Two blasting leads were taken from these transformers, giving a blasting current of single phase, 60 cycle, 480 volts, with an instantaneous capacity of more than 600 amp. The blasting switch was on the secondary leads from the transformers, to avoid lag in energizing them.

The reduction of chromous oxide from lime silica alumina slags by carbon-saturated iron behaves as a first-order process having a rate of 0.001 grams Cr min 1 cm 2 (pct Cr ) , substantially independent of slag composition and temperature over an important range for iron smelting. The equilibrium ratio (pct Cr)/[pct Crl is below 0.04 for slags having lime-silica ratios above 0.6. MANY studies have been conducted on chromium in slag-metal systems under oxidized conditions. It is often desirable to work an old mine that has not been in operation for some time arid that is filled with water. This is especially true in Nova Scotia, where no great depth has yet been reached in any of the mines. The following is a description of a self-dumping water-tank which was used by me at Tangier, for draining a mine, and which did the work of a large pump, while the original cost is merely nominal, in comparison with the price of a pump. The tank, A, Pig. 1, is 1 1/3 by 3 feet and 4 feet high, inside measurement, made of 2-inch stuff and securely bound with iron. There are two clacks in the bottom which open as the tank is lowered into the water, and which close and hold the water as the tank is raised. B is an iron rod running through the tank, below and back of the center, and projecting beyond the sides of the tank. C is one of two guides, and D, a movable iron rod in each guide. Protective coatings based on the formation of a surface coating of nickel aluminide (NiAl) were applied to the nickel-base superalloys IN 100, SEL 15, and U-700. Coated specimens were exposed to an oxidizing environment at temperatures between 1600 and 2200 F for times up to 1000 hr. The oxidation resistance and stability of the coating were evaluated by weight gain measurements, metallographic examination, and X-ray diffraction study of surface oxides and coating. The composition of the coating and diffusion zone was determined by electron microprobe traverse of samples before and after high-temperature exposure. Intermediate phases formed in the coating and diffusion zone were identified by X-ray diffraction in situ and after electrolytic extraction. The outer coating was found to consist of the inter-metallic compound, NiAl, while the diffusion zone contained MC, M23C6 or M6C carbides, and a phase in a matrix of NiAl + Nidl. Oxidation resulted in formation of an A1203 n'ch scale containing some Tz02. Depletion of aluminum during oxidation resulted in degradation of the outer coating to Ni3Al and the nickel alloy matrix. Diffusion of aluminum into the base metal was found to be slight and did not influence coating life significantly. The o formed in the diffusion zone during coating decomposed during elevated-temperature exposure to form stable carbide phases characteristic of the base metal. Diffusion zone phase changes were found to have no effect on the life of the aluminide coating in the oxidizing envzron?nent. THE oxidation resistance of many high-strength nickel-base superalloys is inadequate for extended exposure at temperatures above about 1600°F. In addition, some applications for these materials require that they be exposed to environments containing sulfur compounds and sodium salts which can cause surface attalk known as sulfidation or hot corrosion. In order to provide the necessary corrosion resistance to the high-strength alloys, protective coatings based on an aluminizing process have been developed. These processes, usually based on a pack cementation technique, result in the formation of a NiAl-rich outer coating layer either during the coating process or by a subsequent diffusion treatment. The performance of the aluminide coatings is affected by interactions between the coating layer and the base metal both during the coating process and during subsequent exposure at elevated temperatures. Knowledge of these interactions is required to guide the development of coatings capable of longer life and improved reliability. Goward et al.' recently reported the metallurgical factors which influence coating per- formance on MAR-M200. The present work is concerned with correlating the interactions and performance of coating compositions on several representative materials. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Materials. Three cast nickel-base superalloys which are used for turbine buckets in air-breathing engines were studied: IN 100, U-700, and SEL 15. Their chemical compositions are given in Table I. The alloys were vacuum-induction-melted and cast to slabs approximately 0.3 in. thick from which rectangular specimens 0.25 by 0.5 by 1 in. were machined. Coating Procedures. The machined specimens were coated by CODEP processes which were developed at the author's laboratory. These are based on pack cementation in various media to deposit either aluminum or aluminum in combination with titanium. The coating process which deposits only aluminum is designated CODEP-C, while the CODEP-D process deposits titanium in combination with aluminum. The CODEP-D process was applied only to IN 100. Both CODEP processes are applied at 1950" or 2000°F for 4 hr without need for a subsequent diffusion treatment. An outer coating about 1 mil in thickness is produced by these processes. Test Procedures. Coated specimens were exposed to static oxidation for periods ranging from 24 to 1000 hr at temperatures of 1600" to 2200°F. Terminal weight gain measurements and visual examination were used to evaluate oxidation resistance. including oxide spalling and coating failure. Both as-coated and exposed specimens of each alloy were studied by metallographic examination, electron microprobe analysis (EMA), and X-ray diffraction analysis either of the exposed surfaces or of phases extracted from the coating and diffusion zone. RESULTS As-Coated Condition. The microstructures of as-coated conditions were generally similar, irrespective of base materials or the particular coating process. They are typified by IN 100 coated by CODEP-D as shown in Fig. 1. The predominately single-phase outer layer, area A, Fig. 1, was identified by X-ray diffraction as the intermetallic compound NiA1. The NiAl zone extended inward to the original base metal interface. The diffusion zone, area B, Fig. 1, included carbide phases, a lamellar phase oriented perpendicular to the base metal surface, and a matrix phase consisting of a mixture of NiAl and Ni3Al. The phases in the diffusion zone were electrolytically extracted using a 10 pct HCl in methanol solution at approximately 1.3 amp per sq cm. The extracted phases were found to be M6C, MC, or M=C6 carbides and o as shown in Table I1 for each of the alloys. The d spacings from a typical diffraction pattern are

The reaction between CO, and aluminum in cryolite-alumina melts in contact with aluminum has been studied by passing CO2 over the melt. In unstirred melts a homogeneous reaction between dissolved metal and dissolved CO2 was observed. In stirred melts in which convection was induced by bubbling argon through the melt, the dissolved metal apparently reacted mainly with gaseous CO2. The rate of formation of CO increased slightly with increasing depth of the melt, and it did not depend on whether CO2 was passed over or bubbled through the melt. The rate of formation of CO increased with increasing area of the metal/melt interface and with the application of anodic current to the metal. It is concluded that the dissolution of metal into the melt is the rate-determining reaction. THE current efficiency in aluminum electrolysis is determined by the rate of the recombination reaction between the anode gas and the metal: 2A1 + 3CO2—A12O3 + 3CO [1] as originally stated by Pearson and waddington.1 The occurrence of this reaction in cryolite-alumina melts in contact with aluminum was first verified experimentally by Schadinger.2 Thonstad3 has shown that the reaction may proceed further to give free carbon: 2A1 + 3CO— A12O3 + 3C [2] Normally only a few percent of the CO formed undergoes such reduction. The mechanism of these reactions has not yet been clarified. Aluminum, as well as CO,, is soluble in the melt. The solubility of aluminum in cryolite-alumina melts at around 1000°C corresponds to 75 x 10- 6 mole A1 per cu cm,4 while that of CO2 is only 3 x 10-6 mole CO, per cu cm.5 Taking into account the stoichiometry of Reaction [I], the ratio between dissolved aluminum and dissolved CO2 available for the reaction in a saturated melt is about 40. Therefore, as will be shown in the following, the reaction probably mainly occurs between gaseous COa and dissolved aluminum. The dissolved aluminum presumably consists of subvalent ions of aluminum and sodium.4'6 Since the interpretation of the present results is not dependent upon the nature of this solution, the dissolved metal will be designated solely as Al+ in the following. The reaction can then be divided into four steps: A) dissolution of metal, e.g., 2A1 + Al3 — 3A1+ [3] B) diffusion of dissolved metal through a boundary layer; C) transport of dissolved metal through the bulk of the melt; D) Reaction [1]. If dissolved CO, takes part in the reaction, three additional steps embodying the dissolution and transport of CO2 must be added. schadinger2 observed, when bubbling CO2 through the melt, that the rate of formation of CO (in the following designated rfco) did not depend on the distance from the metal surface. The results also indicate that the rate of bubbling did not affect the rfco. When passing CO, over the melt, Revazyan7 found that the loss of metal did not depend on the depth of the melt above the metal or on the flow rate of CO2, and concluded that Step A is rate-determining. In an unstirred melt, however, Gjerstad and welch8 found that the rfCo decreased with increasing depth of the melt, indicating that step C was rate-determining. It thus appears that the rate control of the process depends on the experimental conditions, particularly on the convection. In the present measurements the reaction has been studied in unstirred as well as in stirred melts. EXPERIMENTAL AND RESULTS The experiments were carried out at 1000°C in a Kanthal furnace with a 10-cm uniform temperature zone (±0.l°C). The melts were made up of "super purity" aluminum (99.998 pct), hand-picked natural cryolite, and reagent-grade alumina. In experiments where alumina crucibles were used, the alumina content in the melt was close to saturation (13.5 wt pct9); otherwise it was 4 wt pct. Pure Co2 (99.85 pct) was passed over the melt, and the exit gas was analyzed for CO2 and CO by the conventional absorption method.3 From the weighed amount of CO (as CO2) the rfco was calculated as the number of moles of CO formed per min per sq cm of the surface area of the melt. The amount of carbon formed by Reaction [2] was not determined. As already indicated the rfco is much higher than the rfC, by Reaction [2]. Since the rfC probably is proportional to the rfco, the measured rfco should then the proportional to, but slightly lower than, the total rate of Reactions [I] and 121. In general the scatter of results obtained in duplicate measurements was ±5 to 10 pct, while within a given run a precision of ±3 to 5 pct was obtained. The various crucible assemblies that were used will be described below. Measurements in Unstirred Melts. When carrying out aluminum electrolysis in small alumina crucibles. Tuset10 observed that after solidification the lower part of the electrolyte was gray and contained free metal, while the upper part near the anode was white and contained no metal. One may test for the presence of free metal by treating with dilute hydrochlorid acid.

The dissociation pressure of Cr3C2 has been measured in the range of 1908" to 2237°K by means of graphite Knudsen effusion cells. It has been found that Cr3C2 vaporizes according to the following reaction: 1/3 Cr3C2 (s or 1) = 2/3 C (graph.) + Cr (g). The equilibrizcm pressure, P, of Cr (g) is found to be log Ps=- - (21,194/T) + 6.525 over solid Cr3C2 and estimated as log P, = - (19,535/T) + 5.76 over liquid Cr3C2. CARBIDES of chromium are of great importance in alloy steels and cemented carbides. The published data on their therm odynamic properties at high temperatures, however, are meager. The heat capacity and change in entropy of Cr3C2 were determined calorimetrically by Kelley and Moore1 in the range of approximately 50" to 300°K, and by Oriani and Murphy2 from 297" to 1188°K. The standard entropy of Cr3C2at 298.15°K, obtained by Kelley.7 was later confirmed by DeSorbo.4 Equilibrium in the reaction was investigated by Boericke.5 A recent tabular summary

During the year 1928 ten new producing areas have been discovered and several extensions in oil and gas fields have been found in southwestern Texas. This year, however, will reveal itself as one of small profits in spite of considerable increase in production for the area as a whole over the previous years. At the beginning of 1928 the fields in this area (Fig. 1) were producing a daily average of 7500 bbl. from 730 wells, whereas at the close of the year the daily average had increased to approximately 14,000 bbl. from 827 wells. Production for the year was 3,453,938 bbl. The total oil produced in Southwest Texas since its discovery has been 16,955,-388 barrels. (Table 1.)

PERSIA looms up more prominently each year as one of the richest oilfields in the world. The actual production in the south and the possibilities in both the north and the south are very great. The output in the south, where the Anglo-Persian Oil Co. operates a wide concession, is steadily increasing, the returns for the fiscal year 1922-23 being 2,957,028 tons. The estimated production for. 1923-24 is 3,775,000 tons. The figures for the past few years have been as follows: 1918-19 1,106,415 tons 1920-21 1,743,557 tons 1919-20 1,385,301 tons 1921-22 2,327,221 tons According to the company's last annual report, the production from the -Persian fields operated by its subsidiaries has been well maintained and is now being increased to deal with the expanding off-take of the company's refineries at Abadan, Persia, and Dandarcy, Wales. Test drilling in an entirely different area in Persia indicates the existence of a new oilfield, which it is intended for the time being to hold as a reserve.

ROCK-DRILL steel has an important bearing on costs in many mining operations, both directly and indirectly. Direct factors include such items as shop expense, steel consumed per ton of ore produced, cost of distribution and the dust hazard. The latter, although no specific amount may be assigned to it, is an ever-present problem, and is receiving increased attention as the science of mining progresses. Indirectly drill-steel performance affects consumption of compressed air, maintenance of drills and drilling speed. The latter, in turn, increases or retards the tempo of mining and development. These factors, while not all inclusive, are preponderant in their importance. Thus it is evident that in an extensive operation drill-steel expense may run to many thousands of dollars and that thoughtful research leading toward more efficient practice is warranted. The dijfusiuity D was determined at 25° to 780°C- from hyd?-ogen evolution rates. Anomalous evolution from air-melted iron was att~zbztted to residual hydrogen, which is interpreted as a hydrogen compound that decomposes at a strongly temperature-(Ieperzdent rate above 500°C. Above 200°C, D = 0.0014 cm2sec-1 exp (-3200 cal per g atom/RT). Below, 200°C the diffusivity is anomalously low and represented by D = 0.12 cm2sec-l exp (-7820 cal per g atom/RT). It is postulated that at low temperatures the hydrogen in the metal is "trapped" with an energy 4.8 kcaL per g atom below- that of the interstitial hydrogen. 1 HE purpose of the present experimental study was to determine the diffusivity of hydrogen in a-Fe over an extended temperature range. As certain anomalies were encountered, attempts were made to understand the anomalies themselves. This research was in progress both before and after a determination of the diffusivity of hydrogen in nicke1.l The latter system was found to exhibit none of the anomalies of hydrogen in iron, and its description was far simpler. The effects of gain size on the room-temperature tensile properties of commercial(A- 70)-purity and iodide-purity titanium were investigated by concurrent tensile testing and thin-foil electron transmission studies. The mechanical tests showed that the effect of grain size on the yield, flow, and fracture stresses could be expressed by relations of the Hall-Petch type. The magnitude of the grain size effect on the yield stress was larger for commercial-purity than for high-purity titanium, but in both materials it was intermediate between that typically observed for fcc and for bcc metals. The effect of strain on the gain size sensitivity of the flow stress was found to reflect the grain size dependence of strain hardening. The electron transmission study indicated that the tensile behavior could be accounted for in terms of the dislocation densities and distributions formed during deformation. It was concluded that the effect of grain size on strength could be attributed to a relationship between grain size and the dislocation densities generated in initiating and sustaining plastic flow, the difference in stress levels being due to strain hardening. The relationships between recrystallized grain size, uniaxial tensile properties, and dislocation substructure have not been explored in any detail for a titanium. With titanium and its alloys finding increasing applications in aerospace systems, such information has become essential. The research described in this paper had two objectives: first, to document the effect of grain size on the yield, flow, and fracture stresses of unalloyed a titanium by the tensile testing of recrystalliied specimens at room temperature; second, to attempt an interpretation of the mechanical test behavior in terms of the dislocation structures formed on deformation, as observed by transmission electron microscopy of thin foils prepared from deformed tensile specimens. The observations reported here are restricted to room-temperature deformation; the effect of temperature on the yield and flow stresses of a titanium and the athermal nature of the contribution of grain size to the flow stress have been discussed elsewhere.1"3 EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Two purity grades of unalloyed titanium have been investigated: Crucible Steel A-70, a typical commer- cial-purity product, and a high-purity iodide grade supplied by the Foote Mineral Co. Chemical analyses for interstitial impurity contents are given in Table I, together with values for the total interstitial atom fractions in terms of oxygen equivalents, which were calculated by the method outlined previously.4 ,5 According to the manufacturer's nominal analysis, the A-70 grade also contains about 3700 ppm of Fe. The A-70 grade was supplied as 1/4-in.-diam centerless-ground rod. The iodide grade was supplied as crystal bar which was consolidated to approximately 1/4-in.-diam rod by a single, rapid, molten zone pass, using electron beam heating. The 1/4-in. rods were cold-swaged to 0.078-in.-diam wires and 2-in. lengths were recrystallized in a vacuum of -5 x 10-5 torr, giving grain sizes in the range 0.8 to 30 . The thermal treatments and resulting grain sizes are summarized in Table 11. Since there was in no case any obvious sign of a bimodal dis tribution of grain sizes, the grain size values quoted in Table I1 are those obtained from mean linear intercept measurements involving >I00 grains. For the two coarse grain sizes the measurements were made using conventional optical techniques. It was noted during these determinations that the etchants used (10 pct HF; 30 pct HN03; 60 pct H20 and 2 pct HF; 2 pct H202; 96 pct H20 were both tried) etched grain boundaries very nonuniformly and optical polarization effects had to be employed to reveal boundaries which might otherwise have been missed. It was found that this problem became more acute with the finer grain sizes as the usefulness of polarization diminished.

A theoretical and experimental ana1ysis is given of the change in volume of a porous medium due to changes in external and internal pressures. The result enable one to deduce directly the effect of large increlents in stresses. It is shown that the three-dimensional representation of the volume of a nonlinear porous system is a cylindrical rules surface, the generating lines of Which have a slope according to the solid rock compressibility. Analytical expression for such a ,surface is very simple. It follows that the bulk and pore compressihilities depend only on the difference between pore fluid and external hydrostatic pressure, i.e., the effective rock frame pressure. From measurements on a number of sandstones as well as limestones it can be conduded that for practical values of this effective frame pressure the pore compressibility falls in the range between the compressibility of water and that of undersaturated crude oil. In general, pore compressibility is found to be higher the lower the porosity. For a particular limestone reservoir pore compressibility and porosity could he related by means of a simple empirical formula. Results from the described study find a direct applicxtion in material balance calculations and in prob1ems of liquid flow through porous media. Since the elastic constants of the rock bulk material enter into equatiorls for velocity of acoustic waves, the results are also of importance for calculating rates of wave propagation in these media. It is shown for sandstones with 1.5 to -10 prr cent porosity that laboratory measured porosities may differ from those lender reservoir conditions by about I per cent of their value. The difference for low porosity limestotnes can be of the order of 10 per cent. The subsidence caused by elastic deformation of reservoir rock is shown to he very small. General formulas relating pore and bulk volume to external and internal pressure can be derived, as has been shown by Biot1, Gassmann2 and Geertsma.2 Their theories describe the differential change in volume caused by a variation in pore fluid tension and external hydrostatic tension. It has been known for a long timei that the stress-strain relations of a packing of spheres are essentially noninear. Our experiments show that for almost all reservoir rocks which arc elastically deformable the relation between volume and loading is also a nonlinear one, resembling that of a packing of spheres very closely. The behavior of these media is often described by using the linear stress-strain relations for small incremental stresses and strains in the vicinity of a pre-stressed condition." The present study differs from these considerations in that it enables one to deduce the effect of large increments in the stresses directly. In analogy to the stress tensor for a homogeneous body the stress tensor for a porous body can be written in the conventional way: where the tensor components, o, and t, represent the total forces acting on the faces of a unit cube of porous material. This tensor can be split into two parts. a hydrostatic and a deviatoric part, as follows2,3,1 where the component of the hydrostatic stress system, a. equals The hydrostatic stress causes a change in volume whereas the deviatoric stress system gives rise to a change in shape only. One of the difficulties in describing changes of volume occurring in reservoir rocks is that the relations connecting these volume changes with external and internal stresses are essentially non-linear. A complete description requires the bulk volume, V,,, as well as the pore volume,V,,. to be known as a function of both the changes in pore fluid tension (v) and the hydrostatic tension on the outer boundary.

VARIOUS'-3 reports on the electroslag remelting process refer to the "thin skin of slag" existing around the slag pool and the solidifying ingot, but none considers the various mechanisms by which this layer forms and thus influences the surface quality of the ingot. A vertical section4,5 of the Cao-CaF2-Al2O3 diagram is shown in Fig. 1 between CaF2 and 6Al2.CaO3 From this, it is seen that a typical "70:30" CaF2:A1a3 slag will solidify to produce 6Al2O3.CaO primary phase in a eutectic matrix. The Bureau of Mines investigated selective extraction of Au and Ag from a low-grade Au ore containing Hg. Gold and silver were extracted from the ore in cyanide slurries, and Hg extraction was suppressed with sodium or calcium sulfide. Maximum Au extraction and minimum Hg extraction were obtained using solutions containing 17 kg NaCN/t of solution (0.34 lb NaCN/st). Increasing the cyanide concentration increased Hg extraction without increasing Au extraction. Mercury extraction from the ore was suppressed with 0.5-2.9 kg CaS/kg Hg (0.5-2.9 lb/lb) in the ore. Gold-to-mercury ratios of 100:1 to 400:1 were obtained in the leach solution, and on the activated carbon in a CIP circuit.

DURING the last few years several papers1-' have been published in which internal friction measurements have been used to determine the quantity of carbon or nitrogen dissolved in a iron. This method is based on the fact that, in pure Fe-N and Fe-C alloys, nitrogen and carbon cause peaks in the internal friction vs. temperature curve; at a frequency of 1 cycle per sec (cps) these peaks appear at $-200 and +360C, respectively, and if internal friction is expressed as Q-1, which is equal to times the logarithmic decrement, this figure will, by coincidence, give the weight percentage of nitrogen or carbon in solid solution.' In most of the studies published, very pure iron (Puron) was used. In one case the influence of manganese on the behavior of nitrogen in a iron was mentioned.4 It would be of great value, especially for the study of aging and related phenomena, if this method could be applied to commercial mild steel with norrnal percentages of manganese, phosphorus, sulphur, etc. As a rule, in such steels carbon and nitrogen are present together, and the amounts of these elements in solid solution should preferably be determined separately. The fact that their internal friction peaks appear at different temperatures (+36° and + 20°C in pure iron) seems promising for such a selective determination. It is necessary, however, that the peaks are narrow enough not to interfere with one another, and further, that there is no effect from carbon on the behavior of nitrogen in stress induced diffusion, and vice versa. According to Fast,' however, in the presence of manganese the nitrogen peak gets wider and appears at a higher temperature nearer the carbon peak, and thus the prospects for selective determination are reduced. (The carbon peak was not affected by the presence of manganese.) But even if fully quantitative de- terminations of the two elements are not attained, some relative figures on the sum of them and an indication of which one is the predominant one, would be of value. Some results from experiments along these lines will be reported here. An internal friction measuring device was assembled mainly following a description by KG." The measurements were also carried out as reported in that paper. Table I gives the chemical compositions of the four different materials used in this investigation. All materials were drawn to wires with diameter about 0.8 mm, and the analyses refer to these final shapes. Determination of Nitrogen Peak Wires from steels A, B, and C were decarburized in wet hydrogen (about 30 pct H2O) at 700°C until no carbon or nitrogen could be found by chemical analysis. No peak was then found in the internal friction. The wires were further annealed at 580°C for 16 hr in hydrogen bubbled through a solution of 6.8 pct NH3 in distilled water. Chemical analyses gave 0.04 pct N in A and C, and 0.06 pct in B. After annealing at 580°C for 15 min in a lead bath and water quenching, the internal friction was immediately measured. The resulting curves are shown in Fig. 1. At these high values of the internal friction the accuracy is comparatively poor; at Q-1 - 0.030 it is estimated to be 0.002. In order to make possible a calculation of the activation energy for diffusion of nitrogen, measurements were made at two different frequencies. Steel A shows rather broad peaks, and their temperatures can hardly be expected to be very accurate. Steels B and especially C are better in this respect. AN unusual thermal etch figure in copper is described and an explanation in terms of twinning is suggested. A flat polycrystalline specimen of OFHC copper cut from a rolled sheet was electro-polished in orthophosphoric acid and annealed at 950°C in a vacuum of approximately 10-3 mm Hg for 2 hr. The specimen was found to be thermally etched, the markings on the surface being consistent with the assumption that they were the traces of the (111) planes which are developed preferentially because they have the lowest free energy. However, on one grain (the grain shown in Fig. 1) the traces formed an almost regular pentagon and at first sight it seemed unlikely that they could all be (111) traces. These traces were studied further because it was thought that they might be a type of growth spiral. A fringe pattern showed that this was not so, the grain being sensibly flat and the only features having steps were the striations and the faint curved line passing out from the center of the pentagons. To obtain some additional information, the specimen was deformed in tension. The effect of the stress was first to cause the appearance of lines running from the centers to the apexes of the pentagons and then to tilt the five segments so formed. At a much greater stress, appreciable slip appeared on the grain; these effects can be seen in Fig. 2. The micrograph was taken at a fairly late stage in the deformation and the tilting is quite marked. The magnification is the same as in Fig. 1, and although some slip can be seen it could be observed better by varying the illumination and using higher magnifications. In each segment of the grain, slip (which takes place on the (111) planes) was parallel to the side of the pentagon in that segment. The marked changes in direction of slip from segment to segment seemed to be incompatible with the presence of a regular array of subgrains. These results suggest that some of the five segments were twins. If this is so, since the twinning plane in copper is the (111) plane, the radial lines must be traces of the (111) planes on the surface. From the symmetry of the striations about the radial lines, these planes must be almost perpendicular to the surface. The angle between <III>directions in face-centered-cubic copper is 70&apos;32&apos;. If, in Fig. 3, OAB (triangle 1) is taken as matrix and OA, OB are (111) planes viewed edge on, then AB is in the correct direction to be the trace of either of the other two (111) planes on the surface. If triangle 2 is the twin (about the (111) plane perpendicular to the surface and containing OB) of triangle 1, then once again it can be shown that all lines are traces of (111) planes. Similarly, triangle 3 is the twin of triangle 2, 4 of 3, and 5 of both 4 and 1. (The sequence is, of course, quite arbitrary.) However, if this were the case there would be a discrepancy of 7&apos;20&apos; to be accounted for. It is suggested that the faint curved line passing outward from the center of the pentagon represents either a low angle boundary or a sixth small twin. The slight step shown by the fringes at this line might be an indication that the former is the case. This explanation does not account for the coincidence of obtaining a grain whose surface must be so close to (110) and obtaining the curious twinning described previously; it would be of interest to find a specific mechanism for this.

It has been estimated that rock exposures in most mining districts aggregate less than 1 per cent. of the total surface area.1 Conclusions concerning the hidden 99 per cent. necessarily have been based on knowledge of only a small fraction of the surface, and from this limited information the geologist has been obliged to deduce the approximate and general nature of the underlying formations. In the search for ore it is necessary to supplement this general picture with greater detail. Fairly accurate knowledge of relatively small zones is required. This knowledge is carefully sought in many different ways—detailed interpretations of geological history, the tracing of float, the use of test pits, of trenching, of drilling, and of other methods. Practical ingenuity, scientific brilliance, great perseverance and patience, and the expenditure of large sums of money have all been a part of this search. The problem of exploring beneath cover with economy, and of obtaining essential information which this cover hides, is obviously a difficult one. It is also a very important one, for geologist&apos;s inform us that already the story of the 1 per cent. exposed outcrops has been largely read.V here remains the nearly virgin field comprised in the hidden 99 per cent.: and the importance of this zone is bound to increase continually. In recent years, the problems connected with the exploration of this "99 per cent. zone" have attracted a constantly enlarging group of investigators and at present greater efforts than ever before are being made to resolve them. This work, in it&apos;s various special aspects, has enlisted, beside geologists, the cooperative efforts of chemists, physicists, and mathematicians. The progress made in this development should be kept before those directing explorations in order that due advantage may be taken of a changing situation. My subject concerns certain aspects of one of the older physical methods of exploration, the magnetic method. This method is familiar in principle to most of us, arid because of its age., is especially suitable for

IN discussion of Dr. Fitterer&apos;s paper on electrolytic separation of slag inclusions, some results from experiments on electrolyzing high-carbon steels at the SKF Research Laboratory were given.1 We had been working for a number of years on chemical methods of separating the inclusions but could not find any solvent that would dissolve the steel without attacking some of the inclusions, particularly the sulfides in which we were mostly interested at the time, nor any that would dissolve all sulfide or silica in filings as fine as 300 mesh without attacking the iron. Electrolytic methods had also been tried without any real progress until we learned from the Bureau of Mines about the use of the collodion membrane around the anode. Our early difficulties were to some extent different from those of the Bureau of Mines, perhaps because of experimenting on steels of higher carbon content, but most of our difficulties were of the same nature as those of the Bureau. Formation of large quantities of basic hydroxides use of impure and oxidized ferrous sulfate. To protect from oxidation from the atmosphere during electrolysis, after purer chemicals were obtained, a thin layer, 1/8 in. or less, of molten paraffin was poured over the surface of the cathode liquid, where it solidified. It was found desirable also to hold the cathode chamber slightly acid by initial addition of 0.1 per cent acid (sulfuric or hydrochloric) to prevent precipitation of the hydroxide. This acidity would decrease gradually and the cathode chamber would become neutral before the end of the electrolyzing. The increase in acidity in the anode chamber during our early experiments had appeared to cause attack of the precipitated sulfides in the residue, which originally was analyzed by volumetric method for sulfur, and for this reason a 10 per cent sodium citrate solution was substituted for the sulfate in the anode chamber.

THE formation that the writer has chosen to call "The Central Arizona Batholith" is included in the Globe, Miami, Ray, Pioneer, Troy, and Silver King mining districts. Its extension to the southeast is in the Banner mining field. Basing his argument on what is known of batholithic intrusions, the author offers reasons for considering all these granitic outcrops as parts of a single great mass of plutonic rock. The United States Geological Survey has subdivided this area into three -quadrangles-the Globe, the Ray, and the Florence. Of the first two, geologic atlases1 have been published, but of the last, the topographic map alone is available. These mining districts include such prominent present-day producers as Inspiration, Miami, Old Dominion, Arizona Commercial, Iron Cap, Superior and Boston, Magma, Belmont, and Ray Consolidated. Among those well known in the past are Silver King mine and Gibson mine. Fig. 1 is a geologic map of the Central Arizona Batholith region. F. L. Ransome&apos;s excellent work on The Copper Deposits of Ray and Miami, Arizona,&apos; is of great value to all workers in those districts. His geologic map for the Ray and Globe quadrangles has been incorporated in Fig. 1, and the stratigraphic names employed are those first applied and defined by him in his pioneer work in this region. The purpose of this paper is to show that the ores are related to post-Carboniferous granitic intrusions; that while there does not seem to be any adequate explanation for the distribution of all the igneous stocks, a preexisting structure does appear responsible for at least the location of the largest igneous stock of the region; that the principal producing vein mines are located in the sedimentary rocks in the roof of this batholith, while the disseminated copper deposits are found bordering the lower portions of the batholith exposed by erosion; that primary zoning is illustrated not only on a broad (district) scale but also on a small (individual
