"Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. – Mining Division, has initiated in the last ten years, six Mining Operations (Bismark, Tizapa, Ciénega, La Herradura, Rey de Plata, and Francisco I. Madero) and it has expanded several of their existing Operations (Sabinas, Fresnillo, Tizapa, Ciénega) one or more times.This work aims to share the experiences learned on this growing process. Some of these lessons are: 1) Project leaders must have a leadership that fosters good communication and team work; and this leadership style must come from top management. 2) A good communication must exist between the personnel from Engineering, Construction, and Operation. Also, this good communication must come from top management. 3) Starting the project with a solid Engineering Study. 4) Do not misunderstand cost with cost/benefit; always look at the cost/benefit. 5) Selecting good Contractors and good Suppliers. 6) Good training before the project commissioning is essential to reduce the learning curve period, this is even more important in areas where local people do not have any background in mining activities. 7) Recognizing that any project has a learning curve and it must be reflected on the production budget. 8) Avoid an over optimistic Mine preparation time schedule.BACKGROUNDIndustrias Peñoles S.A. de C.V.The mission of Industrias Peñoles, S.A. de C.V. "The role of flash flotation in precious metal recovery is reviewed. Interacting flash flotation and gravity recovery is discussed. The GRG test can be used, when linked to the behaviour of gold in grinding and classification units, to predict the recovery of GRG by flash flotation. The Cadia mill in New South Wales is used as a case study of circuit design, performance and simulation. It is shown that high throughput coarse grind applications such as Cadia require very effective fine GRG recovery systems in the primary grinding loop, which are more consistent with flash flotation than batch centrifuge concentrators (BCCs). BCCs can effectively recover a significant fraction of the GRG from flash concentrates, as predicted by laboratory testing and confirmed at a growing number of mill sites.INTRODUCTIONThe GRG test was designed to characterize Gravity Recoverable Gold (GRG) ten years ago (Woodcock and Laplante, 1993; Laplante et al, 2000), in response to the need to predict how much gold could be recovered from the main circulating load of grinding circuits using centrifuge concentration. The amount of GRG is not itself a prediction of gravity recovery: the performance of a gravity circuit nested in a circulating load also depends on the type and size of unit used, how much of the circulating load is treated, and how many times GRG is recycled and presented to the recovery circuit. The GRG test was first used in a simulator to predict gravity recovery (Laplante et al, 1995), and indeed most of the early tests targeted ores or prospective ores for which gravity recovery was an obvious match. As the test became more accepted, more and more samples returned a verdict that precluded the use of gravity recovery, or made it marginal. Typically, such ores are either copper-gold or base metal ores in which the GRG content is often fine (largely below 105 um) and ranges from 8 to 33%. Extensive simulation and plant sampling tests, either published (Laplante et al, 1997) or proprietary, show that full scale gravity recovery for these applications is generally below lo%, and can be as low as 2%. Not in all cases are such low recoveries economically unjustifiable, since there is documented evidence (Darnton et al, 1992) that a significant proportion of the gold recovered, at least in the case of base metal ores, would not have reported to the copper or zinc concentrate and received NSR credits."

"The need for production of a competent fill was recognized early by the project partners. Consequently, a 4000 Ud paste fill plant was constructed and commissioned in early August 1994.In order to fine tune the process without risk to the underground workings, a closed pumping loop was devised on surface. After two months of this exercise, the first underground slope was filled according to specifications obtained from the pilot plant trials.This paper will focus on the operational problems encountered and the solutions adopted so far, and on a comparison between expected and actual fill production and characteristics.RésuméLa nécessité de produire un remblai de propriétés mécaniques suffisantes a été rapidement reconnue par les partenaires du projet. Conséquemment, une usine de production de remblai en pate, utilisant les residus du concentrateur d'une capacité de 4000 t/j a été construite et l'opération a débuté au mois d'aôut 1994.Dans le but de roder le précedé sans mettre en danger les installations souterraines, l'usine a été testée dans un circuit de surface. Après deux mois d'essais, le premier chantier souterrain a été rempli avec du remblai en pate selon les specifications dérivées de l'usinage pilote.Cet article présente les problemes d'opération rencontrés et leurs solutions, en plus de faire une comparaison entre les résultats prévus et ceux actuellement obtenus sur la production et sur les charactéristiques du remblai."

"In 1998, the Iron Ore Company of Canada initiated an aggressive program to improve the performance of its Carol Lake Concentrator located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This program was termed the Concentrator Upgrade Program. The Concentrator Upgrade Program was a group of initiatives developed with the common goal of improving the overall process and operations of the IOCC Carol Lake Concentrator. The main goal of the program was to increase the annual production capacity of the concentrator from 18.0 million tomes to 21.6 million tomes. This gain in capacity was to be done mainly through improvements in process iron recovery. The target iron recovery value was 80+% versus a historical value of 70%. This improvement in iron recovery would translate to a natural weight recovery improvement from 44% to 50%.The Concentrator Upgrade Program provided the first opportunity in 30 years to make fimdamental changes to the concentrator flowsheet. To accomplish this, several pilot plants were built to evaluate new circuits. AAer 2 years, a new flowsheet was selected for the primary gravity separation circuit and the magnetite circuit. The centrepiece of the new flowsheet was the introduction of Hindered Settling Separators to the metallurgical process.The Concentrator Upgrade Program has since proceeded into detailed engineering and, as of February 2001, construction. The first one of IOCC’s 3 primary AG Mills (Mill 11) has been converted to the new flowsheet at the time of writing and is in the throes of commissioning. This paper will review the flowsheet development program in the pilot plant for the gravity separation circuit and examine the overall benefits to the operation of the IOCC Carol Lake Concentrator."

Hydraulic shovels are widely used for primary production in surface mining operations. Variability in material diggability, unstructured mining environments and limited space and operator inefficiency affect the performance of these shovel excavators. Dynamic models of the hydraulic shovels are essential for understanding and improving machine performance. This paper contributes to this subject area by advancing hydraulic shovel kinematics and dynamics using the modified Newton-Euler method. A virtual simulator is developed to simulate the hydraulic shovel performance in the ADAMS environment. The simulator is validated with data on shovel geometry and the physical and mechanical properties of a formation in a surface mining environment. The results indicate that a shorter digging time increases the shovel operating power requirements, and that the required peak power increases by 100% when the digging time reduces by 50%. Simulation results also show that a shallow trajectory facilitates the digging process, with 50% reduction in peak power requirements compared to a deep one. This simulator provides a powerful tool for performance monitoring, excavation process designs and structural optimization of hydraulic excavators. This work also forms the basis for developing comprehensive simulator models for automated shovel operations in constrained mining environments.

"A series of experiments were conducted to assess the impact of zinc additions on the morphology and soundness of the interface of Al-Mg compound castings. It was found that high amounts of zinc (>15wt%) are necessary to affect the morphology and microstructure of the interface. At these zinc concentration levels, the formation of the zinc-rich phases t1 and ? were observed along with the Al-Mg intermetallic phases ß and ?. The micro hardness of all phases across the interface was found to be similar, ~200 Hv. This even hardness gradient is thought to avoid mechanical failure in the interface under load. In samples containing large concentrations of zinc (>15wt%), the formation of bubble shaped voids as well as the complete transformation of the aluminium alloy was observed. While the exact mechanism causing the voids has not been identified it thought to be connected to the Kirkendall effect. INTRODUCTION Conventional single material components are increasingly failing to meet the demands, in terms of cost and performance, of the transport industry. Compound castings have been identified as a promising alternative as they possess a number of benefits (Bührig-Polaczek, Röth, Baumeister, Nowack, & Sussmann, 2006). Compound casting is described as a process in which a metallic melt is cast around a solid metal shape. Preliminary research has concluded that for the stability of such a resultant hybrid structure it is imperative that both metals form a sound connection via form closure, force closure, or material bonding. A continuous material bond between the two metals is also highly desirable as the formation of a crevice between the metals could lead to galvanic corrosion, particular in a humid environment (Lao, 2013; Rübner, Günzl, Körner, & Singer, 2011). Even though Al-Mg compound castings could offer the biggest potential in terms of weight savings to date only a limited amount of research concerning such structures exists."

The haulage cycle is the sequence which a haulage vehicle must first arrive at the loading area, then turn around and reverse into position. Once it is loaded, the vehicle leaves and travels to the unloading area, where again it must turn around and back up to unload. The cycle is repeated over and over again. The Vector Neutral truck is a rubbertired, self-propelled hauling vehicle designed such that it eliminates the requirement to turn around and back-up to either load or unload. Vector Neutral Truck Cycle: 1.) Travel from the load station to the dump station. 2.) Stop and dump load. 3.) Travel from the dump station to the load station. 4.) Stop and load. The Advantage is in the Difference: 1.) Shorter distance traveled. 2.) Fewer brake and steering actuations. 3.) Easier to automate. 4.) Easier to adapt for remote control operation.

A small number of mining contractors worldwide have evolved their businesses to be able to provide a ?total service solution? to their clients. Thiess, an Australian-based international mining service provider, works with numerous clients to tailor delivery methods and commercial arrangements to suit individual projects. The benefits of Thiess? extensive experience is brought to each client and project, whilst business improvement within projects, to the mutual benefit of both the client and Thiess, is a key part of all long term contract relationships. Historically, optimal business outcomes were closely related to the achievement of production and cost performance measures. Whilst these remain fundamental to successful mining businesses, other elements of sustainability are assuming increasing importance. As a large energy user, greenhouse and energy management is becoming an important part of Thiess? business. Thiess is a signatory to Australian government initiatives such as Greenhouse Challenge Plus, and is integrating energy management into its operations and business improvement programs, in many cases to the benefit also of the client. This paper will highlight the benefits that an organisation such as Thiess can bring to a mine owner. Thiess? approach to business improvement and cost reduction, sustainability and energy management, as well as the relationship between these will also be considered. Increasingly, overall mining performance is dependent on the alignment of formally disparate elements.

For many years, sulfuric acid producers all over the world have been forced to meet ever more strict environmental regulations to reduce SO2 emissions. The sulfuric acid industry has implemented new solutions in order to comply with the new lower SO2 emissions target. Haldor Topsoe (Topsoe) has responded to this challenge by continuously improving the range of VK sulfuric acid catalysts and providing tailor-made catalyst solutions to meet the demands of the sulfuric acid producers for lower SO2 emissions. Reducing emissions through catalysis: requires less capital than installing a scrubber, requires no additional process chemicals, generates no waste or by-product to dispose of. In 1996 Topsoe introduced VK69, a cesium-promoted vanadium catalyst, designed for operation in the pass(es) after the intermediate absorption tower in double absorption plants. The high activity of VK69 allows for a more than 50% reduction in SO2 emissions from existing double-absorption plants. Topsoe currently has more than 110 installations of VK69. To comply with the still more stringent regulations being placed on the sulfuric acid industry to lower SO2 emissions, Topsoe has developed a new sulfuric acid catalyst designated VK-701 LEAP5™. This catalyst was introduced to the market in 2010. VK-701 LEAP5™ is based on a novel technology which circumvents the internal transport deficiencies of existing commercial sulfuric acid catalysts and thereby offers exceptionally high activity in strong, SO3 rich gases. Sulfuric acid plants have used this catalyst to meet emissions requirements lower than previously believed possible with a catalyst only solution. This paper will present examples on how to reduce emissions by implementing a tailor-made catalyst solution using VK69 and VK-701 LEAP5™.

"There is a dire need of a technology which can break the mineral interfaces to enhance liberation with minimum energy consumption in mineral beneficiation processes. Understanding of mineral crystal system and interfaces is essential to develop such methodology. So, this study is carried out to find out the role of mineral crystallography in milling and liberation. Data related of mineral crystallography, Vickers Hardness Number, Bond Work Index and beneficiation processes were collected from literature and detailed statistical analysis has been carried out to establish a correlation among these parameters. It was found that atomic weight and cell parameters shown statistically significant relationship with Vickers Hardness Number of minerals, which controls the milling characteristics of ores. Liberation characteristics of five different kinds of ores were analyzed considering the types of interfaces between valuable and gangue minerals. It was found that phase interfaces play vita role in liberation and coarser liberation can be achieved in the minerals of incoherent crystal systems like manganese and zinc ores. Study of this subject can help us to understand the effect of stress wave propagation in solids and its effect on crystal interfaces. It can also help us to design a technology of future to break the mineral interfaces.INTRODUCTIONCommunition is energy intensive mineral processing operation and consumes up to 2% of the total electric power generated in the world. Energy consumption due to comminution is increasing every year as there is growing needs to exploit lower grade ore bodies and process rejects (Blazy et al., 1994; DOE, 2005). Low grade ores require crushing and grinding to liberate the valuable minerals which are further separated from gangues by various beneficiation methods like gravity separation, floatation, leaching etc. Currently, comminution methods are selected based on the reduction ratio and energy consumption but effect of grinding methods on subsequent processing methods specially on liberation also need to be studied to optimize the entire beneficiation process. Most of the attempts made in past to minimize the energy consumption in milling to enhance the mineral liberation were focused on compression mechanism, chemical additives, thermal treatment, microwave treatment and electric disintegration (Kilpelm and Austin, 1982; Norgate and Weller et al, 1994; Bearman et al., 1997; Kumar et al., 2010; Wang el al., 2011; Singh et al., 2012). But the role of mineral crystallography on milling and liberation behavior of minerals not fully explored yet."

HIGH-INTENSITY magnetic separation as now practised in the commercial treatment of a large variety of industrial minerals is a com-paratively recent development, having had its practical beginning about ten years ago when it became necessary to devise more effective methods for the purification of the electric furnace abrasives and refractories-silicon carbide and fused aluminium oxide. The fundamentals of magnetic separation are, of course, very well under-stood; bur while very, very old in principle, the process has, in recent years, been developed to a point of far greater usefulness than heretofore. In fact, until the development of the high-intensity process,. magnetic separation was limited largely to the removal of tramp iron? with magnetic pulleys and the removal of the very highly magnetic portions of industrial minerals by means of horizontal conveyor-belt-type separators. All magnetic separation processes depend for their success on the fact that various materials are kinetically influenced to a greater or lesser degree by the force that we speak of as 'magnetism'. We have now come to regard 'magnetic separation' and 'high-intensity magnetic separation' as two different and distinct methods. However, both depend upon the reaction of a particle when placed in a magnetic field. The common types of magnetic separators quite generally operate on the principle that a magnetic particle can be lifted by a powerful magnetic force from a stream of material moving on a belt or other type of conveyor. The application of the force removing magnetic material by this scheme is directly opposed to the force of gravity and is, therefore, limited to sub-stances of a relatively high order of magnetic susceptibility, such as metallic iron and magnetite. Until a few years ago, one very important principle was almost entirely overlooked. Practically every substance is susceptible to some extent, at least, to magnetic attraction, and by the application of a magnetic force great enough, and properly applied, separations of materials heretofore considered 'non-magnetic' can be accomplished.

"The relative-value (R-value), discrimination-factor (D-factor), and vector-ratio (V-ratio) method (RDVM) provides a geological knowledge-based statistical and geological-genetic interpretation scheme for geochemical data that enhances discovery in geochemical exploration. The practical advantage of RDVM is that it synthesizes geochemical features geologically related to ore-deposit discovery in three steps: reclassifying element concentrations using log-probability plots into R-values; calculating geologically defined D-factors from R-values; and determining V-ratios. D-factors are the sum of R-values, divided by the number of R-values summed. Based on the analyses selected, D-factors mimic rock or mineral deposit signatures. V-ratios refine interpretations of rock type and vector to orebody locations.RÉSUMÉ La méthode de la valeur relative (valeur R), du facteur de discrimination (facteur D) et du rapport de vecteurs (rapport V) (RDVM), fournit un schéma d’interprétation des données géochimiques basé sur les statistiques et les connaissances géologiques et la génétique géologique; ce schéma contribue aux découvertes en exploration géochimique. L’avantage pratique de la RDVM est qu’elle fait la synthèse des caractéristiques géochimiques reliées géologiquement à des découvertes de gisements de minerais en trois étapes : une reclassification des concentrations des éléments au moyen de courbes de probabilité logarithmique en valeurs R; un calcul des facteurs D définis géologiquement à partir des valeurs R et la détermination des rapports V. Les facteurs D sont la somme des valeurs R divisés par le nombre de valeurs R additionnées. Selon les analyses choisies, les facteurs D imitent les signatures de la roche ou des gisements minéraux. "The La Corne molybdenite-bearing veins, discovered in 1915, lie halfway between Amos and Val d'Or near the southwest corner of La Corne township, Abitibi county, Quebec. The Molybdenite Reduction Company, which carried on operations during 1927 to 1930, sank a 200-foot inclined shaft to develop the property and produced about 22 tons of concentrntes from a 30-ton mill during 1929. Hollinger Consolidated Gold Mines, Limited, carried on further underground exploration in 1930. The Molybdenite Corporation of Canada drilled a part of the property in 1938 to 1939 and produced 1 ton of concentrates in 1938. Wartime Metals operated the property from 1942 to July 15, 1945. At this time the mill was enlarged to treat 200 tons daily. Molybdenite Corporation of Canada since July 15th, 1945, have continued the operation of this property and have revised the mill flow-sheet in order to produce both a bismuth and a molybdenite concentrate.The production for the period 1942-1946 is as follows:Total molybdenite production from the mine in the 1942 to 1946 period was about 4,127,400 lb.The La Corne deposit occurs at the northwest contact of a small mass of biotite granite with biotite schist. The form and extent of the biotite granite mass is concealed by a wide sand plain that extends northwest and west from the deposit and overlies bed-rock except in four small outcrop areas. These are spaced 1,000 and 2,000 feet apart along a narrow strip extending 5,000 feet south from the mine. The outcrops suggest that the granite must be at least 1,500 feet wide and 3,000 feet long northeastward. Where exposed in the mine workings the contact dips 70°N.W., but is not a sharply defineable feature due to the presence of numerous granite dykes and tongues in a zone of biotite schist 100 feet wide along the margin of the granite. The biotite schist in the few outcrops that flank the north and south sides of the granite strikes northeast and dips 60° to 70° S.E."

This paper illustrates the techniques of network construction and analysis, and the application of the method at the Mcintyre copper mine to various projects in the gold mine. C.P.M.'s use in a mill maintenance project is also discussed.

"The following description of the geology of the Northern Empire mine is recorded by the senior author, but is based on the observations and complementary mapping of both authors.The Northern Empire mine is a mile east of Beardmore, and 100 miles northeast of Port Arthur, Thunder Bay district, Ontario.Production started in March, 1934, and terminated in September, 1941. The total number of tons milled was 425,866, from which 153,103 oz. gold was recovered. The lowest level from which ore was mined was the 1,900- foot, but considerable drifting was performed on the 2,075-foot and 800 feet on the 2,415-foot, the deepest level,The vein strikes about N.72°E. and has an average dip of80°S. In stoped sections the quartz averaged about 2 feet wide. On the 1,725-foot level it was drifted on continuously for more than 7,000 feet. In the mine as a whole, practically no commercial ore was found beyond points 1,400 feet west and 1,800 feet east of the shaft. Conspicuous wall-rock alteration extended throughout this section, but not much beyond these limits. There was some splitting of the vein and widening of the alteration halo on the lower levels. The average general colour of the quartz changes with depth .The vein is in 'Keewatin' lava flows, to which it is almost conformable. It lies only a short distance south from the 'Timiskaming-Keewatin' contact ( Fig. 2). This contact is marked by a black graphitic fault. So far as is known the fault is parallel, or nearly parallel, with the flows in strike, but dips at 72°S., which is 5° flatter than the average dip of the overturned flows. A post-vein, almost flat sheet of diabase about 550 feet thick cuts outthe vein from about the 650- to the 1,200-foot level ( Figs . 1 and 3). If it was intruded along a fault, the fault had only minor displacement. A strong alteration halo extends to 200 feet above and below the diabase. The vein was conspicuous but in large part it was below ore grade for 100 feet or more above and below the diabase.-"

Interest in monitoring nucleation overpotential in electrometallurgical processes dates back some 40 years or more. Conversely, remarkable progress has been made in recent years on describing in detail the processes involved in the formation of thin films by electrodeposition. The newer body of work underscores a need for greater clarity in speaking about the role of nucleation and in the acquisition and interpretation of nucleation overpotential measurements – the aim of this paper. In electrometallurgy, it is generally desirable to form deposits that remain smooth, compact, and relatively fine-grained while the deposit grows to a thickness on the order of 5-10 mm, about 100 times thicker than technological thin films. Hence, we distinguish two kinds of nucleation that can result in formation of new grains:- (1) initial nucleation (onto the substrate surface) of islands that coalesce into growing deposit, and (2) ongoing nucleation of new grains on the deposit surface long after the substrate has been covered and ceases to have a direct influence. Nucleation overpotential of the first type should be measured on an electrode surface truly representative of a real industrial substrate. The second type requires judicious choice of electrode material – an “ideal foreign substrate”. In general neither the industrial substrate nor native metal to be deposited is suitable for measurement of the second type of nucleation overpotential, because of interference by other processes. For the future, clear terminology is needed to distinguish these two types of nucleation potential. The second is the one for which the type of plot dubbed by Moats and Derrick as an “Adcock plot” and by us as a “Kerby-Adcock plot” was first conceived and correlated with relatively thick zinc electrodeposits. The data of Moats and Derrick showing trends for copper electrodeposition on stainless steel and on copper electrodes are interpreted within this framework.

"RÉSUMÉDurant les 10 dernières années, les améliorations dans le contrôle des limites des sautages et les arpentages après l’exploitation ont fourni des informations préalables et post facto sur les limites minières réalisées par rapport à la planification, plus particulièrement pour les grands chantiers exploités par les méthodes chambres vides et sous-niveaux. Cependant, peu de recherches ont été faites pour améliorer la délimitation du minerai, l’estimation des ressources et des réserves, les études de faisabilité et la récupération minière dans d’autres types de gisements. Il faudra d’abord expliciter les impacts des lacunes, en quantité et en qualité, de l’information géologique et de l’échantillonnage sur le rendement de l’extraction. Il faudra également remplacer la notion de « dilution générale » par celles de « dilution » et de « perte de minerai ». Les impacts des lacunes observées sur l’exploitation des gisements d’or filoniens sont démontrés par une simulation basée sur des résultats d’études antérieures à la mine Thompson d’Inco, des impacts financiers de densités d’information moindre et par des analyses des valeurs actualisées nettes (VAN) de deux cas types.Deux gisements similaires, de 3 m et 6 m de largeur et exploités par chambres vides sont étudiés, en prenant pour cas de base la délimitation sur maille de 7,5 m (25 pi.) et en étudiant les impacts des limites moins précises supportées par une maille de 15 m (50 pi.), en assumant que ces imprécisions moyennes de +/- 0,62 m se transforment soit en surestimation (dilution), soit en sous-estimation (pertes de minerai).Les impacts d’information moins précise ont été beaucoup plus forts sur le gisement plus étroit : autant la dilution que les pertes de métal ont diminué les VAN du gisement de 3 m de 39,27 % et 45,41 % respectivement, tandis que les VAN du gisement de 6 m ont été diminuées que de 12,84 % et 11,55 %.Ces impacts des valeurs actualisées nettes diminuées justifient et exigent des efforts plus systématiques pour s’assurer que les travaux de mise en valeur et les études de faisabilité soient réalisés de façon requise pour optimiser l’exploitation et offrir aux investisseurs des rendements compétitifs par rapport à ceux des autres secteurs industriels. ABSTRACTDuring the past 10 years, research work to improve the survey of stope limits after mining supplied useful information, particularly for large open and sub-level stopes, regarding waste dilution caused by differences between final production limits and planned stope limits.However, the efficiency of this information to improve the overall efficiency of the mining process is limited, given that the impacts of inaccurate ore limits leading to dilution (sensu stricto) and ore losses have not been considered adequately. Geological/sampling information should be optimized in terms of quantity and/or quality for the deposit characteristics and the constraints of the mining method used. As industry practice regarding the definition and recording of dilution is flexible and as ore losses frequently are poorly documented, the use of these terms is reviewed.Simulations were carried out on two typical narrow gold deposits, based on an earlier study at Inco’s Thompson mine regarding the impacts of wide to narrow delineation grids using recorded variations of vein geometry. Vertical to sub-vertical deposits of 3 m and 6 m widths mined by long-hole open stopes were considered. Deposits delineated by 7.5 m (25 ft) grids were taken as a base case and the impacts of less accurate limits in conjunction with long hole mining based only on a 15 m (50 ft) delineation grid. The impacts of overestimation (dilution) and underestimation (metal losses) were considered separately, using the average error of +/-0.62 m recorded in the Inco study.The impact of less accurate information was much stronger on the narrower deposit: both dilution and ore losses diminished the net present value of the 3 m wide deposit"

The characteristics of air bubbles and gas dispersion in KYF flotation cell are studied using the method of the point conductivity probe and CFD simulation. With increasing of speed, the velocities of air bubbles increase slowly and the distribution of diameters exhibits little change. With increasing of aeration rate, the gas holdup is increased. However, the velocities and diameters of bubbles have no great change. The CFD predictions on gas holdup have good agreement with the experiment results. The gas holdup distribution in the center section is revealed. The gas dispersion in the middle and upper part of flotation cell is uniform. It would be helpful for bubbles and solid particles collision. The gas holdup of the lower part of flotation cell is scarce, and it agrees with the observation in experiment. The gas would accumulate at the suction side of impeller blades, and it would decrease the power consumption. The rotating speed and aeration rate have great effect on gas dispersion. With increasing of aeration rate, the gas holdup of flotation cell will increase. The increasing of speed would improve gas dispersion. The results are expected to help to optimize the performances of KYF flotation cell.

Research thrives on ideas, and the theoretical considerations of today are either the discarded notions or the proven facts of tomorrow. The progress made in the past fifty years in the acquisition of knowledge of petroleum geology is no less astounding than is the tremendous increase in the production of oil on the North American continent from 61 million barrels in 1897 to 1,917 million barrels in 1947, an increase of 3,300 per cent, with production of natural gas expanding from less than 400,000 Mcf in 1897 to approximately 4,500,000,000 Mcf, or an increase of 11,000 fold in the same period. In the search for and discovery of the oil and gas fields that have yielded such prolific wealth, no idea has had a more profound effect than has the ?anticlinal? theory of oil accumulation, propounded in 1844 by Sir William Logan, the founder of the Geological Survey of Canada, after noting the position of oil seepages on the crests of anticlines in Gaspe peninsula. Sir William apparently was not much impressed with his own idea at this time, but after the Drake well discovery in 1859 and the publication by Henry D. Rogers, of Glasgow University, formerly of the Pennsylvania Geological Survey, of a paper in which he pointed out that the seepages in Pennsylvania were on anticlines, T. Sterry Hunt, an associate of Sir William Logan on the Geological Survey of Canada, published a reasonably comprehensive statement of the anticlina theory in the Montreal Gazette on March 1st, 1861. Hunt recognized the fact that the oil ?being lighter than the water which everywhere penetrates the rocks below the water level, naturally rises and accumulates along the crown of these anticlines". This was a recognition of the fact that gas, oil, and water in an anticlinal structure separate according to buoyancy or specific gravity. For some years the anticlinal theory does not seem to have attracted much attention, but when I. C. White in 1883 revived it and put it to practical use by prospecting for 'anticlinal' oil an gas structures in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky, its real value not as a theory but as a fact became widely recognized. Even today, the search for anticlines as oil and gas structures is being vigorously continued. In the past fifty years, however, it has become widely recognized that petroleum and natural gas collect in many different types of structures, and these have become known by the general name of 'traps'. About 1890, terrace structures were highly regarded because it was thought certain oil fields in Pennsylvania, New York, and Ohio were directly related to them. However, as Wilson (2, p. 437) has pointed out, it is recognized to day that ?'wherever the surface evidence is complete and dependable, other factors (than the terrace structure) are found to be in control'.
