At present the source of virgin iron for steel produced in New Zealand is titanomagnetite extracted from titaniferous beachsands. Some of these beachsand deposits contain extractable quantities of ilmenite as well as titanomagnetite and both minerals represent challenging sources of vanadium and titanium products in addition to iron. This study looks at some theoretical aspects of smelting these ores directly with coal rather than with electric power, and takes into consideration the properties of the raw materials, the thermodynamics of possible process routes and the background of the economics involved.

Previous methods for measuring the flow of solids in Jnrdraulic conveying have not considered the important effects of slip velocity and particle concentration. In this paper an extension of the method proposed byShirato et al. (J. Chem. Engng. 'Japan, 1: 164-167) for determining mass flow in a vertical conduit is outlined.The present method consists of measuring' the volumetric flow of the slurry (by a magnetic flow meter for instance) and the density of the slurry in two pipe sections of different diameters. Effects of variation of slip withparticle concentration, not previously considered, are allowed.Problems involved in estimating the density of a slurry from differential pressure measurement are discussed.The major problem is the uncertainties in estimating frictional losses due to the wall in two-phase flows. The greater reliability of a more "direct" technique, such as by 'Y-ray absorption, for measuring solid concentration is emphasized.

The design of a mine should aim to optimise the market value by maximising revenues whilst minimising costs. In open pit mining, the nature of the extraction technique translates this objective into the maximum recovery of reserves while minimising waste extraction subject to technical, economical and safety constraints. Since the introduction by Lerchs and Grossman, in 1965, of a model that is now considered a classic in the area, open pit design has reached a level of maturity and acceptance by industry. These models are being used on a regular basis by designers and planners.This paper proposes a new alternative model for open pit design. It is based on genetic algorithms (GA) and exploits a reduction of the number of decision variables of the more traditional techniques. The novel approach provides more flexibility than traditional models; it can also be extended to consider planning problems that traditional open pit design models are not capable of handling. The algorithm has been designed for two dimensional problems and tested in a simple instance. The results obtained in this simple test are encouraging and are a good supporting argument for the development of a GA model capable of handling three-dimensional (3D) instances. The model presented in this paper is just a first step towards a full GA to solve the pit design problem and it is believed that novel tools like the one presented herein could become great allies in tackling challenging problems in open pit design, an illustration of such a challenging problem is presented and discussed.

Vertical retreat open stoping (VROS) is a variation of sublevel open stoping (SLOS) that has been introduced at Cannington to minimise the influence of subvertical geological structures during stope extraction. The first application of VROS is described, where structures within the stope resulted in a change in firing sequence and the extraction of two complete sublevels in a single blast. The use of electronic detonators is critical to the success of VROS and their application is described. Numerous benefits of using VROS have been identified and are described. To date, eight stopes have been successfully mined using VROS. In addition to the first application of VROS, two further case studies are described.

There is now a new generation of mobile crushing and screening plant systems available which have been developed based on the motivation of reducing truck haulage. Newly designed mobile crushing and screening plant systems have the advantages of mobility, flexibility, economy and reliable performance, making this system very appealing for small- to medium-sized projects or projects where a number of resources are separated by distance.A brief review of the past history and experience with transportable crushing plants provides an insight into some of the issues with transportable plants in mineral processing. A closer look at a simple model based on exploiting small but high-grade orebodies suggests the concept has merit, however there are many more engineering, logistics, legal, technical and management aspects which have limited the application of such a concept in the resource sector. This paper explores the concept in detail and endeavours to analyse the preferred commodities and scenarios under which the concept could be used and the economic and logistical limitations for iron ore. The paper also looks at the risk assessment criteria to be applied in selecting the type of resource projects where the model could be applied successfully. Other aspects considered in this paper are the project planning requirements, technical and economic feasibility, bankability and operability. Reference is made to the operating experience of contractors at a number of sites and feedback from the resource companies as managers of the projects.CITATION:Connelly, D, 2013. Exploration work at the southern flank of the Mt. Coffin diapir has encountered three different types of copper ores: copper carbonate, largely malachite; secondary sulphides, mainly chalcocite replacing pyrite; and a primary arsenopyrite-tennantite-tetrahedrite-chalcopyrite association. The secondary copper ore is occasionally stratiform but mainly erratic at the contact between tillites and siltstones of the Tapley Hill formation.There have been two stages of primary mineralization.1. Arsenopyrite, tennantite, and tetrahedrite occur in siderite veins.2. Revival of the diapirism has caused fracturing and local brecciation of the rimrock and subsequently ascending solutions precipitated chalcopyrite. The chalcopyrite also partly replaced arsenopyrite, tennantite, and tetrahedrite.

Cessation of mining on the Bendigo goldfield makes it evident that, as the older generation fades away, knowledge of the famous Bendigo saddle reefs will be limited in the future by their written records. It is important therefore that the summarised account by D. E. Thomas (1953) in the Geology of Australian Ore Deposits should not be misleading. Fig. 6 in this article is stated to portray a cross section and longitudinal section through a series of gold shoots in the Garden Gully 300 ft. reef. The gold shoot along the capof the saddle reef is represented as extending down the east leg in a series of prongs, with the tips of the prongs about 50 ft. apart. It is the purpose of this note to indicate that this illustration can be suspected to be a diagram of the old stopes instead of a diagram of the distribution of gold in the quartz.The original sketches of Figs. 6 and 7 in Thomas' account were extracted, I believe, from the field note books of H. S. Whitelaw, years after his death in the late twenties. Whitelaw was stationed in the Bendigo office of the Geological Survey of Victoria, carrying out geological surveys of the Bendigo mines. He was there for many years before the Gold Research committee started its investigations in 1916 and he was acutely aware of the problem attached to the distribution of gold in the reefs. He had felt concern that manyauriferous reefs were being mined without adequate study and record and he decided, as he expressed it to me, to pick up what he could as he went along. There can be little doubt that the diagrams of Figs. 6 and 7 are products of this resolve.Opportunities to investigate gold occurrences at Bendigo were limited before 1916 because the field was operated by Manuscript received at The Institute 18th November, 1960.

æSustainabilityÆ is one of those words that has gained more usage in popular discourse than in the dictionary. In fact it is not in many dictionaries at all. Typically, given this, it also seems to mean different things depending on whose lips it emerges from. It is now like a code word in that if people say it, you donÆt have to think about its meaning; it is just æthereÆ and is taken for granted. This is a problem for the mining industry as we are now using the term too and to be effective in what we do, we need to have a reality check and see how those outside who have views on us (æstakeholdersÆ maybe) use it. The core issue seems to be æsustainability of whatÆ: the industry?, a company?, the global environment?, particular ecosystems?, the community? At these levels, the term seems almost meaningless. If we do not even agree on what it is, at least broadly, our communication and possible partnerships for going forward will be difficult to say the least. One reference to æsustainÆ in my thesaurus is: æTo keep from failing during stress or difficultyÆ. This may be a clue to something approaching a common notion. I suggest that to use æsustainabilityÆ we make the following assumptions:that we are talking about human activity aimed at making a living that has an impact on the natural and social environment; that humans must make a living (though what this needs to include is problematic); that the impact of particular activities has been problematic to date and needs to be monitored, altered, stopped, etc; that there is stress on both social and natural environments; and that change can be effected in order that particular activities such as mining minimise their negative effects and maximise their positive. This is why we are taking part in sessions such as this one today. Two more initial observations: First, it strikes me that even with the above assumptions laid out, æsustainabilityÆ and æsustainable developmentÆ are too abstract and general as concepts. We have to break these high and mighty ideals down into workable, bite-size chunks, into practical ways of dealing with the world outside our sites and companies. Second, sustainability, on both sides of the fence, too often focuses on nature and environment as though they are independent of people and community. I would argue, perhaps provocatively, that sustainability is primarily a people issue and has to be tackled as such. I want to look at the overall climate for business today and how it has responded before I return to what we can and need to do as the mining industry to make æsustainabilityÆwork.

The Late Archaean of South AustraliaÆs Gawler Craton contains significant potential for gold resources. The main targets of interest are migmatised gold style systems of which the Challenger deposit is the best known example. This deposit is one of the lower cost gold producers in Australia due to the high-grade, low-tonnage nature of the mineralisation. Structurally controlled, metamorphosed deposit styles are also possible throughout the Archaean of the Gawler Craton, including occurrences within reactivated shear zones. More typical, lower metamorphic grade orogenic gold styles are also possible within greenstone host sequences identified in the central and southern parts of the Gawler Craton.

The Roy Hill Project is an independent integrated port, rail and mine development in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The bankable feasibility study for the project was completed in January 2011 by Roy Hill Holdings Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd. The Project will deliver 55 Mt/a of premium quality iron ore to a rapidly growing market with a mine life of over 27 years. This study is based on exploiting a 1.2 Bt bedded resource of microplaty haematite-rich Marra Mamba, from which 562 Mt of reserves has been delineated to date. A further 1.1 Bt resource of detritals and low grade bedded is proposed to be mined once the bedded high grade resource is depleted. Roy Hill lump and fi ne ore products will compete strongly with other Pilbara products. As a low cost producer, Roy Hill is on track to capture four per cent of the global seaborne traded iron ore market. The project decision to proceed is targeted for Q2 2011 to enable first ore on ship by Q2 2014.

Since 1950 Stockton Open Cast Mine has excavated over 60 million tonnes of Brunner Coal Measures overburden sandstones and mudstones. The current operator, Solid Energy New Zealand, recognises that acidic drainage from this overburden and from historic underground mines has led to depressed pH levels and elevated levels of metals in streams draining the Stockton Plateau. These streams report to the Ngakawau River. To quantify the effects of mine site acid drainage remediation/mitigation on the lower Ngakawau River water quality, a catchment hydrogeochemical model has been field calibrated and ecotoxicology tests have been undertaken. The hydrogeochemical model indicates that pre-mining and present pH values in the lower Ngakawau River are similar but present aluminium and iron concentrations are elevated. Ecotoxicology tests have semi-quantified the critical metal concentrations and interim water quality targets to achieve ecological recovery are presented. Analyses of long-term total suspended solids (TSS) and turbidity monitoring in the lower Ngakawau River and St Patrick's Stream indicate that TSS of 120 mg/L and turbidity of 20 NTU are exceeded for <20% per cent of the time. Hence, specific criteria to protect migratory native fish from turbid water are currently met in the Ngakawau River and St Patrick's Stream.

Two radioisotope techniques suitable for the rapid laboratory determination of the ash content of coal have been tested ou unwashed coal samples from four Australian coal seams. In one techniqne, measurements of backscattered 238Pu L X-rays and iron K X-rays from finely ground coal samples have been combined to determine ash content in uuwashed coals to ±0.5 weight per ce111 ash (ls) for three seams and 0.9 weight per cent ash for the fourth.The second technique, which involves measurements of the transmission by the coal of narrow beams of 241Am 60 keV and 123Ba 356 keV ? rays, requires less sample preparat ion. The ash was determined to within the range of 0.8 to 2.6 weight per cent for the four seams (unwashed coal). For washed coals, errors are expected to be < ±0.5 weight per cent ash.

Most preventive environmental management practices promote proactive integrated approaches to waste management. For example, life cycle assessment is often used to find the ‘hot spots’ of environmental burdens. This kind of approach is often based on generic data and has rarely been used for tailings. Besides, life cycle assessments are less useful for designing operations or simulating changes in the process and consequent environmental outcomes. It is evident that an integrated approach for tailings research linked to better processing options is needed.The aim of this Nextmine™ project is to develop new tailings management models by streamlining orebody characterisation, process optimisation and rehabilitation. We present an integrated tailings management approach and preliminary results from a case study. Combined grinding and flotation models were developed using geometallurgical data from the orebody, to predict the properties of tailings produced under various processing conditions. The modelling scenarios based on the case study data provide the capacity to predict the composition of tailings and the resulting environmental management implications. For example, the type and content of clay minerals in tailings will affect the geotechnical stability and water recovery. An understanding of the way that solutes are transported in mining or natural environments is essential to the development of sound strategies for managing waste disposal. Research on miscible pollutant movement in unsaturated porous media is carried out both experimentally and numerically. Results of numerical modelling are obtained by solving the groundwater flow equation and the solute transport equation. The finite element method is employed and comparisons between simulation results and experimental data are found in remarkable agreement.

"Underground coal mining is the dominant method of extracting thermal and coking coal in the southern and western coalfields of New South Wales. Monitoring mining-related subsidence forms an important component of environmental impact assessments and subsidence management plans, particularly when there are conflicts between the interests and requirements of mining and environment and community groups. However, there are few specific guidelines for monitoring the impacts of subsidence on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, leading to inconsistent policy approaches and highly variable abilities of monitoring programs to accurately detect biological change.This paper highlights the use of a conceptual framework to guide the development of a long-term ecological monitoring program at an underground coalmine in the Western Blue Mountains, New South Wales. Two pilot studies are described: determining the level of observer agreement to assess the condition of a vulnerable tree species (Capertee Stringybark) comparing field sampling methods for detecting a rare heath shrub, Epacris muelleri, using a power analysis to determine sampling intensity requirements.These examples demonstrate that investment in initial pilot studies to test different monitoring approaches can have long-term benefits for stakeholders by more confidently being able to detect potential impacts.CITATION:McCaffrey, N?B,?Glenn, V, Erskine, P?D, Johns,?C?and Fletcher, A?T, 2014. A challenge on many industrial flotation circuits is controlling concentrate mineral grades using measurements that are provided infrequently. The mineral grades in concentrate streams are a critical performance indicator in any industrial flotation circuit. Failure to achieve concentrate mineral grade targets has significant financial consequences on a flotation operation. A violation of gangue mineral grade limits by the concentrator may also result in significant penalties.Online grade analysers which can provide reliable real time grade measurements are essential for effective grade optimisation. The Blue Cube MQi analyser (by Blue Cube Systems) has recently come to prominence for its ability to rapidly determine mineral concentrate grades online and has the benefit of operating in-stream. This has provided excellent insight into the actual process dynamics in the flotation circuit, and hence enabled real-time control and optimisation of concentrate mineral grades.MintekÆs Measurement and Control division, specialising in advanced control solutions for mineral and metallurgical industries, has had the opportunity to link the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser to the measurements provided by the Blue Cube system at the BCL nickel concentrator plant in Botswana. The project focused on stabilising the final concentrate grade while ensuring the final tailings are minimised, resulting in an improved nickel recovery. This site already had the FloatStar Grade-Recovery Optimiser for several years, but the original grade measurement device was unreliable and ultimately failed. The system was reactivated once the Blue Cube system was installed, replacing the old analyser. This paper describes the key components of the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) mine design and the development and construction status of the mine. Drawpoint production from GBC will be initiated in 2018 following the closure of the Grasberg open pit. Full production of 160 000 t/d is planned for 2024, which will make it a 20-year time period between initial access development in 2004 and full production.Diluted ore reserves are about 1 Bt at a grade of 1.0 per cent Cu and 0.78 g/t Au. The mine plans some 2400 drawpoints on a 20 m × 30 m drawbell spacing in a 700 000 m2 footprint using the El Teniente layout. The drawpoint opening sequence includes five production blocks, the first two of which are scheduled to be undercut simultaneously in 2018. Ore is transported using diesel-powered load-haul-dumps to a series of orepasses and then delivered via loading chutes to a rail haulage system, which delivers the ore to a three gyratory crusher complex. Crushed ore is transported to the mill stockpiles via dual inclined conveyors.Development and construction of the substantial fixed facilities are now well underway. Primary access for personnel and materials is via the 6 km Ali Boediardjo (AB) adits. A service shaft will hoist personnel and materials from the AB adits level to the various operating levels. Shaft commissioning is scheduled for late 2015. The rail haulage system installation and construction is in progress and is due to be commissioned in 2017, which is timed to coincide with the commissioning of the ore handling system. Ventilation is provided through a series of large intake and exhaust drifts, and two of the four main fans have been commissioned. A 1600 L/s pumping system will manage drainage from the mine.Other key facilities include separate shops for rail and rubber-tired equipment, warehousing, a powder magazine, a main control centre and an underground concrete batch plant.CITATION:Brannon, C A, Firdausi, H H, Pascoe, N D and Yuniar, A T, 2016. It has been almost a decade since the release of the International Council of Mining and Metals (ICMM) Health and Safety Critical Control Management: Good Practice Guide (2015a). During this time the ICMM member companies, along with many others across industry, have been busy designing, deploying and enhancing their own critical control management (CCM) programs. So, what have we learnt? This paper discusses the scope, application and learnings from the implementation of CCM within the mining industry. What’s going well? What are the common challenges? What are the opportunities to strengthen the approach? What are the threats to successful implementation? The paper draws on the author’s experience as one of the key contributors to the development of the CCM Good Practice Guide and an adviser to many mining companies, including six of the ICMM members. The paper focuses on the practical (operational) application of CCM and the cycle of identifying, defining, implementing, verifying and improving critical controls at the frontline. The paper also includes a discussion on the safety performance of the ICMM member companies over the past decade and provides a recommendation for how CCM can be incorporated into a more proactive model to measure safety performance. The paper concludes with practical recommendations that mining companies, regardless of their CCM maturity, can consider as they look ahead. They are supplemented by three additional recommendations for consideration at the industry level.
