At the annual meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Dec. 4 to 7, 1917, a great many matters were discussed and acted upon in which nearly all engineers are equally interested. Of the numerous sessions of the meeting, only a few of the most important can be referred too here. The Committee on Gages held an open meeting for the discussion of this important matter. Representatives from a large number of manufacturing plants and from several departments of the Federal Government were present. The question of gages and standardization of mechanical details is of course of paramount interest just now in connection with the manufacture of ordnance and ammunition. Standard Metals Corp.'s mining and milling operation at Silverton, Colo., has found that it can justify the use of a large computer system entirely on the basis of cost savings, and at the same time receive the benefits of speed, greater accuracy, and valuable data otherwise unobtainable at a reasonable cost. The Silverton operation consists of the historic Sunnyside mine and Mayflower mill, about 300 miles southwest of Denver, which produce about 700 tpd of a complex lead-zinc ore. This operation has not yet tried to use its computer for large, involved programs such as optimizing the efficiency of an operation, linear programming, or determining economic ore limits, although these are certainly within the capability of the equipment. However, there have been enough money-saving applications in the everyday routine to justify the use of this computer system, even before branching out into the more unusual or complex problems.

The old De Beers mine, which lies northwest of Dutoitspan mine at Kimberley, was the mine which launched Cecil Rhodes (In his historical career. It was the nucleus of the De Beers Mining Co. Ltd., formed in 1880, which later became De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd. Inactive for more than a half century, the De Beers Mine is being rejuvenated for a new era of operations. Both mines were on the Vooruitzicht farm owned by the De Beers brothers, who had bought it from the Orange Free State Government ten years previously for £50. Although the brothers sold it soon after the discovery of diamonds at Dutoitspan, they are remembered for having given their name to the foremost diamond mining company in the world. Diamonds worth nearly R180,000,000 have come from this ground, and more will be recovered when the mine is re-opened.

The brick walls of the Arey and Stetefeld furnaces have been remodelled into reverberatories and compound reverberatories, their binding and anchor irons have been forged into hoes and shovels, while the Crosby and Thompson cylinders have been rent by the ruthless hand of the foundryman searching for a tough piece of boiler plate. Two only of these furnaces remain in operation, of the large stock that came into Colorado by car-loads several years ago, and they occupy only a subordinate position to some reverberatories on the North Boulder Creek. Changes became necessary in dredging methods employed in Idaho through passage of the Dredge Mining Protective Act (1954). Among other provisions, the law requires dredge operators to construct settling ponds of sufficient capacity and character to reasonably clarify the water used in the mining process before such water is discharged into the stream. Porter Bros. Corp., a placer mining company with many years operating experience in Oregon and Montana, became interested in strategic mineral placers in Idaho in 1950 when it was learned that prospectors had discovered a radioactive mineral deposit in Bear Valley Creek, 95 miles northeast of Boise. The company acquired mining leases and proceeded with exploration and development work on the property. After extensive research had resulted in the determination of successful separation processes, contracts were negotiated with the federal government and deliveries of columbium-tantalum and uranium concentrates commenced in 1956.

Lack of a system in scheduling the replacement of capital equipment can result in emergency purchases of units which may later be found unsuitable for the job. New York Trap Rock Corp., which produces crushed stone for use as construction aggregate, was faced with just such a situation some years ago. The company replaced capital equipment only when machinery in use was no longer serviceable, or when there was an obvious need for different equipment. Operating and maintenance costs were generally neglected because an efficient method was lacking. New York Trap Rock has four plants located along the Hudson River, all within 70 miles of New York City. Crushed stone output-6 million tons a year-is moved to markets in metropolitan New York, New Jersey, and Long Island areas by water transport. Customers are contractors with ready-mix concrete and asphalt plants located on the water.

Zinc ores were first discovered in Tennessee in 1856 at Jefferson City where a deposit became the Mossy Creek mine. From that time until 1913, small- scale attempts at prospecting and mining were made in various parts of the district. The actual systematic development of the zinc deposit dates from 1913 when the American Zinc Co. started operations at Mascot. Mining in the Mascot-Jefferson City area today is devoted exclusively to the zinc sulfide, sphalerite. Various grades of zinc mineralization have been found intermittently through a 600-ft vertical thickness. However, the commercial ore is confined to a total thickness of about 250 ft, from which it usually is mined irregularly from four or five separate levels known locally as "ore runs." In a few places vertical thicknesses up to 150 ft have been mined where commercial material extended from one run to another.

This paper describes a number of model tests conducted in Plexiglas models to investigate the phenomenon of fracture pressurization. The models were examined with high speed photography while being subjected to explosive loading. At the same time pressure transducers were used to record the pressure in the borehole as a function of time and also along the path of the propagating fracture to measure the pressure at various locations along the fracture as a function of time. Both propellants and explosives were used to charge the borehole. Air as well as fluid filled boreholes were needed to provide a variety of pressure rise rates. On some tests eddy current displacement gauges measured crack opening displacements as a function of time. As a final check high speed photographs taken during the event were used to visually ascertain the location of the fracture at any given time.

Mineral exploration programs have often experienced mismanagement in the decision-making process, and these errors have consequently resulted in stockholder losses. Unfortunately, the events leading to these errors are little known and rarely studied, since managers aren't prone to publicizing their mistakes. However, a bit of magnified hindsight may serve to identify some of the problems. It is interesting to note that there does not seem to be a generally agreed-upon definition of the role and function of exploration management. Several articles have addressed this subject, written by both academic and industry exploration personnel. Two apparent thought trends can be observed: First, the theoreticians insist that modern scientific management principles can be directly applied, without modification, to mineral exploration. However, when one searches for the rules, the proponents rapidly retreat behind the computers and talk learnedly of management information systems and game theory.

Processes for manufacturing prereduced iron pellets from iron ore dust occurring in iron works have recently begun on an industrial scale. Because of their high porosity and low mechanical strength, these prereduced iron pellets tend to oxidize again and disintegrate into fine particles during transportation and storage; this may result in such difficulties as decreased yield, undesirable work environment and heat generation during oxidation. A possible process for avoiding oxidation and disintegration of prereduced pellets is increasing the density through briquetting. The authors carried out briquetting tests under various conditions, attempting to find optimum briquetting conditions. They found that crushing prereduced pellets and adjusting the particle size to a certain range before briquetting increased the briquette strength and reduced the amount of binder needed. Oxidation resistance of briquettes and raw material pellets was compared in open air and at high temperatures. Briquettes showed superior oxidation resistance.

THE MgCu2 type Laves phase has been observed in the thorium-osmium and thorium-iridium systems. Two alloys corresponding to ThOs2 and ThIr, were prepared by arc melting a 5-g charge in a water-cooled copper. crucible. Both alloys were very brittle. X-ray diffraction patterns were obtained using filtered Cu and Co radiation with a Straumanis-type DeBye-Scherrer camera. The a,, values as shown in Table I were obtained by a Nelson-Riley extrapolation. The structure belongs to space group Oh7-Fd3m. Relative intensities for each of these compounds were calculated on the assumption that 8 thorium atoms occupy (a) positions and 16 osmium or irid-ium atoms occupy (d) positions. Trend-surface equations are proposed for volumetric coal estimation in collieries of Sydney Coalfield, Nova Scotia. The statistical technique was first tried on Harbour coal in #20 Colliery investigating resulting residuals for abnormalities. The trend model is accepted as probably being correct as a result of that investigation. Indeed, higher degree polynomial trend- surfaces account for over 80% of the total map variability; these are encouraging statistical results, backed-up by geological knowledge about the coal seam, suggesting that the trend model has economic significance for an off-shore colliery developed to exploit the Harbour coal several kilometers east of #20 Colliery. Specifically, the need for additional offshore drill holes for the new colliery (excepting quality assessment holes) should be considered in light of a developed estimating model for the new colliery. The trend model also finds application in coalfields structurally more complex than Sydney Coalfield.

Little information has been published concerning the actual or useful amount of energy obtained from explosives when they are used for blasting. To provide more data on this subject, 8-in. neet cement cubes were blasted in a steel plate box and the breakage energy evaluated by comparison with drop crusher results using Rittinger's," ' Kick's,%nd Bond's' theories. Theories by Bond and Wang," Lineau,' Hatch,' Roller," and others were not considered applicable. Those used in this investigation may be expressed mathematically as follows: [ ] The above equations were employed to determine values of KK, K for particle size distributions similar to those obtained from the blasting curves. These values were in turn used as a means of approximating the specific energy of the blasted material. The efficiency of crushing by blasting was then determined by dividing this specific energy by the maximum available work of the explosive per gram of cement.

In 1970, the federal Clean Air Act was passed, promulgating limits on the emissions of sulfur dioxide (SO2) from large stationary sources that would affect local air quality. The brunt of this regulation was felt by the electric utility industry, especially those units generating electricity with coal-fired boilers. The law hastened development of a new industry, flue gas desulfurization (FGD), which is composed of three major segments: the electric utility, the FGD equipment suppliers (the scrubbing modules), and the scrubbing chemical suppliers. Dravo's experience suggested the equipment end of the business, but market analysis recommended investigating the chemical processes involved in the removal of the SO2 gas. This resulted in the formation of Dravo Lime Co. to manufacture and market reagents to the FGD industry. This paper will briefly describe the Thiosorbic lime scrubbing process and review Dravo's innovative mine and calcining facility.

In recent years, the importance of slag control in basic open-hearth operations has been universally recognized. To effect such control during the working period of the heat, methods have been developed to measure or estimate slag oxidation and slag basicity. While satisfactory rapid chemical methods have been developed to determine slag oxidation, no completely adequate method of evaluating basicity has yet been provided. The most generally accepted control methods of measuring slag basicity are based on visual cstimates. While considerable benefit may be derived from such estimates, the need for some measurable indication of slag basicity has become increasingly apparent. In a recent paper, Philbrook and Jolly suggested a promising technique for making the basicity determination. Their method consists of measuring the pH of a mixture of powdered open-hearth slag and distilled water. It was found that a relation could be established between the slag basicity and the alkalinity of the water mixture as measured by the hydrogen-ion concentration. The general procedure followed in making the measurements and the considerations involved in constructing the original curves are given in the paper of Philbrook and Jolly and need not be repeated. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss some of the factors considered in applying the pH measurements to actual slag control and to present some of the results of its apphcation. Factors Involved in Measuring pH of Water-slag Mixtures To facilitate the application of the pH control system, it was desirable that no alteration be made in the routine methods of sampling and crushing the furnace slag. Some of the factors considered before establishing a curve to relate slag basicity with the pH reading arc reviewed individually in the following paragraphs. Effect of Cooling Rate Under actual operating conditions there can be considerable variation in the temperature of the piece of slag crushed for the pH determination. To determine whether variations in crushing temperature or in cooling rate would affect the pH reading, a series of four samples was prepared from each of two separate slags. These samples represented conditions far more extreme than would actually be encountered. To obtain these samples, a thick pancake of slag was poured. One piece of this pancake was crushed immediately after it had solidified. Another piece was water-quenched and then crushed. The authors enumerate the factors which appear, from their observations and practical experience of failure of aircraft components in Great Britain, to be responsible for causing a metal or alloy to fail by stress corrosion. The essential conditions for promoting failure by stress corrosion are: (I) tensile stress at the surface of the component, (either residual or applied), and (2) an attacking medium that may be a solution or a liquid metal. Particular attacking agents are effective only on certain metals. In all instances of stress-corrosion failure experienced, cracking of an intercrystalline form has occurred and examples of such failure in aluminum alloy, steel and copper alloys are described and illustrated. The relation between microstructure and stress corrosion is mentioned and methods of investigating the susceptibility to stress-corrosion failure of metallic materials are described. The precautions to be taken in selecting materials for particular aircraft components and the importance of adequate protection against chemical attack are considered. The authors have given a factual survey of stress corrosion and have made no attempt to advance any scientific explanation of the phenomenon.

WEIGEL 20] Introduction-Grouting in Mines By definition the word "grout" means a thin mortar, or a kind of plaster or cement, and "grouting" means to fill up or finish with grout. The words "cement," "plaster" and "mortar" mean a substance that is used in a soft state which subsequently hardens. Thus, grouting is the filling of void space with a substance that hardens. Construction cements are the most common substances used, either by themselves or in mixtures, but the term grouting is applied quite correctly when other substances such as plastics and certain chemicals are used. Also, the use of the term grouting to cover the filling of voids with materials that do not actually become hard, such as the flotation tailings used in grouting in the southeast Missouri lead district, should be considered correct, as some stiffening does take place and, anyway, it is a better descriptive term than any substitute. Engineers are interested in grouting because some of the materials with which they must work contain voids, and certain conditions can be improved if these voids can be filled with something solid and permanent. Grouting is done to accomplish several purposes: I. To stop the passage of fluids and gases, 2. To cement materials together to make them stronger, and 3. To prevent consolidation of materials by filling void space with something solid as a replacement for the air and water that could be forced out under load. The construction industry uses grouting extensively for all three purposes. Grouting is used to stop water percolation under and around dams. It is used to control water flow in tunnel driving and in shaft sinking. It is used to improve foundation conditions under civil engineering structures by permanently filling void space and thereby reducing settlement, or by cementing broken rock together and increasing its supporting strength. The oil and gas industry does a lot of grouting, primarily to stop the passage of gases and fluids. The search for oil at increasingly greater depths has meant greater investment per well, and the oil industry has spent large sums on development of improved drilling methods. This
