Many projects fail because project performance in unfavourable economic conditions was not anticipated at the investment decision stage. This type of failure may have been avoided through the selection of a strategy that enables the project to perform well under a range of possible future economic conditions (a ærobustÆ strategy); rather than an æoptimalÆ strategy for expected future conditions that will never eventuate. This paper describes a method of rapidly generating mine plans for a number of project strategies, and then evaluating it against a representative range of equally likely economic conditions. The key performance indicators derived for each strategy are the mean value and the distribution of values (variance). A prudent investor will identify prospective strategies not only on the merit of highest mean values (as a proxy for economic reward), but also on the probability of not meeting specified investment hurdles (a proxy for risk). A robust strategy will achieve its financial objective even under adverse economic variations. This paper focuses on the effect of commodity price uncertainty; particularly around the choice of mining and processing capacity levels. Results from enumerating 2000 prices scenarios against 63 strategy combinations show how processing and mining capacity can be manipulated to manage the risk-reward trade-off.

A major Ventilation Upgrade Project commenced at the Fosterville Gold Mine (FGM) in 2017 to service the ongoing ventilation requirements of the underground mining operation. The project consists of three large diameter ventilation raises totalling 1100 metres, and new axial primary ventilation fans to upgrade the mine ventilation system. With a mining depth of 1200 metres and a thermal gradient of approximately 2.7 °C per 100 metres of depth, the completion of the Ventilation Upgrade Project is key to the ongoing success at FGM. The Ventilation Upgrade Project will allow continued mining, including high-grade gold deposits, lower in the mine where heat is increasing. Figure 1 below illustrates the underground workings at FGM, and provides a general view of the ventilation upgrade works to establish the new exhaust system from the lower workings to surface. Whilst raisebore pilot drilling the H4760 Return Air Rise (RAR) from surface to 395 metres, the raisebore drill string became stuck in the raisebore pilot hole at approximately 300 metres down hole, presenting a significant technical problem and delays to the project. This Case Study provides an overview of the recovery process undertaken at FGM including the recovery of the stuck drill string. The value of the stuck in-hole equipment, the investment in the shaft site preparation, the collar stabilisation, the underground development to the base of the ventilation raise, the surface footprint prepared for the Primary Fans construction and the limited available space on the site were all motivations to recover the raisebore drill sting and ultimately recover the ventilation raise location. More importantly, the long lead-time required should a new shaft location be the final solution, and the delay this would incur to the ventilation upgrade was unacceptable. Recovery of the drill string was not possible using the capability of the Contractor’s Raise Drill. An alternative method for freeing the drill string was required. A significant amount of engagement with industry was undertaken to seek out potential solutions and draw from the experience of others. All methodologies available were considered and assessed. Ultimately, after several attempts at freeing the raisebore drill string using various methodologies, Adams Drillers and Clear Cut Interventions were engaged to provide a turnkey recovery solution.

The steel industry continues to explore and demonstrate technologies that decrease its greenhouse gas emissions, especially in blast furnace ironmaking where alternate operating conditions will be required. As the furnace has been optimised over many years, it is approaching the minimum fuel rate possible with coke and Pulverised Coal Injection (PCI). Alternative operating conditions are therefore required to further decrease greenhouse gas emissions. Because of this, hydrogen has been proposed as a reducing agent in the blast furnace. Injection of hydrogen through the tuyeres was assessed using a comprehensive 2D blast furnace global model. The model was calibrated to a blast furnace operating with PCI as a base case and various approaches to hydrogen injection assessed, with a particular focus on displacing PCI. The maximum hydrogen injection rate of 19.5 kg H2 per tonne of hot metal was predicted, limited by decreases in the raceway adiabatic flame temperature and top gas temperature. Internal blast furnace conditions, such as gas composition and reduction degree were also predicted. Holistic analysis was performed to estimate the effectiveness of hydrogen injection on reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Based on these results, the changes in blast furnace operation and emissions under hydrogen injection are discussed.

Raise boring is a critical aspect of mining at Xstrata Copper’s Mount Isa Copper Operations (MICO). MICO’s internal raise boring department regularly develops ventilation rises, orepasses and stope cut-off rises and reams approximately 2500 m per annum. Developed, trialled and implemented as standard practice over the past two years, procedural changes in constructing the raise bore machine’s foundations have significantly reduced operator exposure to raise boring’s inherent risks of working around open holes and manual handling. An additional cost benefit of this newly-adopted procedure is derived from reducing the likelihood of damaging the machine while de-rigging.When conforming to standard industry raise boring practices, exposure to an open hole begins when the reamer breaks through the concrete pad and ends when it is removed from the hole – a process which, depending on the size of the hole and the raise boring machine, can take up to three days to complete. Although wearing fall restraint equipment, operators working on and around the raise bore machine during de-rigging are continually exposed to the risk of falling from heights. In contrast, MICO’s newly-developed and successfully-implemented presink raise boring system reduces this exposure to a maximum of four hours, regardless of hole size. Exposure to manual handling hazards is also substantially reduced as the presink procedure eliminates manual placement of a 100 kg drill bit under the machine to commence pilot-hole drilling. Outcomes of implementing the presink System at MICO have been so beneficial that it is now standard procedure for all reaming in excess of 1 m diameters.

Global iron ore demand, sparked by ChinaÆs rapid industrialisation and emergence as the worldÆs newest steel market, has seen iron ore groups investing heavily in production capacity as well as infrastructure. The success of these new projects depends heavily on reliability, competitiveness and quality control in an increasingly demanding trading environment. Furthermore, the iron ore industry continues to improve its competitiveness in mining practices, technology innovation and management processes. The continued fine tuning of these sectors will be critical to the success of the industry in the years ahead, and this mining sector will continue to demand process improvements from their service suppliers to maintain competitiveness. Automation offers a real solution to these demands. A crucial quality control element in mining, beneficiation, stockpiling and shipping stages is ensuring representative samples of ore are taken along each step of the process. When these samples reach the laboratory it is imperative that the sample is representative of the entire stream and that no induced errors occur. Examples of automation start with mechanical primary and secondary samplers in the run-of-mine processes through to sample tower and laboratory crushers, dividers and collectors. Automation is widely used in many forms to provide reliable and repeatable samples for analysis whilst providing a safer working environment. Laboratory automation systems in use today vary from simple linear systems to sophisticated robotic cells. Sample automation in the iron ore industry has resulted in many benefits for both producers and their customers. The most significant benefits have come in the form of higher safety standards whilst reducing sample error, sample handling and sample contamination during collection. These benefits have been further augmented by reliability and repeatability of automating the final sample preparation and analysis stage. Today these benefits are reflected in reduced costs of sampling and improvement in both turnaround time and quality of results, whilst complying with Australian safety and ISO sampling standards.

This paper presents the design and construction approach adopted for the widening and stabilisation of the existing decline tunnel forming part of the Scenic Railway Upgrade project at Katoomba in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales (NSW), Australia. The overall upgrade project included new trains and track, rebuilding of the top and bottom station and installation of a new winch and control system. All the works were undertaken over an eight-month period between August 2012 and April 2013 as part of a $30 M upgrade of the railway.The railway is the steepest cable-driven line in the world at a maximum of 52° extending over 350 m and descending from the escarpment into the Jamison Valley. The track was built in the 1880s for coal haulage and is recognised as a remarkable engineering achievement for its time. The tunnel section extends for about 120 m at the start of the decline and is about 3.5 m wide and 3.5 m high. The tunnel was excavated principally within medium to high strength Banks Wall sandstone and given that the widening only involved about 200 mm of trimming of the crown and sidewall this aspect of the work was not a critical support issue, except at the upslope portal. The tunnel crown however is entirely intersected by a major near vertical shear zone which presented significant challenges for the tunnel stabilisation works.Three-dimensional laser survey scanning was used for definition of the tunnel clearance envelope for the widening, and also to subdivide the tunnel into various geotechnical sections to assist in support design. Specifically oriented rock bolts extending beyond the shear zone into stable rock were used together with mesh, shotcrete and extensive strip drains and flushing points for drainage of the shear zone.Unique aspects of this project were included into the specifications and work methods. This included construction of a mobile working platform for tunnel works, the use of dry shotcrete application, difficult access for rock bolting and limiting vibration during the tunnel trimming works due to the risks associated with crown instability. The works also took into consideration particular safety constraints/work exclusion areas to address the risk of detachment of rock which could mobilise downslope to the track area below. This was required because other works were in progress such as micro-piling and bottom platform works which were being undertaken concurrently with the tunnel work.CITATION:Rosin, S G and Hughes, A, 2014. Microprobe analyses of electrum grains in some Hauraki Au-Ag deposits indicate that gold fineness is in the range of 500 - 800 (50 - 80 per cent Au), but for most deposits the range is usually narrower than this. The electrums contain minor amounts (<0.8 per cent) of copper, arsenic, antimony, mercury, iron, and sulphur. Platinum and palladium were analysed for but were not detected (detection limit 0.24 per cent for Pt or Pd). For some deposits (eg Waihi), the average fineness values for the analysed electrums correspond fairly well with the electrum fineness determined by assay during the historic mining operations.

"The paper introduces the structure and work processes of outside auger hollow claw tipped mechanical sampler for coal. Twenty sets of claw tipped sampler performance tests show that: The design of inner hollow cylinder-type (?180 mm) can ensure to take a coal sample with nominal top size of 60 mm. Built-in self-cleaning piston pusher ensures no adherence and blocking of the sample. The operation practices show that the mechanical sampler can operate in order for taking coal sample with up to 16 per cent of total moisture. Claw closing design can avoid sample leaking or spilling during the claw lifting and ensure the integrity of primary increment. Ultrasonic positioning device makes the sampler capture the materials no less than 10 cm from the bottom of the wagons, basically meeting the requirement taking full depth of the sample. The precision and bias test indicates that the moisture and ash have no relative bias under the sampling process; the sampling precision is in accordance with the requirement in IS013909.At present, the spiral mechanical sampler is widely used for coal sampling but there are many limitations during application, for example: It is difficult to capture a large size sample, so the size range of a coal sample taken is limited. There is easy adhering or blocking for high moisture coal, which will result in the mixture of different increments, wear of sampler and the difficulties for cleaning and maintenance of sampler. It is difficult to capture the coal sample at lower than 30 cm from the bottom of the wagons, in order to avoid damage of the vehicle. It is possible for coal sample loss and spilling during the sampler lifting, due to the unsealed sampler.For the outside auger hollow claw tipped mechanical sampler designed for solving the above problems, the opening distance of the claw is the opening size of the sampler and makes the size range of the coal sample to be taken wide. During sampling, the two pieces of claws open and the sampler rotates vertically downward to capture an adequate coal sample after reaching the specific point. Then the two pieces of claws close tight automatically to ensure there is no coal leaking or spilling. Block cave fragmentation has been documented in the literature to have a significant impact on mine design, performance and downstream material handling and comminution processes. Due to this impact, emphasis is placed on the premining prediction and subsequent quantification of primary and secondary fragmentation distribution. This paper discusses the fragmentation prediction and assessment methodology employed at the Ridgeway Deeps (RWD) and Cadia East PC1 (CEPC1) cave operations.Prediction of drawpoint fragmentation was based on an iterative process, which relied on an improved quantitative and qualitative understanding of the rock mass as the mining project developed. In particular, the collection of scanline mapping data provided detailed information in relation to discontinuity trace length, persistence, termination characteristics and large-scale planarity. This allowed an improved estimation of select modelling input parameters, in particular ‘block forming’ discontinuity orientation and strength characteristics.With the start of production, drawpoint fragmentation assessment was undertaken using digital image processing (DIP) techniques for drawpoint extracted tonnes up to 61 000 t. This technique provided a consistent methodology to estimate changes in fragmentation as the block cave matured. It can generally be concluded that the measured mean fragmentation distribution became finer as drawpoint tonnage increased. The incremental change in fragmentation distribution (per 10 000 t) was not uniform, with step changes evident. In addition, for a given geotechnical domain and drawpoint tonnage, the measured fragmentation distribution range was found to vary significantly. A possible explanation for these observations may relate to the disturbed flow behaviour noted from marker experiments at RWD and CEPC1. These experiments indicate that material reporting at the drawpoints (for any given tonnage extracted) may be sourced from highly variable heights within the cave, with finer material preferentially reporting.A comparison between predicted and measured drawpoint fragmentation distribution indicated two general findingsa close match between predicted and measured distributions for material greater than 1.0 m3an under prediction of finer material passing 0.5 m3 relative to measured.The findings would indicate that the fragmentation modelling frameworks utilised at both RWD and CEPC1 were deficient at predicting the percentage of finer material for both primary and secondary fragmentation.The wide range in fragmentation distributions observed in the measured results, and the discrepancy between modelled and measured fines should be considered in the design of mine (material flow, extraction level geometry and draw rate), material handling (crushing and material movement), and downstream milling (comminution and metal recovery) processes for future block cave mines at the Cadia Valley Operations (CVO). With respect to fragmentation distribution range, a sensitivity analysis should be undertaken for these design considerations, with a range in predicted fragmentation distributions investigated (for example, lower quartile, mean and upper quartile). For future mines with similar geotechnical and mining conditions, the calibration of fines should be considered in any fragmentation distribution prediction to match those measured previously.CITATION:Brunton, I, Lett, J L and Thornhill, T, 2016. With the bell-less top (BLT) charging system replacing the centuries old double bell charging method, the furnace efficiency has been greatly improved together with considerable reduction in the furnace down time and operational problems. But still there are many draw-backs which need further attention to achieve better efficiency and operational effectiveness. The performance and operational problems of the BLTs have been highlighted and possible solutions to overcome some of the major problems are discussed.

As we look back through the Proceedings of our Institute, we find few papers dealing directly with education and recruitment. Apart from papers prepared in the earlier decades of this century, there was little written discussion on the subject until the 1950s, and mostly this was by the professionals, the professors and lecturers who staff the various mining schools of Australia and New Zealand.I use the term "mining school" in its fullest and widest meaning, to cover all aspects from ore to metal, and not in the narrow meaning that the word might imply. At the same time, in restricting the parameters of this address to "ore to metal" I recognize that I am excluding the very important fields of physical metallurgy and materials science; this I do because there is a limit to the quantum of any paper, and in fact these subjects are more closely allied to the use rather than the production of metals.However, the lack of education papers does not mean that education has been regarded lightly by The Institute. Sir Maurice Mawby in his presidential address in 1968, reminded us of the original objectives of The Institute, one 'of which was, "To promote the arts and sciences connected with the economical production of the useful minerals and metals ...". Our present Royal Charter is more specific when it says that one of the objects of The Institute is, ". . . to encourage the study of engineering with special reference to mining and metallurgy ...". If we recognize that in itself membership of our Institute is one means of continuing our education, it is true that education has been a concern of The Institute since it was first founded.Occasionally in recent years, an intrepid president has ventured to tell the academics what the industry needs, and he generally does this in a "no-question" situation! However it is encouraging that those entrusted with mineral education have always accepted this; they keep coming back for more and ask us to tell them what we want, and they will provide it.In 1948 a considerable dialogue on education was initiated when a standing committee was established by the Council of The Institute. In the period 1949 to 1951, three papers were prepared under the chair...

Multiple indicator kriging (MIK) has been used in the minerals industry for some decades. As one of the non-linear estimation methodologies, MIK has advantages related to resolving multiple or mixed populations, high variability data and strongly skewed distributions. Applying the MIK methodology requires a lot more effort when compared to other non-linear methodologies, for example localised uniform conditioning. This is due not only to the variogram modelling for multiple indicators, but the validation is also very important because the panel model is fundamental for follow-up work, including the generation of recoverable resources at the local or SMU scale. Apart from this, only a few reported case studies of MIK have documented post-processing of the estimated modelled distribution, representing the probability distribution at point scale at un-sampled locations. The MIK post processing should include the change of support from the point scale to the panel scale, and then the extraction of quantile values from the panel conditional cumulative distribution function (CCDF) for localisation of grades into the SMUs within each panel, based on a ranking estimate marking the SMUs from high to low. In this paper, we present a case study on a gold deposit with the MIK method with full-post processing implemented for recoverable resources. The MIK point estimate was carried out with an indirect lognormal change of support from point to panel scale, and localisation was done with a custom script. The localised uniform conditioning (LUC) method was also applied for comparison purposes. The comparison shows that MIK has advantages compared to LUC when comes to capturing the high-grades, especially when mixed or varying anisotropy is present within the mineralisation.

Dust suppression is an important environmental control in most mining operations. The poorest quality water within a mine site is often used for dust suppression since it provides an effective means of reducing the volume of poor quality water. The ultimate fate of contaminants or salinity associated with water used in dust suppression is important to consider for optimising water management and assessing the environmental impact and life span and maintenance requirements of roads associated with dust suppression.The propensity for remobilisation of contaminants or salts depends on a range of factors such as the application rate, climate, road construction, water chemistry and soil geochemistry. This paper describes a typical study approach which could be used to assess the short- and long-term impacts of mine water application for dust suppression. The steps of the study are: reviewing the environmental setting, estimating water requirements for dust suppression, reviewing source water chemistry, developing a mass balance model and assessing the mobility and fate of contaminants with a geochemical model.This approach identifies which salt species are likely to form and whether they are prone to remobilisation. It is possible to quantitatively assess the risk of exporting contaminants or salt from roads and to refine the dust suppression strategy to minimise the environmental risk. The approach can be applied at mine sites to address regulator concerns, aid decision-making and improve the understanding of short- and long-term environmental risks.CITATION:Gimber, C, 2013. A study was carried out to compare the environmental impacts of a number of process routes for lead and zinc metal production from sulphide ores using Life Cycle Assessment methodology and based on average industry data derived from the literature. The processes investigated were:blast furnace production of lead; Imperial Smelting Process for lead and zinc production; and electrowinning of zinc with the mining and mineral processing stages common to all three routes. The effect of a number of process variables, namely ore grade, fuel source for electricity generation and efficiency of generation, on the environmental impacts was also examined. The environmental impact categories considered in the study were:total (or full cycle) energy consumption; Global Warming Potential (GWP); and Acidification Potential (AP). The results of the study show that when produced separately, zinc production is more than twice as energy intensive as lead production (viz 48 and 20 MJ/kg respectively), however when produced jointly by the Imperial Smelting process, the energy intensity of the two metals is not all that dissimilar (viz 36 and 32 MJ/kg respectively). The metal production and refining stage was found to make the greatest contribution to the overall environmental impacts for all three processes. The study also highlighted the importance of taking a life cycle approach when comparing the environmental impacts of different processes.

Mining operations have large power requirements. The biggest consumers of energy are the drives for the mills located in the concentrators. Assuming that the decision is made on how many mills are needed and how big these mills will be, it can be determined how these mills should be driven. The decision as to which drive should be applied depends on design limits for different mechanical or electrical drives, anticipated operation modes, capital expenditure optimisation and lifecycle cost optimisation.The task for the engineer specifying the drive equipment is to select a drive solution that can debottleneck the operation, avoid interruption of production and enhance the reliability of the process. At the same time, the engineer must choose a design that enables cost optimisation either in a single investment or in relation to the total cost of ownership (TCO).This paper outlines different mechatronic or electric drive alternatives for tube or horizontal mills applied in the mining industry, along with their advantages and disadvantages. In 1961, West Australian Petroleum's Eneabba No. 1 bore encountered 22 seams of coal totalling 40 ft in thickness between the depths of 6373 ft and 6441 ft. On analysis, this coal had a similar calorific value (8000-HOOO B.T.U./lb, assuming 20 per cent water) to the coal from the Collie Coalfield, Western Australia's only known area of commercially exploitable coal. Being buried to depths in excess of 6000 ft, the coal at Eneabba had developed weakly-coking properties, and thus, although much younger than the Permian coals of Collie, gave promise of being a major potential source of power for Western Australia.West Australian Petroleum undertook a programme of stratigraphic drilling and shallow test drilling to determine whether this coalhorizon persisted into the outcrop of the Lower Jurassic sediments in the Hill River district, 140 miles NNW. of Perth, and, if it was present, if the quality and quantity of the coal would warrant development of the deposits by open cutting. The coal horizon was identified in the near surface, but the poor quality of the coal and the complexity of the structure made development (in the area examined) uneconomic at the time.A strong seismic reflection in the Eneabba area occurs at the same depth as the Jurassic coals. This event originates within the upper beds of the Lower Jurassic and it is probable that the velocity contrast between the higher velocity siltstones and the very low velocity coals enhances this very strong, distinctive seismic reflection.This event can be followed on continuous seismic data over a large area of the northern Perth Basin, from 13 miles SE. of Dongara to 20 miles SW. of Coorow. It can be followed from a depth of 4000 ftnear Dongara to over 17,000 ft to the SE., so development of thisvast potential source of power will depend on the economics ofprocesses being developed for the production of power from theburning of coal seams in situ.INTRODUCTIONThe discovery of 22 seams of economically useable coaltotalling 40 ft in thickness in the Lower J urassic sedimentsof the Eneabba No. 1 bore (Fig. 1) led to the search forthese seams at economically workable depths. The Golden Bar pit is part of the Macraes mine, the largest gold mine in New Zealand. The Macraes mine is mainly developed in the late metamorphic Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone. However, the Golden Bar pit was developed in a mineralised zone about 200 m structurally above the Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone. The host rocks are dominated by massive quartzofeldspathic schist (5 - 10 m layers) with minor intercalations (1 - 5 m scale) of micaceous schist. All the host schist has disseminated pyrite (micron to mm scale) from pervasive late metamorphic hydrothermal alteration.   In addition, there has been more localised (metre scale) relatively intense hydrothermal alteration controlled by shears subparallel to foliation. Gold occurs in three types of mineralised rock: silicified schist, which dominates, fissile black sheared rock, and cross-cutting quartz veins. There are three principal structural zones in the deposit: 1.   a strongly sheared micaceous and graphitic zone at the base of the structural sequence; 2.   a weakly deformed schist zone cut by relatively flat-lying (= 20¦ dipping) quartz veins; and 3.   a stack of imbricated schist pods and deformed silicified schist confined between two sub-parallel low-angle (ca. 30¦) shears.   These structural zones were juxtaposed during thrust deformation. The lower black shear zone has m-scale folding and over-thrusting packages, kink folding and foliation stacking with associated striations that imply west-directed thrusting. Striations and imbrication geometry between the upper two shears imply oblique thrusting that was directed towards the west. Post-mineralisation normal faults locally disrupt the mineralised zone. The Golden Bar pit mineralised zone has some of the structural and mineralogical characteristics of the main Hyde-Macraes Shear Zone, and may be genetically related.

Though many mining and mineral processing companies have embraced the principles of sustainable development (SD), there is still a significant challenge of applying these in a practical sense, either in plant design or as part of day-to-day operations. The high-level nature of sustainability concepts often do not translate easily into workable activities or business case evaluations. This makes it difficult for engineers and company decision makers to understand whether their actions are making a contribution to sustainable development and a long-term business case. While several organisations have their own SD tools that can, to a degree, help identify these opportunities, they are largely ad-hoc and lack the necessary thoroughness to defensibly value these opportunities. Recognising these serious shortcomings, the Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) has undertaken the development and trial applications of SUSOP« (SUStainable OPerations), a new concept that is somewhat analogous to HAZOP and the wider risk and safety frameworks used in projects today. The key goal of the SUSOP« research project is to produce a holistic, systematic and rigorous framework for project development, capturing, recording and evaluating SD opportunities and constraints against a chosen sustainability structure (eg Five Capitals). SUSOP« is being developed through an iterative process with input from research institutions and engineering companies. This integrated approach ensures that SUSOP«, in its final form, will have the academic rigour and industry realism required to assist the resource sector contribute to societal sustainability by embedding the concepts and processes into the design and operation of their assets in a meaningful and practical manner. SUSOP« has created much traction with both engineering companies and mining and minerals operators. This conference paper presents an overview of the SUSOP« framework and its current suite of processes as well as highlighting, through practical case studies, its capability to incorporate SD considerations at different phases of an engineering project's development.
