The Kevitsa Ni-Cu-PGE deposit in northern Finland contains disseminated Ni-Cu-Fe sulfides, and platinum-group minerals (PGM). The 2.05 Ga-old ultramafic-mafic, funnel-shaped intrusion is intruded into a volcanosedimentary sequence. The major ore minerals are pentlandite, hexagonal pyrrhotite and troilite, chalcopyrite, cubanite and magnetite. Pyrrhotite and pentlandite are replaced by pyrite, millerite and heazelwoodite near the surface. Nickeline, maucherite and gersdorffite are locally abundant. A pilot feed sample of 575 t of the main orebody at Kevitsa had average grades 0.45 per cent Cu, 0.36 per cent Ni, 1.85 per cent S, 0.33 g/t Pt, 0.34 g/t Pd and 0.19 g/t Au, with 0.06 per cent Ni contained in silicates. Higher PGE contents (2 - 27 ppm) occur in a vertical N-S bearing fault zone. The PGM (n = 6022) mapped in specimens of four drill holes, consist of sperrylite 34.7 vol per cent, braggite and cooperite 18.5 vol per cent, geversite 17.2 vol per cent, moncheite 14.7 vol per cent, merenskyite 6.7 vol per cent, stibiopalladinite 4.3 vol per cent, sobolevskite 1.9 vol per cent, kotulskite 0.7 vol per cent, michenerite 0.6 vol per cent, keithconnite 0.3 vol per cent, rustenburgite 0.1 vol per cent, melonite, froodite, laurite together 0.1 vol per cent and only a few grains of sudburyite, irarsite, vysotskite, erlichmanite, hongishiite, Pt-Cu-alloys, three undefined Pd and Pt bismuthinides and antimonides and a Pd-Cu-bearing Pt-Ni-Fe sulfide. Most of the PGM, 62 per cent, are enclosed in silicates, 29 per cent are intergrown with sulfides, nine per cent are within sulfides. A portion of the PGE occurs in solid solution in sulfides and arsenides. Ni flotation yielded smelter-grade concentrates averaging 12.2 per cent nickel. The average sulfide Ni recovery is 78.8 per cent and total Ni recovery is 65.3 per cent. The average Pt is 10 g/t at 55 per cent recovery, Pd 7.7 g/t at 38 per cent recovery and Au 1.6 g/t at ten per cent recovery. Cu concentrates averaged 28.6 per cent Cu with an average recovery of 78 per cent and further 11 per cent in the nickel concentrate. The copper concentrate contains 4 g/t Au at 24 per cent recovery. The average Fe to MgO ratio 17.9 is well above the targeted minimum of 4.5. The pilot results show that the previously used TETA (triethylene tetramine) can be avoided and good quality, smelter-grade concentrates can be produced from the Kevitsa ore at economical levels of recovery by conventional flotation methods.

"The bad effects upon the health and output of miners that result when the ventilating current in a mine lacks sufficient cooling power have been described by Harrington and Sayers in a previous report (1)*** The normal temperature of the human body is about 98.5°F. and whenever work is done by the muscles, indeed even when sitting still, the normal bodily processes generate heat which must be given off, otherwise the body will become overheated and a number of bad effects will be produced. If it were possible to so enclose a man that he could continue to breathe and no heat could escape from his body he would die within a short time. In a series of experiments made at the Pittsburgh Station of the Bureau of McConnell and Houghton (2) found that a dry-bulb and a wet-bulb temperature of 112.5°F could he borne for only 35 minutes, even when the subject was at rest. A wet-bulb temperature of 100.4°F (dry-bulb 157°F) could only be tolerated for 45°F minute. Under such conditions the bodily temperature rises as much as 45°F above normal and the pulse is accelerated. Very uncomfortable sensations are felt when the pulse rate exceeds 135. The human body, like any other internal combustion engine, must be cooled in order to function properly.Under ordinary circumstances the air surroundings people is enough coder than themselves to permit this heat generated within the boiy to be river off with¬out difficulty. At higher temperatures, or when the rate of work, with its corresponding generation of heat is high, the body can not throw off heat fast enough, so it begins to sweat and the evaporation of the sweat cools the body. But the results of the experiments cited above indicate that in still air, even with the body at rent, it can not adjust its temperature when the air is above 90° wet- bulb. J. S. Haldane (4) says ""at a wet-bulb temperature of 60°F the actual amount of work done by the miner begins to fall off; as the wet bulb temperature rinse farther the work Bona gradually diminishes to the vanishing point. Then the temperatures indicated by the wet-bulb exceeds 85°F hard work in a mine seems hardly or the commercial working of a mine the wet-bulb thermometer should not in generaI, be allowed to rise above 80°F, unless perhaps where there it a good current."

In general, overall experience has shown that the approach to the appointment of a project manager is given much attention, but little specific attention is given first to the risk associated with the project conceptual design and its overall executability within either the new legislative framework or the sustainability of the outcome. The risk in project executability and sustainability within the ?new age? legislative framework of the Mining Charter, etc, is itself however, of far greater importance. The degree of importance being defined by the intended projects impact on the business going forward. This is particularly the case where the intention of the implementation is effectively to turn around or even enhance a loss-making strategic investment like a mine or process plant operation in an ?old-order rights? or Brownfield?s operation. This paper attempts to highlight the importance of a ?pre-project project? (PPP) to mitigate the risk in the ?new age?, with specific reference to operational due diligence (ODD) and project conceptual design.

Diaphragm walls (D-walls) are known as underground structural elements commonly used for retention systems and permanent foundation elements. In addition, they are also quite often used as deep groundwater barriers, called Cut-Off-Walls (COW). Shanghai ranks third among the most densely populated metropolises in the world. In 1990, only eight million people lived there. Today, Shanghai has about25 million inhabitants. The increasing demand to accommodate the infrastructure of growing megacities like Shanghai pushes the required depth for subway, sewage and foundation projects to the limit. Future projects will demand excavation depths of more than 100 m (328 ft) on a regular basis. Already carried out reference projects will be described and a general outlook for upcoming projects will be given. The paper also explains the installation process in general focusing on the use of trench cutter technology. INTRODUCTION D- walls are known as underground structural elements, commonly used as retention systems for excavation pits and shafts as well as permanent foundation walls or elements. It is anticipated that, with the increasing trend of utilizing more and more underground space to accommodate environmental considerations and urban/suburban development, there will be an increasing requirement for diaphragm wall usage in even more difficult conditions and with increasing depth. The trench cutter is the most important tool for performing this work. The hydraulic grab, a well-known and valuable excavation tool for d-walls reaches its limits in terms of depth and when cutting rock. Therefore the trench cutter technology will be in the focus of this paper. The trench cutter itself is a reverse circulation excavation tool. It consists of a heavy steel frame with two drive gears attached to its bottom end, which rotates in opposite direction around the horizontal axis. Cutter wheels are mounted onto the drive gears. As they rotate, the soil beneath the cutter wheels is continuously broken up, removed, mixed with the bentonite slurry in the trench and moved towards the opening of the suction box of the pump? A centrifugal pump located right above the cutter wheels conveys the slurry via a hose system up to a desanding plant. There the slurry loaded with soil and rock particles is cleaned and returned into the trench.

THE Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Co., Asbestos, Que. has operated for a number of years, supplying the parent company, Johns-Manville, raw material for asbestos products. The mine is situated in the 70-mile-long serpentine belt running from Asbestos, Que. on the west to East Broughton on the east. This district is the most important producing area in the world of quality spinning-fiber asbestos, with 11 operating mines supplying 70 pct of the world's needs. The Jeffrey mine, located 90 miles from Montreal and approximately 35 miles southwest of Thetford, accounts for 50 pct of the Canadian asbestos output. Production from the Canadian serpentine belt is the chrysotile asbestos, which is considered the best available for spinning. Consumers in the United States prefer the clean, fine fibers of the Canadian chrysotile of the type produced by the Jeffrey mine. Mining In 1881, when the mine was first opened, all work, including drilling, was done by hand. The deposit, located on a hillside, was first worked as a sidehill cut by hand drilling 15-ft holes and blasting with black powder. The fiber was chiselled from the broken rock. Hand derricks, later powered by horses, were used to raise the rock as the pit deepened. Eventually, the pit became so deep that derricks were, by necessity, replaced by aerial tramways. In the late 1930's, further deepening of the open pit, with the resulting constriction of the pit bottom brought about the need for altering the mining system then in use. The high ratio of overburden to be handled to mill ore mined and the value of surface structures, not company property, that would be destroyed in expanding the area of the pit, definitely indicated vertical rather than horizontal expansion would have to be used. One exception to this was that a small area on company property to north and east of the pit could be opened up. The mining problem then resolved itself into two phases; make the small lateral expansion and as rapidly as possible choose a mining method that would expand the mine vertically. Several methods for vertical expansion were studied and rejected. Methods considered included shrinkage stoping, block caving, glory holing, and various modifications of open workings. Block caving was finally accepted as the most suitable method of underground development. Cost factors and production were important factors in the decision, also, the asbestos mines in the Thetford area were already having success with this method. Original plans provided for the lateral expansion of the open mine where possible and beginning the underground operation. This program was based on the open pit being worked out in 1954, with the underground development and production gradually increasing until the open mine was depleted. In 1949, the plan was changed to allow underground development to progress at maximum so that underground output would be 550 tons per hr by 1951. Any deficit in ore would be mined from the open pit. This change permitted extending the life of the open pit through 1964 and in this time would make available a large quantity of readily attained ore. Block Caving at The Jeffrey Mine Plans for the underground operation were formulated on a 12,000-ton-per-day basis, and the adaptability of block caving methods to high production presented a desirable situation. As shown in the main-haulage plan, a continuous loop was laid out for smooth operation of the underground railroad from the loading points to the underground crusher. A feature encountered at the Jeffrey mine, as well as other asbestos mines using caving methods, is the large size of caved material, requiring that ore be crushed before hoisting.

Elemental carbon (EC) is used as a surrogate for regulating the exposure to diesel particulate matter (DPM) of underground metal/non-metal miners. EC was chosen as a surrogate because EC is selective to DPM and is a major component of DPM. Using EC as a surrogate also gives one the advantages of no sampling artifacts and being able to sample at all locations in the mine. Currently, EC represents DPM well in underground mines. Some control technologies have been shown to possibly alter the relationship between DPM and EC and characteristics of DPM. Therefore, future work will investigate the relationship between DPM and EC as new control technologies are implemented.

"Automation offers the mining industry great potential for improvements in productivity and safety. However, the experience of introducing automation in other industries has been that the full potential of new technology is not always realised. Designers are surprised, for example, to find that automation does not eliminate human errors. Unwanted and unexpected consequences also arise if the introduction of automation fails to consider how people will adapt to the new technology. A focus on the technical aspects of automation is necessary but not sufficient for success. The potential for improvements in productivity and safety promised by automation will only be achieved if the joint cognitive system that emerges from the combination of humans and automation is designed to perform the functions required for system success. Less than two years ago, the, Congress, with broad bipartisan support, passed the Energy Security Act of 1980. A decade marked by ten- fold increases in world oil prices and two major interruptions in oil flows from the Middle East had ended. An all-out national commitment to transform America's vast tar sands, oil shale and coal resources into conventional fuels had begun. The national synfuels effort was to be public-private cooperation at a scale unmatched in peace time. Private industry would own and operate the synthetic fuels facilities. Government would reduce market uncertainties to acceptable levels. The potential government commitment was substantial. Up to $88 billion would be available through the Synthetic Fuels Corporation, principally in the form of contingent financing. Billions more would be spent through Department of Energy programs. Additional incentives for alternate energy development were contained in the Energy Tax Act of 1978. The Energy Security Act clearly specified national synthetic fuels production objectives: 500,000 barrels per day by 1987 -- 2 million barrels per day by 1992. Finally, said Congress, Uncle Sam was going to do something about rapidly rising oil prices, uncertainties of energy supply, and the resulting disruption to the U. S. economy. Simply put, the purpose of the Energy Security Act of 1980 was to provide government guarantees sufficient to get synthetic fuels projects off the private sector drawing boards and into commercial production. Because of their huge cost, technological uncertainty, and lengthy pay-out period, these projects were always second place to projects of smaller size, known technology and more rapid pay-out. The Energy Security Act was the legal expression of public policy to bring the free-market synfuels timetable into line with the faster paced political timetable in the interest of national energy security.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 374 natural gas samples from 24 States and 5 foreign countries. These samples were collected during calendar year 1966 as a part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses of foreign samples contained in this publication represent the first samples received as a result of this expanded program. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Eight previous publications have been made to present the results of 7,244 gas analyses made? by the Bureau of Mines Helium Activity prior to 1966. "Spent auto-catalyst is a promising secondary resource of platinum group metals (PGMs), which are being extensively used in automobiles catalytic converters to control the hazardous gaseous emissions (CO, NOx and hydrocarbons). Several pyro or hydrometallurgical routes has been employed to recover PGMs from such spent materials but there is no proper process for recovering the other constituents metals. Therefore, it causes the loss of other major constituents like, Al and Mg along with rare earth metal Ce. In the present study, we investigate the dissolution of Al and Mg using sodium hydroxide (NaOH) roasting followed by a sulfuric acid (H2SO4) leaching; thereby concentrating the PGMs and Ce in leached residues. The effect of roasting temperature, time and amount of NaOH were varied. Subsequently, the dissolution behavior of metals in H2SO4 as a function of acid concentration was investigated from the roasted samples. At an optimal condition for roasting at 600°C with 1:1 NaOH-to-catalyst ratio and 60 min duration, the maximum of Al and Mg were dissolved in 1 M H2SO4 solution at ambient temperature (~25°C). Thus obtained leached residues containing enriched PGMs and Ce content can be treated separately for the recovery of these high-value metals.INTRODUCTION Spent auto-catalyst has been considered as a potential resource for recovering the platinum group metals (PGMs) (Jha et al., 2013). The commonly used auto-catalyst is made of cordierite (2MgO.2Al2O3.5SiO2) in which the chloro complexes of PGMs are impregnated onto the surfaces of porous washcoat of alumina substrate (Aberasturi et al., 2011). The average concentration of PGMs in ore are 2-4 g/ton for Pt, 7-2 g/ton for Pd and 0.2-0.5 g/ton for Rh, whereas, an individual catalytic converter weighing about 1 - 2 kg contains on average 1.56 g Pt, 0.62 g Pd and 0.156 g Rh (Upadhyay et al., 2013). Moreover, recovery of PGMs from spent auto-catalyst offers other advantages like, simple process, low cost and less pollution, as compared to recovery from primary resources (Dong et al., 2015).Therefore, technologies to recover PGMs from spent auto-catalyst has become attractive in the recent past and their recycling contribution has been accounted for 35% Pt, 26% Pd and 36% Rh of the quantity consumed in the production of auto-catalysts (Johnson Matthey, 2016)."

Excavation bracing is a special structural system. It is built from the top down. The design is controlled by the economical construction of another structure as well as by the movement of the ground beyond the limits of its construction. It serves a number of purposes, all subordinate to the construction of the principal structure. Despite its importance, bracing design and construction is frequently overlooked in project planning, causing delays and expensive changes. Thoughtful planning, good design and resourceful, innovative construction can improve construction safety and save time and money.

The Finnish Defence Forces has destroyed old and spoilt munitions in open surface mass detonations at Hukkakero fell in municipality of Kittilä, Lapland, since 1988. The technique was learned from Sweden. The destruction camp is organized every year at autumn and it lasts 4-5 weeks. During the disposal period one or two charges are exploded per day. The gross weight of a typical charge varies from 150-250 tons including 15-25 tons of explosives. They mainly consist of TNT, but may also contain smaller amounts of amatol and hexotol. As a booster there have been used 2-3 tons of emulsion explosives.

Proximity detection systems (PDSs) for mobile machines have the potential to decrease injuries and fatalities. Early adopters of the technology have identified some challenges, which present an opportunity to explore and improve the integration of mobile PDSs in underground coal mines. The current research study applied the task-technology fit framework to investigate the fit between mobile PDS technology and mining relative to health and safety, from the perspective of leaders at two coal mines. Quantitative results from the study show that mine leaders evaluated mobile PDS favorably for training and ease of use, system feedback, user authorization and experience, and less favorably for safety, compatibility, task completion, and reliability. Qualitative results reveal specific task, mine, and system characteristics that may have influenced leaders’ evaluations. The study includes considerations and suggestions for safe technology integration

Estimates indicate that the total reserves of ore in this country suitable for making ferro would hardly supply domestic requirements for ten years, even if it could all be mined in that time. The grade of ore called for by present practice must come from abroad. The present tariff policy of this country is stated to cost industry $8,000,000 in order to force production of manganese ore to the extent of $600,000. What is the wise thing to do? Should a stock be accumulated? If so, how? Is it feasible to change practice and use low-grade ore or to beneficiate the ores of this grade and meet our requirements? What progress is being made in this direction? ,These and similar questions are raised in the various papers that have been submitted and will be open for dis-cussion.

A soldagem de uniões dissimilares é muito comum em sistemas usados na exploração de petróleo e produção em águas profundas no mar. Comumente envolve soldagem de tubos de aço de baixo carbono com aços forjados baixa liga, muitas vezes, com revestimento interno de Inconel com o objetivo de reduzir o nível de tensões residuais seguidos de tratamentos térmicos de pós-soldagem. Uma técnica alternativa para reduzir as tensões residuais é utilizar um eletrodo que, durante o processo de resfriamento passa por uma transformação martensítica em uma temperatura relativamente baixa, de modo que a deformação resultante da transformação compense a contração durante o processo de resfriamento. Desta forma, o objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar o emprego do maraging como metal de solda em união dissimilar de materiais aplicadas na indústria do petróleo. Foram usados amostras de aços estruturais chanfradas em meio-v e soldadas utilizando varetas. Os níveis de tensões residuais e microestruturas da zona afetada pelo calor (ZAC) foram investigados. Uma verificação importante foi que a junta soldada apresentou tensões compressivas no metal de solda.

George W. Maynard, New York, N. Y.:—It is well known that there are many magnetite-mines of which the ore is too low-grade for direct use in the blast-furnace. For carrying out the sintering process, the preliminary step, in the case of magnetites, is the separation of the ore from the gangue by magnetic concentration. The resulting fine-grain product is very objectionable in the blast-furnace, and when used must be a very small percentage of the charge. The sintering process has saved the situation by furnishing a product which is absolutely ideal on account of its cellular structure. (In reply to questions by W. J. Tudor, and Joseph W. Richards, the following additional information was given by Dr. Maynard.) The percentage of iron in the product is determined entirely by the degree of concentration of the raw material and is practically not increased by the sintering operation. The magnetic concentrates at Port Henry and at the Benson and one or two other mines contain from 65 to 67 per cent. of metallic iron. The cost of sintering is from 39 to 41 cents per ton of product, including superintendence, depreciation, and repairs. The itemized figures are about as follows : Mixing (including labor), 24; power, 9; ignition, 5; repairs, 3; total, 41 cents. Prof. J. W. Richards, South Bethlehem, Pa.:—From a metallurgical standpoint I question the accuracy of the statement on p. 374: " C.—An increased reducibility of the iron so treated. (This has been conservatively estimated as 5 per cent. better than the best available ore.)" It seems to me that when a material is' sintered in this way, the constituents present, as lime, silica, and alumina, have a chance to form a compound with the iron oxide; that such a compound, if formed before the material goes into the blast-
