Accurate prediction of recoverable reserves are key to the development and planning of a mining operation. Recovery functions for tonnage, quantity of metal, and ore grade are defined and two approaches for their estimation are proposed. The indicator kriging (IK) approach draws on the data rank orders, whereas the multigaussian (MG) approach relies on a grade multivariate distribution hypothesis. Although based on different premises, both approaches yield remarkably similar, and reasonably accurate, estimates for recoverable reserves.

The discovery of the auriferous cement gravel deposits in and near Deadwood Gulch, Lawrence County, Dakota Territory, in 1876, created a mining excitement, and rush to the Black Hills. Numerous ten and twenty-stamp mills were built on Deadwood Gulch; Central City and the town of Deadwood sprang into existence, and became the centres of the mining industry of the Hills. Gold quartz deposits were subsequently discovered and located on a so-called mineral belt, extending from Whitewood Creek on the south, to Deadwood Gulch on the north. A northerly group of these quartz locations was purchased in December, 1877, by parties in San Francisco, who formed a company, incorporated under the name of the Father de Smet Consolidated Gold Mining Company. This company immediately commenced the work of exploration The deposits were proved to be extensive, and easily mined, but it was found that the ore, on an average, would not yield more than $10.00 per ton* of 2000 pounds. • At this trine the cost of supplies and materials in the Hills was high. Miners' wages were $3.50 per diem, and custom mills charged $6.00 per ton. The successful working of mines on "the belt" necessitated cheap milling. The physical and chemical structure of the oxide films formed on metals and alloys is of interest in our understanding of their protective properties. According to Pilling and Bedworth,¹ if the specific volume of the oxide is equal to or greater than that of the metal, a compact or continuous structure results; if the volume of the oxide is less, a cellular or porous structure forms. With the cellular type of coating the surface layer of oxide offers no impedance to oxidation; at a given temperature the rate of oxidation is quite constant. On the other hand, the compact type of coating acts as an effective barrier to oxygen and the rate of oxidation will follow a parabolic law. The recent work of Gulbransen2 and of Leontis and Rhines3 on the oxidation of magnesium indicates that it is not necessary for the volume of the oxide to be greater than that of the metal in order that the oxidation may follow a parabolic rate law. One exception to the rule of Pilling and Bedworth¹ is noted by Scheil;4 namely, tungsten. At 500° and 700°C long-time oxidations indicate a linear rate law with time. However, Dunn's6 0xidation measurements from 700°to 1000°C indicate that a parabolic rate law is followed. The oxide is mainly yellow WO a with a thin layer of the blue oxide. Preliminary results on the oxidation of tungsten6 in the temperature range 400° to 500°C indicate that the oxidation does proceed according to a parabolic rate law. Irrespective of the actual rate law that tungsten may obey, it is of interest to compare the results obtained on the oxidation of tungsten in the thin film region with those found when the metal is scaling. A time-temperature study of the oxides formed on both molybdenum and tungsten may indicate whether there exist any peculiarities in the oxide structures of the thin film region compared with those of the scaling region of oxidation. In a recent paper the authors7 presented an investigation of the structures of the oxide films formed on the metals iron, cobalt, nickel, chromium and copper. The results of these studies are presented in graphical form as existence diagrams of the oxides on a time-temperature scale. The existence diagrams of the oxides occurring on some of the metals are simple and show few chemical transitions, but there are many cases in which the physical state of the oxide surface changes as a function of time and temperature, as evidenced by the appearance or disappearance of orientation effects and sharpness of patterns. In the paper by Mr. Fernom, on Red Charcoal, read at the first session of this meeting, it was suggested that this fuel might be used in the blast furnace with greater economy than ordinary or black charcoal. In the discussion which followed the paper, it was stated that the charcoal furnaces of the Lake Superior District have used imperfectly burned charcoal with success, and that these furnaces have given the best results in fuel economy on record. On consulting some of our well-known metallurgical authorities the writer finds that the question of the use of red charcoal, or other imperfectly burned charcoal, or charred wood, is not at all new. In Percy's late work on Fuel, pages 409-414, are given a few facts, which are here condensed, as follows:

THE data here given were obtained by 1500 tests made, by the United Verde Copper Co. to determine the most economical air pressure for the operation of hammer drills under the varying conditions of use, and to investigate the variation in drilling speed at different air pressures Twelve models of drills were used at gage pressures ranging from 40 to 130 lb. No effort was made to harmonize theory and practice; but rather to formulate empiric rules that would cover the. average variation of the results obtained. These rules on the performance of hammer drills, based on the air pressure as the main variable, however, are not necessarily of universal application, but they apparently satisfy the results obtained in this series of tests. The drilling conditions at this property vary widely; an average of twenty-one machine shifts to a 3-ft. (0.9-m.) round has been found necessary in some of the development work, while an, advance of 56. ft. has been made in seven shifts in the "oxide" ground. This range pre-eludes the adoption of one type of drill as a standard; consequently almost every kind of hammer drill sold in this country has been tested. At present, sixteen models are in use, of which two types of the heavy (150 to 160 lb.) mounted drills, one of the light mounted drill, one stoper, and two hand plugging drills are considered as standard.

It is generally recognized that non-metallic inclusions in steel come from two principal sources. First are the chemical reactions in the furnace, or in subsequent deoxidation, resulting in slag which does not free itself from the metal. Much information has been published concerning these chemical reactions and their control through proper attention to slag viscosity, composition of deoxidizers, and other qualities. The studies of this subject by C. H. Herty, Jr. and others through the medium of physical chemistry have yielded much information for the steelmaker. The second source is erosion of ladle refractories, such as lining brick, stoppers, nozzles and runners, causing entrapped particles of globules of fluxed silicate material. In contrast with the large amount of information available on the first source, relatively little has been published on the subject of erosion which, in the case of basic electric melted steel, is the principal source of nonmetallics. This is probably due to the fact that the problem was assumed to be one of simple mechanical erosion, which could be solved primarily by modification of ladle practices. Good improvements have been made by elimination of slurries in the ladle, better ladle and runner refractories, and more attention to pouring temperatures. It is doubtful, however, that this problem has been recognized in its true light since it is not one of simple mechanical erosion but rather one of chemical reaction between the metal and the refractories; and in this sense is as much a problem of physical chemistry as the reactions involved in the actual steelmaking process. The influence of ladle refractories on the resulting cleanness of steels was early recognized by A. McCancel who examined large inclusions in steels made by both acid and basic practices. His chemical analyses showed the large influence exerted by the manganese content of the steel on erosion of the ladle and nozzles used in those days. The presence of MnO in such inclusions led McCance to the hypothesis that both basic and acid steels react chemically with the ladle refractories so that small globules of fluxed refractories are carried in the stream into the molds. This early work of McCance was checked by one of the present authors on basic electric bearing-steel, and it was found that on steels containing as low as 0.40 pct manganese the fluxed surface of the ladle lining after delivering such a heat showed as high as 25 pct MnO by actual analysis. Furthermore, by lowering the manganese content of the steel to 0.20 pct, ladle erosion was decreased with a corresponding decrease in silicate inclusions in the steel. Limitations placed on the manganese content for the required inherent properties made it impossible to pursue this line further, and subsequent attention was concentrated on improved ladle refractories, care in keeping the ladle clean and free from loose refractories up to the time of tapping, and pouring the steel at optimum temperature. Our study of the chemical reactions at the metal-brick interface between steel and ladle refractories was revived in 1939 as a result of an experimental observation made on the cleanness of alloy steels of the SAE types. This observation showed that the relative cleanness of such steels made in basic electric arc furnaces of 12 ton capacity and poured in ingots ranging from 1100 to 2200 lb weight was determined to a large extent by the ratio of the manganese and silicon contents, provided other steelmaking variables such as tapping temperature, pouring temperature, pouring time, amount of aluminum added for grain size control, and degree of deoxidation in the furnace were kept reasonably constant. Detailed studies made on the deoxidation and slag practice during the refining period of basic electric furnace practice showed that these two variables exerted some influence on the resulting cleanness of steel in the form of bars and forgings. The important variable, the manganese-silicon balance, was not apparent until heats were made in succession by the best furnace practice kept under fairly rigid metallurgical control. Another observation pertinent to this work concerned the similarity in the microscope of slag particles causing magnaflux or step-down indications in subsequent rolled bars, and the patches of slag frequently seen on the surface of ingots. These patches are generally believed to come from the glassy metal-brick interface in the ladle and represent an entrapment of such glass (both from the ladle brick and nozzle) in the metal as it flows over the refractories in the neighborhood of the nozzle. These glassy particles are carried down into the mold with the liquid steel, and gradually coalesce into a slag "button" which floats on the surface of the steel as it rises in the molds. Periodically the button is washed to the side of the ingot where it is trapped between the surface of the ingot and the mold, later appearing as a slag patch on the surface of the ingot after stripping. Even though most of the small glassy particles coalesce into a slag button while the ingot is being poured, it is logical to suspect this step in the steelmaking process as being a source of slag lines large enough to cause trouble

When the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund was established in. 1929 the donors mentioned certain types of projects to which preference might be given in selecting those to he financed by the income from the Fund. One suggestion. was that the projects "be of particular benefit to young engineers." This modest little book meets this specification most aptly. It seeks to guide the engineer-particularly the young one-with the least loss of time and effort to the most convenient source of authentic information regarding any topic in which he may at the moment be interested. Knowing the best place to find the literature on a subject is almost as valuable-and far more practicable-than maintaining a library of one's own large enough to provide the information.

Colorado School of Mines The, forty-first annual commencement exercises of the Colorado School of Mines were .held at Golden, Colo., on Friday, May 28, 1915. Dr. Lucien I. Blake delivered an address on Epochs in Science. The degree of Engineer of Mines was conferred upon 30 men, and the degree of Master of Science on one man. At the recent annual meeting of the Mining Engineering Society, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, officers were elected as follows: President, K. M. Sully; Vice-President and Treasurer, D. M. McRae; Secretary, H. Solakian. The Student Auxiliary Society of the A. I. M. E. at the University of Kansas, Lawrence, Kan., has elected officers as follows for the year 1915-16: President, Harry E. Crum; Vice-President, Leland E. Fiske; Secretary and Treasurer, Ben A. Sweeney.

AVING started to tell you of working potter's clay for making crucibles and shells, the wish came to me to tell you of the practice of this art also. Although it may seem at first glance to be outside the order and purpose of my writing, he who considers well will see that it is not unrelated to it but proper, since it is wholly dependent on the agency and power of fire if it is to be brought to its perfection. Moreover, the potter's glazes and colors are all substances of various metals or impure minerals and therefore belong to fire. Since it is my intention to treat of fire, minerals, and metals for you, I surely should not have omitted this, particularly because it is a necessary art which enriches and is greatly praised both for its ingenuity and its beauty. The art of the potter has two sources as its principal basis. One comes from the art of design, the other from various alchemical secrets and elemental mixtures. In regard to these, I find that, in my opinion, all this art depends in the last analysis on four things: on good judgment in general, and on the art of design so as to be able to make the vessels beautiful and of good shape, as well as to ornament them with painting; after baking them well the first and second times, the next thing is to know how to make and apply the glaze well and to paint them with varied and appropriate colors. The fourth is to see that you have good, fine clay without small stones or lumps-indeed this is to be considered as the first thing. Now this that I have called clay is what many call cretaceous earth and some call argil. It is found and dug up when the masters wish to make use of it and is put in a container to be moistened. When it is moistened, it is beaten on a bench with an iron rod and very well prepared. Mixing it carefully, every small stone, lump, or other hardness that it contains is removed and cleaned away. Then a shaft [145V] of iron is fitted as the journal in a large wheel. On the other end of the journal a small wheel is made which forms an instrument for working that is called a lathe. Having put some clay on this, it is made to rotate by pushing with one foot, and, by rotating it, vessels are worked into a pleasing shape and size. Then they are taken off and put on a board to dry. The resolution drafted by J. W. Richards, J. V. N. Dorr, and Allen H. Rogers on the death of J. E. Johnson, Jr., and adopted by the Board of Directors, is as follows: "The Boards of Directors of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers wishes to place on record its great personal loss in the sudden death of Mr. J. E. Johnson, Jr., our fellow Director of the activities of the Institute, a member our Executive Committee, Chairman of the Institute's Committee on Admissions, and Vice-chairman of its Iron and Steel Committee. "A mere recital of these positions of trust and responsibility, which he filled with conscientious efficiency and marked ability, shows how greatly the Institute has lost by his death. No one else of the Institute's officers could have been so illy spared. We, his colleagues, take up his tasks with a sense of our inability to discharge them as well as he, and this with a doubled sense of our loss. "Others have written and spoken of the blow which his death has been to the furtherance of the metallurgy of iron and steel. His pre-eminence in this line is one of the facts of which the Institute is justly proud. Here his personality, originality, courageousness in advocating new principles, clearness of writing and forcible presentation of facts, are irreplaceable. His two great treatises on the blast furnace are his literary and scientific memorial.

The solution here offered is at once simple and important in its direct and indirect bearings. According to the principles of surface-tension, which will be found sufficiently enlarged upon for present purposes in Clerk Maxwell's excellent little treatise on The Theory of Heat, a mechanical mixture of liquids will frequently of itself divide into groups, consisting of liquids mixing among themselves but withdrawing from the other liquids. The following simple and familiar illustration will suffice: " If we mix water with alcohol, the liquids diffuse into each other. If we now attempt to mix oil with the alcohol and water, the two liquids separate from each other of themselves, and in the act of separation sufficient force is brought into play to set in motion considerable masses of the fluids." Maxwell goes on to show that this relative energy is one of arrangement, depending on the nature of the fluids and the area of the surface of contact, the act of separation tending to reduce this surface to a minimum consistent with equilibrium; that this surface-tension exists between a solid and touching fluid, either liquid or gaseous, being of one sign or the other, in the case of a liquid, according as it tends to draw itself up into a drop on its surface or to spread and wet the solid. A GREAT labor, surely, is that of the coppersmith, since his every work must be hewn from the mass of copper by force of the hammer. At the beginning, middle, and, end all his works are inconvenient pieces and unpleasant to handle. If the work is done on the forge with the fire, it is done in order to refine or compose it into masses again, for drawing these out while hot with the blows of some heavy hammer, or in order to put the works in a condition that allows them to be drawn out while cold and worked. In this he puts all his labor and industry. He who works at this art often makes use of large hammers, sometimes of small ones, and sometimes of those that have a long iron head and a short handle. With these he is obliged ever to proceed in one of these activities, either extending the work lengthwise, narrowing it, or widening it. This is achieved by the manner and direction of striking and therefore it is sometimes hammered on the inside, sometimes on the outside, sometimes with the peen, and sometimes with the flat head. For instance, when he wishes to close it up he strikes it on the outside with the peen, and if he wishes to widen it he strikes it on the inside with either the flat head or the peen. In this way he proceeds to shape it with constant patience, and to make all the vessels that he works graceful. This metal, as I have told you, is soft, flexible, and tenacious under the hammer. It yields with a certain toughness, provided, however, that it is fine and without admixture of a trace of tin or other metal. That craftsman is a good master of this art who best makes every desired work

A MINING institute open to all men interested in any branch of the mining industry will be held at the Col-lege of Mines, University of Washington, Seattle, during the week beginning March 5. Prospectors, miners, mine owners, persons interested in metallurgy, investors in min-ing enterprises, and the public generally are invited to at-tend. This institute will take the place of the Winter Min-ing Session which originated at Seattle in 1897 and con-tinued for twenty-eight years. The complete new equip-ment of the Mines Laboratory will be used to give demon-strations of new machines and processes of mining, ore dressing, and metallurgy. This year the ceramic industry, including cement and branches of clay working of special Importance in the Northwest, will be included in the insti-tute. All instruction will be given by specialists. Prominent technical men and managers will give lectures on their special subjects. Among the speakers engaged are G. T. Jackson, formerly superintendent of the Alaska-Gas-tineau and the Chichagof mines, who will speak on the mining of large bodies of low-grade ore; R. F. McElvenny, superintendent of the Tacoma Smelter, on the nature of contracts that a smelter can offer to mines and prospects; M. D. Leehey, mining lawyer, on some popular errors re-garding the mining law; H. H. Townsend, on the explora-tion and purchase of prospects by operating companies; J. L. McAllen, on quartz mining in the Willow Creek dis-trict, Alaska; F. Powell, on gold dredging. In the evenings, lectures illustrated by stereopticon views and moving pic-tures will be given. The week will close with an excursion o mines and plants.

A meeting of the Board of Directors was held in the Council Room of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Interior Building, Washington, D. C., on Friday, June 21, 1918, at 4 p. m. Twelve members of the Board, the Secretary of the Institute, and nine guests were present. Upon the petition of 28 members of the Institute residing in or near Washington, D. C., a Washington Section was authorized. A committee was appointed to nominate officers and prepare a set of by-laws. The report of the Treasurer was presented in writing, accepted, and ordered filed. Thirty-nine members, 12 associates and 8 junior associates were elected. Two members were reinstated. One resignation was accepted. The dues of 64 members were suspended on account of their being on active war duty.

G. K. BURGESS,* Washington, D. C.-In the service tests, the Advisory Committee on Aeronautics considered it highly necessary, particularly for seaplanes, to find out whether or not it was necessary to paint exposed parts; reports have been obtained but have not been pub-lished at the present time. Investigations were carried on at three Navy Yards. On just a hurried examination, the inspection was made about two weeks ago and the results are now being digested an examination shows that the aluminum alloys, whether painted or unpainted, stand up very well. It apparently is not necessary to paint, which, of course, is a very important item in the question of the weight of seaplanes. We will be able to report on that, I expect, probably at the next meeting.
