C OMMERCIAL production of oil in northeastern Oklahoma began in 1897 and in the next two decades this area became one of the greatest oil districts of the time. Its importance is now secondary, but thousands of wells in this area have produced uninterruptedly for more than thirty years. They are now classified as stripper wells. By means of what is known as water flooding their L. production can be considerably in- creased. This practice consists in injecting water under pressure into the sand surrounding an oil well, thus displacing the oil in the pores of the sand and forcing it into the oil well.

(San Francisco fleeting, October, 1911.) DURING the past two years California has developed a new and important oil-field : I refer to Midway. This field produced the famous Lake View gusher, which is credited with a total production in excess of 8,000,000 barrels. Fortunately for the oil industry of the State, this well is now a thing of the past, and nothing save a great crater-like opening marks its location. The pipe is entirely worn away and gone ; and it is a matter of serious doubt if there can be anything done that will cause the well to produce again. Fortunately, also, there have been no, other wells in that field or elsewhere throughout the State that in any way compared with the Lake View. Midway is noted for large wells, of from 500 to 2,000 barrels production; but the decline is rapid, and a few months serve to bring the output down to a few hundred barrels. In the oil-territory heretofore blocked out as proved and probable, there have been, during the year, many changes. Some areas which were expected to be fairly productive have apparently failed; others, more strictly "wild-cat," have come in; while in some of the older fields there are properties which are beginning to show evident signs of exhaustion. The total area of proved territory will therefore probably suffer but small increase, when balances are struck off. The increase of new area has come from extensions of the Midway field, the development of a field in Lost Hills and Belridge, and extensions of the Fullerton-Whittier field in southern California. In these later developments, down to date, the fresh area absolutely proved is not much in excess of 3,000 acres. Recent developments in Coalinga indicate the possible extension of that field to the south, but at great depth. Coalinga is still the most northerly field of any consequence in the State. Tinsley Oil Field.—Mississippi joined the oil-producing states when on Sept. 13, 1939, the Union Producing Company's G. C. Woodruff well No. 1, sec. 13, T. 10 N., R. 3 W., Yazoo County, was completed after drilling plug at 4540 ft. in the Woodruff sand of the Eutaw formation of Cretaceous, producing 300 bbl. per day of 34.4" gravity oil through a ¼-in. choke, with a gas-oil ratio of 80 to 1 and bottom-hole pressure of 2045 lb. This was the discovery well in the Tinsley oil field. The well was drilled to a total depth of 4567 ft. and no salt water was encountered. The sand underlies the Selma chalk formation. Nine producing oil wells and one dry hole were drilled and completed by the end of 1939. Two producing sands have been found in the Eutaw and a third sand in the top of the Tuscaloosa formation, called the Woodbine sand in Louisiana and Texas. Faulting is an important factor in the Tinsley field. Total oil production has been approximately 250,000 bbl. from the nine flowing wells. Total depth to top of productive zone was 4540 ft.; to bottoms of productive wells, 4580 ft. Net thickness of the producing formation is 20 to 40 ft., and its porosity is 24 per cent. The deepest zone tested was the Tuscaloosa, in which the depth of hole was 6112 feet. Six hundred and forty acres has been proved for oil production. Jackson Gas Field.—The Jackson gas field has shown a steady decline in the number of wells but the pressure has been maintained. This field is a perfect example of a water-driven field and the time of wells going to salt water is predictable. Five wells were drilled in the Jackson field, of which only one produced. Amory Gas Field.—Interest was renewed in the Amory gas field, where a new well was started in the fall of 1939. Geological Formations.—The deepest well drilled in 1939 was the Willmut Gas and Oil Company's Cleve Love S. F. Johnson No. 1, sec. 29, T. 6 N., R. 1 W., Hinds County. This well encountered the Lower Cretaceous, Trinity series from 3770 to 6422 ft.; Lower Mesozoic from 6422 to 6484 ft. The geological correlations and nomenclature of the formations in Mississippi are shown in the accompanying strati-graphic section.

ThE superior performance of nonsag tungsten wire in lamps has been ascribed to the large-grained micro-structure that can be developed in it. The orientations of these large grains have been studied several times; most published data1-' appear to be similar to those plotted in Fig. 1. These new data were obtained by X-ray back-reflection Laue technique from all of the large grains occurring in thirteen different wires that had been heated at the lowest possible temperature for the formation of large grains. Here the wire axis is plotted in terms of the principal directions of the cube. Rosi decided that the preferred orientation of the large crystals could be described by a single ideal orientation, (531), being parallel to the wire axis.' Rieck2,3 and Mannerkoski' have essentially confirmed this finding. Opinsky, Orehotsky, and Seigle argued that the data suggest that (211) is parallel to the wire axis instead of a single ideal orientation.5 This {211} contains the (531) ideal orientation and would appear to be a more general case. Ahlborn and Wassermann report that their orientation data stretch from ( 110) through (531) to (311) 8 This is part of the locus of (211). All these investigators have determined the orientations of the large grains by back-reflection Laue techniques. They have all obtained essentially similar results. On the other hand, Swalin and Geisler, who obtained their data by neutron diffraction, indicated that the preferred orientation of the large grains in doped wire is (110) .7 These findings cannot presently be reconciled with the pole density data described in the previous paragraph. Rosi1 and Rieck2 have advanced arguments about how their orientations could occur. Nevertheless, the crystallographic link between the (110) (cold-worked) fiber texture and the preferred orientation of the large grains has remained missing. This link can be provided through the concept of coincidence-type boundaries. Such boundaries separate two grains that have a certain number of common lattice sites. Coincidence relationships that result from rotations about low index directions are given by Brandon et a1 .' What is desired is a calculation of those orientations that bear a coincidence relationship with the (110) fibers of the cold-worked matrix. This situation arises in the following fashion. Heating the tungsten wire for a combination of time and temperature falling short of the formation of the nonsag structure yields a structure that is still fibrous in nature and the preferred orientation remains (110). During grain growth, the growing grain is in contact with these fibers. It is hence possible that the entire process may begin by the passage of a coincidence boundary into a (110) fiber. The calculations were carried out analytically and checked graphically. Following Brandon et a1.,8 coincidence relationships from 1 in 5 to 1 in 19 have been considered. The results of the calculations are given in Fig. 2. Of the coincidences examined, some of those occurring upon rotation about ( 110) come closest to the experimental points in Fig. 1. Nineteen of the twenty-three data points in Fig. 1 can be attributed to the ideal orientations A, B, C, and D in Fig. 2. As determined analytically, three crystals lie within 4 deg of point A, four lie within 21/2 deg of point B, eleven lie within 5 deg of point C, and one lies within 1 deg of point D-a total of nineteen. The off-lying points are near the |110| point of the triangle.

ALTHOUGH the situation in the oil industry during the past year has. not been conducive to large expenditures for development and research, there is little indication that such expenditures have been curtailed. While few outstanding achievements have been reported, considerable progress has been made in the development of new products and the adaptation of petroleum derivatives to new uses. The most important question facing the refiner today is the anti-knock quality of his gasoline. This year has seen the widespread adoption of the term "octane number" as a measure for anti-knock values, and in the latter months of the year the public has been made acutely aware of this condition through competitive advertising. Gaso-line is no longer priced on volatility and gravity alone, but on octane number as well; and premiums are being paid for material of relatively high octane rating. The situation has grown more and more competitive and has forced refiners continually to raise the octane rating of their regular and com-petitive grades, and at this writing the same situation exists for premium grades which have possessed relatively high anti-knock properties for some time. Straight-run gasoline produced from paraffin-base or semiparaffin-base crudes has an inherently low anti-knock value, and in order to convert this material to a higher quality it has been found necessary to crack an increasing percentage of the crude oil charge. By completely cracking the heavier portions of the crude, and blending back with the straight-run gasoline, it has been possible to produce an average of 63 to 65 octane number gasoline' on average Mid-Continent crude. This operation carried to the fullest extent does not suffice, however, and the recent and rapid development of the so-called "re-forming unit," has resulted. The straight-run gasoline fraction is cut into two parts: a light, low boiling point gasoline; and a heavy gasoline or naphtha. The latter containing the low anti-knock portions of the gasoline, is sent through a re-forming unit and subjected either to high temperature ,or pressure, or both, which materially increases its octane number. In preparing this paper the object has been to set forth facts relating to illumination problems, which, judging from the results realized in the iron and steel and other industries somewhat similar to mining, will tend toward furthering safety, production, and contentment of employees, as well as economy of operation in mines. By applying the principles of illumination with the assistance of modern appliances, the full benefits in efficiency may be derived from improvements already made in other details of mine operation. The lighting of a typical coal mine may be*divided into four distinct parts: 1, The lighting of the buildings about the top; 2, the lighting of the working faces; 3, general illumination at the bottom; and 4, special applications of lighting. The lighting of buildings about the top may be treated in the same manner as that of any other industrial plant, for we have a boiler room, an engine and generator room, a forge, a machine shop, and a hoist room. These can be well and efficiently lighted by the use of 100-watt tungsten-filament multiple lamps with proper reflectors so spaced and suspended that a power consumption of from ¼ watt per square foot in the boiler room to 1 watt per square foot in the machine shop is obtained. The methods that apply to this kind of lighting have been ably treated by a number of authors,' and for this reason a detailed discussion is unnecessary. The lighting of the working faces is usually done by means of portable lamps, of which there are four types in use: The oil torch, the acetylene Iamp, and the oil and the electric safety lamps. THE mapping of slant-hole oil fields is complicated by the fact that relationships between wells are subject to variations in three dimensions and are not readily adaptable to representation on a plane surface. Formalized perspectives usually expand into an undecipherable maze of lines and peg models with the necessary supporting dividers serve only to awe the beholder with their perplexity. The usual compromise arrived at is a plotting of the projection of the courses of all of the wells in the field onto a horizontal plane (Fig. I). These complicated plots, when used in conjunction with the individual vertical projections of the wells, heretofore have been the most practical foundation for the study of general field problems. This method has many shortcomings, however, which are not found in the recently developed straight-hole equivalent projection method. The new method supplies a series of maps similar to the type now in common use in straight-hole fields. It is remarkably simple to use and supplies a ready check on clearances between wells. Perhaps the method can best be understood if the steps that led to its development are described. Common practice of oil-well surveyors is to supply the owner with a tabling of the survey and a plan view plotted against the true meridian. If a vertical projection is plotted, it is usually plotted separately and shows vertical depths against the projection of the stations along a section line joining the top and bottom of the hole on the plan view. A more practical method would be to plot the section line of the plan parallel to the abscissa of the vertical projection (Fig. 2). If this is done, any line parallel to the "base line" will pass through the points on each projection that represent a single point in the hole. Another very useful graph, which the well surveyor could provide, would be plotting of vertical depths against measured depths. Fig. 3 illustrates the next step facilitated by this form of plotting. The lines designated "well A" represent the proposed course of a hole to be drilled. Superimposed on the drawing, in its proper relative position, is the plan view and a portion of the vertical projection of a present producer, "well B." From an inspection of the plan view we arrive at the correct conclusion that the only indicated possibility of collision is at the point of crossing of the wells on the plan view. Referring to the vertical projection, note that the vertical depths of stations on B, in the vicinity of the crossing, are plotted on the same plane of projection as A. The clearance is the indicated distance between the two vertical sections measured along the parallel to the "base line," which passes through the point of intersection of the plan view. Repeat this process for the other wells crossing the proposed course of A on the plan view and you have a preliminary check of clearance for the proposed course. GOLD was discovered in Alder Gulch, Virginia. City, Mont., on May 26, 1863. In a short time some 6000 people flocked to the new discovery, and on the banks of Alder Gulch six settlements sprang into existence, the principal one, Virginia City, alone surviving. This town today has a population of 800, and is the county seat of Madison County. It is estimated that between forty and fifty million dollars in gold was produced up to 1904. Virginia City is situated at the mouth of Alder Creek where that stream leaves the narrow canyon that cuts the steep foothills flanking Old Baldy Mountain, elevation 9572 ft., 12 mi. south. Virginia City itself is 5700 ft. above sea level.

IN common with many other companies engaged in the mining and processing of ores, research has always been an important activity of the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company. Much of this research has been carried on at the various plants of the Company by the operating staffs, and over the years has been an essential factor in developing new methods and improving existing methods of operation. In 1917 arrangements were made with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under which the Company had the exclusive use of one or two small laboratories in the then newly constructed MIT buildings and the use of the metallurgical laboratories, subject of course to the Institute's needs. After about two years this work was temporarily discontinued but was resumed in 1920 under the direction of G. H. Clevenger, consulting metallurgist for the Company, who recently retired. Becoming cramped for space, the laboratory was moved to a location near MIT on Amherst Street, Cambridge, in 1924. Establishment of a general research laboratory in metropolitan Boston naturally followed from the fact that the head office of the Company was located there and that the library facilities available for all types of research were, and are, unsurpassed. The disadvantages in carrying on research at great distances from the operating units of the Company were always apparent, but with widely scattered plants this disadvantage could not he overcome. TOWARD the close of 1925, a British geologist, T. Landell Mills, brought to the notice of .A. Chester Beatty and selection Trust Ltd. certain mineral areas in southern Yugoslavia. Mills' data, which included rough maps and preliminary reports by' a Yugoslav engineer, Jules Draskocy, appeared interesting to Reatty, and early in 1926, I, with three British assistants, proceeded to Serbiaand commenced the investigation of several groups of ancient mine workings. They were found to be extensive and the geological conditions-schists, limestones, and andesitic intrusive-favorable for mineral deposits. At Stan Trg, on the Trepca Concession, five rniles east of Kosovska Mitrovica, an ancient filled adit was found, a shelter-hut erected, and work started in reopening this adit.

THOUGH the flotation of gold ores has come into the lime- light largely in recent years, it is not a product of recent economic conditions but rather as old as flotation itself. It could hardly be other- wise, since gold, when in the right state of comminution and surface condition, is one of the more readily floated of minerals. In early practice it was not generally recognized that gold was floated as well; it was - thought that the gold was bound up with sulphide minerals that floated, but now we know that free gold must have been floated as well.

METALLURGISTS and mill operators appreciate, in a general way, .the economic or commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product but few have correlated in detail fluctuating metal prices with the metallurgy. They know that many factors such as metal price, dedusiions for returning charge, transportation, percentage of metal in head ore, etc.; all affect the commercial relationship between recovery and grade of product. In practically every mill some one at some ' time has calculated the amount of recovery that can be sacrificed for each percentage increase in grade of concentrate and from this calculated ratio the commercial or ., economic tail has been established. Such a ratio finally becomes a well-entrenched rule by which the progress of the metallurgy is judged.. When once established, these-, ratios are but seldom corrected to changes of metal prices for each possible grade of concentrate that may be produced. The calculation is tedious when often repeated. Other methods have been suggested and used to correlate the commercial with the metallurgical phase. A factor .derived ,by multiplying the grade of concentrate by recovery is often used, but is of little importance because it does not possess a single commercial quantity. The percentage monetary recovery calculated by dividing the gross value of the ore into the net smelter return gives a good economic index and, is to be commended, but it is difficult to correlate exactly and quickly the work of each day on a commercial basis.

From time to time papers treating of specific cases of Southern gold-mines and mining have appeared in the Transactions of this Institute, as well as in other journals and publications. Mr. George I?. Becker, of the United States Geological Survey, made a reconnaissance of the Southern Appalachian gold-belt during the fall of 1894; the results of his investigations are published under the title of "A Reconnoissance of the GoldFields of the Southern Appalachians," in the Sixteenth Annual Report of the Director of the United States Geological Survey, 1894-95 : Part III., " Mineral Resources of the United States." Mr. Becker has treated the subject mainly in a scientific geological manner. We present this paper to the members of the Institute as requested by the Secretary last May, with the object of covering the ground from a more practical and technical standpoint. The notes for this paper were made in a large measure from personal observations, gained chiefly during the past summer on a trip through the field. In connection with this trip we collected a suite of typical hand-specimens, representing the gold-ores and wall-rock from the more important localities. This collection forms a part of the exhibit

THERE have been eight different oil zones identified and produced at Santa Fe Springs, of which three or four are in turn divided into two or three parts. These zones are, from top to bottom, the Foix, difference of opinion over this nomenclature, with reference to the different zones referred to as Clark, it has no particular bearing on the water problems. Each of these oil zones has had waters of varying salinity associated with it, either within or at the bottom of the 'zone. Table 1 is a tabulation of the zones, their maximum thicknesses, salinity and heads of various waters. Surface waters are fresh, and of high head, giving artesian flow in some instances.

The creep behavior of Nb(Cb), Ta, Mo, and W was determined under conditions of constant atomic dif-fzisivity, constant stress to elastic modulus ratio, and nearly equivalent grain size, and the steady-state creep rates obtained from these tests were correlated with calculated stacking fault energies for the metals. These results, in conjunction with similar data for several fccMetals,13 suggest that stacking fault energy may influence the creep strength ofbcc metals. The interrelationship between steady-state creep rate, subgrain size, and stacking fault energy was examined. It was found that the subgrain size for a given creep stress, increased as stacking fault energy increased, but that this relationship did not cormpletely account for the effect of stacking fault energy on creep rate. The crystallography and energetics of stacking fault formation in bcc metals has been discussed by a num-ber of authors,1-5 and impurity stabilized stacking faults on (112) planes have been observed in Nb,6,7 w,8,9 Fe,] and V" by transmission electron microscopy. However, a crucial question is whether or not stack-ing faults influence the mechanical strength of bcc metals. Potentially, stacking faults could increase strength by reducing the mobility of the partial dis-locations bounding the fault, by acting as barriers to slip dislocations, and by retarding the climb of dislo-cations during high-temperature deformation. The objective of this study was to seek a correlation be-tween creep strength and stacking fault energy for several bcc metals; namely, Nb, Ta, Mo, and W. The creep behavior of most polycrystalline metals and alloys at high temperatures and moderate stresses can be described by the following relation:11,12 im=Af(s) where i, = minimum creep rate, A = constant, j(s) = a function involving metallurgical structure, a = applied stress, E = average elastic modulus at the test tempera-ture, w = constant (equal to 5 for most pure metals), D = diffusion coefficient. IMD nificantly affects the creep resistance of fcc metals is stacking fault energy, and creep rate has been shown to vary directly with stacking fault energy to the 3.5 power." In the latter investigation, four fcc metals of widely different stacking fault energies (Ag, Cu, Ni, and Al) were creep tested at a constant stress to modulus ratio of 1.21 x 10-4, at a constant diffusivity of 2.7 x 10-12 sq cm per sec, and at nearly equivalent grain sizes of about 0.7 mm. The creep data were then correlated with stacking fault energies. In the present study, a similar procedure was followed. All materials used in this work were consolidated by powder metallurgy techniques. Impurity contents in the as-received materials are listed in Table I. Chemical analyses showed that no measurable contamination of the test specimens occurred during pretest annealing treatments or creep testing. Specimens with a gage section 0.75 by 0.125 by 0.050 in. were creep tested in tension in a vacuum of less than 10-9 torr. Deformation at temperature was measured by tracking fiducial marks on the gage section of the specimen with an optical comparator. The creep mechanism and kinetics of fine-grained magnesium have been studied over the temperature range 200&apos; to 600°F. As a result of a photographic study of microstructural changes, transient and steady-state creep components have been correlated with slip, subgrain formation, and cyclic deformation at the grain boundaries. THE approach of this research has been the blend of a quantitative study of the creep strain of polycrystalline magnesium as a function of time, stress, and temperature with direct microstructural observations of the operative deformation processes. The validity of the conclusions is dependent on the condition that the microstructural changes seen on the polished surface qualitatively represent those occurring in the bulk of the metal. The work was intended as much to lay a background to a study of highly creep-resistant magnesium alloys as to provide a description of the behavior of the base metal itself. The spectroscopic analysis of the electrolytic magnesium used in this study is as follows: Al, 0.009 pct; Ca, <0.01; Cu, 0.0011; Fe, 0.021; Mn, 0.012; Ni, 0.0004; Pb, 0.0012; Si, <0.001; Sn, <0.001; and Zn, <0.01. The impurity level is approximately that of commercial magnesium alloys. The original ingot was melted under Dow type 310 flux and cast as a 3 in. diam billet. It was extruded into 1 in. flat stock under the conditions: billet preheat 800°F (1 hr), container and die temperature 800°F, speed 3 ft per min, and area reduction ratio 45:1. The extrusion process was chosen in preference to rolling and recrystallization because it allowed easier grain size control from specimen to specimen. The grains of the extruded metal were fairly equi-axial and uniform in the size range of 4 to 6 thousandths of an inch. The preferred orientation of basal planes about the transverse direction was determined by an X-ray diffraction surface reflection method. A beam of filtered copper radiation was directed at an angle of 17" to both the transverse direction and the surface yet perpendicular to the extrusion axis. Analysis of the (002) diffraction arcs in the resulting photographic patterns gave an approximate intensity distribution along the great circle which extends through the center of the basal plane pole figure and to the extrusion axis poles. Successive layers of metal were removed by macro-etching between exposures. The extruded texture is relatively sharp, but the most significant point is the position of the maximum basal plane pole density and its variation with depth below the surface. Fig. 1 shows that this maximum is rotated 15" from the normal at the surface toward the extrusion direction. Such an inclination has been reported for extruded 1 pct Mn and 8 pct A1-0.5 pct Zn alloys.&apos; The inclination decreases until the maximum splits at about 0.025 in. depth into two elements of equal and opposite rotations from the ideal. The double texture persists to as great a depth as was experimentally convenient to examine. It probably continues to the very center of the extrusion. There is no great change in the sharpness of the individual elements of the texture with depth. A plate of metal about 0.015 in. thick at the surface of the extruded stock was produced by etching. A transmission diffraction pattern was made for the purpose of determining any preferred orientation of a direction in the basal planes. Relatively uniform {loo) and {101) rings were produced. There is little tendency for parallelism of a given direction in the plane with the projection of the extrusion axis on it. The creep specimens were machined from 6¼ in. lengths of the extruded stock. Creep was measured on the reduced section, ½x1/8X2¼ in. long. This section was electropolished on one side for the studies of microstructural changes during creep. An orthophosphoric acid-ethyl alcohol electrolyte was used under the conditions recommended by Jacquet.² Hand polishing was used for previous mechanical preparation. Electropolishing was continued until all mechanical twins had been removed. The electro-polished surface was protected from oxidation during creep testing by a thin layer of silicone oil. All micrographs were taken at room temperature on conventional metallographic equipment and after removal of the oil film. The creep tests were performed with machines which have been described in detail by Moore and McDonald." Five testing temperatures, 200°, 300°, 400°, 500°, and 600° ±3°F were used. Difference in temperature between the two ends of the specimen reduced section was 2°F or less. The testing was done at constant load. Strain readings were taken as frequently as necessary to develop usable creep curves. Tensile Creep vs Time, Stress, and Temperature A definition of terms is necessary. ALLOYS of iron and aluminum up to 35 wt pct aluminum are single-phase solid solutions, and are of potentially wide applicability.1-3 In spite of early and continued interest1-4 little progress has been made until recently in the preparation and evaluation of sound alloys containing more than 6 wt pct aluminum. Vacuum-melting techniques for the production of ductile Fe-A1 alloys have been described recently.1-7 A. procedure for air melting these alloys is presented here. Low-carbon iron is induction melted without a slag in a rammed magnesia crucible. At the beginning of melt-down, aluminum pig (99.95 pct Al), charged in a clay-graphite bottom-pouring crucible is placed in a pot furnace at 1800°F. The primary deoxidation of the molten iron after melt-down is effected by the addition of 0.1 pct aluminum and 0.5 pct manganese. (Hilty and Crafts" have reported a significant increase in the deoxidation efficiency of the aluminum and manganese combination over that of the aluminum alone.) A more drastic deoxidation designed to reduce the oxyen content to the lowest possible level is accomplished by plunging metallic calcium to the bottom of the melt. This is done by wiring small cubes of the metal to a steel rod. A circular shield larger than the diameter of the crucible opening is attached to the rod so that any spa&apos;ttering of the molten metal will not endanger the operator. Since the temperature of the molten metal is above the boiling point of calcium, the bath is vigclrously purged by calcium vapor. It is believed that the calcium-vapor treatment permits a homogeneous distribution of calcium in the melt. Owing to the vigor of the reaction the temperature of the molten metal should be kept below 2900°F prior to the calcium addition. A total of 0.05 pct calcium is added in two stages in this manner. The second calcium deoxidation is made just before charging the molten aluminum into the iron, in order that an excess of calcium be present for the remainder of the melt. The aluminum, which has been removed from the holding furnace, is then hydrogen degassed by bubbling chlorine through a quartz tube immersed in the molten aluminum. The hydrogen-chlorine reaction is an exothermic one preventing the solidification of the aluminum during the 5-min chlorination. Approximately 0.1 pct calcium, based on the amount of aluminum, is then added to the aluminum. A further excess of calcium is introduced into the melt in this manner. The oxide dross is removed, fluorspar is added to the molten iron, and the molten aluminum is poured through the fluorspar slag. The fluorspar should be dried thoroughly prior to its use, as any water present will react with the aluminum. Aluminum oxide formed during the pouring operation reacts with the fluorspar slag to form gaseous aluminum fluoride and calcium oxide. A forced-draft ventilating system is required for this operation as aluminum fluoride is toxic. As soon as the molten aluminum has been added, vigorous manual stirring of the melt is required because the slag-aluminum oxide reaction is highly exothermic and tends to take place near the top of the melt. The combination of high temperature and the slagging action of the fluorspar quickly erodes the crucible at the slag line if the aluminum is not stirred uniformly into the melt. It has been found that at least 4 min of manual stirring combined with induction stirring are necessary to ensure homogeneity. The power is shut off 1 min prior to pouring to allow metal and slag to separate. As much slag as possible is removed from the melt, which is then poured directly into cast-iron molds. A mold wash of aluminum oxide is used to prevent ingot sticking. For slab ingots which are to be rolled into sheet, a carbon-tetrachloride vapor atmosphere or a chlorinated-pitch mold wash is desirable, as the aluminum oxide formed in the pouring operation is subsequently removed by the chlorine in the presence of carbon." As in vacuum melting, a pouring temperature of about 2900°F is recommended. Adequate hot-topping is important as iron-aluminum ingots are subject to very deep piping. THE recently discovered occurrence of diamonds near Murfreesboro, Pike county, Ark., was brought to. our attention by Mr. Samuel W. Reyburn (Trustee for Messrs. C. S. Stifft, A. D. Cohn, August Zinsser, Jr., and himself, owners of the property), through whose courtesy we investigated the locality of the deposit. Prospecting with the diamond-drill is now in active progress ; but mining operations on a large scale have not yet been ordered. Geology.-The geology as well as the petrography of this interesting locality has been well described by Messrs. J. C. Branner and R. N. Brackett.1 Briefly summarized, the igneous rock in which the diamonds are found is a vitreous peridotite, forming a stock or volcanic neck, which has broken up through the Carboniferous and Cretaceous quartzites and sandstones. After an extensive period of erosion, during which an unknown portion of the neck and presumably a previously existent volcanic cone have been removed, the surface was covered with thin beds of Post-Tertiary conglomerate. The volcanic intrusion was accompanied by the formation of several small dikes of a rock much like that of the main body. One of these dikes cuts across the stock, while another cuts the Cretaceous sandstone, but is overlain by the conglomerate, thus giving a datum for the period of intrusion. So far as known, there was little, if any, metamorphism of the country-rock by the igneous magna, which probably followed an approximately vertical course, so that a more or less vertical extension downward of the igneous body to indefinite depths may be expected.
