"This paper describes the implementation of model-based predictive control (MPC) on a vacuum heat exchange network at Alcan's Jonquière Complex. The plant produces alumina from bauxite ore using the Bayer Process.The MPC system was commissioned in 2000, by Alcan personnel and an Advanced Control Engineer from Matrikon. The application has achieved an uptime of about 97%.The benefits were:• Energy savings : 0.5% - live steam reduction• Reduced variation: standard deviation of key temperatures reduced by 50%• Plant throughput increase: via the automated use of surge tanks• Decreased supervision time: by plant operations• Faster and easier diagnosis of problems and plant constraintsThe benefits were higher than expected with a payback time around 12 months.The purpose of the vacuum heat exchange network is to recover energy from a hot stream (pregnant liquor) by transferring it to a cold stream (spent liquor). The system is very tightly coupled, and the main constraints of the multivariable control system are: • to control the many tank levels involved in the process (8 tanks)• to maximize the temperature of the heated streams (spent liquor)• to prevent cooled streams (pregnant liquor) from cooling to below a minimum temperatureThe system includes 9 manipulated, 14 controlled and 2 feedforward variables.The advanced control implementation runs under an expert system environment and provides added flexibility to the overall control strategy."

The problem of quantifying the full performance potential of an ore body in a concentrator, and how to configure a flowsheet to achieve that potential, either for a new operation or an existing one, is a strategic challenge. Modern flowsheeting technology that has been developed over the last twenty years has provided a suitable platform to achieve this. The integrated use of geology, compositional and quantitative mineralogy, sampling models, quality controls, and mineral processing, including flotation testing, has evolved into what is now called process mineralogy. Two specific tools have been developed and validated as standard methods in this toollbox. These are statistical benchmark surveying and high-confidence flotation testing. Both of these have borrowed from the sampling theories of Pierre Gy and from geostatistics. Additionally, they work on a replicate measurement and averaging basis, thus reducing the overall random error level. With this arrangement, one is in a position to characterize the ore from true samples and identify and quantify the economic minerals present in a manner that easily brings out the processing implications and likely grades and recoveries. In particular, the approach captures the variation in the ore body, which, if properly translated into the flowsheet design, minimizes the risk that unexpected responses will develop in the concentrator operations. A further advantage is that successful plant trials are now possible and practical. An overview of this approach is presented with two case studies.

The Paracatu Expansion Project III in Brazil was implemented between 2006 and 2008 to increase the existing capacity from 20 to 61 Million tons per year of gold ore treatment. This expansion led the Brazilian subsidiary of the Canadian Kinross Gold Corporation to become the single largest gold producer in Brazil and the largest single gold concentrator in the world, with a nominal capacity to treat around 167,000 tons per day of ore. This paper describes the Project Development areas for the Paracatu Expansion, using the approach proposed by the Project Management Institute (PMI) and the methodology included in the PMBOK (Project Management Book of Knowledge). The author has more than 20 years of experience in the gold mining industry, having worked as a plant metallurgist, mill superintendent and development manager for RPM until he took the position as the Project Manager of the Paracatu Expansion III in 2005. Luis Tondo has a BSc in Mining Engineering from UFRGS-Brazil, an MScEng from the University of Queensland - Australia and an MBA degree from FDC-Brazil. Luis is currently based in Santiago-Chile, acting as the Project Director for developing projects in Latin America for the Kinross Gold Corporation.

"To comply with the new Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, the automotive industry is aiming to reduce weight and increase the power and efficiency of small displacement engines through the application of forced induction technologies. As an example, there are now several 2.0 litre turbocharged engines in production, producing in excess of 240 hp. To meet the need for improved fatigue properties in the engine blocks used in these high-output engines, a new water-cooled chill technology is under exploration at UBC in partnership with General Motors and Nemak. A series of experimental techniques were used to assess the capability of the new chill to extract heat from an A319 casting in the vicinity of the main bearing bulk head. The results show that this method has the potential to achieve a reduction in secondary dendrite arm spacing thus meeting the new microstructural specifications for these engines.INTRODUCTION The automotive industry is working to meet the stricter efficiency requirements laid out within the CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) regulations (Bastani, 2012; Cole, 1995; Mackay, 2011; Miller, 2000), while at the same time not sacrificing performance. One approach is to increase the use of lightweight materials, which leads to a decrease in the overall vehicle weight and fuel consumption (Cole, 1995; Mackay, 2011; Miller, 2000). Other approaches include smaller displacement engines and gas-electric hybrid drivetrains. However, one trend that is becoming clear, is a greater emphasis on force induction gasoline engines. This allows for weight reduction to be achieved with smaller displacement engines without sacrificing performance. One consequence of this approach is that the engine block materials are subject to higher in-service thermal and mechanical cyclic loads (Cole, 1995; Miller, 2011; Heysler, 2001) The fatigue properties of an alloy are strongly affected by a number of the, as-cast, microstructure features including, Secondary Dendrite Arm Spacing (SDAS), porosity and eutectic lamella spacing (including intermetallic ß-Al5FeSi platelets) (Mackay, 2010a; Mackay, 2010b; Viet-Duc, 2015; Casellas, 2005). It is generally accepted they can act as fatigue initiation sites and that a reduction in their size will result in an improvement in fatigue performance. For a given alloy chemistry, one of the key parameters affecting the length scale of all three is cooling rate (Mackay, 2000)."

THIS PAPER has resulted from a preliminary draft of a background paper prepared anonymously for the Science Council's Special Study of the Solid-Earth Sciences in Canada. The draft was circulated to eighty-four Canadian geologists; forty-eight of these responded with criticisms of the draft. All critical re-marks were considered carefully and most have been incorporated in the final paper in an attempt to balance the author's bias, although this bias undoubtedly still appears. Indications of support for a particular statement or section were also helpful, because many of these contradicted criticisms and enabled the author to judge the consensus. Thus, all criticism could not be incorporated because the referees did not agree. It is interesting that some remarks were con-sidered overstatements by some and too bland by others. The most perplexing critical comment was one which suggested a new author was needed, and went on to name the existing author as the most likely candidate.

This paper studies two methods that account for risks associated with gold mining projects such as mineral risks and country risks. The first method is sensitivity analysis, which investigates the effects of a change in any economic parameter such as operating cost, capital investment, gold price or taxes on the viability of the project. The second method is Monte Carlo Simulation technique, which takes into consideration the simultaneous random variation of the economic parameters on the project's viability. An automated simulation cash flow model has been developed as part of this paper. Sensitivity analysis and the simulation model have been used to investigate the economic viability of the Dokrupe Gold Project (DGP) serving as a test case. It is concluded that, the Monte Carlo Simulation technique gives a more realistic judgement of the economic viability of gold mining projects.

"Laboratory semi-batch flotation tests were conducted using two different sulphide ore samples. The size reduction was adjusted to cover a wide range of flotation feed size distributions. Results show that similar recoveries can be achieved independently of the fineness of grind. This result suggests that possible energy savings could be achieved by a redistribution of the power between the grinding and regrinding mills. The behaviour of the selectivity curves shows that some gangue minerals are more sensitive to particle size than other ones, implying the existence of preferential associations between minerals in the ore.INTRODUCTIONInteractions between grinding and flotation have been studied for many years, and still a robust model to link the two processes lacks to be developed (Girard et al., 2005; Bazin et al., 2001). The ore size reduction liberates mineral grains, while flotation separates them into valuable minerals and gangue. The more size reduction that is applied to the ore the more important is the mineral liberation but also the production of fine particles that can pose problems during flotation (Trahar and Warren, 1976). The definition of the grinding requirement for flotation is a complex problem (Rickelton and Dell, 1977; Sosa Blanca et al., 2000; Morrison, 1993; Wei and Gay, 1999).This paper analyzes the effect of the fineness of grind using semi-batch flotation test results. The first two sections describe the test procedure and the results. The third section analyzes the results in terms of liberation and selectivity, and proposes a possible redistribution of power between grinding and regrinding mills."

"Agnico Eagle Mines Limited (AEM) is a Canadian-based gold producer with operations in Canada, Finland and Mexico. In 2010, AEM produced its first gold bar in Nunavut, Canada as it started its Meadowbank operation. It is also in 2010 that AEM acquired the Meliadine property, which is located 25 Km North of Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, Canada. The Meliadine gold project is an advanced exploration and development project, comprising of workers camp, underground and open mines, a processing plant and all the services facilities and infrastructures required to sustain operation in a remote arctic environment.Pending formal board approval, production start-up is planned for Q3 2019 and the process flowsheet is based on an ore processing rate of 1.1 million dry tonnes per year (3,000 dry tonnes per day from underground mining) for the first three years, and 1.98 million dry tonnes per year (5,000 dry tonnes per day from both underground and open pit mining) for the remaining years at 92% process plant availability.To the end of 2015, more than 45 metallurgical test programs have been conducted on the Meliadine deposits. Based on the results of these programs, an optimal gold circuit was designed, comprising of crushing, grinding, gravity separation and cyanide leaching with a carbon-in-leach circuit (CIL), followed by cyanide destruction and filtration of the tails for dry stacking. The assumed gold recovery for the reserves averages 96.0% at a 7.44-g/t gold average mill feed grade."

"The most economical way of dewatering mineral concentrates is to reduce the moisture content in the material mechanically using thickeners and filtration avoiding thermal drying whenever possible. In addition to this, the dewatering process should produce low moisture cake, high quality liquid, consume little energy. As a part of the dewatering process The CERAMEC® capillary filter has been proven to meet these requirements in over 150 installations. The filtration is done by using ceramic filter plates with small pore size. The capillary action in the filter medium secures gas free filtration at good vacuum, and due to the small pore size, filtrate is crystal clean and particle free. The energy consumption is minimal. This paper will discuss results from filters installed at Pyhäsalmi Mine Oy in Finland where the technology was has been used since the late eighties. Results from more recent installations like Los Pelambres in Chile and LKAB in Sweden will also be discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe idea of using capillary action to make dewatering more efficient was invented two decades ago. Ten years later whole filter plants utilizing the new method were delivered to mine concentrators for dewatering of mineral concentrates. Further development of ceramic membrane plates made it possible to meet the requirements in iron ore dewatering. In addition to low cake moisture, high capacity and low energy consumption, there are a lot of environmental advantages in using capillary filtration. In 2009, the Canadian Mineral Processors (CMP) became aware that Canadian securities regulators were amending the contents of National Instrument 43-101. NI 43-101 is a set of regulations which establish how ore resources and reserves are presented to the investing public. The documents produced under NI 43-101 are central to the ability of many companies to raise financing for their projects. With the increase of metallurgical complexity, and decrease of head grades encountered in new deposits, the role of the Qualified Person (QP) in determining process performance has become increasingly critical in determining the classification category of resources and reserves. Given the challenges confronted by those involved in defining the concentration and extraction of minerals and metals, there is a need to provide support to these QPs. To address these concerns, the CMP established a sub-committee in 2010 to create a set of guideline documents to assist the QP involved in process matters as to what should be included at the various levels of study supporting the establishment of resources and reserves in NI 43- 101. The results of the sub-committee work are presented and the considerations in the writing of the documents are discussed.

"This paper describes the development of a mathematical model for determining the liberation of an ore at various grinding sizes, based on the combined results of microscopic counting, grinding tests, and chemical analysis.The method is illustrated with an application to the magnetite ore of Sherman Mine in Temagomi, Ontario. For this ore, a degree of liberation of 98.7% was determined at a grinding size of 90% passing 44 microns, which closely corresponds to the final grinding size employed at the Sherman Mine Concentrator.Introduction Liberation characteristic of ores have direct and significant bearing on overall economics of concentration processes.Target grades and recoveries can be achieved only it minerals are adequately liberated prior to separation. Degree of liberation depends on the extent of size reduction. However, due to the high costs associated with size reduction processes, it is important to keep size reductions within limits of satisfactory liberation. Prevention of excessive size reduction is also necessary because of inefficient mineral separations in very fine sizes. Hence, a study of reduction size — liberation relationship is essential for optimum profit from milling operations.A number of procedures have been developed for liberation studies (1-12), but there is lack of method for universal adoption.A new approach is presented in this paper that might provide a realistic estimate of liberation and give a practical guidance as to the degree of size reduction required for satisfactory liberation."

"History of Whitehorse Copper BeltThe first discovery of copper on the Whitehorse Copper Belt is reported to have been made by miners on their way to the Klondike in 1897. By 1899 the district had been well prospected and many of the presently known deposits had been staked.The first shipment of ore was from the Copper King property in 1900. This consisted of 9 tons of hand picked ore grading 46.4% copper. It was not until the period between 1912 and 1917, the production years of the Pueblo Mine, that significant ore shipments were made. Total production was 140,000 tons at 3.5% copper. An underground disaster killed six men and closed the mine in March 1917.Although the general area was dormant until after World War II, by 1947 geological mapping, magnetic surveys and diamond drilling had been done on the important showings. In 1954 Mr. Aubrey Simmonds directed the formation of Imperial Mines and Metals, which acquired by option and staking a large part of the Whitehorse Copper Belt. In 1957 Mr. Arnold Pitt reorganized the company as New Imperial Mines. With financing from Sumitomo and Toronto-Dominion Bank, a mill was built and production was started from the Little chief orebody by open pit in 1967."

For a long time the Oil Industry has been looking for a logging tool which can determine the quality of the cement job behind casing. Older methods such as Temperature Surveys and Radioactivity Surveys might detect the presence of cement behind the casing, but short of production tests, it was impossible to tell that the producing zones were adequately sealed off from adjacent zones. A new logging method, which is called the •Cement Bond Log, operates on the principle that a sonic pulse transmitted by the casing is greatly attenuated when the casing is strongly bonded to an outer annulus such as cement. The down-hole tool consists of a source of sonic energy which is detected by a receiver situated a few feet away from the source. The amplitude of the detected energy is measured and the resulting signal transmitted to the surface where it is recorded versus depth. Amplitude is a function of attenuation and thus the log is readily interpreted.

Relationships of Noranda sulphide deposits to volcanic rocks are reviewed and chemical variations within the volcanic sequence are described. The assemblages of minor elements in the pyrites and pyrrhotites of the Noranda and l\llatagami deposits are similar and are characterized by a high content of cobalt, tin and other elements. Isotopic compositions of lead, other geochronological data and stratigraphically disposed zonal distributions of sulphides and minor elements indicate that the deposits were formed prior to folding and metamorphism. Lead isotope data indicate that the Matagami deposits, and several others, were probably formed about 2.95 x 109 years ago and that the Noranda deposits may be about 50 million years younger. The volcanic sequence at Noranda is younger than the thick sequences bordering it on the east and on the west. The relationships are consistent with the hypothesis that these strata-bound sul1>hide de-posits are coeval with their associated volcanic rocks. "Since the autumn of 1973, the world's attention was captured by the startling revelation that conventional energy supplies were not inexhaustible but were in fact quickly dwindling with future shortages imminent until lagging exploration and technology yielded additional energy sources to catch up with the spiralling increase in demand. This situation was precipitated by the Arab Oil Embargo and the resulting soaring cost of world crude oil.During the past few years there has been tremendous activity in the energy field which has had a direct impact on the Inca Metals Company Ontario Division operations. The company's reaction has been to establish an energy management program which will be described later in the paper. First, a brief description of the Inca Metals Company and the primary energy resources which are utilized will assist in putting the program into perspective.The Inca Metals Company, a unit of Inca Limited, is responsible for the production and sale of primary metals products worldwide. The company's operations in the Sudbury District include mines, ore concentrating plants, a Smelter, Nickel and Copper Refineries and an Iron Ore Recovery Plant. The Ontario Division also has a mine and concentrating plant in Shebandowan near Thunder Bay, and a metals refinery at Port Colborne. "Biological leaching can be used to enhance the recovery of gold and silver from refractory ores, concentrates and tailings. The method liberates precious metals associated with sulphide minerals such as pyrite and arsenopyrite making them amenable to cyanidation. The chemistry and features of biological preoxidation leaching is discussed. A summary of the results obtained on various ores, concentrates and tailings is presented.INTRODUCTIONRefractory precious metal ores in which gold and silver are finely disseminated in sulphide minerals such as pyrite and arsenopyrite are becoming more important to the mining industry. This is due both to a depletion of simpler, free-milling ores and to a significant increase in the price of gold in recent years. Whereas many ores can be directly cyanided with gold solubilizations over 90% obtained, the refractory ores respond poorly to direct cyanidation and require decomposition of the precious metal-bearing sulphide minerals to increase recoveries.Decomposition of sulphides by oxidation prior to cyanidation can be carried out by several means. The oldest method is roasting which removes unwanted ore constituents by high temperature oxidation and volatilization. In Canada, for example, roasting is used at Giant Yellowknife (Connell and Cross, 1981). Another method gaining increasing acceptance is pressure hydrometallurgy which uses aqueous oxidation conducted at high temperature and pressure. Homestake Mining Company have recently completed construction of a plant incorporating pressure oxidation at their Mclaughlin property in California (Guinivire, 1984)."

"SGS implemented two rules-based fuzzy logic expert applications on two grinding circuits operated by Peñoles Group in Mexico. Both expert systems are based on control strategies that push against process constraints to improve throughput. Based on proven methodologies, the projects also required some new approaches that led to permanent changes to the mill control strategy.This paper provides descriptions of the implementation, operation and performance of both expert systems. It also reviews how improved production rates were achieved through the use of a common set of expert technology tools. An overview of the resulting control strategies implemented on the two circuits is presented. The paper also discusses the identification of the process constraints within each circuit and how these constraints are used within the expert systems.INTRODUCTIONMexico-based mining company Peñoles Group and the Advanced Systems group at SGS, formally known as MinnovEX Technologies Inc., collaborated on the implementation of two expert systems in two grinding plants, both located in Northern Mexico.The primary objective of the expert systems was to increase throughput whilst still maintaining the cyclone overflow product size within an acceptable range. The secondary objective was to achieve a high level of utilisation of the expert technology.In order to achieve these objectives, SGS proposed a proven methodology which leveraged the existing operating and technical expertise at site through the client’s involvement in the design and implementation stages. The in-house operating and technical expertise of SGS was also brought to the project and implemented with the client’s approval at all stages. At both sites the final acceptance was defined upon meeting both process and utilization parameters.The development and deployment of rules-based fuzzy logic applications has matured as a technology and consequently, clear definition of process states and their place in the logic structure to control a given circuit are now transferable. The key to the robustness of the control logic depends on selection and tuning rules for maintaining stability and optimizing a given circuit. Application integrators need to have a standardized approach for timely integration and deployment; a critical component to avoid the common critiques that expert applications are idiosyncratic and difficult to maintain."
