Mining is both a high risk and a long term business. This is dramatically illustrated by the fact that, on average, the explorer will expend over $30 million in a ten year period for each significant economic discovery. The time required to complete the exploration process is one of the most substantial commitments made by any mining company. For example the time lag between the implementation of an exploration programme and an economic discovery is variously estimated to take two to ten years. The ore definition phase following discovery currently takes between two and five years while subsequent mine development may take one to two years in easy situations and up to 8 in difficult environments. In most countries the critical path through the early stages is determined largely by technical considerations but in almost all countries the path through the later phases is dictated by the plethora of permits, licences and community involvement steps.

Substantial efforts by the industry, as well as by process and equipment designers, have resulted in many innovative developments that provide cost effective reductions in water usage. This paper showcases four emerging best practices in industry including examples of recent installations. Belt press filters are a small fraction of the operating and capital cost of alternative ædryÆ tailings technologies. This gives operators who must ædryÆ their tailings a competitive advantage and makes such operations much more sustainable. The new generation of belt filter presses use less energy, produces lower cake moistures and better disposal stacking properties. The need for tailings storage facilities may be eliminated or in some cases high-grade tailings can be dewatered and sold as a low value product. Mining applications include sand tailings, sinter plant waste, coal tailings and power station fly ash. Flip-flow screening machines are proven worldwide in the dry classification of coal and other minerals, reducing the size of beneficiation plants, whilst reducing energy, water demand and media consumption. They also allow the screening of wet/sticky materials not able to be sized using conventional screens. Lamella separators are used for toxic water clarification and/or sludge thickening in many downstream metal industries with the underflow often dewatered in a belt filter press. Such low cost, high capacity thickeners could also be used instead of conventional thickeners at smaller mines. The simple and reliable continuous washing upward flow (CWUF) sand filters have been used for treatment of waste water from coal preparation plants and steel works as well as in the production of potable water. The filtered waste water from mining processes can then either be reused or discharged from site. Other installations include cleaning mine water to prevent the blocking of dust suppression spray nozzles.

The Tropicana Gold Mine, owned by AngloGold Ashanti Australia Ltd (70% owned and managed) and Independence Group NL (30%) is located 330 kilometres east-northeast of Kalgoorlie, Australia, in the newly developed Albany-Fraser Orogen. Following extensive feasibility studies, a high pressure grinding roll (HPGR)-ball milling circuit was selected based on the reduced power requirements and thus reduced operating expenses. The HPGR-ball mill circuit was estimated to require 75% of the energy of a standard semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill circuit. Even with an anticipated greater capital cost, the HPGR-ball mill circuit was found to give significantly better financial returns in all cases investigated in the feasibility study. A comparison between the specific energy requirements of the HPGR, crush and SAG based circuits (SABC) from the feasibility work was conducted and the HPGR circuit was found to be considerably more energy efficient. A survey was conducted and the efficiency of the HPGR was similar to both the overall circuit design and the HPGR laboratory results, reflecting the accuracy that is possible for design and operation of HPGR circuits.Between 2015 to 2016, the Tropicana circuit has achieved a 20% increase in throughput from 780 to 930 t/h, and this increase has been maintained in 2017. This improvement can largely be attributed to upgrades to material handling processes, increased HPGR speed and smaller HPGR screen apertures. Computer simulation modelling (discrete event) has been used at Olympic Dam (OD) to model the handling of ore from the point of extraction at the stope drawpoint through to the ore stockpile on the surface. Computer simulation is a well accepted tool for modelling the behaviour of such large and complex operating systems. It is a particularly useful technique in complex operations where there are multiple interactions between the inputs and outputs of various unit operations. In this instance it can be utilised during the early stages of a project, for example, as part of the business case definition phase or the early engineering phase. A well constructed and tested simulation model provides a sound base upon which informed business decisions can be made. Furthermore, the behaviour of the model with varying inputs can help build a solid understanding of how the asset behaves when varying inputs and constraints are imposed upon it and, as a result, the major points of leverage that designers and operations personnel have to affect the real world behaviour of those assets. Better decisions can be made when the right facts can be examined, various options explored and conclusions tested. Simulation modelling is one of the tools available to make this process work.

"The primary control objective of the project is to achieve milling optimisation by ensuring that the energy available for rock breakage is used as efficiently as possible. This is achieved by increasing the level of mill filing until a process constraint is reached. Stable operation against this limiting constraint is then maintained to ensure long-term optimised operation.Semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill control optimisation presents a number of challenges. SAG mills have multiple inputs that are used to control multiple outputs (MIMO process). Secondly, the SAG mill loading process is a ‘high inertia’ process that can be approximated as an integrating process. This means that it is open-loop unstable. The hybrid control strategy presented implements an advanced ‘load stabiliser’, which transforms this integrator process into a more manageable first order process, which can be steered stably against the constraints. This SGS hybrid Expert control strategy implemented on both SAG mills at the Porgera concentrator therefore consists of two integrated parts responsible for:stabilising the mill load to a targetdriving the mill load target to the maximum determined by the process constraints (eg maximum power draw) to maximise efficiency and throughput. A comparative study is done between the operation of the plant for a period of a month before and a month after the implementation of this strategy. This paper briefly describes the construction in 1979/80 of a 70m deep trial open pit coal mine near Bowmans S.A. and describes more fully the hydrogeological aspects of the exercise. The primary purpose of the Trial Pit was to provide a large sample (700 tonnes) of coal for combustion tests to be carried out in West Germany and the United States of America. Consideration was given to obtaining the sample of coal by drilling and by shaft sinking as alternatives to open pit methods. It was expected that economic mining of the deposit on an operational scale could only be achieved by open cut methods and it was recognised that major uncertainties existed in planning such a mine in the deep unconsolidated multi-aquifer deposit. It was therefore elected to obtain the bulk sample by constructing a trial open pit, which would be closely monitored to provide as much data as possible for future planning of a full scale mine. The dewatering of the Trial Pit was achieved using 26 deep pumping wells, assisted in the later stages by several hundred well points. This was probably the largest dewatering project currently in operation in Australia.

Codelco Chile is currently developing the El Teniente û New Mine Level Project (NMLP) in order to increase ore production by seeking to mine the ore deposit located under the current operational orebody. Reserves of 2000 million tonnes (Mt) have been quantified, which will be extracted as from the year 2017 by using the panel caving and progressive sinking method. Codelco and SKM Minmetal (SKM) jointly developed the project prefeasibility stage (PFS), closing these studies in March 2008. The first part of the project approach is to replace mine production currently feeding the Colon concentrator facilities with 137 000 tonnes per day (t/d), focusing attention on a production increase from the year 2026 up to 180 000 t/d. Project efforts have also been centred on maximising the contribution of new technologies for both construction and operational phases of the New Mine Level, together with selecting the best mine infrastructure to keep El Teniente operations going on for the next 50 years. Implicit in this is the inherent improvement of a variety of current Mina El Teniente process and management practices. The plan is to reduce actual mine operational risks and take advantage of new opportunities afforded by the project, which is in effect a greenfield project with respect to the implementation of fundamental changes in the labour and business environment. In addition, issues related to human resources, maintenance and management, materials handling, establishing centralised operations and accesses, automation and remote operations control and power efficiency could also be addressed. The project, beyond the New Mine Level exploitation, considers the mineÆs future potential, with a second deeper exploration in prospect named Deep Level. Finally, the project identifies features that would add value to the mine operations, in an initiative named æSpace for Future TechnologiesÆ. This will allow the eventual implementation of new electrical equipment and the application of mechanised technologies and other process improvements for the mine development.

The development of a robust belt sampling strategy and protocol inunderground gold mines is a fundamental requirement for effective grade quality control, ore accounting and mine-mill reconciliations. As part of the ore management system, a belt sampling system has been developed by the author, which is used to predict monthly gold grade and its error for underground/belt/mill reconciliation and grade control. This paper presents the step-by-step development of the belt samplingstrategy and sample preparation protocol at Target, an underground gold mine in South Africa. The belt sampling system at Target consists of an underground belt transporting run-of-mine material into an underground transfer point, a weightometer, a two stage crushing system, a tube splitter and a catchment device. The design allows run-of-mine ore on the belt to be sampled automatically by a go-belt sampler. GyÆs sampling theory of particulate materials forms the basicframework of the belt sampling strategy. The theory is used to quantify the optimum sample mass of broken material to be taken from the belt and to predict its reliability. It is also employed to determine the Fundamental Sampling Error (FSE), time interval between samples and particle size requirements of the final underground belt sample. Further, GyÆs sampling theory provides the means of analysing the crushing processes, splitting, segregation error, analytical variance, and the best sample preparation protocol. Although the belt sampling strategy developed in this study was forWitwaterstrand gold ore, the process is entirely general and may be very successfully used in any underground or surface mine.

In recent years there have been many changes in mine ownership due to the on-going rationalisation towards larger mining companies. Larger companies inevitably find it hard to manage small mining operations and in many cases smaller mines do not fit corporate resource, production and profit criteria. Smaller companies are more suited to managing these medium or small scale mines and are tendering for the purchase or lease of mines that larger companies wish to dispose of. In addition to these factors there has also been a trend (especially in Western Australia) for mines to continue operating at ever increasing depths. This in turn has led to more mines operating in high stress environments and experiencing damaging seismicity. Assessing the viability of seismically active mines from a takeover or purchase point of view should involve analysing the risk profile of every aspect on mining that could be affected by adverse seismicity. This includes assessing current and alternative mining methods, mine designs, support systems, extraction sequencing, monitoring and blasting. This paper includes discussion on items that need to be assessed when considering the purchase of seismically active mines, with experience gained from some recent studies in Western Australia. In these cases it was apparent that quantification of previous seismic history on itÆs own was a totally inadequate method of assessing minewide seismic risk potential. A more holistic approach is required, taking into account all aspects of relevant data, all the minewide effects of seismic activity and all possible means of mitigating those effects.

The sampling time, the costs and its quality are the three factors that determine the best method of drilling in mineral exploration. The two principal methods of reverse circulation (RC) and diamond core drilling are often used in combination by mine operators. RC is used for drilling shallow holes and in-pit grade control, and core drilling for deeper holes to identify future resources. The RC method is faster and more flexible than coring and provides virtually uncontaminated cuttings (ranges from dust to 25 mm chips) to the surface cyclone suitable for geochemical anomalies. The diamond coring produces core samples to increase the level of geological knowledge and the 3D extension and distribution of the orebody. However, both of these methods are subjected to certain limitations and inefficiencies in reaching deeper depths and drilling complex hole geometries. Examples of such shortcomings include the inability to provide enough air pressure for RC drilling and high friction between drill pipe and the hole wall in diamond core drilling.Considering that delivering large volume of reliable samples from deep zones to the surface in shortest possible time is of paramount importance in mineral exploration, and assuming that obtaining core samples over whole overburden is not always essential, then drilling small size holes as fast as possible and delivering the small chip samples to the surface would be a good alternative with several advantages over conventional drilling methods for deep hard rocks mineral exploration. As a result, the use of coiled tube (CT) drilling technology has been proposed recently for such applications. CT is a continuous length of ductile steel or composite tube stored and transported on a large reel; and allows fast drilling by eliminating the connection time and providing continuous circulation during drilling. This enables quick access to the zone of interest to collect the cuttings or obtain core samples. CT is advantageous particularly in drilling directional boreholes and multi-laterals. In this paper, feasibility of using CT delivering reliable samples is discussed for deep mineral exploration. Sampling equipment manufacturers endeavour to ensure that the mechanical equipment installed in sampling systems are designed and manufactured to adhere to the requirements of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) or other standards relevant to the application. The mechanical parameters necessary to achieve these standards can be well controlled and requirements such as constant speed can be met through good mechanical design and engineering. However, when the equipment is installed and put into operation, the ISO compliance of the system is out of the hands of the equipment manufacturer and handed to the operator, who may be a generalist control system integrator.Making a sampling system perform according to standards, and being able to monitor and report on compliance require that the sampling system knowledge and the control integration is combined and applied in an integrated approach. Using a dedicated library of control routines developed for sampling can change a system from having compliant equipment to being a compliant system. A projected image is not always a true representation of a situation, or indeed an industry. This is often the case of the mining and minerals industry, which has frequently been portrayed in a negative light with a male dominance stigma attached. However, these issues can be combated for both the industry and its future, current undergraduate students, through undergraduate industry experience. In particular, vacation work enables female students to dispel many myths surrounding the industry and realise that the mining and minerals field offers career development for both genders. This paper will discuss how vacation work enables students to make important career decisions even before they have graduated. Industry experience provides undergraduates with the opportunity to gain practical knowledge relevant to their field of study. Additionally it allows students to observe the nature of the industry and the sacrifices necessary to advance careers. The prior insights into an industry are relevant to all students, but particularly female students, who might otherwise be dissuaded from a career in mining. This paper is written from the perspective of two female undergraduate students studying Mining and Minerals Processing Engineering.

The Beckman Air Comparison Pycnometer is as accurate as the specific gravity bottle for the determination of the volume of fine powders, or particles, up to 50 c.c. in volume. The determination using the air comparison pycnometer is performed in a much shorter time.A graph of density versus iron content for samples from four different iron ore deposits shows that iron contents can be obtained to within 4 per cent iron. Field geologists should be able to obtain quick and relatively accurate iron contents of ore samples using the air comparison pycnometer at these deposits.INTRODUCTIONA Beckman Model 930 Air Comparison Pycnometer was purchased to decrease the time required for the determination of the volume of stones and powders. The liquid displacement method was used previously and the time required per determination varied from a few minutes for stones to half an hour, or more for fine powders. With the air comparison pycnometer, the determination takes approximately 2 min and can be quickly checked for accuracy by a further determination. ‘Every mine is a pilot’ is an attitude which encourages the mining paradox of optimistic mine plans and equipment under performance; propped up by an environment lacking accountability. The premise that ‘every mine is a pilot’, appears to underlie the development and operating approach to most mines. It is the hypothesis of this paper that many mining companies, development teams and their managers largely ignore what is done elsewhere. Anecdotally, most planners don’t know whether the selected rates are high or low (rates based on theoretical models tend to be high – certainly higher than what most companies can achieve). Mines then consistently operate the equipment at rates well below targets; often more than 20 per cent below. Further to this paradox, mine performance data demonstrates the average mine is currently operating their equipment at levels of output not much more than half the output of those in the top ten per cent. On the whole mines don’t know the potential of their equipment and therefore don’t put appropriate plans in place to do better. After all, when ‘every mine is a pilot’ there is little reason to look to one’s peers for an indication of potential. This paper will outline why every mine is not a pilot and how mines do value some knowledge, but not as much as they should. This paper proposes a two-pronged approach to address this issue in the area of equipment performance. This approach is to:1. engage in better forecasting of equipment rates and better subsequent performance through benchmarking against industry standards2. provide conditions for more accountability.These parameters are linked and proper implementation of them will address the losses which many shareholders and financiers have incurred when investing in companies with unrealistic mining plans.CITATION:Lumley, G I, 2016. Controlling the access of equipment, and people, has become more critical over the last few years for improving productivity and to meet safety responsibilities imposed by legislated obligations to have safety management systems. Hence Mine Site Technologies (MST) has spent the last three years completing the development of the tagging system to meet the mining industryÆs requirements, particularly streamlining access control. The basic tagging system tracks active Tags carried by personnel, or attached to vehicles and equipment, within underground zones. These Tags are detected (read) by Beacons placed strategically throughout the mine. As a Tag, or Tags, go past a Beacon they are read and the information transmitted back to the main database PC. This allows the current whereabouts of personnel and equipment to be known, as well as the history of their movements. The objectives of implementing the TRACKER Tagging System at Oaky No 1 Coal Mine were to: maintain a count of personnel inbye a particular point, and can alarm when a pre-set number is reached (eg the limit imposed by availability of SCSRÆs, etc); maintain a count of vehicles (and vehicle type) inbye a point, and can alarm if when a pre-set number is reached (eg when rated diesel units exceeds the limit for the ventilation present in that zone); manage the vehicle fleet, by keeping track of various vehicles underground better control and dispatch management of the equipment is achieved; keep track of equipment, knowing the location of equipment (such as forks, baskets, pumps, fans, etc) where last used or stored will minimise the risk of losing gear and assist in keeping inventory to a minimum; and locate personnel in emergency situations, by placing read Beacons throughout the mine the location of all personnel can be known in real time so that in the event of an emergency, their withdrawal can be monitored.

Traditional in situ fan flow test methods under accepted standards require determinations to be made of both static pressures and total pressures during testing. This is to determine the resultant velocity pressures, which are vital in the accurate determination of the final fan airflow. These crucial velocity pressure (Vp) determinations are normally determined using simple manometric instrumentation such as an electronic manometer or an inclined liquid filled manometer. There is relatively little noise or fluctuation in the static pressure determinations and they can be quite easily and accurately recorded. There is almost always considerable fluctuation in the velocity pressure determinations though due to the highly turbulent and irregular velocity profile normally found in such in situ installations. This velocity turbulence means that the recording of such data is subject to random human error as the observer tries to average such fluctuations mentally during the observation period. Worse than this, and in the extreme, the recording of such velocity pressure data could actually easily be misreported if, for some reason, persons chose to do so.The author has devised a field method using highly accurate quartz crystal logging barometers to objectively record these velocity pressures. The method eliminates the ability to either mistakenly or intentionally misreport these crucial velocity pressures and is carried out in parallel with the recognised methodology, so result comparisons can be drawn. As such, a far greater level of confidence can be achieved in the final flow performance results than using the traditional more subjective method. Further to this it is difficult and almost impossible to refute the results using this ancillary substantiation method.The accurate determination of fan flows due to the impost of the carbon tax has taken on much more significance given the financial impacts in Australia at this time. The methodology detailed herein can be applied equally for both fan flow compliance testing and the verification of mine airflow data for greenhouse gas emission evaluations.The paper utilises the results of one 24-point pitot traverse to demonstrate the various findings. These include the very wide range of velocity pressures, which were logged at most of the measuring stations. It also illustrates how the method is utilised and compares the results derived from both this method and the more subjective traditional method along with the benefits of logging the velocity pressure results during the testing process.CITATION:Rowland, J A, 2013. "The mining industry is often challenged with the task of evaluating narrow vein open pit deposits. A realistic mineable solution from optimisation needs to accurately represent mining dilution and the practical limitations of mining equipment. Open pit dilution is driven according to mining method and fleet selection as this dictates the ‘selective mining unit’ (SMU) that can be practicably mined.Common evaluation methods represent dilution by:a mathematical dilution assumption addition of a dilution skin reblocking of the model to an appropriate SMU.This paper will explore an alternative method of applying dilution by adapting an underground stope modelling tool. By considering an SMU as a stope, automatic stope shape creators such as Datamine’s Mineable Shape Optimiser (MSO) can be used to create wireframes for each mining unit over the entire deposit. Using these wireframes, the model can be subblocked and assigned as either ore (inside the wireframe) or waste (outside the wireframe) prior to optimisation.The MSO process considers SMU geometry and a depth specific value-based cut-off. The mining industry is facing economic pressures to treat more challenging and lower grade ore types, as well as pressure relating to environmental impact and social license to operate. Preconcentration through bulk ore sorting has the potential to benefit all these areas by enabling mining operations to divert material of low economic value prior to processing, thereby achieving higher feed grades and recovery, while reducing the processing plant and tailings dam footprint and capital required throughout the life of mine. The effectiveness of bulk ore sorting depends on the heterogeneity of material at the measurement location, as well as the accuracy and precision of the measurement. An understanding of ore heterogeneity can be assessed using drill core data, which provides metre by metre elemental assays. This paper reviews such data and assesses the grade distributions over different scales, which suggests that sufficient heterogeneity exists at mining scales to allow the potential for bulk ore sorting. Prompt Gamma Neutron Activation Analysis (PGNAA) technology has proven to be a successful measurement technique within many industries, including mining. PGNAA was first developed in the early 1980’s for the measurement of the elemental composition of bulk materials on a conveyor belt. Today, Pulsed Fast Thermal Neutron Activation (PFTNA) technology is also applied in elemental analysis of bulk materials and has some advantages for bulk ore sorting. In order to enable effective bulk ore sorting, however, a PGNAA/PFTNA analyser must be designed to provide a representative bulk ore analysis with the necessary accuracy and precision. Examples are presented to provide an understanding of the factors affecting PGNAA/PFTNA performance in relation to effective bulk ore sorting.

The development and optimisation of mill discharge trommels, and specifically their screen panels, can be a neglected area in the complex operation of a minerals processing plant. Trommels are often seen as a ‘set and forget’ component of the circuit, even when significant improvements in design are possible. A redesigned trommel and panel arrangement has simplified and added flexibility to the plant shutdown schedule at Kirkland Lake Gold’s Fosterville Gold Mine in Central Victoria.Prior to the trommel redesign, the shutdown frequency was determined by the expected life of trommel panels at 14 weeks. Planning downtime around this item led to higher maintenance costs and wastage in other areas of the plant. This was particularly disruptive with respect to mill lining change-outs, which were forced out of sequence and often changed prematurely. Fosterville Gold engaged Metso Australia Limited to propose a new trommel design that would better suit the site. The new trommel was engineered to balance simplicity with performance, and incorporated the latest in Modular trommel design, modelling and Finite Elemental Analysis (FEA). Modular Panels and Spiral Segments achieve significantly longer life, and allow in-situ panel change outs, flexibility in spiral and dam positioning and an improvement in classification performance. Trommel panel life has significantly increased from 14 to 71 weeks in the trommel’s highest wearing zone. The new design has eliminated some risks to safety by reducing manual labour and lifting requirements during shutdowns. There is greater flexibility with respect to shutdown requirements. The site is no longer at the mercy of trommel panel lifespan, which allows for better optimisation of wear components in the circuit. CITATION:Pyke, J D, Katov, K and Ciutina, S T, 2018.
