THE Kolar gold field has been for a long time the most important gold-producing area of India. It is situated in the State of Mysore, southern India, and not far from the City of Bangalore. The productive field is about 3 miles long and in it a gold-bearing quartz vein varying in width from 1 in. to over 10 ft. is worked. The vein carries high values to great depths and many of the mines have paid large dividends. GEOLOGICAL FORMATIONS IN THE MOLAR REGION The rocks of the Molar region are pre-Cambrian in age and bear a close resemblance to some of the pre-Cambrian formations of America. The oldest rocks seen are basic lavas, now mostly altered to hornblende-schists, with which is associated some banded iron-formation; these rocks are similar to the Keewatin schists and iron-formation in the Lake Superior region. The schist is cut by the gold-bearing quartz vein. In certain parts of the area there is also a conglomerate containing pebbles of granite, jasper,, and schist. The matrix resembles a horn-blende-schist and is intruded by small granite dikes, which in some cases have been pinched off by squeezing of the rock. This has led Dr. W. H. Smeeth, Chief Inspector of Mines of Mysore, to whom the writer is greatly indebted for information regarding this area and for his hospi-tality while visiting the field, to regard this conglomerate as a breccia due to crushing of granite dikes in the schist. Dr. J. W. Evans has regarded the conglomerate as probably a squeezed glacial boulder clay. From analogy with pre-Cambrian conglomerates in America, the writer regards it as a metamorphosed rock similar to our basal Huronian conglomerate. 10.2-1. Equipment Scheduling. In any earth-moving operation, more profit may be earned or lost by equipment scheduling than by any other single facet of the project. Many now-defunct earth movers would have survived the cost-profit squeeze had they followed an efficient, cost saving, equipment scheduling program. The ideal program would have every item of the equipment fleet working all of the time. In practice for many obvious reasons, principally mechanical conditions, operating conditions, and human nature-this ideal situation is not possible. The cost-conscious organization strives to keep as many pieces of equipment of the fleet working efficiently as much of the work day as possible. Operating efficiency requires the minimum equipment to move the predetermined tonnages in the prescribed period of time. In the case of a shovel-truck operation this would mean the scheduling of the minimum shovel and truck shifts to excavate and transport the necessary tonnage to the processing plant or waste dump. To accomplish this goal, the operator must work from the predetermined production established by the requirements of the plant, stripping ratio, mine plan, etc. This production schedule may be in terms of tons or yards per year, per month, or per hour, but must eventually be translated into tons or yards per ma- chine per unit of time. In this regard, the reader is referred to Sections 8.0, Excavation and Loading, and 9.0, Haulage and Transportation. The trend to larger and faster, and as a result more costly, equipment requires that the operator consider every possibility to keep the equipment operating around the clock, seven days per week. In some areas seven day operation may not be feasible economically, because of premium pay for Sunday work. Mine labor agreements are generally written without premium pay penalties for weekend work, and such scheduling is possible and most often desirable.

Since the adoption by the U. S. Bureau of Standards several years ago of specifications for standard 100- and 200-mesh sieves, frequent requests have been received that this Bureau test and certify sieves of other sizes than these. With a view to the adoption of a series of standard testing sieves which might be of use to all industries making fineness tests, this Bureau for two years has been studying the question of such a standard screen scale. Various scales that have been proposed were considered, and information was sought of representative firms in the various industries interested as to their requirements. Manufacturers of sieves have also been consulted as to the desirability of different screen scales and the practicability of their manufacture. As a result of this study of the question, a conference was called at the Bureau of Standards, Apr. 20, 1916, of representatives of various committees of the American Society for Testing Materials, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Institute of Mining Engineers, American Foundrymen's Association, Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, American Water Works Association, American Institute of Metals and the American Spice Trade Association; also representatives of the Committee of Revision of the U. S. Pharmacopæia, the U. S. Geological Survey, the U. S. Bureau of Mines, the U. S. Office of Public Roads and Rural Engineering, the U. S. Office of Grain Standardization and the U. S. Bureau of Standards; also representatives of a number of private firms engaged in industries in which sieves are used, such as the glass, the drug milling, the abrasive, the asphalt, the mining, the spice, the chemical, and the graphite industries; also representatives of the firms in this country manufacturing wire cloth and sieves. This Conference, after considering the various screen scales either proposed or now in use, adopted as a Standard Screen Scale that given in Table 1, and recommends that it be adopted generally by scientific,

We at Hughes Tool Co. are extremely proud of the quality of the hardware and techniques introduced through our efforts in tunnel-machine development and of the ready acceptance of them by manufacturers and contractors throughout the world. All of us who attended the conference and who are represented in the book, we believe, anticipate an increasing need for improved methods of underground excavation. The development of such methods will permit the further exploitation of our underground resources plus providing underground space for transportation and habitation at a rate compatible with demand. We hope that our comments, derived from the application of Hughes Tool Co.'s rotary boring experience, may provide a better understanding of the boring method as a possible avenue through which the desired improvement in underground excavation may be attained. We hope you may also become aware of some of the problems Hughes, as a pioneer developer of raise, shaft, and tunnel-boring equipment, must face prior to further major undertakings in this very interesting field. Our task is to acquaint you with the present status of the Hughes Tool Co. development program as it relates specifically to tunnel-boring machines. We feel this task can best be accomplished by a brief review of the general sequence of events leading to and constituting an equipment development program and more specifically the manner in which these events have occurred to either influence or further our boring-machine development program. The development of a machine to accomplish a certain function or series of functions is usually a very long and tedious process to which any number of individuals must contribute, perhaps over a period of centuries. Of particular irony is the fact that often those who contribute most generously do not necessarily reap the greatest immediate benefit. A marketable ma- chine will, however, result from a sequence of events such as these: 1) A problem or need is defined. 2) An idea is born to eliminate the problem.

THE rate of output of a rock crusher is based upon a certain space relation, the calculation requiring that the size and position of the jaws, the principle of motion, and the speed of the machine be known. The result is a calculated maximum output. The purpose of this paper is to develop a method of calculating this maximum output, to judge the general applicability A utility of such a calculation, and, so far as possible, to record calculated values as a basis for the comparison of actual results, or for estimating the capacity of a new crusher or of a standard crusher working under new conditions. A method for calculating the capacity of crushing rolls, which has been in common use for a long time, is well presented by R. H. Richards.1 The output is conceived as a ribbon of rock, of which the breadth, thickness and length are governed respectively by the width of the rolls, the space, between them, and their peripheral velocity. The weight of the rock thus crushed in a given time can be calculated from its specific gravity, after applying a factor representing the percentage of voids in the hypothetical ribbon. The calculation of crusher capacity is made in a somewhat similar manner. While the action of rolls is simple, with few irregularities in operating conditions, in rock crushers the material advances intermittently, usually under the force of gravity alone, and is subjected to a variety of variable conditions. The effect of these variable influences upon' the calculation of capacity is now to be shown. In this paper, capacity will be discussed quite apart from any consideration of mechanical efficiency; that is, results will be stated not in terms of output per horsepower, but of output for a given machine when operated at a known speed, constructed and adjusted to receive material of a known size, and to yield a product having a definite maximum coarseness.

THE magneto-optic method of analysis had its origin in experiments1 which were designed to detect and measure a time lag in the Faraday effect and later to study this time lag as a function of the wave length of the light.2 Faraday discovered in 1845 that a beam of plane polarized light, when passed through a transparent, isotropic medium traversed by a magnetic field of force parallel to the direction of the light, suffers a rotation. The direction of rotation is reversed with the reversal of the magnetic field and its magnitude depends upon the strength of the field, the length of the path of light in the substance and the nature of the substance. This phenomenon of magnetic rotation is known as the Faraday effect. A question which had been of some interest for years was whether this power of a liquid to rotate polarized light is acquired instantly with the application of the magnetic field, that is, whether it is a case of instantaneity or whether there is a very small interval of time which intervenes between the application of the magnetic field and the consequent rotation of the light by the liquid; in other words, whether there is a time lag in the Faraday effect. Efforts to measure such a lag previously had met with failure. It was recognized at the outset' that since a time lag had escaped detection it must be extremely small, if to a measurable extent it exists at all. It became necessary therefore to adopt a timing device capable of making measures of almost infinitesimally small intervals. The velocity of light served as this timing device, a modification of a method originally employed by Abraham and Lemoine3 being adapted to the requirements of the problem. Since light travels about 30 cm. in a billionth of a second and since settings in our observations may be repeated with deviations not exceeding 3 mm.,

A short discission is given of the cryotron us a supercozductitzg- switch. The parameters of interest such as gaiz, critical gate current, critical control current, and critical surface current density ave described. The photomask-photoresist process makes possible the study of much narrower dimensioned cryotrons than previously possible using mask stencils. Data is given for the above parameters as a function of width, thickness, temperuture, and crossing ratio. Photographs of the various circuits used are shown. The techniques involved in making connection to the circuits and the precautions taken to avoid side effects in the measurements are discussed. In particular data is given for critical currents of sipercotzducting. lines down to 2X 104 in. A vise in critical surface current density is obserced jor the strallev lines in both lead and tin. A discussion of the ihact of these measurements in the design of future cryotron circuitry is given. In addition to the improvement in device density achieved by simple scale reduction. additonal gains in density may result through improved device form factor. THE cryotron is a superconducting current switch, invented by D. A. Buck.' Fig. 1 shows a typical crossed-film cryotron. Usually the gate is made of tin and the control is made of lead. The critical gate current, is the current that drives the gate resistive with zero current flowing in the control. The critical control current, I is defined as the current in the control necessary to switch the gate resistive with a small monitoring current in the gate. The gain of the device, G, is defined as Since for uniform thin films G should be proportional to the gate width divided by the control width, it is convenient to define the critical surface current density, Jcg, to be the critical gate current divided by the gate wldth. The data which follows will show that, for a given control width, I, is relatively constant. Thus, by measuring Jcg the change in gain as a function of gate width may be measured without measuring I,.

TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Gentlemen: - I herewith present a report of some. of the more important activities of the Institute for the year of 1922. The outstanding feature of the year is the optimism felt by our members despite the continued depression in the mining industry. January 1, 1921, found many of our members out of employment or drifting into other industries to tide them over the depression, but almost universally the feeling has been that this was but a temporary condition and that sooner or later the necessary production of raw materials would enable these members to return to their former activities and renew their participation in Institute affairs. As the year passed conditions improved and, before it ended, many had found employment in their previous occupations. Bearing in mind that this depression has been very real, we have reason to be well satisfied with the work that the Institute has been able to do. The loss of members through inability to pay, dues has been large, and income has been correspondingly reduced, but it proved to be materially in excess of that anticipated early in the year, so that a substantial and unanticipated balance was carried forward toward the activities of 1923. PUBLICATIONS Following the example of other technical societies, and to conserve our resources, no Year Book was published in 1922. The lack of an up-to-date membership list for the use of our members was regrettable, but the saving of $5000 proved to be worth while. During the year, Volumes LXV, LXVI, and LXVII were printed and sent to members. These volumes were composed largely of the papers of 1920 and 1921, publication of which had been delayed partly through lack of funds and partly for the purpose of segregating into volumes those papers dealing with the same general subject. The segregation of papers had been suggested by a number of members who had advised that they were not primarily interested in all subjects

The proper spacing of oil wells is a problem of vital importance to the oil industry. Conservation demands a maximum recovery, while economic considerations attach primary importance to profitable extraction of oil. Formulas have been evolved,1-4 which attempt to solve the spacing problem mathematically, using reservoir characteristics as factors. Comparisons have been made of fields producing from supposedly similar sands, which have been drilled to varying densitiesl5,6 and also of different leases in the same field. 5-8 Intermediate wells have been drilled in old, depleted fields to test the efficiency of drainage by the original operation.9-11 Intermediate wells have been drilled also to obtain cores of the depleted sand for analysis, from which to learn the degree of efficiency of extraction. The problem is being attacked by many students, and along several different lines. Unfortunately, the fields now depleted were produced generally without restriction, and conclusions drawn from them may not apply to fields operated under restricted production. Reservoir conditions in a restricted field, especially reservoir pressures and pressure gradients within the reservoir, are quite different from those in a field produced to capacity. Many people have held the idea that the closer the spacing, the greater the recovery. This general statement is not always true, as other factors than well spacing enter into the recovery problem. Cutler,5 who has been quoted frequently by advocates of close spacing, limited his conclusions to gas-drive fields, and to the particular fields and spac-ings that he investigated. Hill and Sutton7 analyzed four tracts in the Powell field; the tract most closely drilled had the third largest recovery per acre-foot, and the tract with the widest spacing had the second largest recovery per acre-foot. A search of the references to well spacing in the publications of the U. S. Bureau of Mines5,13-19 discloses repeated condemnations of the wastefulness of the practice of town-lot drilling.

THE Grossmann principle1 for the calculation of hardenability of steel from composition is attractive because of its simplicity. It postulates that the hardenability of a steel for any particular grain size may be expressed in terms of an ideal critical diameter, which is the product of an ideal critical diameter for a "pure" iron-carbon base multiplied by a succession of factors for each element of composition contained, including the incidentals. It infers that the multiplying factor for a given quantity of an element is constant for all combinations of composition. Grossmann has stated that in the great majority of cases the experimental values of hardenability are found to be well within 10 per cent of the calculated values. The validity of the scheme has been confirmed in principle by Crafts and Lamont2,3 and by Kramer et al .4 Their results differ from the original in the magnitude of the effect of some elements but, since they accepted the product concept and followed its direction, it is to be expected that similar results would be obtained. Crafts and Lamont, in their second paper, recognized that the factor relations for manganese and nickel were not continuously linear, but beyond certain critical amounts increase sharply. Austin, Van Note and Prater5 demonstrated nonlinear relations between hardenability and alloy contents. Their curves for chromium, silicon, manganese and nickel were all convex upward to show decreasing incremental effects. They concluded that Grossmann's factors underevaluate the hardening effect of low percentage additions of these elements, and overevaluate the larger additions. [ ] More recently W. Steven6 has found that the factor method fails when applied to complex steels containing two or three principal alloying elements other than carbon. Multiplying factors derived from his results bear a complex relation to composition and are not constant for a given amount of an element as the base composition varies. C. A. Efficient ventilation of metal mines consists in having such complete control of air currents that there is always supplied at placcs where men work sufficient moving air to allow working at maximum capacity without injury to health; and in case of underground fire or of surface fire in the vicinity of mine openings, underground air currents may be quickly reversed if desired, or air may be sent into or excluded from any region and fire fumes confined to only part of the mine workings, instead of penetrating practically the entire mine. Health and safety of workers in mines as well as proper safeguarding and operating efficiency of mining properties are so intimately associated with proper ventilation of mines (both coal and metal) that they are inseparable, yet ventilation is only too frequently neglected, especial1y in metal mines. The metalliferous operator, generally not confronted with inflammable gas or explosive dust which so frequently force ventilation of coal mines, usually disregards air supply altogether except such as may be obtained from compressed air; and generally, even when attention is given to metal-mine ventilation, the air currents rarely are found where they are needed, namely, the working places, especially the working faces. After several years' study of miners' consumption, the writer is convinced that long continued breathing of air impregnated with large quantities of any kind of finely divided dust, such as is found in a large number of the working places of our mines, will ultimately produce some respiratory disease, whether it be asthma, bronchitis, or phthisis; and the progress of these diseases is hastened if there are also present high temperatures, high humidities, or harmful gases or if there is present (and allowed to remain to be breathed) large quantities of the finely divided dust when air temperatures are low, hence favorable to maximum performance of work with accompanied maximum breathing into the respiratory passages of the harmful material. IN Bessemer-steel practice, air is blow, through a bath of iron, or projected strongly upon its surface to burn out silicon, manganese, and carbon. Toward the end of the blow, when the iron is not protected. from oxidation by these elements and the excess of air becomes great, there is oxidation of the iron. In open-hearth practice, the same difficulty is experienced with dissolved gas and oxides in the product, though not to as great or severe a degree as in the Bessemer process because the oxidizing conditions grow less severe as the end of the heat is approached, and if the bath is allowed to boil for a time it undoubtedly frees itself from a large part of the gas and oxides which have been absorbed in the earlier part of the process. Basic open-hearth steel is usually assumed to contain a larger proportion of oxides than acid open-hearth steel, but it may be said that all steel, Bessemer and open-hearth, contains more or less oxide of iron dissolved in the fluid metal at the end of the "blow" or "heat." That certain metals are solvents for their respective oxides has been shown, in the case of copper, by Heyn, and, in the case of iron, by Law. It is indicated that the solubility of iron oxide in iron increases with the purity and temperature of the metal. This confirms what is observed and known by operating men, and these observations may be summarized as follows: 1. Cast irons is rarely subject to oxidation, as is logical from its composition. 2. Normal steel, unless deoxidizers are added, contains blow holes. 3. Steel known to be oxidized is full of blow holes. 4. The addition of deoxidizers prevents, to a greater or less degree, the formation of blow holes in normal steel. With these observations in mind, it is logical to deduce that the cause of blowholes lies in part in the presence of dissolved oxide of. iron in the

Kamioka Mine of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd. is the largest lead-zinc mine in Japan and is composed of two mines, Tochibora Mine and Mozumi Mine, which have daily production rates of 5,200 metric tons and 1,800 metric tons of crude ore respectively. In the mines, there are many massive pyro-metasomatic deposits which have been derived from the replacement of limestone. The deposits are composed of skarn minerals which mainly contain hedenberite. The country rock is generally hard and fine-grained gneiss. These deposits have been mined by means of the sublevel stoping method, induced block caving method and sublevel caving method at Tochibora Mine and mainly by the cut and fill method at Mozumi Mine. Since the 19601s, the trackless mining system has been introduced successfully into both mines, and is still promoted to be applied over wider areas. The underground hauling system is simplified remark- ably and much improved by adopting trackless ramps to the existing vertical and horizontal underground framework. Moreover, through the combination of the trackless mining system with the mining methods stated above, a notable increase in efficiency has been achieved. This is due to the high performance of the introduced machinery, reductions in man power of miscellaneous jobs, and also has enabled a highly efficient performance through its mobility. In addition, as it becomes possible to realize a flexible development to meet the irregularly shaped deposits and also becomes much easier to recover the remaining pillars by secondary mining, the extraction rate of ore has been improved considerably. With the introduction of the trackless mining system, the development method has been changed, thus former hand-hold leg-drills are now mostly re- placed by jumbo-type drills. Repair shops for Load-Haul-Dump machines also have been provided with an established service system. Reinforcement and rearrangement of the ventilation system has been carried out.

LIQUID-OXYGEN explosives commonly consist of a carbonaceous absorbent enclosed in a canvas wrapper and soaked with a liquid containing more than 90 mol per cent of oxygen. Investigation of these explosives in this country was initiated in 1917 by George S. Rice, then Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau of Mines. The early development is summarized in two papers.1,2 Their characteristics, advantages and disadvantages were considered in a recent bulletin of the Bureau of Mines.,3 Other publications of this Bureau4, 5 treat the technology of these explosives and contain adequate references to pertinent literature. These investigations defined the properties of liquid-oxygen explosives and improved them greatly; however, an outstanding disadvantage is their high inflammability, a property of critical practical importance. These explosives as hitherto prepared are easily inflamed; the combustion resulting from an accidental ignition is particularly dangerous because of the ease with which it passes into detonation. For this reason the Bureau of Mines undertook a cooperative investigation, which has resulted in the development of fire-retardant treatment for the minimization or elimination of this hazard without materially impairing the explosive properties, including the ease of detonation. This presentation will offer a general description of the investigation and the outstanding results. Further phases will appear in subsequent short papers, and the entire investigation including the results of detailed experiments will be available in a forthcoming bulletin of the Bureau of Mines (Bull. 429). The effects produced by fire-retardant treatments of the carbonaceous absorbent and of the canvas wrappers were investigated separately, and the efficacy of combinations of these treatments with particular reference to the possibility of inflammation and to the development of detonation from inflammation was studied. IN the calculation of oil and gas reserves by volumetric methods, it is necessary to know the volume of the reservoir available for the storage of the oil or gas. To obtain this information, a number of methods for determining both total and effective porosity of reservoir rocks are used. For the determination of the total porosity, or the porosity that considers all of the pore spaces, connected and isolated, the Russell7,8,9 and the Melcher-Nutting1-6 methods are the best known and most- widely used in the petroleum industry. These methods have disadvantages in that they give the total porosity of the samples and in that the samples are reduced to grain size in the determination. In many sands there may be little or no difference between total and effective porosity but in other sands there may be considerable difference between the two. For the estimation of oil-and gas reserves the effective porosity of the reservoir rock always should be used. Of the methods that have been developed for the determination of the effective porosity of reservoir rocks, or the porosity that considers only those pore spaces that are connected, the best known are the so-called Boyle's law6,10-13, and the Washburn-Buntings.5,6,11 methods. The Wash-burn-Bunting method is probably the most widely used because it gives effective porosity, it is rapid, and the apparatus is inexpensive. This method employs a special porosimeter in which the core sample is placed in direct contact with mercury. This method has disadvantages in that, as a result of the high vacuum created in the pore spaces, mercury is drawn into the openings, making it impossible to use the sample for a check determination and also ruining the sample for any further test, such as permeability. The purpose of this paper is to describe an appa-ratus employing the same principle as the Washburn-Bunting method but so designed that the core sample does not come in contact with the mercury in the porosimeter.

The various modifications of the art of photography have become within the last few years the indispensable allies of every art and science. But, before the introduction of the process which is the subject of this paper, there was, so far as I am aware, no satisfactory means by which certain photographic negatives could be made to yield, without the intervention of the skilled draughtsman, electrotypes suitable for surface-printing. I refer to negatives taken from originals, such as natural objects, or or lithographs, in which the lights and shadows are not represented exclusively by lines and dots, such as can be photo-engraved. The greater usefulness to engineers and manufacturers of electrotypes as compared with lithographs is evident. The electrotypes can be kept indefinitely and used in the production of many thousand copies. They can be duplicated at trifling cost. They can be placed for printing together with the " forms " of type, or included in these, upon an ordinary press. Finally, they are cheap, when made mechanically from a suitable original. Various methods have been adopted for the preparation of such a secondary original (as it might be called) in cases where the first original is unsuitable for photo-engraving. Thus, for instance, portraits have been produced in electrotype from ordinary photographs as follows: A large negative is made of the original (say a carle de visite of a person deceased), and a proof taken, but not " fixed." Over this proof a skilled artist draws the portrait with a pen, producing a picture which resembles a line-engraving. The photographic proof, which has served merely to guide the artist, is now obliterated, and the pen-and-ink drawing is photo-engraved. Electrotypes thus produced often retain the likeness in a wonderful degree, and give spirited and satisfactory pictures. 1 may instance, as examples, which many will recollect, the portraits of our deceased members,

A massive transformation, 0 —am, takes place in a number of copper-based systems where the ß phase field at high temperatures extends to compositions that are slightly less solute-rich than the limits of the a phase field that exists at lower temperatures. Consequently a solid-state transformation becomes possible that does not involve a change of composition. Within this narrow range of composition the massive am phase can be usually produced in two ways: by a fast quench from the ß phase through the a phase field, or by pulse heating into the a phase field of an undecomposed ß phase retained at room temperature by a prior quench. In the Cu-Ga system the occurrence of a massive am phase has been also observed in alloys whose composition falls outside the equilibrium a phase field1 but not in the Cu-Zn system.2 We have recently observed the occurrence of the ß — am transformation also in two silver-based systems, Ag-Zn and Ag-Cd. The a and 0 phase fields in these systems again slightly "overlap" in a narrow composition range. In the Ag-Zn system this range falls between 36.7 and 40.2 at. pct Zn, and in the Ag-Cd system between approximately 41 and 42.5 at. pct Cd. Alloys were prepared from high-purity materials and cast in quartz tubes under inert atmosphere. No significant change of composition occurred during casting. After homogenizing in the 0 phase field, small pieces of each alloy were reheated at the homogenizing temperatures for a few minutes and quenched into various media. There were examined metallographic-ally after removal of surface layers that may have suffered from contamination or from the loss of the solute element. In the Ag-Zn system extensive areas of the am phase (identified by selective etching, observation of the slip trace variants, and occurrence of twinning) were observed in a comparatively low-zinc alloy (37.8 at. pct Zn) for all quenching media employed: iced

I HAVE read ill the Bulletin (May, '1914) a paper by H. von Höfer relating to the Origin of Petroleum, in which the author supports his and Engler's views, expressed before, of the organic origin of petroleum. Von Höfer pronounces strongly against the hypothesis of the volcanic origin of hydrocarbons, as particularly advocated by Eugene Coste. In Mr. Coste's articles, so well known by the public, he refers incidentally to our Mexican oil occurrences, especially of the Gulf coast, as proofs of the volcanic origin of the oils. This belief comes from the fact that, in our Mexican oil fields of the east coast, the majority of the producing wells are located near volcanic necks (remnants of small volcanoes, mainly of the explosive type), or near certain gibbosities in shales, resembling mounds, some of which' are really uplifts due to volcanic forces or to abortive eruptions. The first attempt to explain the oil coming up around volcanic necks in Mexico, was made by me in a small article1 published in 1905, soon after the investigation ordered by the Mexican government as to the outlook of the Mexican Gulf coast as a future oil producer. When E. L. Doheny of Los Angeles, Cal., and I located the first producing well of Mexico, I was also the first to predict the great future of the oil industry in Mexico, just at the time when the government and some Mexican geologists felt rather pessimistic. The Mexican investors and the general public, as a result of these discouragements, did not pay attention to this important source of common wealth until recent days. The realization of the value of this source of wealth has been so sudden that we are menaced by the consequences brought about by a great boom. It was quite impossible, about five years ago, to induce Mexican capitalists to invest money in oil lands. So the few large foreign companies operating since the beginning, easily secured large holdings, in spite of the trouble frequently resulting from faulty titles or ownership.

Great strides have been made during the past few years in the field of rock mechanics, and steps have been taken to implement our newly acquired knowledge to advance the mining industry and improve the lot of the miner. This article is a summary of the latest progress in those areas of rock mechanics indicated by the subtitles. Let's look at these new tools for mining men. GROUND STABILITY DETERMINATIONS Much valuable information in the field of rock mechanics can be obtained by relatively simple, inexpensive measurements and observations, and this kind of investigation can be classed under the general heading of "Ground Stability Determinations." The instrumentation involved in this type of work is relatively simple and inexpensive, and its operation is not difficult to understand.1,2 Precise deformation measurements accurate to a few thousandths of an inch are very helpful in detecting stope convergence, pillar compression, floor heave, etc. Such measurements recorded over a period of weeks and months will detect and forwarn against failure of the overall mine structure long before any other visual evidence can be observed. Such advance warning then permits the introduction of sufficient artificial support in time to do some good. Instead of precise measurements which must be made with a special instrument, sensitive warning lights can be used which will flash red upon sensing movements as small as .002 or .003 in. These devices are well received by miners, and very practical under noisy conditions. High precision is important tit this area, but in large openings, engineer's tapes plus machinists scales reading to .01 in. may be sufficient. Uniform tensioning of the tape is of course essential. Long term, precise measurements have shown repeatedly that opening convergence lends to be slow and uniform except when accelerated to sudden large displacements by blasting, rock bursts or other sudden large scale failures. It is interesting to note that measurements in South Africa in very deep mines have shown 40% of the closure was footwall rise, and only 60% was hanging-wall sag.
