Many different methods of measuring the in-situ stress field have been developed in recent years. They are all based on the assumption of elasticity without allowing any viscoelastic deformation. By using the high resolution strain-measuring technique recently developed in the laboratory at Serata Geomechanics, many rocks were found to be viscoelastic. The viscoelasticity of rock media was found to be dependent upon the resolution of the strain measurement. The higher the resolution of the strain measurement, the greater number of rocks could be identified as viscoelastic. All rocks eventually exhibit viscoelastic deformation under high stresses relative to the strength of the material. Therefore, the conventional methods of elasticity become less reliable with increase of ground stress. In deep underground formations, even hard rocks become viscoelastic. At the same time, many ground formations near the surface are actually viscoelastic. A new method was developed in the laboratory to determine the in-situ stress field in viscoelastic rock media. Rocks in general exhibit a small amount of viscoelastic creep whenever mean stress and octahedral shearing stress are changed substantially from their initial states. Such changes take place around a borehole immediately following the drilling although they are short-lived. We developed a viscoelastic method of determining the in-situ stress field by relating the time-dependent behavior of the borehole with the tensor properties and stress field of the underground. A pRopeR consideration of the subject of this paper should include economic aspects as well as the technical phases of the metallurgy, production, and properties of the product. The metallurgical phases of the processing and properties of the product will be considered only from practical aspects and within the scope of the writer's experience with tonnage production. The Bessemer process was invented 85 years ago and became important because it put steel manufacture upon a larger and less costly basis. In America the Bessemer production has declined for many years and has not maintained its proportionate place with the rapid advances of the open hearth. The achievements in the open-hearth field were attained by the greater number of technical people attracted to that branch of the industry. The antipathy of technical students for the older and less popular Bessemer field gradually weakened the forces defending it and retarded the development of new and better methods. In Europe the economic advantage of the basic Bessemer process has not been overlooked and the tonnage usually is greater than that of the open hearth. The acid process has been the subject of renewed attention in America during the past few years and those who are more familiar with it are striving to show that the method is too valuable to abandon. A considerable tonnage of Bessemer-blown metal, in both molten and ingot forms, used in connection with the open-hearth practice makes it an important auxiliary unit to the industry. This practice aids in modifying the price level of heavy remelting scrap in addition to speeding up the open-hearth operation. The use of Bessemer steel has continued not only because of periodic economic advantages but also because of certain inherent qualities of machinability, weldability and stiffness, which are valuable for many applications. The properties of stiffness and rather high reaction to cold-work require some modification in order to meet the demands of modem methods of processing, which involve cold-reduction and cold-forming. At least one factor contributing to the stiffness of this steel is the relatively high phosphorus content of the acid product. The phosphorus content of the Thomas or basic Bessemer steel of Europe is considerably lower than the normal acid product in America. The American industry has continued the use of the acid process chiefly for the reason that the available ores are more easily adapted to this process from both metallurgical and economic standpoints. In European practice the basic process is necessary with the highly phosphoric ores available and it is sustained to some degree by the sale of the rich phosphate slag as a by-product. The basic process was used in this country at several plants many years ago, but was abandoned for economic reasons. A part of the past history of these trials is given here because the author believes it has not been published and it has some bearing on the subject of this paper. INTRODUCTION The administrative processes of coal mines are becoming increasingly complex. As society evolves into a more complicated structure with greater emphasis on individuality, government regulations reach deeply into every activity in an effort to force individuals into a standardized mold. These contradictory pressures add an extra burden to the administration of a mining operation. Recent years have brought a substantial change in the skills needed by mine supervisors and managers. As a result, a better understanding of the administrative functions is necessary. The mine superintendent has the overall responsibility for the mine; for effective operation he must be sufficiently knowledgeable to oversee all the complex functions that make up the mine. This chapter does not cover all the administrative requirements because of the variation in mine operation and in company policies and organizational structure. It does attempt to identify the administrative functions that would be required at a large mine with a preparation plant. It is assumed that the mine operation is decentralized with very little duplication of functions at the organizational levels above the mine. Thus each function is assumed to be relatively complete at the mine and under the general supervision of the mine superintendent. WHEN I was honored by being invited to give the Howe Memorial Lecture, I decided to read Howe's book, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," published in 1916-that is, about 25 years ago-in search of a text. I found the book written in fine, clear, attractive, yet precise style, as I expected, knowing that his father ¬Dr. Samuel Gridley Howe, his mother-Julia Ward Howe, and all of his four brothers and sisters had lived in a New England literary atmosphere and had written books. This leads me to suggest that many authors of metallurgical papers and books could well study Howe's writings with a view to the improvement of their own. I failed to find a specific text, but did find a subject, for in reading his book I was struck by the few instances in which time is considered explicitly as a factor in the phenomena examined, and by the fact that many of the hottest arguments would have been settled had time been taken properly into account. Indeed, Howe hardly mentions time except in a rather incidental way, as in a few references to lag; for instance: The lowering of temperature at which the transformation occurs by rapid cooling . . . is a phenomenon of undercooling or lag. It is in part explained by the fact that the transformation itself is a time-consuming reaction which, setting in during a rapid fall of temperature. is naturally protracted till the temperature has sunk far below that at which it is due. He does discuss, quite fully, the iron-carbon equilibrium diagram, as known at that time, introducing it by stating: As he is a reasonable man who is not deterred from using a hand truck for moving his trunk by the consideration that he has thus to move a trunk plus a truck, so am I reasonable in putting into your hands this useful, indeed indispensable, tool for mastering the ABC of iron metallurgy. Somewhat later, in introducing a discussion of the phase rule, which "it would be hardly proper to pass . . . by without an attempt to outline its meaning," for "a clear exposition of its applicability or jurisdiction is needed to restrain the half-initiated from misusing it and the uninitiated from being misled by these misuses," he writes-and I quote his statement because we cannot properly discuss the influence of time on a process until we know the state of equilibrium which would ultimately be reached by the system under consideration It is a most remarkable and valuable generalization, its conceptions help greatly toward getting a broad outlook on metallography, but its misconception has brought out a flood of obscuring writings. It tells us about the constitution towards which alloys tend, that which they reach when equilibrium is complete, when all tendencies have corrected themselves and have been complied with completely. The mining possibilities of the volcanic area south of Bel-mont, Nye county, Nevada, have long been known. Some of the old-time prospectors knew that gold existed there. Its remoteness from any source of supplies, its long distances from water, the absence of game, and more, perhaps, the lack of grass for animals to subsist upon, has made this an unattractive region in which to search for mines. The decline of the Comstock mines, the exhaustion of sundry large and rich ore-bodies, the high cost of mining, marketing, and, particularly, the ruinously high freight-charges upon refractory ore that had to be shipped to distant smelters, have kept investors out of Nevada for the last few gears; and mining people have hardly yet awakened to the importance of To-nopah, Goldfield, and perhaps the newer and less developed districts. The discovery of Tonopah by J. L. Butler, who located the Mizpah claim in May, 1900, and the fortunes soon realized there, attracted many people. As the boom declined, many went away, some scattering out into the surrounding country, and the population is now about 7,000. In the fall of 1902 a discovery of gold was made 23 miles south, in what is now known as the Sandstorm group, 4 miles NW. of Goldfield. In the winter of 1903—4 the Combination, January and Florence mines were discovered, and shipments of high-grade ore soon followed. In January, 1905, there were 10,000 people in Gold-field. In June, 1904, rich gold-ore was found 85 miles SE., at the foot of the south end of the Kawich mountains, but this discovery was kept quiet until a re-location could be made. On August 10, 1904, the Bullfrog claims, and a month later the Ladd mountain and neighboring claims, were located. The Shoshone group was located September 24. This district is

I. INTRODUCTION. These notes are submitted, not as a discussion of the modern practice of electrolytic-copper refining, but as the record of a refinery that was among the pioneers in the field and that is to-day, and has been for 17 years, operating under conditions not to be found in any similar plant in the country. I refer to the current density, which is at least 60 per cent. higher than that regularly employed elsewhere, and to the fact that the anodes treated are the direct product of the converter rather than of the reverberatory furnace. The writer has no knowledge of any other refinery treating anodes of this character.

THE Wisconsin zinc district, also known as the Upper Mississippi lead and zinc district, is an area of about 2500 sq. mi. in the southwestern portion of Wisconsin and adjacent parts of Illinois and Iowa. It includes Iowa, Grant and Lafayette counties in Wisconsin, Jo Davies County in Illinois, and an irregular strip of Clayton and Dubuque counties in Iowa, parallel to the Mississippi River. During periods of high metal prices mining has been quite active in this district, but recently the lower metal prices have caused many companies to suspend, so that at the present time there are only a small number of mines operating. The short life of these mines and the low mineral content of the zinc deposits limit the investment in development and equipment, and necessitates the operation of this equipment at maximum running time and maximum capacity. The tonnage of rock handled (locally termed dirt) is large in comparison with the tonnage of concentrate produced. Moreover, the zinc content of the concentrate is low, varying from 25 to 40 per cent zinc, and the value per ton is correspondingly low. The life of the mines varies greatly. An exception-ally good deposit may produce 2,000,000 tons of rock during a period of ten years, market value permitting, from which will be obtained 100,000 to 150,000 tons of concentrate. One property which might be con-sidered as fulfilling the requirements of a profitable operation was developed and equipped in 1925, oper-ated continuously for a period of two and a half years, produced 484,292 tons of rock, from which was obtained 37,659 tons of zinc concentrate, 34.4 per cent Zn, and 1155 tons of lead concentrate, 67 per cent Pb. During the war period prices of ore permitted the mining of lower grade ores than has been possible in the past few years. The maintaining of a higher grade mill-feed has resulted in reducing the size of stopes formerly carried in the old mines and confining the workings within narrower limits.

IN flotation lime is used to depress pyrite. For this purpose it is preferred to caustic soda. The low cost of lime and the widespread availability largely account for this preference. However, there is some evidence' that pyrite is more readily depressed by calcium than by sodium ions at the same pH. To measure the difference in adsorption of calcium and sodium, which is thought to lie at the basis of the differences in depressing action, radionuclides of calcium and sodium have been used. The experimental work has included an evaluation of the effect of dissolved oxygen, of the concentration of calcium or sodium, of the concentration of hydrogen ion, and of the anions present. Preliminary work in the investigation entailed preparation of the pyrite, development of a technique for counting pyrite coated with Ca and Na, the radionuclides used, and development of an apparatus to study the adsorption of calcium and sodium on pyrite. The main experimental work included calcium adsorption and sodium adsorption studies detailed below. The following are the most salient observations made during these experiments. In this paper, we report the results of a study of the characteristics of Texas lignite based on a proximate analysis data base previously published by the Bureau of Economic Geology, University of Texas at Austin and the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The original impetus for this study was the desire to perform a parameter study in connection with the siting of potential underground gasification tests in Texas. A numerical model of the gasification process was available and required proximate analysis data, among other parameters, as input. If proximate data were available for a particular site, a prediction of the product gas quality could be made. However, in preliminary siting studies, it would be advantageous to know what the desirable characteristics of the lignite are, in order to target general areas for drilling. Consequently, a parameter study was in order. This paper presents the methodology required to systematically vary proximate analysis parameters and estimate the corresponding energy content for various group(or formation)-facies classifications of Texas lignite.

The external corrosion of casing is one of the most important problems facing the present day production man. A 1953 NACE report' estimated the annual cost of casing corrosion at $2,200,000 in 22 fields studied. The fields represented only 10 per cent of the wells in the United States. It was significant that 77 per cent of the failures reported were due to external corrosion. A variety of means for combatting the casing corrosion problem have been discussed in papers such as the NACE survey' mentioned previously. No attempt to revicw these will be made in this paper. Thc scope of this paper has been limited to a discussion of the following major items: (I) an instrument for studying external electrolytic corrosion; (2) use of this instrument to determine the quantity of protective current required to prevent corrosion of casing; and (3) problem of accelerated external corrosion of the oil string at the base of the surface string. ELECTROCHEMICAL MECHANISM OF CORROSION It IS gcncrally belleved that one major cause of external corrosion is the existence of electrolytic cells operating between various formation waters. A theoretical discussion of the role of earth potentials in casing corrosion has been presented by L. de Witte and F. J. Radd.2 A brief picture of the electrolytic corrosion action between two differcnt formations (A and B) is presented in Fig. I. This picture is a review to many but is given to insure clarity. In the anode area, oxidation takes place as iron ions go into solution in formation A as a product of corrosion. In the cathode area. reduction takes place and hydrogen atoms are formed at the boundary between the pipe and formation B. The flow of electrons. as indicated. is into the pipe at the anode or corroding area and out of the pipe into the formation at the cathode. In order to conform with regulations of this journal, the flow of a conventional current (I! is also indicated in this sketch. All subsequent references will be to this so-called conventional current flow and will be indicated by the symbol (I). As this action takes place the layer of hydrogen developed on the cathode offers a resistance to the flow of current in the cell. It is said (hat the cathode has been polarized. This polarizing film can be rcmoved by addition of a so-called dcpolarizing agent which reacts with and removes this hydrogen film. Such an agent must be present in ordcr for this corrosion reaction to go at a rate sufficient to cause a severe corrosion problem. The two common depolarizing agents are: (I) oxy-sen. which readily reacts with hydro gen to form water, and (2) certain bacteria which use atomic hydrogen as part of their life process. It is not difficult to explain the presence of these agents. Oxygen may be present in some very shallow formations. Sulfate reducing bacteria are found to exist in nearly any ground where mud pits might be dug. THE CASING POTENTIAl-PROFILE Instrumentation A sketch of the equipment* uscd in determining casing potential profiles is shown in Fig. 2. The tool is run in the hole using a hoist truck with a three-conductor cable. This tool must be run with tubing and rods out of the hole and should be run with the flow line disconnected. By proper choice of electrode size it can be run in any size casing. The electrodes must be run in an open hole or a hole filled with oil. Measurements cannot be made while immersed in water. The tungsten carbide-tipped knives serve as the electrical robes and arc spaced 25 ft apart. Can wet-ground mica be produced from mica schist ores, and if so, would its properties be comparable with products now on the market? This was the problem which prompted the development of a flowsheet for the beneficiation of mica schist. The fine-ground mica industry relies on weathered pegmatites and alaskite ores as sources of raw material. The mica concentrates obtained from these ores are relatively clean and require moderate beneficiation to meet color and bulk-density specifications. Mica obtained from mica schist is iron-stained and decrepitated and requires additional beneficiation to produce a wet-ground mica product. Despite these adversities, there are several advantages to be gained by mining and processing mica schist ores. The mica content of these ores is considerably higher than that of the pegmatites and alaskite ores now being mined, often containing in excess of 40% mica. This higher-grade mica feed should promote a lower mining and milling cost. The mica schist ores with their higher mica content would mean less tailings to handle; however, there would have to be a means for disposing of acid and sulfate wastes. A flowsheet was developed whereby mica could be recovered from mica schist ores and beneficiated in a way that would result in a high-quality end product.' The essential phase of the process involves using reducing reagents to increase the magnetic susceptibility of iron contaminants which then can be removed with a magnetic separator. General Treatment Procedure The mica is floated by either of two methods, an amine float in an acid circuit' or the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) amine-fatty acid float in an alkaline circuit' The flotation mica is ground in a pebble mill to liberate contaminated particles and expose iron-stained surfaces. The concentrate is then conditioned with a reducing reagent and passed through a Frantz Ferrofilter for the removal of magnetic material. The nonmagnetic product is acid-leached to further reduce the iron contamination. The leached material is then ground to product size and checked for specifications. Discussion of Flowsheet and Its Development Flotation: The mica is concentrated by flotation using either of two methods: an amine float in an acid circuit, or the USBM amine-fatty acid float in an alkaline circuit.' The writer does not wish to elaborate on the relative merits of the two flotation procedures; however, after investigating ores from various localities, it was felt that the amine float in an acid circuit was more consistent when using a standard procedure. Iron Reduction and Magnetic Separation: This phase of the flowsheet may be considered the key to the process. It was developed when it became apparent that hot acid leaching had just about reached its maximum effective¬ness for color improvement. S. C. Sun and William Hirsh in "Hydrochloric Acid Leaching of Iron From Pennsylvania Aluminous Clays,"` reported iron extraction for -20-mesh minerals of 82.20% for hematite and only 33.46% for magnetite. The test procedure employs a 19% hydrochloric acid solution, 104°C temperature, and 10% solids. It was felt that magnetic removal of some of the iron contaminants before leaching therefore would be advantageous. Since the iron minerals present as contaminants vary in magnetic susceptibility, it was decided to experiment with reducing reagents as a means of influencing their magnetic properties. Zinc hydrosulfite or sodium hydrosulfite were the reagents used throughout the tests. The procedure developed consists of conditioning the mica concentrate in a closed container at approximately 5% solids with a reducing reagent. Approximately 10.0 lb of zinc hydrosulfite per ton of mica concentrate is used. The ferric iron is reduced to the ferrous state (magnetic) and oxidation is retarded by isolation from the atmosphere in a closed container. ONE of the largest hard rock operations ever undertaken on the continent is part of the Aluminum Co. of Canada's gigantic British Columbia development in the mountainous wilderness back of the north coastal port of Prince Rupert. To provide electric power for the huge aluminum smelter under construction at Kitimat, 400 miles northwest of Vancouver, Alcan is reversing the flow of a 5000 sq mile drainage area by blocking the eastward-flowing Nechako River with the largest sloping clay core dam in the world. The backed-up waters of a 110-mile chain of lakes will be tapped at their eastern end by a 10-mile tunnel piercing a mile-high mountain range. From this tunnel water will pass through penstocks to a subterranean powerhouse after a drop of 2600 ft and empty into the Kemano River almost at tide water. A projected battery of eight turbine-driven generators will produce more than a million horsepower, although, initially, three generators of 140,000 hp each will be installed. Power will travel 50 miles across another mountain range, over a glacier, and across an arm of the ocean to what will ultimately be the world's largest aluminum smelter-a plant 2 ½ miles long. Ore smelted at Kitimat will come from Jamaica, but carving the tunnel, penstocks, and powerhouses cavern out of the heart of a mountain is so vast a job that most of the problems of a major mining operation are encountered. The powerhouse cavern alone is a big hard rock job. This chamber lies 1400 ft back from the mountain face and will eventually be 1100 ft long, 80 ft wide, and an average 118 ft high. Now under construction, the roof of this cavern will take the form of a parabolic arch. The prime contractors, Morrison-Knudsen Co. of Canada, are to excavate a length of 700 ft by May 1954. This section will provide a main control room, erection bay and space for eight generating units. The roof arch is to be lined with reinforced concrete and a plan now under study provides for concrete curtain walls separated from the rock sides of the cavern to prevent moisture accumulation. Cavern Excavation Excavation of the cavern began with the driving of an 8x8-ft exploratory drift 1500 ft long. Two horseshoe-shaped access and tailrace tunnels were bored to serve excavation work. These tunnels are approximately the same length as the exploratory drift and 25 ft high. The floors of both tunnels were graveled to permit the use of rubber-tired equipment. Eventually, the tailrace tunnel will be enlarged to 40 ft height to drain water from the turbine pits below the powerhouse floor. When the tunnels reached the cavern location, a mucking tunnel, approximately 25 ft square, was driven the projected length of the powerhouse at the floor level of the cavern. Another tunnel, 10 ft square, was carried in the same direction from the exploratory drift at the level of the arch spring line, 65 ft above the cavern floor. To connect these two tunnels, seven shafts 10 ft wide and approximately 80 ft long were driven through to the lower mucking tunnel, 65 ft below. These shafts were located on 120-ft centers, the length of the powerhouse cavern. Blasting is done from this upper tunnel to the final line of the roof arch. Two bulldozers, an International TD-24 and a TD-9, doze blasted material to the shafts where it drops to floor level. From here, the rock is loaded by Eimco loaders and power shovels into rubber-tired Koehring Dumptors and Euclid end-dump trucks. The arched roof section will be completely excavated and concreted before vertical blast holes are drilled down from the level of the arch spring line to the floor of the cavern. The arched roof section with its parabolic curve will have a width of 80 ft and a rise to the crown of 47 ft.

AN adequate supply of crystalline quartz of piezoelectric grade and size continues to be of fundamental importance to the U. S. Army Signal Corps. Current electronic development programs of the Armed Forces depend upon the use of quartz crystals in all applications where accurate frequency control is necessary. In peacetime this' may not seem too significant, but in planning for possible national defense emergencies, an adequate supply of piezoelectric grade raw quartz is just as important as an adequate supply of some of the more publicized strategic minerals. Prior to World War II, the Signal Corps accepted the use of quartz crystals for frequency-control purposes in essentially all electronic communication, navigation, and radar equipment operating in the audio and radio frequency spectra up to and including the ultra-high-frequency channels. Over 4,000; 000 lb of radio-grade quartz was required between January 1942 and V.J Day. Use of such a large quantity of crystal units was necessary in order to establish and maintain, with a minimum of effort, clear and definite frequency channels of greater stability than could be obtained by any other means. This policy was justified on the basis that quartz was without a peer as a frequency-controlling element. Military and civilian uses of quartz in the field, as well as laboratory studies, have confirmed this premise and no means of highly stable frequency control, superior to quartz, has been discovered. It appears certain that the demand for use of quartz for frequency control purposes will continue at a high level.

In the preparation of this paper the writer has been influenced by the fact that descriptions of various means of cleaning blast-furnace gas have been published and that further descriptive treatment of the subject will probably be less interesting than a statement of conclusions with regard to preferable methods which have been reached by him as a result of experience and observation in this country and also as a result of somewhat detailed investigation of the subject made toward the end of the year 1927 on the Continent of Europe and particularly in Germany. Owing to various circumstances, including a cost of fuel that is extremely high in relation to the wages of labor, the German iron and steel industry has accumulated experience in gas washing which is as yet in part lacking in the United States of America. The paper begins with a statement regarding the economics of the use of blast-furnace gas, then considers the principles and practices employed in its purification. Uses of Blast-furnace Gas For many reasons having to do with the utilization of coke-oven and blast-furnace gases in steel manufacture and with the use of hot metal, the blast furnace is now usually a part of a steel-producing unit, which also includes coke plant and rolling mill. Therefore both blast-furnace and coke-oven gas are usually applicable to any of the iron and steel-making processes, including the generation of power, and their allocation in any given works should be considered as a single problem. The uses to which blast-furnace gas, either alone or mixed with coke-oven gas may be put, include the following: Regenerative Heating of Ail. for the Blast Furnace.—This is the oldest and metallurgically the rnost important of all uses. It is universally performed with unmixed blast-furnace gas and under proper conditions should require not over 23.5 per cent. of the total gas generated for a blast temperature of 1350" F. For Steam-raising Purposes.—This is almost universally done with unmixed blast-furnace gas. From the standpoint of quantity used, it is at the present time the most important application in American steelworks practice.

Before hostilities between the colonies and Great Britain began in 1775, most of the coal used in the northern colonies undoubtedly came from England, with some supplies for New England coming from Nova Scotia; in New York and Philadelphia the supply came from England with some from the Virginia mines. Table 4 shows data obtained from the Public Records Office, London, for the years 1768-1772. This table supplements Table 3, which records only a few shipments from Richmond in 1768 and 1769; as there was no coal shown in imports coastwise in 1769 in Table 4, and only two small shipments in 1769 in Table 3, there may have been a cessation of shipments then, for some reason not now known. In Table 5 are incorporated all the data in the first two, with a few earlier years, and an attempt is made to estimate the amount used during the period by allowing for coal exported. With the small total tonnages a carryover from one year to another makes a large difference in the annual figures, but over the period the result may be fairly indicative of the amount of coal used before the Revolution. According to present day ideas the quantity of coal used during that war was very small, but apparently it was badly needed for the manufacture of the small amount of munitions made in those troublous days. As Philadelphia was the leading city along the Atlantic coast, and as the southeastern part of Pennsylvania was the leader in making iron, as well as making rifles, it is natural that the first call for coal came from there. At first, procuring supplies such as coal, powder and sulphur was handled by a Committee of Safety, which later became a Council of Safety and later this committee's functions were turned over to a Board of War, functioning with the military organization of the colony. . The organizations of the several colonies were slightly different, but Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia followed this scheme generally. Later in the war the Congress began to make arms for the troops, and it is difficult now, with the few records available, to tell when the state functions ceased and those of Congress began.
