THE McIntyre mine is in the Pearl Lake section of the Porcupine gold area. The rocks are Keewatin lavas intruded by quartz porphyries and albitite dikes of Algoman age. Gold-bearing quartz veins are found in the Keewatin rocks near the porphyry stocks. The whole area has been highly compressed by forces acting along a N. 20°W. line. These forces folded the Keewatin rocks before the intrusion of the Algoman rocks, and later schisted both the Keewatin and Algoman rocks. Vein fractures were developed after the folding but before the development of the schist by the compressive forces being locally broken up into couples. These couples were set up by the differential resistance to deformation of porphyries and basalts, and also by the competency of the dacites and incompetency of the tuffs and fragmental rocks. During the important period of vein formation, two zones were developed-an inner productive zone in which the quartz veins are ankerite-bearing and an outer barren zone in which the quartz veins are calcite-bearing. The vein solutions originated in the same magrna that supplied the albitit,e dikes.

With the imperfect knowledge that me have of the geology .of the country in general, and of the numerous mining districts in particular, it is impossible to present an accurate idea of the geographical and geological distribution of the mineral deposits of the Mexican Republic. But, notwithstanding this, it is elear that the deposits are concentrated in limited regions of the country, and that certain deposits are so closely associated as to indicate, beyond doubt, a genetic relationship. SILVER the whitest of all metals, has been used for thousands of years. Students of antiquity agree that silver, gold, copper, and their alloys were the first metals discovered by man and they have all played an important part throughout the advance of civilization. Native silver has been found in different parts of the world in varying form and size, such as clusters of fine wires in rock cavities, thin sheets along cleavage planes in veins of rocks, and pieces of irregular shape that vary in size from extremely small particles to masses weighing many pounds. Nearly pure silver is found in, the native state but the native metal is more likely to contain copper or gold. Some of the natural alloys closely approximate the compositions of synthetic alloys that are used in the arts at the present time. As these native silver alloys usually are malleable and ductile, it is evident that prehistoric man was provided by nature with metals that he could work, with the crude tools at his command, into simple ornaments or other articles. The relative scarcity of silver combined with its resistance to attack under ordinary atmospheric conditions have been important factors in determining the purposes for which man has used it. Its scarcity and indestructible character have made its possession particularly desirable, and from the earliest times its principal use has been as a measure of wealth and a medium of exchange. The comparatively high value of silver in relation to other commodities makes it possible to transport a large amount of wealth in small bulk, and silver has traveled back and forth over all parts of the world. Several attempts have been made in the past 60 years to commercialize the vast oil shale deposits of the US. However, the industry has yet to become economically viable. To date, it has not been possible to produce oil from oil shales at a competitive price compared with oil produced by conventional methods. The development work, nevertheless, has been fruitful in furthering the art of thick bed mining and technology of in situ retorting. The in situ method has the potential of recovering oil from thick beds, and the resource recovery potential is much greater than that from underground mining and surface retorting. In situ methods require that the shales/marlstones be fragmented in place to induce adequate porosity and permeability to allow in situ heating of the fragmented shales. This can be accomplished by using explosives. However, it has been found that the existing blasting systems, though very efficient, have some drawbacks. The explosives become insensitive when shot in multiplevertical decks. They can also become insensitive when spaced horizontally at close proximity to other charges. Also, since the blasting is done in a very limited free face, the delay time that can be allowed between charges is also quite limited. Consequently, it is not always possible to routinely predict the performance of the blasting system. Furthermore, since it is not possible to undertake secondary blasting, it is imperative that the blast design function properly. Recent successful retorting by Occidental Petroleum Co. Of Retorts 7 and 8 suggests that some of these problems may have been overcome. This paper addresses some aspects of in situ retorting and problems that have impeded the development of a viable oil shale industry in the US.

The present truce in litigation between Western smelting and ranching interests gives opportunity for a summary of the results achieved by metallurgists in condensing fume and de-acidifying furnace-gases. In the absence of complete records of past experiments, there ha's been a good deal of unliecessary duplication of attempts and failures. Yet, especially uilder the recent policy of our large corporations, looking to the economic recovery of the values of by- and waste products, . original and, in some cases, effective measures have been developed by American metallurgists. In the case of Bliss us. the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., the Montana Suprenle Court, recognizing the progressive efforts made to render the flue-gases innocuous, and the value to the community of the smelting company's operations, refused to hamper its work, and returned a verdict in favor of the defendant. In the trial, the experimental farms of the company ill the so-called "aff'ected region" were proved to be thriving perfectly, showing that immunity was guaranteed to vegetation and stock by tlle wide distribution of the sulyhurous acid gas in the dry air of Montana. Indeed, L. S. Austin has proved that by the time the fume is 4,000 ft, distant from the stack, the percentage of sulphurous acid has been diminished from 2.28 to 0.00045; and Angus Smith has shown that rain must contain 40 parts per million of free acid before vegetation is affected. Austenite is often defined as a solid solution of carbon or carbide in a nonmagnetic form of iron. Conversely, magnetic measurements are often used by investigators for the purpose of detecting the degree of austenite decomposition after an iron alloy has been subjected to certain thermal or mechanical treatments. Association of the magnetic state with the gamma-phase decomposition is often extended to the alloys of iron with elements other than carbon. Definition of austenite as a nonmagnetic solid solution cannot be accepted in the light of available information without certain reservations. The relation of magnetic transformations with the gamma-phase decomposition in the complex alloys of iron has never been rigorously proved. The present investigation deals primarily with the magnetic transformation that occurs in carbon steels during the quenching process. The work was further limited to a study of magnetic transformation in carbon steels quenched at such rates as are necessary to retain the product of austenite decomposition in a martensitic state. Peevious Work Considerable information has accumulated in the literature with respect to the magnetic transformation in alloys of iron, but nearly all of it relates to transformations under the conditions of equilibrium between the phases of the alloy. The economics of pressure tunnel design emphasize the utmost utilization of the least expensive pressure-resisting material available, namely, the rock surrounding the tunnel. A major difficulty in the design is the problem of transferring internal hydraulic pressure to the rock through a tunnel lining or membrane provided to maintain watertight conditions. The lining is necessary not only to prevent water loss, but to prevent the diffusion of water at high pressure through joints and fractures beyond the confines of the tunnel, an occurrence which could ultimately affect the stability of the rock mass through which the tunnel passes. Because of its toughness and ability to bridge localized areas of weakness, steel is used for a lining material whenever high internal pressures are involved. The steel lining is coupled to the surrounding rock mass through an annular ring of concrete backfill. It is paradoxical that the steel lining, needed primarily to assure water tightness, must of necessity be incorporated into the structure as a major pressure-resisting component, not to augment the bearing capacity of the concrete and rock, but to limit the strain for the safety and preservation of the steel lining itself. With the deformation modulus of the steel so much greater than that of the rock, the liner approaches its yield strength before the load capacity of the rock can be fully mobilized. Pole figures, torque curves, and coercive force have been determined for the following rolled and annealed permanent magnet alloys: Cunife, Cunico, Silmanal, Vicalloy I, Vicalloy II, and Heusler's Alloy. IN the general category of precipitation-type permanent magnet alloys there is a group of ductile alloys, including Cunife, Cunico, Silmanal, Heusler's Alloy and Vicalloy, which can be extensively rolled and annealed to develop a preferred orientation in the crystals of the matrix material. The rolling and annealing textures of Cunifel and Vicalloy' have been previously investigated qualitatively, but no pole figures are available in the literature. In addition, the role of precipitation in these permanent magnet alloys is still somewhat controversial. It

The improvement in leaching introduced by the Russell process has stimulated the development of processes for refining lixiviation-sulphides. In the early days several processes for dealing with the sulphides were proposed, and some of them were tried more or less ; but the business finally settled down to sending the sulphides to the smelters, although this was known to be both troublesome and expensive. In 1891 Mr. C. A. Stetefeldt* introduced at the Marsac mill, Park City, Utah, an unpatented process, built up out of the general fund of information available. It consisted in matting the sulphides, grinding, roasting, grinding again, and dissolving the copper out in diluted sulphuric acid, then melting the silver and crystallizing the bluestone. It did not yield fine bullion, hence the bullion had to be refined as well as parted; besides, there was some loss. This process was thoroughly tried at the Marsac refinery and then a year's run was made, the net result of which was that it did not prove sufficiently better than the sending of the sulphides to the smelters to warrant its substitution for that practice. In 1893 the Dewey-Walter Refining Company undertook the refining of the Daly sulphides in the Marsac refinery by the sulphuric acid process, upon which two United States patents ? have been issued to the writer. Naturally, difficulties were encountered in starting a new process, and most of 1893 was taken up in getting it into smooth working order; but in 1894 a run was started, in which all the regular sulphides produced by the

SANDSTONE has been prepared for glassmaking purposes, and marketed from the White River Valley in-Arkansas at Guion, Izard County, since about 1910-soon after the completion of the White River Branch of the Missouri Pacific R. R. Co. Until 1921, operations were somewhat spasmodic and ended in many failures. In that year a plant was built by the Silica Products Co., Inc., and since that time the operation has been continuous and steady. The land is held under leases, covering about 30 sq. mi. of the best sandstone adjacent to the railroad. Most of the product is shipped to glassmakers. GEOLOGY The St. Peter sandstone is rather widely distributed in north central Arkansas and- is exposed most prominently in outcrops along the slopes of the White River Valley and its tributaries that form the division between the Boston Mountains to the south and the Salem Plateau of the Ozarks to the north. It is of Ordovician age and is generally underlain by Cotter dolomite and capped by Plattin limestone, except in the vicinity of Bellefonte and Everton. At those places, it is a massive cross-bedded, laminated, saccharoidal sandstone; underlying it is the Everton limestone and overlying it, the Joachim magnesium limestone. The sandstone at Everton contains numerous phosphatic pebbles and inclusions of sandy limestone. The irregularity of cross-section, the evidence of sorting action and the phosphatic pebbles appear to be indications of secondary deposition.

Some explanation of methods of testing will be given before presenting the record of a series of physical tests of aluminum, other metals and alloys. I. The Methods Employed and Meaning of Diagrams. The test-bars used, 12 inches long and 4 inch square, are cast in green sand, with chills bedded in such a way that the ends of the bar run against them. By splitting the ends of the bar the depth of chill can be measured. The chills being held in the mould 121/8 inches apart, the space between the end of the bar and the face of the chill, after both are alike cold, is the amount of shrinkage, and is recorded in thousandths of an inch per foot.
