The limit of Hall - Petch relationship in ultra fine grained steels has been examined based on dislocation pile-up mechanism. When the grain size becomes small the dislocation multiplicity ceases resulting in very low work hardening rate in these materials. An approximate analysis of the theories of hardening indicates that H-P relation is obeyed up to 100nm. It appears that grain refinement is not the suggested approach to improve toughness as well as strength below a critical size.

"The main purpose of geometallurgy is to develop a model to predict the variability in the mineral processing performance within the ore body. Geometallurgical tests used for developing such a model need to be fast, practical and inexpensive and include as an input data relevant and measureable geological parameters like elemental grades, mineral grades and grain size. Important in each geometallurgical program is to define the number of samples needed to be sent for geometallurgical testing to enable reliable metallurgical forecast. This is, however, a complicated question that does not have a generic answer.To study the question on sampling a simulation environment was built including a synthetic ore body and sampling & assaying module. A synthetic Kiruna type iron oxide - apatite deposit was established based on case studies of Malmberget ore. The synthetic ore body includes alike variability in rock types, modal mineralogy, chemical composition, density and mineral textures as its real life counterpart. The synthetic ore body was virtually sampled with different sampling densities for a Davis tube testing, a geometallurgical test characterising response in magnetic separation. Based on the test results a forecast for the processing of the whole ore body was created. The forecasted parameters included concentrate tonnages, iron recovery and concentrate quality in terms of iron, phosphorous and silica contents.The study shows that the number of samples required for forecasting different geometallurgical parameters varies. Reliable estimates on iron recovery and concentrate mass pull can be made with about 5-10 representative samples by geometallurgical ore type. However, when the concentrate quality in terms of impurities needs to be forecasted, the sample number is more than 20 times higher. This is due to variation in mineral liberation and shows the importance of developing techniques to collect qualitative information on mineral and ore textures in geometallurgy."

A conductivity cell, developed previously, was employed in an effort to investigate the inter-relation between electrical conductivity and acidity of sulphuric acid - metal sulphate solutions at high temperatures. The measured solutions include the H2SO4-H2O, MgSO4-H2O, H2SO4-MgSO4-H2O, H2SO4-MgSO4-Al2(SO4)3-H2O solutions. All solutions reported in this paper were measured from 15 to 250 °C at equilibrium vapour pressure. The maximum measured concentrations of H2SO4, MgSO4 and Al2(SO4)3 were 0.45 m, 0.30 m and 0.10 m, respectively. It was found that, from 15 to 250°C, there is a linear relationship between H2SO4 concentration and electrical conductivities for acid concentration up to 0.45 m. At 250 °C and constant H2SO4 concentration, the solution conductivity drops with the increase of MgSO4 concentration. Lt is suggested that this drop is caused by a decrease in the concentration of H. Finally, an empirical model was developed based on the available measurements. This model has been tested against real laterite leach solutions where sulphuric acid and metal sulphates are dominant electrolytes. The average difference between the estimate acid concentration from this model and the one from titration was less than 5%.

"INTRODUCTION Secondary mine ventilation has been hamstrung by the availability of fans that satisfy many competing operational factors. The sometimes legislated requirement of adequate volume to the working face, the minimisation of excavation required to fit the selected secondary fan and the power requirements of various operational phases has, in the past, not been satisfied with just one system. The new system being introduced overcomes all these competing requirements in one simple unit with an added bonus of being very durable without loss of performance when wear occurs on the impeller. Existing Operational Situation Several studies (e.g., CIPEC, 2005; LCG Energy Management Group, 2009) have found that between 42% and 49% of mining energy costs are associated with mine ventilation, depending on the type of mine and the equipment used. If we then look at the general breakdown of installed power of the secondary fan to primary vent fans, the ratio is around 2:1. Thus the total energy costs of the secondary ventilation represents about 25% of the overall mining energy costs. It is of interest to note that the cost of running a typical two stage axial vs the cost of purchasing and general maintenance cost of the same fan over a 10 year period, the breakdown will be conservatively in the order of 40:1.The currently available secondary ventilation axial fan have one duty curve at any given time. Generally this can be changed manually within the motor power parameters but requires a minor outage and removal of the fan to do the pitch adjustments. As the bag vent ducts grow longer, the supplied air reduces to a point where inadequate air is supplied to the working face. This is exacerbated by underground equipment putting additional resistance in the heading and further reducing the supplied air at the working face. This shortfall is normally corrected by the installation of an additional fan in the system to overcome losses in the bag system but comes at a cost of production as the heading needs to be shutdown to install the second fan. This also means that the heading is supplied with excessive air on the shorter runs with a wastage of fan power."

"The study of the physical properties of asbestos minerals requires a careful isolation of the fiber from the wall rock and, at a later stage, a comparison of these physical properties with those of fibers that have passed through the milling and beneficiation processes.The effects of mineral impurities, loss of fiber length and the formation of extreme fines (asbestic and/or associated minerals) often show up in the formation of special asbestos products as well as in the commercial production of asbestos papers, mill-boards, asbestos cement products, plastics and insulation materials, and in the filtration of blood plasma and wines.Numerous test methods have been developed in Canada and in England for use in the asbestos industry. Special treatments of asbestos fibers have been used to improve their physical and chemical properties and to eliminate impurities.Numerous problems connected with the use of asbestos fibers are discussed, such as the effects of asbestos on filtration, surface area, surface treatments using organic or inorganic materials, the surface charge on the fiber, the presence of magnetite and air pollution elimination. Biological studies on finely ground asbestos, when dispersed in 0.9 per cent sodium chloride solution and then sterilized and injected into hamsters, show that by reducing the dose, the tissue damage can be largely avoided. In these experiments, Arizona asbestos fibers were carefully extracted from the wall rock, finely ground, and examined chemically and micros-copically for any mineral impurities that might be present so that any effect on the hamsters would be directly due to the presence of the asbestos. The harsh Arizona fiber induced more extensive tissue response than the soft fiber when tested in hamsters."

The technical feasibility of ammonia leaching of PGM bearing Platreef flotation concentrates was investigated as an alternative method for the recovery of base metals prior to precious metal recovery. The composition of the concentrates includes 2.02% Cu and 3.17% Ni, and the major base metal minerals are chalcopyrite and pentlandite. Optimal leaching conditions were initially established in shake flask experiments to be a solution containing 4 M NH4OH, 4 M (NH4)2CO3 and a pH range between 9 and 10. These were used as base case conditions in column and batch stirred tank reactor tests, where the effects of total ammonia concentration and operating temperature were explored further. At optimal conditions nearly 100% Cu and Ni extraction were obtained in the batch stirred tank reactor, and 95% Cu and 60% Ni extraction was obtained in columns. The activation energy for chalcopyrite and pentlandite was 36 kJ/mol and 16 kJ/mol, respectively, in both reactors, indicating different reaction pathways for the two minerals. Gas-liquid mass transfer appears to be the limiting reaction step in columns much more than in tanks, and the degree of ammonia loss to air is significant. This initial test work indicates the feasibility of using ammonia leaching for this and similar materials as an alternative route to conventional smelting and refining prior to PGM recovery, but a number of technical challenges still need to be overcome.

Consequently, its files contain a very large number of reports, and also of maps, of ail descriptions. REPORTS Before describing the filing of maps, a brie{ note on our general system of filing reports will perhaps clarify the discussion. Reports of a non-periodic nature, primarily those based upon examinations by field engineers, are separated from all other data and filed in what we know as the Mine Series System. Each property on which reports are written is given a serial number, known as the Mine Series Number. This serial number is assigned at the time the first report is filed and it remains permanently identified with the property, regardless of its state of activity. Our mine series numbers now total over 5,000. The serial number for a property may be found by referring to an alphabetical index of properties. INTRODUCTION FOR THE purpose of this paper, western bituminous coal is defined as steam coal produced in Alberta and southeastern British Columbia for sale primarily to railways and industries. Before examining present and future markets of this industry, it is proper to review briefly financial and operating conditions within the industry. The report of the Royal Commission on Coal, 1946, supplies financial data from which some conclusions may be drawn. In 1944, the industry as defined above had share capital of $24,886,696. In the fifteen years 1930 to 1944, inclusive, the industry produced: 44,364,211 tons of coal. The profit on this tonnage amounted to $4,678,382.58, which represented 10.6 cents per ton of production. Miscellaneous earnings increased the amount available for dividends to shareholders to a total of $8,487,952.41, which is equal to, 19.1 cents per ton of production. Dividends actually paid in this fifteen-year period amounted to $12,332,040.64, which represented an annual average rate of 3.40 per cent on share capital. It is worthy of note that, in 1944, the net current position of the industry, including investments, was $8,753,874.51. The writer believes that the financial position of the industry with respect to capital, current financial position, and net earnings, has not significantly changed from the fifteen-year period out-lined above. The figures quoted indicate the following situation: (1) The western bituminous coal industry is adequately financed. (2) The industry has followed a conservative dividend policy and has accrued funds for contingencies. (3) The industry has sold its production at very reasonable prices as evidenced by its moderate earnings per ton of production.

On the other hand, we recognize that short-term issues are important and, as we are reading and hearing, many of the right short-term solutions continue to elude our politicians, our policy makers, and even some of those with knowledge and authority in the energy field.A year ago, if you asked people how they would go about conserving energy, they would probably have said turn out the lights. "This paper examines typical visual inspections of operational soft rock mine shafts and discusses some of the challenges involved, many of which are associated with inconsistent inspection practices. The paper presents the development of a more standardized approach to periodic shaft inspections that supplement the more frequent inspections performed by shaft crews at the mine. This approach helps to keep an accurate record of changing conditions, compare conditions between multiple mine sites, as well as prioritize and plan potential remedial work. INTRODUCTION Shaft inspections, whether they are performed daily or weekly by members of the shaft crew at the mine, or periodically by consultants, traditionally involve a visual inspection undertaken with personnel traveling on an inspection deck on the conveyance, taking notes and photos. Inspections are typically required by mining regulations and carried out to identify and address hazards before a safety incident occurs that could cause harm to people or damage to property, as well as to help plan required maintenance work. Depending on the site, there can be many challenges associated with inspections in the shaft, especially compared to a typical inspection at surface. Some of these challenges are associated with the shaft environment itself, while others are related to the subjectivity of inspections and a lack of standardization, particularly between multiple sites within the same operating company. Recognizing these challenges, a more consistent and repeatable approach to shaft inspections in soft rock mines is evolving. This approach involves reviewing available historical data, comparing sites with similar conditions, establishing survey control, documenting observations and measurements with locations, and updating as-built or condition drawings. Part of this standardized approach is the implementation of an innovative 360-degree camera with a high-power lighting system that can be used either remotely or alongside personnel completing a traditional visual inspection. The system uses six cameras to take photos at a rate of 15 frames per second, with the image data subsequently processed and stitched, then joined into a high-resolution video. This tool improves time-efficiency, objectivity, and repeatability of inspections."

Using Unity 3D as a collaborative multi-user virtual on-line environment, an interactive virtual underground mine platform (IVUMP) is being developed to provide on-line access to mine safety preparedness training with a focus on mine emergency response exercises (MEREs). Communication and information flow among MERE participants and their actions can be monitored, recorded and evaluated. A mine ventilation simulation utility VFIRE is being incorporated to enhance the realism and interactive nature of the ?in-world? exercises as well as extend its functionality to include training in real-time ventilation and fire control.

"The kinetics of chalcopyrite leaching in acidic ferric/ferrous sulfate media under atmospheric conditions in the presence of pyrite has been investigated. It has been found that pyrite samples from different sources affect the rate of chalcopyrite leaching differently. A strong correlation between the amount of silver associated with the pyrite and its effectiveness has been noted. In this study, improvement of the catalytic properties of pyrite such that all pyrite samples accelerate the rate of copper extraction regardless of their sources is demonstrated, and a detailed discussion of the mechanisms involved in the process of chalcopyrite leaching in the presence of silverenhanced pyrite is presented. INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that chalcopyrite resists leaching in sulfate media. It has been proved that pyrite facilitates the leaching of chalcopyrite (Berry et al., 1978; Dixon et al., 2008; Mehta and Murr, 1983; Muñoz et al., 2008; Nowak et al., 1984, Tshilombo, 2004). Considering the catalytic effects of pyrite on accelerating the kinetics of chalcopyrite leaching, Dixon and Tshilombo (2005) have developed a new process, known as Galvanox™, which has several advantages over other hydrometallurgical processes. Galvanox™ runs under atmospheric conditions, so it requires only low-cost leaching tanks. The sulfur yield at this temperature is high (>95%) which leads to low oxygen consumption and low sulfuric acid generation. The operating temperature is below the melting point of sulfur which eliminates the use of surfactants. This process also does not require fine grinding. Reaction 1 shows the overall leaching reaction in the Galvanox™ process.CuFeS2 + O2 + 2 H2SO4 = CuSO4 + FeSO4 + 2 S0 + 2 H2O (1)Complete copper recovery from the Galvanox™ process can be achieved at a considerably higher rate than other atmospheric ferric sulfate leaching processes (Dixon et al., 2008). Recycling pyrite and recovering copper from tailings with the Galvanox™ process have also been evaluated in continuous pilot leaching campaigns (Dixon et al., 2007)."

The Advocate Mines Limited asbestos property is 6 km north of Baie Ve rte on the northeast coast of Newfoundland. Mining began in the early 1960s and was concluded in 1981. The chrysotile asbestos deposit lies at the north end of the Baie Verte Lineament, the interface between a closing ocean floor and continental margin. Asbestos occurs within ultramafic rocks of abducted ophiolite massifs that were thrust westward against Fleur-de-Lys Supergroup metasediments (continental rise sediments) in the Lower to Middle Ordovician. The asbestos-bearing ultramafics belong to the Central Ultrabasic Sequence of the Advocate Complex. Serpentinized peridotite of this sequence has a 'waste cap' core that grades outward to increasingly sheared rock. Asbestos is found mainly in a northtrending, basin-shaped zone surrounding the core, specifically within fractured serpentinized peridotite that abuts the sheared rock. Asbestos appears as stockworks of chrysotile cross fibre veins and is concentrated between brown, narrow brucitic dunite dykes and sills. Shear contacts commonly surround the ultrabasic body. Cross faults and complex Jointing also exist. The Advocate Mines Limited mill produced 65,000 tonnes of Group IV fibres and 1 l , 000 tonnes of Group VJ fibres annually. The bagged product enjoyed markets worldwide.

To determine the optimal circuit configuration for gravity gold recovery consideration should be given to a range of factors in addition to the efficiency of the gravity circuit, including capital costs, ease of operation and impact on comminution. The most common gravity gold circuits utilise a centrifugal concentrator treating a portion of the hydrocyclone underflow. This paper will examine this option and alternative circuit configurations to illustrate the effect of various gravity circuit feed and tailings configurations on the equipment sizing, capital costs, operating costs, water balance, comminution efficiency and gravity gold recovery. The optimum circuit configuration can provide reduced capital and operating costs, maximise gravity gold recovery and improve comminution efficiency.

"Most geologists and mining engineers, in the course of their professional careers, frequently become involved with the appraisal of metalliferous mineral deposits and develop a familiarity with and standard approach to the evaluation of these deposits. When the same individuals approach the industrial mineral field, however, their usual approach pattern can be rudely disturbed.This paper highlights the difference in appraisal approach and outlines the factors common to both but which have entirely different emphasis. These comprise geological appraisal, analytical requirements, the importance of transportation, marketing requirements and standards, including appropriate allowances for product development, and marketing penetration.Out of these ""different"" considerations, however, a pat-tern or standard approach emerges which is as common to the industrial mineral field as that used either consciously or subconsciously in the metallic field.The paper reviews the different factors and points of emphasis and offers an outline of the common pattern of appraisal for industrial minerals."

An electrochemical process is described for converting concentrates of base-metal sulphides to the corresponding pure metals and elemental sulphur. The application of the process to chalcopyrite is discussed. The process is also of potential interest in processing copper-nickel sulphides, and laboratory data concerning this potential are presented. The process creates neither air nor water pollution.

In this study the effect of solidification rate, T6 and T7 heat treatments on thermal fatigue resistance of A319 aluminum was investigated. Increasing of the solidification rate improved the thermal fatigue resistance of the alloy by refinement of the microstructure. The most sensible areas for thermal fatigue crack growth were the eutectic zones, T6 and T7 heat treatments improved the thermal fatigue resistance of the alloy by enhancing of the matrix resistance against the crack propagation. The slight reduction of the thermal fatigue resistance after T7 heat treatment is attributed to coarsening of the precipitates which reduces the matrix resistance.

The Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland consists of a Precambrian core of gneisses and granitic rocks, cut by numerous diabase dykes. This complex is surrounded by an envelope of sedimentary rocks of Cambrian to Carboniferous age. Radiometric dates from two granite masses in the core give a mini-mum age of -945 m.y. (Grenville) for the last major tectonic activity. This Grenville deformation conferred upon the core substantially its present structure which has controlled later events to a marked degree. Block movements of the core, dominantly in a vertical sense, have ex-posed it to erosion at intervals. The nature and distribution of the flanking sedimentary rocks and the present relief of the peninsula suggest four such movements. THE Great Northern Peninsula extends some 150 miles north-northeast from the northwest corner of the main body of the island of Newfoundland. It separates the Gulf of St. Lawrence from the Atlantic Ocean, except for the 12 mile wide

"Pre-treatment of mill feed in a minerals processing plant enables for higher production efficiency per ton of product, reduction of consumables and diverting mineral feed types. Sensor based particle sorting allows for pre-concentration of the run-of-mine (ROM) material prior to other concentrating process. Various sensors provide different responses from the minerals in measured particles. The capability of “accepting” or “rejecting” particles based on sensor responses is investigated in specific test work for each project. Modern sorting machines use pneumatic actuators to divert the reject particles from the material stream. This paper discusses the incorporation of ore sorting test work in processing and plant design. When taking the effects of a sorting circuit into account early in the process planning phase, the downstream process can be adequately sized and impacts evaluated. Potential benefits include but are not limited to increased head grade, lower tonnage to the mill, increased mining operations, removal of deleterious elements and changed properties in the process feed. In a case study we present the Keliber lithium project in central Finland. The plant will produce 9000 tons of lithium carbonate per year from a spodumene ore. Ore sorting and flotation tests were carried out in laboratory and pilot scale. Process models were designed and simulations performed using Outotec’s HSC Chemistry Simulation software. Changes in the flotation performance (grade, recovery, impurity levels) were simulated with and without the pre-concentration of the ROM material. The metallurgical performance and mine economics of the different operational scenarios were evaluated using the Ore-Met optimizer module of the simulation software.INTRODUCTION Challenges in the recent years such as declining ore grades, increasing energy prices, scarcity of water and increasing environmental regulations raise the demand for more efficient processing technologies. Sensor based sorting offers a method for pre-concentration or waste rejection at an early process stage. The technology analyzes each rock particle separately for their unique physical and chemical properties, and diverts the particles into separate material streams by high pressure air jets. Successful implementation relies on ore heterogeneity, differential sensor response and suitable feed preparation."
