ONE of the special uses to which the electric furnace has been put recently is the melting of an alloy of nickel and cast iron for the production of electrical-resistance grids. The metal sections of these grids, Fig. 1, are quite uniform for each pattern, but there is, among the various patterns, a variety of thicknesses. The cross sections vary from 1/2 by 3/16 in. to as small as 1/8 by 1/8 in. The electrical resistance f a perfect casting lies within 10 per cent. above or below the fixed listed resistance for each pattern. Good molding is essential to success in the making of these grids, for with absolutely correct metal, a variation of 0.01 in. in width and thickness of section on some of the patterns may mean as much as 12 or 14 per cent. variation in resistance. The service for which these castings are intended demands that the metal, even in the smallest castings, be very soft, showing an open, gray, highly graphitic structure in order that they may be resistant to shock, and stand up well under rough usage. The metal used for this purpose is a gray iron alloyed with 4 to 5 per cent. of nickel, which element, when the composition of the alloy is correct, imparts toughness and pliability to the metal and helps to overcome the tendency of metal to run white and become brittle because of the rapid cooling action of the sand mold. When cold, these castings can be twisted into various shapes, taking a permanent set without breaking. The alloy has approximately double the electrical resistance of ordinary cast iron. In the light of the experimental data on equilibrium for the reaction C + FeO = Fe + CO in molten steel recently obtained by Kinzel and Egan,l it is necessary to revise current theories regarding the nature of equilibrium between carbon and FeO in the basic open-hearth furnace. According to the measurements of these investigators the equilibrium constant m for the above reaction for a pressure of dissolved CO equal to 1 atm. is equal to 0.0005 at 1550" C., when concentrations of carbon and FeO are expressed in percentages by weight. Their work also shows that, with the pressure of CO fixed at 1 atm., not only is the product of carbon and FeO constant, but carbon and FeO are each independently constant—a circumstance which might have been predicted from theoretical considerations. At 1550" C., carbon is constant at about 0.025 per cent. and FeO at about 0.020 per cent., with the pressure of dissolved CO equal to 1 atm., the product of these two constants being equal to the originally mentioned constant of 0.0005. Available data on the dissolved FeO content of samples taken from the metal bath at practical slag-metal equilibrium prove that this FeO content is determined solely by temperature and the effective FeO content of the slag. The distribution constant r at 1550" C., as determined by Herty, Gaines, Larsen, Simkins, Geruso and Watkins2 is equal to 0.0086. A slag would have to contain 0.020 = 2.3 per cent. effective 0.0086 FeO or less in order to prevent the metal from containing more dissolved FeO than that required for equilibrium with CO at 1 atm. pressure. Continued development in the deeper fields discovered during 1937 and 1938 was largely responsible for the 16 per cent (2,913,400-bbl.) increase in production, bringing the 1939 output to 21,376,230 bbl., the largest for South Arkansas since 1929. The older settled fields continued to decline and Rodessa was added to this classification. Magnolia field accounted for much of the increase, with Schuler field showing only a slight increase. There were 248 wells drilled during 1939, five more than during the previous year. Of 198 wells drilled in proven fields, 21 were dry; 46 of the 50 wildcats drilled were dry. The old depth record of 8332 ft. was increased to the present record of 9028. Trend of Prospecting Production from the porous " Reynolds " oolite zone of the Smackover limestone continued to be the objective of prospecting. During the year 20 seismograph, 3 gravity meter, 1 magnetometer, 1 soil analysis and 1 electromagnetic crews were reported in the state. The geophysical work was largely concentrated in three southern counties: Columbia, Lafayette and Union. As indicated in Table 2, the same three counties received most of the important drilling tests. At the end of the year only three seismograph crews remained in the areas. The area for prospecting Smackover limestone was greatly narrowed during the year by the failure of two "fault zone" wells to find satisfactory permeability in the oolite zone, and by the relatively thin sections of porosity found in wells drilled in townships 18 and 19 South. Geology Most of the wells listed in Table 2 afforded additional control on structure of the lower beds, but gave little new information on stratigraphy. Of the 248 wells drilled, 3 ended in Tertiary, 34 in Gulf, 1 in Paluxy, 29 in Glen Rose, 15 in Travis Peak, 15 in Cotton Valley, 139 in Smackover, 2 in Eagle Mills and 10 in Carboniferous. MINE hoisting ropes can be loaded to capacity only when the strength of each component is exactly known. Characteristic curves provide this information. When load and rate of acceleration are specified for an individual rope, the characteristic curve assumes a predetermined shape. The factor of safety, is the value drived by dividing the breaking strength of the rope by the total stress on the rope where it goes over the sheave wheel. Total stress is made up of the weight of skip and cage, weight of ore, weight of rope between sheave and rope clevise or attachment, friction load, and acceleration force. Bending stresses are neglected in this discussion, as sheaves and drum di- ameters are assumed to be large enough to reduce these stresses to a negligible value. Fig. 1 gives a family of characteristic curves for 13/8-in. improved plow steel hoisting ropes of 6 x 19 or 6x21 construction with hemp core. The curves will hold for all rope sizes of this specified quality when they are subjected to an acceleration rate of 1.608 ft per sec2. As acceleration rates of most deep shaft hoists are close to this value, this family of curves is presented as a standard. Deviation is slight for other rope sizes. Note that for 0, which is the most important, the deviation is within the width of the line on the graph. In a comparison of values for ropes of 5/8-in. and 21/4-in. diam the deviation ranges from a maximum 1.2 pct at 0 ft to 0.6 of 1 pct at 5000 ft. The value of 5.55 is the same for all ropes at 2500 ft. The tabulated columns to the left of the curves are values of total connected load for each size of rope from 5/8-in. to 21/4-in. diam inclusive. With each of these connected loads the safety factor characteristic curve for the rope will be as indicated.

THE practice of drying phosphate in Florida is as old as the industry, which began a little more than half a century ago. The methods, however, have changed considerably. At first, the natural process of exposure to the sun and air was used, later supplemented by wood fires beneath open-air stationary dry kilns and drying towers of various designs. It was not until the early nineties that rotary driers came into use, and at first they were of very small design and fired with wood. As the industry grew and tonnage increased, so likewise grew the number and size of rotary driers, until today the largest installations are 6 ft. up to 7 ft. 6 in. in diameter, and 55 to 60 ft. long, fired with crude oil. The reasons for drying phosphate rock are: (1) to eliminate freight on water in the shipment and (2) to facilitate the good grinding qualities required by the buyers in their acidulation. Phosphate pebbles vary materially in natural characteristics and each property has a direct bearing on the processing. In making comparisons of cost and operating conditions, the following are usually taken into consideration: 1. The hard dense pebbles, which contain very little interior moisture and 6 to 8 per cent total moisture, usually produced from the low-grade deposits. 2. The lighter, porous pebbles, which contain 4 to 5 per cent interior moisture and a total moisture ranging from 9 to 15 per cent. 3. The product of recovery operations using oily reagents, containing from 15 to 25 per cent moisture. 4. The size of the pebbles. Usually the plus 5-mesh material is considered as "coarse rock"; the minus 5-mesh plus 24-mesh is "fine rock," and the minute particles below 24 mesh are called "concentrate." 5. The amount of moisture allowed in the dried product. The practice is generally to dry down to 1.5 to 2 per cent moisture. There is, however, an actual range in guarantee of from 1 per cent maximum to 3 per cent maximum.

In discussing the waste upon which hinges, or is supposed to hinge, so largely the preservation of our national resources, the conclusions reached would be more reliable if actual experience were consulted, and fewer deductions were drawn from general statements, which are often the product of the imagination. It cannot be questioned that the value of by-products has .not been sufficiently appreciated by us, and that our tardiness in recovering the useful ingredients of the escaping gas of our coke-ovens is one of the most glaring instances of shortcoming in that direction. And yet even for that sin there is some palliation in the immature condition of affiliated industries. I presume that it is admitted, without argument, that, except under very exceptional conditions, all the elements cannot be recovered from most of the ores or natural products which we treat. While it is a shame that the by-products from our coke-ovens should be dissipated, Edward W. Parker's report to the U. S. Geological Survey for 19061 supplies a fairly good excuse in justification of this appalling waste. He says (pp. 773 to 774.): " What has been already commented on in previous reports about the slowness of manufacturers to change from the better known but wasteful beehive practice to the by-product recovery method of coke manufacture is particularly emphasized in the statistics presented in this chapter. For it would appear from the table following that the construction of by-product ovens had about come to a standstill, especially when the records for the preceding five years are taken into consideration. At the close of 1901, when there were only 1,165 by-product ovens completed in the United States, there were 1,533 in course of construction, 498 of which were completed during the following year. At the close of 1902, 1,346 retort ovens were building, 293 of which were added to the completed plants in 1903. At the close of 1903, 1,335 new ovens were building and 954 of these

THE importance of the Donets coal field (the Donbas) to the national economy of the Soviet Union is well known. Great as was the significance of this tremendous deposit of coal in prewar days it is destined to become an even greater factor in the economic life of the country now that the tremendous havoc wrought by the Germans is being remedied. Since the war began, new coal fields have been extended; for example output of the Moscow and Karaganda (Kazakhstan) fields has become considerably larger while new mines are producing coal in several parts of Uzbekistan and Kirghizia. The huge West Siberian coal field, the Kuznetsk Basin, is producing more coal than ever before to supply the industries of that region and of the Urals. But so great has been the development of industry to meet war needs, especially in those districts of the Soviet Union that lie to the East of the Urals, that the coal obtained, eked out by such locally-won fuels as peat and wood, is still barely sufficient to meet industrial requirements. The main burden of the coal supply for the restored industries of the West, therefore, will fall on the Donbas.

The purpose of this paper is to present in a convenient form data and examples necessary in making dynamometer card analyses; also to outline a procedure of well weighing. Many articles and papers have been written delving into the mathematical considerations relative to the shape and characteristics of dynamometer cards. However. it is recognized that there are too many unknown factors involved in such calculations to assure a workable degree of accuracy. For this reason the accepted procedure is to take dynamometer cards on wells in question rather than try to calculate the load curve. The polished rod dynamometer is now recognized as a necessary tool for measuring loads, torque, and horsepower. It is also used to determine pump action and trouble-shoot for any seemingly abnormal pumping condition. The apparently infinite variety of a = maximum load (height x scale constant) b = minimum load. Range of load is difference between maximum and minimum load speed—taken with stop watch stroke —measured at polished rod c = beginning of down stroke in direction of arrow. FIG. 1 dynamometer cards that can be obtained is one reason for the general lack of usage of the dynamometer as a control instrument rather than a means for making routine measurements of leads and horsepower. When it is considered that the dynamometer card is a record of the resultant of all forces acting on the polished rod at any particular instant during the pumping stroke. the problem is then one of breaking down this resultant into its various components. As a means of a quick review we shall consider the examples shown in Figs. 1 to 9: and Tables I and II and then proceed to the interpretation of variously shaped cards caused by some abnormal operating condition. In Table 11, when we were considering the factors involved in calculating the peak polished rod load, it can be seen that the factors involved greatly oversimplify the problem. Certain assumptions are made which may or may not he even close to the actual field conditions, such as the specific gravity of the fluid generally considered as one; that the crank has constant angular velocity; that the down-hole friction is zero; and that the fluid lift is from the pump. In the following examples we shall see what a variation in fluid weight and friction can do to the general shape and magnitude of the dynamometer card. (Figs. 10 to 22.) MAKING THE WELL STUDY It is obvious that it would be impractical to consider in detail all of these factors each time a well study is made, inasmuch as each well study job could conceivably be extended into a research project rather than serve the practical requirements of finding the answer to a specific problem. For this reason it is important that some objective be established previous to the time the well study is made. The authors are to be congratulated for their interesting article, which thoroughly illustrates the variables inherent in filtration of taconite concentrate. The work and the conclusions based thereon largely parallel the test work done by the writer at the Pilotac plant* and the experience gained with a commercial size agitating disk filter in the same plant. At Pilotac, however, a thorough study was also made of the effect of depolarizing (demagnetizing) the filter feed, and it is the purpose of this discussion to comment on the merits of depolarization of the magnetite concentrate prior to filtering. The work at Pilotac was done in three phases: 1) preliminary laboratory testing with a circular filter leaf of 0.047 sq ft, followed by 2) plant testing using a 4-ft diam, single-disk agitating filter that was purchased on the basis of the pilot tests on the 4-ft model. In the laboratory tests depolarization was achieved by slowly withdrawin4 batches of thickened concentrate from a coil producing an alternating field of about 300 oersteds. In plant tests the standard Pilotac procedure1 was employed, wherein the pulp falls freely through the depolarizing coil.

I strongly endorse Mr. Jackson's (Inland Steel Company) oral comment on the authors' paper that, as blast furnace slag is removed from the BOF charge, lime solution may be retarded. After two or three pourings, the blast furnace slag will contain some iron oxide and considerable manganese oxide, and it is hot and possibly still liquid. A few thousand pounds of this slag will speed up the slag development rate considerably and could be considered a good auxiliary flux. Although the removal of blast furnace slag from the BOF charge lowers the total sulfur load by 40 to 50%, we must have a good, quick slag development in the BOF to bring .030 to .035% sulfur hot metal to .020%, a requirement on a high percentage of our steels today. In discussions at off-the-record meetings and one not published at last year's annual meeting as well as discussions with many operators over the past 1-1/2 years, I predicted that the removal of blast furnace slag could slow down lime dissolution and that, if a shop had dissolution problems before, the problem could be quite serious.

Cubic ZnSe crystals have been grown with HCl, HBr, and I, as chemical transport reagents. The growth of large, well faceted crystals is in the order HCl < HBr < I, with some produced by I, transport being 1 cm on an edge. ZnSe:I crystals showed no strain in cross polarized light and were homogeneous as determined by electron microprobe. These ZnSe:I crystals had a mobility at 25°C of about 300 sq cm per v-sec and contained 103 dislocations per sq cm; further, these crystals were pure cubic and showed both photolumi-nescence and photo conductance. Doping was attempted during crystal growth. ZnS and Zn (S,Se) crystals were also grown by I, transport. ZnSe crystals have been grown by most of the common techniques.1"6 Of these, chemical vapor transport as developed by Kaldis2 showed promise of producing high perfection, cubic ZnSe. With chemical transport, crystals can be grown far below the transition temperature for conversion of cubic to hexagonal structure. A small temperature gradient between source and growth region tends to allow near equilibrium growth, which should lead to good crystalline perfection. Because it is necessary to form volatile compounds, halogens or their compounds are extensively used as transport agents. HCl, HBr, and I, were compared as transport agents for growth of ZnSe crystals. Doping during crystal growth was attempted. ZnS and ZnSxSe1-x crystals were also grown by chemical transport. Electrical and optical properties of the crystals were examined. EXPERIMENTAL Fig. 1 is a sketch of the growth apparatus, which was a modification of Kaldis&apos;. A quartz rod which butted against the seed crystal served as a heat sink to promote growth only on the seed. Initially, crystal growth was attempted with ZnSe prepared by wet chemical methods. Because such a material contained oxides and selenates, HC1 reacted with these oxygen compounds to form H2O and no ZnSe transport occurred. Further, this ZnSe contained about 10 ppm Cu plus other impurities. High purity ZnSe, containing small amounts or no oxygen compounds, was prepared by reaction of H2Se with zinc vapors at 600° to 800°C in an atmosphere of palladium diffused H2.7 The ZnSe thus produced was usually copper free and contained only 1 ppm by weight of magnesium as determined by emission spectrographic analysis. G.E.&apos;s electronic grade ZnS, which had about 10 ppm metallic impurities, was used without further treatment. ZnS-ZnSe charges were prepared by mixing the two compounds together, then sintering 24 hr at 1100°C in an H2S ambient. The gases, HBr and HC1, were commercial grade, of 99.9 pct purity, while the I2 was 99.999 pct pure. The single crystal seeds with (111) faces for growth were mechanically held in place by sealing the outer quartz tube to the growth tube. After the charge was introduced, the system was outgassed at l0-5 torr while heated to 500°C. The desired quantities of transport reagents were then sealed off in the system, which had been cooled to 25°C. The growth tubes were inserted into a furnace with the desired temperature and thermal gradient. The system was allowed to cool for 1 to 12 hr from growth temperatures of about 850" to 25°C. The tubes remained stationary during crystal growth. HCl CHEMICAL TRANSPORT GROWTH Preliminary runs with HC1 had a temperature gradient of 100° to 200°C and no seed or heat sink. MONDAY, Feb. 21, evokes memories of the Silver Corridor at the Waldorf to be recalled and reflected upon for time to come when thoughts drift to the Annual Meeting of 1944. Crowded though it was, on occasion there lurked in the mind&apos;s eye a vision of what might have been had the 2886 persons who put in an appearance at one time or another milled around in the lobby of 29 West 39th Street. Some confusion resulted from difficulty in locating meeting rooms, but for the most part everyone found what he wanted. The usual bulletin board of members registered was missing this year and rumor has it that tile Waldorf didn&apos;t approve. Registration broke all previous records with many a busy engineer realizing that the program had something to offer that would be of use in his particular job. It might be noted here that "Arpad" co-operated nicely, previewing spring days on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday; Tuesday was a bit damp.

An equation for three-phase (water, oil, gas) imbibition oil permeability is developed, assuming the water to be the dominant wetting fluid. Oil isoperms are obtained for consolidated sandstones characterized by 1/pc2 = CS*. The evolution of an oil-gas system imbibing water from Swi to(Sw,imb )max is shown to proceed along a line of constant oil saturation with increasing oil permeability and decreasing gas saturation. When the gas satuation cannot be reduced further, the system evolves along a line of constant Sg with decreasing oil saturation and permeability. The initial gas saturation is shown to reduce markedly the effect of complete wetting by either oil or water on flow performance. INTRODUCTION Imbibition oil isoperms are required for performance prediction when a well is producing water, oil and gas. This situation occurs in multiphase displacements such as underground combustion, steam injection and the water flooding of highly depleted reservoirs. In a recent paper,1 a model was presented for the prediction of two-phase imbibition characteristics. This paper extends the imbibition model to the case of three phases by assuming that the water is the dominant wetting fluid. The following results were obtained from the model: (1) an analytical expression of oil isoperms; (2) oil isoperrns as functions of reduced water, oil and gas saturations, valid for all sandstones having a capillary pressure curve which can be approximated by 1/PC = CS*; and (3) evaluation of the three-phase flow performance as dictated by complete wetting by either oil or water. The agreement between predicted and observed oil recovery in the presence of a gas phase, reported in Ref. 1, is a partial support for the present development. However, experimental data are not available at this time to check fully the model predictions. Perhaps this paper will stimulate the collection of such data. The imbibition model of a porous medium has been described previously, and the reader is referred to the paper of Naar and Henderson1 for details. In brief, the model is formed by the random interconnection of straight capillaries, with a provision for the blocking of the non-wetting phase by the invading wetting fluid. IN THE first report1 disks of steel of known composition and history were exposed, under carefully prescribed conditions, to impacts of explosion products resulting from the explosion of 50-gm. charges of explosives having well-determined rates of detonation, or to impacts of a weight of known mass, falling through measured distances. There were available at the Bureau of Mines Experiment Station five explosives, having rates of detonation of 5716, 4470, 3190, 2296, and 1523 meters per second. It being desired to continue this exposure downward, and no explosives with a lesser rate of detonation being at hand, resort was had to the impact of a falling weight, the differences in the velocity of impact being attained by varying the height from which the weight was allowed to fall. It was expected by this means to demonstrate experimentally that the development of Neumann bands was determined by the suddenness of the deformation of the metal in which they were produced. But while progressive deformations were obtained with the explosive arges, the falling-weight method failed because the tup was ogressively deformed, also the disks were so flattened as to be unfit for metallographic examination. A return, therefore, has been made to the use of explosives as the source of energy, an air-gap being interposed between the charge of explosive and the disk, as the effect diminishes as the function of the distance between the charge and the object on which the products of its explosion, or the shock wave from its detonation, impinge. The details of the arrangement of the tests by the air-gap method were the same as those described by Foley and Howell,2 except that after the system had been set up and the desired apparent specific gravity for the explosive

The Atomic Energy Commission is investigating the distribution of uranium and thorium in the Precambrian of the western United States and the relationship of time-space-facies patterns of uranium and thorium enrichment in the Precambrian, to the major resources of umanium in Mesozoic and Cenozoic continental clastic sediments. The results of preliminary studies in the southwestern. United States are summarized. Approximately 50% of the uranium resource of the Free World is in deposits of Precambrian age, principally in lower Proterozoic conglomerates in Canada and South Africa (Uranium Resources, Joint Report, ENEA and IAEA, 1967). Most of the uranium resource of the United States is in Mesozoic and Cenozoic continental clastic sedimentary rocks that fill intracratonic basins. The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) is investigating the distribution of uranium and thorium in the Precambrian of the western United States and the relationship of time-space-facies patterns of uranium and thorium enrichment in the Precambrian to the major resources of uranium in the Mesozoic and Ce-nozoic host sedimentary rocks. This paper summarizes the results of preliminary studies of the Precambrian in the southwestern United States including New Mexico, Arizona, southern Nevada, and southern California (Fig. 1). The host rock provenances for the major uranium resources in epigenetic deposits of Mesozoic and Ce-nozoic age in the western United States were in areas of extensive Precambrian exposure along the eastern margin of the Phanerozoic geosynclinal belt (Fig. 2). Mesozoic continental clastic sediments in the Colorado Plateau contain about two-thirds of the uranium resource of the United States. These sediments formed from detritus derived from the Mogollon highland in the southwestern United States where the Precambrian was extensively exposed1-1 (Fig. 2). A genetic relationship may exist between this provenance and the major uranium deposits of the Colorado Plateau. The Pre- cambrian might be equally important in the genesis of uranium deposits whether the most important process in the formation of these deposits was the leaching of low-order intrinsic amounts of uranium from Precam-brian granite or from Mesozoic pyroclastics derived from syntexis of the Precambrian basement rocks.&apos; Precambrian Geochronology of the Southwestern United States The Precambrian geochronology of the southwestern United States is in an early stage of systematic study. Until recently, the only basis of correlation was through inconclusive field relationships. However, with the increased use of isotopic age dating, new data are becoming available for correlating regional and local events. As yet, there is no undisputed evidence of ages greater than 1.8 billion years (by) old in the southwestern United States. However, most geologists who have studied the region agree that volcanism and marine sedimentation of predominately eugeosynclinal facies took place in a northeasterly trending geosyn-cline prior to 1.7 by."&apos; Because of insufficient evidence for a pregeosynclinal continental crust, some researchers believe the geosyncline may have developed on oceanic crust.&apos; However, sediments metamorphosed to 1.7 by-old felsic paragneisses in the Panamint Range, California," and southeastward into southern Nevada are believed to have had a nearby continental provenance. The three Precambrian disturbances that are recognized in the southwestern United States are 1.6 to 1.8 by, about 1.4 by, and about 1.1 by-old (Fig. 3). In addition to plutonism, these disturbances are characterized by predominately lower-grade metamorphism. In this report, lower-grade metamorphic rocks include argillite, phyllite, slate, mica schist, and gneiss with relic sedimentary textures. Although some of the observers who first paid especial attention to the occurrences of oil and gas in the strata (such as Hunt in 1859, Andrews in 1861; Winchell in 1865, Mendelejeff in 1876, Höfer in 1876, Minshall in 1881, and I. C. White in 1883) seem to have been impressed with the fact that oil and gas deposits were connected with the disturbances in the rocks caused by their upheavalll yet, with the exception of Mendelejeff, and possibly Andrews, these observers do not appear to have understood what is really the one essential factor in the occurrence of oil and gas in the strata: viz., the faulting, uplifting, fracturing, fis-suring, and jointing always accompanying even slight rock disturbances, and in certain districts (petroliferous provinces)2 allowing solfataric hydrocarbon emanations to force their way up from the interior and to reach and impregnate the porous portions of sediments subjected to the disturbances. Instead of this simple explanation to account -for the observed connection between petroleum deposits and rock disturbances, most of the observers mentioned above, and many others who have foliowed them on the same lines since, have entirely reversed the problem. To them, instead of the dissemination of gases from fissures into the sediments, it presented the accumulation and concentration, according to anticlinal or other geologic structures, of oil and gas originally present throughout the whole mass of the strata where they were produced by the decomposition or distillation of organic remains. Whether this important problem involves accumulation from sources within the strata themselves, or infiltration and dissemination from outside sources, may be easily determined if all preconceived ideas are put aside and the established facts only are considered. WIENER and Bergerl reported the existence of the nitrides Fe3NiN and Fe3PtNwith a cubic L1&apos;2 structure. The present note shows that a similar nitride Fe3PdN can be observed and that the composition range between the iron nitride Fe4N and the nitrides Fe3NiN, Fe3PdN, and Fe3PtN is occupied by single-phase cubic nitrides with structures intermediate between L1&apos; and L1&apos;2. The materials used in this investigation were electrolytic iron of 99.9 pct purity, carbonyl nickel of 99.7 pct purity, sponge platinum of 99.95 pct purity, and palladium sheet of 99.8 pct. purity. Binary alloys of the transition metals were induction-melted in a crucible of fused alumina, powdered, and screened to a particle size of - 200 mesh. The powders were nitrided at 600°C in a gas mixture of ammonia and hydrogen, and the crystal structure was determined with the aid of a Wilson powder camera. The results are compiled in Table I together with information from the paper of Wiener and Berger.1 The compound at the nominal composition Fe3PdN has a diffraction pattern with prominent reflections of a face-centered cubic lattice (h2 + k2+l2 = 3, 4, 8, 11, 12, 16) and weaker superstructure lines (h2 + k2 + 12 = 1, 2, 5, 6, 9, 10, 13, 14). With decreasing palladium content the superstructure lines become weaker and approach the intensity of those of Fe4N. No analysis was made of the intensities, but it can be assumed that the structure is that found by Wiener and Bergerl in Fe3NiN and Fe3PtN, namely L1&apos;2 (perovskite structure) with both palladium and the interstitial nitrogen fully ordered. The dependence of the lattice constant upon the solute atom (Ni, Pd, Pt) content can be explained tolerably well by simple lattice expansion due to subsequent work confirms this suggestion, it will be of significance to order-disorder theory. The uranium-antimony system has been investigated by metal-lographic, therma1, and X-ray methods. There are four intermediate phases present: USbz and U,Sb, which undergo peritectic decomposition at 1355°and 1695OC, respectively, and USb and UPSbs which melt congruently at 1850"and 1800°C, respectively. There is a eutectic between U4Sbs and USb which melts at 1770°C. USb,, UsSb4, and USb are line compounds while U4Sbs has a solubility range of approximately 1.5 at. pct at 1770°C. Single crystal studies of the cmpo,und U.,SbS show it to have a hexagonal unit cell with a, = 9.268A and c, = 6.201b;. The solubility of uranium in liquid antimony increases from 0.1 at. pct at 650°C to 1.5 at. pct at 900°C. The solubility of antimony in a, P, and y uranium is approximately 0.02, 0.1, and 0.05 at. pct respectively. IN nuclear reactors, uranium has been used mainly in the form of solid-fuel elements of the pure-metal or uranium-rich alloys. However, in attempts to overcome some of the difficulties inherent in solid-fueled reactors, reactor concepts hive been proposed in which the fuel would be a liquid metal, such as a solution of uranium in another metal. The liquid-metal fueled reactor (LMFR) designed by the Brook-haven National Laboratory of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission is an example. Fuel for this reactor is a solution of approximately 800 ppm enriched uranium in bismuth.&apos; To design such liquid-fueled reactors, a background of information on the solubility of uranium in various metals is obviously necessary. The present study was undertaken to pro- vide information for such purposes, and in addition, to study the uranium-antimony system as a whole. A preliminary literature search showed that some work had been done previously on uranium-antimony alloys, but no attempts had been made to make a complete study of this system. The solubility of uranium in antimony was studied by Cammack and Bridger&apos; up to 950°C and by Hayes and Gordon up to 900&apos;-C. Their data are plotted in Fig. 1. Ferro, in an X-ray structure study of some uranium-antimony compounds, found USg to be tetragonal with a, = 4.2724 and c, = 8.471A, U3S4 to be b.c.c. with aO = 9.095A and USb to be f.c.c. with a,= 6.191A. Colani reported the compound UsSba; however, work by Ferro and by this Laboratory showed that this compound does not exist. foote&apos; reported several intermediate phases in the uranium-antimony system, but did not identify them.
