The upswing in the price of gold in 1979 prompted renewed interest in the Mercur gold property by Getty Oil Company, owner and operator, and Gold Standard Inc. of Salt Lake City, Utah, currently retaining a 15% net profits interest. Extensive geological exploration work resumed to delineate the ore reserves, and metallurgical test work was initiated under the direction of A.H. Ross & Associates. This led to the development of an aqueous pressure oxidation process suitable for treatment of the refractory ores. Subsequent geostatistical studies revealed that the distribution of high refractory ore was less than previously estimated, and thus a higher return on investment could be realized if a direct carbon-in-leach process were used despite a sacrifice in overall recovery. This paper reviews the geological and metallurgical studies that led to this final process selection.

An understanding of the nature of yield zones surrounding coal mine excavations is fundamental to the design of mine support systems. Various methods have been designed for investigation of underground rock masses and an extensometric technique, the Magnetic Rod Extensometer, has been developed to overcome inherent design limitations in existing equipment of this type. This paper refers to the prototype form of the extensometer and details changes designed to overcome a variety of drawbacks indicated by routine use of the equipment. The principal change has been one of manual to computerised data acquisition and presentation in the laboratory phase of the system. This has dramatically reduced the time taken to process underground measurements and produce numerical and graphical results. The revised Magnetic Rod Extensometer represents an integrated instrumentation system that combines speed and accuracy in all areas of data handling.

Awakened public interest in efforts to conserve natural resources will certainly be appreciated by the members of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, and a discussion upon conservation may well form a part of one of the Institute meetings, for the records of papers and discussions which appear in the 38 volumes of its Transactions are replete with evidence of efforts in this direction. Every process which reduces the fuel consumed or the power applied per unit of product; every utilization of waste material, or employment of that formerly rejected, to obtain something of value; every feature of construction or operation which lessens the labor required or increases the output per employee, is an advance in the direction of true conservation. It is of common knowledge that loading within a grinding mill, whether ball, rod, pebble, or autogenous, is directly related to the lubrication back pressure developed between the mill journal and bearing shoe during mill operation. The merits of both forced-feed and gravitational-feed bearing lubrication methods are discussed with particular emphasis directed toward their applicability to continuous grinding mill inventory control. Data obtained from wet grinding mill applications in the cement and mining industries is presented to more clearly define the influence of such variables as feed consistency, slurry viscosity, mill retention, bearing oil temperature, grind fineness, and grinding media wear on the measured journal lubrication back pressure during automatic mill feed control. Finally, various grinding mill control schemes for maintaining constant mill loading and consequently optimizing mill operating efficiency are discussed and evaluated as to their advantages and/or disadvantages.

Effective methods for determining grade and reserves of pegmatites in advance of mining have been developed in recent years. When intensive work began on the economic geology of pegmatites during the early years of World War II, it was widely believed that grade and reserves could be estimated only in a most general way. The literature indicated that not all pegmatite deposits are unpredictable, but statements emphasizing unpredictability and irregularity seem to have been more widely accepted. Many standard references reflect the prevailing opinion that minerals are unsystematic in their occurrence in pegmatites. Pegmatites have been de- scribed as "notorious for their irregular structure," and minerals within pegmatites as "irregularly distributed," "irregularly disseminated,'' of "erratic occurrence," "proverbially erratic in distribution," "characterized by extreme irregularity in size and distribution of the essential minerals, and variety and proportion of the accessory minerals, and "spotty."

Alexander Forsyth, Southport, Me. (communication to the Secretary): In Mr. Irving's able and interesting paper he describes minutely the appearance of the wolframite and its association with the refractory siliceous gold-ore. He also describes this gold-ore, but fails to mention the important pockets of metallic gold found in the Lead City occurrence of it. I use the term " metallic " in preference to the more usual " free," for it has been found that this gold is not easily amalgamated. Metallic gold is comparatively rare in the refractory siliceous gold-ores of the Black Hills; hence its occurrence in considerable amounts in the Lead City wolframite district deserves notice. I possess a beautiful specimen from the Harrison mine. It is a lump of drusy, granular ore, about 6 in. in diameter. The gold .is " shot" through it in large and small pin-heads; and in two specially oxidized areas, each about 11/2 in. in diameter, it is peppered full. The famous " Grantz strike," made in the Lead City wolframite locality, produced many beautiful gold specimens. This district affords an excellent example of the repeated discovery of new mineral values upon old ground. By reason of its proximity to the Homestake vein, this wolframite deposit was inevitably traversed many times by experienced geologists, mineralogists and mining engineers, who evidently must have thrown aside, with no thought of wolframite, the lumps of " black iron " lying about. I have the admission of an able geologist that, six months before the wolframite was discovered, he visited some of the very mines where it occurred, and passed it by as magnetic iron-ore. UNDERGRADUATES in mining engineering may be prepared for work by giving them sound instruction in the courses generally considered essential to the profession. The industry is not deeply concerned about the details of those courses. The average man in the coal industry does not wish to insist upon a rigid program. Therefore, he differs little from those in the teaching profession-who evidently are not unanimous in their opinions, or all college catalogs would be alike. For the good of the profession, it is just as well that there should be differences in regard to details. It appears that students graduating in mining engineering from the accredited institutions receive similar instruction.

THE earliest accounts we have of Japan represent the country as having great mineral wealth, especially of precious and useful metals. Marco Polo, the Venetian traveller, in the thirteenth century, writes of "Zipangu:” "They have gold in greatest abundance, its sources being inexhaustible. The king does not allow of its being exported. To this circumstance we are to attribute the extraordinary richness of the sovereign's palace. The entire roof is covered with a plating of gold. . . . The ceilings of the halls are of the same precious metal ; many of the apartments have tables of pure gold of considerable thickness, and the windows also have golden ornaments." Marco Polo also gives an account of an unsuccessful Tartar expedition against Japan, prompted by the supposed great wealth of the country. Columbus also, as well as many other explorers, were attracted and encouraged by these prevalent reports of the wealth of the islands of Zipangu. Kaempfer, writing in 1727, speaks of the great mineral wealth of Japan, and especially of the abundance of gold, which, he says, is found in many provinces. The Portuguese and Dutch, while they had trading-posts in Japan, furnished tangible evidence of the truth of the early reports. Between 1550 and 1639 the Portuguese merchants sent home from Japan nearly three hundred million dollars' worth of bullion, most of which was gold. As the relative value of equal weights of gold and silver was then six to one, while in Europe, at the same time, it was nearly twelve to one, the exchange of silver bullion for gold was by no means an unimportant part of their business. After the Portuguese, the Dutch continued the exportation of bullion, and the exchange of silver for gold, though with less profit, as the relative value of gold increased with the demand. Between 1649 and 1671 the Dutch traders sent home over two hundred million dollars in bullion, of which, however, nearly two-thirds was silver. In 1671 the Japanese government, alarmed at the rapid rate at which the precious metals were leaving the country, issued an edict forbidding the exportation of gold or silver, under heavy penalties, which had the immediate effect of stopping this trade. In a recent paper, Floreen and Hayden report that additions of the noble metals iridium, rhodium, ruthenium, and platinum to Fe-C alloys containing 0.03 to 0.08 wt pct C act to significantly reduce the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature in a notched-bar impact test. They compare these results with the similar, well-known effects of nickel and manganese additions, and they note that this supports the hypothesis that addition of austenite stabilizers enhances notch toughness. Although not attempting to offer an explanation for this, they suggest that it might be found in an alteration of the bonding characteristics of the bcc lattice of iron by additions of elements which tend to stabilize the fcc lattice. While this suggestion appears to have some merit, it should perhaps be held in abeyance until two more likely possibilities have been explored. It is now fairly clear that the beneficial effect of manganese derives from its ability to promote a globular carbide morphology instead of the platelike form found in grain boundaries and pearlite patches in Fe-C al10~s.' Previous work14 has also shown that cleavage fracture in Fe-C alloys of the type tested by Floreen and Hayden originates almost exclusively in the cracking of cementite platelets, and that the ductile-brittle transition temperature is very sensitive to the volume density and size of these carbides. Treatments which lead to development of nonlamellar carbides or fine dispersions of carbides, such as quenching and tempering or appropriate alloy additions, promote toughness by removing the primary mode of cleavage initiation. The effectiveness of manganese in this regard has long been known. Nickel appears to behave in a similar manner, though the effect is perhaps not as dramatic as with manganese.15 However, nickel additions do lead to a definite refinement of ferrite grain size following a given transformation heat treatment, and this in itself acts to greatly enhance notch toughness.'' (The grain sizes of the various heats tested by Floreen and Hayden were not reported, so it is not known how much influence this factor exerted in their results.) In conclusion, it is suggested that one should consider the well-established effects of alloying elements on carbide morphology and ferrite grain size before resorting to more complex possibilities, such as modification of interatomic bonding.

Y.:-The engineers of the country are waking up to the possibilities of waste-heat boilers. As the cost of fuel increases, and as more attention is given to economies, it is evident that a great deal may lie gained by utilizing heat that has ordinarily been wasted. The art in the manufacture of' waste-heat boilers has. advanced so that it will now pay to install them under certain conditions where it would not have paid to install boilers constructed in accordance with older methods. In using boilers where the gases are at a comparatively low temperature, a great deal depends on the method of baffling the boiler in securing good results. The Babcock & Wilcox Co. has made a careful investigation of the laws of heat transfer and has applied the same to waste-heat boilers, which have been carefully tested under operating conditions, with the result that we now know what to expect with different arrangements of baffles and heating surfaces. The old idea of installing waste-heat boilers was to provide an arrangement where the draft loss would be a minimum, and little or no attention was paid to the effect of different systems of baffling on the steaming capacity of the boiler. In some instances, to secure a minimum draft loss no baffles were placed in the boilers. After making a most careful study of the subject it developed that this practice was bad, and that to obtain the best commercial economy, in place of endeavoring to obtain a minimum draft loss, an arrangement should be used that would lead to the maximum amount of heat transmission with a comparatively high draft loss. In nearly every case the amount of resistance of the gases fussing through the boiler involves the use of an induced-draft ,fan, but the additional capacity developed by the boiler over that which could be secured with the older designs, through arranging the heating surface properly and using proper baffles, much more than pays for the increase in the steam required to drive the fan.

Chapters 5a, 5b, and 6 discuss the long- run supply of minerals and the characteristics of reserve search and production peculiar to extractive industries. It is now necessary to complete the picture by examining supply and demand in commodity markets to show how mineral prices are determined and how both price and production trends might be predicted over long periods of time. These practical interests can be served best by reviewing first some of the characteristics of the short-run static market models familiar to all readers of elementary economic texts, and then extending the theory to models of a more dynamic nature. It is important at the outset to note that economic theory provides a wide variety of economic models based on varying assumptions concerning the behavior of economic agents, the properties of the goods, the time period considered, and so on. Each variety of model offers certain analytical advantages and suffers certain shortcomings. The art of the applied economist or practioner lies in knowing enough both about the technology and practice of his problem and about theory to select the appropriate models for his analysis. In our approach it will be useful first to consider the role of markets for minerals and mineral products in relation to the efficient determination of what and how goods are produced in the whole economy, i.e., a general system of markets, before getting down to the task of analyzing supply and demand conditions in specific markets. The former study is called general equilibrium analysis, while the latter is called partial. By equilibrium is meant a state of the sys- tem under study in which supply equals demand in each market, and the prices which equilibrate the quantities offered and asked are called equilibrium prices. The tendency of prices to return toward equilibrium values if temporarily displaced, or to converge to new equilibrium values if important new conditions for supply or for demand are placed, defines "stable" equilibrium systems. The short-run describes a period in which adjustments to fixed capital are not made, although variable factors such as labor or materials can be adjusted. The long-run envisions a period in which fixed capital and other such constraints can be adjusted. Thus, it may take a sharp increase in price to bring out additional supply of a factor in the short-run with existing plant, while new capacity might permit additional quantities in the long-run without an increase in supply price.

The fluid level maintained in wells pumped for oil is an important factor in deter-mining their productivity but one that has received little attention in the literature relating to petroleum-production technology. In the present paper the writer undertakes to show how and to what extent fluid level influences productivity and suggests the use of a fluid level indicator as an aid to the oil producer in maintaining the fluid surface within the well at the proper position. IT is realized that the depth of fluid maintained in a pumping well is sometimes influenced by other considerations than the quantity of fluid that will enter the well: the prevention of sand incursion, prevention of waste of natural gas, and the maintenance of a suitable submergence for the pump, for example. These latter factors have an important influence on the productivity of the well, so that otherwise unwarranted fluid levels must sometimes be maintained to offset them; but where the handling of unconsolidated sands is not a problem of consequence and where water has been properly excluded, the principles developed here and the practices recommended, should apply. The principal objective of the producer should be to produce the maximum quantity of oil in the shortest possible time. Any method or equipment that will increase the rate of production during the early years of the life of the well, when gas pressure is high, will greatly augment the .ultimate production. The maintenance of a proper fluid level in the well at all times will go far toward accomplishing this desired result. For a given set of conditions surrounding the flow of oil into a particular well, in which the viscosity of the oil, the porosity and grain size, of the sand, and the diameter of the well appear as constants, two variables determine the quantity of oil that will flow from the sand into the well. These are: the effective pressure behind or within the oil in the reservoir sand, and the fluid level maintained within the well.. The former is the expulsive force that causes movement of oil from the sand into the well, while the latter determines the magnitude of a resisting force opposing such movement. The first of these factors is largely beyond the control of the oil producer, but it is in his interest to reduce the opposing force to the lowest economic limit.

Industry has for many years recognized the dependence of certain mechanical and physical properties. as well as workability, upon grain size variations in brass. Although the dependence of properties upon grain size has been recognized there are not many instances where a planned program of testing has been conducted and where the only intentional variable has been grain size. In particular the literature is limited with respect to the effect of grain size on the endurance limit, though there are many industrial applications where the brasses are subjected to cycles of repetitive stresses. Literature A number of the physical and mechanical properties of a given brass sheet, in the annealed condition, will depend upon: (I) The ready-to-finish grain size before final rolling, (2) the percentage deformation by cold working, and (3) the time and temperature of annealing. The first and second variables affect the recrystallized grain size, and the third variable affects the coalesced grain size. Gibbsl has shown the effect of two different ready-to-finish grain sizes upon the tensile strength and hardness of deep drawing brass strip after a definite amount of cold rolling. The smaller the ready-to-finish grain size, the higher the tensile strength and hardness, but with lowered ductility, Gibbs also demonstrated, for a given time and temperature of anneal, that the tensile strength, hardness, and elastic limit are higher for the smaller ready-to-finish grain size, but the elongation is lowered. Townsend and Greena112 have reported data which show that cold working increases the tensile strength, hardness, and load carrying ability of deep drawing brass sheet under reversed stress. Greenall and Gohn3 have reported data which show that the smaller grain sizes have higher tensile strength and hardness properties, and the data also show that increased cold working increases the tensile strength and hardness properties of deep drawing brass sheet. Kommers4 has reported data for tests of brass of known ready-to-finish grain size, a specific amount of cold reduction, and annealed at different temperatures above and below the recrystallization temperature. Kommers' results indicate that annealing below the recrystallization temperature does not change the tensile strength and hardness properties, but the endurance limit may be increased from 22,000 to 28,000 psi. Introduction The primary ingredient for survival of mining companies during a recessionary period is to be innovative and resourceful in the structuring and financing of operations. Over the past decade, many mining companies have had to retrench and restructure their operations and to redeploy their assets just to survive. During the same period, traditional sources of financing for mining companies -- commercial banks, subsidized export credit loans and long term straight debt financing in the public markets -- became less available and more expensive. Meanwhile, new markets and new financing instruments provided new alternatives for mining companies. Those companies which exploited these alternatives greatly enhanced their capacity for survival and even for profitability. This article considers the strategies adopted by some companies to adapt to changes in this recessionary environment; the inadequacy of traditional sources of financing; certain of the new financing instruments, structures and markets which have become available; and how several mining companies have utilized these new instruments, structures and financial markets to improve their competitive positions. THE IMPACT OF RECESSION ON MINING COMPANIES AND TRADITIONAL FINANCING SOURCES In its 1983 year-end article "The New Economic Order" Mining Journal characterized many of the large private sector mining companies with operations in the industrialized countries as being "gripped between the jaws of high working costs and stagnating metal commodity prices." The article went on to characterize the Canadian mining industry in particular as being "in the difficult position of having to seek to sell the bulk of its output in a world market characterized by over-capacity, where production costs were determined by internal political and economic factors while prices were set by external competitive forces of supply and demand." Miners of a wide range of commodities in the industrialized countries have come to realize that their domestic mineral resources are in many cases no longer competitive with global sources of supply. To compete and survive they would have to rely on their technical and financial expertise in mineral exploration and development and in mining and processing. Strategies For Survival Global competition has compelled management in the extractive industries to improve their worldwide cost position. This is the only means whereby a mining company can differentiate its product and attain a substantial competitive advantage. During the past decade, for example, ASARCO Inc. and Inco Ltd. chopped their payrolls, postponed expansion plans and otherwise retrenched. ASARCO reduced its capital expenditures and cash requirements for operations in 1984 to a level almost equal to its internally generated cash. The company's finances were also strengthened by increasing total lines of credit from outside sources, by selling common stock, and by reducing annual pension funding through a change in actuarial assumptions. Other companies returned to their traditional organizational structure where they had a demonstrated competitive strength. Consolidated Gold Fields, for instance, resumed its operation as a mining finance house. Its capital investment programs are now devoted solely to resource development. In mid-1984, at a time of firming zinc prices, Union Miniere S.A. used the opportunity to integrate its smelting capacity and to direct investment to certain subsidiaries at the expense of less viable operations. Smaller corporations realized that it was not enough just to be the low-cost producer. For example, Drummond Coal Company in Alabama, which dominates its regional market due to its low-costs, has also developed a world-wide trading capability and has placed incremental tonnage from its own mines as well as brokered coal produced by others, thereby minimizing capital risk. In Canada, Campbell Resources has exploited difficult times by acquiring assets cheaply. In the process it improved its capacity to withstand cyclical economic swings by diversifying from solely a copper and gold producer to a company based upon asbestos, coal, copper, gold and natural gas.

The maintenance cost, or renewal cost, in any preparation plant is a large item of expense and reflects in the total cost of producing and preparing the ton of coal. It is given constant study to the end that ways and means of controlling and reducing this proportion of the total cost may be developed. Study of this item of cost has proceeded along usual lines, which are: proper functioning of the maintenance organization; systematic and thorough inspection to prevent breakdonns; the making of repairs before renewals are needed; maintenance work done thoroughly the first time, instead of patching, study of parts needing frequent renewal or repairs or conditions resulting in delays, thorough knowledge of cost by the mall responsible for maintenance; and the use of special equipment and materials. This paper is to deal with special equipment and materials to reduce the maintenance cost hut before going into that I want to express an opinion on the general subject. Maintenance Organization Usually maintenance is taken care of by a group of men who perform their work on the off shift. The work is arranged by the operating official who should be thoroughly familiar with maintenance, so that materials needed may be made up for the particular job and waste of time in looking up materials be prevented. To perfect the maintenance organization, all operating attendants should be thoroughly trained to be familiar with all working parts of their equipment, to make a thorough inspection and to write out the slip for the work required. This requires job analysis, but it is worth the effort, because the attendant usually is better informed than anyone else about his particular equipment. The operating official can judge the scope of the work to direct the repair and to have material ready. Lubrication is an important item in maintenance, and a subject by itself. Usually the breaker oiler is designated to perform this task. This man should be picked for his ability and put in line for promotion to machinist. He should be trained as an inspector, as he is constantly visiting most parts of the breaker and has an opportunity to observe needed maintenance. The first thing is to lay out maintenance work and arrange to have it done; the next is to check the work and see that it has been properly done. This check should be made by the operating official, and through the attendant. The cost statement showing the various items of maintenance cost is not often understood by the man in direct charge. The fluorescence of scheelite has been an important aid in recent years in the discovery and development of scheelite deposits. The use of fluorescence of synthetic compounds in industry, particularly in advertising, also has expanded greatly during the past decade. As a result, a number of new and convenient units for producing ultraviolet energy have become available, which have led to a greater application of fluorescence in the study of minerals. Studies have shown that the fluorescent color of a mineral may vary: (I) with the kind and quantity of trace elements, and (2) with the particular wave length of ultraviolet energy used. The wave length is dependent first on the type of generating equipment used, and finally on the filter employed to remove the visible light that may be present. A number of so-called ultraviolet lamps are listed and described, together with suitable filters known to be available. The fluorescence of scheelite has been an important aid in recent years in the discovery and development of scheelite deposits. The use of fluorescence of synthetic compounds in industry, particularly in advertising, also has expanded greatly during the past decade. As a result, a number of new and convenient units for producing ultraviolet energy have become available, which have led to a greater application of fluorescence in the study of minerals. Studies have shown that the fluorescent color of a mineral may vary: (I) with the kind and quantity of trace elements, and (2) with the particular wave length of ultraviolet energy used. The wave length is dependent first on the type of generating equipment used, and finally on the filter employed to remove the visible light that may be present. A number of so-called ultraviolet lamps are listed and described, together with suitable filters known to be available. Recently reported high -temperatlnre thermal data have been incorporated in a reuieu' of the therinody-r~ar,zic propesties of iron. The recent data permit mot corlsisterlt and reliuble choices to be made for many of the pvoperties, resnlling in bettev eslablished tabrtlations of the thermodynamic functions. Values of Cp, h°t- - H°298. s°t - S2sa, and (G°T -H298/T are tabulated for -the solid and liquid phases of iron in both stable and melastable regions. Consistency of the tabulations has been maintained to the precision necessr~vg to yield the Gibbs energy change belween the bcc (a, 8) and fcc (y) phases of iron at temperatures pertinenl to alloy studies. THE importance of the metal iron has stimulated many investigations of its thermodynamic properties at elevated temperatures. Reviews and summaries of the data have appeared from time to time. Among these the 1951 paper of Darken and smith' deserves highest recognition for the quality of its criticism and for the precision and thermodynamic consistency of its tabulations. These and the more recent table of Kaufman, Clougherty, and weiss2 reproduce the Gibbs energy of the (a, 6)--Y transformation with sufficient sensitivity for alloy studies. Other recent compilations of equal validity3-' make no attempt to do this. Since this Gibbs energy change is not greater than 22 cal per g-atom over the temperature range 1100° to 1800°K, it is obviously desirable to tabulate values of (G°t - H298)/T to four places of decimals even though the absolute accuracy would not warrant such precision. The necessity for reconsideration of the problem is emphasized by the recent publication of several important researches on the enthalpy and heat capacity of iron. The older work is well-covered in the reviews cited and will be mentioned here only when actually employed in the tabulations. GAMMA IRON Transition temperatures are taken from the selec -tions of Elliott and Gleiser,5 based on the work of Boulanger7 and earlier workers. For the a-y (A3) transition at 1184°K we retain the value 215 cal per g-atom adopted by Darken and smith.' It has received confirmation in the recent work of Dench and Kubaschewski,' and of Braun8 using adiabatic calori-metry, and of Wallace, Sidles, and Danielson10 using a pulse heating technique. The enthalpy data of Olette and ferrier" and of Anderson and Hultgren12 at higher and lower temperatures may be extended to 1184°K to give the following values which are adjusted to the required value of ? 1184 Ha,1184 Ha 298 = 8030 cal per g-atom [11 hr,1184-ha298 = 8245 cal per g-atom [2]
