OPERATORS of diamond drills have long been familiar with thread-like markings or riflings on cores but apparently have given but little serious thought to the conditions that are responsible for their production. The opinion generally held by those who have observed the phenomena is that the riflings are produced directly or indirectly by vibration, but so far as the writer is aware no systematic attempt has been made to demonstrate the fact. A careful search through the literature on diamond-drilling practice has been rewarded by only one reference to such markings of cores. J. N. Justice1 writes, "Of the peculiarities met with in the core, I will mention only one. The core from the "H" drill, at about 360 ft. came out rifled and pentagonal. The change from the circular to the pentagonal was sudden, and for 9 ft. this structure was maintained, when suddenly it returned to the circular. I have not been able to find any one who can explain the cause of this change of form. The drill men marveled at it and suggested vibration, six-stone bits, and several other hypotheses Which need not be mentioned." The writer became interested in the matter of core riflings some 10 years ago while in the Flat River lead region of Missouri, where many remarkable examples of "rifled" cores were observed and collected. Since that time similar phenomena have been observed in various localities throughout the United States and Canada, and samples have been gotten together illustrating a large number of variations in form. After a careful study had been made of the material at hand it seemed desirable that certain data should be obtained from the experience of others regarding the normal action of diamond drills in forming cores, portions of which are occasionally rifled, before an attempt was made to draw any conclusions as to their cause.

Underground construction involves all the legal problems common to the construction industry and adds a nice little group of its own. Elements which will ultimately affect contractor-owner relationship commence to form almost as soon as the owner conceives of the project. A few of these with emphasis on their application to underground construction will be mentioned. (1) During the design stage, determination must be made as to whether the specifications will be general or restrictive. To what extent will the operations of the contractor be controlled? Can he proceed to use any method of tunnel excavation that he desires and only be responsible for the end result or will specific excavation procedures be required? Can explosives be used? Under what restrictions? Are tunnel supports required? How long can the crown behind the heading remain unsupported? What kind of supports are required? What restrictions on the placement of tunnel-lining concrete will be required? Each of you could extend this list for many pages but these illustrations are indicative of decisions that must be made in advance of bidding, and the ultimate decision on each question can have a significant effect on the legal relationships that exist between the contractor and the owner. The owner wants a good job at a fair price. On the other hand, nothing is worse than having a tunnel collapse during the construction period, with its extra costs, loss of life, and delay to the entire project. If the specifications are too restrictive, increased costs of performance are bound to occur. Owners save tremendous amounts of money by obtaining a contractor who has been ingenious in devising the most economical construction procedure. Care must be taken in drafting the specifications so that the benefits of such ingenuity will not be lost. (2) HOW is the contract to be awarded? Will there be open bidding, a restricted list of bidders, or will there be negotiations with a comparatively few contractors? If it is a government project, whether Federal, state, or

Among the new devices for cheapening the cost of material entering into the manufacture of iron is the mechanical drawing of coke, by which the coke from bee-hive ovens is extracted with a minimum of manual labor. About twenty years ago, an ordinary plate-conveyer was put in use at the plant of bee-hive coke-ovens owned by the firm of Bell Bros. & Co., near Middlesboro, England. This conveyer ran close along the front of the ovens, and carried the coke to the cars. The ovens were drawn by hand, and a very great saving in cost was secured, as one man could draw and clean out twice as many ovens after the conveyer was put in use—he having no forking to do, and the coke being carried away as fast as it was drawn to the mouth of the oven. The next step was further to eliminate hand-labor as far as possible; and Mr. Thomas Smith of the Thorncliffe Iron Works, near Sheffield, patented in 1891 the machine for drawing coke which I here describe. This machine, the outcome of several years of experimenting, has now been in successful use since 1891, and there are between twenty and thirty of them in operation at present, and others building. The machine, as may be seen from Figs. 1 and 2, consists of a wedge-shaped shovel of proper width and thickness, connected with a steel rack of sufficient length to reach the back of the oven. The rack is supported by rolls, and guided by a device operated by a hand-wheel, which directs the shovel in the oven. The rack is driven by a pinion on a vertical shaft carrying a bevel-gear on the upper end. This bevel-gear is driven by another on the engine-shaft. In a recent paper1 a detailed discussion is given of the possibilities of using polarized light in the examination of opaque substances. The factors underlying the problem are there treated from the viewpoint of the electromagnetic theory of light and the presentation is necessarily mathematical in form. The practical methods resulting from the discussion are, however, relatively simple and promise to be of value in the determination of certain ores and metals when studied in reflected light under the microscope. The results of the theoretical investigation referred to may be summarized by stating that in general the optical constants, such as refractive indices and absorption indices, cannot be satisfactorily ascertained on small, random, polished sections; that the use of polarized light enables the observer ordinarily to determine whether the crystal plate is iso-tropic or anisotropic, and also to ascertain the degree of anisotropism; that for this purpose methods based either on the contrast in intensity between the two reflected components of non-polarized light, or on the amount of rotation of the plane of polarization, on reflection, of vertically incident, plane-polarized light, may be employed; that methods based on the phase difference between the two reflected components are in general of little value because of the small differences in phase which ordinarily result for a relatively large change in birefringence or biabsorption. The measurement of the optical properties of transparent minerals, even in minute irregular grains, is a simple task with modern petrographic microscope methods and is accomplished by petrologists as part of their ordinary routine work. But the determination of the optical constants of opaque substances is difficult and is rarely attempted; all observations are necessarily made in reflected light and are restricted commonly to the determination of color, of hardness, of the character of crystallization, and of the behavior of the mineral or metal plate toward reagents and abrasives. IN order to get an idea as to the strength of steel rails, it will be well to review the tests to which iron rails have been subjected. In England, Mr. Ashcroft found that the best 80 pound rails broke under a 300 pound weight, falling 15 feet. In Germany the Society of Railway tyfanage1-s determined 011 and have long applied a test of 1000 pounds falling 101/2 feet, as the standard which all first-class iron rails must reach. In this country no inspection nor test is applied, but tests made show that iron rails fro; our most reliable makers, break under a G foot fall of a 1500 pound drop as an extreme test, most of those tested breaking under a far less test; some breaking with less than a 3 foot fall of the same weight. Everywhere where steel has been used, engineers have come to the conclusion that some test is required to show the regularity and strength of the product. As compared with iron, the tests which steel will stand are wonderful. After numerous experiments partially based on the experience of the rail-mill at Graz, belonging to the Southern Railway of Austria, the Society of German Railway Managers fixed upon a test of 2000 pounds falling 138 feet. They found that this test represented the steel which suited their necessities, and also found that with steel of otherwise average purity, this test represented about one-half per cent. of carbon, and made it a rule to take no steel containing under three-tenths of a per cent. of carbon, because it was too soft. They expressed a hope that a harder steel could soon be made tough enough to stand the same test. I n England, a test was adopted of 2240 pounds, falling 15 to 17 feet on the rail on heavy bearings. MEASUREMENTS of resistivity by methods involving the use of two current electrodes and two potential electrodes in general collinear with the current electrodes have been made extensively in geophysical investigations. In the method developed by Wenner and made use of by Gish and Rooney, and later in a modified form by Lee, the distance between the current electrodes is divided into three equal parts by the potential electrodes. In one of the methods developed by Schlumberger prospecting methods and by Koenigsberger, one current electrode is placed at considerable distance from the other and potential measurements are made in the immediate neighborhood of one of the current electrodes. The method is described as the single current electrode method, and the effect of the distant current electrode is considered negligible or a correction is made for the effect in the calculation of the resistivity. Usually the correction that is introduced is based on the calculated effect for measurements made in a homogeneous conducting material. The useful application of these methods in prospecting for minerals, of course, is in regions where nonhomogeneous conditions exist. In many of these conditions it is very doubtful whether the effect of the distant current electrode may be neglected, except for measurements in the immediate neighborhood of the "single" current electrode, and corrections based on homogeneity of the medium will necessarily be inadequate. In order to obtain a degree of symmetry that would preclude the necessity for corrections for the distant electrode and that would simplify interpretation, it appeared desirable to use a central current electrode and a set of distant end current electrodes symmetrically placed about the central electrode as shown in Fig. 1 and to provide by means of auxiliary resistances that the currents passing into the earth at the distant end electrodes should be equal. UNDER the caption "fault," geologists intend to include all mass movements of solid rocks over adjacent rock masses. When these are studied long after their origin, however, circumstances make it possible to recognize as "fault" only formations showing clear evidence of actual movement of one side with respect to the other. Necessarily the chief evidence consists of the offset of a vein, bed, or other key structure. Planes of movement parallel to the bedding, or nearly so, are recognized with difficulty or are overlooked and hence many important faults are wholly unrecorded. Indeed, among standard American references on structural geology, one alone emphasizes the importance of bedding-plane movements and that one only briefly1. For some time the writer, cognizant of this difficulty, has paid special attention to such movements, both as observed in the field and as recorded in the literature. It is believed that enough data are now at hand to justify a short discussion. Its purposes are fivefold. It is desired first to briefly classify and describe at least the more common kinds of bedding-plane faults, and second, to examine the causes and manner of their formation, at least in instances where the subject has not yet been well covered by other investigators. Third, certain by-products of bedding- lane movements are of such conspicuous importance to the economic geologist and mining engineer as to merit mention. Fourth, concrete illustrations should be placed before the reader in order to lend reality and to furnish a basis of comparison with his experience; such illustrations will necessarily be scattered through the text of this paper. They are only in part from the writer's own field observations. The fifth and prime objective of this paper is to direct attention to the great importance of movements on the bedding planes, in the hope that the recognition of such movements and their significance may simplify mining problems.

PRoduction of crude oil in Tennessee during 1938 was slightly more than 41,000 bbl., an increase of about 5000 bbl. over 1937. The production by counties and by fields is shown in Table 1. The increased production has resulted from continued activity in the Upper Cumberland district, especially in Clay County. The "Mississippi lime" production in Scott and Morgan Counties continued to show a further decline with a 1938 production of 12,379 bbl. as against 14,644 bbl. during 1937. Small scattered production from some half dozen wells in Clay, Pickett, and Fentress Counties, on which there are no accurate figures, is estimated at 500 bbl. during the year. The only natural gas marketed off the lease in Tennessee during 1938 was in Morgan County, where a small amount was furnished for the town of Sunbright and immediate vicinity. The gas occurs with the oil in the Boone Camp field and small amounts were put on the line from the near-by Coon Hollow and Seabolt pools. Developments There were 88 wells spudded in during 1938, of which 10 were drilling or only temporarily shut down on Dec. 31, 1938. Eighty wells were completed during the year; 16 produced oil and 3 were gas wells of undetermined quantity. The total footage drilled on 1938 completions was 63,385 ft. Flush production during the year totaled 850 bbl. per day. The more important wildcats are listed in Table 2; the distribution of oil and gas tests drilled during the year, according to physiographic divisions, is given in Table 3. Cumberland Plateau There were no completions in the producing pools in Scott and Morgan Counties. The decline in production in these areas has been steady for the past several years. In an effort to revive production, present plans include a repressuring program in the Boone Camp field in Morgan County early in 1939. There was one completion in Morgan

Howe (author's reply to discussion*).-Dr. Unger states that magnesite will hardly supersede dolomite in fettling after a heat; that it is hard to believe a slag composed of oxide of iron containing about 6 per cent. of phosphorus is the active corroding, agent in a boil in a furnace; and that boiling cannot be said to be the result of the chemical action of a high-phosphorus slag on a basic bottom. These are well-established facts that no one would venture to question. The authors were misinterpreted in the statement that "in the summary, it is claimed that magnesite low in lime, or of greatest purity, ranks first in resistance to slaking," etc. On the contrary, the position has been taken throughout that while a low lime content is advantageous, the presence of several per cent. of iron oxide (an impurity), is necessary in order to confer the proper bonding and sintering properties in dead-burned grain magnesite to be used for furnace hearths. We cannot subscribe to the view that pure magnesia is no better fitted for a refractory than pure lime,' nor that the pure natural varieties of magnesite; such as Grecian or Washington, must necessarily be burned with silica and oxide of iron to produce a satisfactory material. On a small scale, pure magnesia has been satisfactorily used as a refractory in the form of crucibles. In the production of dead-burned grain magnesite from the Grecian or Washington mineral, iron oxide is added but the addition of silica is neither customary nor desirable. It is possible to manufacture brick of good quality from both the Grecian and the Washington material without adding either silica or iron oxide, providing they are burned at a sufficiently high temperature. This is regularly done on a commercial scale both in America and abroad when brick of. exceptionally high refractoriness or special purity are desired. The following analysis is of an English brick of Grecian magnesite which is extremely low in all impurities.1

ONE of the most important contributions to the art of electrolytic zinc production has been the aluminum cathode. This has been used in all major production since its commercial development in 1916. The literature is replete with important contributions, some of which may have been replaced by better ones, but thus far there appears no other metal to take the place of aluminum as cathode material. Credit for this innovation goes to Sherard Cowper Coles, of England. When experi¬menting on the extraction of zinc from Broken Hill ore at Hayle, Cornwall, in 1893, he introduced the aluminum cathode, and in 1895 obtained British Patent No. 20073. The reason for this dominant position of aluminum as cathode material in zinc sulphate electrolytes is its unique surface, to which electrodeposited metals usually do not tightly adhere. The metal must be of high purity for best results. It is possible to develop a starting-sheet method by which thin electrodeposited sheets of cathode zinc are made and stripped from a smooth aluminum plate. Such thin sheets of cathode zinc may be used as are the copper sheets in standard electrolytic copper-refinery practice. However, complications arise because of extreme warping of the zinc starting sheet after a few hours of deposition, and thus special arrangements must be made to compensate for this abnormality. Reasons advanced for the ease with which deposits may be stripped from the aluminum surface are: (1) presence of a permanent oxide coating on the metal, (2) failure of aluminum to alloy with the deposit, (3) differences in coefficient of expansion, (4) high position of aluminum in the electromotive series of metals. Of these reasons for nonadherence, which may have some application in general deposition, probably the oxide coating has the greatest bearing on the subject of zinc deposition. A centralized online data acquisition system has been developed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines Pittsburgh Mining and Safety Research Center for rapidly digitizing, storing, and processing experimental signals originating up to 1100 feet away from a central computer. This system, which services seven laboratories, is currently based on a CDC System 17 1/- computer with 56K of semiconductor memory, four disk drives (one shared online with a CDC 1700), two magnetic tape drives, high-speed A/D hardware, and other input/output peripherals. The laboratories are linked to the central computer by 15-pair cables and signal conditioners and to the computer's communications controller by modems and current loops. The A/D throughput rate is approximately 30,000 samples per second (9 bit plus sign resolution) and permits scanning about 30 instruments once every millisecond for up to 100 seconds, being limited only by disk capacity. The laboratories serviced by this facility conduct explosions research and include such facilities as an Experimental Coal Mine Explosion Facility (45 channels), a Constant Volume Combustion Laboratory (4 channels), and a Simulated Coal Mine Laboratory (15 channels). Personnel support includes one systems analyst, two applications analysts, one operator, and a hardware technician. The system has performed adequately for burst-type data acquisition, but due to a lack of long-term reliability (24 hours) of the real-time multiprogramming operating system and unpredictable power failures, slow phenomena signals are generally digitized and stored offline. This latter data is input to the computer through peripherals such as a high-speed paper tape reader, or high-speed asynchronous communications ports. Processing of data is done either in real-time (as soon as data is collected) or in batch mode. Smaller batch jobs are run on this computer, and all others are transmitted by means of the system's high-speed UT 200 terminal simulator to a CDC-6000 series computer.

ONE phase of the treatment in sulphide flotation, covered generally in a review of pulp pretreat-ment by S. A. Falconer,' is the matter of grinding mills as conditioners, a subject on which further study could be advantageous. Flotation with few exceptions is preceded by grinding, and the grinding and flotation capacity required for the treatment of an ore is based generally on laboratory or pilot mill tests. The results of such tests, it then is assumed, will be duplicated in practice, and a flowsheet is prepared on that basis. This assumption may be too broad, because in several instances laboratory flotation tests made on massive sulphide copper ores could not be duplicated in plant operation without the introduction of an aeration step, either in closed circuit with the grind-inging mills, or between grinding and flotation.~' " The differences between laboratory and plant grinding practice are considerable, and may be summarized as follows: 1—In the laboratory a relatively fine charge is ground in a batch mill. In the plant, the feed, usually considerably coarser than the ore tested in the laboratory, enters the grinding mill continuously and more often than not, oversize material in the mill discharge is retained in the grinding circuit by a classifier until the required degree of reduction has been effected. 2—The rate of grinding in the laboratory is slower than in plant practice. 3—The percentage of volume occupied by the pulp in a laboratory mill rarely approaches that of a continuous overflow type mill. This does not apply if the comparison is made with grate type mills, but in that case an even wider discrepancy between the relative rates of laboratory and mill grinding almost invariably exists. The present trend in grinding is toward larger mills to reduce the number of operating units. This accentuates the foregoing differences. It is believed that the trend toward larger mills is sound, but that when large mills are used, metallurgists should check their flotation circuits carefully to determine whether laboratory tests are being reproduced in

An analysis is presented to show that the formation of rolling textures in fcc metals can be rationalized in terms of flow mechanisms operative during the rolling process. First, a general approach used by Calnan is followed, where the rolling process is approximated on the basis of two axes, p and Q. In this treatement there are two separate sets of slip systems, one for each axis, and it is shown that a homogeneous rotation can he achieved by restricting the slip systems for the two axes to share common slip directions Then, two criteria are used to select the active slip systems for the axis P: they must have relatively high resoloed shear stresses, and dislocations on these slip systems must interact attractively in order to lower total energy content Finally, a method of analysis is introduced to locate the end position of an axis by knowing its acti7.e slip systems. The result of the analysis indi- cates that two main flow mechanisms operate in fcc metals. The ideal orientation derived from one oj-them is (8 13 21) (21 8 13) which is very close to the (358) (523) orientation observed experimentally on the rolling texture of copper. This flow mechanism should only he operative in metals containing dislocations extended into partials separated by less than five times their lattice parameter. The ideal orientations derived from the other flow mechanism are a combination of (1 10} (112) and a spread of orientations with (110) parallel to the rolling plane. This type of ideal orientations corresponds to those observed in the rolling texture of silver 30:70 brass, and binary alloys with high alloying content. This flow mechanism should be operative in any fcc metal regardless of its stacking-fauIt energy. One of the most useful, and at the same time least commonly used, methods of thermal analysis for the determination of transformations in metals and alloys consists in the recording of the time intervals required for successive increments of temperature change during heating or cooling, the temperature of the furnace containing the specimen being altered at a uniform rate. The curve obtained by plotting these time intervals as a function of the mean temperature of the specimen durnig the interval is called the inverse-rate curve. It is probably due to the fact that no simple and convenient method has apparently been available for the measurement of the successive time intervals that this method has not been so generally used as, for example, the differential method, for which several types of automatic or semi-automatic apparatus have been designed. Whenever this method has been used, the intervals have usually been measured with the use of a chronograph; its operation as practised at the Bureau of Standards1 is as follows: The temperature of the specimen is measured by a thermocouple and a dial potentiometer. The operator sets the potentiometer at successive values of the electromotive force differing by equal increments, usually 0.02 millivolt, and records the exact instant on the chronograph, by pressing a contact key, at which the galvanometer coil passes through its null position. Two-second intervals are also recorded on the chronograph record, and the number of seconds elapsing between successive signals is afterward counted from the record and plotted as a function of the electromotive force or of the temperature. This is an admirable method and by it most minute thermal arrests may be detected, but it requires a good chronograph, which is generally difficult to obtain, and the time of one operator during the recording and, subsequently, to read the intervals from the record; the latter operation often takes from one to two hours. There is here suggested a simple, convenient, and, it is believed, equally accurate method of recording the successive time intervals, by which the
