The notched-bar impact test has proved worth while in certain applications as a test for control of the quality or the heat-treatment of steel. In view of the serious thought that even so simple a test as the tensile test has evoked during the past years, it is not surprising that the notched-bar impact test should have inspired much experimental work. The correlation of the great number of data has not been successful, although steady progress has been made toward a better understanding of this test. Progress has been made, especially, in the isolation of the effects of the many variables that control the results. The stress system imposed on a specimen with a notch is so complicated and unpredictable that no simple evaluation of the test has been possible. Because of this uncertainty, many engineers hesitate to use the notched-bar impact test, and this attitude may well continue until a better understanding of the effects of the variables in the test are available. Without doubt, any additional data that may be presented should be accompanied by as complete a description of the - details of test as possible, so that it may be added to the general fund of information that is to serve as the basis for the theory of the notched-bar impact test. The many factors that may control the test results have been pointed out repeatedly. The importance of the effect of the type and dimensions of the specimen has been recognized. Most of the work reported by American investigators has been limited to small-size (Charpy) specimens tested as a simple beam; two types of notches (Fig. I) have been commonly used. Considerable data have also been presented by many investigators using a small specimen tested as a cantilever beam; this commonly being called the Izod test. Here, however, a shear component of stress makes the stress system even more complex than that present in the simple beam type of test, hence a critical analysis is difficult. Much work has also been reported by investigators using the tension type of specimen. A second variable that must be controlled is the testing temperature. An indication that the tests were performed at room temperature is not sufficient, since in many steels a variation of a few degrees in the actual testing temperature may be sufficient to give an entirely different range of results. Other factors, such as the composition and condition of the material being tested and the speed of test, should also be considered. R. S. Handy (Santa Rosa, Calif.)—It would be interesting to learn the comparative results of treating the Korean scheelite ore described in this paper according to the following procedure: I—Follow the procedure described in the paper to the recovery of the sulphides by flotation. 2—Dilute the residue from the sulphide flotation strongly with water and disperse the contained colloids by adding a mixture of 75 pct sodium silicate and 25 pct quebracho to dispersion point. 3— Settle the dispersed pulp and decant the supernatant colloids. 4—-Dilute, settle, and decant the pulp until the settled residue is crystalline. Not over 10 pct of the tungsten minerals should follow the colloids. 5—Treat the settled residue by flotation, having established the proper pH. Oleic acid homogenized with cresylic acid or kerosene is more selective for scheelite than is oleic acid alone. (The recovery of the contained tungsten minerals should be practically complete in this operation.) 6—Deflocculate the tungsten concentrate from step 5 with the same dispersion agents as in step 2 and treat the deflocculated pulp by gravity. The minerals that tend to float with scheelite are generally of low specific gravity and the separation is efficient. The heavier contaminants, such as pyrrhotite and magnetite can be removed magnetically, leaving a practically pure scheelite. E. J. Pryor (Imperial College of Science and Technology, London)—It occurred to me that instead of using temperature as a differentiating control, more precision might be obtained with a reagent of a type we developed here for the flotation of high grade fluorspar in cold pulps. This reagent, which is manufactured on a modest scale in England, is based on oleic acid, which has been modified by our patented process to ensure complete stable dispersion at any desired concentration in water. It thus becomes possible to utilise unimolecular layers with good selectivity. In the fluorspar flotation for which we developed it, it is possible to hold a tight control on depressing quebracho for the calcite without substantial loss of flu-orite, and recovery exceeding 99 pct is not uncommon in the mill where it is in use, even under wintry conditions. The almost universal acceptance of electrical logging by the petroleum industry calls for a critical examination of the physical bases of the common methods. This is particularly needed for the natural potential log. The conventional explanations are based on the phenomena of electrofiltration and electro-osmosis. However, experimental data show that they fail to give a basis that is quantitatively sound. Moreover, they lead to interpretations of details of electrical logs that are erroneous. It was found experimenlally that when a plug of shale is placed in a chain of dissimilar electrolytes, a current flow results. Experiments on oil-well cores and fluids similar to those existing in wells show that potentials are set up which are in reasonable agreement with those encountered in electrical logging. Doubtless other sources of potential are important but this explanation not only accounts for much of the potential but also clarifies some fairly familiar examples of misinterpretations. Introduction The extraordinary value of electrical well logging as a tool for petroleum engineers and geologists is now so universally recognized that it is not necessary to point out the ways in which it can be useful. It is sufficient to mention only the saving that has resulted from the elimination of much coring that would have been necessary under former practices and the considerable additions to reserves resulting from the discovery of sands missed in coring. Paradoxically, the very remarkable success that has resulted from the application of electrical logging to correlation and completion problems has cost some of its most consistent users dearly.' The fact that some operators have placed unwarranted faith in erroneous interpretatioils of electrical logs does not reduce the value of the logs. It should, however, make one pause long enough to ask why experienced users should be misled. The answer to this question is not hard to find. In nearly every case, the fault has been oversimplification. This is illustrated very aptly by the familiar interpretation and theory of the natural potential log. Recording and Interpreting Logs The natural potential log is extremely simple to record precisely enough for all present-day uses. One needs only an electrode, a cable to lower the electrode through the drilling mud, a recording meter and a surface ground connection. The electrode can be elaborate but need not be. R. E. Powers (Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh)—Several of the processing methods at the Josephtown smelter might well be considered by plants producing iron blast furnace sinter. In making blast furnace sinter the objectives are much the same as at Josephtown: To produce a strong yet porous agglomerate which has a size consist in a preferred range. The emphasis however is on production rate rather than on the size or other quality characteristics of the sinter. Therefore the technique is entirely different. Blast furnace sinter plants attempt to make their product in one pass with a minimum recirculating load and without sizing treatment after the sinter leaves the machines. Many plants are beginning to feel that more attention paid to quality characteristics would make the product a more desirable blast furnace material. The pelletizing of very fine material before placing it on the bed is not deliberately done at iron sinter plants, although the installed equipment sometimes gives a simila; action. Such pelletizing seems to be a promising way of accommodating the down-draft sintering Drocess to very fine materials. he recirculating load at Josephtown is extremely high. Two plants' producing blast furnace sinter from raw material of comparable size have a recirculating load of about 100 pct of production. At Josephtown it is notable that the size and the rate of feeding of return fines are under control. This is not the case in most blast furnace sinter plants. The sinter slicer appears to be a worthwhile aid in effecting such control. It is similar in action to rakes and plows used at a number of plants, but it has the advantage that the sinter dislodged is positively removed and not left to the inefficient action of a stationary grizzly screen. Blast furnace size specifications for sinter are not at present so rigid as the Josephtown specifications. If the sizing of blast furnace sinter does become important, then the Josephtown crushing practice, in which a large recirculating load is maintained on the crusher in order that minimum fines be produced, may be of interest. H. K. Najarian (authors' reply)—We note that Mr. Powers appreciates some points that we tried to emphasize in our paper as being of importance in making zinc sinter of good quality and which may well be applied to iron blast furnace sinter. Fig. 2 shows the pelletized nature of the feed going on to a Dwight-Lloyd type sintering machine in our plant. Practically, the entire feed consists of more or less rounded particles which permit more uniform air passage through the charge, while the larger particles in the charge roll on to the surface of the grate, which helps to keep the grate openings from being clogged by excessive fines. An agglomerated charge of this character may preferably be made by rolling action while being mixed in a rotating drum and wetted by water sprays to bind the fine particles together and give the charge the desired moisture content. From our observations of several iron ore and blast furnace flue dust sintering operations, we believe that if the fines from the sinter discharged from the machines were to be recirculated and agqlomerated with the new feed, not only sinter of better quality but larger capacity from the machines may be realized.

The history of iron construction in this country well illustrates the three phases of thought described by Auguste Comte, the French philosopher. The first is the era of faith, when belief in the safety of structures rests on the authority of the designer. The second is the era of criticism, when plans of structures are analyzed with much mathematical skill, but the data upon which the chain of reasoning depends is assumed upon insufficient experiment. The third, upon which we are now entering, is a scientific era, which demands experimental proof. It also demands that this proof shall be derived from experiments made on full-sized specimens, such as are in actual use, and not upon toy models. Until the construction of the United States testing-machine, now at Watertown Arsenal, it was impossible to make such experiments with accuracy. We now have a machine in which we can test full-sized specimens of every part of a bridge or other structure that we want to use, and under the same conditions in which it is actually used. The next thing is to get money to make these experiments available. No private individuals can afford to do it, and even if they could, they might wish to keep the results to themselves. So that the next point is that we want money, and that, I believe, everybodly thinks we should ask Congress for. We want also, as has been said, some one who shall make a business of testing, and who has plenty of time. Persons who are employed in private business are too much in a hurry; they want to do a thing and get done with it, and then do something else; but government officers are entirely free from this feeling; time to them is of no account, and in experimenting that is the very element that is of value; it does not do to be hurried; the great thing is to get it right and to test your results, and go over it, again and again. And the experimenter who operates the machine must be some person educated up to the use of it. We then want a general advisory board who will indicate a plan of experiments, collect the results; and publish them. For many years mineral dressers have been at a loss to explain the variation in magnetic susceptibility of the same mineral species obtained from different localities. In fact, they do not even have a list of accurately measured data on the specific magnetic susceptibility of weakly magnetic minerals to consult. Experience as a university teacher has firmly convinced me that the average student has more difficulty in acquiring a satisfactory knowledge of magnetism than of any other branch of mineral dressing. This is almost entirely because the subject has been treated far too much from a strict practical standpoint and far too little from a fundamental one. It is no exaggeration to state that almost all the published theoretical discussions are based on the experimental results of manufactured chemicals and alloys, but not of naturally occurring minerals. In an attempt to remedy this state of affairs, the author of this article not only set up a new magnetic balance in the Department of Mineral Preparation of The Pennsylvania State University, but also performed work of fundamental value, thus pointing the way to further research. This is evidenced by the fact that an investigation of the magnetic susceptibilities of manganese minerals was recently completed by S. G. Watt under the direction of David R. Mitchell, now acting dean of the College of Mineral Industries of the Pennsylvania State University. D. J. Cook is studying the magnetic susceptibility of titanium minerals under my supervision. It is hoped that our research program can be continued for several years and that similar investigations will be initiated at other universities and research institutions. Ernest M. Spokes (author's reply): The discusser has touched the heart of a pedagogical problem in the field of minerals beneficiation—students do not understand magnetism and, as a result, neither do the graduate engineers. Only recently has the average course in engineering physics started teaching the fundamentals of magnetism, as they are understood in modern physics, in addition to the classical treatment of the mathematical aspects of magnetic phenomena. It is to be hoped that this increasing instruction in fundamentals will improve our understanding and inspire research to determine more of the basic magnetic data that are essential if we are to see improved methods of separation by magnetism.

SEVERAL statements have been made to the Institute, somewhat detached from each other, as to the cost of some parts of these works, but they have not included any extended description of the. buildings or machinery. The general plan of the work connected with the water supply differs, in some important details, from that which has been common either in the Pittsburgh district or elsewhere, and a somewhat extended description may be of interest to the Institute, in connection with a note of the cost of the work. The plan as a whole, and nearly all the important details, were developed by Mr. William P. Shinn, C.E., the general manager of the Company. The immediate and responsible charge of the work was in the hands of Mr. John C. Lewis, C.E., to whom had been committed all the work of this general description, including the laying-out of the whole of the foundations, the erection of the buildings, and the grading and laying down of the entire railroad system. The continuous operation of the machinery and other fixtures of these waterworks, for more than three years, has fully demonstrated the correctness and economy of the plan adopted. No casualties of any moment have befallen the apparatus, and no improvements have been suggested as important except that the gate at the river end of the conduit should have been made more completely water-tight, so that the whole length of the conduit could be pumped out dry without resort to any temporary dam in the conduit itself. In general terms the works of the Edgar Thomson Company are situated on a plateau, about 52 feet above the low-water level of the Monongahela River, and about 2000 feet from its bank. The site of the works is bordered on one side by Turtle Creek, a small stream which drains a considerable area of coal mining territory. This creek is about 100 feet from the group of buildings which have been erected, but it flows into the Monongahela River at a point, about 1200 feet further up than that selected for the entrance to the water-works conduit. It was ascertained by analysis that the water in the creek contains an important percentage of sulphate of lime, while the water of the river is of unusual purity, in respect of any salts

The use of copper sulfate for improving the flotation behavior of sphalerite is probably at least 15 years old. The original discovery of its activating influence is somewhat obscure. The story goes that in the mill at Mascot, Tenn., its favorable action was discovered by accident, early in 1914, as follows: The original laboratory test work on a sphalerite ore gave favorable flotation results, but after a mill had been built the flotation concentration of the ore was very unsatisfactory. In diagnosing the probable reasons, one fact pointed out was that the laboratory test machine had been constructed of bronze whereas the commercial machine allowed pulp to come in contact only with wood and iron. A plate of sheet copper was hung in the flotation machine and results immediately improved. At first fanciful explanations of electrolytic and electrostatic behavior were given credence, but when the copper plate was removed and a small amount of copper sulfate substituted in the pulp an even more favorable result was obtained. Toward the end of 1914 copper sulfate was also adopted in the acid flotation circuit of the Butte and Superior Copper Co. Just who is responsible for the original discovery the present writers do not know. It seems strange that in that era of flotation litigation this discovery was not patented. While for pragmatic purposes it [nay be sufficient to know that the mere addition of copper compounds to a flotation pulp is sufficient to activate the flotation of the sphalerite, for scientific purposes it is quite desirable to know more about how the action takes place. It is the purpose of this paper to present certain evidence dealing with the mechanism of the beneficial effect. The description of the effect as activation in contradistinction to depression is now common in both the English and German languages. It makes no assumptions as to whether the zinc sulfide surfaces have been filmed with copper compounds. In fact, the principal differences of opinion expressed in the literature deal with whether there is an actual formation of CuS (or even Cu2S) on the surface of the sphalerite. Activation of sphalerite takes place in alkaline, neutral or weakly acid solutions and whereas the present day flotation of sphalerite is usually in ah alkaline solution, the early use of copper sulfate was in a sulfate solution.

WIIen clean iron and metallic zinc dust, protected from the air, arc heated below the melting point of zinc, the iron takes on a coating that has excellent protective value. This coating is a brittle alloy of zinc and iron, and the process is called sherardizing. Although the zinc particlcs are covered with oxide and cannot touch the iron, an extremcly small amount of the zinc vaporizes and the vapor, reaching the iron, alloys with it. Other zinc then vaporizes to replace that which has been removed from the atmosphere. This process continues indefinitely at a decreasing rate, for the coating already formed permits zinc to diffuse through it to combine with the iron beneath. In this way, the coating grows outward from the surface of the iron, as the bark grows from a tree. The method of growth was clcarly seen while sherardizing small cubes of cast iron, at about 450" C., in a srnall glass-stoppcrcd bottle enclosed in a rotating drum. The dust contained about 3 per cent. iron, which prevented caking, and coatings % in. thick were grown in a few hours. After a heavy layer had been formed, the cubes mere again treated for a shorter time. The layer last formed was seen to lie next to the iron, instead of at the outer surface, showing that the growth was from the surface of the iron outward. The coatings split at the edges and corners, leaving the iron exposed there. Flakes of graphite from the iron were lifted upward and embedded in the coatings. The composition of sherardized coatings varies from the outer surface inward, as would be expected from the mode of growth. That is, the iron content increases slowly at first, then more rapidly as the iron is approached. At the surface the least amount of iron possible is 6 per cent., as the experiments described below have shown. A study was made of the effect of iron in zinc dust on the proccss and on the resulting coatings. Glass bulbs, holding the small pieces to be sherardized, together with enough zinc dust to make them two-thirds full, were heated in a small, rotating electrically heated and controlled furnacc. The definitions of the terms commonly used in connection with metamorphism at elevated temperature near igneous contacts are re-examined. As the study of tactite zones associated with igneous contacts progresses, more and more emphasis is put on the localization of the ore by structural forms. The generally early age of the silicates and late age of the sulphides is well established. Postsilicate structural deformation is likely to localize ore bodies. The silicates are often replaced by the ore minerals. we may not be far from proving that the elements involved in the formation of silicate aureoles are merely normal "volcanic" emanations, that silica, lime, magnesia, and alumina, and probably soda and potash, are likely to undergo local transfers only. The work of Newhouse suggests the agents of the formation of sulphides in deposits of various classifications are the volcanic emanations. Introduction The purpose of this paper is to define the terms commonly used in connection with the subject, to briefly review and discuss the broad features of the aureoles, to indicate some of the features lately recognized: to discuss the genesis, and to suggest how the associated ore deposits can best be studied and developed. When developing a subject in mining geology one is soon conscious of the vast amount of pertinent literature and that most relevant ideas, no matter how obscure, have been considered. One can only hope to make some small contribution in point of view, a few confirmatory observations, or, perhaps, suggest a small new idea indebted to the most recent data. It is nearly impossible, also, to give specific credit, and adequate credit, to all the contributors to a given subject. This study, furthermore, was not intended to cover the field exhaustively, nor is the bibliography complete. Definition OF Terms There is much confusion in the use of the broad terms concerned. Needless to say, metamorphism means change of form; metasomatism, change of substance. The term contact metamorphism, however, has been widely misused possibly by a majority of economic geologists and engineers. As originally adopted by European investigators it meant changes effected largely by heat (thermal effects) in the rocks invaded by plutonic intrusives, but did not include those local changes usually at the immediate contact brought about by the addition of substance, i.e., by metasomatism. The work of Newhouse suggests the agents of the formation of sulphides in deposits of various classifications are the volcanic emanations. Introduction The purpose of this paper is to define the terms commonly used in connection with the subject, to briefly review and discuss the broad features of the aureoles, to indicate some of the features lately recognized: to discuss the genesis, and to suggest how the associated ore deposits can best be studied and developed. When developing a subject in mining geology one is soon conscious of the vast amount of pertinent literature and that most relevant ideas, no matter how obscure, have been considered. One can only hope to make some small contribution in point of view, a few confirmatory observations, or, perhaps, suggest a small new idea indebted to the most recent data. It is nearly impossible, also, to give specific credit, and adequate credit, to all the contributors to a given subject. This study, furthermore, was not intended to cover the field exhaustively, nor is the bibliography complete. Definition OF Terms There is much confusion in the use of the broad terms concerned. Needless to say, metamorphism means change of form; metasomatism, change of substance. The term contact metamorphism, however, has been widely misused possibly by a majority of economic geologists and engineers. As originally adopted by European investigators it meant changes effected largely by heat (thermal effects) in the rocks invaded by plutonic intrusives, but did not include those local changes usually at the immediate contact brought about by the addition of substance, i.e., by metasomatism. IN the course of my professional work in China during the fall of 1907, I had an opportunity to visit the iron-ore mines at Ta-yeh in Hu-pei province (long. 114° 50' E., lat. 30° 20' N.). It occurs to me that a rescript and discussion of my notes taken at that time should be of interest, particularly as supplementing the exceedingly interesting recent paper-of Thomas T: Read on The Mineral Production and Resources of China.1 Ta-yeh is situated near the right bank of the Yangtze river. The mines are at an average distance of about 16 miles from the river-port Shi-hui-yao, which in turn is some 70 miles S-E. of Hankow. The ores are shipped to the works of the Han-Yeh-P'ing Iron & Coal Co. at Hanyang, as also very largely to the Japanese government iron- and steel-works at Wakamatsu, Japan. Smaller quantities have been exported to the Pacific coast of the United States. These ore-deposits have been briefly noticed in a number of publications, but, so far as I know, Mr. Read's description, in his chapter on the iron-ores of the Chinese Empire,2 contains the first attempt to define their geological character. In his more recent paper Mr. Read follows very closely the text of his earlier description. To quote briefly from the recent paper, he says : " The iron-ores at Ta-yeh . . . . lie along the contact between a marble and an intrusive body of a dark-gray syenitic rock." He refers to a figure which exhibits in plan, but not in section, the relative positions of the syenite, ore-bodies, and limestone. The contact is seen to trend approximately E-W., with the syenite on the north and the limestone on the south. " The syenite lies to the north of the marble, and a few miles farther north the marble again' appears, iron-ore again being present along the contact." As a means of effecting better control of endpoint temperatirres at the Jones & Laughlin basic oxygen furnace plant, a set of mathematical equations has been developed. The eqlutions are the product of a themlochemical anaysis of the process and aye designed to calculate the required scrap, lime, and hot metal additions in terms of a number of independent variables. Results of test heats have warranted adoption of this technique by the Prodrrction Department. BECAUSE of the autogeneous nature of the basic oxygen steel-making process, bath temperature can be controlled without an external fuel supply by charging the furnace with additions that are thermally balanced. The thermal requirements of the charge materials are such that, during the refining process, they throttle the heat generated by the metallurgical reactions in a manner designed to result in a speci-fied temperature at the completion of the heat. In the past, operating personnel at the basic oxygen furnace plant of Jones & Laughlin's Aliquippa Works relied on their experience and technical knowledge of the process to determine the quantities of charge additions needed to result in a finishing temperature in the range 2880"to 2920" F. (The charge consists primarily of 93 tons of scrap and hot metal plus an amount of lime sufficient to maintain a basicity ratio of 2.8 to 3.2). Estimates of these materials are based on a consideration of the effects on finishing temperature of 1) iron silicon content, having a variation of 0.8 to 1.8 pct; 2) iron temperature, ranging from 2250°to 2600°F; and 3)any excessive cooling of the furnace due to a production delay. The end temperature of the preceding heat also serves as a guide in that, if a heat was within the specified temperature range, the succeeding heat could be charged with materials of nearly the same proportions, provided the hot metal used in each of the two charges was of approximately the same temperature and composition. On the other hand, if a heat was outside the specified tapping range, or if the hot metal used in that heat was of different analysis and temperature from that of the iron to be charged, an adjustment in the proportion of additions is in order for the following heat. Due to the complex thermochemical behavior of the process and to the inexact and subjective nature of the described method of determining charge additions, consistently accurate temperature control was not to be expected. Therefore, those heats out- side the specified tapping range necessitated subsequent adjustments by either reblowing the cold heats for a suitable length of time so as to elevate the bath temperature to the desired level, or cooling hot heats with a proper amount of scrap. Because extra time is required to make these adjustments, production is delayed. In an attempt to devise a method for improving temperature control, an analysis of the thermochemistry of the process was undertaken. This, in turn, led to the development of a set of mathematical equations which enable the calculation of the quantities of scrap, lime, and hot metal needed to result in any specified tapping temperature range. The analysis was not intended to be a repetition of work done by others such as McMulkinl or ~hilbrook.' It was meant to be an extension of their work so that charge additions could be calculated not in terms of silicon alone but, rather, as a function of all independent variables. This paper presents the derivation of these relationships, their effectiveness in controlling bath temperatures, and a method of utilizing them on an operational basis. The Heat Balance—The first step undertaken in the analysis of the problem was the enumeration of the pertinent variables. A list is presented in Table I where it is noticed that these quantities have been separated into the following three categories: important variables, variables considered as constants, and variables to be neglected. The breakdown was an arbitrary one designed to facilitate the analysis; otherwise, the mathematical treatment would have been exceedingly cumbersome and complex. Fortunately, experience has shown that these simplifying assumptions do not seriously impair the accuracy of the calculations. These variables along with the limiting assumptions listed in Table n were then used to write a heat balance of the process by applying the equation of continuity, Rate of Rate of Rate of Increase = Income - Outgo PI ] of Heat of Heat of Heat.

The crystal orientation in silicon iron that has been given a particular treatment described by Goss,l has been studied by Goss, by Bozorth2 and by Sixtus,3 but their results do not agree and are almost entirely qualitative. The following pages give a description of the orientation of the crystals in the material as determined by means of X-rays and expressed graphically in a pole figure. The treatment consists of hot-rolling the material into strip and then giving it two cycles of cold reduction followed by recrystallization. This produces remarkably good properties in the rolling direction, the product having a maximum permeability in this direction of more than 25,000 and a permeability at 16,000 Gauss of more than 2200. It is now generally agreed that Goss's original conclusion1 that the crystals in the final product are randomly oriented was incorrect, since Bozorth2 and Sixtus,3 using different methods, have shown that there is a decided preference in orientation. Those writers, however, expressed their results only in terms of one or more ideal orientations with deviations therefrom. X-ray Data A strip of the material containing 3.1 per cent Si, prepared by Goss,† 1.2 by 0.0125 in., was etched rapidly in warm dilute hydrochloric acid until it was 0.005 in. thick, in order to eliminate the effect of the two surface layers. The specimen was then mounted in an integrating camera similar to one described in the literature.4 The purpose of this camera is to translate the specimen during exposure, so that a statistically large number of grains contribute to the pattern photographed. The camera also allows the plane of the specimen to make various angles with the X-ray beam. An area 5 by 1.2 in. was scanned by a beam of unfiltered radiation from a molybdenum target tube operating at 37 kv., and the measurements were made principally on the peak of the white radiation. The lead-zinc mill of Phelps Dodge Corporation, Copper Queen Branch, Mines Division, Bisbee, Arizona, is about 3 miles from the main hoisting shafts of the Junction and Campbell mines at Lowell. All the ore treated in the mill is obtained from these two mines. The mill was designed for an all-flotation treatment of 450 tons of lead-zinc ore per day, and has been operated at that capacity since the start of milling operations on Nov. 17, 1945. An expansion program is underway whereby the mill capacity will be doubled, but this article describes only the original program and presents results of the 450-ton operation. General Description The milling plant consists of an ore-receiving bin and three steel-constructed buildings housing, respectively, the primary crushing equipment, the secondary crushing equipment, and the ore-storage bins, grinding, flotation, and filtering equipment. The mill site is the one that was used for a previous copper-concentrating plant, which was operated over a period of years and then dismantled. There remained from this operation some milling equipment, a reservoir for mill-water supply, railroad tracks, tailings-disposal ponds, and a steel-constructed building, all of which were incorporated in the design of the present lead-zinc mill. The location plan of the plant layout is shown in Fig I. The flowsheet of the mill is based on the conventional scheme for lead-zinc treatment, however, several innovations were made necessary in order to utilize the existing building. Placing of equipment also was governed by the design of the building; thus making the mill unique in many respects. The following brief description of the mill building as adapted to the flowsheet points out the compactness of the installation and some of its unusual features. The first floor (Fig 2) houses the grinding equipment, with connecting conveyors for ore feeding, also an air compressor, two vacuum pumps, bins for lead and zinc concentrate storage with individual conveying systems for loading the two kinds of concentrates. Filtering of concentrates is done on the second floor, the concentrates discharging directly into the concentrate-storage bins. On this floor are the lead and zinc filters, two diaphragm pumps, sample-filtering equipment, sample-preparation room and a change room for the mill employees. The flotation machines are on the third floor, at elevations allowing a gravity flow of the lead and zinc concentrates to the thickeners. The annex to the building contains a freight elevator and provides space for all reagent mixing and feeding, also storage of reagents and grinding balls. Following the end of hostilities of World War 11, a resurgence of industrial and home building has given impetus to the use of many products of the stone industry. Shortage and high prices of some building materials such as lumber have aided wider acceptance of materials such as concrete products which have been relatively plentiful and which have not risen so rapidly in price. Ingredients for many of these substituting materials come from the stone industries, often from by-products of stone operations. Most of the tonnage of the stone industry in the State of Georgia comes from granite and marble. There are extensive dimension stone operations in granite in the Elberton and in the Lithonia areas. Building and monumental marble from the Tate area has been used throughout the country. Cutting operations in both types of stone have their by-products in faulty blocks and in spalls. In the State there are three large crushed-stone plants utilizing granite, One near Camak, One near Lithonia and one at Stockbridge. All have had excess fines Or in in the past but this excess is largely disappearing with development of new uses. At times this "waste" has amounted to as much as 20 pct of the stone quarried. Handling Of this large tonnage from point of screening out to storage piles presented a costly problem and large areas were taken up by the piles. Crushed 'tone is generally sold with a a narrow margin Of price over cost, so any elimination of disposal cost or increase of income by marketing of by-products is highly desirable. By-products of Granite Dimension Stone It sometimes becomes difficult to differentiate between main product and byproduct. In the cutting of granite dimension stone in the Lithonia district of Georgia, a considerable quantity of remnants of Uneven shape and size is produced. The larger of these pieces have long found use as building rubble, particularly for retaining walls and building foundations (Fig I), They are broken down to one man size by plug drilling and wedging and by hammer. In recent times, demand for this former by-product has grown so that quarries have been opened for the production of rubble as a main product. Local masons have attained skill in using these irregular shapes to form economical and attractive walls. Areas such as Elberton, Georgia, which do not have a large building market nearby, tend to accumulate piles of large pieces of reject stone. When a road job or other local construction offers a quantity market for crushed stone, a portable crusher works this material down to crushed aggregate. Spalls and finer chips from granite stone-cutting operations have generally found their way into crushers and thence to the many uses for crushed aggregate. One company near Lithonia started marketing the smaller by-product crushed sizes for chicken grit about ten years ago. This use has grown to nation-wide distribution and the tonnage is now so great that they have opened a large quarry with
