I have continued the investigation of the Pottstown Iron Com pany's basic Bessemer keel plates on the line referred to in my paper of last October (Trans., xxi., 766)) and have added a study of the hardening effects of sulphur, which were not taken into account at that time. The results are so encouraging that I now give them in full. For some months we have graded all the steel at these works by the table given in my former paper, and checked the grading by the forging-tests as described in the paper of Mr. Joseph Hartshorne, read at the same meeting (Trans., xxi., 748). The steel thus graded was bloomed for the plate orders. Then one slab was rolled into a plate for the order, and a tension-test was made of this plate. By the result of this tension-test we were guided in rolling the balance of the heat. Out of several hundred heats graded in this manner, 95 per cent. met the requirements of the orders in every respect, and were accepted; but these results will no doubt be improved upon, when the influence of sulphur is also considered.. The hardening effect of sulphur seems to be about 500 pounds per each .01 per cent. of increase. In the table accompanying the pres ent paper, the ultimate strength with .06.5 per cent. sulphur agrees with the old table where sulphur was not considered; that is, for all steels with less than .065 per cent. sulphur we now get lower re sults, and for those with more sulphur, higher results. Making this allowance for sulphur, the assumed ultimate strength of a 3/8-inch plate of pure iron is reduced from 38,000 pounds per square inch to 34,750 pounds. With this as a basis, I have constructed my new table, giving each of the elements, carbon, phosphorus and manganese the same hardening effect as before, to wit : Carbon is credited with a constant effect of 800 pounds per each, 0.01 per cent. Phosphorus shows greater effect in high-carbon than in low-carbon steels. For 0.07 and 0.08 C, it has about the same effect as carbon, that is, 800 pounds for each .01 P. This increases to 1500 pounds per .01 P in 0.15 C steel, or nearly twice the effect of carbon. This

Brief Economic History of Quicksilver in the United States Quicksilver ore was first discovered in the United States at what was later the New Almaden mine in California, in the year 1824. Production also began here, but not until 1850, when it was stimulated by the active demand caused by gold-mining operations. Prospecting for quicksilver was active, high-grade ores were found and ample production lowered the price from $100 per flask in 1850 to about half that figure for the greater part of the next 10 years. During the succeeding decade, many new quicksilver mines were found; production increased at a time when the local demand diminished, so that most of the product was exported. The third decade of quicksilver mining in the United States witnessed the development of the pan amalgamation process, particularly in Com-stock silver-mining operations. A suddenly increased demand sent prices soaring, the all-time peak of quicksilver production followed, and the highest price was soon replaced by the lowest one on record. THIS paper outlines a time-saving graphical method of calculation for application to the interpretation of observations with the Eötvös torsion balance. Preliminary to the treatment of this short cut method which has been found practicable, the principal formu-las by which the student of interpretation can calculate the gradient and differential curvature produced by different types of bodies in different types of situa-tions are presented and discussed. It is necessary to split most geologic bodies into a series of simpler ones for which not too complicated formulas are avail-able. The gradient and differential curvature effects are calculated for each of the simple bodies and then summed to the total effect for the whole body. The calculations are considerable in number and, though more tedious than difficult, should be' entrusted to an experienced calculator. Considerable facility in qualitative interpretation can be acquired by the geophysicist from experience and from a thorough study of the types of gradient and differential curvature anomalies produced by the dif-ferent types of possible structural situations. How-ever, semi-quantitative calculations' of the probable structure bring out many relations that are not evident in a simple inspection of torsion balance results ; it throws out as impossible or improbable certain of the alternative structural possibilities that may seem equally probable under simple inspection of the results; it will determine more accurately the position of the crest of the structure; and reduce considerably the un-certainty in the interpretation and it is necessary to intelligent interpretations. The calculation of such cross-sections consists of a trial-and-error calculation of a body that will give gradient and differential curvature effects as closely as possible the same as those observed. From his knowledge of the gradient and differential curvature produced by different types of bodies, the geophysicist sketches a tentative cross-section of the structure as indicated-to him-by the observed results of the torsion balance survey, and the calculator then splits the struc-ture into blocks, and calculates the gradient and differ-ential curvature block by block. If, as rather usual, the calculated .gradient and differential curvature pro-files diverge considerably from, the respective observed ones, it is necessary to add and subtract blocks from the cross-section until a close agreement is obtained .between the calculated and observed profiles. The com-plete calculations have to be gone through for each block that is added or subtracted.

The importance of the conservation of the waste heat contained in copper reverberatory furnace gases was realized very early by those in charge of operation at Anaconda. The first attempt to utilize it was in preheating the air used for combustion of the coal. This was done by forcing the air through ducts surrounding the flue-gas downtake and continued down beneath the furnace hearth to the firebox. Any small advantage gained by the heat transferred from the flue gases was more than offset by the losses sustained in cooling the hearth, therefore this process, after several trials, was soon discarded. It was first used at the Old Works as early as 1893 and again for a comparatively short time on the original furnaces at the Washoe smelter, or present works. Water-tube boilers came into general use very rapidly after 1890. Their adaptability for waste-heat steam generation, as well as the saving to be effected by the production of cheap steam from this source, was soon recognized. The first waste-heat boiler to be used in connection with a matte furnace at Anaconda was installed in September, 1900, at the "Old Lower Works." It consisted of a 100-hp. "Cook," vertical water-tube boiler. This boiler had 65 small perpendicular tubes arranged in concentric circles around a 10-in. tube in the center. These tubes were expanded into 4 ft. 4 in. inside diameter cylindrical steel top and bottom drums which served as the steam and mud drums respectively. This boiler was set in a cylindrical brick housing into which the furnace gases entered just above the mud drum and thence circulated upward around the tubes and steam drum to the stack. This installation proved unsatisfactory, presumably on account of difficulty with dust, and was soon abandoned. However, the possibilities for steam generation were undoubtedly encouraging for shortly afterwards (December, 1900) a 300-hp. Stirling boiler was installed, to be followed by two more in the spring of 1901. The choice of the Stirling type of boiler for application to copper reverberatory furnaces was particularly fortunate, as the arrangement of the tubes appears to combine to a great extent the maximum contact of the gases with the heating surfaces of the boiler and at the same time

The study that is presented here was undertaken in order to condense information concerning comminution, and covering a great variety of conditions, into one or several rules which would be of use in the development of a systematic theory as well as in many directly practical ways. As the result of this work, the following conclusions appear justified: 1. Rocks may be classified, from the point of view of comminution, into two general classes which are (a) structurally homogeneous, and (b) structurally heterogenous. Structurally homogeneous rocks are those in which fracture takes place through grains and grain boundaries alike; heterogeneous rocks are those in which fracture passes in preference through grain boundaries. 2. If a sized product composed of structurally homogeneous rock grains is crushed, a product results in which the relation between the percentage weight of grains of various sizes and these sizes themselves follows a definite law. This is not true of structurally heterogeneous rocks. 3. Ball milling with structurally homogeneous rocks, and under certain conditions, presents exceptions to this rule. 4. In ball milling with structurally homogeneous rocks, there exists a critical ratio of size of feed to size of balls, above which the machine operates essentially by surface wear, and below which it operates essentially by breaking across the body of the particle. 5. In ball milling, with structurally homogeneous rocks, and when the size of feed grains exceeds the critical size, the particles worn off are of a substantially definite size which depends upon the ball size. 6. In the case of a typical heterogeneous rock, such as Manhattan schist, particles are crushed in such a way that there is a greater proportion of grains of the size that is the average grain-size of the rock than there would be in that range of size with a structurally homogeneous rock. This has been found to be true with all the crushers tested. 7. Different methods of crushing produce grains of different shapes. 8. It is the purpose of this paper to present a limited amount of experimental data obtained on the Charpy impact machine. Several concrete examples will be given showing the relation existing between the results obtained upon the Charpy impact machine and the behavior of the parts tested when in service. Although it is pointed out by G. Charpy and A. Cornu-Thenard1 that it is first necessary to determine a satisfactory working process before studying the correlation between the results of these tests and the behavior of the parts tested in service, this ideal course cannot be strictly adhered to. If a certain part repeatedly fails in service and the available tests give no indication of its cause, advantage must be taken of any possible means that will solve the problem; therefore, even though the reliability of the results obtained by the Charpy impact machine have been questioned by many, it was necessary to use this instrument without giving careful consideration to its possible sources of error. It would seem that the conclusions arrived at by Charpy -and Cornu-Thenard justify the assumption that the precision obtained by this machine is comparable to that obtained by the other more common forms of testing. The second general conclusion arrived at by them, namely, that the impact test upon notching does not offer any direct correlation to the ordinary tests, is also borne out by many hundred determinations made in the laboratories at Watertown Arsenal. This statement, however, should be qualified as follows: Other ordinary tests include the static tensile test from bars taken in a longitudinal direction and the Brinell hardness. The author agrees that no law is yet known for the computation of the energy absorbed in the rupture of bars of the same material but of different dimensions. Although Charpy and Cofnu-Thenard do not refer in their valuable article to the use of the Charpy machine in industrial practice, it should be stated that this instrument has been in constant use in the laboratory at Watertown Arsenal for several years, and is now employed for both routine and experimental testing.

Before the year 1909, no measurements of dust losses and flue gases had been made at the Copper Queen Reduction Works, at Douglas, Ariz. At that time the "unaccounted" loss of the smelter had reached a figure that drew attention to the possibility of large stack losses. The measurement of dust losses had not been studied much at that time, and estimates of dust losses, with a few exceptions, were the results of tests by what has been termed '(chemical methods," that is, the aspiration and filtration through cotton, wool or some similar medium of a few liters of gas, the dust being weighed on a chemical balance, and the volume of gas computed from the volume of aspirator water. The possible error of this method is enormous, and the probable error much too large for reliable results. Since the object of these tests was to discover not only the extent of the dust losses, but also the possibility of profitably reducing them, it was decided that the method adopted must have the following characteristics: 1. The sample of gas taken for filtration must be representative of the whole volume of gas, that is to say, it must have the same dust content. This condition will be fulfilled in all cases if the gas sample is drawn off without change of rate of flow. Then it will contain the same proportion of entrained or suspended particles of dust as the original gas. In the case of flue gases which contain only fume, at a temperature above or near the sublimation point, this condition need not be adhered to since the fume will not behave as entrained particles, but more nearly as a true gas. Consequently the gas sample in this case only may be drawn off at any rate of flow. 2. The gas sample taken must be large enough (a) to yield sufficient dust to permit of accurate chemical and physical examination; (b) so that the ratio of the total volume of gas passing through the flue to the volume of gas sample taken shall not be too large.

Our entry into the World War suddenly brought home to us in a startling way the vital importance of manganese. Since the war, much has been written and said upon the subject of manganese and a great deal of time and money have been spent in attempts to find an adequate substitute for this metal in the manufacture of steel; none has been found. It is true that ways are known by which it is possible to make small amounts of good steel without manganese, but taking into consideration the diminishing quality of iron ores and fuels as well as the increasing exaction of specifications for finished products, it may safely be assumed that, high-grade manganese ore will be more and more a necessity in the production of steel as time goes on. Taking world resources as a whole it may be well to point out that the problem of obtaining needed supplies of manganese from a strictly commercial viewpoint is now less serious than it was before the war. Formerly it was feared that world resources of high-grade manganese ore might be exhausted in a relatively short time, but, largely as a result of the stress laid upon the importance of manganese during the war, the world's available supply of high-grade manganese ore has been greatly augmented by new discoveries and fuller development of previously known deposits. Sources of Production Russia alone, of countries producing the major part of the world's stee1, has within its geographical boundaries sufficient manganese to supply its needs. The domestic production of England is inadequate and English requirements for high-grade manganese are supplied principally from India. France also draws largely upon India, as it depends upon foreign sources of supply except with respect to a small tonnage of silico-manga-nese and silico-spiegel produced in the Hautes-Pyrénées. Germany and the United States likewise depend upon foreign sources of high-grade ore, though each possesses comparatively large reserves of ferruginous manganese ore and manganiferous iron ore. At present the world demand for high-grade manganese ore is met with ease by the production of Russia, India, Gold Coast and Brazil.

There are two essentially different 'types of case-hardening processes; that using a dry mixture in which the object to be case-hardened is packed and kept for the necessary time at the necessary temperature, and the "liquid" proccss, employing a bath of fused salts into which the object is immersed and which by immediate contact case-hardens the surface of the article. The Shimer process belongs to the second class, and was a war emergency invention. Of the liquid melts used as baths, the most effective and most frequently used are melted potassium cyanide and melted sodium cyanide. These may be used either pure or mixed with salts that reduce the melting point and the percentage of .cyanide present. The use of these baths since 1914 has met many commercial difficulties because of the high price and frequent commercial scarcity of the cyanide salts; at present sodium cyanide has practically entirely displaced potassium cyanide. Another trouble is the danger to the workmen handling the cyanide salts, which are extremely poisonous, and the annoying and poisonous vapors or gases given off in the workshop, unless an effective system of hoods and ventilation is provided, so as to prevent the gases from the baths mixing with the air of the room. Porter W. Shimer, of Easton, Pa., has invented a substitute1 for the bath of melted cyanides which case-hardens with equal or greater facility and effectiveness, gives off no poisonous vapors, and costs for chemicals materially less than the cyanide costs in the previously used baths. The process has been in use over a year in a large American works and the following statement embodies the results of practical experience in the use and operation of the process. The Shimer liquid or melted bath consists of a mixture of easily fusible salts that do not possess case-hardening properties, into which is immersed fresh calcium eyanamid, which imparts to the bath case-hardening properties. The composition of the non-case-hardening salts appears rather immaterial. Good results have been obtained by using a mixture of sodium chloride, calcium chloride, and barium chloride in equal proportions by weight; also a mixture of one part sodium chloride

Discussion of the paper of Woolsey McA. Johnson, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 79, July, 1913, pp. 1137 to 1145. F. L. GRAMMER, Leesburg, Va. (communication to the Secretary *):-Mr. Johnson's paper must interest by suggestion those connected with the " burning " of lime, the production of cement, and the smelting of iron. All iron men know how quickly the impalpable purple ore of wet origin reduces compared to finely ground red hematites of approximately identical composition obtained from Lake lump ores. Most housekeepers appreciate that the several forms of carbon-charcoal, coke, and anthracite, not to include graphite and diamond -have different temperatures of ignition. The temperature usually rises with the density and hardness. Some of the scientific bureaus of the government might appropriately conduct some tests along lines suggested by Mr. Johnson's article. We are unable to say whether the topic lies within the spheres of activity of the Bureau of Mines, the Bureau of Soils (Agricultural Department), the Geological Survey, or the Bureau of Standards. The calcining qualities of limestone is a topic too wide for individual effort and is of wide enough interest to merit government or State activity. It is of interest, as aforesaid, to burners of lime, cement manufacturers, and smelters. The chemical composition of a limestone does not tell all the story -if over 1-in. size lumps. The limestones of Annville and Myerstown, Pa., break at a tap; those on the Hudson above Poughkeepsie .act like "nigger heads." The manager of lime kilns near Lake Champlain told me his fuel consumption was high compared to that at other points. Yet the Hudson and Annville stones were both of greatest purity, being rivaled by only the marble at Rutland, Vt., or some stones near Martinsburg, W. Va. A local kiln operator says the conglomerate or pudding limestones of Loudoun county, Va., act very differently in the kiln from the more normal limestone deposits nearby. The tilted and twisted bedding in the anthracite region tells the story of hard coal origin. We might therefore expect that the limestones of greater geological age or depth or metamorphism

The low-temperature carbonization of coal involves the carrying out of the coking process under conditions wherein neither the coal mass nor any of the passageways through which the volatile products pass are heated above 700" or 800" C. For convenience in this discussion, the single number 750" will be used to designate the maximum range. This temperature is not selected arbitrarily; it is the result of certain natural conditions that are inherent in the substances involved. Two of these conditions arc sufficiently pronounced to suggest a line of demarcation at this point as follows: (1) Below 750°, all the heavy hydrocarbons are expelled, which means that, at these lower temperatures, the illuminants, the gases of high calorific value, and the condensible oils are discharged; above 750") there are given off the lean, non-illuminating gases consisting for the most part of hydrogen and marsh gas and having no condensible constituents present. (2) Below 750") there is substantially no secondary decomposition; above 750") the volatile products are readily decomposed, forming tars, naphthalene, free carbon, etc. It is not intended to maintain that no secondary decompositions occur below 750". Many recent studies have demonstrated the practicability, especially in the presence of catalytic substances, of cracking certain of the hydrocarbon compounds; but at these lower temperatures the step is a moderate one, as, for- example, from xylene to toluene or from toluene to an anthracene. These changes are moderate in amount. Not only do the reactions proceed slowly but they are subjected to the decomposing . conditions for only a short time. This is evident when it is recalled that at these initial temperatures the decomposition of the coal is very rapid and, if anywhere near a neutral pressure is maintained, the movement of the evolved gases is lively and reduces, correspondingly, the time for the retention of the gases in the passageways where these milder decomposing conditions exist. It is acknowledged that the maintenance of these temperature conditions at the present time has only an ideal and not a practical status. Twelve years ago, the Director of the United States Geological Survey addressed to the Secretary of the Interior a letter calling attention to the government's need for liquid fuel for naval use and pointing out that the rate of increase in demand was more rapid than the increase in production.' This letter, in a way, inaugurated the policy of public oil-land withdrawals, which was well founded in its primary purpose of protecting the oil industry and highly desirable in its immediate effect of checking the over-development of that day in California. Unfortunately, however, through delays in legislation, this policy may be regarded now as having outlived both its intent and its usefulness. In 1908, the country's production of oil was 178,500,000 bbl., and there was a surplus above consumption of more than 20,000,000 bbl. available to go into storage. In 1918, 10 years later, the oil wells of the United States yielded 356,000,000 bb1.—nearly twice the yield of 1908—but to meet the demands of the increased consumption more than 24,000,000 bbl. had to be drawn from storage. Nor is this all of the brief comparison. In 1918, our excess of imports over exports of crude petroleum was nearly 33,000,000 bbl. whereas in 1908 we exported 3,500,000 bbl., which was net, as we had not begun to import Mexican oil. In this period, the annual fuel-oil consumption of the railroads alone has increased from 16,871,000 to 36,714,000 bbl.; the annual gasoline production from 540,000,000 gal. to 3,500,000,000 gal. This record may be taken not only as justifying the earlier appeal for Federal action, but as warranting deliberate attention to the oil problem of today. Need of Future Supply The position of the United States in regard to oil can best be characterized as precarious. Using more than one-third of a billion barrels a year, we are drawing not only from the underground pools but also from storage, and both of these supplies are limited. In 1918, the contribu-

In my last report on Petroleum in Burma and India1, details were given of production and development up to 1932. It was pointed nut, that the only statements available for Burma were those published officially by' the Government of India in the Annual Review of the Mineral Production of India (Records of the Geological Survey of India), which are issued about 10 or 11 months after the close of the year. Operations in Burma are almost entirely in the hands of three companies—the Burmah Oil Co., the British Burmah Petroleum Co. (with its subsidiary, the Rangoon Oil Co.) and the Indo-Burma Petroleum Co.—and these companies preserve a policy of secrecy, so that details are not available of new wells, depth, wells abandoned, or of other figures, except in so far as the Government considers it advisable to publish the information in its possession. GeneRal Developments in 1933-1934 As predicted in 1933, there have been no spectacular developments and no new fields have been discovered. Nor are there any new indications of a likelihood of fresh discoveries. The policy of extremely careful exploitation. has been continued and intensified; production is being maintained at an almost steady level and can be so maintained for many years to come—indeed, it is the policy of the leading company to permit refinery and local market requirements to dictate the production required. Contrary to experience in practically every other part of the world, India has shown a slightly decreased demand for petroleum products—especially kerosene, but also for gasoline. The increased use of electricity would explain the lower demand for kerosene, but the falling off in the demand for gasolinc can only be attributed, according to the Chairman of the Burmah Oil Co., to the depression and to the incidence of heavy taxation. In India (including Burma) as a whole, production was 305,018,751 Imperial gallons in 1931 (8,714,822 U. S. barrels); 308,606,031 Imp. gal. in 1932; 306,009,022 in 1933 and is estimated at 308,000,000 in 1934.

IN a previous article' the authors outlined a study of the variables in rod milling and also reported data from a series of open circuit grinding tests on a massive limestone in a 30-in. x 4-ft end peripheral discharge rod mill. As a second part of the experimental program, an analysis is now presented for the 30-in. x 4-ft overflow rod mill grinding under identical conditions, except that discharge ports on the periphery of the mill shell have been sealed so that the products from the present series overflowed through a 9-in. diam .opening in the center of the end plate. A variance analysis has been made of the combined data for the two experiments, and performances of the two mills are compared here. Included in the first report' were descriptions of feed preparation, rod mill circuit, instrumentation and controls, and techniques used to evaluate data. Dependent and independent variables were defined, and variance analyses were made to test the relative significance of variables and to establish magnitude of error for the experiment. Significant data were plotted in various combinations, and conclusions were drawn from the graphs. The procedure and analysis in this series of tests follows the first tests and is not repeated. Data from the second series are recorded in Table I. Listed in the first three columns are the independent variables of feed rate (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 5000 1b per hr), mill speed (50, 60, 70, 80, and 90 pct of critical), and pulp density (50, 60, 70, and 80 pct). The dependent variables, Pso, P100, reduction ratio, slope of the log-log sieve analysis curve, power demand, and Bond work index follow. Of these, only the reduction ratio and the Bond work index were analyzed for significance. Production of new surface as calculated from sieve analyses has not been included for this series because of the questionable assumptions that have to be made to satisfy the formulas involved. The large number of products obtained during the runs precluded the use of surface measurement techniques by the gas adsorption methods at this time; however, samples of all products have been stored for future reference. To test the consistency of the reporting of the sieved products, an averaged sieve analysis was calculated from the wet-dry plots obtained from the three product samples of each run. The resulting averaged analysis was plotted and the P80, selected. The relative deviations of the P80's from each of the three product samples with respect to the P80 of the averaged analysis were then calculated. In only two sets were the relative deviations (6.2 and 9.9 pct) considered excessive. In each of these two sets, one sieve analysis was obviously out of line; hence that analysis was ignored and new averages were computed. This reduced the relative deviations to 1.2 and 2.7 pct respectively. The relative deviations of the product analyses with respect to their averages ranged from 0.1 to 1.4 pct at 1000 lb per hr, 0.0 to 1.1 pct at 2000 lb per hr, 0.2 to 3.0 pct at 3000 lb per hr, 0.3 to 4.3 pct at 4000 lb per hr, and 0.5 to 5.2 pct at 5000 lb per hr. The relative deviation of the 80 pct passing point for 96 dry sieve analyses of the feed with respect to that of the averaged analysis was 7.6 pct. This slightly higher percentage can probably be attributed to a greater proportion of tramp oversize in a crusher product than is ordinarily found in a rod mill product. The last column on Table I lists the adjusted work index, which has been used as the measure of efficiency for the various combinations of operating conditions investigated. Efficiency increases as the index becomes lower. It was reported in the previous paper that the work indexes for the Waukesha limestone used in these experiments decreased as the product size decreased (as calculated from Bond grindabilities). That is, this limestone becomes easier to grind as the material becomes finer. This is unusual, because the work index for most materials as calculated from the Bond grindability has remained constant as the product size decreased or has increased slightly. Table II lists the results of Bond grindability tests at all mesh sizes from 3 to 200 and the work indexes calculated from them. To remove this variation of work index with product size from the data so that results would apply to any material of constant work index, the work index values shown in Table II were plotted against product size on log-log paper. From this curve (a straight line function in this case), the expected work index for the product size for each of the runs of the experiment was obtained. The work indexes as calculated from the reduction ratio and energy consumption were then divided by the corresponding expected work index. The results obtained are reported in percentages on Table I as adjusted work index and are actually percentages of the work index for the Waukesha limestone at the size in question. Multiplication of the work index value for a material of constant index by these percentages should allow the application of the adjusted work index curves to the material. Only the adjusted work index values, not the actual experimental values, were used for the variance analyses and for the graphs.

TRANSPORTING concrete from mixer to forms has always been a problem. Twenty-five years ago this task was generally accomplished by means of wheelbarrow or concrete buggy. On large dam jobs, as the number of these projects increased, the gantry crane or highline came into use. Today several methods of handling concrete are employed on smaller surface construction jobs, for example, transit-mix trucks or dumpcrete trucks, which have crawler cranes with buckets for placing concrete into forms. In 1944, during early stages of developing Mather mine A shaft, several large underground concrete jobs were necessary. At this time the Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Co, purchased the first pump-crete machine, introduced by the Chain Belt Co. of Milwaukee. The machine was used to pour approximately 200 cu yd of concrete for a dam, or bulkhead, located 400 ft from the shaft. Concrete was mixed on surface, lowered down the shaft 1000 ft in a 2-cu yd bucket hung under one skip, spouted into the bowl of the pumpcrete machine from the bucket, and pumped directly into the forms. Since the day of the first pipeline concrete in 1944 to the present time, other equipment and other methods have been developed to permit transportation of concrete by pipeline through vertical and horizontal distances totaling 1 mile from mixer to forms. Much of the efficiency in present handling of underground concrete can be credited to the Bethlehem Cornwall mines, where concrete was transported through 6-in. pipe for great distances down an inclined shaft and along levels into forms.' During initial development of Mather mine B shaft, with concrete work under way on two or more levels at one time, the pneumatic concrete placer, Fig. 1, was selected as best adapted for underground concrete transportation. The 3/4-cu yd pneumatic placer is a small machine readily moved from one location in the mine to another. It can be equipped with two sets of mine car wheels, which will permit moving on regular mine tracks. It is therefore possible to send concrete through the pipe at great velocity; the pipeline is clean after each shot except for the film of cement adhering to the inside. With the proper slump in the concrete, it is possible to shoot concrete 2000 ft with this machine, using the mine supply of compressed air at 95 psi. This equipment was first used at Mather mine B shaft to concrete slusher drifts, Figs. 2 and 3, and finger raises located about 2000 ft from the shaft. In several instances there were bends into crosscuts and up vertical distances into the forms. For the first pours two placers were used. The first was located near the shaft where the concrete could be spouted into it from a 2-cu yd concrete bucket on the cage. The second was set on the side of the drift at a point approximately 1500 ft from the shaft. The concrete was shot directly into the second placer from the first unit and from the second machine directly into the forms. After completion of several pours with the two machines, a trial pour with only one placer located at the shaft proved that the second placer could be eliminated. Since then all pours have been successfully completed with only one placer underground. As production of iron ore from the mine increased and the development program expanded, use of the cage for handling mine supplies and concrete became a major problem. This brought about the first attempt at shooting concrete vertically down the shaft for 2600 ft. A 6-in. pipeline with victaulic couplings installed during shaft sinking was used for the trial. One placer was set on surface 250 ft from the collar of the shaft so concrete could be spouted directly into it from the mixer. This machine shot the concrete 250 ft horizontally on surface to the shaft, 2600 ft vertically down the shaft, and 100 ft horizontally into the second placer located near the rib of the shaft station or plat. The second machine shot the batch into the forms, about 2000 ft. Total distance horizontally and vertically was 4800 ft. The entire time cycle for a ¾-cu yd batch of concrete from the mixer on surface to the forms underground totaled about 5 min. During the past two years the two-placer method from the mixer on surface to the forms underground has proved a very efficient means of transporting underground concrete. Advantages of using pipeline concrete are as follows: 1—Interference with normal mining operation is eliminated. When the cage, skips, mine cars, or mine openings are used for transporting concrete and materials used for making concrete, mine operation suffers in one way or another.

As electrical power is used to a greater extent on the Rand than in any other mining center, it is thought that a short description of the methods used and results obtained may be of interest. In comparing Rand practice with that on other fields, several general factors should be borne in mind: First, the mines are all working on large tonnages of low-grade ore (average. $6.50). The annual crushing rate is about 27,000,000 tons. Second, the mines are all grouped udder the financial and engineering control of mining houses, so that the results of a group, rather than an individual mine, are open for study, and practice follows more uniform lines. Third, coal of fair quality (about 12,000 B.t.u.) can be obtained for $2 to $3 per ton., Good supplies of condensing water are, however, scarce, and have to be carefully stored. Power Supply Power is supplied by the Victoria Falls & Transvaal Power Co., Ltd., and its subsidiary, the Rand Mines Power Supply Co. Both companies, which are practically one from an engineering point of view, operate the following stations, all feeding into the same system.

Requirements concerning determination of geometric characteristics and estimate of reserves and grade may in various mineral deposits significantly differ and by no means can be completely envisaged. Therefore, program writing which would in advance meet all requirements is from a practical point of view impossible. Programming for each particular project is also unacceptable solution, due to many facts, among which is ever growing scope of work and the terms to be met. Therefore, conventional method of programming proved to be ineffective. The team of the Mining Institute experts came to the conclusion that the solution of facing problems lies in the idea of introducing specialized programs, instead of complex ones. Each of them represents a functional entirety. Procedure of complete mineral deposits computer processing is described by a problem-oriented programming language which was designed for that particular application. One or more than one specialized programs are called by one instruction so that the program in that language can have a few hundred time less instructions than an equivalent FORTRAN program. Besides description of the program system and programming language the paper also covers some aspects of its application in solving complex problems.

All the members present successively contributed details from their personal experience. The March meeting of the Section was held at its headquarters on Mar. 15. Twelve members were present, with Dr. Theodore B. Comstock in the Chair. The subject announced was Secondary Enrichment and all present took part in the discussion, Frank Robbins contributing a short paper on some observations in Central America. THE use of minute boron additions to steel has been given considerable attention in recent years. Comparisons made between boron-free and boron-containing heats of otherwise identical analysis have indicated, beyond a doubt, the potent effect of boron for increasing hardenability. The actual hardenability increase has been expressed as a multiplying factor, or in terms of the percentage of other alloying elements boron might replace, The present study presents the results of a systematic survey of. the use of boron as an addition to two types of alloyed steels and as a replacement for various percentages of molybdenum in these steels, Both cast and wrought steels of the two basic compositions were prepared. Molybdenum, because of its scarcity at the time the investigation was started, was selected as the element to be replaced by boron. Attention was also given to the effects of boron on other properties of the steels, particularly their notched-bar toughness, to investigate other advantages or limitations of this element as an alloy addition. EXPERIMENTAL WORK Steels Investigated The two basic compositions used in this survey of boron as a replacement for molybdenum are given in Table I. The cast steels were higher than the wrought steels in silicon content to improve the casting quality. [ ] Each of these base steels, both cast and wrought, was made with molybdenum contents of o, 0.10, 0.20, 0.30, or 0.40 per cent, the total comprising 20 steels. In addition, each of these 20 compositions . was prepared with boron additions in amounts of 0.0015, 0.003, and o,006 per cent as ferroboron; and in amounts of 0.002 and 0.005 per cent as two com¬mercial intensifier alloys, designated alloys A and B. The boron-treated steels totaled 100, and the entire series 120, Test Procedure Each steel was melted as an individual heat in a 50-lb., magnesia-lined induction furnace. Ingot iron scrap or mixtures of ingot iron and steel scrap were used for melting stock. Deoxidation was carried out in the furnace with o.10 per cent aluminum. The aluminum addition was
