"IntroductionMost base metal mines sell their concentrate to a custom smelter. The two parties concerned therefore draw up a contract which would detail the conditions under which concentrate sales will take place. The contract will identify treatment and marketing charges (including escalations), deductions for metal losses in the smelter, pricing formula, timing of payments, penalties for deleterious elements, etc.An understanding of the smelter contract is important to the mineral processor, for it will determine how he operates the plant to maximize economic return.Description of Contract ClausesUsing copper concentrate as an example, the smelter contract generally contains the following three basic charges:I. Metal Deductions- as the smelting process does not recover all the metal contained;2. A Smelting Charge- expressed per ton of material to cover costs on the bulk material such as receiving, unloading, thawing in winter, sampling, roasting to drive off sulphur, smelting through the matte and blister stages to recover mostof the copper and precious metals;3. A Refining Charge- expressed per pound of copper.The following is a review in some detail of a number of clauses which could be considered typical of a treatment and marketing type of copper concentrate sales contract. Most normal considerations in an agreement could be covered by the following types of clauses.Terminology- covers definitions, units of measurement to be used (e.g. short tons, troy ounces, etc.), currency (Canadian dollars). The term ""unit"" may be defined - l OJo of a ton of concentrate, e.g. one unit of copper means 20 pounds of copper per short ton of concentrate."

"A non-local formulation of the classical continuum mechanics theory called peridynamics is used to study driven dynamic fractures in the near wellbore region. The controlled application of pressure on the inner walls of the borehole can create multiple fractures that initiate from the borehole and propagate radially outwards. The number of fractures and their final length is primarily controlled by the loading conditions and the in-situ stress state. It is the objective of this study to use a novel numerical technique called peridynamics to investigate: 1) the influence of loading conditions on the fracture pattern, and 2) the effect of in-situ stress anisotropy on fracture propagation. In peridynamics, the momentum equation from the classical theory of solid mechanics is replaced with the integro-differential momentum equation of peridynamics. As a result, discontinuities in the body, such as fractures, occur spontaneously. The material is represented by a continuum body with material points that interact non-locally with all other points within a specified distance. Fractures evolve using a damage evolution law, wherein, damage at any point is represented as the ratio of the number of broken bonds in the current configuration to the total number of bonds in the undeformed configuration.Simulations are performed on simplified test cases and the results are compared to relevant experimental and numerical studies found in the literature. It is shown that the loading rate significantly influences the number of fractures initiated from the borehole as well as their extent. Low loading rate produces fewer fractures, whereas, high loading rates produce longer and a greater number of fractures from the borehole. The numerical method successfully predicts the fracture pattern obtained from a wide range of loading conditions. Predictions also indicate that the resultant fractures are shorter when in-situ stress is applied. Numerical results show that the fracture extension is largest in the direction perpendicular to the minimum compressive stress for the range of loading rates used in this study."

"One of the corporate values mentioned by many companies deals with respect for people. This paper discusses one aspect of this value, namely, the need for clarity of accountabilities and authorities. The job of the manager in achieving this goal is analyzed and the benefits of enhancing the manager-employee conversation outlined. IntroductionCorporate values usually refer to the standards of behaviour that the leaders of the organization expect of all employees, including themselves, in carrying out their duties. Terms such as integrity, respect for the individual, continuous improvement, continuous learning, teamwork, speed, and innovation are quite common. The company-specific values are typically developed by the top executives of the company, and then tested with a broader group of employees. Where the process works, employees have a good understanding of what behaviour is expected of them in doing their work, in making difficult decisions, and in interacting with others.Having spent considerable time in his career investigating and studying the management systems at over 50 of the most successful companies in Canada, the United States, Europe and Japan, the author has had the opportunity to visit organizations such as Hewlett-Packard, 3M, Xerox, Intel, Toyota, NEC, Komatsu, British Airways, and Eastman Chemical. These experiences, together with the work of many other researchers, including the work of Dr. Elliott Jacques, have helped significantly to form the thoughts expressed below.Rather than reviewing the creation of corporate values and their deployment through the organization, these remarks focus on issues over which managers and employees have some control. The value in which managers can have significant impact deals with people and the respect shown them in the workplace. The component of respect to be emphasized is to be clear about expectations or accountabilities for oneself and the people who report to you, and to ensure that personal authority matches those expectations."

THE mineral industry of Canada relies heavily upon the talent of its technical men. It is vital to the well-being of the industry that its supply of young, trained men be adequate. At the present time, the industry is acquiring only 200 new graduates a year. The shrinking supply is far below present and future requirements. Other industries and research organizations are competing for engineers and scientists. Dr. J. B. Mawdsley (1), Past-President of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, has recently outlined a program designed to attack the problem. Dr. J'. C. Sproule (2), another former President of the Institute, has stated that: "The need for selection of trainee material is commonly recognized, but little is done about it." The following paper contains a short discussion of occupational interests, and outlines research, using psychological knowledge and measuring techniques, aimed at the identification of desirable recruits for the mineral industry.

"IntroductionIt was shown by work previously reported that reliable geothermal gradients representative of various regions of the earth's, surface could he obtained from extended surveys of the rock temperatures in operating mines. These surveys showed the presence of anomalies in the isothermal levels and the existence of regions of regular behaviour. Below about 3,000 feet the temperature gradients became quite regular over the areas stud1ed. It is these regular gradients which are taken as representative of the region, wherever possible.The present paper describes the extension of this work which was undertaken to obtain further temperature gradients with a view to correlating them to other geophysical properties determined for the same regions. The additional data obtained have indicated possible reasons for the temperature anomalies. The experimental procedure was similar to that already described and was again made possible through the wholehearted co-operation of the management and the assistance of the personnel of the mines concerned. The research was entirely supported by a grant from the Research Council of Ontario.The equipment was a distinct improvement over that previously used and made it possible to take many more accurate temperature readings in a given time. Thermistor resistance thermometers were used, encased in silver sheaths and protected against damage by heavy copper casings. These were calibrated with a standard platinum resistance thermometer.The bridge used with these thermometers was one of a number designed and built by the Meteorological Service and designated M.S.C. Thermometer Indicator Type C-3. This very convenient and portable instrument operated from batteries in the instrument case. Multiple thermometer connections were provided so that rapid readings• of a number of thermometers was possible to accuracy of the order of 0.1°F. All electrical connections on the panel are covered with Dow-Corning ignition compound to prevent; electrical leakage due to moisture condensation. This, together with the high resistance of the thermometers and components of the bridge, gave much more reliable results than previously obtainable."

A new style of tectonic map based on age of folding has been prepared for the Canadian Appalachian region as part of the Tectonic Map of Canada Project. This style of map pro-vides a clearer picture of the tectonic history of the region than any meth-od hitherto attempted. Precambrian blocks that were relatively unaffected by Palaeozoic de-formation are distinguished on the Great Northern Peninsula and in the Conception Bay region of Newfound-land. K/ A age determinations suggest that these blocks were intruded and metamorphosed during Grenville orogeny. Other Grenville-like rocks, on Cape Breton Island and in New Brunswick, were more actively involved in subsequent Palaeozoic orogeny. Taconic orogeny, the first phase of Palaeozoic deformation, took place in Middle and/or Late Ordovician time and was accompanied by intrusion of ultrabasic rocks. Evidence of the -

"With declining feed grade and increased production targets, it became necessary to upgrade Key Lake's eight stage counter current decantation (CCD) circuit. Following laboratory trials, mill operations recognized that dilution of the feed slurry and buffering of the feed density variations would improve thickener throughput. Plant testing resulted in the installation of Outokumpu's Supaflo ""Floe-Miser"" system. The circuit's flowsheet, instrumentation and control strategy were also upgraded along with the thickener feedwell modifications. The paper will also discuss these modifications and the implementation of the current control strategy.IntroductionCameco Corporation's Key Lake operation is the largest single uranium producer in the world. Current production is fourteen million pounds of uranium oxide (U 308) per year. It is owned 2/3 by Cameco and 1/3 by Uranerz Exploration and Mining with Cameco as the operator.The mine is 570 kilometres north of Saskatoon on the southern edge of the Athabasca basin. Access to the mine is by an all-weather road and a private airstrip.Process DescriptionThe Key Lake milling process consists of five individual plants: crushing and grinding; leaching and counter current decantation (CCD); solvent extraction; yellowcake precipitation and ammonium sulphate crystallization; and bulk neutralization (Figure 1 -Simplified Mill Flowsheet). "The concept of using chemical methods in prospecting dates back at least to the middle of the 16th century. Modern methods of geochemical prospecting, however, based on secondary haloes and utilizing trace-element techniques, were first practised in the U.S.S.R. and the Scandinavian countries in the 1930's. After 1945, methods based on soils, stream sediments and vegetation were rapidly developed in the U.S.A., the United Kingdom, Canada, France and other countries.The modern methods of geochemical prospecting owe their rapid development in the 20th century to the following:1.-Recognition of the primary and secondary dispersion haloes and trains that are associated with all mineral deposits. 2.-Development of accurate and rapid analytical methods utilizing the spectrograph and the various specific sensitive colorimetrie reagents, especially dithizone. 3.-Development of polyethylene laboratory ware of all types and the development of resins. This permitted greater freedom of field analyses and reduced the incidence of contamination.4.-Development of gas chromatography. This permitted the rapid and accurate determination of hydrocarbons in petroleum prospecting.Future research in geochemical prospecting should be focused on the following tasks: 1.-Definition of geochemical provinces and their relation to mineral deposits. 2.-Development of methods for discovering large low-grade deposits. 3.-Development of methods for discovering deeply buried deposits. 4.-Further development of methods to outline primary haloes. 5.-Eiucidation and formulation of techniques to relate the size and intensity of anomalies to the grade of the deposits. 6.-Development and refinement of biogeochemical methods, especially those based on indicator plants, chlorotic or toxic effects, and microbiological techniques. 7.-Definition of the types of primary and secondary haloes associated with accumulations of oil and gas."

"DEFINITION OF THE REGION, ITS BOUNDARIES, AND PHYSICAL AND GE'OLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICSTHIS PAPER concerns the Western Cordilleran region, embracing most of British Columbia, the southern half of Yukon Territory and the southwesternmost part of the District of MacKenzie. It excludes Vancouver Island and the Queen Charlotte Islands, which are discussed in a background paper on the Pacific Continental Shelf. The region is bounded on the south by the northwestern United States, on the west by the continental shelf and Alaska, on the north by the front of the Ogilvie Mountains, on the northeast by the axis of the MacKenzie Mountains and on the east by the Rocky Mountain Trench.The region is dominated by two mountain chains that con tain icefields and glaciers: the St. Elias, Coast and Cascade Mountains in the west; the Selwyn, Pelly, Cassiar, Omineca and Columbia Mountains in the east. The Intermontane region between these mountain chains consists of lower mountains and plateaus. In the mountains, the region above the timberline and many of the steep valley-walls provide good exposures of rock, but these areas are subject to rockslides and landslides and in winter to snow avalanches. Much of the Western Cordillera was covered by ice-sheets at various times during the Pleistocene epoch. Consequently, the larger valleys in the mountains and much of the Intermontane region contain much glacial drift and alluvium and only limited exposures of rock. This same terrain in the Southern Cordillera, however, is the most favourable for agriculture. Parts of the region, particularly in the two mountain chains, are heavily forested. Elsewhere, the forest cover is less, with grassland prevailing in the south and tundra in the north."

"AbstractThe slow progress of conventional geological reconnaissance of the northern Canadian Shield during the past twenty years clearly indicates the need for a radically new field technique. Operation Keewatin, involving the use of helicopters as the traversing vehicles, was planned and executed by the Geological Survey of Canada in response to this requirement.About 57,000 square miles of District of Keewatin, N.W.T., were mapped during the 1952 field season in appropriate detail for publication at 1 inch to 8 miles. The Operation disclosed about 14,100 square miles of Precambrian sedimentary and volcanic rocks ranging in •age from Archaean to Late Proterozoic. About 7,700 square miles of this area are underlain by greenstone. This work was accomplished in a field season of 113 days, including the spring break-up. Routine aerial geological observations were made from two helicopters flying about 300 feet above the ground; these observations were checked by more than 1,700 landings and about an equal number of aerial observations from heights of less than 50 feet. Logistical support was •provided by a Norseman aircraft on skiis or floats. Combined helicopter and Norseman flying time was about 990 hours. More than 1-00 square miles were mapped per helicopter-hour, and about 815 square miles were examined each day that both helicopters operated. The reconnaissance cost about $207,000, or $3.63 per square mile mapped.As a result of this trial use of helicopters there is now available a reasonably proven method whereby an acceptable geological reconnaissance of the barren grounds of the Canadian .Shield within the Districts of Keewatin and Mackenzie might be completed within a decade. Thus, within a few years, it could place at the disposal of the prospecting and mining fraternity data which, by conventional methods, might not be made available to this generation. Due weight must be accorded this time factor when evaluating the aerial technique."

THE mines of the Consolidated Copper and Sulphur Company, consisting of the Eust1s, the Albert, and the Capel mines, are situated w Ascot township, Quebec, about ten miles southeast of Sherbrooke, on the main line of the Quebec Central railway. Of these mines, only the Eustis is now producing, and it has been operated almost continuously for the past seventy years. Mining methods have been improved in recent years but are still old fashioned when compared with those employed in more modern and up-to-date mines. The ore is of milling grade and is mined for its copper and sulphur con-tent. Silver is present in small quantity, together with a trace of gold. The ore is mined by the shrinkage stope method. Pillars are frequently left as supports for the hanging-wall to prevent serious dilution of the ore and are sometimes recovered after the ore is drawn from the stope. Occasionally, small blacks of ore in close proximity to the shaft are mined by a cut-and-fill method. HISTORY ALBERT AND CAPEL MINES: The Albert and the Capel mines, originally known as the Capelton mine, were discovered in 1863 by George Capel (1). By the end of 1866 the Albert shaft had been sunk to a depth of 121 feet on an incline of about 30 degrees where a vein five feet thick was encountered. In 1879, these mines passed into the hands of G. H. Nichols and Company, by whom they were operated practically continuously until 1907. When mining operations ceased in that year, the shafts had reached depths on the incline of approximately 2,300 feet and 1,000 feet, respectively. These mines have been allowed to cave and fill with water and have been inaccessible for many years.

Anglovaal Minerals acquired the Nkana slag dump from Zambia Consolidated Copper mines (ZCCM) in 1998 and embarked on an ambitious project to pioneer the recovery of cobalt from slag using DC smelting technology. Anglovaal Research Laboratories performed initial pioneering smelting tests in a 250 kW DC furnace over a 3-year period before engaging Mintek for three piloting campaigns at the 1.5 MW level. Mintek had previously developed a reductive smelting process, patented in 1995, using a DC arc furnace for the recovery of cobalt from slags. The results of the pilot-plant test campaigns were used as the basis for engineering the commercial 40 MW operation installed at Chambishi Metals plc in Zambia in 2001. This paper traces the development of understanding of the metallurgical fundamentals ultimately used to predict furnace performance, reviews some of the extreme technical challenges faced, how solutions were identified and highlights some of the critical issues identified during piloting and how these impacted both positively and negatively on the final commercial operation.

ABSTRACT One-twentieth-scale field trials for conventional and concept dipper designs were compared to mid- and ultra-class-sized conventional dipper performance. Digging effort was used as the performance indicator for comparison. It was shown that linear relationships exist between dipper capacity, suspended hoist load, and peak hoist load. A ratio of conventional and concept dipper performance at the 1/20th scale was then evaluated to allow prediction of the performance of an ultra-class concept design using an independent ultra-class conventional dipper dataset. The outcome indicated a peak hoist requirement of 15.5% less to achieve the same production as the conventional design.

According to the principle of similarity, the physical and chemical configurations of a system can be defined by ratios of magnitudes within the system and do not de-pend on the size or nature of units of measurement. In the present work, the similarity principle was utilized in evaluating the reducibility of various iron ores in a rotary batch furnace under optimum operating conditions. It was then used successfully to extrapolate the results, first to the operation of a 20-ft. pilot-plant kiln and then to an industrial-size 80-ft. kiln. By means of this systematic analysis of kiln operation, it was possible to increase the production capacity of the kiln considerably. T HE kilns used by the Strategic-Udy process for the partial reduction of iron ores are, in most aspects, similar to conventional calcining kilns. "THE FOLLOWING notes on coal mining in the Edmonton city area are based, in the main, on scattered reports and accounts as little coal mining has been done in this area for about 20 years and few people are left who were involved in what was at one time an important industry of northern Alberta. Although coal mining is not likely to be permitted in the city area itself in the future, a record of this work is warranted to indicate the ·conditions and problems that may be encountered if underground mining again is proposed in the district in the same geological formations and in similar strata. Coal mining in the Edmonton area developed with the influx of settlers in the latter part of the nineteenth century and the first part of the present century. Probably local coal was used by the Fort's blacksmith as early as 1841, and the early settlers probably were 'gopherholing' into the outcrops along the river banks by the 1870s. The first report of commercial coal mining was in 1880 when a contract was let by the Hudson's Bay Company for the provision of 300 tons. As the population in the city and northern parts of the province grew, many new mines were opened along the river and in the district, and coal was even shipped by barge to points in Saskatchewan(1 ,2) By 1909 the Department of Public Works reported that 'Edmonton stands as the second largest domestic coal producing centre in the province'. It continued to hold this position until 1942. From about 1912 to 1951 annual production from mines in the city and surrounding district ranged between 0.38 and 0.65 million tons, depending on weather, wars and strikes. Production began to decline in 1951 because of the increasing availability and consumption of natural gas which was piped into the city and then provided to other towns and rural areas in the northern part of the province. Taylor noted that between 1880 and March 1970, when the last mine within the city area closed, the total of mines and prospects within the Edmonton city area rose to 153. Most of them were small; not more than 20 produced more than a quarter of a million tonnes during their entire life, and only three produced a million tonnes or more. As described by Taylor ""within the city district workings extend discontinuously from the apex of a narrow triangle near Groat Bridge to the base of the triangle in the Clover Bar area"". The larger mines were in this latter area. Approximate locations of the old mine workings in the city are shown in Taylor's atlas. A number of other coal mines were worked in the Rabbit Hill, Big Island, St. Albert, Namao, Cardiff and Morinville districts around the city."

THIS paper is entitled "Some" problems, rather than "The" problems, met in selling coal, since the problems to be met in selling any commodity have to deal with an infinite number of circumstances and conditions. These are believed to be more varied in the case of coal than probably any other commodity. This is due, perhaps, to the fact that coal has been one of the basic materials in the guiding of industrial and national achievement for the past two hundred years. During this time its use has developed from a most haphazard one to uses involving all modern scientific methods, which, rather than simplifying matters as regards the marketing of coal, have added many fresh problems, and these vary according to the particular market served. Since the concern of this paper is primarily the selling of Nova Scotia coal, it is proposed to deal chiefly with some of the specific conditions met in the markets presently served by this coal. For the purpose of discussion, these markets may be considered as divided into three main groups, namely, the Maritime market, the Quebec market, and the Ontario market. THE MARITIME MARKET First of all, let us consider the Maritime market. This is a market which has been regularly served by Nova Scotia coal since coal mining became the first industry in Cape Breton, slightly over one hundred years ago. Conditions as applying to the use of coal have naturally tended to adjust themselves to the characteristics of the coal most readily available, and, therefore, marketing problems are fewer in the Maritimes than in districts where many coals of varied characteristics are offered. Up to recent years, the problems involved were chiefly those of providing satisfactory service insofar as de-liveries were concerned. However, with the speeding-up of manufacturing processes and the necessity of reducing costs to a minimum, users of coal have become interested in obtaining coal that will give the most economical service. It is, therefore, now of importance that the salesman should have full knowledge of the particular conditions applicable to each customer's use in order to deal to the best advantage.

This paper consists of two main parts. The first, under the heading Preparations, deals with suggested preparations to be carried out in advance so that loss of life might be prevented should a fire occur. The second part, under the heading Fire Procedure, deals with actual organized procedure to be followed for the preservation of life if and when a fire occurs. The writer realizes that these preparations and procedures may be to some extent applicable to only a few mines with a relatively simple vein system and that each mine would need to formulate a procedure to conform to its own particular conditions, scope, and degree of complexity. Preparations 1. - Ventilation Control The objective in ventilation control in the event of a tire underground is to keep the travelways, through which men must pass to reach surface, supplied with air not deficient in oxygen and free from gases and smoke. Without some control of the volume and direction of the main air currents flowing through the mine, the success of removing men to surface might be seriously hampered. ? This control is achieved by means of mechanical ventilation forcing air through desired airways and workings with the assistance of doors to regulate the volume and direction of the air flow. In connection with fans and doors, the possibility of short-circuiting should always be taken into consideration, as it can often nullify the value of a fan and possibly trap men in dangerous atmosphere if the short-circuiting involves the fire area. Main fans are often installed so that they can be reversed in a short time. However, fans should not be reversed unless this is found absolutely essential by those in authority. Misjudgment in this respect could cause the loss of life to men who might naturally take refuge in what they believe by experience to be a fresh air stream. Another precaution to be taken is to see that doors in airways are fastened in a fixed position so that they cannot be sucked or blown open when the fan is reversed, otherwise short-circuiting could possibly render the fan useless.

The future development of nickel laterite deposits is crucial with regards to satisfying impending nickel demands. The commercial implementation of new hydro/pyrometallurgical processes in recent years has led to significant improvements in the extraction of nickel from the laterite ores. One potential alternative pyrometallurgical processing route would be to selectively reduce the nickel and produce a concentrate with nickel contents similar to those attainable in the conventional flotation of sulphide ores. However, even bench scale studies have not yet been able to produce a high grade (>15% nickel) concentrate from a low grade laterite ore. The present research involved the microwave vacuum reduction roasting of a nickel laterite ore to yield a high grade concentrate, rich in nickel. Firstly, the effects of temperature and pressure on the nickel grade and recovery were investigated using a thermodynamic model. Secondly, briquettes containing a mixture of charcoal and a low grade silicate nickel laterite ore were reacted in a microwave vacuum system. The experimental variables studied were the input microwave energy, pressure and absorbed microwave power. Thirdly, the ferronickel in the reacted briquette was concentrated by magnetic separation and nickel grades of up to 21% could be achieved.
