB, 2007). LHDs are capable of climbing steep (Bloss, Harvey, Grant, & Routley, 2011). The haulage distance between stope and ore pass is usually between 50 m and 400 m. LHDs are efficient for tramming distances up to 200 m (Bloss et al., 2011), whereas when loading trucks, the LHDs work efficiently when the distance is less than 100 m (Atlas Copco Rock Drills AB, 2007). The largest diesel-powered LHDs, with drive motors of up to 350 kW, can handle a payload of 21 t (Wennmohs, 2014). Most mining equipment runs on diesel fuel, which provides flexibility, high durability, and high efficiency (Pronk, Coble, & Stewart, 2009); however, other alternatives such as electric, hybrid diesel/electric, or hydrogen fuel cell machines are increasingly being developed and used. This change is due to diesel-powered machines accounting for a significant portion of the ventilation costs in the mine (Chadwick, 2008; Paraszczak, Laflamme, & Fytas, 2013). THE dire effects of rapidly vanishing natural resources, widespread unemployment, and increased debt and taxation in recent years have challenged Canadians to produce a practical solution to these national economic problems. In more recent months, wars and rumours of war have indicated, among other things, the need for better control of our mineral wealth. The erection of a smelter on the lower mainland coast of British Columbia, treating all Western ores, and such ores as it will be found advisable to import, will make an important contribution toward a solution of these problems. It is believed that the ores tributary justify a smelter of major proportions. A stock-taking to confirm this can be made with reason-able accuracy in a short time, and this should be undertaken without delay. Enough general information is, however, available .in this paper to justify the technicians of the Department of Mines at Ottawa and of interested smelting companies making a preliminary study of the matter. THE DEFENCE ARGUMENT As a factor in rearmament, metals play a vital part. That rearmament is to continue on an increasing scale is indicated in Premier Chamberlain's address of October 3rd last, when he said: ?'For a long period now we have been engaged in this country in a great programme of rearmament which is daily increasing in pace and volume. let no one think because we have signed 'this agreement between the four powers at Munich we can afford to relax our efforts or call a halt in our armaments at this moment'. As matters stand, the facilities in British Columbia are entirely out of line with the strategic importance of this Province as the Western Front of Canada and the Empire. All our copper ores, and an appreciable part of our lead and zinc ores, are sent for treatment to Japan, United States, and Europe, while we import our iron and alloys. A treatment plant on this Coast would not only give us control of war metals and chemicals but it would provide an increased industrial and research population, badly needed in this area and of the greatest value in the case of war. This is where the mining industry can do its bit.

In September 1945, when the Lynn Lake nickel orebody was discovered Sherritt Gordon Mines was a small copper mining company with rapidly depleting ore reserves at its single producing mine at Sherridon in the Cold Lake area of Manitoba, 100 miles north of The Pas. The company has been formed in 1927, largely through the efforts of Eldon L. Brown, a 27-year old mining engineer, with the financial backing of Thayer and Halstead Lindsley and the Gordon family. The Lindsleys were American mine promoters who had been successful in the Sudbury area, and the Gordons had extensive interests in the lumber industry in northern Ontario. Carl Sherritt, who gave his name to the company, was an American trapper and prospector who had staked the copper property and sold his interest to the new company. Carl Sherritt died in a flying accident at The Pas in 1928. The Sherritt Gordon Mine started production in 1931, shipping copper concentrate to the new Hudson Bay copper smelter at Flin Flon, Manitoba. In 1931 the price of copper was 18¢/lb. Within a year the price had fallen to 5¢ /lb and the mine was forced to close. It remained closed through the Depression years.

Modification of the blasting process considers that any increase in the energy consumption generates greater benefits if done in the later stages (associated with a larger decrease in energy consumption). Therefore, although the blasting cost is doubled, generating a greater proportion of fines in addition to a weaker ore (because with greater loads and appropriate distribution of explosives a greater number of internal cracks is generated), the reduction of the unit cost that occurs in the grinding stages (SAG and ball mills) generates a positive balance in the overall size reduction process. Codelco Chile, Division Andina, has developed an extensive experimental plan to evaluate the concept of blasting modification applying greater energy. This was implemented in two stages, each including a specific mine sector: La Union and Don Luis. This paper reviews the experience of implementing such blasting modifications at the La Union mine and its impact on the design concepts and the operation of the SAG mill plant

THE ERRINGTON B-I mine is located on the Errington orebody of Steep Rock Iron Mines, Limited, at Steep Rock Lake, Ontario. In 1946, this orebody entered the shipping lists of the Lake Superior iron ranges as an open-pit operation. During the period 1946 through 1953, the mine produced a total of 9,000,000 tons of iron ?ore. In 1950, as the mine approached the economic limits for open-pit operations, ground was broken for an underground development to exploit the deposit at depth. The mine is designed for an ultimate production of 1,500,000 tons per year by the block-caving system of mining. The initial shaft is 1,200 feet deep and will produce or-e from the 700 and the 900 levels. The 1,100 level will be used as a drainage level and as a haulageway for waste rock, which is hoisted to surface by skip. Ore from the two production levels moves by a system of ?ore passes to a crushing plant located below the 900 horizon and is hoisted from this point to surface by conveyor belt. At the present time, all material handling on the levels is by tramming, but as tram distances increase conveyor haulage will probably be installed. The initial stage of the Errington B-1 development is expected to produce 6,000,000 tons of ore over a period of four years. The second stage will require deepening of the shaft and development of lowe1? production levels. The conveyor hoisting plant will be extended to serve these new levels. We visualize the mining of this orebcdy down to 2,500 feet by these methods.

This will be achieved by first understanding the overall concept of Operational Excellence, Continuous Improvement and Theory of Constraints as practiced within Vale Canada Limited. Next, the value of utilizing a Constraint Model is demonstrated by primarily identifying constraints. The applications in utilizing Constraint Models will be demonstrated, including the primary benefit of identifying constraints. The remainder of the paper will focus on how to properly setup a Constraint Model using discrete simulation (regardless of simulation software). IT IS the purpose of this paper to show how the design of the larger slope hoists in use in the mines of the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation has tended to evolve ta suit the particular conditions of operation. These hoists are all used for hauling coal in trains or trips of pit tubs up the mine slopes, which usually follow the dip of the seam . As the mine is developed to the dip and the slope grows in length, the length of the rope and the size of the hoist required to handle it rends to become extremely cumbersome. It has been found that the best economic conditions of hoisting are obtained when the length of the slope is limited to about seven or eight thousand feet. Beyond this length it is necessary to offset to one side of the line of slope and start a second or auxiliary slope, which will be served by its own hoist installed underground. With this hoisting distance as a basis, we find that we can economically hoist the outputs required, usually about 1,500 tans per eight hours per slope, by hoisting the coal in trips of about twenty boxes. This, on the grades obtaining, will require a rope of about l 1/4in. diameter, running at a speed of 1,200 ta 1,800 feet per minute, and requiring from 1,200 to 1,800 h.p. at the hoist shaft. The tendency is for the rope speeds of the surface hoists to be a little higher than the underground hoists which relay to them, so that the surface hoist has a small margin of time in hand. The oldest surface hoists were steam-driven, but, with few exceptions, these have given place to electric hoists. With the exception of one hoist, which was altered in design, the steam hoists have not had the opportunity of evolving in the same way as the electric hoists, and will not be mentioned any further.

ABSTRACT: The Maras salt terraces, located between Cuzco and Urubamba in the Andes (southern Peru), are living examples of traditional Incan salt production, where present-day artisanal miners produce salt from shallow pans by solar evaporation. In these terraces, natural spring water, eight to nine times saltier than seawater, is used to produce the salt. The field observations and chemical analyses show that the poorly crystalline traditional salt is finer in particle size and contains impurities such as dolomite and gypsum. These differences are the result of shallow pond depth, contamination from wall erosion, and the nonsequential mode of salt crystallization.
