GRAHAM BRIGHT,* East Pittsburgh, Pa.-Bee-hive coke ovens are usually located at the mines, where the gases from the ovens are not strongly objectionable because the communities are not thickly built up. The byproduct oven will naturally he located near centers of industry, to which the coal can be brought from different directions and desirable mixtures can be made; where also the byproducts can be readily marketed, while the gas can be utilized for industrial and domestic purposes. Not much thought seems to have been given to the gases escaping from the byproduct coke oven, which are more or less objectionable in thickly populated sections. When the byproduct oven shall have been more widely installed, this question is likely to become serious, and it will be necessary to apply remedies. May I ask what has been done, or is going to be clone, in this direction? S. A. Moss, ? Lynn, Mass.-One cause of escaping gas is that the gas exhausters do not supply the proper suction. I read Professor Gaudin's paper with great interest and pleasure because for some time I have held that the chemical aspect of comminution is a subject of considerable importance to the mineral dresser and deserves to be thoroughly investigated. It does seem appropriate, however, to emphasize the fact that "fresh" edges and corners produced by the grinding of solids display enhanced reactivity has been recognized and utilized in the development of certain mineral identification techniques. Some of these techniques are worth noting, not only because they might facilitate research in the aspect of mineral dressing under discussion, but also because they emphasize the fact that many mineral species commonly regarded as being very inert can display a surprising reactivity when in the freshly ground state. In 1951 Isakov published a number of tests for the components of certain mineral species which depend essentially on grinding in a mortar a mixture of the material under investigation with a solid reagent. Thus when stibnite, 4(Sb2S,), is ground with sodium or potassium hydroxide, the antimony is revealed by a momentary development of a yellow color which changes in air to orange-red. Other antimony minerals need a preliminary treatment before the test can be carried out. This consists of grinding with aluminium sulfate, ferric sulfate or potassium bisulfate, and breathing upon the resultant mixture.

The communication which I hare to lay before my fellow-members of the Institute, is no elaborate paper, nor the statement of any great discovery; it is simply the record of convenient methods of conducting topographical survey?, and of keeping the notes of the same; methods that have grown out of practical experience, and have saved me many a day's labor by facilitating office and field work, and at the same time secured a greater degree of accuracy than is obtained by the methods now in general use. I assume it as granted that no topographical map is worthy of the name, except it represent the elevations and depressions of the surface by means of horizontal or contour lines. In the Ordnance Survey of Great Britain, the contour lines are traced for every fifty feet vertical height, I believe, by running out the line with level and compass through all its meanderings on the surface; this, of course, is a very tedious, though accurate process, but " in the woods," where many of our surveys have to be made, it would be practically impossible. Nature: Man is but one of the creatures which in- habit the earth, a dust speck in the universe. Thinking man has been concerned with his place and purpose in the universe since the earliest Egyptian and Chinese philosophers. Ancient creeds, as well as modern religions and philosophies of life, were concerned with the same problem. While such considerations and concepts have been valuable, theoretical philosophizing and dogmatic concepts are inadequate for a satisfactory solution of world problems of today. The concepts of man and life and their ultimate purpose should be sought in the relations of intelligent man to man and their relation- ship to the physical world. The quintessence of nature's accomplishment-man- is also the greatest disturber of nature and the greatest enemy of his own kind. While his spirit and mind defy and overcome natural limitations, his physical self is controlled by the same basic biochemical laws that govern any other form of living matter. This paradoxical duality of human voluntary and involuntary relations to nature is the source of the perpetual conflict between mind and matter. Therefore, the higher the spiritual evolution and perfection of the individual's mind, the greater and deeper the conflicting elements in their expression; and conversely, the simpler the mind or the mental and spiritual heritage, the less is the individual concerned with the conflicting elements.

There seems to be in the public mind, and even in the minds of some coal-operators not experienced in mines subject to dust-explosions, a feeling that there has been somet-hing mysterious at the bottom of a number of recent American colliery-exploaions. It has been declared in cases of accidents in mines regarded as particularly well equipped, in which every preventive precaution was said to have been taken, that the explosions were incomprehensible, and resulted from causes beyond the present knowledge of the practical coal-operator. But it is safe to say that no explosion has taken place which could not be explained by reasons well understood by most operators. The U. S. Geological Survey Testing Laboratory, recently inaugurated at Pittsburg for the reported purpose of investigating scientifically the matter of explosions in mines, will discover no new explanation of explosions. It can, however, co-ordinate the previous investigations of similar boards in England and on the Continent; and it may do a vast amount of good by promulgating widely, and in a form comprehensible to the most unlettered miner, certain facts and obvious deductions that cannot but have an effect in reducing the number and extent of the mine-disasters which, in the last few years, have been so terrible in frequency and magnitude.

Pennsylvania has been a leader in the pageant of industrial America because of her natural mineral re- sources, geographical location, and the ingenuity and industry of her citizens. Brick and other clay products were manufactured in Philadelphia in William Penn's time. Ores of iron, zinc, lead, and copper were mined and smelted in eastern Pennsylvania long before the Revolution. Coal was mined on a commercial basis in the anthracite region as early as 1820 and in the bituminous fields in 1830. The first canals and railroads were constructed to transport minerals and mineral products. Oil was struck at Titusville in 1859. A significant event occurred in 1855-the establishment of the Farmers' High School-Pennsylvania's first attempt to provide higher education for its youth. The Farmers' High School included instruction in geology, mineralogy, and assaying. In 1859 the laws of Pennsylvania transferred to the School the state geological and mineralogical collections formerly located in Harrisburg. Well-informed people are familiar with the effects of the Land-Grant Act of 1862. With inspiring words it established state institutions of higher learning where "the leading object shall be, without excluding other scientific and classical studies . . . to teach such branches of learning as are related to agriculture and the mechanic arts . . . in order to promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes in the sev-

MOTT and Hainesl have summarized the available techniques for the examination of aluminum and some anisotropic metals under polarized light. Many of these techniques are rather complicated and cumbersome. This note presents a simplified procedure for using polarized light to obtain information about the crystallographic orientation of any particular grain in a magnesium alloy. Since other hexagonal metals are more anisotropic than magnesium, similar methods might well be applied to them. Ernst and Laves2 produced a double-refracting layer on magnesium alloy specimens by SuCCeSSiVe etches in solutions of perchloric acid in alcohol, magnesium perchlorate in perchloric acid and alcohol, and calcium and magnesium carbonates in water. They examined their specimens under polarized light and were able to determine the direction of the hexagonal axis in any particular grain from a measurement of the extinction behavior of that grain. The disadvantages of their technique were the complexity of the etching procedure and the explosive hazard of the perchloric acid-alcohol solutions. Results equivalent to those of Ernst and Laves were obtained in this investigation after etching specimens for 6 to 8 sec in an acetic picral solution containing 100 parts 6 pct picral, 10 parts distilled water and. 5 parts acetic acid. WHEN plants decay in a peat bog the woody parts form a brown pasty mass, or peat muck, largely soluble in. alkalis. This brown matter has been termed "ulmin." The same material, but commonly black in color, is found in coal, and there is evidence of the similarity between the material forming the main bulk of the coal and the bulk of the more recently decayed material in peat bogs. The. more recent or low-rank coals, such as lignite, little removed from the peat stage, contain notable percentages of alkali-soluble ulmins, but the percentage decreases with increased, degree of coalification and is negligible in bituminous or higher rank coals. The determination of the alkali-soluble ulmins in any coal gives, therefore, an indication, of its degree of coalification or rank. Coals which contain few or no ulmins soluble in alkalis do contain ulmins which can be rendered soluble by oxidation. The higher the rank of the coal, the more difficult it is to oxidize the insoluble ulmins and make them soluble. High-rank coals can be differentiated by oxidation tests on the, insoluble ulmins; but low-rank coals can be characterized by both their soluble and insoluble ulmins. This paper deals with the determination and significance of the alkali-soluble ulmins, present, as such in- the coal. The chemical nature and composition of ulmins are not discussed.

Diamond drilling through caving formations at depths greater than ZOO0 ft has long presented serious difficulty, generally solved either by casing or cementing. Casing is permitted only when the resulting smaller hole is acceptable, and cementing is frequently a problem at depth. A new method that injects cement under pressure at the desired location is an aid in diamond drilling deep holes. DRILLING through caving formations in diamond drill holes at depths greater than 2000 ft has long been a serious problem. These caving formations are normally passed only by casing the hole or by cementing the hole. Casing the hole is possible only when a resulting smaller hole is acceptable. In as much as only a limited number of reductions are economically practical, cementing is frequently considered the only method suitable for solving these problems. Cementing either by pumping a slurry into the hole or by dropping cylinders containing cement has proved satisfactory on holes under 2000 ft. In holes substantially deeper than 2000 ft these methods are not satisfactory, since during the pump- ing process cement separates out, whereas cylinders usually break before the bottom of the hole is reached. A new procedure, the injector method, apparently solves these problems.* With this method, cement is lowered in the hole in a cylinder, the cement being

The method of seismic reflection prospecting has many times been compared to sound ranging, a process that became familiar to many during the World War. According to this very simple theory, the dynamite goes off and sends out a compression wave, which meets a reflecting horizon and returns to the surface, where it is recorded and the elapsed time of its travel in the earth accurately determined. Computations are then made on the general theory that the longer the elapsed time, the greater the depth of the reflecting bed. While this serves to give an idea of the fundamental basis of the process, it suggests a simplicity that does not exist in the life history of the various waves set up by a dynamite explosion in the earth. To begin with, a seismic wave in the earth does not obey the same simple laws of propagation that apply to a sound wave in the air. The property of strength in shear possessed by solids introduces a factor that sets such waves apart from the ordinary air waves. Also, the transmission charactcristics of the earth vary widely from place to place, and a fairly accurate knowledge of the space relationships of these variations is necessary if the final results are to be understood. Faulty rock dusting of the New Orient Mine at West Frankfort, Ill. was declared to have been the primary cause of the extent of the blast that killed 119 men on December 21. Walter Eadie, state director of mines and minerals, ascribed the explosion to the ignition of methane in a working place about a mile northwest of the shaft of the mine. The initiation of the combustion was either by a spark from electrical machinery or from men smoking in the mine. It was surmised that a train of empty cars stalled in a ventilation door, had caused sufficient disturbance in the ventilation system to permit accumulation of gases. The Federal Bureau of Mines said that the Illinois explosion was caused by an electrical spark that touched off the clouds of gas present because of the faulty ventilation equipment. The bureau report listed three conditions as primarily responsible: An inadequate ventilating system, operation of faulty electrical equipment and the presence of large accumulations of fine coal dust capable of exploding. "This coal dust, principally along roadways, was not removed from the mine or rendered inert by the application of sufficient rock dust," the report stated. Investigations showed that an even more disastrous blast was averted because the explosion eventually reached areas where it could expand into open workings and where enough rock dust had been applied to retard it.

INTRODUCTION The Friedensville mine is situated in Upper Saucon Township, Le- high County, Pennsylvania, in the southern central part of the Allentown quadrangle of the United States Geological Survey, approximately 5 miles southeast of the City of Allentown and 4 miles south of the City of Bethlehem. Zinc was first discovered in the Friedensville area early in the 19th century and several mines were operating during the latter part of the century. Zinc oxide was produced in 1853 and zinc metal in 1859. All mining in the area ceased in 1893 chiefly because of an unfavorable economic situation caused by a severe ground water problem and competition from the higher grade ores in New Jersey. Property acquisition by the New Jersey Zinc Company began in 1899 and periodic exploratory drilling was carried on until 1940 when sufficient reserves were proved for development of a mine. Shaft sinking was undertaken in 1947 and, due to severe hydrologic conditions, was not completed until 1952. Production began in 1958 and today the mine is producing about 64,000 tons of zinc concentrate per annum. The concentrates are trucked to the Company's smelter at Palmerton, Pennsylvania, approximately 30 miles north of Friedensville. The mine also produces from its mill tailings industrial and agricultural grades of limestone for commercial markets.

ADVANCES in the production of quality steel have emphasized the need for greater knowledge of the amount and distribution of oxygen in the steel. Control of inclusion content and quality is largely dependent on such knowledge. While many analytical methods have been de-vised for the accomplishment of this end, few are without serious limita-tions in accuracy, convenience, or skill required in application. Usually at least two methods are necessary to determine total oxygen and constituent oxides. Because of the great importance of this problem and the specific interest in the application of such methods of analysis, the various procedures were carefully reviewed at the Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, with the view of developing a method free from the limitations mentioned above. Intensive experimentation finally led to an improved iodine extraction analysis described by Cunningham and Price. I After this had been thoroughly checked from the standpoint of the analytical chemist, it was rechecked from that of the metallurgist. This involved preparation of a number of small heats of varying composition with determination of total oxygen in the molten metal by the alumina method2 and an analysis of the solidified material without the aluminum addition by means of iodine extraction; the oxides of iron, manganese, silicon and aluminum also being determined by the iodine analysis. The report of this work constitutes the subject of this paper.

The attention of physicists and metallurgists has been directed toward the study and explanation of the deformation textures in metals for the past 15 years. In 1920 N. Uspenski and S. Konobejewskil were first able to show that the symmetrical X-ray diffraction effects that had been previously reported by E. Hupka2 and others in metal foils were caused by a directed arrangement of the crystallites. Since then, the systematic study of textures resulting from the application of the pure forces of tension or compression to polycrystalline materials has been supplemented by many investigations on deformed single crystals, which have greatly added to our knowledge of deformation. However, despite the valuable information secured from these comparative studies only four investigations upon cold-rolled single crystals of any of the face-centered cubic metals have been reported in the literature. This lack of quantitative data is especially unfortunate because of the much greater practical significance of rolling textures and their effects in both cold-rolled and annealed materials. This investigation was undertaken for the purpose of specifying the deformation of rolled single crystals in the hope that such information might later facilitate the explanation of polycrystal-line textures. The ores of the region are contained in rocks of pre-Cambrian age, which, for most of the country up to recent years, have usually been referred to as “crystalline schists” or “crystalline complex;” and regarded principally as a metamorphosed basement-unit upon which the sedimentary rocks, beginning with the Paleozoic, were laid down. In the Lake Superior region this pre-Cambrian complex presents an' unusual variety of rocks with determinable relations. It has been possible, with the large expenditures which the magnitude of the iron-mining industry warrants, to work out their stratigraphy to a larger degree than bas been possible in almost any other area of pre-Cambrian rocks. [The portion here omitted contains descriptions of the Archean, Algonkian, and Keweenawan rocks of the several districts, their structure, distribution, correlation, and succession. INASMUCH as the arrangements for the preparation of the review of progress and new developments in the field of industrial minerals (non-metallics) were not made until early December, the writing of this review could not be completed in time to appear in this issue and will, therefore, appear in the February issue. However, we desire to call attention to the steadily increasing importance of this group of mineral substances. The recent book, "Industrial Minerals and Rocks," published by the Institute, lists 47 principal varieties of nonmetallic minerals to which may be added several more of lesser importance. Because of the wide variety of uses to which many of these industrial minerals are put, it is difficult to classify them into categories, but to mention a few examples which indicate the widespread industrial employment of these minerals and their products, one may cite: the use of limestone, gravel, sand, clay products, lime, cement, and gypsum in the construction industry; fluorspar, lime, salt, borax, and sulphur in the chemical industry; diamond, corundum, emery, garnet, flint, quartz sand, tripoli. and diatomite in the abrasive industry; fluorspar, limestone, and magnesite in the metallurgical industry; clay, feldspar, fluorspar, flint, chalk, and limestone in the ceramic industry; and asbestos, gypsum, mica, vermiculite, magnesia, diatomite, and rock wool in the heat, sound and elec-

In Emporia or Claremore, time was when a path was beaten to the door of the local sage. Nowadays, the beginnings of such a path are discernible in Tennessee, as folks of the metallurgical persuasion find it to their pleasure and profit to call upon the Sage of Copperhill. They come, more and more respectfully as the years go by, yet to ever fewer persons is he known as Mr. Myers, but to more, eloquently, as Jack. Find better ways to run your mill, find happier means of co-ordinating your humanities or serving your professional society, and it's just like the man said about the mousetrap. A druggist's son, born in Wisconsin, May 24, 1889, reared on the Bible in Ohio and Indiana, and completing his education in Colorado, this now indisputably 24-carat Tennesseean has had a checkered career. Going West as a laborer at the tail end of the 1907 panic, he did not make his fortune but he did gain an understanding of labor that in later years endeared him to his men. Graduating in 1913 from Colorado School of Mines with the degree of E. Met. and a string of football letters (also earned the hard way, at tackle) he went to work in Butte & Superior, just at the beginning of the Golden Age of flotation.
