Two of the problems long associated with the complete extraction of level pillars in the wide ore bodies of Broken Hill have been: (1) The high cost of maintaining level gangways through areas of slow subsidence to provide adequate trucking roads for the transport of sand filling; and (2) The difficulty and high cost of completely filling depleted areas. This paper deals with the experiments conducted to devise an apparatus for transporting, with the aid of compressed air, sandfill from the underground sand passes to the stopes and describes the sand blower which has been developed. This apparatus has to a large degree overcome the difficulties and removed much of the hazard associated with the rapid extraction of level pillars.Special attention is drawn to the sizing analysis of the sand and to the fact that it is not dry material. THE object that the writer has mainly in view in presenting this paper is to draw the attention of those connected with the technical side of the industry to the unsatisfactory and by no means up-to-date methods employed in estimating the tin contents of an ore. At the same time, what is regarded, from the writer's personal experience, as a satisfactory and reliable method is explained in detail. It is a curious fact that for the last 25 years tin·assay methods have made little or no advance, while those now in general use ill connection with copper and lead ores can scarcely be compared with those then obtaining, so greatly have they been improved upon. Though it. is not altogether expected that the method herein advocated will at once meet with general approval, the writer hopes the resultant discussion may bring out points that have hitherto escaped detection.FIRE METHODSThe old Cornish method of smelting with anthracite is now obsolete. A commercial Philips X-ray Fluorescence (X.R.F.) analyser was converted to an experimental instrument suitable for determination of the accuracy to be expected of X.R.F. on line analyses of concentrator slurries. Problems with stability of slurry sample presentation were eliminated by a number of minor modifications.By the use of multiple linear regression techniques instrument calibration equations including error terms were determined for copper flotation feed slurries. Results indicated that the accuracy of copper and iron analyses of flowing slurry samples could approach that of static pressed powder samples.Possible means of reducing the error terms to a level of at least that of pressed powdel' samples involve alternative methods of compensating for the per cent solids in the slurry, Design is under way for installation of a plant unit.

Experiments were conducted to access the feasibility of removing zinc from lead slag by sulfation or chlorination or both. Gaseous sulfation with sulfur dioxide and oxygen released only 50 per cent of zinc even under the most severe conditions. Sulfation with concentrated sulfuric acid by a fast-leach process released 95 per cent of zinc while pug-roasting released a maximum of 78 per cent of zinc. Chloridization with NaCl in the presence of sulfating gas released 50 per cent of zinc, while direct chlorination with chlorine gas and oxygen released 85 per cent of zinc and 100 per cent of lead in a chloride condensate containing little impurities.

The case study has identified and characterised additional subsidence arising from longwall mining above or under existing longwall goaf. It suggests that the magnitude, mechanisms and prediction methods for such additional subsidence are different between the two mining configurations. This paper presents a proposed method to predict maximum vertical subsidence due to longwall mining under existing longwall goaf. It suggests that, unless different results from further new cases become available, the findings presented in this article, including the aforementioned prediction method, be applicable to the majority of sites in New South Wales, where multi-seam longwall mining is to take place. This article also presents an important concept of 'overburden modification' due to multi-seam mining. A causal relationship between the above-mentioned additional subsidence and 'overburden modification' has been identified as a result of the case studies. Further investigations into the physical processes that cause such overburden modification will be fundamental to the understanding and management of multi-seam subsidence.

An evaluation of a pilot scale Delkor horizontal belt filter at Bellambi's South Bulli Colliery showed high productivities and low moisture contents for a range of feed slurries. When treating flotation concentrate, a productivity in excess of 1000 kg/m2/hr (dry) at a moisture content of less than 22 per cent was obtained. The results indicated the belt filter had a capacity twice that of conventional drum or disc filters, and was capable of dewatering a very fine, thickened, classifying cyclone overflow slurry to an acceptable moisture content. The superior performance of this filter is discussed in terms of the factors influencing cake formation and the stratification of solids in the filter bowl of a conventional rotary vacuum drum filter.

The selection of the mining fleet can have as much of an effect on the efficiency and effectiveness of an operation as the mining method. This is not to say that inefficiencies are only attributable to inappropriate equipment selections, these aspects have many factors but are not the subject of this paper.This paper will give an overview of equipment selection processes that have been utilised to date. It will also look at the increase in application of study programs/simulations from an aspect of accuracy, as well as the importance of enabling the analysis of multiple sensitivity scenario planning. An aspect that is increasingly important in project planning with commodity market movements.Another aspect that is increasing in popularity is that of automation, what effect does this have on equipment selection? What additional aspects need to be taken into consideration when assessing Automation of equipment from the beginning of a project as well as introduction into an operating mine?Once the selection process has been finalised and equipment implemented, how do we, as an industry, 'close the loop' through analysis of estimated versus actual equipment application?

Construction of cave mining systems requires significant capital expenditure and long-term commitment of human, equipment and material resources before production commences. Risks and uncertainties of these large-scale mining projects are significantly higher than for small-scale projects. This is due to the complexity and interactions of the construction schedule components and the large scale and uniqueness of such projects. One way to successfully manage construction uncertainties that would lead to schedule delays is to include a reasonable cost contingency in the budget estimation. A real options approach based on the least-squares Monte Carlo (LSM) method is used to estimate cost contingency associated with schedule uncertainty in mass mining projects. Cost contingency is estimated as the cost of potential project crashing (acceleration) decisions, which pays for not extending the schedule. While such a significant undertaking is expected to be subject to some delays, these can have an enormous impact on the economic value of such projects. The value of the crashing option was explicitly formalised into the process of valuation, as it is assumed to be a single option being considered in the valuation at every decision point prior to the construction completion date. As a part of the proposed method, a stochastic function for the percentage of remaining scope of work for the remaining duration of the entire project was integrated into a framework of numerical simulations. This ensured that this function can implicitly account for sources of schedule uncertainties for projects represented by multiple and overlapping work packages. The LSM method was applied to a real case scenario in an operating block cave mine, with modified scale and features. The results yielded by the LSM method indicated that significant changes in capital budget allocation stem from variation in a contractor’s risk perception and confidence level of estimated delays.CITATION:Ahmed, H M and Dunbar, W S, 2016. In an underground mine, different mining activities such as undercutting and cave progression generate redistribution in the present in situ stress field, and these changes are represented in the rock mass through induced seismicity.In order to study and analyse the induced seismicity generated in El Teniente, a block model was developed to account for the dissipated seismic energy through different areas of the mine from 1992 to 2015. More than 2.1 million seismic events were unified and classified in 3D in order to be used for the interpolations. The resultant model variables account for the accumulated energy releases in a monthly time resolution, and provide the ability to intersect different 3D entities with the stored information in the blocks, and estimate the energy evolution inside these entities.The generated model was used to analyse the geotechnical variables that determine the seismic response for the rock mass in the mine, such as geometry and direction of advance of the undercut fronts, lithological domains, and to study the ‘work’ the rock mass needed to go through in order to generate caving in areas with different stress settings.A specific area of the mine under high-stress conditions was analysed by studying the seismic energy associated with two subsidence caves interacting around the project, the modelled lithology. A study of drilling data at various stages of development of an orebody show that the semi-variogram, used for calculating the accuracy of block estimates can be ill-defined if too few data are available. The consequencesin this case are to have blocks supposedly more accurately known than is possible at the early drilling stage; such a result being potentially dangerous. However, as the amount of data increases the recalculated, semi-variograms approach the underlying semi-variogram of the deposit and the calculations made using them become more reliable and robust.

Numerous supergene manganese oxide deposits are developed inSouth China as a result of weathering of a thick sequence of Paleozoic marine Mn-bearing sedimentary rocks, consisting mainly of limestones, cherts and black shales that were intensely folded and faulted due to multiple episodes of tectonism since the late Triassic. The ore minerals are dominantly pyrolusite, cryptomelane, nsutite, lithiophorite and braunite. The supergene manganese ores contain Mn ranging from 20 to 44 wt per cent; manganese oxide deposits derived from cherts and black shales also contain recoverable levels of Co, Ni, Cu, Pb and Zn. 40Ar/39Ar dating of potassium-bearing manganese oxides reveals that extensive supergene manganese ore formation started at least in the earliest Miocene and persisted to the Present. Ages of the deposits show a close correlation to tectonic stability, with the oldest in tectonically quiescent areas and the youngest in active areas that have subjected to continuous uplift and thus significant denudation. The prolonged wet and hot climate since Oligocene and the balance between weathering and erosion, which is parameter to the tectonic stability, are the ultimate controls on the formation and distribution of South China supergene manganese oxide deposits. Powder metallurgy has been developed rapidly in the last twenty years by overseas metallurgists. The technique of making the powders and their subsequent pressing and sintering into useful forms has' only been introduced into Australia under the stress of war-time economic conditions.The technique involved has very little in common with our usual methods of fabricating engineering alloys by melting the ingredients to a homogeneous mass, followed by casting to shape or casting to ingot form and shaping by application of pressure-so-called mechanical working. On the other hand, the technique includes operations, such as milling and sizing, familiar to the primary metallurgists.The compacting of metal or other powders finds important application in two outstanding fields of engineering production: (a) in making porous bearings and contact brushes, in which such a material as powdered graphite can be incorporated; (b) in making cutting tool tips of hard -carbides, which have a melting point too high to make casting feasible, and which would be too brittle in the cast condition in any case. In both these cases; the final article can be made of the desired shape and size (subject to shrinkage allowances) whilst the compact is in a soft and readily machined condition a consideration of great importance in connection with the hard carbides.In order to develop the necessary equipment and technique and at the same time to assisil in the war effort, it was decided to divert the research work of the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne to the problems associated with the production of hard carbides from local raw materials and the sintering of such into tips for cutting tools. Since this work was started at least two industrial concerns have started to produce these materials in the Commonwealth.The work. to date has included (a) the purification of crude cobalt oxide from Risdon and the reduction of this to metal Particles of less than 10 p. diameter; (b) the production of tungsten powder from King Island scheelite and its conversion into tungsten carbide with particle size less than 4 p. diameter; (c) the sintering of the latter product, using the former as a bond; (d) the production of titanium carbide from titanium dioxide; (e) the separation of columbium and tantalum oxides from a Northern Territory tantalite, and the conversion of these into the respective carbides.

One would anticipate that after 40 years in the mineral industry it would be simple to project the trends at least 5 or 10 years into the future. However the last 20 years, 1950-1970, have been so different in the mineral industry from the years 1930-1950 that I suggest only 20 years or so are relevant to any forward projection.Those, of us that have been about during the last 40 years find it hard to relate the two periods.The first with the depression, low base metal prices, attempts to revive the gold industry, very little export of minerals, and finally World War II and the recovery period.The second, a period of unimagined discoveries and the reappraisal of a wide variety of minerals and metals-iron, coal, bauxite, beach sands, manganese, oil and gas, and nickel, to name but a few.The second period started early in the 1950s and was triggered off by the search for oil in Australia.Rough Range No. 1 was an important milestone in our history because it initiated a series of speculations and the re-examination of much of our thinking about our mineral resources. It lead to the discovery of bauxite and the start of a flourishing aluminium industry.The realization of the extent of the iron ore resources was another, major step and the influx of overseas capital and competence started the large wave of development made effective by the Japanese markets.The momentum of the late 1950s has carried us to where we are today and will undoubtedly carry us further forward in the next few years.All this development in the mineral industry has come at a time when our pastoral industries have reached a difficult period. In North-West Nelson the Riwaka Complex, a linear basic intrusive complex, is exposed for approximately 45 km. Some 500 km south, across the Alpine Fault, a linear zone of similar but less well known basic intrusives that may be correlatives of the Riwaka Complex is exposed discontinuously for about 80 km. The Complex was emplaced at several centres along a major tensional fracture zone that developed in upper Carboniferous to Lower Permian time. This fracture zone probably formed in response to the development of a west dipping subduction zone that gave rise to the Permian volcanic arcs in east Nelson and western Southland. The Riwaka Complex contains three rock suites. The Fractionation Suite, characterized by cyclic mineral layering and small scale cumulus banding is the largest and is divided into the Ultramafic, Hornblende and Plagioclase Series, each of which is subdivided into several units. The Cumulus Gabbros represent a restricted but important suite of unusual composition, while the third suite is the late phase Diorite Suite. Except in the lower units of the Ultramafic Series sulfide mineralisation is widespread. Pyrrhotite is the dominant sulfide with lesser chalcopyrite pentlandite and pyrite. Four significant zones of sulfide accumulation are recognised and discussed in some detail. Evidence suggests that the primary magma from which the Riwaka Complex was derived was sulfur deficient. It is concluded that the sulfur content of the Riwaka Complex was derived from assimilation of sulfur rich wall rocks during intrusive processes.

All mining and quarrying operations that employ blasting to fragment and move broken ground have a price to pay for æby-productsÆ such as vibration and noise. These æby-productsÆ cannot be eliminated but they can be controlled and modern blasting techniques have improved to the point that excessive environmental restrictions can be adhered to whilst maintaining acceptable production rates and quality. Accurate measurement is the key to control, and as the environmental limits are becoming tighter, the proper way to measure vibrations from blasting operations becomes an integral part of the mining or quarrying operations. The basic vibration monitoring system consists of a primary sensor connected to a data logger and computer software for the analysis of the signal received and recorded. Currently, as with all fields of measurement, much improvement has occurred over the past decade, and electronic devices are much more accurate and reliable. Data analysis has also improved considerably with the computing power that is available to field operatives today. Mounting the primary sensor has been often overlooked in supposed æstandardsÆ with procedures such as double sided tape, resting on a flat surface provided the vibration level is less than a given amount. But if it is worth going to the expense of the monitoring equipment and manpower, surely it is worth a little extra effort to ensure the primary sensor is coupled to the ground effectively. The primary sensor must move with the ground and measure this movement; so if the primary sensor is allowed to move without respect to the ground (ie poor coupling to the ground) then a false record of the physical event will be measured. This scenario can easily be a practical reality if the primary sensor coupling method to the ground is not effective. In this study a number of mounting methods were fabricated and connected to similar data monitors and a series of ænormalÆ production blasts were used as the vibration source. These mounting devices were measured against an in-house procedure (the æstandardÆ) and the relative merits compared. A laboratory investigation was also carried out to look at the physical parameters of the æsoil and their effect on vibration attenuation of the in-house standard method.

Renison Bell is on the Emu Bay Railway, midway between Zeehan and Rosebery on the west coast of Tasmania. The tin deposits in this area have been described by G. A. WaIler (1902), L. K. Ward (1909), H. Hermani (1914), and Hartwell Conder (1918), for the Tasmanian Geological Survey. The ore-bodies occur in the slates, grits, altered lava flows and tufts of the Dundas Series, and consist of fine-grained cassiterite disseminated through massive sulphides (chiefly pyrrhotite or pyrite), or through bodies of quartz and sulphides. Some of these bodies show a N.W.-S.E. strike, parallel to the strike of the tin belt, but others strike N.E.-S;W. or E.-W.The ore-bodies are of two types: (1) steeply dipping fissure veins,' spoken of locally as "feeders," and (2) flatter-lying bodies more or less conformable with the bedding planes of the slates (bedded veins), spoken of locally as "floors."The feeders range from 5-12 ft. in width, with occasional bulges as great as 4q ft. Their lengths vary from 100 ft. to several hundred yards, and they are known to continue to Clmsiderable depths. 'They dip steeply, generally at angles of 45° to 60° to the east or south.The floors, where they occur, 'are directly connected with the feeders, and are sheet-iike bodies of sulphide ore. The composite ore-bodies thus have the shape of an inverted L, or a T, according to whether 'the floor extends out from one side or both sides of the feeder. Most of the floors extend from the hanging-wall side of the feeder. Where erosion has removed the connection, they appear as separate bodies.The feeders as a rule carry more quartz and arsenopyrite than the floors, and are richer in tin. In addition, the cassiterite tends to be coarser grained in the feeders than in the floors. The floors, on the other hand, carry a greater proportion of -sulphides, chiefly pyrrhotite, and the grade of ore and grain size of the cas,siterite tend to decrease as the floor is followed down the dip away from the feeder, so that the outer and lower extremities of the floors may be too low-grade to work economically. The average grade of the ore worked at present is 0·9,0/0 tin. The slates forming the roofs of the floors are commonly much contorted and silicified,' so that they form hard rocks in which the contortion and shattering of the original slates are well preserved. Joints extending upwards, more or less at right angles to the roof of the floor, are occasionally filled with finely crystalline quartz, similar to that in the orebodies, and are often rich in tin, so much so that the slate as a whole may average 0·4% tin.Some carbonate gangue is present in all of the ore-bodies, commonly on the footwall side, and, in places it becomes an important constituent...

Low-level aeromagnetic data available in digital form have been combined to produce a new 1:100 000 scale map of total force anomalies of the Coromandel region, New Zealand. The map incorporates data from 13 surveys flown between 1977 and 1990 and shows the regional magnetic pattern as well as more detailed localised anomalies. In addition to magnetic anomalies, the map also depicts data to aid interpretation, including small-scale maps of topography, geology, magnetic intensity gradient and apparent magnetisation. The primary magnetic anomalies of the Coromandel region are associated with Late Miocene and Pliocene volcanic rocks, but have been locally modified by intense hydrothermal alteration caused by geothermal activity. Epithermal gold-silver and porphyry copper deposits are associated with zones of hydrothermal alteration. The map of magnetic anomalies can be used as an aid to mineral exploration and the interpretation of the processes that control the distribution of mineral deposits in the region.

This paper describes model-scale bench blasts on mortar blocks with distorted drill hole patterns, done in 2013–2014 at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben. The main aim of the project is to see if the fragmentation from and the crack development behind blasts with and without drill hole deviations differ significantly.The dimensions of the test blocks were 660 × 280 × 210 mm (L × W × H). They were mounted inside a yoke that allows the blast waves to escape (see Figure 1). Three rows in each block were shot row by row with a nominal pattern of B × S = 70 × 95 mm. The same nominal delay 73 µs (ie 1 ms per m burden) between holes was used throughout. Blocks with holes of stochastic collar position errors (variations in burden or in burden and spacing but constant row volume) and systematically shifted collar positions (blasts with staggered pattern) were shot. The results were compared to reference blocks without collar deviations.Apart from the sieving analysis, the remaining bench faces were measured with a stereo-photogrammetric method and horizontal roughness profiles for each row were constructed. Sawing slabs from block remains after the third row and use of dye penetrant allowed the study of internal blast damage.The analysis showed that none of the changes in borehole collaring had a significant effect on the sieving curve (median). The sieving results confirm earlier findings though that the fragmentation gets finer with the number of rows shot, implying that blast damage from earlier rows has an influence on the blasting results. The tests demonstrated that the nequiv (equivalent n-value) has increased ten per cent by shooting staggered pattern and decreased by seven per cent by pattern with burden and spacing errors. For the rest of the patterns, the nequiv was roughly the same.The surface roughness investigation showed that a smooth surface was achieved by the staggered pattern. The other deviations patterns did not show a clear trend.The internal blast damage, which was measured in the remaining part of blocks, showed that out of eleven, four crack families seemed to be most affected by blasting. No iron ore deposits were reported before 1961 from the Hamersley Ranges, Western Australia, although low-grade bedded iron formations, associated with ferruginous jaspers and cherts, were known to occur in the local Nullagine Series of Precambrian age.In January-March 1961 preliminary investigations in the area drained by the Turner River, Duck Creek and Serpentine Creek revealed the presence of over 1000 million tons of dense botryoidal or pisolitic limonite, forming flat-lying orebodies with 50-57 per cent iron.Large bedded hematitic orebodies were also discovered in the same area in August-October 1961. These have a porous, biscuity texture and an iron content of 60-61 per cent. They occur at a welldefined stratigraphic level (Brockman Iron Formation), normally in synclines where they have been upgraded by circulating meteoric waters during an old cycle erosion.In 1962 systematic geological studies and mapping, together with sampling and scout drilling, indicated larger reserves of biscuity hematitic ore and led to the discovery of massive hematite deposits at Mt. Tom Price. These were extensively drilled in 1963, proving the persistence of' high-grade mineralisation to a depth of 200 ft and over.To date the total indicated reserves of the Hamersley deposits, within the area held by Hamersley Iron Pty. Limited, are of the order of 4960 million tons and thus rank among the more important of the world. The reserves are composed of 600 million tons of bedded dense hematite ore with 64-66 per cent iron, 2900 million tons of bedded biscuity hematite-limonite with 60-61 per cent iron, 1360 million tons of limonite (goethite) ranging in grade from 50 to 57 per cent, and 100 million tons of canga (conglomerate) iron ore containing 53-63 per cent iron. In all cases harmful impurities are comparatively low.
