Chromium is one of the new metals, but considerable research has been required to determine an approximate record of its production from 1827 until the present. Its use in the form of pure metal is not extensive; of the chromite mined, about one-half is required for making ferrochro-mium, about two-fifths goes directly into refractories and the remainder is absorbed chiefly by the chemical trades. The industries that demand chromite for such uses are mainly in countries that produce little chromite, while the important chromite-producing countries are not generally consumers. The international flow of chromite is therefore of interest, as well as the political and commercial control of resources of the metal. World Production The first mining of chromite is said to have occurred as early as 1820, at the Roros deposit in Norway, but the first well-established output came from the Reed mine, in Maryland, about 1827. Thereafter the United States led the world in chromite production until 1860, when Turkey took the lead. Russia in turn became the chief producer from 1897 to 1902, inclusive. From 1903 to 1909, New Caledonia held first place, but alternated with Southern Rhodesia from 1910 to 1917, inclusive. In 1918, 1919 and 1920-1921, the United States, India and New Caledonia led, respectively. In 1922 Southern Rhodesia assumed first place and has since continued to be the world's foremost producer by a large margin. Fig. 1 illustrates the production of the leading countries from 1890 to 1929, inclusive. Fig. 2 shows the world production of chromite from 1890 to 1929, inclusive, in long tons and Table 2 gives the production by countries for the same period. The total world production for the 103 years, 1827 to 1929, ipclusive, is estimated at about 7,100,000 long tons, distributed as shown in Table 1. PHYSIOGRAPHICALLY, Mexico provinces, which are, in a manner, distinct economic areas. These may be denominated, (1) the Gulf coastal plain; (2) the Cordilleran plateau; (3) the Sonoran, and (4) the Tehuantepecan province. Fig. 1 shows the approximate boundaries of these provinces. The first is the continuation of the coastal plain of Texas and the Gulf region in general, which, except for prospective oil and lignite, has little of interest for the mining engineer.

INVAR is the preeminent low-expansion metal by virtue of the fact that it can be prepared with a zero coefficient of expansion at atmospheric temperature. This fact suggests that there is little room for improvement in the expansion properties of the low-expansion nickel steels. The inference is true, however, only so far as the expansion at and near atmospheric temperature is concerned, because the expansivity of invar starts to increase rapidly on heating above 100° C. and soon reaches the value of copper. Guillaume1 met this situation by increasing the nickel content above that of invar. By that expedient, alloys having low expansivity under higher temperatures were obtained, but not without a large increase in minimum expansivity. The increase in minimum expansivity with increasing nickel content severely limits the technical applications of these alloys at high temperatures. Prospects of improving the expansion characteristics of the nickel steels is offered by alloying. Search for an advantageous alloying addition by analogy with other alloy systems, however, is not productive because the low-expansion characteristic is unique with that system. The rule of mixtures usually gives a fair value of the expansivity of other solid-solution alloys, but in the iron-nickel systems gives a value of 18 X 10-6 per deg. C. whereas the actual value is 1 X 10-6 per deg. C. Apparently suitable additions are not to be deduced from such ingenuous considerations. Recognition of the fact that the temperature range of low expansivity in nickel steels is terminated with loss of magnetism affords a more promising basis for the selection of an advantageous element. One may expect from that fact that additions of nonmagnetic elements to the iron-nickel alloys are detrimental to the low-expansion characteristic. Indeed, carbon, manganese, silicon, copper and chromium are detri-mental to the expansion properties and no nonmagnetic element is reported to be beneficial. DENSE-MEDIA processes utilize the familiar laboratory float-and¬-sink procedure on a commercial scale. Just as wood chips float on water and sand sinks, so coal floats and refuse sinks when placed in a medium intermediate in specific gravity between the coal and refuse. Liquids intermediate in specific gravity between coal and refuse used in commercial plants are of four types: (1) Organic liquids of high specific gravity-halogenated hydrocarbons; (2) dissolved salts in water; (3) pseudo liquids obtained by suspending solids, such as sand, in water, and (4) fluidizing a mass of sand or other solids by air currents. Those most widely used for cleaning coal are solutions of calcium chloride in water and a suspended-sand pseudo liquid. Laboratory float-and-sink testing is an intermittent operation during which every opportunity is given for particles lighter than the medium to float and particles heavier to sink. Commercial processes are con¬tinuous, vertical and horizontal currents of the separating medium occur as either part of the process or unavoidedly produced by the intro¬duction of feed and withdrawal of products, so that the exact separation of the laboratory technique is not duplicated by commercial processes. However, separations close to the theoretical are obtained in commercial machines by careful technical control of the process. Most machines in commercial installations are crowded to get as much out of the equipment as possible, so that careful technical control is necessary to get the recoveries and grade of product desired. Sizes usually cleaned are plus %6-in. or plus 3-in. in the United States and plus 36-in. in Great Britain. Coal as small as 1 mm. has been cleaned in some experimental installations. The separation of coal from refuse in sizes finer than about % in. is made difficult by viscosity effects and hence at the present time cleaning is confined to the coarser . sizes. Beginning the year 1938, the East and East Central Texas district comprised 48 counties, which is equivalent to the Texas Railroad Commission districts 5 and 6. At the close of the year there were 46 oil and gas fields in this district. Eight other fields, seven oil and one gas, have been abandoned. Exploratory Drilling During the year, 113 exploratory wells were drilled. Nine discoveries were made, five of which proved to be oil fields, three distillate, and one gas. Completions for the district were 2043 oil wells (distillate wells included), 36 gas wells and 163 dry holes. Exclusive of the East Texas field, the Marion County extension of the Rodessa field led the district in the number of completions during the year. Production and Proration All fields in the district produced a total of 182,369,484 bbl. of oil, a decrease of 12.57 per cent compared with the 208,594,453 bbl. produced during 1937. The East Texas field produced 148,189,913 bbl., which was 81.6 per cent of the district's production for 1938. November daily average oil production for the East and East Central district was 469,102 bbl. The estimated cumulative production to Jan. 1, 1939, for this district was 1,753,894,802 bbl. It is estimated that the East and East Central district produced 38.9 per cent of the state's total production for the year, which was 468,781,632 barrels. The decrease in 1938 production, as compared to that of 1937, in this district was partly due to the Saturday and Sunday shutdowns, 71 days for the year, which is equivalent to 19.45 per cent of the year. All fields in this district were affected by shutdowns except the Texas portion of the Rodessa field, which was shut in only during January and February. GENERAL NOTES Liner Design for Comminution Liners in crushers and mills are the mechanical link between machine and ore. The way liners transfer energy to media and ore determines to large degree the production rate, liner wear rate, maintenance cost, energy use, and availability of the comminution process. Plant capacity and mineral recovery economics, and return on investment, are thus strongly dependent upon these simple, low cost metal shapes of which so much is demanded. The complexity of dynamic relationships between liner configuration, material properties, ore characteristics, and operating parameters defy simplistic generalization. Rules-of-thumb and axioms of years past fall into disuse almost daily as new analytical methods, assisted by computers and sophisticated control systems, are applied to crushing and grinding processes. Recent literature is well supplied with references citing production benefits that improved liner designs produce. This chapter is intended to review especially promising liner designs and material developments and presents cameo case studies showing the benefits derived from their application to comminution circuits (Tables 1,2,4,5,7). Complete discussions of liner design and wear materials are beyond the scope of this chapter. Norman's comprehensive studies in references (1) and (2) and Mclvor's analyses of mill speed/configuration effects (3) are especially useful reading for designers and operators of crushing and grinding circuits. Changing trends in ore, product value, and costs of wear materials, interest, labor, and energy, make ongoing evolution of liner design equally important for existing mines and for projects still on the drafter's board. Original designs supplied as new equipment must, of necessity, be best estimates. These can usually be improved as operating experience replaces engineering forecasts. Advent of new materials or design concepts such as the Angular Spiral Liners (Korpi (4) ) or Norman's Bimetallic design (2) offer improvement potential that must be evaluated if a given circuit is to be kept competitive versus others making similar products.

In the author's previous paper an attempt was made to analyze in detail the gravitational effects arising from certain subterranean anomalies of simple form, and extending to infinity in three directions. As a result of this critical examination, certain features—which were considered to be characteristic of the anomalies under investigation—were disclosed, a close observance of which enables a complete interpretation to be reached. The most simple case was first considered; viz., that of a heavy horizontal plate, bounded above and below by horizontal planes, and extending to infinity on one side of a vertical plane containing the y axis, in the three directions + y, —y, and +x. After this, the investigation was extended to the case of a similar infinite horizontal block having an inclined face. In each case the form and behavior of the gradient curve and the curve of differential curvature were analyzed, and entirely distinct interpretations were put forward, based upon (1) the gradient, (2) the differential curvature and (3) a comparison of these two quantities. In continuation of the previous work, and as a preliminary to further analysis of more complex structures, certain factors will now be examined which characterize (1) the simple infinite vertical block and (2) an infinite block which is inclined to the vertical, formations which are of considerable practical interest, being typical of important. geological structures—intru-sive dikes, lodes, veins, etc.—and because, even though in nature these may be irregular, valuable guides to a more complete interpretation are obtained by assuming, as a first approximation, that they have the simple characteristics to be studied hereafter. In the previous paper certain preliminary assumptions were made in order to render the resulting deductions universally applicable and entirely independent of the particular scale employed. Knowledge of the relative floatability of silicate minerals is increasing in importance as flotation is being applied to the concentration of nonsulfides. Many silicates are in themselves commercial products amenable to concentration by flotation. Moreover, the selective flotation of other nonsulfide minerals, such as cassiterite, depends largely upon the floatability of associated gangue silicates. Differences in floatability existing between the various silicates have not- been sufficiently appreciated; for example, the feldspars that differ greatly in floatability have generally been merely treated as "feldspar." It was the purpose of the work described in this paper to determine by experiment the differences in floatability between silicates; to investigate the causes for such differences, and to discover a means of predetermining approximate floatability without the necessity of experimentation. Determining Floatability The relative floatability of 20 silicates so selected as to represent all of the more common silicate types1 was obtained by flotation tests enumerated in Table 1. The mineral to be floated was crushed dry on a steel plate, and screened repeatedly during crushing through an 80-mesh screen in order to produce a sand with all grains as close to 80 mesh as possible. The sand was placed in dilute (6N) hydrochloric acid until free of soluble foreign material, and then washed with tap water about ten times in order to remove both acid and fines. The resultant product, which averaged 82 per cent plus 200 mesh, was floated in 50-gram charges in a 50-gram Denver celluloid flotation machine with 0.008 gram of terpineol, and from 0.01 to 0.05 gram of oleic acid in a solution acidified with sulfuric acid. The degree of separation of one mineral from another was determined by counting under a nlicroscope the grains of each mineral, both in the concentrate and in the tailings, and comparing their relative abundance in each. A microelectrophoresis technique has been used to measure the zeta potential of quartz over a range of pH and ferric iron concentration. The results have been discussed in terms of the adsorption of ferric cations and ferric hydroxide to the quartz surface. Possible relationships between the experimental results and the flotation of quartz have been examined. The adsorption of multivalent cations at the surface of quartz has been studied by many investigators who have used a variety of experimental techniques ranging from streaming potential 1 to radiometric2 measurements. Two possible mechanisms of cation activation of quartz have emerged from the results of these investigations viz: the adsorption of the cation to the negatively charged quartz surface, followed by adsorption of the collector anion to the adsorbed cation site, or: formation of a cation-collector complex which is then adsorbed to the quartz surface. In many natural and industrial systems one of the most prevalent activating species for quartz is ferric iron, this is especially so in the acid-circuit, anionic flotation of iron ore. The adsorption of ferric iron to the quartz surface is complicated by the ability of ferric iron to form complexes with anions, a phenomena which is of minor importance in one of the most widely studied quartz activation processes, ca ++ activation.* *The pK value for [ca(oH)+]/ [ca2+] [oh-] is 1.46 indicating that the influence of Ca (OH)+ ions will be minor in all but strongly alkaline solutions. In order to obtain a better understanding of quartz activation by ferric iron the zeta potential of quartz in the presence of ferric iron has been measured over a range of pH and ferric iron concentration. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Materials: Selected samples of "rock clystal" quartz from New England, N.S.W., were ground in a pebble mill, washed for three hours in boiling concentrated hydrochloric acid, washed in hot chromic acid and then washed repeatedly with distilled water until the washing water gave no trace of chloride ion.

Commercially, celestite (SrSO,) is the only significant strontium mineral. Among other strontium-bearing minerals, only strontianite (SrCO,) occurs commonly; however, it is not an item of commerce. The principal production of celestite is in England, Mexico, and Spain. New production is now coming on stream in Canada. Consumption is mainly in the United States. Lesser quantities are consumed in Japan and Europe. Main uses are for the manufacture of strontium carbonate and nitrate. The carbonate is used in glass for TV tube face plates and in ferrites for magnets. The nitrate is used in pyrotechnics to which it imparts a characteristic brilliant red color, mainly in safety flares. Minor amounts of strontium compounds are used in electrolytic zinc manufacturing and very small quantities in greases, ceramics, soaps, alloys, and pharmaceuticals. Specifications and Prices Typical celestite specifications for the carbonate and nitrate markets are as follows: [ ] Celestite currently shipped from Mexico for carbonate manufacture tends to be slightly better than these industry specifications, assaying about 92-93% SrSO, with less than 1% BaSO, but it is generally below the 95% minimum required for nitrate production. Contract prices for celestite are approximately $32-34 per st at U.S. Port of Entry in 50 to 60-ton carload lots for Mexican material. Spot prices are generally reported as low as $20 per st but are for minor volumes. A recent sale of surplus from the U.S. stockpiles, announced by the General Service Administration (GSA), was 4005 st sold to Du Pont for $140- 455 or $35.07 per st. British celestite, ground, washed, and graded, 95% SrSO, bulk, ex- works, 240 mesh, is quoted at £ 28.75 per mt in British trade journals, and a recent figure quoted for crushed lump material was $36.00 per st f.0.b. vessel Bristol Channel port (1973). Specifications of manufactured carbonate made from celestite and sold in two grades, one to the glass industry, the other to the electronic industry for ferrites, are given in [Table 1]

This paper presents evidence of the general occurrence of methane in a large number of the coal fields of the United States and substantiates the apparent unnecessary differences in the ventilation requirements and codes in the various states, as was brought to the attention of the Committee on Mine Ventilation of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers at its Pittsburgh meeting in October, 1925, by J. A. Garcia. The data in his report have been compiled from the files of the Gas Laboratory of the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines and represent samples collected throughout the various states and submitted for analysis by its engineers, also by mine operators and State mining departments, since 1911. Several thousand analyses were available but most of them were rejected because they represented abnormal conditions, undefined place of sampling, special investigations, or duplications in the same mine. Only those samples were included which, without reasonable doubt, were ascertained to fall within three major classes, namely, main return, air splits, and face and rooms of live workings. In the case of air splits, and face and room samples, only the one which contained the highest percentage of methane found in a given mine was taken. OCCURHENCE OF METHANE IN COAL MINES OF THE UNITED STATES Obviously it is not feasible to present the detailed analytical data here and accordingly these data have been compiled into groups in a manner which it was thought would bring out clearly their significance. These are shown in Table 1 which includes the analyses of 310 samples of return air of approximately the same number of coal mines in 19 states. Because of changes in ownership and names the exact number could not be ascertained. The table also includes 337 samples from air splits and 263 from the face and rooms of some of the same mines represented by return air samples and from other mines in these states. A total of more than 400 mines are represented by Table 1.

At the San Francisco meeting of the Institute last year, I presented, through the courtesy of Dr. James Douglas, some results of experiments on the roasting and leaching of concentrator tailings. After it became apparent that flotation rather than leaching was clearly the better method of handling the particular problem under consideration, before dismantling the experimental equipment, some data were secured on roasting and leaching the concentrate itself in competition with smelting. Some of the results obtained are given in the following paper and they are of particular interest at this time in view of the large quantities of flotation concentrates with their somewhat difficult smelting characteristics now being produced. A complete wet processt consists of roasting and leaching the calcines in dilute sulphuric acid produced from the roaster gases, roasting the residue with salt and leaching with dilute tower liquors (the well-known Longmaid-Henderson process) and recovering the copper, silver and gold by cementation or electrolysis or a combination of both. It is evident, however, that the residue from the first leaching, carrying about 20 per cent. of the copper and all of the silver and gold, can be smelted if preferable. In considering the application of the scheme to individual cases, it must be remembered that freight plays a large part in any reduction process wherein smelting is not conducted at the mouth of the mine, and that it is not practicable today to build small smelting plants for individual operations, The experiments may be grouped under four main heads: Roasting, leaching, chloridizing residue, and recovery of copper from solutions. The products of two concentrators were used: The Nacozari concentrates were the product of a large modern mill not using flotation, the copper mineral being largely chalcopyrite; and the Tyrone concentrates, the product of an experimental mill including flotation, the copper mineral being chiefly chalcocite. The experimental work herein described is presented in support of the following broad hypothesis: Conditioning of metals and metallic sulphides by amine collectors involves metathetic reaction at the solid surface between the collector and an oxidized metallic compound, to produce a coating comprising an amine-bearing compound of low solubility in the system. The type of reaction is different in acid and in basic solutions; both types may occur simultaneously in near-neutral pulps. Experimental The experiments comprise contact-angle tests with a variety of metals and metallic sulphides and extraction teats on ground chalcocite. Contact-angle tests were made principally on metals. Covellite paralleled metallic copper in amine solution at pH 8.8 (Table 3) and in alkaline water, but maintained an angle of about 70° in Io-3 HCl solution, where metallic copper lost its angle. The tests with anionic collectors (Table I) indicate that the behavior of metals in general is parallel to that of their minerals in anionic solutions. It is believed that this is generally true with cationic collectors also, but the covellite test is a warning against a broad assumption to this effect. All test specimens were mounted in Transoptic.* All tests in conditioning solution were preceded by a test in distilled water; cleaning and polishing were continued in every case until the angle in water was zero. Subsequent transfers into and out of solutions and test cells were made in such a way as to prevent exposure of the surface to air.1 The amine used was primary laurylamine, Armour and Co., AM-1120. It was used in the form of the hydrochloride, obtained by precipitation with gaseous hydrochloric acid from an ether solution of the amine, and purified by two recrystallizations from ether-alcoho1.2 Inorganic and other test reagents were standard laboratory grades. Temperatures were not controlled; the probable range of test-solution temperatures is 650 to 80°F.

8.1-1. History and Description of Shovels. The history of excavating machinery is not clearly defined but the machines seem to have been originally developed for dredging activities, principally involving rivers and harbors. The first, as far as can be determined, was a steam "spoon dredge" developed by Grimshaw of Boulton and Watt of Sunderland, England, in 1796. The land machine forerunner of the present-day power shovel was not developed until 1835. It was invented by William Smith Otis, a young partner of a Philadelphia contracting firm by the name of Carmichael and Fairbanks. The moving force behind this invention was the heavy activity in railroad construction. From this early start the power shovel has developed from steam powering to internal-combution-engine powering and to electric powering. In both directions it has developed to its present state of a finely engineered and precision-built tool. Through the interim the railroad-type shovel, about a half-swing arrangement designed especially for making railroad cuts and mounted on rails, was developed. The rail-mounted shovel gradually gave way to the full revolving shovel. It was high on the list in 1912 and was practically extinct by 1927. From the beginning, a few of the small revolving shovels designed primarily for the general contractors' market had found their way into quarry and mining operations. During this same period, the stripping shovel had been introduced-a 2 ½ cu. yd., 100-ton, full revolving stripping machine with a 41 ft boom. Although this shovel was designed especially for stripping, it was also used for heavy-duty, open pit mining service. In 1925 the heavy-duty, full revolving quarry and mine machine was developed. Strip mining shovels evolved through a somewhat separate path. Hand digging plows and mule-drawn slip scrapers were first reported used by Kirkland, Blakeney and Groves near Danville, Illinois for strip mining

WHEN miners in the interior coal fields of the United States began the practice of blasting the coal without undercutting, or what is known as "shooting off the solid," many explosions resulted, some of them of great extent and 'violence, and attended with large loss of life. One of the means adopted for preventing this large loss of life, though not preventive of explosions, was to employ shot firers to discharge the shots when all the other employees had gone out of the mine at the end of the day's shift. This system still prevails in most of the Central and Southwestern mines. Following the disaster at Winter Quarters mine, Utah, May 1, 1900, in which 200 lives were lost, a system of firing shots electrically from outside and when the men were out of the mine was adopted at the mines of the Utah Fuel Co.1 This system has also been used in France in certain mines that are subject to instantaneous outbursts of carbonic acid gas. These outbursts generally occurred at shot-firing time, on account of the blasts releasing the gas held in crevices under high pressure. The system was also adopted at a number of other mines in Utah, at the Cokedale mine, Colorado, at the Dawson mines, New Mexico, and in some mines of the Tennessee Coal, Iron & Railroad Co. in the Birmingham Ala. district; and more recently in certain mines in Iowa and Kansas. At first there was considerable trouble from misfires, and in a few instances from premature firing, while men were in the mine, through the shot-firing lines becoming crossed with power lines. Fortunately, however, no loss of life resulted from such premature firing within the knowledge of the writers, and latterly this danger has been reduced to a minimum by certain measures of precaution. With the continued development of low-grade porphyry copper deposits by open pit mining, substantial amounts of copper-bearing strip material have been accumulated in waste dumps adjacent to the many large mines. Since the end of World War II, the production of copper from leaching these copper-bearing wastes increased from approximately 4% of the total copper production to 10% by the early 1960's. Projected increases will probably raise this figure to 20 to 30% by the early 1970's. Furthermore, a gradual recognition of the economic feasibility of leaching mined-out areas is evident and will undoubtedly contribute additional production. Waste dumps in canyons and gulches on the periphery of open pit mines, mine stopes, caved areas, and abandoned open pits often contain substantial quantities of leachable rock ranging in concentration from 0.1 to 0.4% copper. Recent developments in the leaching of copper, mainly the recognition of bacterial oxidation of sulfide minerals combined with better under- standing of the control of the salt content of the leach solutions, both by adjusting the pH and/or by hydrolysis, are resulting in a greatly expanded recovery of copper from these hitherto uneconomic mine rejects. 11.5-1. Mechanism of Leaching. Leaching processes for the extraction of metal values from mine ore or waste may be classified for convenience as either chemical leaching or bacterial leaching. Chemical leaching is considered to be the extraction of soluble salts by metathesis in acidic, basic, or neutral water solutions. The reactions involved may be evaluated by chemical thermodynamics. Bacterial leaching, although a chemical process, is dependent on biological catalysis and this is generally a much more complex process. This justifies its separate treatment in the application to leaching. Acid ferric sulfate solutions are commonly employed in the mining industry to leach valuable metals from metal sulfide ores. The leaching mechanism is a reduction-oxidation reaction in which minerals are oxidized at the expense of ferric sulfate. Such chemical leaching is profitable when

Under the title, Labor-Saving Appliances in the Works-Laboratory, I published a paper1 in which mas described how multi-manipulations in a works-laboratory and in the furnace-room of an assay-laboratory, can be condensed into single manipulations by applying the proper mechanical devices. For example, I now deposit ill, or withdraw from, a muffle a set of 48 cupels as one unit. The front row (8) of these are blanks or heaters; the other 40, when they have attained the proper temperature in the muffle, are charged simultaneously with the 40 lead-buttons. Three manipulations here accomplish an operation which by the generally customary method requires 136, and this number is only limited by the size of muffle and cnpels. This operation is an enlargement of what I have already described in my former paper, and Fig. 1 shows the improved implements. In the paper referred to I described a gold-silver bead parting-bath, which is the last of the devices used in regular sequence in practice. This bath mas designated as being convenient, but mas not a labor-saver properly. Fig. 2 of the present paper shows a new device. Instead of the original tray, there are now sectional holders for the test-tubes, each having a wooden handle on either end, so that the holders ma?-be removed from the boiling bath, and the acid or water poured oE from each set of tubes (in this case, 7) without waiting to cool. The tubes, held in place by clutches, as shown in Pig. 3, rest in holes in the base-strip, having a smaller diameter than the tubes. Each holder is stamped at either end with a number, so that the bath becomes further useful by permitting several men to use it at the same time without interference. Apart from the handles, the holders are made of sheet-copper.
