The problem of drying ores is one that most mill-engvineers are sooner or later called upon to meet, and it may be timely to point out some of the difficulties resulting from such operations from purely a metallurgical and economic standpoint. We mean, in the following pages, to discuss primarily the effect of such operations on the ore. itself, without particular reference to the mechanical or cost features of the subject. That an appreciable tonnage of the ore fed to the usual form of drier, either rotary or stack, is lost, is fairly well appreciated, but we believe that only a few mill-managers know just what their drier-losses amouilt to, and we have found that in most cases they console themselves with the fact that the drier-smoke is not very much discolored, and it is generally believed that the draft is not sufficient to carry away more than a negligible percentage of the values.

Sinking an inclined ventilation shaft at the Never Sweat mine of The Anaconda Co. has required a unique underground hoisting arrangement because the shaft changes direction from vertical to 71.5º. Access to the project is made through the High Ore shaft to the 2800-ft level, then by crosscut to the bottom of the vertical Never Sweat shaft. The 71.5º incline shaft starts at this point, which makes an unusual operation as the 60-cu ft sinking skip coming up the incline changes into a vertical position above the 2800-ft level before going into the dump scrolls. This requires both rollers and guide shoes on the skip. Coming up the incline to the collar of the shaft the loaded skip enters into a guard before reaching the vertical section. The tendency of the surface- mounted Never Sweat hoist is to lift the front wheels of the skip off the track, so the guard keeps the skip on the rails during the transition.

The haulage system at the International Minerals T & Chemical Corp. (IMC) potash mine near Carlsbad, N. M., reached a turning point in December 1956 with the introduction of rope suspended belt haulage. In fact, IMC pioneered the use of this type of belt in the potash industry. Since that time belt conveyance has been employed as an extension of the rail system but not as a replacement of the main rail haulage. IMC's potash mine is located in the Permian Basin, approximately 20 miles east of Carlsbad. From three levels, the 800-ft, 850-ft and 900-ft, over 60 million tons have been extracted. Langbeinite (K,SO,. 2MgS0,) is mined on the 850 level and sylvite (KCl) on the 900 level. The 800 level, with both langbeinite and sylvite mineralization, is idle. Mining heights vary from 54 in. to more than 10 ft. A room and pillar mining system is used.

A general relalionship between the amount of glide shear (due to slip) and the macroscopic shape change has been developed. Since the deformation can be large, finite strain analysis is employed. In this treatnzent, the shape change is expressed by a deforlnation gradient matrix, F - [axi/aXj/ where X and x refer lo the initial and final positions of a particle. This matrix is readily evaluated in termas of the amounl of glide shear, a , and the direction cosines of the slip-plane normal and the slip direction for a single active slip systena. In the case of deforma tion from slip on several systems, the product F(a) of the several deformation gradient matrices is first calculated. Then, by assuming that the final configuration is reached by a long series of small shears of magnitude a, occurring more or less alternately in the several slip sys- IN problems of crystal plasticity, it is often necessary to relate the amount of glide in the operating slip systems to the macroscopic strain components. This relationship is relatively simple when only small strains are considered. In this case the separate strain contributions from several slip systems are additive. Such a procedure is incorrect in the case of large plastic deformation. To the authors' knowledge, no general treatment of the latter problem has appeared in the literature. In specific instances, Mark, Polanyi, and schmid3 have derived the relationship between glide and axial elongation during tensile pulling of a single crystal when only one slip system is active. A similar relationship for duplex slip was worked out by v. Göler and Sachs.4 Taylor and Elam1 have also studied in detail problems of large plastic deformation. Due to uncertainties as to the slip systems at the time, ! terns, the final deformation gradient matrix can be obtained. Mathematically, the problem is reduced to finding the limit of F(aN as N — m while a — 0 in such a way that the Product Na = a finite conslant designatzng the accumulated amount of shear. It turns out that this limit is simply eafF1, where F, is the matrix whose elements are the coefficients of a in the F(a) twatrzx. Application is made of the present treatment to a fcc crystal of Permalloy compressed on the (110) plane and contrained to elongate in the [112] directzon. In addition, it is shown that one rnay readily obtain from the general analyszs the well-known formulas relating elongation, amount of glide shear, and amount of lattice rotation for crystals deforming by single and double slip under tension. however, they were mainly concerned with proving that slip occurs on {111}(110) systems in fcc metals. The present general treatment arose out of recent investigations of magnetic anisotropy in cold-worked Fe-Ni alloys6 as well as some related problems in strength anisotropy of single crystals.' Detailed application of the general analysis will be provided in the case of a Permalloy single crystal compressed on the (110) plane and constrained to elongate only in the [112] direction. It will be seen that, as expected, the small strain approximation leads to significant errors after moderate straining. It will also be shown that the present general treatment yields the formulas of Mark et al. and of v. Goler and Sachs in those specific cases. Small iron particles in mercury pow by diffusion of iron atoms through the mercury. Iron particles, with diameters about 200Å, have been stopped from gvowing in size, even up to the boiling point of mercury, by the addition of a third metal. The metal additives were classified according to whether they produced 1) negligible inhibition, 2) some inhibition, or 3) marked inhibition of the growth rate. Metal additives which resulted in a marked inhibition of iron-particle growth form a stable monolayer on the iron particles. Only those metals which may form compounds with iron showed this pronounced effect. The one exception was manganese. Metal additives which resulted in no inhibition of growth, showed no evidence for adsorption and could not form compounds with iron. None of the added metals, even those which strongly inhibited particle gvowth and thus had adsorbed on the particle surface, actually formed any compounds with iron at room temperature at the concentrations required for complete inhibition of growth. ThE stabilization of the size and shape of metallic particles dispersed in liquid metals has important technological implications in "homogeneous" nuclear reactor systems and in elongated particle magnets and is directly related to the problem of corrosion by liquid metals. Growth in these par-ticulate systems may occur by diffusion of atoms from surfaces of high energy, corresponding to a small radius of curvature, to surfaces of low energy or large radius of curvature. Thus, small particles dissolve and large particles grow to increase the average diameter of the particles. reenwood' has analyzed this diffusional growth of a system of particles containing a distribution of sizes and has obtained reasonable agreement with data on the growth of uranium particles in liquid sodium and UPb3 particles in liquid lead. Greenwood concluded from his analysis that the chief factors promoting stability of dispersed particles growing by a diffusion mechanism are large mean radius, high density, and low molecular weight with low values of the solute diffusion coefficient, the solubility, and the interfacial tension. In the case of elongated particle magnets the system of interest is that of iron particles dis- persed in mercury. Previous work,2 concerned with "spherical" particles in mercury, has indicated a diffusional growth mechanism similar to that discussed by Greenwood. It has also been shown3'4 that the addition of certain metals to Fe-Hg dispersions results in the formation of a monatomic layer of adsorbed atoms on the iron particles. In this paper we will show that this adsorbed layer provides the decrease in the iron-atom flux through the mercury necessary for size stabilization. The general features of the stabilization of the iron particles in mercury through the formation of this "coating", with many different metals, will be described. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Iron particles in mercury were prepared by elec-trodeposition,2, 4 and measurements2, 4 of coercive force HCi) and saturation induction (Is) were used to follow changes in size and composition during thermal aging in the mercury in the presence of relatively small amounts of an added metal. In Fig. 1 is plotted the aging behavior of spherical particle samples in the presence of some of the added metals to be discussed. The iron particles have an initial average diameter of 180Å. Each sample was aged for 20 min at each temperature in succession in the presence of a twofold to threefold excess of added metal over that required to form a monolayer on the iron particles. Mr. Agelopas is to be congratulated on a fine paper. Although the presentation was simple and concise, you will all appreciate that a great deal of hard work went into the development of this highly successful repair method. Earlier this year Bethlehem invited a group of our people to witness lug repairs at their Sparrow's Point plant. We have since made lug replacements on a trial basis using their method. The repaired moulds are now back in service. We will compare their performance with regular moulds and with moulds repaired by a technique developed by Dofasco weld shop personnel. I would like to explain briefly some of the various types of ingot mould repairs presently undertaken at Dofasco. The first problem will be familiar to most of you. The lower inside edge of a mould wall may be damaged by spalling, a runout or by the washing action of steel deflected from a badly worn stool cavity. We repair this type of damage by welding.

DISCUSSION, A. Y. Bethune presiding M. E. Wadsworth and W. M. Fassell (University of Utah, Salt Lake City)—The authors of this paper should be complimented on the experimental techniques they have employed to investigate the rate of solution of galena in sodium hydroxide solution. Studies of this type are important not only as a practical means of leaching normally non-leachable substances, but also to determine the mechanism of solution at the solid-aqueous solution interface. There is some question, however, as to the conclusions which have been drawn by these authors concerning their proposed mechanism. Unfortunately, the contribution of OH- was not definitely established in their work, and concentrations less than 0.5 N NaOH evidently were not investigated. The pressure data at 123°C and 0.5 N NaOH were used to determine pressure dependency and the subsequent model proposed was taken as correct on the basis of the three points presented in Fig. 5 of the paper. The Alligator Ridge Project is owned jointly by Amselco Minerals Inc. and Occidental Minerals, with Amselco being the operator. It is the latest of Nevada' s gold heap leaching operations , having gone into operation in October of 1980 after a design and construction period of only seven and one-half months. Alligator Ridge is located about 77 km (48 miles) northwest of Ely, Nevada. Three separate but adjacent ore bodies will be mined: Vantage I, II and III. The first lies virtually at the surface and is totally oxidized; the second is somewhat deeper and contains some carbonaceous material; and the third is at the lowest horizon and contains substantial carbonaceous ore. The ore is a Carlin- type siltstone which has been silicified, especially at depth, and contains finely disseminated free gold. Exploration drilling on Alligator Ridge resulted in the defining of an ore reserve of about 4.54 million mt (5 million st) averaging 4. 12 g Au per mt (0. 12 oz Au per st). A pilot heap leaching program was run during 1979. Because of the high content of fine material in portions of the ore body, one test heap of 5,000 tons was leached, after being crushed to 19 mm (314 in.), in the conventional manner using cyanide and caustic while a second heap of 2,500 tons of ore was agglomerated with cement before leaching. Results of this work were reported at the 1980 American Mining Congress meeting by Paul Chamberlin (see Bibliography). The test work clearly indicated the superior leaching qualities of the agglomerated ore, and the plant was designed on this basis. Run-of-mine ore is crushed in an open-air crushing plant using a jaw crusher followed by two cone crushers, one standard and one shorthead. Provision was made to bypass the shorthead when the ore is wet from rain or snow. Crushed ore at 19 mm (314 in.) size is mixed with cyanide solution and cement, with the ratio of the latter to the ore being 2 to 5 kg per mt (4 to 10 lb per st). The resulting moisture content is about 870, and the fines are effectively bound to the coarse particles so that migration of the fines in the heap does not take place during leaching. For agglomeration, Amselco uses a rotating drum 2. 75 m 0 by 6 m long (9 ft 6 by 20 ft). For the same agglomeration, Candelaria uses three "grasshopper" conveyors, with introduction of caustic- cyanide solution at the conveyor transfer points. Provision was made for future addition of cement slurry at these same points.

The vacuum filter operating variables that influence cake moisture are discussed. The influence of temperature control, particularly through application of steam to the cake, is emphasized. Results of pilot plant studies on filtration of fine hematite concentrates are presented and discussed, and are shown to support the theoretically-derived conclusions. Results on fine magnetite concentrates are also used to support the argument. The relative merits of disc and drum filters from the standpoint of cake moisture are discussed. Moisture content has always been recognized as one of the most important properties of concentrates used as pellet plant feed. Most iron ore concentrates are produced by wet methods, and are finally de-watered on filters. Obviously, a real economic advantage accrues to the ability of control the moisture content of the filter cake within the range required for optimum pellet production. Another consideration, also, has been receiving increasing attention recently. Transoceanic shippers of concentrate cargoes are critically assessing the hazards of excess moisture. The nature and magnitude of these risks have been described, ' and it appears that their elimination may require that residual moisture be somewhat lower than the limit for proper pelletization. Coarse, very free-filtering materials, such as the products of spirals, are usually best handled on top-feed types of machines. The moisture content of the cake may be held at a specified value by proper design and operation, taking into account cake thickness, air-flow rate, and drainage time. Fine-grained concentrates, with which we will be concerned here, must be filtered on Drum or Agidisc machines. With many of these materials, it is possible, by proper design, to meet cake moisture requirements with a conventional filter station. The first installations to produce high-grade pellets from magnetic taconites fell in this class. In fact, the design criteria were developed in connection with operations of Reserve Mining Co. at Silver Bay, inn.,2 and these have been verified repeatedly in other mills. The trend today, however, is toward the production of more difficultly dewatered concentrates. This is due on the one hand to the increasing attention being given to non-magnetic ores, which tend to be far slimier, and therefore much more retentive of moisture, than the magnetites. On the other hand, the pressure to improve the grade of the magnetic ores is leading to finer grinds, which also are more difficult to dewater. In the latter case, the decision to improve grade in an existing operation by finer grinding for better liberation may lead to two unattractive alternatives: 1) substantially higher bentonite consumption, plus the risk of poorer quality pellets, from high cake moisture, or 2) installation of a thermal dryer. There is, however, a third alternative. In recent papers by two of the authors3,4 it was shown that for many materials a significant decrease in cake moisture can be obtained by applying live steam to the cake face during the drying part of the filter cycle. Further, this limited drying appears to have distinct economic advantages compared to thermal drying. It is the purpose of this paper to explore the third alternative. To do this, the results of an extensive pilot study of steam filtration of a hematite flotation concentrate will be critically examined. This study was sufficiently broad so that a number of alternate suggestions (besides steaming the cake) for reducing moisture content were tested, and comparative data for both Drum and Disc filters were obtained. The work was particularly interesting since the concentrate has a high Blaine surface, and is therefore particularly difficult to dewater to the levels required. FILTER CAKE MOISTURE The significant difference between concentrate filter cake as discharged from the filter, a cargo of that same filter cake during or after shipment, and a green ball formed from that filter cake is in the relative volume of voids, or porosity. Wright of Chicago, former Director of the Institute, as chairman. Since that time the committee has been undergoing organization, and held its initial meeting at the Museum offices in Chicago on April 11 and 12. Functioning as consultants to the Geology and Mineral Industries branch of this new institution, the advisory committee is aiding in building an exhibit which will tell the story of geology, mining, and metallurgy to millions of visitors a year. Allotropic transformations in cerium have been studied by dilatometric, resistometric, X-ray diffraction, and metallographic techniques. The dilatometric study indicated that, on cooling below O°C, the high-temperature fcc phase, y, transforms partly to the hexagonal phase, ß, and, on further cooling, to the collapsed fcc phase, a. The amount of $ phase present at room temperature is increased by repeated cycling through the a-y transformation. It has been shown metallograPhically that the y-ß transformation has many characteristics of a martensitic transformation. In contrast to the y-ß transformation the ?-a transformation does not give the manifestation of a shear transformation. Small cellular ? domains of random shape and size collapse to a in a short time with no apparent coordination with neighboring domains. The considerable confusion in the literature over the existence of more than one high-temperature fcc phase is discussed. Two such phases have been reported in the literature and an attempt is made in this study to clarify the situation. Twelve fcc and two hcp structures have been shown to be easily reproduced or eliminated. It is proposed that the two "additional" allotropes reported in the literature and fourteen of the phases detected here are not allotropes of cerium but are due to contamination. CERIUM exists in several allotropic forms, but there is some disagreement over what the forms are. Furthermore, the conditions favoring the presence of a particular allotrope and the nature of the transformations from one form to another are uncertain. The objectives of this research were 1) to ascertain the allotropic forms of cerium, 2) to establish the conditions under which the allotropes exist, 3) to study the effects of annealing and thermal cycling on the allotropic transformations, and 4) to study the transformation mechanisms. Dilatometric, resistometric, metallographic, and X-ray diffraction techniques were employed. The form of cerium commonly found at room temperature is fcc and is designated ?. A complex hexagonal phase, 8, forms when y is cooled to slightly below room temperature. At still lower temperatures the y fcc structure transforms to an fcc form with a much smaller lattice parameter, termed a cerium. A bcc form, 6, which exists just below the melting point (800°C), will not be considered further in this work. There is a substantial body of experimental evidence (reviewed by Gschneidnerl) which favors the acceptance of these four allotropes, though some investigators have tried unsuccessfully to observe the ß hexagonal form.'-' There is disagreement, however, over the phase-transformation temperatures, due, in part, to broad hysteresis and overlapping of the transformations between the a, ß, and ? forms. The transformations are also sensitive to prior thermal and mechanical treatment. The differing purity of cerium used by different investigators is undoubtedly a factor. Cerium is difficult to separate from other elements and is quite reactive, igniting spontaneously when it is filed in air. The highest purity of cerium to date is reported to contain several hundred parts per million by weight of impurities, and early investigations were carried out on cerium containing several percent of impurities. There have been reports of more than one fcc allotrope at room temperature. Gschneidner, Elliott, and McDonald5 obtained diffraction patterns of an fcc phase with a lattice parameter about 1 pct less than that of the ? phase, instead of the y phase, on slowly cooling cerium filings from 23° to -198°C and warming them back to room temperature. However, when the sample was heated to 447°C and cooled to room temperature it consisted of only the ? phase. They have designated this new fcc phase "a-? intermediate", and say it is quite sensitive to impurities. After prolonged high-temperature treatment of a powder specimen, Weiner and Raynor2 obtained a diffraction pattern of an fcc phase of lattice parameter about 1 pct less than the ? phase. This they called the y' phase. It could not be reconverted to the y phase and is claimed to be different from the a-? intermediate phase.5,6 Dialer and Rothe3 reported two fcc phases* after cycling their powder specimens between room temperature and -192°C. Gschneidner, Elliott, and McDonald5 suggested that one of the fcc structures obtained by Dialer and Rothe was equivalent to their "a-? intermediate" phase. The direct determination of the stabilized performance behavior of low capacity, slowly stabilizing gas wells is extremely time-consuming and wasteful of gas. From both field experience and theoretical considerations, a test procedure has been evolved by which the stabilized hack pressure behavior of such gas wells can he predicted without having to revert to long time flow tests. The method consists of using the isochrona1 test procedure to establish the slope of the back pressure curve, "n", and the short time variation of the performance coeficient, "C", with time. From this short time transient flow data and theoretical considerations, the value of C at large times can he established. By assuming the radius of drainage of a well to be half the distance between wells, one can calculate the stabilization time for various well spacing patterns. Once the stabilization time for a given .spacing has been determined, the value of C can be calculated and the stabilized back-pressure curve can he. establbrhed. The calculated perfortnance coefficient as a function of tinze was cotnpared to the experintentally measured values for a number of gas wel1.e. The deviation of the calc~*lated from the cxperimental res1tlt.s vary depending on the set of short time experimental points used to evabrate the parcrttzeters of the equation. The longer the tirne far the flow test data user1 in the calculations, the better was the agreement with the experimental results. The time necessary to obtain this data from well tests varies consitlerably, depending on the physical natrcre oj the rt3scrvoir under consideratiot~. INTRODUCTION For many years, the U. S. Bureau of Mines Monograph 7' has served as a guide for testing and evaluating the performance of gas wells by means of the back-pressure method. The back-pressure performance of a gas well is expressed by the following equation: Q~ CW-W.........(I) where the characteristics of the back-pressure equation are determined by C, the performance coefficient, and n, the exponent which corresponds to the slope of the straight line when Q and {P* - PN2) are plotted on logarithmic paper. Q is gas flow rate at standard conditions, and P, and P, are equalized and flowing bottom-hole pressures, respectively. Prior to the development of the back-pressure tcst, the "open flow" capacity method of testing a well was common. By this method, the wells were flowed wide open to the air and the flow rate measured. Such procedure was wasteful of gas and did not provide information on the deliverability of the gas to the pipe line. Monograph 7 Procedure The back-pressure method of testing wells was developed to overcome these shortcomings. Although much has been learned regarding the laws of the flow of gas through porous formations, the original development of the back-pressure relationship was based entirely on empirical methods. The back-pressure behavior provides the engineer with information essential in predicting the future development of a field. It permits him to calculate the deliverability of gas into a pipe line at predetermined line pressures, to design and analyze gas gathering lines, to determine the spacing and number of wells to he drilled during the development of a field to meet gas purchasers' requirements, and to solve many other technical and economic problems. As described in Monograph 7, the flow-after-flow method of back-pressure testing, when applied to fast stabilizing and usually high capacity wells, correctly characterized the behavior of the well. However, as the value of the gas at the wellhead increased, small capacity gas wells having slow rates of stabilization became economically operable. The flow-after-flow method of testing could not be used to describe the behavior of these slowly stabilizing wells. The procedure of Rawlins and Shellhardtl for establishing the back-pressure behavior of a gas well was based on the rcquirement that the data be obtained under stabilized flow conditions; that is, that C is constant and does not vary with time. C depends on the physical properties of the reservoir, the location, extent and geometry of the drainage radius, and the properties of the flowing fluid. In a highly permeable formation, only a very short period of time is required for the well to reach a stabilized condition, and, consequently, the requirements for the test procedure described in Monograph 7 are met. In a series of papers, the authors and their associates have shown the influence of four important factors on the technical cohesion limit.3-l6 By "technical cohesion limitv is meant the technically determin-able resistance to fracture. The four importarlt factors are the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate, The influence of any one of these factors may be represented by a curve of cohesion limits, although only one point on the curve may represent actual fracture. As the term "fracture stress" has come into general use with the same significance as technical cohesion limit, the authors are here using the shorter term with the understanding that it does not always refer to actual fracture. The previously mentioned series of papers contains ample evidence that plastic extension increases the fracture stress of any polycrystalline metal, In a recent paper of the series,l5 moreover, it has been shown that the effect of plastic deformation on the fracture stress cannot be attributed to reorientation of internal flaws but is a work-strengthening effect, similar to the effect on the flow stress, $ Plastic deformation of steels, however, may not only cause work hardening, but may result in additional hardness because of strain aging. Some evidence that strain aging affects not only the flow stress but also the fracture stress, has been presented in a recent paper.14 In that paper, a study is made of the influence Of Plastic deformstion at room temperature on the fracture stress of ferritic steels at -188°C. The study is based on the results Of two-stage tests. In the first stage each specimen was extended a predetermined amount at room temperature; in the second stage the specimen was tested to fracture in liquid air. In most Of these tests the specimen remained in the testing machine during the interval of about one hour between the first and second stages, it was kept under a tensile load of about 500 lb and maintained at liquid air temperature. The effects of various amounts of .plastic deformation on the fracture stress were thus determined and curves were obtained to represent the influence of plastic deformation at room temperature on the stress at brittle fracture in liquid air.14 Two specimens Of ingot iron, however, were removed from the testing machine at the end of the first stage and several days elapsed before the specimens were tested to fracture in liquid air, As shown in Fig 8 of that paper," the points representing fracture of these specimens are far above the curve representing the results of two-stage tests without a rest interval between the stages. The four importarlt factors are the stress system, plastic deformation, temperature, and the strain rate, The influence of any one of these factors may be represented by a curve of cohesion limits, although only one point on the curve may represent actual fracture. As the term "fracture stress" has come into general use with the same significance as technical cohesion limit, the authors are here using the shorter term with the understanding that it does not always refer to actual fracture. The previously mentioned series of papers contains ample evidence that plastic extension increases the fracture stress of any polycrystalline metal, In a recent paper of the series,l5 moreover, it has been shown that the effect of plastic deformation on the fracture stress cannot be attributed to reorientation of internal flaws but is a work-strengthening effect, similar to the effect on the flow stress, $ Plastic deformation of steels, however, may not only cause work hardening, but may result in additional hardness because of strain aging. Some evidence that strain aging affects not only the flow stress but also the fracture stress, has been presented in a recent paper.14 In that paper, a study is made of the influence Of Plastic deformstion at room temperature on the fracture stress of ferritic steels at -188°C. The study is based on the results Of two-stage tests. In the first stage each specimen was extended a predetermined amount at room temperature; in the second stage the specimen was tested to fracture in liquid air. In most Of these tests the specimen remained in the testing machine during the interval of about one hour between the first and second stages, it was kept under a tensile load of about 500 lb and maintained at liquid air temperature. The effects of various amounts of .plastic deformation on the fracture stress were thus determined and curves were obtained to represent the influence of plastic deformation at room temperature on the stress at brittle fracture in liquid air.14 Two specimens Of ingot iron, however, were removed from the testing machine at the end of the first stage and several days elapsed before the specimens were tested to fracture in liquid air, As shown in Fig 8 of that paper," the points representing fracture of these specimens are far above the curve representing the results of two-stage tests without a rest interval between the stages. INTRODUCTION What is automation? Why automate? Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary defines automation as "the automatically controlled operation of an apparatus, process or system by mechanical or electronic devices that take the place of human organs of observation, effort, and decision." This definition gives an implied answer to the second question, )"Why automate?" Automation, automatic control devices and process control equipment receive their justification in supplementing or replacing manpower, which results in decreased operating costs. In the past, processes were operated with a minimum of instruments for the purpose of merely guiding the operators. Processes were manually controlled by the operator on the basis of simple temperature, pressure, flow and level indications on a panel. Today the tendency is to design a new plant to operate in a fully automatic manner according to a preset pro- gram utilizing a minimum of manpower. In addition to this direct cost reduction savings in manual labor, increased equipment capacity results from uniformity of flow and uniform control of process variables. This control eliminates or minimizes surges and permits equipment to be operated at or near its ultimate capacity and, for a given material through- put, permits the use of smaller process equipment. Automatic control, therefore, be it in the field of coal processing or in any industrial field, is simply a problem of economics. Control equipment is justified in terms of its contribution toward increasing productivity, increasing profit margins or producing a new and saleable product at a profit. Instruments and control devices can be divided into two general groups: (1) units which measure, and (2) units which both measure and control a process variable. In coal processing, the first class of instruments, those which measure only, include analytical devices such as automatic ash, moisture and sulfur measuring units and the simple pressure, temperature, flow and level indicating devices mentioned previously. The second group of instruments, those which both measure and control, include a wide variety of units such as continuous weighing devices on conveyor belts and photoelectric cells which gauge the position of railroad cars on the track and insure that the cars are in the proper location for loading (see Chapter 15). The latter types of units as used in the coal industry differ from those used in other industries in one significant point. In coal processing these instruments need not be as highly sophisticated and accurate as in other industries; hence their cost is proportionately lower than in other industries. ALFRED STANSFIELD, Montreal, Canada :-In Professor Howe's paper on the position of Ae3, he shows its industrial importance in determining the temperature to which steel should be heated. for "grain refining." Several years ago I carried out a research on the " burning " of steel and found that while hypo-eutectoid steel should be heated to Ae3, hyper-eutectoid steel that has been very much overheated must be reheated to the curve Sa on the carbon-iron diagram, in order to redissolve the pro-eutectoid cementite and thus, to obtain recrystallization and grain-refining. This treatment was necessarily only partly successful, and I should like to ask whether the conditions of heat treatment for refining overheated high-carbon steels have been ascertained. Speaking of the " Persistence of Solidificational Segregation " Professor Howe quotes an experiment made by Mr. Stead in which a bar of 1.2 per cent. carbon steel was immersed in a large mass of molten blast-furnace slag and allowed to cool with it. The steel was heated above the solidus (curve Aa on the carbon-iron diagram), but below the liquidus (curve AB). A drop of eutectic carbon-iron alloy, rich in carbon, had liquated out and hung below the bar. This agrees exactly with my own observations on the burning of steel, but my interpretation differs somewhat from that of Professor Howe. Professor Howe considers that the fusion of a part of the metal (rich in carbon) shows that the solidificational irregularities of composition had persisted through the rolling and heat treatment of the steel, as otherwise no part of the steel would have been sufficiently fusible to melt. It does not appear to me that such an explanation is necessary. A piece of steel represented in temperature and composition by any point within the area ABa will ultimately resolve itself into a solid phase and a liquid phase in equilibrium with each other. It may appear that if the steel were absolutely uniform no fusion could take place, but the smallest nucleus of high-carbon, fusible alloy would ultimately bring about this separation into liquid and solid phases, by diffusion of the carbon from the solid to the liquid areas. A nucleus sufficient for the purpose might be provided by an area of pro-eutectoid cementite which had not become diffused during the

This paper deals with an investigation of the use of steam filtration for filter cake dewatering and shows that it may be applied on a practical scale. The advent of larger quantities of minus 1/4 in. coal in the raw feed to the preparation plant and the necessity of recovering this material has made the problem of meeting product moisture specifications more difficult. For a number of years thermal dryers have been used advantageously as a means of reducing fine coal moisture content where the over-all economics would justify such an installation. However, these units are not without their drawbacks because of high capital and operating costs, safety hazards and possible degradation of the product, and thus an alternative method of moisture reduction is highly desirable. After the various mechanical variables associated with filtration have been optimized, an examination of theory shows that surface tension and liquid viscosity are the only two remaining variables which might be altered to reduce moisture content. A lowering of the surface tension within the limits of normal wetting agent dosage results in a rather insignificant decrease in cake moisture content. Not until the dosage is increased to a point well beyond this limit is there an appreciable decrease in moisture. At these high dosage levels, interfacial tension is a major factor contributing to the appreciable moisture reduction obtained. Since no suitable method has been developed to recover and recycle this wetting agent, this phenomena is not of practical significance. On the other hand, a reduction in liquid viscosity has a pronounced effect on cake moisture. While it is readily apparent that one method of reducing liquid viscosity is to heat the entire feed slurry, it is equally apparent that this would not be an economic approach except, perhaps, in certain isolated cases. It does, however, suggest that water circuits should be designed to conserve heat as much as possible and to make use of any waste heat that may be available. The use of hot air as a heat carrying medium for drying porous materials on a filter has been practiced for many years. However, this method is restricted to materials with a high air rate in the order of 100 cfm/ ft2 because of the low heat release per unit weight of air passing through the cake. The normal fine coal filter cake has an air porosity far too low to make this a practical approach. Various types of radiant heating devices have been investigated and can significantly lower moisture content at reasonable thermal efficiency. However,

This paper deals in a general way with certain of the necessary requirements of refractories for the open-hearth furnace. The refractories in common use for the different parts are discussed both as to the service they are giving and their suitability to withstand existing chemical, thermal and physical requirements. The relation between the service and allowable cost of a refractory is discussed and suggestions are requested on these points. The purpose of this paper is not to report, to the Institute, the results so far obtained in the survey, by the Bureau of Mines, of the metallurgical requirements for open-hearth refractories, but to present an outline that we hope will serve as a basis for discussion. The systematic survey that the Bureau proposes to make has not been outlined, although considerable preliminary work has been done in the way of interviewing open-hearth superintendents in several of the larger steel plants from the Chicago district eastward. At the several conferences so many of the opinions were diametrically opposite, when considering the same point, that it was thought that such an opportunity as the Institute offers in the way of a clearing house for moot metallurgical topics should not be overlooked. For this reason, the paper has been prepared as a basis for a discussion which, it is believed, will be of value in outlining the program of the Bureau. D. A. LYON, Assistant Director. THE importance of securing suitable refractories for metallurgical operations is daily becoming more universally recognized; particularly in the manufacture of open-hearth steel, where the life and earning power of the furnace depends largely on the judgment and care exercised in the selection of the correct quality of refractory for each of the parts. Any innovation that would make available to the steel manufacturers refractories with longer life or better suited to their needs than those now employed, and at a cost that would permit of their use, would be of enormous value to the industry at large. At the Buffalo meeting, October, 1888, Dr. Raymond presented a paper entitled: "Soaping Geysers" (p. 449 of the present volume), in which he called attention to the use of soap by tourists to cause eruptions of several of the well-known geysers in the Yellowstone Park. Incorporated in this paper appears a communication received from me, written from camp in the Park, in reply to some inquiries on the subject. The letter discussed somewhat briefly the means employed by visitors to the Park to hasten the eruptions from hot springs and reservoirs of hot water, which remain dormant for days, or even weeks or months, at a temperature near the boiling-point, without any display of geyser-action. As the paper has called forth considerable comment, I desire to elucidate one or two points in relation to the temperature of the springs, and to answer some inquiries about the composition of the thermal waters. In the summer of 1885, a Chinaman, employed as a laundryman for the accommodation of the tourists at the Upper Geyser Basin, accidently discovered, much to bis amazement, that soap thrown into the spring from which he was accustomed to draw his supply of water produced an eruption in every way similar to the actual workings of a geyser. Tourists with limited time at their command, who had travelled thousands of miles to look upon the wonders of the Yellowstone, soon fell into the way of coaxing the laundryman's spring into action, to partly compensate them for their sore disappointment in witnessing only the periodical eruptions of Old Faithful. Successful attempts upon this spring soon led to various endeavors to accelerate action in the dormant and more famous geysers. In a short time, so popular became the desire to stimulate geysers in this way, that the Park authorities were compelled to enforce rigidly the rule against throwing objects of any kind into the springs. In connection with a thorough investigation of the thermal waters of the Yellowstone Park and the phenomena of the geysers, I undertook a number of experiments to ascertain the action of soap upon the waters and to determine, if possible, those physical conditions of various pools and reservoirs which permitted the hastening of an
