Many high temperature industrial processes involve gaseous halogen-bearing environments. Essentially, these fall into three subject areas: power generation, waste incineration and especially extractive metallurgy. Fundamental to any understanding of the process chemistry and efficiency in the process technology is an adequate knowledge of background thermodynamics relating to metal-chlorine reactions. In this context, existing free energy/temperature diagrams for metal chlorides do not include many elements, in particular the so called refractory elements from Group V and Group VI of the Periodic Table, namely niobium, tantalum and vanadium, and molybdenum. This paper reports estimation and calculations of the free energy values for these chlorides. The data is discussed in the context of high temperature chlorination processes.

Continuous processes must be shutdown and restarted regularly. Results from the study of operating plants showed potential value for computer simulation of the shutdown and startup of stirred tank leaching reactors. Simulation allows operational variables such as feedrate, and process variables such as the dissolution kinetics to be altered to establish trends in behaviour. Results are presented for the start- up of a cold, empty, single stirred tank reactor, in which three solids are leached at elevated temperature at steady state. Increasing the average temperature in the reactor during startup did not change the fraction of 'valuable' solid dissolved in the first product but it did increase the fraction of slow dissolving (impurity) solid dissolved.

In an earlier paper(l) details of a laboratory method of extracting and separating tantalum and columbium oxides from tantalite have been given. In view of the fact that Australia may have need to be self sufficient in this field it was decided to erect a pilot plant for the production of tantalum oxide in the Metallurgy School, University of Melbourne. The plant was designed for treating about 40 lb. of ore in a batch over a period of two weeks, although; because of the sectionalized nature of the process, the capacity of the plant was 40 lb. ore per week.Australia is fortunate in possessing some very rich tantalite and columbite deposits, particularly in the Pilbara District in Western Australia. The ore used in this work was obtained from a small but high grade deposit near Greenbushes, Western Australia, and consisted of lumps, weighing up to 8 lb. each, of almost pure ferro-tantalite with occasional thin veins of the very' rare' mineral stibiotantalite.The main constituents were:

Ore mineralization in Masara consists mainly of gold-silver veins, porphyry copper and pyrometasomatic deposits related to left-lateral movements along the Philip- pine fault system and a later stage of magmatism. These are hosted by pre-Tertiary volcanic flows and volcaniclastics, and comprise a temporal pattern of earlier peripheral copper zone, an intermediate mixed copper-gold area and a later central gold vein system within the Masara sector of the postulated volcanic field. Gold ore emplacement occurred in at least two stages, and shows gradations from a lower mesothermal-epithermal phase passing into a typical epithermal zone, and finally into a truncated, or poorly developed, upper level thermal spring deposit. Orebodies are closely associated with hot springs, solfatara and several magma- related masses, emphasizing their inherent linkage with a geothermal system in the Area.

Formation of porphyry-style ore deposits starts with the metal extraction from magmas at so-called magmatic-hydrothermal transition (MHT). The processes and compositions at MHT are difficult to study as the record of them is poorly preserved. As the MHT is characterised by massive crystallisation of quartz, including quartz æeyesÆ and veins, their study can elucidate questions related to metal transport and deposition. Quartz grains from the porphyry deposits all over the world (Antapaccay, Peru; Batu Hijao, Indonesia; Climax, USA; Panguna, PNG; Far Southeast porphyry, Philippines; Rio Blanco, Chile; Omsukchan, Russia) were studied by optical, SEM-CL and BSE microscopy, electron microprobe and LA ICPMS. Quartz grains, even within each sample, have different shapes (rounded, egg-shaped, amoeboid or euhedral) and cathodoluminesence (CL) patterns (shape, number and width of bands in CL images). The outer layers of quartz are markedly different, which is unexpected if the grains had formed in the same conditions. Inflections and blurring of CL bands are often structurally associated with fractures that are commonly healed with secondary quartz and associated fluid inclusions. Our results show that quartz æeyesÆ could not crystallise from a silicate melt as normal phenocrysts. It is likely that in situ segregation of residual SiO2- and H2O-rich liquid and its solidification followed by coagulation (eg formation of silica-gel globules) took place in the magma (crystal mush) during MHT. Such globules could remain in a plastic state for a long time even at rather low temperatures. The solidification of globules occurred after bands of different composition had formed and led to fracturing of solidified and inflection of unconsolidated layers. All fluids (liquid and vapour) released from the original silicagel during solidification were trapped as inclusions (aqueous, salt-rich and sulfide). An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The aim of the paper was to model numerically some aspects of the extraction of coal pillars by split and fendering. A two-dimensional elasto-plastic plane strain model with strain softening and interface mod- elling was used. The model was able to simulate the improvement of conditions experienced in lifting from the fender, when the roof adjacent to the fender has caved. In contrast, when a stook was left, providing support to a span of uncaved roof, the model pre- dicted the fender would suffer considerably more de- formation and strain.

German coal mining suffers from rock temperatures up to 600C which are the same as in South Africa at 3000 - 4000 m of depth. Therefore cooling plants have increased in the last decade and today a cooling power of nearly 200 MW is installed in the total Ruhr District. Cooling a mine is a little bit different from cooling a bottle of beer in a refrigerator in the kitchen because the heat taken from the bottle of beer is delivered to the kitchen some centimetres away; in mining the cooling-problem is more difficult: here the bottle of beer corresponds to the airflow at the coal face and the kitchen to the surface, So it is necessary to transport the heat or the "coldness" a long distance. In the address by Ieuan Morris some systems for transporting heat from the coalface to the evaporator of the cooling machine and further from the condenser of the machine to a return airflow were described. The following is a short idea of the way this problem is treated in Germany.

Detailed studies of mineral paragenesis, isotope and trace-element geochemistry, and physical mineralogy at Mount Morgan are compatible with deductions by Geopeko Ltd geologists concerning field relationships in the mine area. Considered together, field and laboratory data suggest that the Mount Morgan deposit originated from a shallow, intrusive, acid volcanic dome similar to those which produced the Kuroko-type deposits in Japan. At Mount Morgan, however, interaction with sea water was much less, the sulphides were concentrated rather than forming a group of deposits, and only the throat of a breccia vent is pre- served, so that only the lowermost parts of Kuroko-type deposits can be compared with the Mount Morgan mine. A final difference lies in the presence at Mount Morgan of a quartz diorite adjacent to the ore. Mineralogical data are compatible with post-ore intrusion, possibly up an earlier volcanic fissure.

The advancements achieved in rapid tunnelling in the 60's and 70's have been notable. It is unfortunate that shaft sinking has not enjoyed equivalent advances and there are many good reasons why this is so. Technical and commercial considerations have held back development and continue to do so despite the increasing urgency in the search for minerals and energy. By the careful selection of an appropri- ate project and the application of specialist engineering the Bdard took advantage of a unique opportunity to apply a mechanised shaft borer in field conditions.

Conventional blasthole sampling for grade control has acquired an extremely bad reputation for the last 50 years. The introduction of many sources of bias is a structural reality. Delimitation biases are devastating. Extraction biases are of great concern as well. Weighting biases aggravate an already bad situation. Furthermore, preparation biases are many. Some of these biases are due to the type of drilling machine that is used and are nearly unsolvable. Some of these biases are due to the sampling tools that are used and often unsatisfactory. Attempts to automate blasthole sampling at the drilling site have failed, not because it cannot be done, but mainly because it interferes with drilling productivity. As a result the miner most often rejects the idea after a few weeks of practice. Manual sampling of blasthole piles is a disaster for many reasons; some are related to the methodology, some to the selected sampling protocol, some to the training of operators, some to limited manpower available, and some to limited supervision. Furthermore, with blasthole sampling a time logistic problem is unsolvable as the miner wants the ore grade control geologist to make up his mind within two or three days at most; as a result not enough time is allowed for samplers, preparation facilities, laboratory, and resources department to perform a good job as everyone is working under unreasonable pressure. The economic impact of poor blasthole sampling for grade control has been vastly underestimated by mining companies. The resulting ore grade misclassification is responsible for severe reconciliation problems and massive financial losses every year. This paper suggests areas along this grim scenario where things can be greatly improved; however it is clear that too many problems are unsolvable. An alternative using reverse circulation drilling for grade control is suggested. A thorough analysis of the respective advantages and disadvantages for blasthole and reverse circulation drilling for grade control is presented in this paper.

Production scale experiment study was carried out in a limestone open-pit for testing the theory and method proposed by the author(Zou, 1987). The results of experiments indicate that the mathematical model and computer programs, which include the consideration of both the three dimentional distributions of the weak planes and the energy densities of explosion stress waves, reflect the physical process of rock bench blasting quite well. The predicted fragment distributions coincide well with the practical fragment distributions measured with the photo-image analysis method proposed by the author(Zou,1989). The paper "A Three Dimensional Mathematical Model for Calculating the Rock Fragmentation by Bench Blasting in the Open-pit"(Zou,1987), which was published in some conferences and journals, has interested some scholors and researchers. In order to test and improve the model, a group of production scale experiments were carried out in a limestone open-pit during 1986-1987. The procedure and results of the experiments are illustrated in this paper.

The rapid development of geometallurgy in the mining industry has occurred in relatively recent times. Its importance as an independent discipline in the mineral processing world has been emphasised and recognised. To a large degree, this is the result of a growing understanding of the ore type being processed and their application to provide better metallurgical responses in different mineral processing techniques. The development has matured from early progress through to geological knowledge and into the realm of the metallurgist and mining engineer. Working together, they have developed a powerful framework that will interpret a body of mineralisation into measurable properties.The integration of geometallurgy and operations has become of increasingly important due to improvement in understanding of an orebody as a natural system formed by a number of processes and with a definite fabric of mineralisation within different geological domain. These have to be taken into account when creating techniques that will enable operations to extract the valuable components from a distinct type of ore. Incorporation of such knowledge at an early stage of development, such as the feasibility stage significantly reduces the project risk.This paper is written from the unique perspective of a process engineer embedded within a geological team. Basic premises for evaluating special characteristics of gold-bearing porphyry metal systems stem from their contrasts with properties of the class as a whole. Included features are differences in geologic, thus tectonic, environments, subtle but real differences in the proportions of accessory metals Mo-Ag-Au that are regionally and within some regions, tempo-rally distinct, contrasts in the Ag:Au ratios, petrological-geo-chemical as well as isotopic differences between intrusive suites, the age and nature of host terranes, contrasts in alter-ation style, and zoning variations of mineralogical and physical properties of rocks. These properties are linked in various ways in different regions and suggest that in large gold-bearing systems where gold may be uniformly distributed, environ-ments of emplacement, and compositions or sources of igneous "progenitors" may dominate in importance over processes, and that systems in which gold is zoned are processes-dominant.

The Murray Basin is known to contain major deposits of heavy mineral sands and intensive exploration for new deposits is being conducted in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales. The western Basin was well served in the Pliocene and Early Pleistocene by a variety of appropriate sediment sources, and potential coastal traps. Immature, fluvially-sourced sediments forming the Pliocene coastal complex of the Marmon-Jabuk Range in South Australia are part of a marginal marine assemblage containing a suite of economically important heavy minerals that include ihnenite, zircon, rutile and tourmaline. From a consideration of Pliocene palaeogeography and coastal dynamics, specific targets where concentrating processes are likely to have operated are identified in the South Australian portion of the Murray Basin. Such palaeo-environments include the down-drift, littoral zone of discrete foredunes or coastal barriers, the source area for transgressive dune complexes, tombolo facies, and intertidal shoals and sandbanks. Similar coastal processes are recognised for a preserved Early Pleistocene barrier complex.

During devolatilisation, physical behaviour of coals was investigated in horizontal electrically heated furnace with an inert gas atmosphere, and gasification rates of four coal chars and coke were measured thermogravimetrically in a carbon dioxide atmosphere at temperatures in the range 1100oC - 1500oC. The volume change of chars was also measured in horizontal electrically heated furnace at various temperatures. Both reactivity and the activation energy for the gasification of coal chars were found to be strongly influenced by pore structure and the carbonisation conditions employed during preparation. CO2 reactivity of chars increases with increasing reaction temperature, and particularly increases more rapidly over 1300¦C. CO2 reactivity of coke is lower than that of non-coking coal chars in the range of 1100¦C to 1500¦C. CO2 reactivity of chars with smaller pore area and bigger pore diameter is less than that of chars with bigger pore area and smaller pore diameter. During gasification, the volume of chars did not change significantly at the lower temperatures of 1100¦C and 1200¦C, but at the high temperatures, 1300¦C to 1500¦C, the volume of chars quickly decreased due to ash softening and melting. The CO2 reactivities of the chars are controlled by the mixed control of chemical reaction and pore diffusion in the temperature range 1100¦C to 1300¦C, and by bulk diffusion in the temperature range 1400¦C to 1500¦C.

The tendency of the concentrate to ignite was studied using four techniques, namely, laminar flow furnace, fluid bed, thermal analysis and boat-in-furnace. Exothermic activity occurred at two temperatures: minor activity in the vicinity of 200¦C, major activity at 330-350¦C. The low temperature reaction was due to the ignition of a small amount of free sulphur while the major activity was associated with the ignition of the sulphide minerals, notably pyrite. To avoid ignition of the sulphide minerals, the gas temperature should not exceed 300¦C and the oxygen content of the gas phase should be as low as possible. It was shown that little of the arsenic in the concentrate entered the gas phase during drying.

The first stage in the refining of lead blast furnace bullion is the removal of copper and this is normally done as a batch process in open kettles,A number of attempts have been made in the past to establish fontinuous processes operating in reverberatory type furnaces, but the growth of accretions in the furnace has always presented a serious problem.This has been overcome in the plant of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty Ltd at Port Pirie by the construction of a reverberatory furnace and ancillary cooling system of novel design.Although a number of mechanical and metallurgical problems still remain to be solved, it is claimed that a workable continuous copper drossing process has been established.

In the Illawarra District of New South Wales, Mines were traditionally developed from the seabord. The advantages were close access to the working faces and a minimal depth of cover. Travelling times to the working faces have become prohibitive in many cases due to progressive westward development of the mines. As a result, additional vent- ilation shafts were sunk to service existing mines and new mines were established west of the Illawarra escarpment. Mining operations west of the escarpment are now being conducted at an increasing depth of cover and can be effected by gas related problems such as high seam gas emission rates and gas outbursts.
