Modern mill design is a combination of many factors which permit the efficient production of a mineral concentrate from operating, maintenance, and capital requirements. In general, mills should be designed to use the largest possible equipment compatible with the requirements of the ore and the owner's operating philosophy. The paper discusses the major parts of concentrating mills, from primary crushing through comminution, both conventional and autogenous, and the production of a final concentrate. Features of various plants are compared and discussed in the light of operating practice and maintenance requirements.

Gold is generally recovered from silver anode slime by electrolysis in the final step of the copper anode slime treatment. In the present investigation, rapid and direct hydrometallurgical separation and recovery of gold in the early step of the process is studied. Gold is recovered just after the elimination of copper and selenium from copper anode slime. The studied process consists of: (a) oxidizing roasting for selenium elimination, (b) sulfuric acid leaching of the calcine for copper removal, reduction of gold in the liquor by the use of proper reductant such as hydrogen peroxide (production of gold powder), (el nitric acid treatment of gold powder for further purification and (f) melting and casting of gold. Laboratory and miniplant testwork showed that the extraction ratio of gold by chlorine leaching was 99 % up and four nine gold ingot could be recovered without electrolyses.

THE property of Eureka Corp. Ltd. is located in the approximate geographic center of Nevada, 2 miles from Eureka, the county seat. The great sources of power, the Colorado, Snake, and Salmon Rivers and the rivers of northern California, are 300 to 500 miles distant, and no lines serve areas closer than 150 miles. Fuel for diesel and steam generation is available in Utah, 300 to 400 miles to the east. Eureka's railhead is 80 miles north where two trunk lines cross the county. A spur line serves Ely, 77 miles east. Good highways connect Eureka to the railheads.

A plan is prepared to develop and operate a four mine complex over a 30-year period. The mining complex is in the vicinity of two existing processing plants and the most economical means of transporting the raw minerals to either or both of these processing plants is sought. The mines and processing plants are all within a radius of 5.6 km (3.5 miles). Existing transportation facilities consist of county and state roads and federal highways as well as haul roads in some areas. A navigable river meanders through the area under study and there are two railroad systems servicing the area. The analysis shows the economic and operational feasibility of using an overland conveyor in lieu of other means of transportation.

The new Track Etch technique for uranium exploration has been utilized in several survey programs conducted during the last few years. The results from these programs have been very encouraging, and new uranium ore bodies have been discovered by using this new technique. The method is being used in several exploration programs in various locations around the world. This exploration technique utilizes small pieces of special radiation-sensitive plastic film to detect the presence of radon gas which is released by uranium ore bodies. Because of the selectivity and sensitivity of the technique, ore bodies not normally detected with other surface or airborne monitoring methods are found. Since no large equipment or special training of personnel is needed, the technique is easily used in field operations. The basis for the Track Etch method, its application in field exploration programs, and the results obtained to date in locating uranium ore bodies are discussed.

THIS method of melting with a little wind furnace is called by many melting with air. It is a method that is done with little labor. First a furnace is made with crucibles and charcoal. It is small or large as you wish, without blast from bellows, but not without a draft of air which proceeds from the place where it is made and from the arrangement of the furnace.* This, after a certain period of time, has the effect of melt- [ ] gin the thing in the quantity that you wish, provided, however, that you proportion it properly to the space, to the fire, and to the air which makes the wind. In order to make this, the aforesaid furnace is first made of bricks, or it is dug out of an elevation of stone or [106V] in a wall of clay. It can also be made portable with iron bars and loam as I shall tell you. However you may make it, you must place it in a spot that is windy, for instance, in some large room or opposite doors or windows. It is made round or square as is most pleasing to him who is to make it. But here we will now say that it is to be made square for greater convenience of building with bricks. THE work herein reported shows that galena in certain organic solutions of fatty acids becomes coated with lead soaps, and that this coating is not only highly water-repellent but is also repellent to certain organic liquids, particularly those [ ] of high surface tension; i.e., nitrobenzene, diphenylmethane. WETTING PROPERTIES OF GALENA IN NONAQUEOUS FATTY ACID SOLUTIONS When a "captive bubble"' is withdrawn from a polished, plane galena surface under a nitrobenzene solution of stearic acid, the air bubble shows a decided tendency to "cling" to the mineral surface. The contact angle, therefore, was greater than zero, although it was not large enough to be measured quantitatively by the captive-bubble method.* [ ] When pure nitrobenzene was substituted for the nitrobenzene-stearic acid solution, no clinging of the bubble was observed; viz., contact angle = zero. Although the contact angle developed in air-galena-nitrobenzene-fatty acid solution was small, the organic solvent repellency of the galena surface was great enough to enable good recovery in a laboratory flotation cell.2 In Table I are given the results of flotation experiments using several different fatty acids dissolved in nitrobenzene.

THE program for the 126th meeting of the Institute, to be held in San Francisco Sept. 25 to 29, 1922, is being prepared by the General Arrangements Committee of the Local Section and its details are not yet ready for announcement. The program, however, has developed to a sufficient extent to permit members to decide whether they wish to attend or not. Briefly stated, Monday, Sept. 25, will be devoted to technical sessions which will be held at the Engineers Club, and there will be as many sessions as may be required to present the papers available, some of which are listed below. Under the registration fee plan (see July magazine) entertainment expenses during the week in San Fran-cisco will be borne by those in attendance, not by local members alone. Of all the developments in the post-war history of Western Europe, none has been more remarkable in its aims and in the progress it has achieved than the movement toward European integration. It is not an exaggeration to say that this movement marks a virtual revolution, an about-face, in the long and complicated history of European states over the past three centuries. Although sporadic efforts to achieve European integration can be traced back for at least a 100 years, it remained for the breakdown of the European economies as a result of World War II and the subsequent Russian threat to give new impetus to the concept of broader economic and political integration. In fact, the economic integration of Europe following the end of the war was considered so essential that, in 1949, the administrator of the European Cooperation Administration, Paul Hoffman, spoke of the economic integration of Western Europe as an objective of American policy embodied in the Marshall Plan.

The use of pH control in solvent extraction circuits to aid in metal separation, concentration, and purification is an extremely useful technique applicable to a wide range of solutions. This paper discusses the technique in general and then gives examples of its use in extraction stages, wash and/or scrub stages, and in stripping stages, to effect the desired metal separation, concentration, and purification. Specific examples cited include Cu-Ni, Cu-Zn, and U-Mo separations using commercially available liquid ion exchange reagents.

Sidbec-Normines operates six large iron ore concentrate regrinding mills in parallel and open circuit at its Port-Cartier pelletizing plant. Grinding kinetics in these mills were characterized for slurry densities varying between 70 and 89% solids, using a lumped parameter size discrete model. Optimum grinding conditions were encountered at 83.5 to 84% solids. Higher densities decreased the normalized selection function and increased slurry short-circuiting, yielding a sharply coarser mill discharge. At lower slurry densities, the normalized selection function decreased and the mill discharge coarsened slightly. The grinding kinetic model predicted particle size distributions within the mill. These were found to vary significantly from the feed to the discharge end. This is likely to cause nonlinear breakage kinetics.

There are no formulas that guarantee success when obtaining zoning approval for mineral aggregate mining. Local land use decisions often represent the most controversial issues faced by a community. Public awareness, concern, willingness to get involved, sensitivity to the environment and, probably most important, fear of change only begin to describe the atmosphere in which local land use decisions are made. The public hearing process is quasi judicial, adversarial, and unfortunately, not designed for resolution of disputes. It is not difficult to see the need for an alternative to present methods. Hopefully, some day there will be a process that will do away with or at least minimize unnecessary, unproductive, and unmanageable community conflicts.

Dust or fume control systems are devices for capturing contaminants at their source and preventing their discharge to atmosphere. The Primary Components Of Any Dust Control System Include: An enclosure around any potential dust source such as conveyor belt transfer, crusher, screening machine, bin loading and loadout. Ductwork including hood takeoffs (transitions) to convey the collected dust laden air away from the source of dust generation to a convenient location. A dust collector for separation of particulate matter from the air stream prior to its discharge to the atmosphere. A prime mover generally a fan, to draw air into an enclosure and to overcome resistance to flow in the ductwork, dust collector and stack.
