An investigation of the behavior of inclusions in steel several years ago1 led to the conclusion that some of the commonly occurring inclusions in steel have appreciable solubilities, particularly in liquid steel. In the belief that further study and clarification of this matter was warranted, a laboratory study of oxides in liquid steel was started. These oxides are generally the result of deoxidation treatment, and the basis of an understanding of their behavior must be, therefore, the behavior of the deoxidizer in liquid iron. The Fe-Si-O system was selected for the first study, and the apparatus used and experiments conducted are described herein. Apparatus The apparatus is shown in Fig. r and the system is shown by diagram in Fig. 2. Furnace, A lmosphere Commercial hydrogen (1) passes through an orifice (2) into a manometric system that measures the tankside pressure (3) and the back pressure (4) in the system. A water trap (5) guards against excess tankside pressure. A by-pass with stopcocks (6 and 7) is provided, so that the hydrogen can be routed directly from the tank to the furnace if desired. When stopcock 7 is closed and stopcock 6 is open, the gas proceeds through the conditioning train, of which the first unit is a furnace (8) that contains platinized asbestos at 350°C. The temperature is measured by a thermocouple and potentiometer (9) and is controlled by a slidewire resistance (10). In this furnace fres oxygen is converted to water vapor. The exiting gas passes over a water bath (11) kept slightly below boiling temperature by an auxiliary heating unit (12). This unit also heats a surrounding copper coil (13) containing water, and the heated water rises through a collar (14)

The continuous process of lead refining as at present operated at the Port Piric plant of The Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary Ltd. was a development from investigations conducted in connection with the ordinary Parkes desilverizing process. It is not proposed here to discuss the theoretical considerations involved in continuous desilverizing because this aspect has already been dealt with in previous publications.1 Continuous Softening Process For economical desilverization of lead bullion, the bullion must first be subjected to refining processes for the removal of such impurities as copper, sulphur, arsenic, antimony and tin. This refining is effected by first drossing to remove copper and sulphur and then preferentially oxidizing the arsenic, antimony and tin from the bullion in the softening process. The theoretical basis of the continuous softening process is illustrated by the portion of the Pb-Sb-O ternary equilibrium diagram shown in Fig. 1. Under conditions of complete liquefaction, metal of the composition of softened bullion is in equilibrium with an oxide slag containing about 9 per cent antimony. In practice, of course, arsenic also is always present, and while the 0Pb-Sb-As-O quaternary system has not been worked out in detail, it has been found that in softening drossed smelter bullion of the composition produced at Port Pirie, arsenic is always reduced to 0.001 per cent or less when the antimony in the bullion is reduced to a satisfactory figure. In the operation of the continuous softening process, a two-phase system of a bullion low in arsenic and antimony and an oxide slag relatively high in those components exists in equilibrium. The occurrence of outcrops of bituminous schists and sandstones impregnated with heavy asphaltie petroleum first directed attention to the São Pedro area as a possible source of commercial production of petroleum. Since 1920, more than 20 wells have been drilled in this area. The discovery of oil shows and small quantities of natural gas in some of the early wells led to the continuation of drilling in the hope that more important findings would result. During the early part of 1934, detailed magnetometer observations were made in this area, and a considerable number of torsion balance stations were occupied. The results of these geophysical observations help considerably to clarify the structure of the area and the very considerable amount of geologic information available makes possible a much more exact interpretation of geophysical anomalies. In presenting the results of these observations, and interpretation of the geophysical data, certain actual case problems are included; i.e., geophysical anomalies due to anomalous masses of which the forms and positions are more or less known. Although anomalies due to igneous intrusions are probably more important to geophysicists in Brazil than in other countries, these data have a certain interest for all geophysicists, particularly because they were obtained in the south magnetic hemisphere, where the lines of magnetic force are directed upward, and in a region of moderately low inclination. This is considered as a geological-geophysical problem, and only passing mention will be given to the petroleum possibilities of the area. General Geology The location and general geology of the São Pedro area are shown in the sketch map of Fig. 1, which is adapted from the geologic map of South Brazil compiled by Oppenheim1,†- who gives the geologic column of South Brazil (So Pedro and vicinity) as follows:

The electrostatic process of fume precipitation is an excellent example of the successful application of scientific knowledge to an industrial operation. Originally proposed for the precipitation of sulfuric acid mists, it has been extended until at present there is practically no fume-carrying gas to which the method cannot be applied. Among the more common applications are: the recovery of non-ferrous smelter flue-dust, iron blast-furnace dust, cement dust, and potash fume. It should be borne in mind that the process is restricted to the precipitation of suspended particles, either liquid or solid, and does not separate gaseous constituents. However, by proper temperature control, mixtures of vapors having different temperatures of condensation to either solids or liquids may be selectively precipitated. The process consists essentially of subjecting suspended particles, including those too minute to be effectively acted upon by centrifugal or gravitational forces, to such an electrical force that they are driven from the gas stream, acting as a conveyer, and deposited upon a suitable receiving surface. This directional impulse is obtained from the interaction of charged particles and an electrostatic field of definite intensity gradient existing between two dissimilar electrodes, known as discharge and receiving electrodes. In principle, the equipment is equally simple. As shown diagrammatically in Fig. 1, it consists of: (1) A source of high-potential direct, current,, requiring: (a) Source of alternating-current energy. (b) Means of transforming from low voltage to high voltage. (c) Means of converting alternating to direct current. (2) Precipitation chamber having: (a) Transmission tubes for fume-laden gases. (b) Suitably designed and disposed electrodes. (c) Means for affecting removal of deposited solids. Strategically situated in almost the heart of the leading fertilizer-consuming area of the United States, Tennessee long has ranked second only to Florida as a phosphate-producing state. Since 1932 its share of the national output of phosphate rock has increased steadily, and in 1937 its production mounted to an all-time record. More significant even than the increase in tonnage are the forward strides in technology. The Tennessee Valley Authority's research program has led to quasicommer-cia1 operations using hydroelectric power to manufacture concentrated phosphatic fertilizer that is used to further the farmer education program designed to streamline the fertilizer business and halt the appalling waste of farm land by soil erosion. Even more stimulating to chemically minded imaginations is the production of elemental phosphorus by a private company that not only has succeeded in extracting it from the phosphate rock in electric furnaces but actually has contrived to capture it and to transport it safely in tank cars. New values have been created for low-grade phosphate deposits, and the economic life of reserves has been lengthened while the waste of former years goes back into the mills for recovery of its values by modernized methods. Tennessee's phosphate-mining industry dates from the discovery of blue rock in Lewis County in December 1893. Its known reserves are of the order of 101,500,000 tons, which compares with the production of 825,099 tons in 1937; that is, 21 per cent of the phosphate-rock output of the whole nation. The total output reported from 1894 until July 1. 1938, was approximately 19,000,000 tons. Offcial estimates of reserves are overly conservative and evidence submitted before a joint Congressional committee in November 1938 places "probable" reserves at more than 6,000,000,000 tons.

In recent years considerable effort has been expended in the search for new ways of drilling into the earth's crust and for improvements of existing methods. A number of novel techniques have been explored such as explosive, flame, electric arc, abrasive jet, chemical, and various percussion-type dri1ls.l Some of the new methods are useful in isolated situations, but rotary drilling continues to be the most versatile and generally economical method for rock drilling. An understanding of rock failure during drilling can lead to improved rotary drilling techniques and to the development of new methods. Experiments 2-4 have shown that rock strength and ductility increase with increasing pressure; therefore, meaningful experimental investigations should be carried out under conditions similar to those encountered at the depths to which oil wells are drilled. The action of a roller-cone bit is not pure rolling in all cases but frequently involves gouging and scraping action. However, vertical penetration of a horizontal rock surface by a single punch has served as a first approximation of the rock/bit tooth interaction during drilling.5,6 In these experiments semi-infinite smooth rock surfaces are indented by steel tools with configurations having various degrees of dullness. Both static and dynamic tests have been investigated; however, static loading provides a good approximation of the loading rates occurring during rotary drilling. As a more realistic approximation to actual drilling conditions, chip generation must also be considered. Recently, studies have been made of indexing or chipping from a bit tooth to a previously formed crater.7-9 The purpose of the present investigation is to study indexed penetrations in greater detail. The requirements of coals for the manufacture of coal gas, water gas and producer gas will be considered sparately and a short description of each gasmaking process will be given. In this report the term "gas coal" is confined to coals suitable for the manufacture of city gas in horizontal, inclined or vertical retorts. The report does not refer to coke-oven practice.' Briefly, the process of manufacture consists of distilling the coal at high temperature in an externally heated retort out of contact with the air. The products of distillation, consisting of gas, tar, ammonia, etc. are collected and purified. The residue consists of coke, which is removed from the retort at the end of the carbonizing period. To supply the heat required in the process, a portion of the coke produced is converted into producer gas, which is burned under the retort settings. Qualities of Gas Coals The chief qualities that coal must possess in order to be classified as a gas coal are as follows: 1. Gas Yield.—The coal must be capable of yielding gas in sufficient volume and of a satisfactory quality. The yield depends considerably upon the temperature of distillation; a higher temperature will give a larger yield of gas, but the qualit,y of gas (now measured by the British thermal units per cubic foot) will be lower, while a lower carbonizing temperature will give less gas of higher heating value. The true measure of the yield is the number of British thermal units produced in the gas from a given quantity of coal. This number is obtained by multiplying the cubic feet of gas from 1 lb. of coal by the British thermal units per cubic foot of gas; it is called B.t.u. feet per pound. It is found that the

The suggestion has often been made that it would be highly desirable, at least for certain grades of steel, to be able to control more certainly, by pyrometric measurement or otherwise, the temperatures of the operation of the open-hearth and other furnaces used in the manufacture of steel and iron. That the properties of the ingot and finally of the finished steel product are intimately related to the final temperatures attained by the metal in the furnace and to the temperature of casting, has been recognized by metallurgists for a long time, and this question has been very thoroughly treated, especially by Prof. Henry M. Howe, and by A. W. and H. Brearley.1 It is the object of this paper to demonstrate that in so far as casting temperatures of furnaces, steel ingots, and similar operations involving the temperatures of streams of iron and steel are concerned, well-known pyrometric methods may be easily applied—if certain recently determined corrections are made and precautions taken—with a relatively high degree of accuracy. Greater but not insurmountable difficulties will be encountered in the case of open-hearth furnace temperatures, while for those of the converter type a ready solution does not seem practicable. It appears that certain essential data have always been lacking in reporting observations such as those of Le Chatelier in 1892. Thus the correction to be applied for the characteristic radiation—or emissivity— has hitherto not been adequately taken into account nor the limitations of the several possible pyrometric methods clearly recognized. In view of the fact that in open-hearth practice the temperature to be measured in the furnace itself, in the stream of metal and slag and in the teeming into molds or ingots is usually above 1,500" C. (2,700" F.)

Preliminary investigations were undertaken with a Megger Ground Tester in 1931 by Hubbert to determine whether the faults in Hardin County, Illinois, could be located by earth-resistivity surveys. The results of these investigations, which were in part presented before this Institute in 1932,1 were sufficiently promising to warrant a more extensive field program in the same general area the following summer. During the second season an apparatus of the Gish-Rooney type was employed because of its greater sensitivity and to avoid the troublesome correction for resistance of potential electrodes necessitated by the use of a Megger instrument. The discussion of earth-resistivity traverses which constitute the main part of this paper is based entirely upon the results of the second season's work. All of the traverses were made with a constant electrode spacing of a equal to 100 ft., and the four-electrode technique was employed. Successive stations in these traverses were spaced at intervals of 100 ft. and the line of electrodes was carried parallel to the line of traverse. The graphs of resistivity profiles presented here (Figs. 1 to 3) are plotted with resistivities in ohm-centimeters as ordinates and with distance divided into stations at 100-ft. intervals as abscissas. After the traverses were run by Hubbert the results were computed, the profiles plotted, and tentative interpretations were made by him. These curves and interpretations were then taken into the field by Wellcr, who made a careful geological examination along the lines of traverse for the purpose of checking and supplementing Hubbert's interpretations. Weller then constructed a geologic cross-section extending along the line of each traverse. The accompanying diagrams graphically illustrate the correlation that can be made between earth resistivity and geology in this area.

OIL-WELL depletion curves, to be of value, should show when a well or lease may no longer be operated at a profit. The difference, at any time, between the total expenditures and the total income of a lease or well may be called the lease status. Plotting this lease status against time will give a curve subject to more accurate and different interpretations than the barrels-time curves. According to the hypothetical barrels-time curves shown in Fig. 1, well A, at the end of 16 mo., is producing twice as much oil as well B and will continue to produce for another year whereas well B will cease producing in about 6 months. Ewers (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research organization, Melbourne, Australia)— Any attempt to elucidate further the meaning of the contact angle, particularly if it deals with the magnitudes of those mysterious quantities rsa and YRL, is certain to receive attention from those interested in the fundamentals of flotation. It is imperative, therefore, that attention should be drawn to a serious defect in the treatment by de Bruyn, Overbeek, and Schuhmann. Their Eq. 5 dy = — ld/u — Th2odiH2n states correctly the relationship between the change in surface free energy dy, the surface excesses Tx and Th2o of the components x and H2O and the changes du, and dph2o in the chemical potentials of these components. This equation applies for constant pressure and con- stant temperature and for the interface of the solid in contact with the solution of X. The relation remains valid when 1.1 is defined so that TH2O becomes zero and the equation becomes dr = — r:dur [17] From this equation de Bruyn et al. correctly concluded that increased adsorption of the collector at the liquid solid interface would reduce the interfacial energy ysl. Their second conclusion, however, that an increase in the contact angle, corresponding to a greater decrease in rsa than in rsL can be attributed to greater adsorption of X at the solid-air interface than at the solid-liquid interface is quite unjustified. THIS investigation of antimony-selenium alloys was undertaken in an attempt to find a suitable material for use in power-generating thermocouples. The chief requirements for such a material are high thermoelectric power, low electrical resistivity and low thermal conductivity. Measurements of the first two properties mentioned are usually sufficient to determine whether or not a material is suitable for use in a thermoelectric generator. As a first approximation the requirements are: 1. Thermoelectric power greater than 200 microvolts per °C. 2. Electrical resistivity less than 0.002 ohm-cm. 3. Thermal conductivity less than 0.015 watt per cm per "C. These quantities are averages for the Operating temperature range. Previous Work Experimental investigations of equilibrium in the antimony - selenium system have been summarized by Han-sen². These investigations extended from 1906 to 1921. In Hansen's judgment, the most accurate phase diagram is that determined by Parravano, in 1913 and this is reproduced in the upper part of fig. 1. The most notable parts of this diagram are the liquid miscilibility gap, extending from about 12 to 36 wt pct selenium, and the intermediate phase Sb2Se3 containing 49.3 wt pct selenium. The crystal structure of Sb2Se3 has not been determined. Pelabon3,4 made measurements of the electrical resistivity of a few antimony-selenium alloys but his investigation was not very complete. He found that the resistivity increased with the selenium content and became very large as the composition of Sb2Se3 was approached. For alloys containing less than 50 at. pct (39.3 wt pet) selenium, he found that the resistivity increased regularly with temperature. The spheroidal form of the temper carbon nodules in malleable cast iron and of the graphite mottles of "mottled" cast iron suggests that in both all the graphite in a given mottle or nodule grew from a single center of crystallization or nucleus. $ There is, however, a distinct metallo-graphic difference between the mottle and the nodule; the area of mother metal impoverished in combined carbon by the crystallization of graphite in a mottle is practically coextensive with the ramifications of the graphite, while the impoverished zone of metal corresponding to a given nodule is always larger, and usually much larger, than the approximately spherical mass of graphite crystals forming the nodules. Furthermore, the mottle probably is formed during freezing and the nodule almost always at a considerably lower temperature. Assuming that the nodules or mottles can be used as a measure of the existing nuclei (capable of germination) we propose to record certain observations as to the graphitizing reaction in the light of the number and habits of growth of these nuclei. The present authors, in cooperation with others'-', have reported upon various cognate aspects of the problem. The fact that temper carbon is a mass of flakes and not a solid granule has become well recognized since the introduction of an improved polishing technique8, 9, 10 for cast iron. The spheroidal form of the temper carbon nodules in malleable cast iron and of the graphite mottles of "mottled" cast iron suggests that in both all the graphite in a given mottle or nodule grew from a single center of crystallization or nucleus. $ There is, however, a distinct metallo-graphic difference between the mottle and the nodule; the area of mother metal impoverished in combined carbon by the crystallization of graphite in a mottle is practically coextensive with the ramifications of the graphite, while the impoverished zone of metal corresponding to a given nodule is always larger, and usually much larger, than the approximately spherical mass of graphite crystals forming the nodules. Furthermore, the mottle probably is formed during freezing and the nodule almost always at a considerably lower temperature. Assuming that the nodules or mottles can be used as a measure of the existing nuclei (capable of germination) we propose to record certain observations as to the graphitizing reaction in the light of the number and habits of growth of these nuclei. The present authors, in cooperation with others'-', have reported upon various cognate aspects of the problem. The fact that temper carbon is a mass of flakes and not a solid granule has become well recognized since the introduction of an improved polishing technique8, 9, 10 for cast iron. The problem of deriving from the circular planar intercepts of a mass of spheres of varying sizes their number and size distribution in space has also been satisfactorily solved12, 13 Growth of Nuclei in White Cast Iron It has already been shown1, 3 that the progress of graphitization with time is usual1y consistent with the assumption that nodules grow in size

Statistics compiled by the United States Geological Survey show that the iron ore mined in the United States in 1917 reached a total of 75,288,851 gross tons, exceeding the former record output of 1916 by 121,179 tons. The shipments from the mines in 1917 were 75, 573,181 gross tons, valued at $238,260,333, a decrease in quantity of 2,297,372 tons, or 2.95 per cent., and an increase in value of $56,358,056, or 30.98 per cent., over the shipments in 1916. The average value per ton at the mines for all grades of ore in 1917 was $3.15 as against $2.34 in 1916. Stocks of iron ore at mines, mainly in Minnesota and Michigan, amounted at the close of 1917 to 10,628,908 gross tons, compared with 10,876,352 gross tons in 1916. The quantity of pig iron, exclusive of ferro-alloys, sold or used in 1917, according to reports of producers to the United States Geological Survey, amounted to 38,612,546 gross tons, valued at $1,053,785,975; compared with 39,126,324 gross tons, valued at $663,478,118 in 1916, a decrease of 1.32 per cent. in quantity and an increase of 59 per cent. in value. The average price per ton at furnaces in 1917, as reported to the Survey, was $27.29, compared with $16.96 in 1916, an increase of 61 per cent. The production of pig iron, including ferro-alloys, was 38,647,397 gross tons in 1917, compared with 39,434,797 gross tons in 1916, a decrease of 4.5 per cent., according to figures published by the American Iron and Steel Institute, March 18, 1918.

TIE fundamental principle of resistance thermometry lies in the determination of temperatures by the measurement of an electrical conductor subjected to various temperatures and the translation of the resultant changes, in ohms, into temperature equivalents. Such resistance measurements can be made with maximum precision by the use of a standard Wheatstone bridge and a reflecting galvanometer of high sensitivity. Under such conditions, results are obtainable that may be accurate within 0.1 or even 0.01 per cent., and the "idiosyncrasies" of heated electrical conductors can be studied with advantage and profit, even if the latter is not of a financial nature. The chief requisites for producing a serviceable -commercial instrument may be enumerated as follows: First, there must be a resistor or "bulb" that can stand the maximum temperature without deterioration and which has a pronounced temperature coefficient. Second, there should be constructed an "even" bridge, having two fixed arms of equal values, in ohms. Third, a rheostat, the maximum resistance of which will be equal to the total change in the resistance of the bulb, between temperature extremes, is required. Fourth, there must be a sensitive galvanometer which is aperiodic, or nearly so. Finally, there should be a fairly steady source of direct current. The general scheme of this type of apparatus, in its simplest form, can be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1. Resistors A and B are constructed of manganin, therlo, or some other resistance wire having a negligible temperature coefficient. The sensitive D'Arsonval galvanometer G has its zero in the center. R is a rheostat and X is a resistor or bulb made of insulated platinum wire, or else of nickel, copper, or some alloy, according to requirements. K is a battery, but a direct-current service line is often used instead, with sufficient ballast in series to properly reduce the current.
