Cannington Mine is an underground silver lead zinc operation located in north-west Queensland which has been in production since 1997. Ore is primarily moved through an underground material handling system comprised of a crusher, conveyor and hoisting shaft. The Fowler Shaft was constructed in 1997 using a strip and line method with the intent for it to provide a means to hoist ore from the loading station 600 m below surface. The shaft also serves as the route of key services including high voltage power, mine dewatering and fresh air. Despite the adherence to a mining exclusion zone, large-scale change in geotechnical conditions around the shaft were first observed in 2015. Ongoing ground movement around the shaft lead to cracking and delamination of the concrete liner. Shaft management required the on-site team to measure deformation rates and magnitudes, forecast change, manage rockfall risk and deforming pipework, and ultimately, hoisting skip clearance. Monitoring techniques to observe and measure deformation were required to evolve with the magnitude of movement. Some techniques leveraged off modern technology while some of the most useful techniques were based on logic and first principles. All shaft deformation management strategies relied on the co-operation and alignment between Cannington’s Infrastructure Maintenance, Survey and Geotechnical Departments.

One of the earliest and continuing challenges in driving sustainable development in large scale resource industry projects is around the issue of assessment û how do you measure the sustainability of a mineral operation? One of the key road blocks when confronted with this challenge is the temptation of technical folks to reach for a definition of sustainability or sustainable development. But definitions, by definition, have boundaries and limitations that serve to constrain thinking û they limit the thinking of what we can achieve with sustainability (it also acts as a barrier that constrains innovation). Rather than seeking definitions, better understanding of the core perspectives around sustainability and their application to the minerals industry provides a much more powerful platform from which to conduct assessments. But it is only when these perspectives are combined with the right framework and supporting techniques that the complex becomes doable. With the support of the perspectives and the framework, various assessment and measurement methodologies can be used; the challenge is communicating to stakeholders the sustainability character of the project in ways that are meaningful and to which people can connect. Assessment is not about finding the best or most accurate methods that fulfil strictly academic and possibly abstract requirements. The challenge is to help people understand what the impacts are, and what the value contributions will be, in a format and language that make sense in their world-view.

With the introduction in recent years of third-generation interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) techniques, monitoring of mine slopes, benches and surrounding areas has benefitted from increased accuracy and coverage. Fundamental research into point and distributed scattering techniques has pushed the use of InSAR to provide higher spatial and height resolution. In this paper we discuss the operationalisation of third-generation InSAR techniques and show its application to active mining operations.This paper will discuss the use of multiple independent measurements of ground movement obtained from operationally-derived InSAR products over a wide variety of deformation areas within an active open pit mining operation (ie pit slopes, dewatering depressions, tailings containment and waste dumps). A technique that shortens the time between observations (increased observation frequency) and provides ongoing estimates of measurement accuracy will be described. The methodology exploits available satellite data by using multiple satellites and multiple beams. The paper will also examine factors in the design of a mine survey with third-generation InSAR and illustrate some of the necessary engineering trade-offs to efficiently monitor a mine from space.Overall, this paper aims to demonstrate the capabilities and advantages of operational third-generation InSAR techniques for ground movement monitoring of mining operations and provide a framework for proper design of a mine InSAR survey.CITATION:Henschel, M D, Sato, S, Ahola, R and McParland, M A, 2014. The green field site is one that has no history of mining and as such it presents the designer with a blank canvas, on which any number of drill and blasting options can be drafted. No matter which mining method is selected all technology and experience will need to be acquired from outside sources, applied quickly and produce the right results. North Limited, in joint venture with the Sumitomo Group (20 per cent), have developed AustraliaÆs first block cave mine at Northparkes in New South Wales, Australia. This innovative and large scale mining project was taken from a green field site in November 1993 to a fully commissioned block cave mine in December 1997. NorthparkesÆ Endeavour 26 mine is now producing at a rate of 3.9Mt per annum from a 27Mt ore block. Prior to 1993 no history of mining activity existed at Northparkes. The rock had never been blasted and many questions were raised about how it would behave. While it was clear that the Endeavour 26 (E26) orebody contained geotechnical properties appropriate to block caving, the blasting methods required to establish a block cave mine had never been used in Australia and no designs were available. The joint venture partners had no prior experience with block caving and it was immediately apparent that this blasting technology would have to be acquired from foreign sources and applied to the unique local conditions. Conceptual designs for the block cave drill and blast were first drafted in 1994, first issued for drilling in December 1995 and first blasted in January 1996. 470 km of drill metres and four million tonnes of rock were blasted to complete the undercutting project by September 1997. This paper will provide those developing new drill and blast projects with an inside view of how one small technical team solved many design challenges to successfully construct AustraliaÆs first block cave mine under strict quality controls and ambitious time constraints.

A clear understanding of the meanings of terms is important when discussing a project. Whether it is a submission, an investment study, a feasibility study, an environmental impact statement, an estimate, a tender, a contract, or a close-out.report, the need for all parties involved to understand what is under discussion or what has been written is paramount. The clarity of definition and the level of understanding can affect the outcome of the project. It is vital that all parties know what is wanted, what is expected, and what it will cost. This paper draws attention to some of the problems that beset many projects, clients, project managers and contractors, and it is hoped that its presentation will encourage us to pay more attention to defining what it is that is required. Ultimately we should all be the richer for having defined and understood the requirements at the beginning rather than at the end.

The mining industry, and in fact the world, has undergone significant changes in the past five to ten years, ranging from the metals boom, the global financial crisis and the rise and fall of national economies, to name just a few. There has been a focus on sustainable development for projects and operations in the mining industry, mainly pushed onto the industry by communities, governments and other agencies. While sustainable development and operation is a worthy priority for mining operations, discussions with mining industry personnel (with a strong slant on the mineral processing perspective) have shown other issues have surpassed the typical issues of water resources, energy availability and the environment. These include staff turnover and skills shortages, extracting metal from more complex orebodies and the uptake of new step-change technology.A number of key operating mineral processing personnel were interviewed to determine their perspective on the current issues facing the mining industry. Factors of importance in the ntilization of coal fines are mentioned, and the results of flotation tests on coal fines from three important coal seams in New South Wales are presented.INTRODUCTIONEconomic utilization of fine coal is an important problem in the Australian coal industry, particularly as the proportion of fines mined is increasing with progressive mechanization.While the use of uncleaned coal fines may be economic, it may be preferable to beneficiate them, but the most economic process must be selected.For beneficiating coal finer than about 28 mesh, froth flotation can be applied, but mining engineers should avoid practices that may be detrimental to flotation. Such practices include the indiscriminate use of water, particularly that containing a wetting' agent, for dust suppression. In addition, clay stemming in wet conditions may produce slimes which could adsorb on coal surfaces, while the use of oils and greases as well as the application of stone dust and chlorides in roadway consolidation may influence adversely fine coal beneficiation.This paper deals with the application of flotation to samples of fine coal from the Bulli, Greta, and Victoria Tunnel seams. In addition a discussion is given of the mineralogical constitution, size analysis, and degree of liberation of ash constituents of the various samples.COAL SAMPLESRepresentative samples of coal from the Bulli, Greta, and Victoria Tunnel seams were obtained for testing.

The Nokomai Gold Mining Project commenced production in January 1992. The Project continues a history of mining in theNokomai Valley which extended from 1863 to 1942. L & M Mining Limited have held interests in the valley since 1980. In 1990 the Nokomai Joint Venture was formed with the Hore family, the owners of Nokomai Station, to mine a large alluvial gold resource in the valley. The mine is located adjacent to the Mataura Brown Trout fishery and required extensive environmental studies prior to granting of permits. The mine is budgeted to work for 20 months, processing 460 000 m3 of wash material. During this period, contract miners, Downer Mining Limited, will move in excess of seven million cubic metres of overburden from the deposit.

The authors often see problems on mine sites that are due to insufficient feedback between technical discipline silos as the realities on the ground fail to inform the models and plans used to drive resource exploitation. Resource modelling, reserve definition, life-of-mine planning, short-term mine planning and scheduling, mine operations and beneficiation operations are all processes that inform each other, but in many instances feedback between these processes occurs in an ad hoc way and only after problems have come to light.Universal reconciliation uses a multidisciplinary approach across the entire mining value chain to identify both opportunity and loss of value and to maximise operational performance. This paper will look at the operational effectiveness of universal reconciliation and will outline the important elements that make it successful, including how to map out the detail underpinning modelling, planning and execution processes. We do this by documenting the physical processes, logical work practices, organisational roles and responsibilities, data origin and quality, working assumptions and information management practices at an operation. The results quickly show how misinformation and assumption causes suboptimal decisions to be taken, where inefficiencies exist and what the opportunity is to remedy these issues.A universal reconciliation study opens up an opportunity for stakeholders to reassess how the operation should be run and how operational effectiveness should be measured. Clear envelopes for reconciliation become obvious and questions about the practicality and data quality can be addressed.A reconciliation code of practice is a key element of a successful universal reconciliation project and the authors outline the important aspects that will provide an operating model, showing the effectiveness of the resource and reserve modelling, the practicality of the mine planning and scheduling practices, how well the mine operations team are executing these schedules and how effective the processing area is given what it is fed. Most importantly, a system that allows operations time to react before the losses become systemic and that is based on identifying early warnings from hard data when these processes start to wobble is outlined. The creation of an accurate and precise enough database requires the collection of many representative samples, subsampling and assaying them without destroying their integrity. The selection and implementation of sampling protocols often lead to severe difficulties, making the unaware practitioner vulnerable to massive exploration, feasibility and operating failures. Therefore, there is no substitute for a good understanding of the Theory of Sampling (TOS). Either because of ignorance, or because of short-term economic reasons, failure to comply with many stringent conditions can be devastating for the validity of a feasibility study, leading to false evaluations, to the abandonment of a viable property, or to the exploitation of one that is not profitable. All these failures have something in common: insufficient duplicate sampling, subsampling and assaying were performed; very important, preliminary heterogeneity tests were never performed; for short-term economic reasons, poor sampling and subsampling protocols were selected, second-class sampling systems and weightometers were installed and poor preventive maintenance and cleaning were implemented;and sampling experts were called only when the project was obviously in trouble. The conclusion is clear: in due time, iterative auditing of sampling practices is an insurance policy against massive financial losses for the company involved. A complete, comprehensive 100 point checklist of sampling Quality Assurance and Quality Control is provided, so critically important details to ensure success are not forgotten.

Sensor-based ore sorting is being increasingly used to reduce the amount of low-grade and waste material processed in mineral concentrators. This type of preconcentration provides bottom-line benefits to users by reducing the amount of energy, water and consumables, as well as reducing capital cost. Existing operations can increase metal production, while previously uneconomic deposits and low-grade stockpiles can also be exploited. The technology can also be used to separate ore types for selective processing. The path to implementing sensor-based sorting may include:• geometallurgical evaluation• first inspection testing to investigate sensor response• bench-scale testing where sensor selection is not obvious or for difficult applications• performance testing in full scale sensor-based sorting machines• larger scale site-based piloting with a temporary semi-mobile plant installation. Sorting requires material to be suitably prepared and presented to the machines and typically this consists of crushing and screening to limit top size and optimise liberation. However, where material streams are suitably sized and prepared, additional equipment may not be required (e.g. the sorting of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) Mill pebble streams).This paper presents a case study of economic upgrading of gold ore, by preconcentrating with sensor-based ore sorting. The case study examines sorting amenability, test work, the feasibility study through to implementation, with associated flow sheet development. The development process is analysed and evaluated with a view to rationalising the process for development of future projects. Achieving quick underground access after the completion of an open pit mine can be critical to maintaining project value and ensuring regular ore feed to the mill. This paper outlines the design and construction for two portals in an active open pit to commence underground development quickly whilst installing appropriate ground control to maintain long term access in an uncertain setting. Implementation of the portal designs was complicated by the change in underground design from hangingwall access to footwall access late in the life of the open pit due to preferable ground conditions. The portal locations did not have easy access for ground support installation integrated into the pit design due to the timing of the underground design changes. Practical implementation of the ground support systems subsequently became a key part of the project. Intact rock strength, rock mass characteristics, gradational weathering / alteration profile and structural information were modelled against pit displacement monitoring as the basis from which the portals were located and ground support schemes designed. Conditions around one of the portals necessitated numerical modelling to estimate the appropriate level of ground control for long term stability. The design was completed whilst the open pit was actively on-going and the portal areas not entirely exposed. The rock mass assessment and analysis for the two portals indicated different ground support scheme capacities would be required. The expected level of control for one of the portals also necessitated the use of monitoring with extensometers and load cells to ensure the rock mass response and ground support scheme performed as planned. Construction of the portals demonstrates the benefit of a considered design process, a plan which allows practical installation of ground support schemes where access is limited, the benefit of ongoing monitoring to ensure performance remains within design limits and the challenges involved working within an active pit with limited floor space.

The Olympic Dam mine utilises 1.1 m to 1.4 m diameter raise bores for generating the initial slot void for most production stopes. Slot raise bores generally span two development levels ranging from 30 m to 50 m in height. Raise bores are reamed upward and typically leave a cap of rock equivalent to two times the raise bore diameter on the drill level (minimum 3 m). This provides safe access over the cap for subsequent production activities. It is therefore critical to ensure robust falling object protection for personnel accessing underneath, and in the vicinity of the raise bore void on the lower level. Recently, a number of mesh failures have occurred at Olympic Dam as a result of falling rock from the underside of the cap and raise walls. In addition, as Olympic Dam transitions to deeper and more challenging ground conditions, rockfall-off onto the raise bore protection mesh is anticipated to increase in frequency. This paper discusses the evolution of raise bore protection mesh used at Olympic Dam and presents results from recent site-based drop testing. This impact testing was carried out using a built for purpose object to replicate point loading and shear failure of mesh wires. Testing was also carried out on an improved mesh design which utilises two layers of Geobrugg high-tensile MINAX mesh. Results from the drop testing suggest an improvement in performance of the raise bore protection mesh is realised with the updated design.

The Grao Para and Rio Maria greenstone banded iron formations (BIFs), within the Carajas mineral province, exhibit distinct lithological and petrographic fabrics, together with pronounced differences in their surface expression, real thickness, iron grade and tonnage. These geological differences support a new model for the regional distribution of iron formations in the Carajas Mineral Province.

Sishen uses a state-of-the-art tracking system to track material from its position in blast blocks through various stockpiles and crushers. Qualities are blended directly to the crusher as opposed to blending from stockpiles. This poses an interesting challenge to the planning department to simulate these conditions. The software used in these simulations are Whittle 4X and Maximiser for long-term planning, Xpac for medium-term planning and Mine Works Planner for short-term planning. Geological models and mine design layouts utilise Surpac. Sishen introduced Xpac a number of years ago; the system has developed and changed over the years. With the Sishen Expansion Project (SEP), which aims to utilise low-grade material, major changes to the planning process have to occur. SEP requires that the mine have two different plants, which utilise two different ROM feeds and have different beneficiation curves. Xpac is used to produce a rolling 18-month plan, which is as close to actual operations as possible. In order to do this, the simulations have to take into account the plants beneficiation curves, stockpile movements, hauling distance and equipment needs. On top of this, the schedule has to continually consider specifications for Fe and the contaminants. Plant yields also have to be kept within a certain bandwidth. Xpac is used to simulate the above parameters, as well as generate the raw data required to produce a mine budget. The paper will also show how the 18-month planning process and subsequent planning processes are measured and aligned. Xpac has proved to be an excellent tool to achieve these goals.

Mining is experiencing a difficult period of low profitability and declining productivity. To achieve sustainability, mining companies are challenged with improving output, quality and safety while decreasing costs. At the same time, organisations are having to manage a workforce in which individuals no longer accept a traditional style of management, employees prefer more flexible employment, and diversity within teams is becoming the expected norm.Increasing organisational diversity has been shown to have a positive impact on performance and therefore sustainability. Gender diversity and equality between working men and women is the area most studied in this regard. Executives are becoming more aware of the correlation between gender diversity and performance with some larger organisations having dedicated resources to increase the number and status of women in their organisations. Despite this, limited improvement in gender equality is apparent globally over the last decade with some industries, including mining, going backwards. So why is this the case and what other strategies are available?In 2015, the United Nations Women National Committee Australia (UN Women NCA) in conjunction with Autopia released a white paper discussing the lack of visible change in gender equality despite the widespread implementation of merit-based personnel management strategies. Using research from around the world and thoughts from influential government, education and business leaders, the paper ‘Rethinking Merit’ debunks the myth of the meritocracy. It provides a number of recommendations for organisations committed to improving their performance and sustainability through diversity, including a variety of real-life company examples, instead of relying solely on merit-based decision-making.This paper takes the recommendations of ‘Rethinking Merit’ and applies them to the mining industry. It shows the relevance that rethinking merit has for the industry and why applying the recommendations can result in an increase in diversity, therefore enabling greater performance and sustainability of mining companies. This paper provides case studies from Aurizon, Iluka Resources and BHP Billiton and, as a guide for managers, a generic diversity strategy designed to be implemented alongside traditional merit-based personnel management techniques.CITATION:Hobbs, K, 2016. As part of its operations Hamersley Iron operates a heavy medium Concentrator to upgrade low grade, unsaleable iron ore to produce saleable lump and fines products. Firstly, the attempts at delivering a blended feed in both chemical and physical characteristics are presented. Improvements in blending controls are shown to have given process performance improvements. Secondly, improvements to the feed preparation section are detailed. These alterations are providing a much cleaner feed to the subsequent processing stages.

The discussion which followed the publication of my paper by the formert has, I think, enhanced its value. It may therefore be of interest to members of our Australasian Institute, who are not members of the Institution of Mining and Metallurgy, if I give a synopsis of the discussion.My attention was drawn to the fact that my paper did not make clear the extent of the improvement in furnace operations, which followed the use of coke of high quality; this comment applied more particularly to the lead content of slag. The recent (2005) amendments to the Resource Management Act 1991 have made it clear that there is no obligation on an applicant to consult. However the importance and value in consulting with the community, particularly before commencing a major project, cannot be understated.   This paper looks at the provisions of the Resource Management Act as they relate to consultation and public participation in the process, and will discuss the benefits of consultation both before an application is filed and following the filing of the application. Engaging with the local community can help shape a project to better fit the community, engender support and address opposition. In short, taking the extra step to what is legally required, can help smooth what is potentially a bumpy road. Examples in practice of the value of consultation are given.
