IN recent years much attention has been given to recovery, treatment, and disposal of dusts discharged into the atmosphere from operations of industry. Considerable data has been accumulated on both operational1-4 and design5,6 of dust-collector equipment for commercial installations. On the other hand, there is almost no published data on design and construction of small-scale equipment to handle dust problems that arise in the ore-dressing laboratory. Dust-collection equipment such as multiclones, single-cyclones, scrubbers, chemical and mechanical filters, settling chambers, and electrostatic separators has proved its efficiency for collecting dust in industry. In the laboratory, however, the engineer is faced with the problem of collecting small quantities of dust, inexpensively, without diverting the major effort from the metallurgical problem to the problem of collecting dust produced by the process.

Studies of the V-U system have been made to determine the constitutional diagram. The diagram is fairly simple, since no intermediate phases are formed. Additions of vanadium lower the uranium melting point and allotropic transformation temperatures. The maximum solid solubility of vanadium in uranium is 12 atomic pct and the maximum solid solubility of uranium in vanadium is about 4 atomic pct. WITH the advent of high purity iodide vanadium,' it became of interest to study the alloying characteristics of vanadium and uranium. Alloys were prepared covering the entire system and were studied using a combination of metallographic examination and thermal and X-ray analyses. As a consequence of this work, the V-U constitutional diagram was evolved. In order to prepare suitable alloys for equilibrium-phase studies, it is desirable to have the purest possible starting materials. For this investigation, calcium-reduced vanadium, de Boer process crystal-bar vanadium, and good Mallinkrodt Chemical Co. uranium were used. The first work was done using the best vanadium then available, that being calcium-reduced vanadium produced at Knolls Atomic Power Laboratory. Subsequently, the important features of the diagram were checked using alloys made with crystal-bar vanadium produced at Battelle. These checks are in agreement with the earlier work. Analyses of the starting materials are contained in Table I. Only minor amounts of any impurities were present in either the vanadium crystal bar or uranium. Nevertheless, care was exercised in selecting the uranium for the alloys. The procedure followed was to section the stock into suitable pieces for melting, and macroetch each piece. Only those pieces which appeared to be clean by macroetch examination were used for alloying. Experimental Procedure Melting: Alloys with 0 to 50 atomic pct V were induction melted in beryllia (BeO) crucibles under vacuum of 10 microns pressure or better. A number of remelts was frequently required to insure uniformity of the individual ingots. Although no visible reaction between the alloy and crucible was found in any of these operations, the alloys were checked by spectroscopic analysis. Only trace amounts of beryllium were detected in the alloys. Alloys containing 50 to 100 atomic pct V were arc melted in a water-cooled copper crucible under an atmosphere of helium. A tungsten electrode was used. Ingots of 10 to 15 g were produced readily by turning and remelting a few times. Such small ingots were necessary because high purity vanadium was not available in appreciable quantities at this time. After melting, the ingots were examined metal-lographically for segregation and were consolidated by remelting before fabrication was attempted. Spectroscopic analyses showed that only small amounts of tungsten were picked up during the arc-melting process. In its strict application the name is limited to the fibrous varieties of the monoclinic amphiboles. Commercially, however, the most important of the asbestiform minerals is chrysotile, a fibrous variety of serpentine. About 95 per cent. of the asbestos used in manufacturing is chrysotile, and it commands a much higher price than any of the other fibrous minerals now on the market. Although the production of asbestos has increased rapidly in recent years, comparatively little has been published concerning its origin. In this paper on the recovery of mercury as sulphide, from the residues from the amalgamation and cyanide treatment of high-grade ores and concentrates, I will not discuss the many reactions, chemical and other- wise, that take place in the general process, but confine myself more particularly to the methods of recovering the mercury. I submit charts of two amalgamation-barrel charges, Figs. 1 and 2, which are self-explanatory. The flow sheet of the high-grade and the mercury extraction plants is showh in Fig. 3.

The ores treated by the Canada Consolidated Gold Mining Company at Deloro, Ontario, have been described in a paper read before the Institute in 1881. They are gold-bearing arsenical sulphurets of iron (mispickel), carrying the theoretical proportions of 42 per cent. of arsenic, 20 per cent. of sulphur, and the remainder iron. The gangue is quartz, calc spar, and some talcose, slaty rock, evidently resulting from the decomposition of the wall-rock, which on each side of the veins is syenitic granite. The .paper examines some variables which influence the quality of iron ore pellets, and which may be modified to meet the specific requirements of blast furnaces and direct reduction processes. Quality parameters defining pellet physical strength, size structure and reduction behavior considered important by the operators of blast furnaces and direct reduction processes are listed. Laboratory results are used to illustrate how feed preparation, and pellet chemistry car1 be altered to meet these specific quality criteria and some aspects of the economic impact of quality demands on the pelletizing operation are discussed.

The American mining industry is vigorous today because it is young. At a time when the ore deposits of central Europe, for example, were being exploited actively, those of the United States were lying practically untouched. The founding fathers of our republic were not interested in mineral wealth because they were ignorant in such matters; their preoccupations were with defence against the Indians, the clearing of the forest, and the starting of agriculture in their new domains. They had no idea of establishing a mining industry. The Indians whom the American colonists dispossessed had no mines; they used only the metal that was to be found lying on the surface of the ground. Their arrows and spears were tipped with flint, which likewise called for little digging, if any. The native copper that glacial action had torn from the lodes of the Lake Superior region and had carried into the valleys of the Ohio and Mississippi was employed in the making of earrings, bracelets, knives, and scrapers. The same useful metal was found in many other places, in Virginia and Carolina, in Vermont and New Jersey, for example, but the Indians did not know how to melt it, much less how to smelt the ore, therefore they shaped it into tools and implements by hammering. Fortunately for them the hammering of the metal caused it to harden and therefore to become serviceable for implemental use. It is doubtful if they obtained the copper by actual mining, that is, by digging or excavating; it is true we find traces of such operations in the Keweenaw .peninsula of Michigan, but we have no

During five underground mine fires which occurred in Arizona during 1980 and 1981, sealing the fire area became necessary. To minimize leakage into the fire area, ventilation control measures were instituted to balance pressure across the bulkheads. Problems en- countered in sealing the fire areas and measures taken to improve these conditions are discussed. The routing of the ventilation and ventilation control to en- sure the workers' safety were also important considerations in reopening the mines. The use of continuous CO monitors is discussed. One important consideration was the condition of the fire, and chromatographic analysis was used to establish this. Graphs comparing the Trickett ratio, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and oxygen concentrations are given. The Trickett ratio was useful but needed to be augmented by the comparison of CO, C02, and 02. Problems with getting good samples from sealed areas and recommended procedures that were developed during these fires are discussed.

It had a population of 118,110, according to the United States census of 1920, and of 151,968, according to a civic survey, January 1, 1925. The Salt Lake metropolitan district is estimated to have 180,079 inhabitants.The city's area is 51.8 square miles. Its altitude is 4,354 feet. It has 514 miles of streets, of which 91 miles are paved. The streets in the main portion of the city are 132 feet wide and the blocks are 660 feet long. It has 144 miles of street railway and 2,200 electric street lights. It has fifteen parks and playgrounds, forty public schools and six private schools. It has eighty-nine church edifices, of which forty-nine are devoted to denominations other than the Mormon Church.It is the capital of the state, the headquarters of the Mormon Church and the headquarters of most of the mining companies and many other business institutions of the state and adjacent territory.The State University, the State School of Mines and the Inter-Mountain Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines are in the eastern part of the city. Fort Douglas is east of the University the country clubs are in the southeastern portion of the city. The State Fair Grounds are in the northwestern portion.The city is the center of a trade area about 700 miles in diameter and is in almost the exact center of a circle that embraces the principal western mining areas. It is the home of several widely-known mining supply companies and all the other leading concerns in that line are represented by agency or branch house."

(San Francisco Meeting, September, 1915) THE desirability of employing the centigrade scale for the measurement of temperatures is becoming more and more recognized in this country, particularly in view of the fact that this scale is used almost exclusively in technical papers and publications-exclusively in those published in French or German. There are, however, a large number of factories and laboratories which still employ the Fahrenheit scale. It therefore frequently becomes necessary to convert one into the other and the accompanying chart (Fig. 1) has been found very convenient for this purpose.

The production of petroleum in Canada is relatively small in proportion to the amount of oil consumed. Production figures are given in Tables 1 and 2, which show that the production in Alberta for 1934 was more than for the whole of Canada in 1933. The preparation of low-grade iron-ores by concentration, whether or not followed by an agglomeration of the concentrate, has in the United States only recently been recognized as a metallurgical process of vast economical importance for its iron indust.ry. This importance of the process lies not only in the fact that it makes possible the use of ores heretofore discarded on account of their low iron-content or their too high percentage of elements deleterious in the iron industry, but also in its produetion of a raw material for the blast-furnace that is more uniform in its physical character and chemically purer, with a higher iron-content, than the general run of natural ores. When mixed in the burden of the furnace, it lowers the amount of coke and fluxing-stone required per ton of pig-iron produced. The furnace-operations become more regular and more easily controlled. The pig-iron is of higher quality and more uniform in character. In brief, it is becoming recognized that the beneficiating of the natural iron-ore, even if it makes the furnace-ore higher in cost per unit of iron entering into the burden, may mean a lowering of the production-cost of the pig-iron and an improved product. At the present time, the Lake Superior district furnishes about 80 per cent. of all the iron-ore yearly produced in the United States. If the Southern States arc exempted the percentage runs as high as 93 per cent. These ores are showing a steady decrease in grade from year to year. For the past 10 or 15 years this falling off in the average grade has been about 0.5 per cent. a year. The lowered grade of ore means an in-

It is a striking fact in the domestic oil statistics of 1926 that with an increase in production of 13,000,000 bbl., there was nevertheless a lowering of both crude and gasoline stocks. It was the first reduction in the last eight years. In 1918, the last year of the war, stocks of crude and refined products were lowered 16,000,000 bbl., but in the following seven years stocks were increased 350,000,000 bbl., due largely to the phenomenal crop of major pools discovered in 1923. The big pools of that year coming as they did through some curious coincidence unprecedented in the oil industry, not only piled up a sudden increase of stocks at a time of large imports but they continued to add their quota to an increase of storage until 1926. With an increase in crude production, according to the Oil and Gas Journal, from 760,000,000 bbl. in 1925 to 773,000,000 bbl. in 1926, and an increase in cracking facilities of about 30 per cent., there was a draft on storage of 22,300,000 bbl. of crude and 1,000,000 bbl. of refined. Crude and refined changed from a stock surplus of 29,130,000 bbl. in 1925, to a deficit of 23,300,000 bbl. in 1926, or a differential total of 52,430,000 bbl. With a stock reserve of 541,700,000 bbl. of crude and refined oil in 1925, the amount drawn from storage was not large in percentage but it marked an important contrast with previous years. It meant a year of stability in prices and a sound condition in the industry. The indicated domestic demand increased from 695,120,000 in 1925 to 743,360,000 in 1926, (7 per cent.), 1 per cent. of which was due to California fires. Most of the gain in consumption was due to the increased demand for gasoline. There was little comparative change in the combined imports of crude and refined oil. There was an increase in exports of 17,200,000 bbl. (1.5 per cent). A petroleum balance sheet for 1926 and a comparativl sheet for the last two years, production in the United States by major districts and pools, and a list of imports are given in Tables 1 to 5, inclusive.
