NUMEROUS results and formulas have been published for analyzing seismic records, but most of them apply only to large-scale phenomena such as are encountered in studying earthquakes. In a few cases,1 formulas have been published for some of the simpler structures. In the present paper, an attempt will be made to analyze several types of struc-tures without using methods more advanced than those of a first course in calculus. In, tracing a disturbance through a medium, it is almost always possible to base the analysis on Fermat's Principle of Extreme Time, which states that waves of displacement travel between points in such a manner as to make the time of travel an extremum with respect to all neighboring paths. In the simpler cases, comprising most of those used in optics or geophysical prospecting, this time is a minimum and the principle is often referred to as the Principle of Least Time. Within a homogeneous medium, having a uniform speed of transmission of the disturbance in all directions and throughout the medium, the paths are straight and are refracted at the interfaces in accordance with the Snell law of refraction, which states that the ratio of the sine of the angle, made by the ray with the normal to the interface, to the speed of trans-mission is the same on both sides of the interface. Thus, in any medium composed of homogeneous sections, this same ratio has a constant value at all points. In particular, if all interfaces are horizontal, it is apparent that the angles of incidence are the angles made by the ray with the vertical direction. Furthermore, the incident ray, the refracted ray and the normal to the interface are all in the same plane at each refraction;

Every one connected with a mine knows that it is hard to keep down the costs of moving ore from the place where it is broken to the shaft or portal. Considered broadly, the subject of handling would cover all work done in a mine, but here it has been limited to handling ore in stopes and drifts, through chutes, and on levels. Good ventilation and a strict enforcement of rules for the prevention of dust safeguard the health of the men and lower transportation costs. Handling ORe in Stopes and Drifts The object of all stoping is to mine ore of good grade at low cost. In Butte, most of the ore is mined, from veins dipping from 60° to the horizontal to those which are vertical, by means of square-set, rill, timbered-rill, and back-filling stopes. When blasted, a part of the rock is carried by gravity to the grizzlies over the chutes, the rest is shoveled. Rock, when broken in a stope, may be deflected by inclined floors or slides toward the top of a chute leading to the level below. Ore broken clean enough to ship should be carried, by the force of its fall, into a chute or.as nearly into that chute as the safety of the stope and the men permits. Ore that requires sorting, about 80 per cent. of all ore mined, is caught on a grizzly and the waste picked out. Waste rock broken in a stope is used to fill that stope and should be blasted into the gob with as little handling as possible. About two-thirds of all the ore mined in Butte comes from square-set stopes; this method was used in nearly all cases until 1912, when the rill method of stoping was introduced in the Tramway mine, of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The shoveling and timbering costs in square-set stopes are high when compared with the costs in the rill stopes. All the ore cannot be carried to the chute, in falling from place, unless the chutes are very close together or the distance from the back of the stope to the top of the chute is sufficient to slide all the ore broken. THE method of presentation in the accompanying charts is based upon the well-known formula: production plus imports minus exports equals apparent consumption. Thus for each area for which data are shown there are two columns of equal height, one representing production plus imports, the other apparent consumption plus exports. Usually no account has been taken of increases or decreases in stocks. All columns and flow lines are drawn to a linear scale which is supplemented by figures showing the actual quantities represented. Owing to the small area occupied by the European countries on the world map it was impossible to show the details of the trade of the individual countries. All of Europe (except Russia), therefore, is shown as a single unit. However, statistics of production and consumption indicated elsewhere on the charts show the degree of self-sufficiency enjoyed by the major European powers.

IN making heating gas with anthracite coal for roasting ore during the past few years, I hare tried many forms of gas generators. So far, the most successful and satisfactory one has been what we call a fluxing producer, which is simply a small cupola or blast furnace, in which we charge with the coal, say, 30 or 40 per cent. of basic blast-furnace cinder, to unite, when melted, with the ash or earthy matter in the coal, and carry it off as cinder. The producer we have in use at Chester, N. J., has pore of the lines of a blast furnace than a cupola, the hearth being 24 inches diameter and 24 inches high. It then enlarges on an angle of about 25 degrees from a perpendicular to 4 feet, and then is drawn into 3 feet on top ; total height, 12 feet. We use one water coil-tuyere 12 inches above the bottom, and blow through a 11/2-inch nozzle. The depth of coal above the tuyere averages about 6 feet. The producer. is blown with

As a result of past developments, mainly at universities, the coal industry has had access for a decade or more to a number of computer programs for coal mine planning. Using some of these programs Bethlehem Steel's Research Department in 1969 launched jointly with Bethlehem Mines Corporation an extensive research and development program aimed at: (1) testing the capabilities of these programs through trial applications as the need and opportunity existed, (2) defining what additional capabilities were required to make mine planning computer systems fully useful in the hands of Bethlehem's mine-planning engineers in the field, and (3) developing and implementing in the field the mine-planning systems agreed on. This program is now nearing completion, and several of Bethlehem's operations routinely use the planning tools that were developed. The progress of this research program is discussed in terms of our initial trial applications of computer methods to mine planning and the incorporation of several innovative features into our new set of computer programs, in particular, the use of time sharing, data base management systems, and general-purpose simulation languages.

Wet dust suppression can be achieved by 1) confinement of the dust within the dust producing area with a curtain of moisture, 2) wetting of the dust by direct contact between the particles and droplets of moisture or 3) the formation of agglomerates too heavy to remain airborne, or too heavy to become airborne, by combining small dust particles with each other and with the droplets of liquid. From the standpoint of economy, availability and safety, water is the ideal fluid; however, it is not as effective for dust suppression as when small percentages of specially formulated dust control compounds are blended with it. Performance of dust control com pounds is related to surface active agents and surface activity. In all liquids there is an attractive force between molecules which varies inversely as the sixth power of the distance between molecules. Thus, in the liquid phase where molecules are crowded together, the intermolecular forces are powerful; whereas in the liquid-vapor phase where the molecules are relatively far apart, these forces diminish rapidly. In the body of a fluid there is an uneven distribution of forces resulting in an inward pull called surface tension. The force which keeps two surfaces apart or causes them to coalesce is termed interfacial tension. Fluids of high surface tension exhibit poor wetting, spreading and penetrating qualities. Water has the unusually high surface tension of 72.75 dynes per cm at 20°C.

In spite of the apparent usefulness of autoradiography in demonstrating segregation, it has had very limited success in demonstrating grain boundary segregation. Because of this limited success, a model system amenable to mathematical analysis was devised to determine which variables in the experiment are most important. As a result of these calculations, it was concluded that autoradiograPhy is a rather insensitive technique to measure grain boundary segregation. The range (energies) of the emitted particles (ß and a) must be low, and the concentration of the radioactive speczes at the grain boundary must be (in general) two or three orders of magnitude greater than the concentration within the grain. Because of these very restricted conditions , the limited success of the technzque is not surprising. In spite of the apparent usefulness of autoradiography in demonstrating segregation, it has had very limited success in demonstrating grain boundary segregation. Sulfur segregation in iron1 and possibly polonium segregation in Pb-5 pct B1 2 alloys are the only autoradi-ography experiments that have demonstrated segregation to grain boundaries in metals without the formation of a second phase. Segregation to a boundary without the formation of a second phase is often called Gibbs' absorption and is discussed by McLean in Chapter 5 of Ref. 10. There are several394 experiments showing grain boundary diffusion of a radioisotope, but this type experiment is not representative of equilibrium between the concentration of an element at a grain boundary and that in bulk, so it will not be discussed in this paper. In an attempt to determine if temper embrittle ment of low-alloy steels was associated with segregation of antimony to grain boundaries, a program to use auto-radiography (using Sb-125) was initiated. Even though other measurements strongly suggest that segregation is occurring during embrittlement, no evidence of grain boundary segregation was observed in the auto-radiography experiments. An attempt was also made to detect segregation of carbon (using C-14) to grain boundaries in iron during slow cooling. There is again strong indirect evidence7 that segregation occurs during such a treatment, but the autoradiography experiment gave no evidence of such segregation. Because of the failure of these experiments and the general lack of success by our metallographic unit in measuring grain boundary segregation using autoradi-ography, a model system amenable to mathematical analysis was devised to determine which variables in the experiment are most important. MODEL SYSTEM The model system is illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. It is a semi-infinite bicrystal with a single grain boundary perpendicular to the top face. The width of the grain boundary, W, is defined as the region to which segregation has occurred and it is assumed that this region is of constant composition. The assumption of an infinite dimension is for mathematical reasons but the results of such an analysis (as will be demonstrated later) are valid for even very small specimens. It also is assumed that the measurement is not limited by means of detecting the radiation (photographic emulsions, counters, and so forth) but that the means of detecting radiation is linearly sensitive to the radiation and has infinite resolving power. The distance y is the perpendicular distance from the center of the grain boundary to the point at which the background radiation is measured and x is the integration variable. CALCULATION FOR BETA PARTICLES Two values of the intensity of radiation will be calculated, the intensity at the center of the grain boundary and the intensity far from the grain boundary. The radiation at the center of the grain boundary can be calculated in the following way. Assume a grain boundary of width W having a uniform concentration equal to Cgb + Cb where CGb is the excess concentration of the element under consideration at the grain boundary and Cb is the bulk concentration. The intensity of radiation, IgB, at the center of the grain boundary, is a consequence of the amount of radioactive material, decay rate, absorption, and geometrical factors which can be represented mathematically by the following expression:

IN recent papers, O'Neill,1 Vivian,2 and Zener and Hollomon3 have reviewed some of the information concerning the relations between stress and strain during plastic deformation. Since further information has been obtained since these reviews were published, this paper attempts to further coordinate and amplify the knowledge concerning the plastic deformation of metals in simple tension. Ordinarily the results of tensile tests of metals are presented as graphs in which the load divided by the original area is plotted as a function of the percentage of elongation measured over some specified gauge length. The interpretation of graphs of this sort is limited, since the stress required to deform the metal at any stage of the deformation is actually the load divided by the instantaneous rather than the original area. Furthermore, each increment of the deformation is performed on metal that has been previously deformed, and, as pointed out by Ludwik,4 the strain could be more effectively defined: [e = In A t][I] where a is the strain and Ao and A are, respectively, the original and instantaneous areas. The results of the tensile tests can be more effectively presented and interpreted if the stress* (load divided by actual area) is plotted as a function of the strain as defined above. A schematic curve of this type is presented as Fig. I. In a previous paper,6 the concept of Ludwik7 concerning the flow and fracture of metals was successfully employed to explain some of the puzzling results of notched-bar impact tests of steel. It appears that the use of this concept is very fruitful and should be kept in mind in any study of the deformation characteristics of metals. Ludwik considered that a flow stress-strain curve of a metal was essentially a locus of points that described the stress required for plastic flow of an infinite number of specimens, each with a different strain history determined by the preceding part of the flow curve. Each of these specimens can also be considered to have a fracture strength. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending upon the point of view), all the specimens, except the one deformed to the fracture strain, flow and do not fracture. The system Nh-Ir was investigated over the complete concentration range by metallography and X-my techniques, using forty one alloys. The solubility limits of terminal and intermediate phases and the solidus temperatures were determined. Five intermediate phases were found: a Nb3Ir, cubic, Cr3O type; tetragonal, ofecr thorhomhic, isostruc-turn1 with (ta-Rh); and a Nhlr3. cubic, AuCu, type. a Nb3lr and a Nbfr3 melt congruently; three eutectic and three pentectic reactions occur. The phase diagram of the Nb-Ir system had not been fully treated in the literature; only surveys of intermediate phases were found.1"5 In this study, the details of the phase boundaries were investigated as well as the crystallography of the intermediate phases. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The experimental procedures such as arc melting of powder compacts, heat treatments, solidus measurements, X-ray, and metallographic observation were identical with those used in the work on the Nb-Rh phase diagram.&apos; They will therefore not be repeated here except where the conditions differed. The purity of the niobium powder was as stated in Ref. 6; the iridium powder of 99.9+ pct purity from J. Bishop and Co., Malvern, Penn., did not contain impurities exceeding 100 ppm, except rhodium (200 ppm). The melting points and vapor pressures of both elements are very similar. This fact contributed to a very small weight loss on melting and facilitated preparation of homogeneous alloys. As shown in Ref. 6 for Nb-Rh, no oxygen pick-up exceeding 200 ppm had to be considered; this was regarded as valid also for Nb-Ir. A total of forty one alloys were used in the determination of the phase diagram; their concentrations are shown in Fig. l, which presents the phase diagram. The concentration limits as determined by the weight-loss method averaged <0.2 at. pct, and never exceeded 0.5 at. pct. Heat treatments were carried out as described in Ref. 6. Depending on the concentration, only tantalum, tungsten, or iridium containers were employed, avoiding oxide crucibles altogether. Alloys from 0 to 25 and from 65 to 100 at. pct Ir were homogenized at 2095°C for 15 hr, intermediate compositions from 25 to 65 at. pct Ir for 65 hr at 1780°C. A typical annealing-time schedule is presented in Table I. Solidus points were measured as described in Ref. 6 with the modification that samples rich in niobium were held between pieces of tantalum foil and samples of high iridium concentrations were held between rhenium platelets or in iridium wire. After each run it was ascertained metallographically that no reaction with the holder had occurred. Rhenium was selected as holder material after it had been shown in separate tests that the melting points of Re-Ir alloys rise continuously from 2440°C. Metallographic examination was carried out as described in Ref. 6, and the same procedure and etchants were used successfully. While metallographic discrimination between a Nb3lr and o was easily possible, X-ray diffraction was necessary to separate al and ct2. X-ray powder patterns were taken and evaluated as for Nb-Rh6 yielding the error limits indicated in Table 111, to be introduced later. For the determination of the invariant reactions and phase boundaries, the same techniques as for Nb-Rh6 applied. The general accuracy of invariant concentrations is regarded as somewhat higher than for Nb-Rh due to the small slope of most solvus lines.

An analytical method is presented which enables the electron diffraction patterns from a twinned region to be indexed. The method has only been applied to (112) twins in bcc lattices, but can easily be adapted to other types of twinned lattices. Calculations of all twin spots, including those superimposed on matrix spots, is made possible by this method. SINCE the advent of transmission electron microscopy, the analysis of selected-area electron diffraction patterns has become very important in the interpretation of electron micrographs. Frequently, as in the case of some martensites, twinned areas are observed and give rise to complex diffraction patterns, which so far can be analyzed only for the simplest orientations of the thin foil specimen with respect to the electron beam. In order to simplify the analysis of twin patterns of more complex orientations, an analytical method was devised which is capable of predicting the positions of all reflections from both matrix and twin regions for all possible foil orientations. Although the method has only been applied to the case of bcc metals twinned about a (112) plane, it is equally applicable to other Bravais lattices. This method has been successfully applied to selected-area electron diffraction patterns of Fe-Ni and Fe-Ni-C martensites and drawn tungsten wire. PROCEDURE Imagine the reciprocal lattice corresponding to a bcc material, with each point hkl representing the crystallographic plane (hkl). Since the extinction conditions require that for this lattice, only reflections where h + k + 1 = even integer are allowed, the three dimensional reciprocal lattice is actually fcc. Since in real space twinned regions and matrix regions are mirrored across a (112) plane, the twinned reciprocal lattice is derived from the matrix reciprocal lattice by a rotation of 180 deg about a (112) direction. While it is possible to calculate how a point hkl will shift under a twinning transformation to a new point htktlt using only the reciprocal lattice based on the orthonormal vectors [100], [010], and [001], the calculations are greatly simplified if a new orthonormal coordinate system containing the twin axis is introduced. The twinning operation then becomes a simple rotation of 180 deg about a principal coordinate axis (in this case the twinning axis), and a retransformation back to the original reciprocal space will give the position htktIt of the twinned reflection.

The literature concerning the remelting of alunlinum and its alloys is very rich. Unfortunately the majority of the papers on this subject have no scientific value, for the theories or explanations are too often in opposition to the laws of physical chemistry. Furthermore only a few of the methods of purification are considered in the literature. Hence it has seemed necessary to the author to sketch a general theory of the purification of secondary aluminum. The purpose of the purification is to eliminate the impurities that the charges, and the atmosphere of the furnaces bring into the bath during the successive remelt-ings. Indeed scrap as well as metal can be used when soiled with oil, greases, water, or others, if it has been sufficiently dried and contains oxides. At the melting point of the metal, the oils and greases are decomposed into their constituent elements H², O2, H²O, co², CO, CH,, and others. These gases are added to the corresponding gases in the atmosphere of the furnace. The impurities introduced into the metal during the remelting will accordingly be the products resulting from the action of these gases on the liquid bath. The quantity of hydrogen that is soluble in aluminum and its alloys is given by the relation of sieverts3 as a function of its partial pressure PH2 in the atmosphere m = K vPH² [I] where K is a constant, which depends only upon the temperature and increases with it. The experiments of Rijntgen and Braun4, RÖntgen and M611er5, Bircum-shaw6 and Winterhagerl have rendered it possible to determine the value of K, when the temperature is less than 1.000°C. One obtains: log K = - 4,702.5T + o 238 [2] Besides its usual significance, the term Ph~ represents also the internal pressure of dissolved hydrogen, since in the equilibrium, that is1 when no gas exchange Occurs between the two phases, the Pressures of hydrogen in the metal and in the atmosphere must be equal. Eq I shows that when the partial pressure of H2 increases the amount of dissolved hydrogen in equilibrium increases, and that, if the contrary Occurs, the quantity of H² should diminish. However, if for any reason the diffusion of hydrogen is hindered and the total amount of dissolved gas remains constant while the temperature decreases, the internal pressure of H² increases until it reaches the value of the hydrostatic pressure. At this point, bubbles of hydrogen appear in the bath and escape out of it. The amount of hydrogen in the metal is then limited by a a depending On the hydro- static pressure, which is practically equal to one atmosphere. Indeed hydrogen does not accumulate in the form of a hydride appearing as a separate solid phase. However1 even the mechanism of the solubility is not yet elucidated. AS part of a program to investigate the diffusive properties of dilute ternary austenites, we have made a determination of the effects of cobalt on the activity of carbon in y iron. Samples of pure iron and Fe-Co alloys were equilibrated at 1000°C in controlled CO-C02 atmospheres, following the procedure of R. P. smith.&apos; The 0.010-in.-thick samples were analyzed for carbon by microcombustion analysis2 to give a set of isoactivity curves. The latter were converted to activity-coefficient (standard state at infinite dilution) plots by combination with Smith&apos;s data&apos; for the activity of carbon in pure iron measured in a CO-C02 mixture. Table I shows the composition of the base alloys used, while Fig. 1 shows the experimental results superimposed on a set of curves generated by the relation In the notation of Wagner,&apos; the interaction parameter is the second coefficient on the right, Eq. [I] adequately correlates the experimental points for those alloys which were prepared from electrolytic iron by arc-melting (2,4, and 7 pct Co). The results for the 10 pct Co alloy (supplied by Crucible Steel Co.) do not correlate with the others. In fact, the experimental points for this alloy correspond to an interaction parameter of It is possible that the interaction parameter is a function of concentration for large cobalt additions, but we are inclined to attribute the discrepancy to the presence of a significant amount of aluminum added to this alloy for deoxidation purposes (Table I). Preliminary measurements for the system Fe-C-A1 have indicated an interaction parameter of Which implies that the effect of aluminum in solution on the carbon activity is sixty times greater than the effect of an equal weight percentage of cobalt. These observations cast some doubt on the precision of the results of Chandhok, Hirth, and Dulis who used this same 10 pct alloy for their experiments, obtaining an interaction parameter of E = 2.2. There is considerable doubt as to the activity of a plane Fe-C system. Using a CH4-Ha mixture, Smith obtains cg = 6.1 for the effect of carbon on the activity of carbon in austenite, rather than the value of 8.9 given in Eq. [I]. The use of CHa-Ha mixtures has recently been questioned by Kaufman, Radcliff, and cohens who state that there is some possibility that other hydrocarbons are formed. Fortunately, the determination of the interaction parameter is not sensitive to the coefficient of Nc. For example, using the CHI-H2 results we obtain a value which is almost the same as that obtained using the CO-CO, results. The authors wish to thank Mr. E. J. A simple correlation is presented for the prediction of saturation pressures in condensate-gas and volatile-oil mixtures. Saturation pressure is related directly to the composition of the mixture with the aid of two generalized composition characteristics, B, the molal average boiling point, and W, the modified weight average equivalent molecular weight. The need for hydrocarbon equilibrium constants is entirely eliminated. Only the values of the two conlposition parameters need be obtained, and these are calculated in a simple and reproducible manner from the stream analysis of the mixture and the ASTM distillation for the heavy ends. The correlation is given .in the form of a set of 14 working charts in which saturation pressures, either retrograde dew points or bubble points, are plotted cs temperature, forming partial phase envelopes for mixtures having discrete values of the composition parameters, B and Wul. A locus of critical states on each chart intersects the partial phase envelopes, distinguishing retrograde dew point pressures from bubble pressures. A comparison Between experimental and predicted saturation pressures reveals that: the probable error of the predicted values, when considering the data as a whole (214 experimental points), is five per cent; for high gasjoil ratio condensate fluids (approximately 40.000 or more cu ft/bbl) the probable error is about 8 per cent. In either case, however, the probable error is comparable with the overall uncertainty of the data from which the correlation is derived. INTRODUCTION There is a present need for a simplified, yet reasonably accurate method for predicting upper phase boundaries of reservoir fluids. In the case of high gas/oil ratio fluids, namely the so-called highly volatile oils and the condensate gases, no simple method, accurate within 5 to 10 per cent, is now available by which bubble point and retrograde dew point pressures may be predicted. In order to calculate the upper phase boundary of a volatile reservoir fluid, using correlations now available, it is necessary to find and employ the proper K-values (equilibrium volatility ratios of the hydrocarbons in that fluid). This process of finding the Proper K-values usually involves a double trial and error computation. Since the K-values are in themselves dependent upon the composition of the fluid, their use in the calculation of a saturation pressure actually represents an unnecessary complication. The correlation described in this paper relates saturation pressure directly to the stream composition, entirely eliminating the need for K-values. The only data required to calculate the Stream composition are obtained from the customary low temperature fractional analyses of separator gas and liquidt and from the ASTM distillation of the c,+ fraction of the separator liquid. A considerable simplification in the procedure for predicting saturation pressures is thereby effected without significant loss in accuracy. BASIS FOR A CORRELATION Empirical relationships between the saturation pressure and the composition of the fluid in question have already been partially explored by one of the authors.V n particular, a relationship between the critical pressure for a hydrocarbon mixture and its composition was developed. The critical pressure is in reality a saturation pressure, as it repregents a limiting case either of a dew point or of a buhhle point pressure for any given mixture. It was found that the critical pressure may be correlated as a function of two generalized composition characteristics or variables. IT is a pleasure to realize even at that day the dignity of the engineer&apos;s calling was upheld. May I also add my firm belief that today there be many engineers who will qualify to the specifications of our interesting author. Since that time, the development of the world has been chiefly due to the engineer, and so far as human brain can foresee, the material tasks of the future will continue to follow the directions of his judgment. Popular opinion says this is the age of the engineer; literature, which in the long run, voices public sentiment, shows it in the number of engineers who figure as characters of fiction. The engineer has been doing the big things necessary to increase the comfort and efficiency of mankind, but while a certain amount of fame and repute falls to him, too often he figures as the hired man of the entrepreneur, using that term not in the offensive sense of a mere promoter, but to mean the great visioned master of enterprise who has seen ahead of other men, recognized the coming needs of the world, and through ability to inspire others and to hire capital for his use has also been able to hire engineers as needed. Justly enough, therefore, to such men comes the fame as well as the prize of the game.

THE farmer pays the phosphate miner! Phosphorus is used in fireworks; goes to battle in military smoke screens, incendiary shells, and tracer bullets; and, in vermin destroying pastes, does its part in the war against insects. A lemon phosphate can be had for a nickel at most soda fountains, and tens of thousands of tons of phosphate rock are mined annually for use in the food industries, chiefly for making monocaleium phosphate baking powder. Sodium phosphate cleaning, washing, and scouring compounds consume substantial quantities: the iron and steel industries buy a few thousand tons yearly to make ferrophosphorus and to balance foundry-iron furnace charges; and even nonferrous metallurgists use a little for phosphor bronze and other alloys. Phosphoric acid, its salts, and diverse other derivatives of this versatile element have countless applications, and industrial outlets are increasing rapidly, especially in the United States. Nevertheless, in this country nearly 90 per cent and in the whole world fully 95 per cent of the phosphate rock consumed is absorbed ultimately in agriculture.

IN the early stages of design it was not considered necessary that separate crushing plants be built for the new sulphide concentrator and smelter until sometime in the future. The plan was to use the existing crushing facilities for both oxide and sulphide ore. A few additions were contemplated for the existing plants, such as increased bin capacity, and possibly two new secondary crushing units. The more the problem was studied and discussed with the plant operators, the more it became evident that it was complex. It involved the classification of different kinds of ore from the open pit mine -sulphide, oxide and mixed-and how best to separate them so that each kind of ore was given the proper processing and treatment. It also involved the problem of keeping the different ores from being contaminated in bins, hoppers and chutes. Added to these, transportation became complicated and would involve additional handling and loading of ore from crushing plants to conveyors, to bins, and finally to railroad cars which were to be hauled to the concentrator and dumped into the fine ore bin. General In the early part of 1951 it was decided that the concentrator be constructed with ten grinding units instead of seven as originally authorized. The smelter was to be increased proportionally and naturally also the overall tonnages of ore to be handled by the new sulphide plant. Due to this increase in plant capacity and the larger tonnages involved, the difficulties which would arise by using the existing crushing plants were increased to a point where it became evident that the building of new crushing plants for sulphide ore exclusively was technically, as well as economically, advantageous. Authorization was, therefore, given by the company to construct new crushing plants to handle 30,000 tons of ore per day, and capable of reducing the run-of-open-pit ore to the proper size feed for the 10x14-ft rod mills in the concentrator. The ore, mined in the open pit, sometimes comes in pieces as large as 6 to 7 ft diam. The rod mills may call for ore crushed to 3/4 in. The large .size of ore delivered from the open pit determined that a 60-in. gyratory crusher be used as primary breaker. Such a crusher will have a capacity considerably in excess of 30,000 tons per day. The crusher will be a single discharge unit driven by a 500-hp electric motor through a tear coupling and a floating shaft. This type of drive has proven successful at a number of other crusher installations which our company has operating in the United States, Mexico and South America. The tear coupling will protect both the crusher and motor against damage in case of overload. No new features are incorporated in the design of the crusher itself, except that the, discharge chute is made the full width of the crusher with parallel sides instead of the usual converging sides. This change in detail should eliminate, a feature which has been a bottleneck in some of the operating plants and has caused loss of production due to ore hanging up and blocking the chute. The secondary crushing plants will have three 7-ft standard Symons cone crushers and six 7-ft short head Symons crushers. Between the primary and secondary crushing plants a coarse ore bin will be constructed with a nominal draw-off capacity of 30,000 tons of ore. The standard Symons and the short head Symons will be in separate buildings. All the crushing plants and the coarse ore bin are interconnected with conveyor belts for transporting the ore to the crushers at the tonnage rate desired. The final product of the new crushing plants is produced by the short head crushers. It will be delivered onto a conveyor belt leading to the top of the fines ore bin in the concentrator. A separate conveyor belt running the full length of the fines ore bin and provided with a movable tripper of rugged design will discharge the sulphide ore into the bin. The concentrator bin is planned and designed so that the installation of this additional conveyor will not interfere with the operation of the two railroad tracks on which crushed ore is brought from the existing oxide plant. Thus when completed the bin can be filled simultaneously by ore from the new crushing plant and by ore from the existing leaching plant.

Studies of wellbore heat transtnission during the injection of a hot fluid, as either gas or liquid, have appeared in he literature. The present investigation takes into account the effect of condensation, which is of practical sig-nificance when considering steam injection operations. Calculation procedures are given for superheated and for saturated and undersaturated steam. Effects of injection rate, time, pressure, temperature and depth of a well on heat losses have been analyzed. The benefits of using a packer are discussed. Also presented are correlations for estimating heat losses involved during injection of saturated steam. INTRODUCTION Studies of wellbore heat losses during the injection of a hot fluid have appeared in the literature. Ramey&apos; has presented a useful solution for calculating temperature of a heated gas as a function of depth and injection time. Ramey and others have also presented solutions for the hot liquid case.&apos;. &apos; No method is available to take into account the effect of condensation, which is of practical significance when considering steam injection operations. This paper presents a method of estimating the quality of a condensing fluid as a function of depth and time. The approach is basically the same as that used by Ramey. The following injected fluids and conditions are considered in this study: 1. Injection of superheated steam A. Decrease in temperature until cooled to the saturated state B. Condensation until condensed completely into hot (saturated) water 2. Injection of saturated or undersaturated steam; condensation until condensed completely into hot (saturated) water. Although this investigation does not include cooling of water after steam is completely condensed, Ramey&apos;s solution for the hot liquid case can be used for this purpose. The effects of various process variables on heat losses During the injection of steam into a well are investigated. THEORY QUALITY OF CONDENSING STEAM Predicting the behavior of condensing steam flowing down the injection wellbore requires an estimate of the quality of steam, i.e., the mass fraction of vapor in the mixture. Let us divide the total depth of the injection well into several segments which might be, but do not have to be, of equal magnitude. Consider condensation within a given depth interval AZ, the bottom of which is located at a depth Z from the surface (Fig 1). The following equation, derived in the Appendix- relates the quality of steam at the bottom of an interval to that at the top of the interval:
