As part of a long-term study of titanium minerals processing being undertaken by the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), techniques have been developed to measure the electrical properties of the various minerals. The measured values will be used to model the behaviour of the various minerals in high-tension roll and electrostatic plate separators. The resistivities of ilmenite, rutile and zircon from a number of Australian producers have been measured by applying a DC voltage across a test sample and measuring the resulting very small current flow. By appropriate design of the measurement cell and attention to the experimental procedure, reproducible resistivity values have been obtained, ranging from 106Ωm for ilmenite to 1013Ωm for zircon. However, the conditions of measurement are radically different from those under which electrical separation takes place. It is not certain that the measured values reflect the resistivities seen under high-tension separation, during which the particles are subject to a high intensity corona field. Consequently, an alternative technique for measurement of resistivity under conditions of corona bombardment has been developed. It is based on the experimental procedure of Castle and Yelle (1979) used to measure the resistivity of fly ash under the conditions occurring in electrostatic precipitators. This paper describes the development of the segmented ground plane measurement surface and a high-voltage switched resistor network which comprises the in situ resistivity apparatus. Results are presented comparing the measurements made under corona bombardment with those made using the DC measurement cell. The equipment has also been used to study the current distribution from a corona wire, as a function of high-tension voltage and wire-to-plane spacing.

The addition of cement to underground backfill at The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited, Broken Hill commenced in 1967. A deterioration in metallurgical performance at each concentrator occurred as a result, with increased loss of lead and zinc to residues. Investigations to determine the reasons for this problem and methods to counteract it have been undertaken. This paper outlines the effects of cement on lead-zinc beneficiation at Broken Hill and presents an interim report on attempts to overcome the metallurgical deterioration.

Radioisotope x-ray methods for the on-stream determination of copper, lead, and zinc in mineral product slurries were developed, and were successfully tested at the plant of Cobar Mines Pty. Ltd.The tests were made in three stages. Measurements to determine the precision of analysis were made initially on briquettes of the mineral products. The effect of slurry solids content variations was then determined by measurements on the mineral products in a recirculating slurry loop. The radioisotope analyser was finally tested in a series of on-stream measurements in the plant.Copper, lead, and zinc in flotation feed and in copper concentrate were determined to a precision ranging between 1·4 and 15 per cent of the mean element concentration in the slurry solids. These precisions are within limits required for plant control purposes at Cobar.

Last evening, in Auckland, I heard the Chairman of Heinz US, Dr Tony O'Reilly (who, in addition to Heinz's ownership of our largest food processor, also has substantial personal investments in this country), advocate New Zealand as a 'regional corporate capital'.   Why would someone like Dr O'Reilly hold that view? No doubt, as one of Ireland's great rugby players of the 50s and 60s, he admires at least one thing that we do very well (confirmed again in Dublin over the past weekend). But that's not sufficient to support such a view.   He cited many reasons for preferring New Zealand over, say, Sydney, Australia, calling this 'the most rational in which to locate [an] international headquarters', including û +         we have no capital gains tax; +         a more 'pro-business environment'; +         a 'first class' legal and banking system; and +         a 'simple political system'.   I can find no better 'text for today's address.

Hydrogen and carbon monoxide reduction data were obtained on pelletized materials of the type currently being prepared commercially in Australia.Pellets, approximately 1 cm diameter, made from Deepdale, Iron Prince, and Mt. Newman iron ore were reduced by hydrogen over the temperature range 500°-900°C and the reduced pellets were examined by thermogravimetric, microscopic, electron probe, and x-ray techniques. After an initial time delay it was found that up to 95 per cent reduction the data could be described by a porous model where gaseous diffusion through the solid is rate controlling. Independent measurements of effective diffusivity supported the values obtained from the reduction data. Above 95 per cent reduction the rate decreased markedly due to the formation of retained wustite or fayalite.Comparison with reduction by carbon monoxide over the temperature range 750°-900°C showed that the rate of reduction was approximately five times slower than for reduction by hydrogen.The rate of reduction was found to be a function of the initial properties of the pellets which may account for the widely conflicting results that have been obtained with previous investigations on porous pellets.

Raw materials account for over 60 per cent of the cost of hot metal production in classical blast furnaces and the principal cost component is cost of coke. Dependence on coke is a traditional weakness of blast furnace ironmaking and while efforts have been made to evolve alternative ironmaking technologies which do not use coke, such as direct reduction, smelting reduction, and the more recent method of making iron carbide, blast furnaces continue to be the most efficient means of producing bulk hot metal even today. Coal injection, to the extent of 150 - 200 kg/t of hot metal, has been one of the major innovations made in blast furnaces to decrease cost and to reduce the dependence on coke. This has, however, given rise to more stringent coke property requirements (which often means more expensive coke) - a `tail spin' of Sorts!

The early history of the mine is traced from the beginning of shaft sinking in 1886 to the purchase by the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. in 1949. A necessary preliminary to mechanisation of the Borehole Seam was development of the Young Wallsend seam, andthis development is described. Surface reorganisation and coal handling arrangements are dealt with in detail. Then follows a description of the Borehole Seam mechanisation, the provision of power supply for this purpose, arid pumping arrangements in themine.INTRODUCTIONStockton Borehole Colliery is in the Parish of Teralba, between the townships of Teralba and Boolaroo, and about 12 miles from Newcastle. The colliery holding, a freehofd area of 2,560 acres, was apparently an original land grant when acquired by Teralba Co-operative Coal Company who decided to mine for coal and named the mine "Teralba Colliery." Shaft sinking was commenced in 1886 but was delayed by financial and water troubles to such an extent that it was not until 1901 that the Borehole Seam was reached.Coal was won until 1904 using a single 16 ft. diameter shaft, ventilation being achieved by means of a wooden boxing down one side of the shaft. This collapsed, and operations ceased until the mine was taken over in 1906 by a company known as "Borehole Colliery Limited," the principal stockholder being the Stockton Coal Company. It renamed the mine "Borehole Colliery." This new company immediately commenced sinking a 13 ft. diameter air shaft. In 1908 the Stocktol1 Colliery at Stockton was abandoned, and during the following year much of its equipment was transferred to Borehole Colliery. "The White Mountain sediment-hosted gold deposit is located in north-eastern China. Mineralisation is associated with silica–hematite–altered polymict breccias that occur within dolomite at or near the contact with overlying sandstone. Economic gold grades are controlled by the distribution of the polymict breccias and can transition rapidly to low or zero grade over short distances. This results in sharp and highly irregular ore contacts on whose accuracy proper stope design and ore control is reliant at this blasthole underground mine.Short-term planning and ore control utilise a grade control model created from infill drilling and grade control sampling (ie face and wall sampling). Typically, the grade control model was maintained by time-consuming manual editing of earlier made contacts to incorporate any new data. This approach also was quite error-prone due to: the complexity of the breccia and ore grade contacts irregularly oriented and/or insufficiently dense drill holes inconsistent incorporation of grade control sampling. These errors resulted in unplanned dilution and ore loss due to inaccurate interpretation of the ore contacts.The primary advantage to implicit geological models over conventional, manually-built wireframe models is that they can be updated very quickly and frequently. In a mine setting, the power and efficiency of using an implicit model is greatest where the use of manual inputs or editing can be minimised. Recently a workflow was set-up for the mine geology team to create an implicitly-modelled ore shape for short-term planning needs by using all data, especially all grade control samples. The resultant 3D shapes provided metre-scale accuracy and consistently reconciled complex ore geometries much faster and to a higher degree of quality relative to the wireframe model.  The Southern Alps is an active oblique collisional zone which has a characteristic wedge-shaped geometry above a low-angle ductile shear zone. The Main Divide region is a relatively low strain zone above this ductile shear zone, and is _deforming principally along steeply dipping strike-slip faults. Extensional fractures are common at a high angle to the regional structural trend. These steeply dipping structures act as conduits for gold-bearing fluids from depth, and small mesothermal gold deposits have formed at several structural levels including the near-surface region. Gold has also been deposited in a meteoricmetamorphic fluid mixing zone near a conductive thermal anomaly on the western slopes of the mountains. These various gold deposits and their well-constrained structural and tectonic settings can be used as analogues for larger, deeper-eroded mesothermal gold deposits in the Mesozoic Otago Schist belt. High level Miocene veins in NW Otago have formed beneath the main divide of the initiating Southern Alps. Late metamorphic gold-bearing veins formed as fluid escaped from the ductile-deforming crustal root beneath Mesozoic mountains.

Hainan Province (Hainan Island) in South China hosts numerous Mo-polymetallic ore deposits that are genetically related to Cretaceous granitoid intrusions. Laser ablation inductively coupled mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) zircon U-Pb dating and molybdenite Re-Os dating reveal three metallogenic episodes: the late Early Cretaceous (ca 112 Ma), the late Early to Late Cretaceous (ca 95–106 Ma) and the Late Cretaceous (ca 72–89 Ma). The third mineralising episode might represent the youngest Mo mineralising event in East China. Results from this study demonstrate that Mo mineralisation on Hainan Island occurred under an extensional setting that was prevailing in the late Mesozoic (ca 180–67 Ma) in South China, which was likely due to the slab rollback of the subducted palaeo-Pacific plate beneath the South China continent.CITATION:Xu, D R, Hu, G C, Wu, C J, Fu, Y R and Chen, H, 2015. Drilling at Ipswich during the last twelve years by the Queensland Department of Mines has proved large quantities of reserves which have assured the security of the field for many years to come. This is perhaps the greatest contribution to the development of the field since its discovery in 1827.The drilling campaign commenced in 1950 and by the end of 1961 comprised 242 holes totalling 180,220 ft.Intersections of formations and seams, accompanied by detailed surface mapping, led to more precise knowledge of the geology of the field than was previously possible, and clarified many problems of correlation. Productive formations are part of the Middle Triassic Ipswich Coal Measures, a 4,300 ft sequence of fresh-water sediments with some interbedded volcanics. They are overlain by the Upper Triassic Bundamba Group and the Lower Tertiary Booval Group.Reserves disclosed by drilling amount to 171,487,000 tons, comprising 109,407,000 tons "measured" and 62,080,000 tons "indicated". The security of these reserves encouraged many collieries to instal modern efficient mining machinery and washing plants.The climax of recent development of the resources of the field will be the commissioning in 1966 of a £33 million 360 MW power station in the Swanbank district which will consume 14 million tons of coal during its 30 year life and will have a peak demand of some 20,000 tons per week.Drilling is continuing and is expected to prove additional reserves which will justify further development of the field.INTRODUCTIONUntil 1949 there had been no concerted effort to test systematically the resources of the whole Ipswich field. Fifty two known holes totalling 30,500 ft had been drilled, eight of them by the Department of Mines, but because of poor core recovery and inadequate records most of them were of little use in a comprehensive assessment.Development of the field was being retarded by uncertainty regarding reserves and by the general state of the coal mining industry. The Palaeo-Proterozoic Transvaal Supergroup in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa is host to the largest known resources of high-grade hematite ore on the Southern African continent. These ores are currently being exploited at Sishen and Beeshoek. Hematite occurances on the Sishen South exploration project (some 65 km south of Sishen mine), are at present the focus of an intensive investigation. At both the Sishen and Sishen South deposits, mineralisation is found within lithologies belonging to the Transvaal and Oliphantshoek Supergroups. The Transvaal Supergroup comprises a basal, carbonate platform sequence (the Campbell Rand Subgroup) overlain by thick units of banded iron-formation belonging to the Asbestos Hills Subgroup. The Asbestos Hills Subgroup is unconformably overlain by sedimentary rocks of the Gamagara Subgroup. The latter Subgroup has been correlated with the lowermost unit of the Oliphantshoek Supergroup. The Sishen and Sishen South deposits are located close to the western margin of the Kaapvaal craton and have been subjected to intensive, structural deformation. Both localities have undergone folding, faulting and thrusting. Early regional tectonism (2400 - 1700 Ma) played a critical role in the genesis and preservation of the ores from younger erosive events. At both deposits, four similar iron ore occurrences have been recognised. The ores have developed in specific depositional environments and hence display unique physical, chemical and metallurgical properties:The bulk of the high-grade hematite comprises laminated and massive ores, which are found in the upper parts of the Asbestos Hills Subgroup. The laminated and massive ores are best developed in basinal and pseudo-graben structures. Collapse breccia ores of medium- and lower-grade are preserved within deep palaeosinkholes. The sinkholes have developed within the dolomites of the Campbellrand Subgroup. Lower-grade conglomeratic and gritty ores constitute the remainder of the deposits. These ores are found in the overlying clastic succession of conglomerates, shales and quartzites belonging to the Gamagara Subgroup. Although, there are many stratigraphic and lithological similarities between the Sishen and Sishen South deposits, there are also important differences, which will impact on the profitable exploitation of the ores. The most striking contrast between the deposits is their size and geometry. Sishen mine is a single pit operation with an opencast mineable reserve of 895 Mt. The Sishen orebody is thicker, more continous and significantly larger than the Sishen South deposit. The Sishen South deposit has a potential opencast reserve of 228 Mt. It comprises a number of small and narrow, isolated orebodies, spread over an area of ¦64 km2 . There is a significant difference in grade between the deposits. On average the orebodies of the Sishen South deposit have a higher iron content (+0.25 per cent Fe), less potassium (- 0.090 per cent K2O) and less phosphorus (-0.019 per cent P). The Sishen South deposit has less interbedded shale in the laminated and massive ores. The footwall of these high-grade ores is a light-density, intrusive sill, compared to banded iron-formation at Sishen. With a proposed heavy-medium separation plant at Sishen South, the impact of dilution on product grades is expected to be less than that currently experienced at Sishen.

We have considered the following characteristics of the crust and upper mantle of the Pacific Belt: seismic wave velocity anomalies, mechanical stress and shear deformation rate fields, heat flow and the pattern of metallogenic provinces of the Belt. It has been noted that there exist certain .regularities in distribution of the above mentioned geophysical characteristics and metallogenic zones within the Belt, displayed by prevalence of the lithophile elements in the Asia-Australian part of the Belt, and of the chalcophile ones within the American part.

My selection of the Australian coal industry as the theme of this Presidential Address arose from the fact that it is one of our most important mineral industries. The industry is presently prospering.M.ore coal, mostly of better quality (except for certarn power-house types), is being produced more cheaply in terms of real money than at any time in the past, and exports overseas are currently at a highlevel.In. spite of this, concern has been expressed in certam quarters about the future of some phases of the industry; for example, there has been some public comment on the selling price of our coking coal to Japan, the possible over-export of our coking coals from New South Wales, the introduction of foreign capital to develop large-scale mining ventures in Queensland, and the proposed export of substantial quantities of coking coal from the same State.Furthermore, proposals for the introduction of atomic power plants into several States well endowed with reserves of coal have given rise to comment, and recently the Department of National Development(1968) warned that insufficient attention is being paid to "orderly development and careful husbanding of the nation's coal.To reach a balanced judgment on whether these views are well founded it is essential to make a broad survey of the present position of the coal industry in the Australian economy. I therefore propose to deal briefly with several aspects, and to comment, in particular, on the important subjects of exploration and research in progress at present on Australian coals.Detailed descriptions of the Australian coalfields are to be found in existing technical publications (e.g.. Gold-bearing veins have formed at a wide range of depths throughout the uplift history of the Otago Schist. The earliest gold mineralisation occurred during the later stages of Mesozoic metamorphism. This mineralisation was characterised by diffuse wall rock alteration with greenschist facies metamorphic or retrograde metamorphic mineral assemblages, and gold occurs in this altered rock. Quartz veins formed in .steeply dipping extensional fractures associated with this mineralisation type strike north to northeast. The Macraes mine exploits this deposit type. The present northwest strike of the mineralised zone at Macraes is a result of post-mineralisation deformation of the schistosity-parallel mineralised shear zone which hosts northeast striking extensional veins. This combination of schistosity-parallel shear zone and steeply dipping northeast striking veins may exist elsewhere in Otago, and this deposit type is most prospective. Steeply dipping quartz veins formed during post-metamorphic un-roofing of the Otago Schist strike northwest to west and occur as clusters of near-parallel structures in east and central Otago. These veins consist mainly of massive quartz, although some prismatic quartz occurs also. Breccia fragments in veins are common and these are generally silicified, with some gold. Wall rock alteration is negligible, and vein margins are sharp. A set of middle Tertiary veins occurs in northwest Otago. Most of these also strike northwest and dip steeply, but some strike northeast. These veins contain abundant ankeritic carbonate as well as quartz. The carbonate pervades adjacent wall rock as veinlets, but gold mineralisation is confined to veins. Quartz is commonly prismatic and vuggy, and contains gold, which is commonly coarse grained especially in silicified breccia zones. Associated veins contain stibnite. This vein type formed close to the paleosurface (>2 km). Mineralised veins in Marlborough currently strike northwest, but these have been rotated from northeast strike during Alpine Fault displacement of Marlborough from Otago. Some of these veins were formed under late metamorphic conditions and are similar to the north to northeast striking veins in Otago. As in Otago, this type should be considered to be most prospective if they have associated schistosity-parallel shears.

This paper aims to summarise the discovery of the QTS Central resource, a previously unidentified +1 Mt inferred resource that lies between two major CSA resource systems.The 1.7 Mt at 5.76 per cent Cu, QTS Central ore system represents 1/6th of the CSA mineral resource and was discovered in 2014 based on the accumulation of historic exploration records dating back to 1989.The CSA deposit consists of five ore systems hosted within turbidite-derived siltstones (CSA Siltstone) and lesser sandstones (five per cent) of the Devonian Amphitheatre Group. The host sediments strike approximately north–south with a steep westerly dip and exhibit a well-developed east dipping cleavage. Most CSA mineralisation is hosted within dilation zones at the intersection of cross-cutting structures and is interpreted as epigenetic in origin.Alteration and weak mineralisation, up plunge to the reported QTS Central mineral resource, was initially detected in 1990 during a downhole electromagnetic conductivity (EM) study, where one hole indicated an off-hole conductor, later tested with four diamond holes. One of these diamond holes intersected 3 m at 7.5 per cent Cu at 200 m. Development of the 9070 Subway drive in 2005/2006, linked the QTS North and QTS South workings and intersected structures interpreted to host QTS Central mineralisation. Subsequent drilling proximal to the 9070 Subway in 2007 identified an up plunge extension to the QTS Central zone (UDD07152: 1.8 m at 6.3 per cent Cu from 10.7 m). Work on QTS Central was largely forgotten until 2012 when the mining of a 450 m infrastructure drive provided a platform to test the anomalous grades. In December 2013, drill hole UDD13055A intersected 20.9 m at 7.2 per cent Cu from 378 m. By the end of 2014, the QTS Central inferred resource was 1.0 Mt at 6 per cent Cu and 18 g/t Ag (Hosken and Apaza, 2014). Late in 2016, further infill drilling occurred from two fronts to increase confidence in the QTS Central resource. The results of this drilling are expected late in 2017.The current interpretation indicates the QTS Central system consists of two main lenses hosted within closely bedded sandstones and siltstones. The sandstone in general is not mineralised, being heavily silicified, while the siltstone is mineralised and chloritised. The main mineralised lens is 75–200 m along strike and 450 m high. Massive sulfide feeder structures lie at the core of the two main lenses, although the characteristics of the QTS Central system tend toward the mineralisation being more chlorite-rich than in QTS North and QTS South.CITATION:Apaza, E and Neumayr, R, 2017. The minerals industry in Australia is currently regarded as the country's economic saviour; the bastion of economic security. As Fitzgerald (1974) stated, 'Australia's natural endowments in minerals are the envy of most countries of the world'. As a result the proposed new mineral developments are on a scale that hitherto in the sixties would have been completely un-envisaged. It is reported that Australia is poised on the verge of a 16 billion dollar mining-based investment boom: a boom that will see Australia dominate the energy export field, the mineral processing field, and create the 'coal dollar'. This growth scenario has many inherent dangers, and it is the authors' contention that these should be carefully considered before further development proceeds. Two of the major problems related to the mineral industry growth scenario are the predictability of the future metal market, and the energy cost of mining. The latter problem is the one discussed here. The mining-mineral processing industries in Australia currently use about 36 per cent of Australia's primary energy budget. This large energy input is dominated by two major industries, iron and steel and the rapidly developing a1uminium industry. These two combined use over 20 per cent of the total Australian energy budget. In an industry which is export oriented about 96 per cent as expressed in ex-mine value terms û much of the energy input is exported along with the product. The authors therefore urge that serious consideration by the mineral industry be given to the relatively high energy intensiveness of process operations, especially in respect of the aluminium industry.

If lead buttons are cupelled under closely controlled conditions in a suitable design of furnace, silver losses during cupellation are given by a simple equation. The effect of copper on these silver losses has been studied and a "copper limit" for cupellation has been determined. Scorification and crucible fusion procedures for copper-bearing materials have been designed so that the lead buttons produced will not contain amounts of copper greater than this determined copper limit. Silver losses during these crucible fusion and scorification procedures are given by the distribution law, and can be calculated. Thus, silver can be determined in copper-bearing materials with a satisfactory degree of accuracy provided that the appropriate corrections for losses are applied to the weight of the silver prill produced.

Straits completed its Feasibility study on the Whim Creek Copper Project in 1996. At this stage WCCP provided Straits with an open pit mine - heap leach - SX-EW copper project to follow on from its successful Girilambone Copper Operation (GCC). Since this time Straits has continued to review WCCP investigating a number of development and production scenarios. The development of Whim Creek, early 2004 and is on schedule to commence copper production in the final quarter of 2004. On current reserves Whim Creek will produce approximately 17 000 tonnes of copper cathode per annum for three to four years, at cash costs of The paper will cover a general description of the project, the project development and key design issues. Energy Savings and Technology Comparison Using Small Grinding Media Considering the complexity of minerals, the need for finer grinding is increasing along with the energy cost. However, energy is increasing exponentially when grinding finer with conventional grinding balls. The use of small grinding media represents the best potential to improve energy efficiency. Today, it is possible to use grinding media as small as 1 mm. How do they perform in industrial grinding mills? The use of small grinding media (5 - 12 mm), called Millpebs, in regrind mills proved that finer grinding can be achieved at lower energy consumption. In ball mills, energy savings vary from 10 per cent to 40 per cent compared to 25 mm media. A regrind ball mill with a mix of small grinding media can be as energy efficient as an Isa Mill charged with 2.5 and 3.5 mm beads. In vertical stirred mills, energy savings vary from 30 per cent to 60 per cent. To carry out the same final grind, a vertical stirred mill with Millpebs will consume at least 60 per cent less energy than a ball mill using 25 mm grinding media. More potential savings were identified. To achieve those improvements, some operating conditions must be met: 1) feed size should be less than 250 ¦m; 2) the pulp must be fluid enough; 3) finally, the slurry linear velocity should not be excessive. This paper talks about all those industrial results improvement and operating conditions.
