In the upgrading of finely disseminated iron ores, selective desliming is the critical step that must be controlled to achieve efficient flotation. A prerequisite for selective desliming is a properly-dispersed pulp; sodium silicate is commonly used as a dispersant. The mechanism by which sodium silicate acts as a dispersant in the presence of calcium ions was examined by streaming potential measurements, settling tests, abstraction density determinations, selective flocculation tests, and scanning electron microscope observations. The study established that calcium silicate precipitates on the mineral surfaces dispersed the pulp. Although sodium silicate was a nonselective dispersant, the addition of corn starch aided flocculation of goethite over quartz at low silicate additions, but became ineffective at higher silicate levels. A model is presented to explain the dispersant mechanism of sodium silicate in the presence of calcium ion for selective flocculation of iron ores.

THIS paper reports a study of the reactivity of 950°F and 1650°F cokes as measured by relative rates of reduction of iron oxides at temperatures up to 2200°F. Previous work cited shows general acceptance of the theory that reduction by carbon is a gaseous reaction, and that kind and character of carbon as well as particle size have measurable effect on the velocity of reaction. As will be shown, the data obtained in this study con firm those conclusions. The work was not designed to examine iron oxide reduction equilibrium, but if reaction velocity be defined as the speed with which "a reaction tends to approach conditions of equilibrium," the data here presented may be considered as a study of reaction rates, and the relative degree of reduction to metallic iron as the measure of reactivity.

I DES~RE to call the attention of the Institute to two deep vertical shafts, which are now being sunk in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, about miles north of Pottsville. These shafts are of interest to the mining engineer, not only on account of the novelty of the method of sinking adopted, which promises to produce a revolution in that branch of mining engineering, but also as examples of the manner in which such work should be undertaken. GEOLOGICAL SKETCH OF THE TERRITORY TO BE WORKED BY THE SHAFTS AND REASON FOR SINKING THEM. The Mammoth or E Vein of the anthracite coal-measures in that part of the Schuylkill region near and north of the town of Pottsville lies at a great depth below the surface, and has, in consequence, never been worked in that locality.

Few people in the industry today are competent to comment on the O.G. system for vessel covers, but with papers as well prepared as Mr. Bradley's we will soon be well informed. I would like to direct these comments to Mr. Klaes of Ford Motor Company. Mr. Klaes' description of their steaming hood agrees with our experience at Weirton. We have been able to stay within design limits and, as a result, have had few problems with our auxiliary equipment. Our main problem, as with Ford, has been thinning of our vessel cover tubes. At Weirton, controlled circulation, high pressure boilers are in use as heat recovery units above the BOP vessels. The boilers are provided with "off cycle' oil firing equipment. A Venturi type wet gas scrubber follows the boiler to complete the vessel draft system.

When I presented at the Chicago Meeting of the Institute, in May, 1884, a paper on Hadfield's manganese steel,* which had about that time been brought to the notice of steel manufacturers, I promised to furnish some physical tests of the steel for publication in the Transactions. The fulfilment of the promise then made has been delayed by various circumstances; but I have recently been put in possession of tests of this steel carefully made at the Woolwich, England, arsenal. Messrs. Hadfield & Co. prepared for the arsenal a series of twelve test-pieces, made from the same heat. An analysis of the steel gave the following results: Carbon,.........73 Silicon,.........37 Sulphur,.........06 Phosphorus,. .08 Manganese,...... 9.83 The test-pieces had been heated to a white heat and plunged into cold water prior to being put into the machine. France.—Pechelbronn remains about the only producing field, 41 per cent of the 1937 output of 496,525 bbl. being mined by shaft and 59 per cent produced from pumping wells. At present Gabian has only a very small production. During 1937 there was no private undertaking for petroleum research. Only the Office National des Combustibles Liquides has done any drilling, unsuccessfully, at Pezenas and Frangy-Chilly. Algeria.—No new research has been made and Tliouanet, a small acreage pool that has been declining for several years, gave only 2193 bbl. in 1937. Replacement of active groups in corn starch, as shown by results of the starch derivatives tested, impairs rather than improves the value of corn starch as a selective iron oxide depressant. Increased ability to depress iron oxides is generally accompanied by a parallel ability to depress quartz. PEARL starch, a corn starch prepared with a minimum of alteration, is a good selective depressant for iron oxide minerals.' From what is known of the complex chemistry of corn starch, there is evidence that it consists of a mixture of saturated giant polymeric molecules, both straight and branch-chained, the constituents consisting of glucose units with hydroxyl radicals as active or polar groups. Since its introduction several years ago in the United States, the high pressure belt filter press has proven to be a highly cost-effective dewatering device in a number of mining and industrial applications. To evaluate the process and economic factors associated with the dewatering of coal refuse, a comprehensive program of laboratory and on-site pilot studies has been conducted. This paper will summarize findings of this study and discuss advantages of the belt filter press over conventional dewatering methods. The conventional means of dewatering thickened coal refuse involves the use of vacuum disc filters or centrifuges. Due to the high amount of energy used to dewater refuse with these devices it was a logical course of action to apply belt filter press technology to this application, since a belt filter press will require less than 3.7 kW (connected).

A method of accurately determining the value of gold-bearing ores and gravels with a compact field-outfit is much desired by prospectors, especially when the work lies in a district far removed from railways or good wagon-roads. We are all familiar with the fire-assay of gold-ores, and fully recognize its accuracy and value; but only those who have tried to determine the value of a gold-bearing vein as a commercial venture, from fire-assays of selected samples, know how misleading is the information thus obtained, however carefully and honestly the samples may be selected. The pressures of urbanization are forcing producers of construction minerals either to transport their product greater distances or find new mineral sources. In areas with significant urban development near the coastal zone, offshore resources may prove to be an economically attractive alternative source. This paper addresses the economic viability of offshore mining of fine mineral aggregate. It proposes a model using a mathematical programming formulation based upon past research on both the onshore construction aggregate industry and the coal industry. The model is then used to assess offshore mining economics in the greater New York metropolitan area. Results show that in this region total consumer cost would be reduced by offshore mining of fine aggregate. In addition, increasing economies of scale could be realized by progressively larger mining operations. The distribution of these savings is also discussed.

Government and labor sources have speculated that exposure to diesel exhaust may have adverse health consequences. The purpose of this discussion is to analyze the merits of these statements and place them in perspective to underground mining. It would be ideal to eliminate exposure to all substances until they are proven safe. This is impossible, since nothing can be proven safe. Rather, one must extrapolate by using the best available scientific information to make reasonable judgements and decisions. It makes little sense to ensure that a mine atmosphere maintains a lower concentration of a substance than that allowed for ambient environments. Such regulations are set at more stringent levels than those tolerated in the occupational work place. However, levels of pollutants that are in excess of concentrations tolerated in the work place would not be appropriate in any environment.

Zinc oxide, an n-type semiconductor, and nickel oxide, a p-type semiconductor, were studied in electrostatic separation experiments in pure and doped forms. In addition, pure potassium chloride and potassium chloride containing one volume per cent silver were also investigated. It was found, in agreement with theory, that the presence of dopants in the oxides could either increase or decrease the electrical conductivity of the base compounds and, thus, control the response of these particles to electrostatic separation. Further, it was shown that the same dopant in the n- and p-type semiconductors produced opposite conductivity effects; again in accord with theory. Finally, it was found that the presence of dispersed silver particles in the normally insulator phase potassium chloride produced sufficient electronic conductivity to cause the silver containing particles to respond as would materials possessing "medium-type" conductivities.

During the last few years the use of base-metal thermocouples has increased very considerably in various industries, due to the necessity for more precise control of temperatures. The base-metal couple has the advantages of being robust to a surprising degree, cheap as compared with platinum couples, sufficiently accurate for most operations, rapid in indicating changes in temperature, easily renewed or repaired, and of generating a much higher electromotive force than the noble-metal couples. There are, however, some factors, such as indicating and recording instruments, the insulation on the elements, the constancy and homogeneity of the wires, and the resistance to oxidation in the furnace, that limit the. Usefulness of the temperature-measuring device. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss in what manner these factors affect the usefulness of the couples.

For some years MINING ENGINEERING has published abstracts of the articles appearing in each issue and also of the Transactions papers published in the Quarterly. Beginning this month, a list of key words is being given with each abstract as an aid to indexing the articles for ease in retrieving them when they are needed. The value of a home or office system of indexing and retrieving technical articles is hard to over-estimate. How often is it that a technical problem comes up and someone says: "Oh yes, I've read something about that." Many hours can be expended tracing down that nebulous source. A modest indexing and retrieval system will save those tedious hours, and the person who is able to produce technical documents when they are needed will achieve an enviable status for being on the ball.

A novel process is described for the selective flotation of scheelite from low-grade (- 0.5% W03) tungsten ores having appreciable quantities of calcareous and siliceous gangue minerals. Specifically developed for the Tempiute, Nevada facility of Union Carbide, the process yields tungsten concentrates exceeding 15 percent W03 with at least 85 percent recovery. This condition was not achieved through conventional processes. This process consists of conditioning the ore pulp with judicious amounts of lime, followed by soda ash and sodium silicate as modifiers. The scheelite is then floated using a mixture of oleic and naphthenic acids as collector. Contrary to the common observation as to the deleterious effects of calcium in fatty acid flotation systems, lime addition is found to be beneficial in achieving satisfactory results. The process has also shown excellent results on a Brazilian scheelite ore.

The second underground coal gasification experiment conducted by ERDA's Laramie Energy Research Center at a site near Hanna, Wyo., was completed on Jul. 30, 1976. During the experiment production reached 0.32 blm3/d (12 M cu ft/d) of 6.9 w/m3 gas (175 Btu per cu ft). Approximately 6100 tonnes (6700 tons) of coal were gasified during the experiment. Energy return ratios of 4.5 to 5.3, coal gas thermal efficiencies of 76 to 89%, and overall process efficiencies of 65 to 74% were achieved during the second Hanna experiment. This paper describes the experiment and the results obtained with emphasis given to the determination of the energy recovered relative to energy consumed in conducting the test. Data from this determination are compared with previously published data from the first test conducted at Hanna during 1973-74.

In Part I of this article, published in the September issue of MINING ENGINEERING, Edward S. Frohling and Robert M. McGeorge of Mountain States Mineral Enterprises, Inc., reviewed the general overall financial aspects and methods of raising the necessary capital for developing the mine. In Part 2 of this two-article series, we will present several case histories to show how realistic feasibility studies are used for evaluating the choices and options entailed in mining ventures. Basically, after a potential ore body has been discovered, and the necessary funds obtained for the development of the deposit, the next major problem is one of ascertaining what specifically is to be produced, and the costs of production. The profit potential of the mining venture can then be accurately assessed by the mine owner, operator, or loan officer.

Mt. Newman Mining Co. is now completing an expansion program, begun even before initial construction was complete, which will result in the ability to ship up to 35 million tpy of iron ore by early 1973. Located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, the mine at Mt. Whaleback is about 700 road miles north of Perth and 265 railroad miles south of the port facilities at Port Hedland. Development of the tertiary crushing and screening facilities best illustrates the orderly, but rapid, sequence through which the capacity of the port loading terminal has been expanded. When the present program is completed, crushing and shiploading capability will reach - - 35 million tpy. Operations commenced in 1969 with 3 crusher lines in service; and despite the 5-million annual ton rating, 6.46 million tons of ore were shipped during the first full year of operation. With continuing increase in ore sales, expansion to an annual capacity of 12 million tons was authorized, and installation of two more crusher lines was begun. As a part of this program, provision for installation of a sixth crusher at some future date was included in the planning; but before construction was completed, new ore sales contracts demanded further expansion to an annual rate of 20 million tons, and the sixth crusher line was authorized. The distributing and collecting conveyors had been designed for extension in length and increase in capacity, therefore, conveyor service was provided for the additional crushers with additional belting and hardware only.
