FROM their investigation of the martensitic transformation in Cu-Zn alloys, Greninger and Mooradian' concluded that there was no critical temperature at which martensite formation began in this system. Recent unpublished work by Gen-evray With two compositions of brass revealed the existence of a critical temperature, which is a function of composition and stress. In the work reported here the temperature range of the martensitic reaction was studied as a function of composition in high purity Cu-Zn alloys. The specimens were about 4 in. long with a diameter of 1/16 in.; their compositions are given in Table I. They were heated under vacuum for 5 min at 5" to 10°C below the temperature of incipient melting, and quenched into brine at about — 10°C. Specimens of alloys C, D, E and F were obtained with little or no precipitated a phase. Many attempts yielded only three usable specimens of alloy B, and even these contained appreciable amounts of a. All efforts failed to preserve metastable p in alloy A (containing 38.02 pct Zn and 0.002 pct each of Pb and Fe). The transformation was studied by measuring the electrical resistance during continuous cooling and heating of each specimen at similar rates. The cooling media were alcohol with dry ice from room temperature to — 78°C and a bath of petroleum ether and methyl cyclohexane (75:25), cooled by liquid nitrogen, from —78" to about —150°C. The general application of Darcy's law to natural rocks has already been challenged in the literature.1 The evidence shows that the permeability as calculated from the Darcy equation can be a function of the pressure drop and the salt concentration of the water phase. Most explanations for aberrant behavior involve clays and their properties and have been qualitatively satisfactory.Recently, however, Odeh2 revived the theoretical views of Yuster.3 Since Yuster's concept implies a fundamental error in using Darcy's relationship for two-phase flow, and not merely that conditions may limit its use, Odeh's experimental support arouses considerable interest. However, Odeh's work as presented is thought to to be inadequate. He has omitted important information about his materials and procedures; therefore, acceptance of his conclusions should be withheld. Since a clay effect is possible, Odeh should have been allowed space to present a more detailed account of the rocks which he used and the precautions which he took to avoid confounding the effects of clay and fluid circulation. In addition, it follows from Odeh's discussion that the oil relative permeability should increase as the viscosity ratio increases. Odeh presents data corroborating this deduction. It also follows that the oil relative permeability should decrease as the viscosity ratio of oil to water decreases. However, our results show that a high relative permeability, when once attained by using a viscous oil, may be maintained when that oil is replaced by an oil of much lower viscosity. The purpose of this paper is to review the more important developments in the production of petroleum during 1930 in Texas, excluding the Panhandle and Gulf Coast districts, giving emphasis to trends rather than to statistics. Outstanding Developments Aside from increasing curtailment of drilling operations and general prorating of production by state authority the most noteworthy developments for the year appear to have been: 1. Demonstrations of the fictitiousness of potentials as shown first by Darst Creek pool, rated at 180,000 bbl. and having actually 78,000 bbl. daily, and especially by the Hendricks pool of Winkler County, with potential of about 1,000,000 bbl. daily in mid-year and production of only 52,000 bbl. daily when opened to continuous full production in December. 2. Rapid development of the Darst Creek pool under competitive drilling. 3. Orderly and highly successful development of the Van pool under unit operation. 4. Failure of several highly rated structures southwest and northeast of Van. 5. Extension of the deep Simpson production at Big Lake and increased interest in these pre-Mississippian pays in North Central Texas and West Texas. 6. Discovery of prolific wells in northwest Rusk County from sands of Upper Cretaceous age, portending a rapid and extensive development campaign around the northwest margin of the Sabine uplift. The principal object of an underground coal mine transportation sys tem is to move coal from the face where it is produced to the outside of the mine where it is prepared for market. In addition to the movement of coal, a transportation system must also move supply materials to the inside; it must move men in and out of the mine ; and it must move rock and other debris out of the mine for disposal. Usually, mine haulage is divided into three categories named for the various areas of the mine served: 1) Face Haulage. This is used at face from the mining machine to the intermediate transport system. 2) Intermediate or Secondary Haulage. Generally this is used between face haulage and main haulage. Sometimes this is merely an extension of the main haulage. 3) Main Haulage. This extends from the secondary haulage to the outside and is usually either a track or conveyor system, sometimes a combination of both. Transportation modes of coal in the various areas pose different problems, but the whole system must be synchronized. For instance, at the face the coal should be removed quickly from the various places to facilitate the movement of machines, whereas the intermediate system just passes the same coal on to the main transportation system. Selection of the transportation system must be based on the seam height, mining methods used to extract the coal, capacity required, ease of coal handling, and haulage efficiency. When driving rooms, mine cars can be used. They often simplify supply haulage and rock handling because they can also handle these items. Conveyors could be used and would have a greater haulage capacity but they cannot handle supplies easily or segregate the rock. When using a different mining method, such as longwall, mine cars cannot be used because there is not sufficient space to move the cars at the face nor can the cars haul the coal without delays which would cause excessive losses in production. In September, 1930, H. N. Eavenson, then Chairman of the Coal Division, appointed a Committee on Methods of valuing Coal Propelvties, with John B. Dilworth as chairman. The latter prepared a schedule' of features for consideration under the general headings of Undeveloped and Developed Coal Properties. These subjects were divided among the members of the committee and during the next year written discussions of his allotted subjects were received from each member. Mr. Grimes and Mr. Eavenson discussed the entire list,. These discussions were mimeographed and a set sent to each member before the meeting of the Institute in February, 1932. There was a general discussion at that meeting. At the meeting in February, 1934, Mr. Dilworth submitted a report12 which summarized the accumulated opinions and data and presented the conclusions of the committee as a whole on the subjects embraced in it's schedule. Members of the committee expressed the desire that some of the individual opinions be published for reference. Mr. R. THE SECRETARY The year 1917 has been a notable one in Institute affairs. The usual activities, including meetings, publications, local section interests, library service, and so-forth, have been continued on at least the same scale as previously, and in addition the resources of the Institute have been placed without stint at the service of the Nation, not only for the active prosecution of the military side of the war, but even more especially in the industrial operations which form the very basis of modern warfare. The officers and directors of the Institute have labored both officially and individually, while the Institute as a body, through committees of, prominent members, and through many individual members, has given freely. Finally, Institute funds have been appropriated to an amount exceeding $5000 to accomplish the cooperation with Government bureaus, and provide committee expenses necessary for performing the services that have been given. The President of the Institute had a very large personal share in many of these activities, which will be described in the following pages, as well as in the President's own report. Many of the Institute's members are giving their whole time for. $1 a year, or less, and especial mention should be made of Herbert C. Hoover, Food Administrator, W. L. Honnold, Head of the Commission for Relief in Belgium, Mark L. Requa, Petroleum Administrator, Edgar Rickard and Charles W. Merrill of the Food Administration, S. A. Taylor of the Fuel Administration, W. L. Saunders, B. B. Thayer and Joseph W. Richards who .are giving a. large share of their time to the Naval Consulting Board, W. Y. Westervelt, W.0. Hotchkiss and Harvey S. Mud of the War Minerals Committee, David W. Brunton of the War Committee of Technical Societies, and hundreds of others whose names are mentioned in the Honor Roll of Members. It has also been a notable year in cooperation with sister-societies. The most important event under this head was the accession of the American Society of Civil Engineers into the fraternity of Founder Societies.

A PRevioUs study1 of the relations of impact strength to inclusions showed that the dynamic strength of steel is lowered by the presence of visible counted inclusions, but that other factors comprised in the term "body" have a marked influence. The previous work was carried out on selected steels from a single source, so that the body factor was purposely minimized, but even under these conditions it was found that inclusion counting or the use of the commercial inclusion rating is not satisfactory. The tensile-impact test, however, was indicated as a satisfactory measure of dynamic strength. It was further suggested that the tensile-impact test should be so standardized as to be suitable for use in specifications, and that the hardness factor should be worked out over a sufficient range to admit ready commercial use of the tensile-impact test. In accordance with these suggestions, and in view of the fact that the steels reported in the previous paper were selected and treated so as to have a minimum variation in body, hardness and structure, further work has been performed on a variety of steels which are not limited by these conditions. The word "body" is used here for want of a better term. It is simply a convenient expression which comprises the effect, of the various unknown factors that modify the dynamic strength of the steel. Thus at our present state of knowledge, the writers have chosen to consider hardness, structure and counted inclusion content as factors not comprised in the term "body," and such factors as raw materials, process of melting, fabricating, etc., as comprised in the term "body." Numerous grades of steels made in several ways have been taken from different sources and have been heat-treated to varying hardness by normalizing and by quenching and drawing. The results, therefore, may be considered to be generally applicable to current engineering steels. The effect of stress on the creep rate of high-purity poly crystalline aluminum in the intermediate temperature range was investigated by conducting creep tests at a series of different stresses and by decreasing the stress abruptly during the course of primary and secondary creep. Three series of decreases in stress tests were conducted: the stress was decreased in primary and secondary regions of creep at 347.5°K and the stress was decrensed in primary creep at 327°K. The results demonstrate the effects of structure and temperature on the stress dependence of the creep rate. The trends in the creep rate after a drop in stress are complicated and show that recovery takes place. The experimental results were compared with Friedel's theory for cross-slip, the experimentally determined energy for a constriction being in good agreement with the theoretical estimate proposed by Stroh. PREVIOUS investigations have shown that the ap-- parent activation energy for creep of polycrystalline aluminum, over the range from about 250° to 380°K, is approximately 27,400 cal per mole,' a value that is to a first approximation insensitive to the applied stress, the creep rate, and the creep strain. Several facts strongly support the thesis that creep, in this temperature range, is controlled by the rate-determining mechanism of cross-slip: 1) Recovery of the cold-worked state can take place by a number of mechanisms prominent among which is climb and cross-slip. Astrom2 reported rapid recovery of cold-worked polycrystalline aluminum at 340° to 370°K giving an activation energy of 28,000 cal per mole and additional recovery at the higher temperatures of 455° to 478°K giving an activation energy of 36,000 cal per mole. Whereas the latter process was clearly identified with the climb mechanism, the former process. which has an activation energy in good agreement for that of creep in the same temperature range, is most likely due to recovery by thermally-activated cross-slip. 2) Single crystals of aluminum exhibit sharp slip-

THE outstanding fact in connection with dust disease in the United States at present is the growing recognition of its seriousness by state officials and by the more progressive operators of mining, metallurgical and allied industrial plants. The same may perhaps be said of labor in some of its better organized centers, but the average independent non-union workman continues, as of yore, to suffer the toll of disability and even of death from dust inhalation without realization of the source of his ill-being. Progress in the betterment of the handling of sufferers from dust disease and of the conditions creating dust hazards in mining and allied industries is pursuing a course similar to that of the now widespread campaign against accidents, in which the risk is more obvious, more severe, and was naturally recognized. sooner. The coming on of dust disease is generally relatively slow and its immediate effects not infre-quently masked by or attributed to other diseases. Marked exceptions to this general rule have occurred in districts where the dust is particularly pernicious, such as the Rand and Joplin; yet such exceptions, unhappy in themselves, opened the eyes of medical men, and of those in other localities charged with the responsibility for the welfare of industry, to the much more widespread if less spectacular hazard existing from the inhalation of dust in all rock-excavating operations and all industrial operations creating inorganic dust, whether it be crushing and grinding, sand-blast-ing, granite-cutting, or what not. Advancement to date in the United States in prevention and treat-ment has been slow, yet the record shows that quantitative methods for determining the degree of hazard and means for decreasing it were being developed as far back as 25 years ago; and that more rapid progress may be looked for from now on. In 1908, in this country, F. L Hoffman?(1) discussed the mortality from consumption in dusty trades, especially brass foundries; and in 1913 E. R. Hayhurst(2) described the effects of inhalation

As an industry approaches stabilization, greater and greater stress must be laid on its technologic progress, which becomes a prime aid in improving its condition. The oil industry is tending toward this stage and hence its engineers must be pressed into greater service to prevent stabilization and stagnation from becoming synonymous, and to supply, either by improvements in processes or by new machinery, a means of obtaining savings in raw and finished products. Thus profits can be assured warranting continued investment. It may be repeated, technology must apply a slight improvement here, a change there, or a complete renovation, to eliminate inefficiencies and make each dollar invested yield greater results. The profits of ycstcrday were made of rich strikes, of monopolized patents or processes, of control of prices and of markets. Sixty-five years of growth, of large investment, of healthful competition, and of expanding markets, have put the oil industry in the foremost rank of world industries. .Just as the railroads passed a similar period of expansion and growth, and arc being stabilized with reasonable profits, so the oil industry must take advantage of the efforts of its engineers and experts to promote its healthful growth and a better service to the people. Herein is attempted a review of recent progress in which is presented the advances in exploration, production engineering, transportation, refining and greater efficiency in uses of petroleum, with a view not only to stressing important new processes and methods, but also the problems that press for solution. This review can only touch outstanding developments of recent years, but the several Petroleum Division symposiums of our program will present details worthy of attention. Exploration Geology offers directly little new in the technique of oil-finding— major stress being laid on improvement in subsurface correlation by means of foraminifera1 studies, additions to the knowledge of which are being made, slowly but surely, and by means of mineral, and especially heavy mineral, determinations in well samples. That our American civilization will have extensive postwar problems in such fields as economics, unemployment, and social adjustment is now well understood by all readers of the press and listeners to the radio. But precious little is heard from these sources regarding the impact of the war on education, though education is one of the fields where the effect of the war is going to be felt most-for youth is fighting the war. Unquestionably, serious educational problems will ;rise in the postwar period, challenging the best efforts of our educators. Most acute will be the problems at the college level of education, for it is this age group that will have had its educational process most thoroughly disrupted. The return of these students to our college and university campuses wiI1 bring about a new set of conditions which we might as well try to foresee and begin to prepare for now. To begin with, the average returning college student who has had his education interrupted by war service will certainly be more mature in both years and mental outlook, and possibly married. As a result he will want to finish his college education as quickly as possible. His natural action will be to shop around among the various schools of the country to see where he can get the most credit for work he has done or thinks he has done. It is just possible that what might impolitely be termed "dark - market" schools may arise to cater to his needs. These schools will not think of them- selves in this light, of course, but will be conscious only of a keen sympathy for the veteran student and an urgent desire to help him solve his pressing problems. A considerable number of American colleges are going to be pretty well impoverished before this present war is ended and unless some professional organization takes it upon itself to place this possible situation under supervision and regulation, we may well suffer a serious setback to the

C. H. MATHEWSON, New Haven, Conn. (written discussion *).-In a recent discussion of Dr. Jeffries' paper on tungsten,1 J. C. W. Humfrey,2 after taking exception to certain of the author's ideas relative to the cohesion of A and C metal, expresses the opinion that future research is likely to develop a method of preparing tungsten possessing "mechanical properties in line with those of other metals." The present paper by Dr. Jeffries begins with a determination of comparative properties of tungsten, copper, and iron, in which much dissimilarity is apparent, and ends with a coherent explanation as to why much of this dissimilarity is natural and inevitable, thereby supplying theoretical means for visualizing the changing properties of metals in general, once certain fundamental facts are known. The author's reasoning is primarily from the standpoint of the amorphous theory and his principal achievement is the development of an idea f differential cohesion according to conditions of temperature, etc., between A and C metal (which was first plainly suggested by Rosehain and Ewen, in their papers on Intercrystalline Cohesion of Metals) along with associated ideas, so as to give us a really useful working theory. I have come rather reluctantly to believe in the amorphous theory, or some theory admitting a modification of the ordinary crystalline phase so as to permit differential properties within the conglomerate, mainly because in no other way does it seem possible to account for observed changes of properties with temperature, etc. The very best illustration f the competency f the amorphous theory in this respect is seen in this and other recent papers by the author. All fractures through normal or healthy metal that have been preceded by deformation are supposed, by Dr. Jeffries, to take place either through the amorphous phase or at certain boundaries between amorphous and crystalline material; his reference to fractures, both members of which are similar in appearance and do not reveal a preexisting coarse-grained structure because of a coating of amorphous metal, indicates his preference for the former interpretation.

For several years this Institute has recorded in its Transactions the various discoveries of potash‡ in America, and the successive stages in the development of an independent domestic potash industry. This paper is intended primarily to continue the record through the year 1935. In retrospect it is not inappropriate to note that public interest aroused in 1910 resulted in the production of some 1090 tons of pure potash in 1915, as a small beginning in the domestic inorganic potash industry, and that the infant industry thus begun reaches its majority this year, following a record production in 1935 of about 600,000 tons of potash salts and exports to no less than 22 foreign countries, including six countries in Europe. This production, with an estimated 200,000 tons of pure potash, may be compared with a production in 1934 of 430,157 tons of salts with an equivalent of 144,342 tons of pure potash. Mine and Plant Improvement During 1935, the American Potash & Chemical Co., at Searles Lake, Calif., began to reap the benefits of its previously enlarged plant facilities, which increased its productive capacity to 180,000 tons of muriate annually. The United States Potash Co., at Carlsbad, N. Mex., improved its operations by installing trolley locomotives and other haulage facilities and is maintaining its development headings two years in advance of operations, with projected plans for orderly mining for years to come. The hoisting shaft at its mine is now equipped to hoist at the rate of 1,000,000 tons annually, and the refinery to produce 150,000 tons of muriate containing less than one per cent of impurities. The Potash Co. of America, at Carlsbad, N. Mex., completed the conversion of its plant from a prospecting to an operating basis late in 1935. Mex., improved its operations by installing trolley locomotives and other haulage facilities and is maintaining its development headings two years in advance of operations, with projected plans for orderly mining for years to come. The hoisting shaft at its mine is now equipped to hoist at the rate of 1,000,000 tons annually, and the refinery to produce 150,000 tons of muriate containing less than one per cent of impurities. The Potash Co. of America, at Carlsbad, N. Mex., completed the conversion of its plant from a prospecting to an operating basis late in 1935. ABOUT six years ago the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. decided to investigate the possibility of extracting zinc from the ores of certain mines in the Butte district. These ores are of a complex character and contain so much iron and lead that the concentrate contains only 33 to 35 per cent. zinc. Investigations showed that while a high-grade concentrate could not be obtained by ordinary methods, such as tabling and magnetic treatment, a fair grade could be made by the Horwood process. In this method, the concentrate resulting from the flotation of all of the sulfides is given a light roast and this calcine is subjected to flotation in the presence of a large amount of sulfuric acid; the resulting concentrate contains most of the zinc and a residue contains most of the iron. The fact that the lead, copper, and silver are divided approximately equally between the zinc concentrate and the iron residue and the large consumption of acid, which ranged from 50 to 100 lb. (22 to 45 kg.) per ton of concentrates, were serious objections to this plan. The zinc recovery, moreover, was low, as a considerable percentage invariably accompanied the iron. While a profit might be made on the ores by the use of this process, it was thought that other and more promising methods might be devised. After carefully studying the field and doing some laboratory work on various processes that had been suggested, it was decided that the electrolysis of sulfate solutions was the most promising. We soon found, as have other investigators, that the only way to obtain a good zinc deposit is to have the electrolyte free from all metals more electro-negative than zinc, such as copper, cadmium, lead, arsenic, antimony, etc. Arsenic and antimony are particularly injurious, causing very poor current efficiency and small yield per horsepower when present in amounts so small as almost to defy detection-1 mg. or less per liter.

During the heating of cold-worked nickel silver, the tendcncy of the material to crack is well known. The present research deals with this question, and may conveniently be divided into the following sections: Changes in these alloys during heating and cooling, determination of the temperature at which cracking occurs, effect of grain size, quenching cracks, methods of overcoming annealing cracking. The work is far from complete, in particular the influence of impurities on this tendency has not been investigated, but the results so far obtained lead to certain definite conclusions, which are of theoretical and practical importance. Changes in Alloys During Heating and Cooling During the annealing of many metals at a temperature just below that at which recrystallization sets in, there is evidence of some change, the effect of which is to harden and embrittle the material. This effect has been most clearly demonstrated in the cases of aluminum, copper, brass, and nickel silver, and appears to be a common property of cold-worked metals and alloys, or, at any rate, the non-ferrous ones. The effect would obviously offer an explanation for certain types of annealing cracking, but the trouble is so much more common in the nickel silvers than in the other alloys that some special cause should be looked for. There is, however, fairly good reason for believing that similar cracking may occur in some of the brasses; D. Bunting1 suggests that the a brasses toward the saturation limit are subject to a transformation closely allied in nature to that known to occur in the nickel silvers at around 320" C. Although the existence of this critical temperature range was known, it did not necessarily follow that this transformation was responsible for the trouble under investigation, so the first portion of this paper deals with the attempts made to determine whether other critical changes might not occur in these alloys. A glance at the list of papers1 that have been published since 1920 on the general subject of flotation suggests the variety of ideas that exist regarding the underlying cause of the phenomenon. Among these ideas, we find several coherent theories, but none that adequately and completely explain the phenomenon. Ralston2 and Bains3 suggested an electrical theory which has to do with the attachment of mineral particles to a bubble by the attraction of unlike electrical charges. This theory has its root in the fact that a bubble of air in pure water is electrified in such a way that the surfacc is negatively charged while the body of the water is positively charged. This result, which was first discussed by Helmholtz, also obtains when the water contains anything except a high concentration of hydrogen ions, or ions which are trivalent or tetravalent. The theory also holds that the mineral particles have positive charges on their surfaces, and so there is attachment between bubble surface and mineral particles by the old law of electrostatics, which states that unlike charges attract. Contact Angle and Oil Attraction The contact angle—the angle formed by a fluid-fluid boundary when both are in contact with a solid-—has been indicted several times for complicity in the phenomenon of flotation. This angle is supposed to indirectly measure the surface energy of a solid. Thus if we have two fluids in contact with a solid, we may express the difference between the two fluid-solid tensions as equal to the fluid-fluid tension times the cosine of the angle between the two fluids.4 If the two fluids are in contact with the solid, this is, no doubt, an excellent way of establishing relative surface energies. However, in flotation, we deal with substances which are not wetted by water. What assurance have we, then, that the angle
