THE rapid increase in the use of monel metal and malleable nickel in the form of sheet, rod and tube has resulted in a similar increase in the demand for these metals in the form of castings. These castings range in size from small valves and pipe fittings weighing a few ounces to large centrifugal pumps, gate valves and marine propellers, some of the latter weighing as much as 24,000 lb. Monel metal castings are widely used in accessories for steam power plants and in a variety of chemical plant. equipment where the corrosion resistance, high strength and toughness characteristic of this metal render it particularly valuable. Nickel castings find extensive use in the construction of corrosion resistant apparatus, and are often used in conjunction with wrought nickel sheet and tube in the fabrication of equipment for handling a variety of chemical and food products, particularly dairy products. In response to this demand for castings, numerous foundries have undertaken the production of castings of these metals and have met with varying degrees of success.

The Hammond Mining and Metallurgical Laboratory is the gift of Prof. John Hays Hammond to the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale University. Professor Hammond was graduated from this school in the class of 1876, and has always shown great Merest in its welfare and progress. In 1903, he offered to build and equip for it a mining and metallurgical laboratory. This offer was gratefully accepted by the trustees; and in October of the same year the architect, W. Gedney Beatty, and I were employed to draw up plans for the building, which is the largest of its kind in this country. The Treasurer's report shows the total gift of Professor Hammond, including land, building, and equipment, to have been $128,741.53. This does not include $5,000 given by Professor Hammond to defray incidental expenses. That the single charging-bell, properly proportioned, is a good all-around device for distributing material in a blast-furnace can scarcely be questioned; yet it is equally true that, in some cases, it has not given perfect satisfaction; as has been demonstrated by the substitution of double bells, at furnaces under the beat management—generally in cases where anthracite, either alone, or with a portion of coke, was used as fuel. The defect of the single bell seems to be that it does not permit, beyond very narrow limits, such changes in charging as may be required by the temporary conditioil of the furnace. Modern furnaces using Connellsville or other good coke and Lake Superior ores seem to be well served with a single bell. At least, up to a certain size, somewhere about 18 by 85 ft. to 19 by 90 feet, these furnaces make low-silicon pig-iron with about 1,800 lb. of fuel, or in some cases very much less. The following instances occur to me, in which other forms of charging-apparatus have been employed with advantage: 1. IT Is well known that manganese will desulfurize molten iron through the formation of manganese sulfide, which, being only slightly soluble in the metal, rises to and enters the slag where it remains as such (mixer slag) or is converted partly or wholly to calcium sulfide (basic open¬hearth slag). The reaction by which manganese sulfide is formed is Mn + FeS = MnS + Fe. This reaction is generally considered to be reversible, although McCance1 states- that such is not the case. The experimental work was carried out to confirm the results of Rohl2 as to the reversibility of the reaction. Six trials are herein considered. In each 200 grams of electrolytic iron free from manganese and sulfur were melted in a pure zirconia crucible in a carbon resistance electric furnace. To the melted iron in runs 2, 3 and 4 metallic manganese and manganese sulfide were added to give 1, 2 and 4 per cent. manganese respectively, with 0.50 per cent. of sulfur in each. In runs 5, 6 and 7, metallic manganese andiron sulfide to give the same proportions of manganese and sulphur as in runs 2, 3 and 4, were added. The melts were held molten in the furnace for an hour and then cast into small ingots.

INTRODUCTION Underground coal mining disturbs the original in-situ conditions which induces a series of strata activities and results in creating "mine pressures," the source of all ground control problems. Adoption of self advancing powered supports in modern longwall mining adds a new dimension to ground control problems and thus research. Roof stability, in general, refers to the integrity and stability of the immediate roof which is measured by the maximum exposed area and time duration without support. There are many factors that con- tribute to roof stability problems. In addition to mining height, rock property and stratum components and caving angle of the immediate roof, characteristics of joints and fissures and their degrees of development, faults and underground water, the operational techniques also play a very important role. This paper summarizes these operational techniques and methods of controlling stable and unstable roof. CLASSIFICATION OF THE IMMEDIATE ROOF There are many ways of classifying the roof (1). For practical purpose, the immediate roof in this paper is divided into three groups, i.e. unstable. medium stable and stable. INTRODUCTION Block-caving mines are generally large operations. Calculating the quantity and value of mineral present and determining the economic limits to mining are complicated processes requiring much time and effort. If these processes are to be worthwhile, they must be accurate and reliable. Success in planning may increase the economic returns significantly. Since capital investments in block-caving mines are generally quite large, and development may span several years, quicker and more accurate methods of mine layout are very worthwhile to the mining industry. The purpose of this study is to develop an approach to the evaluation and layout of block-caving mines. The study included development of a simple approach to modelling ore reserves and a rapid, dynamic programming solution for optimum ultimate mining limits. TRADITIONAL APPROACHES TO BLOCK-CAVING MINE LAYOUT General discussion of techniques of calculating and valuing ore reserves can be found in the literature, (1-4). Mining limit approaches have been investigated by many and follow five general methods: 1, Moving cone method (5) 2. Graphroriented technique (6,7) 3. Dynamic programming technique (7,8,9) 4. Network flow method (10,11) 5. Pillar method (12) Of these investigations, only two were developed for underground mining applications, those of Sharp (9) and Riddle (11).

Approaching exhaustion of areas where traditional prospecting methods can pay off and sharply rising costs require increasing sophistication in planning exploration. Most outcrops, not only of ore and gossan but also of obvious zones of alteration, have been examined; many of the anomalies readily detectable by geophysical means have been drilled; geochemical surveys now cover extensive tracts. How should the explorationist proceed to find the ores that will keep his company in business and supply the world with the energy and raw materials it needs? Two courses are open to him: (1) saturation coverage by geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and drilling in the expectation that something will turn up or (2) critical analysis of the factors responsible for the concentration of valuable minerals in the earth's crust. The successful explorationist applies both methods to the limit of his resources. The second course, analysis of geologic factors, also comprises two principal lines of research: (1) ever more detailed study of the chemistry (including isotopic analysis) of the ore and gangue minerals of known deposits in an effort to understand how they were formed and (2) increasingly detailed mapping of their environment to determine the reasons for their localization. Again, both are very necessary.

IN shaft sinking for coal mines, the cost item greatly influences the method adopted. This holds true especially when soft material must be traversed. The average life of a coal mine is short. This is clue either to the limited area of the coal basin or to the great expense of maintenance and haulage underground when the entries are extended a considerable distance from the hoisting shaft. Therefore, the engineer in opening a coal mine is confronted with the fact that the cost must be kept within certain bounds else the venture will prove unprofitable. For this reason he may be prohibited from adopting certain safe, but expensive, methods that are used in sinking caissons for foundations, driving transportation tunnels, or other work of permanent construction. A common method of sinking through difficult ground employs the aid of a steel shoe pushed ahead of the shaft timbers. Another is the drop-shaft method. These two methods were used in sinking the main shaft and the air shaft of the Eagle No. 3 mine, at Des Moines, Ia., and the following data show the relative success and cost of the two methods of sinking under the same conditions. PRODUCTION of magnesium metal in the United States during the past decade has increased from less than 600,000 lb. in 1928 to more than 4,800,000 lb. in 1938.1 The growing industry has stimulated interest in methods of production and in sources of raw material. All of the present domestic production is from brines. However, the availability of large tonnages of magnesite in the state of Washington, together with the possibility of cheap power, have created interest in the utilization of magnesite for the production of magnesium metal as well as for other purposes. Magnesite, the carbonate of magnesium (MgC03), usually is associated with lime-stone (CaCO3) and dolomite (MgC03 CaCO3). It occurs in crystalline and microcrystalline (sometimes termed amor-phous) forms.2 The more common crystal-line mineral is found in various shades of white, gray, yellow and brown, the colors being due to impurities, chiefly iron. Magnesite has a hardness of 3.5 to 4.5 and a specific gravity of 3.0 to 3.1. It forms rhombohedral crystals in the hexagonal system, having a vitreous, pearly luster. The quarries and mines of the Northwest Magnesite Co. near Chewelah, Wash., are large producers of magnesite for refractories.

INTRODUCTION Coal ash, presently the fifth most abundant of the solid minerals produced in the United States, is expected to become the fourth most abundant by the end of this decade (1). The production of fly ash from the combustion of pulverized coal amounted to a total of 44 million metric tons (Mt) in 1977 and is expected to Increase to 91 Mt by 1985. Coal ash, which results from the Inorganic clay and mineral content of the coal, contains several elements and thus can be considered as a mined and crushed mineral resource rather than a waste material Furthermore, potential problems associated with fly-ash disposal ponds and the leaching of potentially hazardous elements through groundwater infiltration and/or rainfall provide additional incentive for processing fly ash for environ- mental control as well as for the recovery of certain metal values. Fly ash could provide an abundant domestic source of aluminum and several other metals Aluminum is now recovered from bauxite, and over 90% of this ore is imported since domestic sources are limited and cannot meet the U.S. demand There is a close relationship between the aluminum content of fly ash and the domestic consumption of this metal (Table 1).

THE Russellton preparation plant of Republic Steel Corp., located north of Pittsburgh, Pa., prepares 3 1/2x0-in. Thick-Freeport coal by means of a 13-ft 6-in. diam Chance cone and 16 No. 7 Deister tables. The plant feed ranges between 370 and 410 tons per hr, of which approximately 31 pct is ¼x0-in. size, and the plant reject ranges between 14 and 16 pct of the feed. The 3½xY4-in. washed coal, the cone product, is dewatered and desanded by a double-deck Parrish-type shaking screen 46 ft long and 7 ft wide. The 1¼x¼-in. portion is further dewatered by two 4x12-ft single-deck vibrating screens. The ¼x0-in. washed coal from the tables is distributed to three 54x70 in. Bird centrifuges. The dewatered centrifuge product is combined with the product of the de-watering screens prior to loading into railroad cars. During the early part of 1951 complaints were received from officials at Republic's coke ovens concerning the moisture content of Russellton washed coal. The records revealed that during the first half of 1951 the shipped washed coal moisture averaged

The abundance and value of the tellurium minerals of Colorado is well known, but, as yet, few analyses have been made of them, and I offer these as a small contribution to the chemistry of these valuable ores. 1. Native Tellurium.—The specimens from which the analyses of this mineral were made are from the " John Jay" Mine, Boulder County, Colorado, where it occurs in quite large masses, though mixed with more or less silica and iron pyrites. It is usually a finegrained, tin-white mineral, but sometimes occurs in distorted, hexagonal prisms in cavities in the quartz. Before the blowpipe it gives the reactions for tellurium, sulphur and iron; by cupellation, it yields a small amount of gold. An analysis of a coarsely crystallized specilnen gave the following results : Specific gravity, 5.10.5. The basalt in much of the ore mined is weathered with alteration of olivine to serpentine and iron oxides, and augite to chorite. The most important host minerals for gold are the tellurides sylvanite and hessite. Next in importance the sulphide s, pyrite, marcasite and arseno-pyrite. A small amount of free gold also occurs. Chalcopyrite, sphalerite, tetrahedrite, bornite, galena and native tellurium are present in small quantities.
