Hypogene alteration zones have been described as a precursor to high-grade haematite deposits in Australia, Brazil and elsewhere. This alteration is described as being below or distal and is typically magnetite-carbonate-silicates reflecting Mg - Fe metasomatism. This paper describes, without genetic implication, the mineral zonation and possible structural control on mineralogic variation within the Tilden Mine, a concentrating grade haematite deposit in Michigan, USA. In contrast to the high-grade deposits, these variations are not peripheral to the orebodies but are the ore. The deposit occurs within the Negaunee Iron Formation, along the southern margin of the Paleoproterozoic Marquette Range Supergroup basin. The regional structure is a fault-bounded west plunging syncline within the crustal scale Great Lakes Tectonic Zone, which forms the boundary between Archean granite-greenstone and gneissic terranes. Local structure consists of second-order anticlines and synclines with variable northwest and southwest plunges. The interaction of sedimentation and diagenesis within growth fault controlled basins, along with a possible metamorphic and/or hydrothermal overprint has resulted in a complex series of ore types. For modelling purposes, the deposit is divided into geologic domains based on both lithology and metallurgical response in the laboratory and in the plant. Mineralogic variation is recognised within individual mineral grains; at blast pattern (10 - 15 m) and development drill hole (100 m) scales.

At the second Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress held in 1927, the Empire Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions was formed and it was proposed that the Council take steps to prepare a "Review of the Mineral Resources and Industries of the Empire." At the third congress in 1930, it was resolved that the proposal to institute the review should be submitted to the Imperial Conference held in 1930. This was done, and the Minerals Committee, of the Imperial Economic Committee compiled, an interimreport which was based on statistics of imports and exports, and did not consider resources and consumption.In 1942 the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, London, wrote to the Empire Council and stated that it was desirable that the Council should be in a position to take part in decisions affecting the future of the mining and metallurgical industries. The Council communicated with the constituent Institutions regarding the nominations of two members then in England. Subsequently the Mining, Geological and Metallurgical ,Institute of India prepared a review of the mineral resources and industries of India and their post-war development, and the Empire Council forwarded a copy to the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and asked if that Institute would submit a review on simjIar lines for Australia. There is a vast amount of geotechnical data, which can be obtained during exploration programs at new and existing mine sites. Additional information on the performance of the in-situ rock mass can be obtained from bore cores, which are usually only geologically logged and then stored. A computer based data management system for storage and retrieval of geotechnical data has been developed to access and manipulate such data.

Mineralogical, chemical, and isotopic data have been obtained for samples from 11 volcanoes and 4 kortlandite intrusives on Kamchatka.Similarities and differences in ore-bearing and barren intrusives are discussed. Mining projects draw together stakeholders with various degrees of experience in managing and assessing financial risk. When this risk is not fully appreciated or quantified, the potential for making decisions not suited to investor requirements is significantly increased. A feasibility study provides key information on project development potential, requiring detailed technical investigations with thorough financial analysis. Centaur Mining and Exploration (CME) owned and operated Cawse Nickel Operations (CNO), one of three Australian projects to develop and process vast amounts of near surface nickel resources. A technical ædue-diligenceÆ and æbankable feasibility studyÆ confirmed the large resource base, newly applied yet tested technology and relatively low unit costs would produce nickel in the lower half of industry operating costs. A number of production variables including capital requirements, delayed start-up, nickel grade, processing, maintenance and product output were outside the feasibility estimate. This was combined with exchange rate fluctuations and lower Ni prices. The inability to generate adequate cash flow and service debt repayments ultimately led to receivership and liquidation of all assets. Following the sale of CentaurÆs gold and nickel divisions, $A 784 million remained outstanding to creditors. This paper aims to define key issues leading to CNOÆs collapse by reviewing feasibility parameters, valuation methodology and project development. Some methods of assessing project viability are discussed with the aim of increasing stakeholder risk awareness.

Methane and fire hazards have a vital effect on work safety and continuity of mining plant operation. In the 1990s, the SMP hazards monitoring and ventilation control systems, based on continuous measurement of air parameters, were put into operation at nearly 30 Polish mines. These systems provide continuous measurement of methane concentration within the range of zero to 100 per cent with automatic switching off of electrical energy immediately after detection of potentially explosive conditions. Early detection of coal spontaneous combustion and open fires is made by continuous measurements of CO, CO2, smoke and O2 content in mine air as well as temperature changes in air and rock mass. The essence of the system is intrinsic safety of all underground instrumentation and uninterrupted central power supply from the surface. All abnormal and critical states are signalled to the mine control room. These trigger alarm and emergency procedures. The computer based ventilation monitoring and control system also performs the function of an expert system for fire detection and underground fire fighting. The mine control operator (dispatcher) makes use of stored data in computer escape route schemes and procedures for the safe withdrawal of miners from hazardous areas. The operator can put in motion intrinsically safe alarm signalling units and banners with programmed messages indicating escape routes.

Many kinds of shield machines are being driven in the soft ground of Tokyo metropolitan area. Tunnel alignments for underground power transmission lines are generally planned to pass under public roads where facilities, especially life-line facilities, are densely located. Therefore, it is frequently required to drive the shield machines along very sharply curving routes. This paper reports on the performance of the new shield machine - the Sharp Curve Excavation Shield Machine - developed by Tokyo Electric Power Co., Inc., which can freely drive along a much sharper curve than conventional machines. Some of features of the developed devices of this machine are, maximum flexing angle of 6.5 degree in all deirection at the middle of shield body, maximum bending angle of 3.5 degree in all direction at the cutter disc, and so on. This shield machine can there- fore drive along curve of minimum radius 15m. The machine was confidently applied to the const- ruction of tunnel in soft clay strata at N values 2 to 5. Outer diameter 3.7m. Length 202m. Horizontal curve; radius 15m, length 20m x 2. Vertical curve; radius 30 m, inclined driven up 29%. The behaviors of the shield machine, segments and surrounding ground were monitored during construction for safety and efficiency check of this machine.

Since its formation in Papua New Guinea and raising of A$2 million in 1980, Niugini Mining Limited (NML) has grown to a company capitalised on the Australian Stock Exchange at about A$350 million. In 1995 the company produced some 237 000 ounces of gold, 700 000 ounces of silver and nearly 5000 tonnes of copper from its operations at Red Dome, in North Queensland and San Cristobal in The Atacama Desert of Northern Chile. This production contrasts with Niugini Mining's first mining venture at Mt Victor in the Eastern Highlands of PNG which yielded 20 000 ounces of gold and 11 600 of silver between 1987 and 1989. Following the formation of an exploration joint venture in 1982 with Kennecott Explorations (Australia) Ltd, now a subsidiary of RTZ, Niugini Mining's early recognition of the gold potential of volcanic rocks at plate margins led to discovery of the Lihir deposit in July 1982. This deposit containing about 42 million ounces of gold in resources, is one of the largest undeveloped gold deposits in the world. Following raising of equity funds through the float of Lihir Gold Ltd and debt finance in 1995, construction of the mine at a cost of US$673 million is now underway with first full-scale production at approximately 600 000 ounces of gold per year expected in early- 1998.

The writers of these notes, having conducted some tests on the steam consumption of air compressors under varying conditions, believe that the detailed results of such tests will be of interest to the members of the Institute, and may lead to the contribution of further and more valuable information, of benefit both to manufacturers and users of this class of machinery-to the manufacturer in that he frequently has the opportunity of giving a very thorough test to the machine in the shop, and-tothe user or purchaser by making clear to him what may be reasonably demanded of a high-class machine. It must be remembered that, though of the highest importance, a low steam consumption is but one of the many features of a high-classmachine; for the present, however, it has been considered advisable to confine the paper chiefly to the first-mentioned aspect, with such information concerning the air ends as is obtained along with the steam consumption tests. Unfortunately, too few of these tests are conducted, and but few results are published, therefore the writers feel that no apology is needed in bringing their results before the members.Some nine months ago the Brilliant Extended G. One of the main tools used by mining operations to mitigate the risk of rock burst is the installation of a so-called ædynamic resistantÆ support system. Such systems are designed to absorb the impact of shockwaves created by mine-induced seismic events. Dynamic support must be strong and capable of sustaining high loads and, at the same time, they have to be flexible and accommodate large deformation. A dynamic support system is therefore a system capable of absorbing a high quantity of energy. Ground support systems are composed of rock reinforcement (rock bolts or cable bolts) and surface support (mesh or shotcrete). In terms of surface support, fibre-reinforced shotcrete is increasingly seen as the industry preferred solution when difficult ground conditions are experienced, including areas of high seismic hazard. A thick layer of shotcrete is certainly strong but it is by no means flexible. Normal weld-mesh has some flexibility, but it is not very strong. The Australian Centre for Geomechanics (ACG), in collaboration with Onesteel Reinforcing Pty Ltd, is currently working on a new high-energy absorption mesh that combines strength and flexibility. The new mesh can be installed with a jumbo, in a similar way as the widely used sheet of weld-mesh. This paper describes the development of this new mesh system.

For several years, the Geology Department of the University of Canterbury has hosted a series of postgraduate projects in the field of coal studies, supported principally by the Ministry of Energy and to a lesser extent by private companies. These projects have involved mainly West Coast Coalfields, and my own studies have focussed on inorganic geochemical aspects of West Coast coals. Because of the large number of potentially important analyte elements in coal, and the wide diversity of coals occurring in the West Coast region, this project has required a substantial amount of work to be spent on sample collection, sample preparation, development of analytical methods, and actual analysis. Considerable problems must be faced at the sampling stage: Can sufficient information be obtained from whole-seam composites, or should seams be sampled in plies. Ply analysis is preferable, but results of proximate analyses are usually available for composites only. Where multi-seam drillhole samples become available (eg Greymouth Coalfield, where some holes yielded more than six sampled seams), the ply option involves a dramatic increase in the number of samples. I have attempted to strike a workable compromise between geographical coverage of coalfields, and detailed sampling of individual seams at each locality. In many cases, sample material has been used jointly with Jane Newman who has carried out petrographic studies.

The relative effects of the two basic mechanisms contributing to rock breakage during blasting, shock and gas penetration, are neither well understood nor well characterized, and need further clarification. Blasthole liner (BHL) tests separate the two effects, and by enabling direct measurement of borehole expansion give insight into the shock/gas energy partitioning in rock confinement. The hydrodynamic code DYNA2D is used to simulate the shock effect of the detonation of emulsion in a stainless steel lined hole, and the predicted expansion is compared with experiment. Workers in the past have neglected near-blasthole phenomena and have calibrated models based on stress measurements remote from the blasthole. Extrapolation back to the blasthole has inherent limitations, and indeed, one of the deficiencies of these models is that they have not been able to predict correct borehole expansions, as observed in BHL experiments. DYNA2D has been enhanced by the ICI group with a detonation model which resolves the explosive reaction zone. As a preliminary step towards the ultimate goal of devising a practical damage model, simulations are used to predict the maximum expansion that would take place if the rock were to remain undamaged. Various material parameters are investigated and it is shown that calculated liner expansions are appreciably lower than measured values for high rock yield strengths, while greater than values for low yield strengths.

ALTHOUGH the development of the various flotation processes during the last 8 years has been so revolutionary, this development has been, until recently, entirely confined to the separation of the gangue from the mixed metalliferous sulphides.The desirability of finding some method of separating the independent sulphides from such a miXture, by means of flotation, has long been recognized. ThIS need was emphasized when the slimes resulting from the grinding of Broken Hill sulphide ores were for the first time successfully dealt with by the Mineral Separation Company's process on the Central mine. This process proved the practicability of separating the sulphides of lead and zinc as a mixed concentrate from the gangue present in slime. Although this was a very notable achievement, the process has not been generally used, owing to the mixed lead and zinc concentrates resulting from the treatment being acceptable neither to the zinc nor the lead smelters.Although the introduction of eucalyptus oil in minute quantities as an emulsifying agent has simplified the work of the subsequent tabling of mixed sulphide concentrates, rendering unnecessary the burning off or removal of the oil, there will always be a considerable quantity of slimy product too fine to settle on the moving surface of the concentrating machines, and therefore requiring other means for its division into lead and zinc concentrates.

Improved understanding of the variables that influence hydrocyclone performance is of increasing interest to the iron ore industry, where hydorcyclones are widely used to deslime fine ore. In many cases, the impact of particular variables is not quantified sufficiently well experimentally to ensure that industrial performance will match expectations. The current work focused on developing and implementing a systematic methodology to evaluate and compare the performance of four different hydrocyclones in a desliming application. A critical component of the project was the design and construction of a pilot-scale hydrocyclone rig using state of the art monitoring and sampling methods. A wide ranging test programme was conducted to quantify the effect on metallurgical performance of the key hydrocyclone variables such as pressure, feed density, vortex finder size, spigot size and hydrocyclone make/overall design. Details of the experimental approach are presented, along with a discussion of the sizing analysis methods used. Performance criteria were established to assess the four hydrocyclones. The effects of each major variable were quantified over a wide range of conditions. The results show that clear performance differentiation was achieved, enabling the selection of the optimum configuration. The results from this work demonstrate the benefit of objectively assessing the performance of nominally equivalent units in selecting an optimum configuration that best satisfies the performance criteria.

A novel approach is suggested for the solution of planning and development problems in the coal, mining industry. The formation of coal measures depends to a significant extent on sequential geological processes and events which are probably best defined in a "system of processes and responses." The great number of variables in such a system is a characteristic feature of geological environments. Research work over the past two decades, in particular, has successfully established analytical procedures for the identification and definition of relevant and irrelevant variables for mining developments in specific geological situations. Such situations are typifiable within the regional geological setting of coal deposits. Scale gaps can be bridged by reliance on common symmetrical attributes and pervasive geometric features. Depositional processes and their resulting attributes are responsible for the development of mechanically significant rockmass "defects" and anisotropies; such features have to be identified and assessed for the selection of colliery design criteria. It is suggested that the procedural frame- work of systems engineering analysis is a most appropriate tool for the assessment of those geological features that can influence the mechanical behaviour of the "floor-seam-roof" system in "high technology" mining operations of the future. The performance of 460 stope surfaces at WMC ResourcesÆ Olympic Dam Operation (ODO) has been used to investigate the confidence that can be placed in the Stability Graph Method for design of stope dimensions. A detailed database of stope performance and ground condition information was established for each stope. The database contains all the required stability graph information as well as other factors thought to influence stability, such as discrete major structures, poor shape and exposure time. The performance of each stope surface was quantified by calculating Equivalent Linear Overbreak/Slough (ELOS). The performance of stope walls and crowns was plotted on the supported and unsupported case history stability graphs. Based on this information an ODO design limit of HR = 3.3 x NÆ0.33 has been suggested for stope walls. Walls that plotted above this line were 80 per cent stable, 20 per cent unstable and zero per cent failed. Below the line 60 per cent were stable, 30 per cent unstable and ten per cent failed. Supported crowns that are flat or arched in shape and are not within the influence of major structures can be designed in the stability graphÆs æstable zoneÆ with a strong likelihood of stability. The Stability Graph Method did not reliably predict the performance of unsupported crowns at ODO.

The accuracy of an ore reserve is only as good as the geologist's understanding of the deposit. The methods that are applied to resource and reserve estimation reflect that understanding. At the Olympic Dam copper-uranium-gold deposit in South Australia, evolution in the understanding of the controls on mineralisation coupled with the changing demands of the project have led to changes in the approach to reserve estimation. The project has moved into a phase where detailed stope mining reserves are now required as distinct from global ore reserves. The complex nature of the mineralisation and the large amount of data demand that all available information be readily accessible in a flexible format. To enable the selective manipulation of geological and assay information and its characterisation, a relational database has been developed. For reserve calculations themselves, initial computations were based on a system derived from that used for the Kambalda nickel orebodies. The Olympic Dam system differed mainly in the use of statistical analyses in the estimation of grade instead of the previous polygonal area of influence weighting method, Three dimensional weighting techniques are now being used for local reserve estimates. Flexible facilities for raw data handling combined with grade estimation techniques which are commensurate with the mine geologist's understanding, produce detailed gridded and contoured ore zone models suitable for reserve calculations and stope designs.
