Errors in measurement of reservoir pressure include: (I) gauge errors, and (a) interpretation errors. Gauge errors may be reduced by: (a) reading charts with a comparator microscope, (b) use of hard metal stylus points to give clear lines, (6) insuring temperature equilibrium, and (d) making multiple tests. Check calibrations are equally as important as check well tests. A statistical analysis of such check runs shows quantitatively the advantages of a standardized "zero pressure line'' and of the use of field calibrations made at bottom-hole temperature on the same chart run in the well. Interpretation errors include: (a) fluid heads, which should be corrected to the top of the perforations on the basis of well-fluid gravity and from the top of the perforation to the datum level on the basis of reservoir-fluid gravity, and (b) gradients around the well. Conventional shut-in periods may be entirely inadequate to overcome these, necessitating a reservoir study based on build-up curve data, reservoir history, core analysis and any other available information. Interest in engineering studies of the pressure changes in oil and gas reservoirs is increasing. This type of work yields important information and doubtless will be greatly extended in the future. One of the factors limiting the work, however, is the accuracy with which the reservoir pressures can be determined; for if the inaccuracies in the pressure measurements represent an appreciable percentage of the pressure changes, the engineer is seriously handicapped, and must delay the reservoir study until the reservoir pressure has changed a relatively large amount. This delay can greatly reduce the benefits of such studies, at least from the point of view of aiding the leasing, drilling and completion programs. Thus, from the point of view of reservoir analysis, it is frequently important to obtain the most accurate pressure data possible early in the history of any field—particularly for the gas-distillate fields now being developed. This paper deals with improvements in the measurement of bottom-hole pressures that permit pressures even as high as 4000 or 5000 lb. per sq. in. to be determined with gauge errors of only+ ±I to 2 lb. per sq. in. Since pressures out in the reservoir rather than in the bottom of the hole concern the reservoir analyst, differences between bottom-hole pressures and actual reservoir pressures are also considered. In general, errors in pressure measurement may be divided into: 1. Gauge errors: a. Errors due to inaccuracies in reading the pressure charts. b. Errors due to irreproducibility of the pressure element and recording system. c. Errors caused by failure to allow the gauge to reach temperature equilibrium. 2. Internretation errors: a. Errors caused by a fluid head between the gauge position in tubing and the pressure at the datum level in the reservoir. b. Pressure gradients in the reservoir.

IN THIS paper, as in so many other discussions of historical nature, there is little chance for original material and much has had to be rewritten from older papers, documents, accounts, reports, and the like, some of which are of doubtful authorship or contain conflicting statistics. Fully aware of these little historical pitfalls, the authors have tried to quote the origin where possible, and also to seek further confirmation when the statement warranted it, but cannot assume responsibility for certain facts and dates. The Encyclopedia Britannica was frequently consulted. IN the opencut iron mines of the Mesabi Range in Minnesota, the trend in mining is in the development of mining equipment and mining methods which will move surface overburden and ore-bearing materials with less labor and at a cheaper cost. This is a must for most of the independent operators. Their reserves of direct-shipping ore are extremely small and their operations are being conducted in small, or intermediate pits, with a high stripping ratio in the outer fringes, or shore lines of older pits. and in ore bodies passing from direct shipping to the washing and the intermediate, or retreat ore state. The trend is toward deeper stripping, longer and steeper hauls, and the necessity of moving a total of from three to five or six tons of overburden and ore material for each ton of shipping-grade ore produced. This naturally calls for greater production, with larger shovels, or draglines. cheaper drilling and blasting costs through the drilling of larger-diameter blastholes, and cheaper haulage through the use of trucks of larger capacity and more extensive use of belt-conveyor systems. This trend is notable both in stripping and mining.

AT Lime Spur, Mont., the East Butte Copper Mining Co. has been quarrying limestone for twenty years. The quarry is beside the Northern Pacific R. R. in the Jefferson River canyon, 4 ½ miles east of Cardwell, at Lime Spur, Montana. HISTORY This quarry was opened early in 1900 by Dan Morrison of Whitehall, the discoverer of the Morrison cave, to supply a demand for smelter flux. Limestone was sold to the Pittsmont smelter of The East Butte Copper Mining Co. and to the Butte Reduction Works. As no particular effort was made at the quarry to select the rock that delivered to the smelters was unduly high in magnesia and impurities. The East Butte com¬pany, therefore. Bought the quarry. in 1909 and confined operations to the high-grade beds in order to supply rock of the desired purity for its own smelter and the Butte Reduction Works until the latter shut down. It also developed a market for some of its rock with the sugar factories. The latter market increased until in later years all rock, larger than 4 in. in size over a bar grizzly, was being shipped to the sugar factories, and the rock smaller than 4 in. was being used as a flux in the blast furnaces at the Pittsmont smelter. In 1924, the East Butte concluded a contract with the Anaconda company for the treatment of its ores, and the Pittsmont -smelter -was shut down: which made the minus 4-in. rock a useless by-product. Since there was not enough revenue in the sugar rock alone and also because of limited waste room it became necessary, if Lime Spur was to continue to operate, to increase- the proportion of plus 4-in. rock and to develop a market for the minus 4-in.

pH effectively regulates the flotation of corundum through its control of the surface charge. Since collector ions function as counter ions in the double layer, the collector must be anionic when corundum is positively charged and cationic when it is negatively charged. Even a long-chained xanthate will float positively charged corundum. Association of the hydrocarbon chains of the adsorbed collector ions gives rise to increased adsorption and increased rate of flotation. Because of this phenomenon, neutral organic molecules aid flotation although the unionized collector cannot promote flotation independently. Na2SO4 was found to depress the flotation of corundum with animic collectors through ionic competition whereas the same salt activates corundum for flotation with cationic collectors. A close connection between ion association, electrokinetic behavior, and floatability is suggested. As part of the increasing interest in the physical chemistry of flotation, strong experimental evidence has been obtained which indicates that organic ions are adsorbed as counter ions by non-metallic oxide minerals mainly because of the electrical forces which exist at interfaces(1-3). Thus flotation of such minerals without activation should then be appreciable only when the mineral and the collector are oppositely charged. Since only limited work has been reported on the effect of surface charge upon flotation behavior(3) this general hypothesis on the flotation of insoluble oxide minerals has not been tested thoroughly. Investigating the flotation of a mineral for which extensive electrokinetic data exist yields a way to test this hypothesis more extensively. The electrokinetic behavior of corundum in solutions containing both organic and inorganic electrolytes has been studied quite thoroughly' Electro-kinetic measurements have shown that in the case of corundum, simply by controlling pH the solid surface can be charged either positively or negatively. For this reason corundum was chosen for study. The object of this paper is to present a study of the flotation of corundum and to explain the results in the light of our knowledge of adsorption mechanisms gained from streaming potential investigations. This paper is concerned mainly with the effect of surface charge on flotation with anionic and cationic collectors, but in addition such flotation phenomena as collector hydrolysis, Van der Waals attraction between hydrocarbon chains, ionic competition, and activation are discussed. While the present paper is confined to a reporting of the data obtained and some of the more immediate conclusions, it will be seen that the results, in combination with those on other systems, do promise a

In the presence of oxygen, galena is oxidized in an aqueous medium containing ammonium acetate in accordance with the following reaction: PbS + 1/2 0, + 2 NH~Ac -» PbAc, + So + 2 NH: + H2O. This reaction was studied in an autoclave under oxygen pressure by polarographic measurement of the concentration of lead ion in solution. Oxidation rate is parabolic. The reaction products are lead acetote and elemental sulfur, the latter forming a film on the galena crystal. Reaction kinetics appear to be determined by the diffusion of lead from the galena phase to the solution interface through the film of sulfur. RECENT applications of pressure leaching on a commercial scale have emphasized the metallurgical importance of the oxidation of sulfide minerals in aqueous media by oxygen under pressure. Research experience has shown that sulfates, thio-nates, and metal oxides are the products of humid oxidation of sulfide minerals in basic solutions. The metal oxides may be solubilized in the presence of a complexing ion.' Certain oxide minerals are also amenable to treatment by this type of oxidation.' Several kinetic studies have been made of reactions of this type. Stenhouse' found that pyrite (FeS?) oxidized in a sodium hydroxide solution to produce a soluble sulfate and an insoluble layer of iron oxide and that the kinetics of the reaction were controlled by oxygen diffusion through the oxide layer. Andersen' studied the oxidation of galena (PbS) in a sodium hydroxide solution under oxygen pressure. He found the lead and sulfur to be simultaneously oxidized to produce plum bite ions and sulfate ions, and that the reaction rate was proportional to the surface area of the galena. The kinetics appeared to be determined by the reaction of oxygen and water with the galena surface. In each of the above reactions the metal and sulfur components of the mineral were oxidized simultaneously and at equal rates. In the present study the alkaline medium has been replaced by an approximately neutral solution of ammonium acetate in which lead sulfate is soluble. Under the conditions no sulfate was produced and no sulfur could be detected in the solution. The metal component of the mineral was solubilized and the liberated sulfur remained as a film of elemental sulfur on the surface of the galena crystal. A kinetic study of this reaction was undertaken to establish the kinetic mechanism and to determine the rate controlling step. Specific reaction rates were determined by oxidizing crystals of galena of measured surface areas in an autoclave maintained at the desired temperature and oxygen pressure. The rate of reaction was followed by measuring the concentration of lead in the ammonium acetate solution with a cathode ray polarograph, employing stationary platinum electrodes incorporated in the autoclave. The chief purpose of this paper is to indicate the laws governing the fuel-economy of the cupola, to examine the feasibility of some of the proposals for increasing its fuel-economy, and to show that the conditions limiting fuel-economy here are altogether different from those prevailing in the blast-furnace. The two methods available for studying the thermal efficiency of the cupola and determining the factors limiting fuel-economy are: 1, by the determination of the total heat-balance; and 2, by the application of the theory of critical temperatures. The case selected as an example represents a cupola operating under fairly efficient conditions. The data are as follows : Cupola, GO in. in diameter, 15 ft. high to the charging-door, with a 9-in. lining. Bed-charge, 2,000 lb. of coke and 4,000 lb. of iron. Subsequent charges, 400 lb. of coke and 4,000 Ib. of iron. Total number of charges, 20. There was 800 lb. of coke recovered from the drop, hence the total coke burned is 8,800 lb., or 0.11 lb. of coke per Ib. of iron. Coke contains 90 per cent. of fixed carbon and 2 per cent. of moisture. 300 1b. of kindling-wood is used in lighting. 80 lb. of limestone (95 per cent. of CaCO,) is used per charge, or 0.02 lb. per Ib. of iron. Melting-loss, 4 per cent.; distributed thus : Fe, 3.5; Si, 0.25; Mn, 0.25 per cent. Average analysis of top-gases : CO2, 15.1; CO, 10.0 per cent. Average temperature of top-gases, 1,600" F. Temperature of air and stock charged, 60" F. Dew-point of air, 50 F. The items entering into the total heat-balance and their calculation are as follows: 1. THE One Hundred and Twenty-sixth meeting-of the Institute, held in San Francisco, Sept. 25 to 29, 1922, was a success in every way. Character-istically, San Francisco presented climate suited, to the occasion, while the Committees on Arrangements left nothing undone that would contribute to the interest and entertainment of the members and their wives. There was a registration of over 230, and all sections, save three, were represented. In the technical meetings, under the leadership of Albert Burch in the mining session and C. W. Merrill in the milling session, the greatest interest was manifested in ore-hunting geology and modern ore-dressing methods. The general geologic phase developed numerous discussions and had for its aim the study and correlation of known data and the application-of these to the finding of commercial orebodies. The geologic features of the Comstock and their significance to the development of the present orebodies were discussed. This brought out matters of much technical interest as well as those of romantic nature in the history of the early life of that camp. The profitable application of modern milling methods to ores, non-commercial a short time ago, was discussed with much interest. The recent work on the Comstock ores occupied a conspicuous part in these discussions. Basic principles delineated by mathematical study of mechanical devices for the milling of ore came in for a prominent part in the program as well as the physical-chemical side of the processes devised for the winning of precious metals as a profit.

On Monday evening, Oct. 28, 1912, the visiting members and guests were informally received by the Local Committee at the Headquarters of the Institute at. the Hotel Statler. The evening was very pleasantly spent in renewing old acquaintances and friendships and in forming new ones. The first session, held Tuesday morning, Oct. 29, 1912, in the impressive Assembly-Room of the hotel, was called to order by David T. Croxton, Chairman of the Local Committee. Mr. Croxton introduced the Hon. Newton D. Baker, Mayor of Cleveland, who extended a cordial welcome to the members and guests present. James F. Kemp, President of the Institute, who subsequently presided at the meeting, responded in behalf of the Institute.

Oxygen and sulfur distributions in commercial, 5-ton ingots of killed, medium carbon steel are described. Oxygen distribution is found to vary with deoxidation practice. Irregular distribution of oxygen within ingots makes necessary special precautions in sampling of rolled products for analysis of oxygen. Oxygen distribution is discussed in terms of recently published solidification concepts which had been successfully applied to simpler cases of segregation. These concepts have been found inadequate to explain observed oxygen distributions. Convective movements of the liquid metal, as determined by tracer elements, are shown to be capable of accounting for the observed distributions of oxygen. IN an effort to explore the origin of surface and subsurface imperfections in pierced steel products, a study of oxygen and sulfur segregation was made on ingots cast in open-top and hot-top molds. The results of our previous investigations1"3 have indicated the importance of the location and amount of oxide inclusions in an ingot. Inclusions close to the surface of the ingot have been found to contribute greatly to the formation of imperfections in the surface of finished products. This study of the effects of deoxidation and casting practice on segregation and the resulting oxygen distribution in ingots was initiated to determine the parameters controlling the location of inclusions in an ingot. Segregation of solute elements during solidification of low-melting binary alloys has been studied in the past.1, 5 Formation and growth of inclusions in iron melts have been studied under specific conditions."- In spite of these and other recent studies,10-12 segregation during solidification of commercial, killed steel ingots is not well understood. Consideration of solidification rates, of segregation during solidification of the chill, dendritic, and central zones, and of material balances for the segregated elements has indicated that a simplified theoretical solidification model is not adequate. However, the observed high oxygen contents in localized volumes of the dendritic zone can be rationalized if additional effects of convection currents in the ingots, precipitation, and rapid growth of new phases are considered. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Steelmaking and Processing. A group of nine killed. medium carbon steel heats having compositions listed in Table I have been studied. The deoxidation and mold practices used were varied to give a wide range of steel oxygen contents. The amounts of aluminum added to the ladle and the ingot casting practices (hot top and open top) were the main variables. The steel was made by a duplex practice in 160-ton tilting basic open-hearth furnaces. All nine heats were top-cast into 24 by 24 in. big end down, fluted molds, to a height between 60 and 76 in., using both open tops and exothermic hot tops. The deoxidation practice and the tapping and teeming details for each heat and ingot studied are given in Tables II and III, respectively. Hot-top practice is indicated by the letter H following the heat designation. Furnace and ladle temperatures were measured by standard disposable-tip, Pt/10 pet PtRh thermocouples. Teeming-stream temperatures were obtained as described by Samways et al.,13 by immersing a Pt/10 pet PtRh thermocouple, covered by a silica sheath, into the teeming stream under the nozzle. The output of this thermocouple was recorded with Leeds & Northrup Speedomax potentiometer. Calibration of the latter thermocouples was based on the freezing point of a pure iron/oxygen alloy (2795°F). The accumulated errors of measurements were within ±10°F. The thermocouple measurements were supplemented in this investigation by continuous recording of a ratioing, two-color pyrometer (Shawmeter), protected from smoke by a blast of clean air within the sighting tube, and calibrated to read with better than ±10°F accuracy. Following teeming of three heats, P, R, and T, tracer elements were added to the steel in the molds to obtain a record of the progress of solidification. As soon as the teeming stream was shut off, a 0.010-in.-thick steel can containing a mixture of crushed standard ferro-titanium and ferro-vanadium (0.05 pet of each alloy element) was plunged into the middle of the steel pool to a depth of 6 in. In about 30 sec no indication of the can or its contents remained. The surface of the open-top ingots solidified in 20 to 30 sec. A study of liquid metal movement and the precipitation of oxides was facilitated materially by use of the tracer technique as titanium has a low distribution coefficient between solid and liquid steel while vanadium has a high distribution coefficient.

STUDIES of the transformation of austenite at constant subcritical temperatures have been numerous since the work of Davenport and Bain.1 Considerable information has been obtained on low-alloy steels and on high-carbon alloys containing undissolved carbide or graphite at the austenitizing temperature. Little is known of the isothermal transformation of austenite containing in solution large amounts of both carbon and a single alloying element. In this investigation four steels containing one per cent carbon and with chromium in the range 3 to 9 per cent have been examined with the view to establishing the fundamental character of the isothermal reactions when all carbon and chromium are initially in solution in austenite. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Alloys The chemical compositions of the steels investigated are given in Table I. The 4 per cent Cr alloy is a commercial steel. The other steels were made by the Carpenter Steel Co. as 50-lb., induction-furnace heats and rolled to 5/8-in. round bars. Bars were softened at 650° to 700°C. before the specimens were cut. [ ] Metallographic Method Most of the lines on the transformation diagrams presented here have been placed on the basis of the microscopic examination of partially reacted specimens. Thees specimens were approximately ½ by ¼ by 1/8 in. in size. Specimens of the 9 per cent Cr steel were held 10 to 12 hr. at 1200° to I225°C. before quenching to the various subcritical temperatures. The other steels were held for 2 to 2 ½ hr. at 1200°C. before quenching. These treatments, carried out in an atmosphere of purified nitrogen, produced an austenite grain size larger than A.S.T.M. No. I, some grains being 1 to 2 mm. in diameter. There were a few undissolved carbide particles in some specimens of the 9 per cent Cr steel. It is believed, however, that any errors in the results due to incomplete solution of carbon and chromium in austenite are negligible; that is, austenite compositions may be considered as being those listed in Table I. Exploration targets and results in the mining industry are commonly summarized in terms of tonnage and grade. Business appraisals require, as additional information, the expected profit or loss implied by the physical summay. The early incorporation of knowledge gained through financial analysis computations can provide a means for economically resolving many common exploration and development problems. Examples of such applications from the activities of exploration planning, reconnaissance, land acquisition, and development planning are presented. While prospecting for mineral deposits, geologists are frequently asked what they hope to find or have found. The response is usually descriptive, such as "50 million tons of 1% copper," and the economic implications are deferred until a capital investment decision is required. At that time, a financial analysis integrating the four analysis components is completed. These components are: 1) Tonnage and Average grade above cutoff grade 2) Capital and operating costs 3) Product value 4) Appropriate profit or loss accounting Close examination of these components reveals that there is no intrinsic reason for avoiding financial analyses at earlier stages in exploration, as long as the uncertainty of the estimate is realized. Tonnage and average grades are commonly estimated at early stages in exploration. For this component, the appropriate cutoff is the major uncertainty. Capital and operating costs are difficult to estimate before detailed quantitative information is available, but estimates useful for the types of applications pertinent to earlier exploration stages are possible. Product value estimates may or may not be difficult, depending on the pricing structure of the particular commodity. A simplified accounting procedure usually may be adopted without introducing any significant loss of validity. This paper describe some of the financial analysis applications which are pertinent during mineral exploration and deposit development. These applications lend additional insight during exploration planning, land acquisition, physical exploration, and development. The examples are oriented toward a hypothetical management investment policy which is based on a single criterion, a minimum 15% discounted cash flow rate of return. In reality, managements use multiple criteria. This simplification is convenient for purposes of presentation and does not invalidate the examples. Computers are useful, but not a requirement, for the applications described. The use of computers provides the results on a more timely basis at costs lower than equivalent manual computations. UNDERLYING PRINCIPLES AND ANALYSIS METHODS Data estimates are subject to uncertainty. The analyst may choose to assess this uncertainty by using one of two principles. Each principle has some advantages. The principle most commonly employed is "assumed certainty." Each financial analysis is based on one set of selected data, which may represent the average estimates, minimum expected conditions, etc. The critical data is identified by making successive calculations, varying the values used. Such studies, called sensitivity analyses, isolate the economic effect of various uncertainties, and guide the allocation of future efforts toward improving the overall accuracy of the analysis. A second principle, "assumed risk," examines the interactive effect of the current uncertainties by qualitatively assigning probability distributions to each data element. These probability distributions indicate the currently appraised chance that a given numerical value will prove to be true. The corresponding procedure, risk analysis, consists of processing many individual financial analyses, each analysis being based on randomly selected numerical values from the probabilistic distributions. The result is a numerical presentation of the uncertainty, but care must be exercised in the interpretation of results. The advantage of this procedure is the direct measurement of economic uncertainty caused by the interaction of uncertain estimates. Kennecott Copper Corp. has developed computer systems for accomplishing sensitivity and risk analyses.

A major problem whose importance touches the entire underdeveloped world is how to reconcile the demands of nationalism with the requirements of the international economy. Chile's copper industry presents a study of how one such accommodation has been slowly, if precariously, evolved. The dependence of a low-income country on the international economy presents, on the one hand, opportunities for speeding up the rate of development and, on the other, imposes a set of constraints on national behavior. Nationalism may be indispensable in motivating low-income countries to bear the economic costs and absorb the social changes involved in modernization, but it may also inhibit the acceleration of economic growth by its failure to come to terms with the international economy. Nationalism is a two-edged sword. An outstanding feature of Chile's economy since the mid-1920s has been its considerable dependence on the export of a single primary commodity- copper. Moreover, the affiliates of two US.-owned firms-the Anaconda Co. and the Kennecott Copper Corp.-have dominated Chile's copper industry, a fact which from time to time has posed conflict between that nation's long-range economic opportunities and more immediate political realities.

A FEW years ago, the Ventilation Committee established the practice of presenting one topic each year for discussion at the annual meeting. The practice has met good response on the part of committee members and I suggest that it be continued. The topic chosen for this year, "Underground Anemometry," is a topic which has bothered me for more than 20 years. It seems to me that the coal industry is content to rely on slipshod methods for measuring the rate of flow of air underground, so I prefaced my discussional charge to committee members with the statement that I regard air measurements made in the usual way, with hand held anemometer, as no good. Agreements and disagreements came in from more than a dozen engineers, some of whom are with operating companies, coal and metal; some with manufacturers; others with government agencies.

Modern high speed bucket wheel excavators (BWEs) can dig materials which power shovels can't handle without blasting. Yet these machines are not used in any large, open pit ore mines in the United States. American mining has been slow to use the wheel's special capabilities of high production volume at low cost, due perhaps to a traditional familiarity with shovels and draglines and/or the lack of data of BWE operation, design and cost. Of course, shovels and draglines can not be replaced by BWEs in all cases, but under suitable conditions bucket wheels can out-perform other conventional excavators and simultaneously permit significant operating savings. The latter aspect will become increasingly important to American mining men because as more low to medium grade orebodies are found in regions of thick overburden, better and cheaper ways of uncovering them must be developed. Typical of such areas are the thick alluvial fans of the Southwest and the glacial drift areas in northern regions. Much of this material would handle well with a wheel excavator without blasting, although ripping might be necessary in some cases.

During the war, the Navy undertook the construction, under my direction, of an experimental gun embodying features designed to lessen the cost and time of production. These experiments were initiated after representations as to their desirability had been offered by myself, by the Naval Consulting Board, and by the National Research Council. The first drawings were made in June, 1917, and the experiment was completed in November, 1918. For the sake of clearness it will pay to recapitulate briefly the fundamental idea of gun construction. It is well known that if a hollow cylinder is subjected to internal fluid pressure, the maximum stress occurs in the inside layers, the outer parts carrying much less than their due share of the stress. This inequality of stress is more pronounced the thicker the walls of the cylinder. If such a cylinder is pushed to the elastic limit, failure in elasticity will take place long before the outer lagers have reached the limit of their capacity. Economical use of the material would demand, however, that all parts of the cylinder reach the limits of their capacity simultaneously. This may be brought about, at least in cylinders of not too great thickness, by producing in the inner layers an initial compression, and in the outer layers an initial tension. The effect of internal pressure is at first to relieve the compression of the inside layers, while increasing the tension of the outside layers. If the initial stresses are properly distributed, all parts of the cylinder will reach their elastic limits simultaneously, thus giving a cylinder of maximum strength for its weight. In gun construction as hitherto practiced, this initial distribution of stress is produced either by winding the inner tube with wire, a common English practice, or by shrinking hoops over the inner tube, which has been the standard American practice.
