"The innate ability of microorganisms to adapt to changing or inhospitable environments has often been exploited for industrial purposes and forms the basis of many current biotechnological processes. The ability of bacteria to adapt and adhere to specific mineral surfaces ensures that the energetic or nutritional requirements of the cell are met and often serves as a survival mechanism under unfavourable?growth conditions or conditions of stress. In this process, cells may rearrange or modify the macromolecules expressed on the cell surface itself or produce extracellular molecules, modifying mineral surfaces to render them more suitable for growth. The modifications that these molecules produce on mineral surfaces may result in changes to the surface charge and hydrophobicity of a mineral. As a result, these biomolecules may have some potential application as flotation collectors or modifiers.In this work, the effect of long-term exposure of Paenibacillus taiwanensis to goethite and common gangue minerals associated with Australian iron ores on the differential expression of membrane and extracellular proteins was determined. Both groups of proteins play a role in cell adherence to mineral particles. Cells were adapted to grow in the presence of each mineral over time. The proteins expressed on the cell membrane and the extracellular proteins excreted by the cell were isolated and analysed by two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D gel PAGE). In an open pit mining, ensuring stability of rock slope has been one of the major challenges. As the instability of rock slopes can results in slope failures; consequently, endanger the lives of workers, affect mining operations, and often lead to economic losses. Therefore, it is practical important to study the stability of rock slopes to ensure safe, smooth, and effective mining. The stability of rock slope of about 130 m height at Higashi-shikagoe limestone quarry, which has experienced slope failures four times since 1996, was assessed. The rock mass at the quarry is consists of mainly limestone, schalstein and slate rocks intersected by clay seams of about 70 m thick at footwall of the rock slope. Previously, the effects of limestone excavation at the foot of the rock slope and shear failure due to rainfall infiltration have been investigated. Although clay is widely known to plays a vital role in the stability of slopes in engineering projects including mines, but its impacts on slope deformation at the study quarry are not adequately examined. Therefore, the present study addressed the impact of presence of clay on slope deformation at Higashi-shikagoe limestone quarry by employing both field displacement measurements and numerical simulation. Firstly, surface displacements measured by automated polar system (APS) for over eight years were analysed to understand the overall characteristics of the slope deformation. The measured results show that the displacement gradually decreases with time. The maximum displacement of about 100 mm was observed at middle of the rock slope. Secondly, the effect of deterioration and plastic behaviour of the thick clay layer were simulated using two-dimensional finite element method (2D FEM). The simulated results reveal that the clay exhibited deterioration by water contact and plastic behaviour arising from mining activities at the footwall of the clay zone. Based on the characteristics of the measured and simulated results, it was found that the displacement induced by the effect of deterioration of clay is more noticeable at the north side of the quarry whereas displacement induced by excavation is quite significant at the south side of the quarry if clay behaves as an elasto-plastic material.

In different parts of the world the term epithermal is commonly used for a variety of deposit styles. Using the redox state of the ore-forming fluid (inferred from mineralogy and alteration), the metal assemblage of deposits, and other characteristics, at least five different styles of epithermal deposit can be distinguished. Most of these different deposit styles appear to be related to magmatic fluids, with differences resulting from different compositions of source magmas. The most common style of epithermal deposit (low-sulfidation gold-silver deposits associated with calc-alkaline volcanic rocks) remains the most difficult to explain; the metals in these deposits may be derived by basement leaching without magmatic input, or they may come from magmatic volatiles, with contaminated I-type or S-type magmas as the most likely source.

During the pyrometallurgical processes, a substantial quantity of high-temperature ironmaking and steelmaking slags, generated at temperatures ranging from 1400 to 1600°C, is wasted, as the heat contained in these slags is released into the environment during the tapping process without effective utilisation. On the other hand, a significant amount of energy is required to reheat the cold materials for the manufacturing of glass and mineral-wool, often necessitating the addition of high-silica materials to facilitate the production process. In this study, an innovative approach is presented to harness the heat present in molten metallurgical slags to directly produce new raw materials for glass and mineral-wool manufacturing while simultaneously reducing energy consumption and mitigating CO2 emissions. The theoretical amount of waste glass that can be effectively added in the process has been estimated via thermodynamic calculation. Experimental assessments were conducted to examine the impact of high-silica waste materials on the dissolution, melting and fluidity. Potential recipes for glass and mineral-wool manufacturing were suggested and an assessment of the energy savings, and reduction in CO2 emissions with manufacturing of glass and mineral-wool using this innovative approach were included. It was determined that the processes could lead to a reduction of over 26 kg of CO2 emissions per 100 kg of new material used, primarily due to the utilisation of heat from slag and the accelerated smelting process.

Reliable prediction of longwall gas emission sources and rate plays a critical role in mine ventilation and methane drainage capacity planning. Over the years, Australian longwall mines have been using the historic Winter method and the Flugge method in modelling specific gas emissions (SGE). The predicted results often experience high discrepancies from the operational reality. To improve gas emission prediction, post-mining gas contents were measured in several mines in Qld and NSW by safely drilling core holes into the longwall goaf. The results revealed many new insights into gas emission characteristics from different coal seams and the drawbacks of the European methods in their use in high-production gassy Australian longwall mines. Based on measurement data, a new, time-dependent gas emission prediction model has been developed. Considering several factors such as caving, desorption and production rate, the new model can predict more accurate and meaningful gas emissions to meet today’s needs in mine gas emission management. A case study is provided to demonstrate the application of the new SGE model.

Economic gold mineralisation was discovered at Round Hill by Homestake NZ Limited in 1984 and was subsequently put into production by Macraes Mining Company Limited (MMCL) in 1990. The total mineral resource in 1990 was estimated at 41.4 Mt @ 1.42 glt at a 0.7g/t cut off, for 1.8 Moz of gold. Since project start up the mill has been upgraded twice to increase throughput and reached its current capacity of 3.2 Mtpa. At 31 December 1996, a total of 16.2 Mt of ore at average grade of 1.73 g/t has been excavated, yielding 655,000 oz of gold. MMCL began exploration along the Hyde Macraes Shear Zone in 1994. Since 1994, exploration has been successful with the discovery of over 3.5 Moz of gold. The resource now stands at 110 Mt @ 1.46 g/t gold for 5.1 Moz. This success has led to a planned expansion of the processing capacity to 9 Mtpa with the building of a new 6 Mtpa processing plant.

The Mount Carlton project in Queensland's North East sits on a high-sulphidation epithermal style deposit rich in gold, copper and silver. Mt Carlton is an open pit mining operation with ore processed using a primary crusher, single stage SAG mill and flotation to produce a concentrate for sale. Orway Mineral Consultants (OMC) was involved in the original design of the comminution circuit and the project was commissioned in late 2012, with first concentrate shipped in March 2013. When Evolution sought to optimise the project in 2015, OMC was invited to assist by undertaking a circuit review to identify opportunities for the optimisation. During 2016, the Mt Carlton site team implemented the optimisation strategies developed in conjunction with OMC. These included reconfiguring the SAG mill discharge arrangement, reducing the average ball diameter and allowing the mill to operate at higher speed and under more autogenous conditions. Cyclone operation was changed to constant pressure and the vortex finder size was decreased. The combined strategies improved energy efficiency and allowed higher SAG mill power utilisation. The additional power has been used to increase throughput by 2.4 per cent while achieving a 27µm reduction in product size (P80) to gain downstream recovery improvements. The reduction in grind size has been achieved with only 6.8 per cent increase in specific energy consumption because of a 6.5 per cent increase in grinding efficiency. The circuit product size is also notably more consistent due to the improvements made to the cyclones, providing benefit to the downstream flotation circuit. A significant decrease in ball consumption was also gained, saving hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in operating cost.This paper will discuss the circuit design, start up and will detail the changes made during the optimisation and why these were successful.CITATION:Putland, B, Lovatt, I, Cervillin, A and Schwann, D, 2018. New Zealand has often been quoted by metallurgists and others as one of the countries in which Tellurium is found, and locally it has been recorded that appreciable quantities of tellurium have been met with in the Thames and surroundingdistricts. However, specimens containing tellurium which have been obtained on this field have not been preserved and their scarcity today points to the fact that tellurium is not here abundant.To ascertain its distribution, analyses and assays have been made by the author on a large number of ores, the results of several of which are given below.The presence of any considerable percentage of tellurium has an important bearing on the metallurgical treatment of ores in which it is found.

In practice a sampling solution is a compromise of many requirements: the sample should be representative; the sampling system should also be reliable, less than 95 per cent availability restricts the use of the assayed sample for process control purposes; no sample is the worst sample, and investment costs and installation space/layout are frequently a restriction. For instance, online X-ray analysers for process control introduce a delimitation error by the nature of X-ray physics. Thus only in special cases a relative accuracy better than three per cent relative, as one standard deviation, is achieved. A sampling system for process control needs not to be, as representative, for so many sample properties, as one for composite laboratory analysis samples. Sampling system maintenance is also an important issue. There are many sampling systems in the industry which have been difficult to maintain and are in disuse for lack of resources or incentives to keep them running. Pierre Gy developed the most generally accepted sampling theory. One of the main principles is that all particles in a one-dimensional process stream should have equal chances of being included into the sample. A correctly designed and operated transversing cutter comes close to this goal but has limitations in temporal representativity. For slurries an acceptable solution in many cases is to use a fixed vertical cutter(s) in a position where the slurry is well-mixed by turbulence and other means. For online analysis, reliability problems are mostly related to faulty design or installation of the piping system to the analyser. Properties of material processed, process flow sheet and piping details before and after the sampler have to be taken into account when deciding on which sampling arrangement is appropriate. Guidelines and some solutions to these issues are presented in this paper.

Subduction zone magmatism is a direct response to tectonic and chemical processes operating at convergent margins. Changes in the tectonic configuration of plate boundaries in SE Asia during the Cenozoic had consequences for the nature and volume of magma produced. Retreat or advance of the trench hinge has probably been an important process in controlling the presence or absence of magmatism in SE Asian subduction zones. This process also provides a means of replenishing the mantle wedge and counteracting the effects of melt extraction in depleting the wedge. Changes in the nature of recycled material and lithologies of the over-riding plate also have the potential to influence the lavas that are erupted in arcs. Several locations in SE Asia have experienced magmatism bearing the geochemical signature of subduction but are remote from coeval subduction zones. Such magmatism requires an earlier period of mantle enrichment by subduction but may result from localised extension. The distribution of such magmatism may provide information of tectonic value. Some adakitic magmatism occurred in tectonic settings where there is no evidence for subduction of young oceanic crust at the time of magma genesis. Slab melting in such settings is not possible and alternative mechanisms are required to explain the occurrence of, at least some, adakitic lavas.

Nuclear logging was tested for the in situ determination of Fe, Si, and Al in iron ore blastholes with field tests at the BHP Billiton Iron Ore, Mount Waleback Mine. Prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) was used to determine percentages of Fe and Si while natural gamma logging was employed for the determination of Al. The accuracy given by nuclear logging is comparable to the accuracy provided by the laboratory analysis which was determined by taking the average of four samples collected from the cuttings deposited on the surface around the perimeter of a drill hole. The work also indicated that there is a chance of determining Al by PGNAA.

Artificial ground freezing is the unrivalled method for groundwater control during mine shaft sinking. Moreover, ground freezing may also provide temporary ground support. The fast development of fibre-optic temperature monitoring devices, three-dimensional freeze pipe survey methods and numerical modelling software provide grounds for developing new and reliable tools for ground control during freeze shaft sinking. This paper presents examples of predictive numerical models that are based on back-analysis and calibration of temperature data that covers the complete construction cycle from pre-freezing through to artificial thawing. The back-analyses showed that standard numerical models are not capable of predicting the prevailing thermo-mechanical conditions satisfactorily. This paper describes the development and implementation of new tools for improved consideration of concrete hydration and latent heat, along with the introduction of other algorithms that improve and simplify the efforts of managing complex numerical models. A function is presented that allows for an automated correction of the model’s mesh based on results of three-dimensional freeze pipe surveys. This paper demonstrates that the latter consideration is important, because the often employed assumption of idealised freeze circle geometry in numerical models impacts on the accuracy of such model’s predictions. Subsequently, the verification of these extended numerical models is demonstrated. Due to its flexibility, the FLAC3DTM code was employed for the numerical modelling. This software provides the possibility of implementing additional functions written in internal FISH or Python language into the models. It is concluded that state-of-the-art techniques for freeze hole drilling and surveying, on-site monitoring and advanced numerical analysis provide a significant potential for both the design and the operation of largescale ground freezing measures. The application of the extended numerical models for predictive simulations during construction allows for temporary shaft lining optimisation, for assisting in operational decision making and for compensating temporary loss of monitoring data. The US Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) conducted compliance assistance diesel particulate matter (DPM) sampling throughout the underground metal and non-metal mining industry. Based on that sampling, MSHA identified mines that were having difficulty meeting the DPM limit. To provide further assistance, MSHA then visited approximately 60 of the mines that were experiencing difficulty complying with the DPM standard. As part of these visits, DPM exposures were measured and control technologies for DPM were observed and assessed. Controls consisted of ventilation, clean engines, environmental cabs, alternative fuels, diesel particulate filters (DPF) and work practices. The focus of the follow-up compliance assistance visits was to assess control effectiveness and to make recommendations to mines experiencing difficulty in meeting the DPM standard. At each mine visited, the ventilation controls were evaluated, engine emissions were determined for equipment in use, environmental cabs were examined, and operational practices were noted. Additionally, control technologies, including alternative fuels and DPF were evaluated in several mines. A comparison was made of mine and section airflow to equipment particulate indices. Based on engine emissions, horsepower and operating time, the contribution of individual engine emissions to total emissions was made. Environmental cab integrity, positive pressure and air filtration systems were checked and operational practices relating to DPM exposure were assessed. This paper summarises the preference and magnitudes of controls that were typically used or needed for successful control of DPM. Additionally, results of the assessments of alternative fuels (including bio-diesel and water emulsion fuels) and DPF are presented.

The majority of surface tailings storage facilities continue to employ sub-aerial tailings slurry deposition. Surface TSFs are typically sized and operated in a way to minimise the initial capital cost of the facility, driven largely by the net present value approach to accounting. This generally leads to too small a storage, too fast a rate of rise of the tailings, and difficulties in managing supernatant water. In turn, this results in wet and soft tailings deposits of high moisture content and low density, and the need for frequent and costly tailings dam raises. Further, such tailings deposits often do not facilitate closure and rehabilitation of the facility. Globally, there are on average over two failures annually of such tailings dams, resulting in loss of life, damage to infrastructure and environmental impact downstream, and the loss of company shareholder value and reputation. Recent high profile tailings dam failures are threatening the mining industry’s financial and social licence to operate.Among the physical processes that tailings undergo on sub-aerial deposition are beaching, hydraulic sorting down the beach according to particle size and specific gravity, settling, consolidation, and desiccation on exposure to the sun and wind. Beaching and hydraulic sorting have proved difficult to test at laboratory scale and difficult to model, and are best assessed in the field. Settling, consolidation and desiccation may be assessed at laboratory scale, but to date there has been an absence of tests to form the basis for the design and management of tailings deposition, and ultimate closure and rehabilitation. The paper describes recent advances in tailings testing methods, including a purpose-built slurry consolidometer that tests the settling and consolidation of tailings from a slurry consistency, simulating increasing tailings depth to about 50 m; and a purpose-built instrumented column that tests the settling, self-weight consolidation and desiccation of a surface layer of tailings, also from a slurry consistency. Selected test results from these two apparatus are presented in the paper, together with brief descriptions of how they may be used to better design tailings slurry deposition. The Republic of Uganda aims to exploit its’ significant, un-developed iron ore resources to supply the required raw material for developing its’ iron and steel industry across all the stages of the supply chain. Large prospects of iron ore exists in Uganda in the eastern (Tororo) regions and southwestern (Kisoro-Kabale) regions of the country. The Kisoro-Kabale iron ore projects covers mineralisation in hematitic banded iron formation (itabirite) in the north-eastern Congo-Tanzania Craton; covering ten Iron ore prospects. The prospects include Kamena, Karukara, Nyamiringa, Kyanyamuzinda, Rugando, Katagata, Rwengongo, Kijuguta, Kihumuro and Katuna. High-grade hematite ore prospects in south-western Uganda have known grades ranging from 55 per cent to 68 per cent iron ore content with an exploration target estimated at over 500 million tonne (Mt). Small scale production of iron ore from the south-western regions provide raw material to existing steelmaking and direct reduction iron ore plants located in the Jinja and Iganga districts of eastern Uganda. Large quantities of iron ore and other steelmaking raw material, however, are required to be imported into Uganda due to the limited exploration and development of their own iron ore mining operations. A joint collaboration between the European Union (EU), the Department of the Geological Survey and Mines (DGSM), Ugandan Ministry of Mines in partnership with Australian drilling and mining consultancies, ADT Africa and Kalem Group as a EU funded project was undertaken during November 2022 and September 2023. Exploration and evaluation of the ten iron ore prospects in south-western Uganda was undertaken through geological mapping, drilling, assaying, and technical studies with the view to attract investment for the development of Uganda iron ore mining and steelmaking industry. The collaboration developed mineral exploration policy, guidelines and standards, an iron ore exploration manual, a geological data management policy, and to support the sustainable development of iron ore mining in Uganda through building the capacity of local Ugandan geology and mining personnel through the transfer of knowledge and expertise from experienced iron ore experts. The quantification of these resources is an important first step in assessing their economic potential and attracting mining investors. This paper presents an overview of the investigation program and the preliminary results as an important first step in attracting mining investors to this exciting new iron ore province.

Roxgold was a small exploration company when it discovered the Zone 55 orebody at the Yaramoko project in Burkina Faso in 2010. Since this time, it has actively progressed the project with the completion of a preliminary economic assessment in 2013, a feasibility study in early 2014 and obtained full permitting for construction in January 2015. With no other underground gold mine in Burkina Faso, developing a modern and productive modern gold mine in West Africa was considered a significant challenge as Roxgold moved from explorer to producer.To facilitate this development, Roxgold engaged an international underground mining contractor to partner this development. This has enabled Roxgold to successfully develop the mine over a relatively short time frame with construction commencing in April 2015, first gold being poured in May 2016 and commercial production being achieved in October 2016.This paper discusses key elements of the project development and highlights some of the challenges faced with operating in a remote poorly developed area with a limited mining culture. Results obtained from small scale tests using Australian tin concentrates indicate that metallic tin containing less than 0·1 per cent iron can be recovered by a two-stage process using hydrogen and make-up chlorine. In the first stage the concentrate is ground,. pelletized, roasted, and reacted at 650°C with HCI and H2 to volatilize the tin as SnOI2. The volatilization reaction is conducted with cocurrent gas and solids flow because it was found that the use of cocurrent flow yielded a solids residue substantially free from FeCI2. The second stage uses a technique termed "reflux reduction" during which the SnOl2 produced by volatilization is reduced by hydrogen to form tin and a gas containing HCI and H2 of sufficiently high HCI tenor for recycle to the volatilization stage. The elimination of tin ranged from 98+ to 99·7+ per cent of the tin from concentrates containing 5 to 50 per cent tin, respectively. The process should be capable of continuous operation, and a tentative calculation has shown ,that a treatment rate of 12,000 tonnes of tin concentrate per year could be obtained in a volatilization reactor 1·1 m in diameter and 6·1 m high. The process may have particular application to finely divided concentrates containing less than 20 per cent tin.

Flotation surveying can be an extremely powerful means of determining opportunities for circuit optimisation and benchmarking. The type of survey employed depends heavily on the nature of the information required from the survey. It follows then that the type of survey determines the type of samples required; however, regardless of the type, the success or failure of a survey is often dependent on the correct used of appropriate sampling techniques at each sampling point. For a successful flotation plant survey it is vital that the correct samples be collected at the correct time in respect to the feed and each other. This paper discusses the current best practice sampling methods used in flotation surveying and discusses in detail the ideal sample masses based on theoretical analysis.
