The ore body being worked is about one hundred feet in length by seventy feet in width. A face of about fifteen feet is stoped over the whole level at one operation, this height standing without any timber.Double lines of logs, twenty feet in length and from ten inches to one foot in thickness at the small end, are then laid longitudinally, butt to butt, and breaking joint from end to end of the ore body they are at ten feet centres from wall to wall. The starting logs are single for the first ten feet and their ends are hitched into the solid rock. These are called "miners" and are the logs which are picked up as the level underneath is worked up. The double layer gives a better chance of picking up. Logs are now laid from the centre of the ore body at right angles to the miners, the ends being hitched into the walls. The Queensland Mining Act 1968-1972 has now been in force for almost two years. The Act was completely re-written and has made for easier working, e.g., there is no distinction now between Gold Mining Leases and other Mining Leases. For the first time in the history of Queensland, provision has been made for caveats, so that options etc. can be protected. The chief problem which has arisen so far has been the question of the Government issuing mining leases to the holder of an Authority to Prospect over areas which are included iri its Authority. Litigation has taken place and an Appeal, it is understood, will shortly be heard by the Privy Council. The provisions dealing with labour conditions have been brought up-to-date and generally speaking, they are quite clear as to the responsibility of the Lessee. The Mining on Private Land Act has been repealed and the provisions relating to mining on private land are now a part of the Mining Act itself. One distinctive feature of the global mining industry approaching the twenty-first century is the worldwide commitment of mining houses to large-scale projects in developing countries. One good example is BHP's development of the Escondida copper project in Chile. The Escondida orebody was discovered in 1981 and construction began in July 1988. Mining began in December 1990 at a design capacity of 320 000 tonnes of copper contained in concentrate. Out put has grown significantly and shortly Escondida will become the largest single copper mine in the world producing copper at the rate of 800 000 tonnes per annum, including 80 000 tonnes of copper metal. Escondida provides a case study of the development and growth of a large-scale mining operation in a developing country. Key elements have been innovative financing, the management of country risk, the recruitment of an excellent workforce, the use of advanced technologies and best practice in environmental management and community relations. Escondida is one of the global mining industry's success stories in the 1990s.

The stimulus of major capital expenditure in establishing open cut coal mining operations in the Hunter Valley led Coal & Allied Industries to look to a computer based information system as a tool to assist mine management in day to day operating decisions, as well as to provide a base of comparative data to help in long term equipment procurement decisions. The mine information system was conceived as an integrated set of three subsystems; costing, production recording, and maintenance. The maintenance management features of the system are closely keyed to a policy of preventive maintenance and maintenance costing based on user specified parameters. Central to this policy is the maintenance work order, which may be created and updated directly via interactive procedures at visual display terminals. The, system was designed for on-line processing in a multi-mine shared operating environment. Each mine controls its own data capture, and most other processing functions directly from terminals. The system is currently operational on the Combined Group Services Pty Ltd FACOM M150 computer, located in Newcastle, NSW.

Feasibility studies in the development of mining projects are fundamental to most investment decisions. It is important that the issues addressed and the degree of detail involved in feasibility studies are consistent with the investment decisions to be taken. Emphasis should be placed on a thorough analysis of critical project parameters prior to detailed investigations being undertaken into other activities which are not relevant to the decisions at hand. Therefore, the issues to be decided upon should be influenced significantly by the stage of development of the project and by the reliability of technical and financial information used in the study. Some of the more critical parameters of feasibility studies are commodity prices, inflation rates and discount rates. Advice is given on the selection of these inputs and also on their application in the feasibility study as the project progresses through its various development stages. Uranium occurrences and the probable Australian reserves are discussed and the recovery and processing methods used in treatment plants at Radium Hill and Port Pirie, S.A., Rum Jungle and Moline, N.T., and Mary Kathleen, Qid. are reviewed. The broad aspects of the application of nuclear power in Australia are then considered, and those factors of greatest significance are highlighted. It is these factors that are most likely to dictate the future role of nuclear generation in Australia. In commenting on private industry applications, the paper emphasises that each case must be considered on its own merits, and a warning is given that general statements can be misleading. In the long-term situation nuclear power is considered to be capable of playing a leading role and the discussion covers desalination and high load industries although short term applications appear difficult to justify. In non-power applications for nuclear energy reference is made to isotopes and the uses of nuclear devices in mining and civil engineering with a pertinent comment on safety.

Emf measurements on SE galvanic cell: SS; Ni-NiO I solid electrolyte/ZrO2 + CaO I [Pb + Bi]liq alloy; (PbO); SS were made in the temperature range 913-1034 K to determine the thermodynamic properties of oxygen dissolution in liquid lead. Bismuth alloys with bismuth in the dilute concentration range of 0 to 3.08 mass per cent and oxygen in the alloy varied by equilibrating the metallic system with a suitable (PbO) slag. Wagner's interaction parameter approach was used to calculate the ternary interaction parameter, eBiO at temperatures of 913, 953 and 993 and 1034 K and to observe the temperature dependence eBiO = 19 200/T - 17.454. Quasichemical fonnulation was employed to yield lnf BiO and reveal the effect of bismuth on oxygen in lead. The results obtained are discussed on the basis of theoretical models and the value of Wagner's energy parameter 'h' estimated to predict the results in a Pb-Bi-O system.

The northern Drummond and Bowen basins region represents one of AustraliaÆs most prospective areas for epithermal vein and stockwork style gold deposits, with both low and high sulfidation epithermal mineralisation known in the region. 3D-GIS reconstructions, numerical and probabilistic modelling (UDEC, FLAC 3D and WofE) are used here to develop a better understanding of the controls operating on the mineral systems of the region and are aimed at enhancing predictive capabilities. This paper will discuss the challenges and opportunities in the years 1998 to 2002 faced by the operation and personnel at Thalanga, and its continued survival through short life projects (three feasibilities in four years). It will describe the processing of the different ores, issues faced and operating and technical innovations that occurred during that period. This will include: commissioning on very high grade Cu ores, treatment of high Sulfur feed ores (~46 per cent S) and the effects of the installation of a Detritor Mill on the process.

Effective selective mining relies heavily on high quality geological data and assay data. Such assay data is dependent on effective sampling protocols, sample preparation techniques, assaying practices and well founded quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) procedures. This paper describes recent developments in grade control sampling at PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals high-grade Kencana gold mine at Gosowong Indonesia and presents a case study in identifying, minimising and monitoring random and systematic sampling error including the use of duplicate sampling and the Thompson Howarth technique for quantifying random sampling error.

The Bureau of Mines has developed and deployed three expert systems to give advice on mining health and safety. These are: dust control for continuous miners, dust control for longwall shearers, and methane control. All three systems query about the nature and extent of the problem. Typical questions asked deal with observed methane levels, ventilation type and quantity, cutting sequence, and what control technology is employed. Advice given does not focus on a single issue, but may suggest a variety of approaches consistent with the ability of the operator to implement the Suggestions.

Sampling and analysis of mineral deposits need to be executed without fear or favour of financial or personal impacts. Examples are given to illustrate the effects of departures, witting and unwitting, from correct use of appropriate techniques and/or equipment with emphasis on exploration and mining of porphyry copper deposits of the Pacific Rim. This paper reviews the history of environmental assessment in New Zealand with reference to mineral developments. Emphasis is given to larger more controversial projects particularly metal mines. The changing role and application of the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Procedures is examined in the context of changes in the government's environmental administration and the response of the Ministry of Energy's resource allocation group. Conclusions are drawn on the effectiveness of the present environmental assessment activities and on the allocation of administration of priorities in the Ministry. The Ministry of Energy has effectively ceased to exist.

Following plant trials in 1972 Mount Lyell installed an AMDEL On Stream Analysis system for measuring copper and density on the flot- ation feed and final plant tailing streams, in August 1973. As a result of poor performance of the final tailing system these probes were changed over to the rougher tailing stream, back to the final tailing stream and finally to the final copper concentrate stream where the system is currently performing satisfact- orily. The history of the development of the system to its current operational status is Described.

The capabilities of the three 61R and one 81R Robbins Raiseborers currently in use at Mount Isa are defined. Their applications in the development of ventilation and hoisting shafts, orepasses, escape routes, fill passes etc. are described and possible future uses of these and newer raiseborers at Mount Isa are examined. Problems associated with the use of raiseborers, together with ways of overcoming them are discussed. The impact of raiseborers on the mining operation is assessed in terms of new approaches to design and development, safety, cost and manpower efficiencies.

The, Ore-bodies.-The ore-bodies of the North mine, North Broken Hill Ltd.; consist of two lenses, connected by a narrow neck of mineralized country. They pitch at an angle of 40° in an easterly direction and dip north at 60° to the horizontal. The southern ore-body, on a horizontal plane, has a total maximum length of 800 feet and in one place attains a width of 230 feet, whilst the northern orebody has a maximum'length of 600 feet and a maximum width of 80 feet.

The eastern Asia island-arc systems are regarded as specific marginal structures having the common features of geological development and deep structure. The notions on deep structure of island- arc systems are based on the data of studies of the mantle and low-crustal xenoliths. Analysis of location of deposits and ore occurrences of different ages within island arcs in comparison with, the processes of deep heat and mass transfer allows us to develop a-model of mobilization, migration and accumulation of ore substance in the "crust-mantle" system.
