The restraining effects of war conditions on oil-field development are well illustrated by statistics on South Texas † fields for the year 1942. Statistics also show a decline in wildcatting, but this decrease is much smaller than that shown by field activity. In comparison with results in 1941, there was a reduction of about 44 per cent in the total number of wells drilled in the area (802 in 1942 against 1452 in 1941) This 44 per cent drop represents declines of 50.4 per cent in field wells and of 17.4 per cent in rank wildcats. Field wells (exclusive of 18 wildcats that discovered fields) totaled 598; also, 204 rank wildcats were drilled (see Tables 3 and 4). The corresponding figures for 1941 are 1205 field and extension wells and 247 rank wildcats. In this connection, it should be noted that whereas in 1941 the rank wildcats made up only 17 per cent of all wells drilled in the area, their percentage of the 1942 total was 25.4 per cent. In spite of the decrease of 43 in the number of rank wildcatst drilled, there were 18 new productive areas discavered, one more than the 17 new fields found in 1941. Thus the field-discovery rate for 1942, one new field for every 11.3 wildcats drilled, compares favorably with the I to 14.5 rate of 1941. Thirteen new producing levels were opened in fields; this includes the finding of 44' gravity crude on the west flank of the Sejita field in a 5700-ft. sand, which produccs distillate higher on the structure. Interesting, and showing the general scarcity of sand discoveries, is the fact that of the 13 new sands discovered, 7 were found in Jim Wells County. The year's sand-discovery rate of one new level for every 46 field wells compares very unfavorably with the I to 19.7 rate of 1941, during which 61 new producing horizons were found. Developmeilt of new fields was on a small scale. In several instances activity in these areas was not carried beyond the drilling of the discovery well. In 1944, Illinois produced 77,413,000 bbl. of oil, or 4.6 per cent of the total for the United States, and continued to rank sixth in the nation in oil production. This represents a decrease of 6 per cent from 1943, when- the total Illinois production was 82,256,000 bbl. This decrease was much less than the 23 per cent decrease in 1943 from production of the previous year. The principal factor in arresting the production declinc, which had been going on since 1941, seems to be the increased drilling that followed the relaxing of the Federal Government's rules in regard to well spacing. The daily average production for 1944 was approximately 212,000 bbl. Of the 1991 wells, 430 are classified as "wildcat" as compared with 461 in 1943. Twenty-eight new pools (Table 2 A) were discovered in 1944 as compared with 29 in 1943. Changes in federal drilling regulations, permitting closer spacing of wells, resulted in a drilling program that emphasized development of proved acreage rather than wildcatting. Data on production and drilling by fields are given in Table I; data on annual production and drilling for Illinois, in Table 3. Discoveries Twenty-eight new fields (Table 2 A), 42 extensions (Table 2 B), and 39 additional producing zones in existing fields (Table 2 C) were discovered in 16 counties in Illinois during 1944. Of the 28 new fields, one was abandoned during the year, 14 were one-well fields, eight others had not more than 6 wells, one had 8, one had 9, one had 11, one had 15, and the largest new field, Roaches North, had 28 producing wells at the end of the year. In all, 109 wells were producing in these new fields on Jan. 2, 1945, as compared with 111 wells producing from 29 new fields at the end of 1943. . The average initial production of the discovery wells of the 28 new fields was 129 bbl. of oil and II bbl. of water, a notable decline from the average initial production of 194 bbl, of oil and 15 bbl. of salt water for the 1943 discovery wells. In fields discovered since 1936, the total number of oil wells producing at the end of 1944 was 12,335. Productive Acreage The area of proved production in the new fields (discovered since 1936) increased from 144,335 acres at the end of 1943 to 173,485 acres at the end of 1944 (Table I), an increase of 29,150 acres. Of this increased area, 1720 acres are in fields discovered during 1944 and 27,430 acres are in extensions of fields discovered earlier.

The sessile-drop technique was employed to study the effect of atmosphere and alloy additions of titanium and chromium on the surface tension and contact angle of nickel on sapphire substrates at 1500oC. Shear tests were conducted on the solidified sessile drops. The liquid-gas surface tension of pure nickel on sapphire was found to be 1747 ergs per sq cm, with a contact angle of 109.6 deg. The surface tension and contact angle were not affected significantly by the four atmospheres, vacuum, impure argon, pure argon, and pure hydrogen. Small additions of titanium and chromium decreased the contact angle and for the same alloy content, contact angles were lower in pure argon than in pure hydrogen. On the basis of shear-test results , the most probable cause for adhesion in the Ni-Al2O system is the formation of NiO:Al2O3 spinel at the interface; in the titanium alloy-Al2O3 system adhesion is thought to be due to a mechanical interlocking effect; in the chromium alloy-Al2O3 system adhesion is believed to be the result of solid-solution formation involving Cr2O3 and Al2O3 at the interface. In the last few years there has been considerable interest in reinforcing metals with ceramic whiskers. It has been postulated that, by reinforcing nickel with sapphire whiskers, high-temperature strengths su- perior to those of the best current nickel alloys can be achieved.' To fabricate a whisker-metal composite having optimum density and strength, understanding of wettability and adherence in the system is of prime importance. Although there has been some previous research in this a a need for further studies has been cited4-8 to understand better the effects of impurities, alloys additions, and atmosphere on the wetting and bonding of metals to metal oxides. The purpose of this research was to investigate the factors involved in the wetting and adherence of nickel/nickel alloys to sapphire (single-crystal a Al2O3). Sessile-drop experiments were conducted in vacuum, impure argon, pure argon, and pure hydrogen, to determine the effect of atmosphere on the contact angle of the metals on sapphire, and the liquid-gas surface tension of pure nickel. The solidified sessile drops were sheared from the sapphire substrate to measure the bond strength between the metal and ceramic. The alloy additions chosen were titanium and chromium since both enhance the wetting of nickel on sapphire.2, 3c Also, titanium is commonly used when brazing metal-to-ceramic seals to improve adherence. Since chromium forms an oxide that is completely soluble in sapphire, it was thought that the oxide could serve as a transition phase to promote bonding between the Ni-Cr alloy and sapphire. I) EXPERIMENTAL APPARATUS AND PROCEDURE The sessile-drop apparatus was a horizontal furnace, with an induction-heated, cylindrical molybdenum susceptor in a water-cooled Pyrex chamber. When anhydrous cupric sulfate is heated in a stream of nonreactive gas, cupric oxysulfate is formed. When this reaction is complete, the cupric oxysulfate then decomposes to cupric oxide, which is the normal end product of reaction. The kinetics of each of these reactions has been studied using pellets prepared from finely divided cupric sulfate and from finely divided cupric oxysulfate. In each case, the reactant-product interface within the pellet is well-defined, and by normalizing the decrease in inter facial area with the weight fraction of the pellet decomposed it has been shown that the interface migrates into the pellet at a uniform rate at constant temperature. The activation energy estirnated for the decomposition of cupric sulfate is 57 ± 7 kcal per mole and that for cupric oxysulfate is 67 ± 8 kcal per mole. The rate of interfacial reaction is flow-sensitive, increasing with increasing flow of a sweep gas in the range from 50 to 2000 cu cm per min. The rate of decomposition is retarded by sulphur trioxide in the sweep gas. The relationship between sulfur trioxide Partial pressure and rate is consistent with the Langmuir Adsorption Isotherm governing the retention of sulfur trioxide in the interfacial layer. MOST of the work reported on the thermal decomposition of cupric sulfate and of cupric oxysulfate is related to the thermodynamics of the individual decompositions.'-4 No information is available on the rates of the individual reactions, on their activation energies, or on the effects of gas flow or of partial pressure of sulfur trioxide on the reaction rates. Some dubious conclusions based on relative reaction rates have been drawn from studies on the oxidation of sulfides. For example, on the basis of the products observed in a quenched system, it has been suggested5" that, when copper sulfide is roasted, the cupric oxide which is formed arises from the decomposition of either cupric sulfate or cupric oxysulfate. This is very difficult to reconcile with the thermodynamics of the C-S-O System,3 which support the probability that both cuprous oxide and cupric oxide precede cupric oxysulfate and cupric sulfate in the sequence of products formed during the oxidation of cuprous sulfide. In this paper the individual sulfate decomposition reactions will be examined and suggestions will be advanced for the mechanism of reaction. This will be based on the effects on reaction rate of changes in interfacial area, flow rate, and back-pressure of sulfur trioxide. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The copper source material used in all experiments was Fisher Certified Reagent Grade anhydrous cupric sulfate, for which the following analysis was supplied by the manufacturer: chloride, 0.002 pct; alkalies and earths, 0.2 pct; insoluble, 0.002 pct; iron, 0.020 pct. Cupric oxysulfate was prepared by roasting cupric sulfate for 48 hr, with frequent rabbling, in an open tray in a muffle furnace maintained at 725°C. At this temperature, cupric sulfate develops about 0.16 atm pressure of combined sulfur trioxide, sulfur dioxide, and oxygen. Adsorption of a nonionic polyacrylamide (PAM), an anionic polyacrylamide with sulfonate functional groups (PAMS), and a cationic polyacrylamide with amine functional groups (PAMD), on hematite was investigated as a function of different solution conditions. Adsorption results indicate that the major mechanisms of adsorption of polyacrylamides on hematite is through hydrogen bonding, with electrostatic forces playing a secondary role. All the polymers exhibited irreversibility of adsorption upon dilution. Also, entropic effects were determined to be important in adsorption. Surface chemical properties of hematite and solution chemistry of the polyacrylamides are considered to explain the polymer adsorption behavior on hematite.

To cope, capital investment planning analysts have turned almost completely to computer simulation modeling to react quickly enough to determine the effect on their companies' major investment projects and on the projected financial picture of the companies. This paper will examine various royalty and tax structures as applied to coal, oil and gas, and minerals in the U.S. and Canada with particular emphasis on recent changes in the Canadian tax scene and their implications to capital project economic evaluation in other parts of the world.

Three hundred soil samples were collected on a one-mile grid in a 400-square mile area of the Oquirrh Mountains, Utah, including the Bingham-Lark, Ophir, Rush Valley, and Mercur mining districts. The soil samples were analyzed for copper, lead, zinc, silver, molybdenum, manganese, and iron by X-ray fluorescence using arsenic as an internal standard. Anomalies coincide in most cases with the mining districts. However, in the Mercur district no anomalies were detected. Also samples collected one mile from the Bingham mine barely reflect this major producer. No samples were collected within the Bingham mine area.

This paper will discuss an application of multivariate discriminant analysis to aid in predicting mineral potential from regional geological data and information on mineral deposits, with particular emphasis on the use of the logistic discriminant function. Logistic discriminant analysis is a generalization of standard discriminant analysis in that the discriminant analysis becomes applicable under a much wider class of distributions. As a practical example, the standard multiple discriminant analysis and the logistic discriminant analysis are applied to data from the Bathurst area in the Appalachian region of Canada and the results are compared with one another.

Solubilities and densities are reported for alumina hydrates in NaOH solutions under the conditions of the Bayer process employed to purify alumina for aluminum production. The equilibrium constants for reactions to form A102- accurately correlate the effects of NaOH concentration on the solubilities; the temperature coefficients of the equilibria lead to heats of solution of 7.34, 4.76, and 5.24 kcal for the a trihydrate, a monohydrate, and ß trihydrate, respectively. Moderate calcination does not change the solubility of the a trihydrate but increases that of the a monohydrate. At solution temperatures above 100°C, the trihydrates transform rapidly to a monohydrate. Hydro-thermally produced a monohydrate is the stable phase above 20°C. CORNERSTONE of the aluminum industry, the Bayer process for alumina production is based on the difference in solubility of hydrated alumina in NaOH solutions between 170" and 40°C. Solubilities and densities in this system were determined thirty years ago by M. Tosterudl under the direction of J. D. Edwards and C. S. Taylor. The solubility data, which still appear more concordant than those in the literature, are employed to sort out the complex equilibria in this system. The nomenclature for the alumina hydrates is that presented in The Aluminum Industry' and more recently summarized in Alumina Properties.3 a trihydrate is the purified phase analogous to gibbsite, a monohydrate is similarly akin to boehmite, and ß trihydrate is sometimes known as bayerite. Literature Goudriaan4 reviewed the early literature on alumina in NaOH solutions and presented data on the solubility at 30°C of several forms. The gel precipitated from aluminum sulphate or chloride with ammonia and dried at 130" to 140°C had the highest solubility but was unstable, its solubility being cut to one-tenth on standing in NaOH. The solubility of the gel was decreased one-third on calcination at 300" to 400°C, while that of the gel transformed in NaOH at room temperature to a crystalline trihydrate was unchanged on calcination. The preparation produced by slow hydrolysis of sodium aluminate solution with CO, in the air gave solubilities in rough agreement with later values for a trihydrate. The solubility of this form was increased slightly by the calcination. Fricke and Jucaitis5 extended the work to 30" and 60°C with a trihydrate. They also gave solubilities for ß trihydrate (bayerite b), although the residue belonging to the left branch of the solubility curve corresponded to a trihydrate. The residues at high NaOH concentrations were mono and trisodium aluminates, the latter being 3Na2O . AL2O3 • 6H2O. Solubilities of a trihydrate at 95°C and of a monohydrate at 150" and 200 °C come from the work of Magarchak.6 a trihydrate transformed to a monohydrate above 95°C. A few measurements on the solubility at 25°C of an alumina trihydrate prepared by slow hydrolysis of NaAIO, solutions were presented by Sprauer and pearce.? Their analyses showed the monosodium aluminate to have the composition Na2O.Al2O3-2.5H2O.

MOST previous quantitative work on creep of single crystals has been concerned primarily with developing empirical equations for the creep curve. Although the equations used by Cottrell and Aytekin¹ and Tyndall² represented the data quite well, it was often necessary to use different values of the constants for different specimens even though they were apparently tested under identical conditions. THE Tracy mine is within the corporate limits of Negaunee, Mich. The tract of land comprising the Tracy group lies on the east end of the Marquette Iron Range between adjoining mined-out properties on the north and south. Since acquiring the Tracy lands in 1921, Jones & Laughlin Steel Corp. has completed about 115,- 000 ft of surface diamond drilling, partially outlining five orebodies. Now that mining has started, one or more underground drills are in constant operation to obtain information that will aid mine development planning. Some 20,000 ft of underground drilling have been completed to date.

Pearson (British Iron and Steel Research Association, London, England)—Dr. Wagner has referred to the work of Richardson and Dancy and Gellner and Richardson on the reduction at 900°C of wustite films on iron. He has assumed that iron ions and electrons migrate backwards to the iron-wustite interface and that the reduced iron grows on the metal substrate. This would be a possible explanation of the results of these workers were it not for the fact that, as stated by Gellner and Richardson but not stressed, this growth in the center of the specimen can occur even

William Andrews Clark, former United States senator from Montana, died at his home in New York on March 2, at the age of 86, after a brief illness due to pneumonia. He was the last of the three great Montana mining magnates, Clark, Daly and Heinze. He was born in Connellsville, Pa., on Jan. 8, 1839, and in 1863 arrived in Bannock, Ida., with only five dollars, after a journey of 65 days. On reaching Idaho, he became successively a miner, teamster, machinist, railway builder, mine owner, capitalist and, in his more recent years, philanthropist and art collector.

The program for the Annual Meeting to be held in New York, Feb.17 to 20, 1919, inclusive, has been nearly completed. Besides the usual meetings for the reading of technical papers, the social features are being given special attention. They will probably embody the following: On Monday evening, a lecture by one of our fighting airplane pilots, to be illustrated by lantern slides and moving pictures. To this entertainment the ladies will be invited, as well as members. On Tuesday evening, a Smoker at which some very startling features are promised for the entertainment of members. On Wednesday evening, the usual banquet, at which it is hoped to have some very interesting speakers. The usual luncheons will be served in the Engineering Building and other features will be offered for the entertainment of the ladies during the day. No definite plans for the Thursday excursion have yet been formulated, though it is probable that something interesting will be offered the members.
