It is not possible to include in this paper, limited as it is in scope, the many diverse steps toward the reduction of mine accidents that are taken in the mines that produce the nation's coal. Every coal-producing state has enacted laws covering proper mining practices, and the major portion of these are directly related to the safety of the mine employees. The United States Bureau of Mines, the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, The American Mining Congress, a number of national, regional and state organizations, as well as the coal technical press, have covered time and time again all of the '(do" and "don't" phases of mine operation that bear on the important question of mine and employee safety. Within the past 15 years The Union Pacific Coal Co, has attempted to put into practice in its mines in southern Wyoming these many good recommendations, finding some value in all, and yet, to secure substantial results, the management found it necessary to resort in the end to what might be referred to as i'extra-territorial" methods. It is the writer's purpose to show in this paper that marked and even extraordinary betterment, can be brought about when employer and employee work together with due sincerity. In presenting our own experience, one that has been duplicated in so far as results are concerned on numerous other properties, no theory of perfection of management exists; on the other hand, our organization feels that as long as our record of accidents remains as shown by even our latest and best performance we still have far to go. Safety work in some form has been carried on in and about the mining properties of The Union Pacific Coal Co. since the first mine was opened at the now long-abandoned town of Carbon, Wyo., in 1868. On June 30, 1903, an explosion and subsequent mine fire occurred in mine No. 1 at Hanna, taking 169 lives, and a second explosion occurred in the same mine on March 28, 1908, in which 59 additional lives were lost. Looking back with impartiality on the causes leading up to these two unfortunate disasters, we can only conclude that shooting from the solid, the absence of adequate ventilation, rock dusting, the use of water at the face to allay

IN the last book I have explained the methods of delimiting- the meers along each kind of vein, and the duties of mine officials. In this book1 I will in like manner explain the principles of underground mining and the art of surveying. First then, I will proceed to deal with those matters which pertain to the former heading, since both the subject and methodical arrangement require it. And so I will describe first of all the digging of shafts, tunnels, and drifts on venae profundae; next I will discuss the good indications shown by canales2, by the materials which are dug out, and by the rocks ; then I will speak of the tools by which veins and rocks are broken down and excavated ; the method by which fire shatters the hard veins ; and further, of the machines with which water is drawn from the shafts and air is forced into deep shafts and long tunnels, for digging is impeded by the inrush of the former or the failure of the latter ; next I will deal with the two kinds of shafts, and with the making of them and of tunnels ; and finally, I will describe the method of mining venae dilatatae, venae cumulatae, and stringers.

THE fact that gray iron increases in volume, cracks and distorts upon repeated heating and cooling is rather common knowledge. In ingot molds, Diesel engine pistons, carburizing boxes, continuous furnace parts, grate bars, stoker parts, and all castings that are subjected repeatedly to high and low temperatures, the phenomenon of growth presents a vital problem. Ingot molds distort and produce cracks which result in seams or laps and later appear as defects in the finished product. The heads of Diesel pistons frequently fail by cracking in a stellar shape. This is attributed usually to the result of permanent growth. Distortion and change of dimension of furnace parts frequently renders them entirely unusuable. In chain grate stokers, mechanical difficulties frequently are caused by the growth of the links. In proper operation these links should never attain a temperature sufficiently high to start growth; nevertheless, some have grown 1/8 in. on an 8-in. length when improperly operated. Even though the phenomenon is generally known there still exists a deficiency in the explanation of the mechanism of this growth. The field of investigators of this subject has a decided variation in opinion concerning the causes. The problem is of sufficient importance therefore to warrant further consideration.

The authors investigated the comminution of quartz and limestone mixtures in a ball mill, showing that the distribution modulus of a comminuted material is the same whether it is ground separately or as part of a mixture. Analysis of the ground products indicates that quartz and limestone consume energy during ball milling in proportion to their mass fraction in the mixtures. Recently Schuhmann' made a significant contribution to comminution theory by proposing that complex comminution operations comprise the summation of many individual comminution events. By means of the single comminution event hypothesis, Schuhmann derived the Charles energy-size reduction relationship by considering that fragments of every particle crushed during a single impact have a size distribution characterized by the Schuhmann size distribution. In this paper, the size reduction of mixtures of solids in ball mills is analyzed by considering that size reduction occurs as many single comminution events. If a mixture of two materials is being ground in a ball mill, each successful impact of a ball with a particle of one material should yield an assembly of particles whose size distribution is characteristic of that material. INTRODUCTION The Broken Hill orebody was discovered in 1883. The richness of the deposit encouraged rapid development of the field and within fifteen years ten mining companies were operating. By 1940, several companies located in the centre of the field with limited reserves, had ceased operation. These leases have been acquired by Broken Hill South Limited and North Broken Hill Limited. The four companies currently operating in the field are, in order of increasing production rate:¬- Broken Hill South Limited (BH South) North Broken Hill Limited (North BH) The Zinc Corporation, Limited (ZC) and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) The tonnages treated by each company since the present plants have been in operation are shown in Figure 1. The leases are located as shown in Figure 2, and an aerial view of Broken Hill showing the spread of the City on each side of the line of lode is shown in Figure 3. The present treatment plants date back to the early 1930's when the BH South plant was built. The North BH and ZC plants were built in 1939 and NBHC's in 1952. The three plants built before 1940 have similar crushing and grinding flowsheets. NBHC differs in that it includes rod mills with consequent differences in fine crushing equipment.

The processes involved in turning a set of seismograph records into a geological structure map may be divided into three classes; (1) picking reflections on the records, to be used for the computations; (2) determining the basis on which the computations should be made in order to arrive at correct results; (3) making the necessary computations and plotting sections and maps. The first is usually done by the crew chief, or at least checked by him. The computing system usually originates in the head office, occasional consultations with the party chief providing modifications as necessary to meet special conditions. The computations and plotting are done by the party computer, with possibly one or two assistants if the calculations require much time. Picking the Rejleclions Marking of the reflections on the records is perhaps the most important step and the one most likely to determine the reliability of the final results. Making the "picks" is important because most of the problems that come up in practical work are connected with the problem of what can be done with poor records. The lack of any definite criteria by which to judge what are good and usable reflections is at the bottom of the difficulty. Give the same set of records to several people to mark and they will probably come out with a variation in the number of reflections per record that are deemed usable. With good records the correct picks are obvious to all, but with poor records experience seems to be the only reliable guide as to what picks are reliable and what are merely born of imagination and desperation. Experience in marking records and seeing how the structures eventually check out is more important than training in physics or geology. Different types of equipment and shooting methods may produce records quite different in appearance, from the same territory, and the computer can do his best work with records of a type on which he has had considerable experience, and has learned the limitations and shortcomings as well as the virtues of the data with which he is working. Reflections may be picked for dips only, in which case the particular reflection picked is not recognizable with certainty on records from any other spread. A separate room in the suite occupied by the American Institute of Mining Engineers on the ninth floor of the United Engineering Society Building, has been equipped with furniture and telephone extension for the temporary use of members of the Institute or of sister societies, or visitors suitably accredited. .In addition to this general accommodation, another room has been similarly furnished as a business headquarters for a single person, and for a limited period. For the conditions of this privilege, inquiry should be made at the office of the Institute. . In order that the benefit of this arrangement shall not be restricted to a few members only, the period of continued occupancy will be limited, and applications will be considered in the order of their receipt. A small. fee will be required for the use of the facilities furnished. ANNOUNCEMENT. Aluminum alloys containing relatively small amounts of magnesium and silicon are of commercial interest because they are readily workable in the annealed form and may be hardened and strengthened by suitable heat treatment. An intermediate temper can be produced in these alloys by quenching after a Solution heat treatment and the alloy in this condition can be formed easily. Artificial aging is required to obtain the maximum mechanical properties but this aging does not cause distortion nor require elaborate heat-treating equipment. The hardening of the alloys after quenching is attributable in part to the retention of the compound Mg²Si in solid solution, while the maximum hardness obtained by subsequent artificial aging is attributed to the fact that the solid solubility of the compound Mg²Si in aluminum decreases with decreasing temperature. Considering the importance of aluminum alloys susceptible to heat treatment, it is surprising how few fundamental investigations have been carried out on the aluminum-magnesium silicide alloys. This paper deals principally with the solid solubility relations of the compound Mg2Si in aluminum and is the sixth paper of a series1 from the laboratories of the Aluminum Co. of America reporting the results of investigations of equilibrium relations in aluminum-base alloys made from high-purity aluminum."

There is a fruitful area of computer competence which has gone virtually unnoticed by the mining industry. This is in the solution of its numerous fluid-flow distribution problems, involving the circulation of air, water and other fluids in conduits through mines. Typical of these is the mine ventilation system, which circulates air through mine openings to the working faces. The networks of interconnected airways in large mines-often resembling a tortuous maze or labyrinth defying representation by schematic, let alone solution-must somehow be resolved and analyzed, if effective and safe control of the ventilation is to be maintained. These are admirably suited to programming for solution by high-speed electronic computer. Not only can direction of flow be determined but quantity and head loss as well. EARLIER EFFORTS AT NETWORK SOLUTION The only prior attempt to solve mine ventilation networks by digital computer methods was made by a Japanese investigator1 in 1958 whose work went unpublished. Unfortunately, he employed a method of network analysis little used in the United States and one which could accommodate a maximum of only 30 airways. While his analysis seems unnecessarily cumbersome and involved, it did suggest that a digital computer approach was feasible.

In hard, discontinuous rocks, failure modes and stability are controlled to a great extent by the intersection of discontinuities with the excavated surface. We have solved the general problem of finding the shape and size of all blocks formed through the inter- section of any number of joints and excavation surfaces and will demonstrate a simple graphical method for determining which of these is the "keyblock." An example will explain this methodology applied to a simple open pit. The effects of slope curvature in plan or section, will be demonstrated. Finally, we will show how to determine the optimum orientations for the cut slopes. The methodology is based upon a powerful topologic theorem concerning the finiteness of spatial intersections. This paper is a companion to another dealing with underground openings in the Proceedings of the 22nd Symposium on Rock Mechanics (MIT) , July 1981. This paper discusses the rock blocks created by the intersection of discontinuities and excavation surfaces in a rock mass. It establishes principles and procedures by means of which those blocks that are finite and critically located can be identified and described. The main assumptions are the following: 1. The rock itself is assumed to be strong so that the only concern for stability is the movement of rock blocks them- selves.

To know the rate of declinc of oil wells is very important, yet ordinarily we are prevented from getting this rate because the oil from several wells is put into one or a few tanks as soon as the wells have been connected to the power. The object of doing this is economy of tanks, pipes, labor, and accounting. But we are making a great sacrifice for this small economy. The advantages of the individual records are that we would know better: 1. When the well has ceased to be profitable. 2. When a well has gotten into bad condition. 3. The real record of the yield per acre and the rate of decline of the wells. The lease total is too mixed as to age of the wells for existing records to have much significance. To obtain such individual well records and more accurate logs are the great desiderata of satisfactory management of oil properties. 4. Which wells show the slowest decline—information which is valuable in locating new wells or purchasing adjoining leases. The truth of this statement is evident, when we reflect upon the large number of purchases of producing property. The availability of digital computers costing less than $15, 000 makes them economically attractive as versatile research and experiment tools. Several such installations at Oak Ridge National Laboratory have shown that improvements in research productivity and experimental control accuracy can result from the proper application of a small digital computer. However, careful attention must be paid to several potentially expensive problems in 1) interfacing the experiment to the computer and 2) programming the computer. Two specific applications of very small computers to metallurgical testing and research are described. One is a system for data acquisition and precise temperature control associated with a thermocouple testing program, and the other is a system for pulse calorimetry determination of the specific heat of metals over wide temperature ranges and in the neighborhood of metallurgical transformations. The data acquisition system which uses a PDP-8/S computer monitors signals from up to 264 low-level thermocouple signals at two scanning speeds: 10 readings per second for long-term drift data, and 500 readings per second for transient data. The pulse calorimetry system which uses a PDP-8 computer accepts up to 6 signals of 0- to 10-v range and because of a larger analysis program, uses a bulk memory (magnetic disc) in addition to core memory.

SUMMARY In the German hard coal industry, relevant parameters influencing strata control have been identified in many years of intensive research work. The research results allow the formulation of the technical requirements on the design of shield supports as a function of the geological and operational conditions the face machinery is subject to. Keys to strata control are support resistance adjusted to the individual conditions of application and the tip-to-face interval. The technology to implement these requirements in actual operation is available. The automation of the shield-advance work cycle, currently setting in, can further contribute to improve strata control. In doing so, however, we must not forget the demand for an unsophisticated and low-cost design of shield supports with high operational safety. INTRODUCTION The German hard coal mining Industry produces coal from flat and inclined seams in depths between 400 and 1,300 m. The coal is exclusively won by longwall working involving face lengths up to 280 m. The thickness of the seams being worked is between 0.7 m and 4.5 m. Coal winning is fully mechanized with drum shearers or coal ploughs; two, three, or four leg shields are predominantly used as supports.

department, first as a practical miner, next. as rodman on the survey corps, of which he soon became chief, then draftsman and mining engineer in the company's office. In January, 1916, he was promoted to the position of district engineer in charge of mining engineering work. He became a member of this Institute in September, 1917. Captain Ba.llamy's military experience began at the same time as his engineering practice. He was a charter member of Company A, Engineers, N. G. P., which was organized ten years ago. He saw service on the Mexican border as First Lieutenant of this Company, and remained in that position until November, 1916. In July, 1917, he was again called into service and was sent to Camp Hancock, Ga., with the 103d Regiment of Engineers. Before joining this regiment he attended a school for officers at Fort Sill, Okla., where he received special training in field fortifications. In December, 1917, he was commissioned Topographical Captain on the Regimental Staff, and in April, 1918, preceded his regiment by about six weeks to France, where he again attended an officers' training school. He rejoined his regiment on July 15, near Chateau Thierry and was killed near Fismes on Aug. 9, 1918. Lieutenant Martin F. Bowles Martin F. BOWleS, born Apr. 25, 1893, at Bonne Terre, Mo., and graduated from the Neodesha, Kans., High School, had finished all but one month of a four-year course in metallurgical engineering at the Missouri School of Mines, Rolla, Mo., when on May 12, 1917, he entered the first Officers' Training Camp at Fort Riley, Kans. At the close of the training period, he was commissioned a Sccond Lieutenant and assigned to Co. B, 355th Infantry, 89th Division, and stationed at Camp Funston. He left this camp with his company on May 21, 1918, and sailed from an eastern port on June 4, ayriving in England on June 15, 1918. After a short stay at a rest camp there, he proceeded to France. On August 14, he wrote that he was with Battalion Headquarters as Gout Officer, 1st Battalion, 355th Infantry, 89th Division. The last letter received from him, dated September 2, was written in his dugout and contained the following: "Here it is 2.45 a. M. Sitting in a dugout waiting for some patrols to report back in, I am writing this by the light of two candles." He was killed in action on the night of Sept. 3, 1918. The letter of notifi-

In the fall of 1937, the Department of Mining at Penn State was being reorganized and the department records were moved to the Records Room of the School. An inventory of the contents of the vault disclosed six folders of records that had been forgotten for 27 years. These files, apparently preserved by former Dean W. R. Crane, plus the recollections of several former members of the Association described below, unfolded the "lost chapter" in mineral industries education.1 It was apparent at an early date in technical education that an association of mining schools with common interests and problems would have definite value. By 1902 sufficient interest had developed in this idea to cause the holding of a preliminary meeting for the purpose of organization. The first meeting was held at the Montana School of Mines on September 4, 1902. At that time, officers were elected and resolutions were adopted that there be formed an organization to be known as the National Association of State Mining Schools. The object and purpose of this Association was to advance the interests of state mining schools in every way, particularly by promoting legislation for the benefit of such schools. These statements have been translated by Sir Robert from various German sources, and are presented here as an indication of what Germany is doing not only to further her military power, but also to prepare for the period of trade rehabilitation to which she is looking forward after the close of, the war. KAISER WILHELM TRUST FOR PROMOTION OF WAR SCIENCE The Kaiser has approved the foundation of a Trust with the name given above. The aim of the Trust is to further the development of scientific and technical aids to warfare, by uniting the scientific and the military forces of the country for work together. The scientific Work is to be carried on by the following technical committees (or commissions) (1) Committee for the chemical raw materials, for the production of munitions-manufacturing materials. (2) Committee for chemical war materials (powder, explosives, gas, and the like). (3) Committee for physics, including ballistics, telephony, telegraphy, determination of targets and distances, measurements, and the like. (4) Committee for engineering and communication. (5) Committee for aeronautics. (6) Committee for obtaining and preparation of metals.
