The overall objective of the subject contract was to investigate the application, economic, and safety considerations of electrical-shock prevention techniques applied to surface and underground mines. Volume I of the four-volume final report starts by summarizing all research performed, and synopses of the three other report volumes are included. The balance of this volume concerns one major task of the contract, the protection of maintenance personnel. After specifying the scope of work for the task, electrical is defined, and needed ground-fault relay characteristics to prevent ventricular fibrillation are established. This is followed by an analysis of alternating-current systems, a comparison of these systems with respect to body currents, and the advantages and disadvantages of the various ground-fault protection techniques. An analysis of direct-current systems for off-track vehicles is then covered. These analyses form the basis for the research recommendations which along with suggestions for future research, conclude the report volume.

The use of high pressure fluid cavitation is investigated as a means of breaking an ore into its constituent grains. This Cavitational Rock Dissagregation (CRD) is found to be possible and effective in breaking down galena ore, both in sandstone and dolomite host material. The technique did not work as well in comminuting and cleaning oil shale, because the cavitation drove the oil into emulsion with the water. The presence of dominant bedding in the rock also caused preferential breakage to these lines, rather than to the individual grain boundaries. This problem was also encountered in tests on igneous ore where weakness plants of the overall ore proved weaker than the boundaries of the individual grains. It was found that the prevailing expression of cavitation erosion dependence on pressure was not absolutely valid. In contrast it was found that CRD is much more sensitive to jet flow diameter, and when this was recognized it was found possible to erode rock with compressive strength of up to 350 MPa with operating jet pressures of 10 MPa.

"A novel reagent-free method of extracting gold from gravity middling concentrates in the Yukon placer fields is presented in this paper. This method exploits the malleability of gold by submitting concentrates to grinding in a rod mill. Brittle waste minerals are effectively reduced, whereas malleable gold particles are flattened and are then extracted by classification through sieves. Recoveries in the field using a laboratory-sized rod mill regularly exceeded 90%, whereas correlation laboratory tests indicated recovery to be most sensitive to the mill charge size. This method has broad potential, including application to the gravity circuits of large hard-rock processing circuits.RÉSUMÉ Cet article présente une nouvelle méthode sans agents réactifs d’extraction de l’or dans les concentrés gravimétriques mixtes que l’on trouve dans les districts placériens du Yukon. Cette méthode exploite la malléabilité de l’or en broyant des concentrés dans un broyeur à barres. Les déchets miniers cassants sont bien réduits, alors que les particules d’or malléables sont écrasées puis extraites par classification au travers de cribles. Si les récupérations sur le site à l’aide d’un broyeur à barres de laboratoire excèdent 90 %, les essais de concordance en laboratoire indiquent que la récupération est très sensible à la taille de la charge du broyeur. Cette méthode présente un grand potentiel, notamment une application possible aux circuits gravimétriques des grands circuits de traitement des roches dures.INTRODUCTIONExploiting the high density of gold to separate it from waste materials is the oldest known mineral processing technique. This basic technique is still widely used in gravity concentration circuits today; however, gravity processing invariably results in high-value middlings, especially in the Yukon placer gold fields. In addition to having a uniquely high density, gold is also the most malleable metal. This unique malleability can be exploited to extract gold from otherwise inaccessible gravity middlings.The Yukon placer gold industry has been continuously ongoing since the 1860s, and today produces approximately 60,000 oz t (1.87 million grams) of crude gold annually, most of which is from the Klondike region near Dawson City (Van Loon & Bond, 2014). It is important to note that Yukon placer miners do not use any chemical extraction methods; rather, gravity upgrading methods are the sole processing techniques used. Placer deposits are typically coarse, well liberated, and naturally gravity concentrated and recoverable, thus making more expensive chemical extraction unnecessary (Mitchell, Evans, & Styles, 1997). Furthermore, a strict permitting regime, environmental concerns, lack of expertise, and fear of repercussions from regulators prevent miners from attempting more advanced processing methods, such as flotation or cyanidation. Even simple chemical extractions like mercury amalgamation have not been implemented for decades, with one observer noting that, as many as 30 years ago, “the art of mercury for amalgamating appear[ed] to be dying [in the Yukon]” (Osler, 1983)."

The equilibrium distribution of Cu, Fe and Ni between Cu-Ni-Fe mattes and Pt alloy was measured as functions of the sulphur partial pressure (pS2), oxygen partial pressure (pO2),temperature and Fe content of the matte. The distribution ratios of Cu, Fe and Ni between matte and alloy were independent of oxygen pressure when the pS2was fixed at 2.5x10-5atm and pO2was varied between 10-15and 10-12atm. The distribution ratio of Cu, Fe and Ni increased as the sulphur partial pressure increased. The Cu and Ni distribution ratios decreased with increasing temperature and the Fe distribution ratio increased slightly over the temperature range of1350?1500°C. For mattes where the proportions of Cu and Ni were kept constant, the distribution ratio of Cu increased as the Fe content in the matte increased. The Fe and Ni distribution appeared to be independent of the iron content in the matte and had a value of 1.2 and 1.6 respectively. The activity of Cu, Fe, Ni in the matte was calculated using a regular solution model for solid Pt-Fe-Ni-Cu alloy. The activity coefficient of Cu, Fe and Ni decreased as pO2and pS2increased.The activity coefficients also appeared to be independent of the Fe content and temperature over the range of 36 to 54 wt% iron and 1350 to 1500°C respectively. The Mississippi embayment east of the Mississippi River is part of a vast geologic and hydrologic province. The abundance of water available is largely responsible for the agricultural history of the area and is perhaps the key factor in the rapidly accelerating trend toward industrialization. The multiple artesian aquifer systems that underlie the region and the alluvial aquifer along the Mississippi River are virtually undeveloped sources of fresh water in that they are yielding only a fraction of the water available. The potential yield of the 12 aquifer systems is estimated to be about 25,000 mgd (million gpd) of which only about 600 mgd is presently being withdrawn. The amount of water in storage in these systems is about 1600 trillion gal. Ground water having a dissolved-solids content of less than 500 ppm is generally available at depths of less than 1000 ft, and water having a dissolved-solids content of less than 1000 ppm is available in some places to depths of more than 3000 ft. Iron is the most common troublesome chemical constituent in the ground water. Water in varying amounts is also available from streams within the region. The amount of water which originates within the region and which leaves it as streamflow during a year averages about 50 million acre-ft (about 45,000 mgd). An additional 375 million acre-ft (about 340,000 mgd), which originated outside the region, leaves the region as streamflow during an average year. Some streams have considerable flow during periods of no precipitation and the water during these periods generally has a low dissolved-solids content. Large quantities of water from streams and waterbearing sands (aquifers) are available in the Mississippi embayment east of the Mississippi River. Most of the region is underlain by aquifer systems that will yield large quantities of water to wells, making ground water the most readily available source of fresh water. About 90% of the water used in the region is obtained from wells. Streams have been used primarily to dispose of, and dilute, wastes that have been dumped into them. The Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee rivers, and the lower parts of the Tombigee and Yazoo rivers also serve as a means of transportation. This nominally water-rich region receives from 48 to 56 in. of precipitation in average years and is crossed by several large rivers. The largest, the Mississippi River, is the western boundary of the region discussed in this paper. The economy of the region is basically agricultural, but industry has become increasingly important since World War 11. The diversification and mechanization of agriculture have resulted in a surplus of manpower, most of which is being absorbed by the expansion of industry. Further industrial expansion probably will occur because of the available manpower, natural resources and economical transportation. Increasing demands on available water supplies will be made and the future economic growth of the region will be largely dependent upon wise utilization and management of the water resources.

"A limestone mine in Ohio has had roof instability problems that have led to massive roof falls extending to the surface. This paper describes a collaborative study of these events undertaken by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and the mine owners. The study focuses on the roles that weak, moisture-sensitive floor and weak bands in pillars play in a general instability that led to roof falls at this mine. The NIOSH Stone Mine Pillar Design software (S-Pillar) does not include analysis for weak floor or weak bands and recommends that when such issues arise they should be investigated further using a more advanced analysis. It is important to recognize that without the impact of the floor or weak bands, the calculated inherent stability factor for these pillars is within the recommended design range. Therefore, to further investigate the observed instability occurring on a large scale at the Ohio mine, FLAC3D numerical models were employed to help determine the failure mechanism. Roof-to-floor extensometers were also installed in the areas predicted to have further instability. This case study will provide important information to limestone mine operators regarding the impact of weak floor causing the potential for roof collapse, pillar failure, and subsequent subsidence of the ground surface. This recent case demonstrates that weak floor can be a significant factor in pillar stability and should be assessed during the design stage of the mine.To an area-wide failure (Zipf, 2001). In that case, it appears that the pillars had actually remained intact. However, moisture-related yield of the weak floor caused deformations which passed through pillars and into the roof, triggering roof collapse around the intact pillars (Esterhuizen et al., 2011). This previous case and the case presented in this study, while not identical, both demonstrate that weak floor and/or bands within pillars can be a significant factor leading to instability."

Reasons are given for the seemingly excessive public concern with taxation of the mineral industry. Optimality of mineral extraction is a concept that requires careful definition in terms of one or more objectives. Once defined, the impact of taxation upon optimal mineral extraction may be studied; findings from earlier work on this topic are presented for two basically different cases. In conclusion it is observed that the pursuit of optimality requires the availability of highly skilled engineers; in the event of a large-scale mineral development it is this resource that is probably scarcest of all.

A quality characteristic analysed through construction of the Shewhart control chart is required to be normally distributed. In mining applications, this assumption is often violated as many quality characteristics follow skewed or lognormal distribution. In this paper, two methods were investigated using a heuristic approach for setting up the control limits for a skewed population. Based on these approaches a Mode chart, and a Weighted Variance (WV) control charts were constructed. The performance of the proposed methods was compared with the normal based Shewhart method through a case study conducted in a surface mine supplying iron ore to a steel plant. A simulation study was also conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed methods over the Shewhart method. The study revealed that the Shewhart control charts generated more out of control alarms compared with the Mode and Weighted Variance control charts for a skewed population of Fe%. The simulation results also revealed that for extremely high skewed population, the WV control chart and Mode control chart provided higher probability of coverage than the Shewhart method; although the detection rate (probability of detection) of out of control condition for these methods was slightly reduced compared with Shewhart method.

In 1987 and 1988, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied the 3,100-acre Borah Peak Wilderness Study Area (10-047-004) and a 708-acre parcel adjacent to the north in order to evaluate their identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Custer County, ID, about 18 mi northwest from MacKay. The study area lies along the western foothills of the Lost River Range and is underlain by quartzite, sandstone, shale, argillite, dolostone, and limestone. The Lost River fault, a major active fault, lies along the length of the study area. Large alluvial fans spread out from valleys originating east of the study area.

The occurrence of rock falls in underground coal mines entails detrimental effects as fatal or non-fatal injuries on workers, stoppages in mining operations and breakdown of equipment. In this paper, a risk assessment approach on the basis of a decision analysis trend is employed in order to assess the possibility of and manage roof falls. Risk is then assessed by determination of likelihood of occurrence and the cost of consequences (outcomes). In this regard, collected real roof fall data from Tabas and Kerman coal regions comprising of several underground coal mines are used. It is concluded that the annual accidents due to the roof falls occurrence in the all investigated mines are so high that it is economically feasible to improve the support systems and to implement a suitable educational program as well as an accurate supervision and other elements of safety management.

Although the occurrence of deposits of titanium minerals on Kenya’s present day beaches and adjacent dune systems has been well documented, the potential for older formations to host economically viable deposits had not been recognised until recently. The Magarini sands formation in Kenya has been found to contain deposits of ilmenite, rutile and zircon in quantities and grades that have the potential to be commercially exploited. Since 1995, Tiomin Resources Inc. has explored these deposits and has identified one deposit, the Kwale project, as being able to support the development of a mine producing some 300,000 tpa ilmenite, 75,000 tpa rutile and 37,000 tpa zircon. Tiomin plans to start production by late 2002. Construction of a US$137 million operation is set to commence in the first half of 2001.

More and more, today’s mining geologists are asked to identify and create 3D value domains for multidisciplinary usage: grade definition, geometallurgical performance and geotechnical characteristics, to name a few. Often, that domain shape is the result of an assumed or conjectured value as a surrogate to a set of conditions (eg kaolinite-rich, sericite alteration). Would it not be instead better to create the respective domain through identification of a consistent quantifiable geologically-based pattern as its basis?Critical to the identification of patterns is the transformation of 3D point data into a model by a method that uses few, if any, preselected thresholds. Too often we complicate the reviews of the modelled data by prejudging the value range of interest. And when we do revert to 2D views (ie sections and plans), we tend to only examine numbers or line traces. These hinder and obscure identification of geological patterns particularly in deposits of complex geology. Instead, these data should be looked at with minimal prejudgment and interrogated in 2D space by one of the best and most eye-catching display types: filled contour plots.Here we present two different processes that transform data with minimal preselection into formats that allow for pattern recognition by filled contour plots. These are: probability assisted constrained kriging (PACK) and multiple interval interpolant formation (Aranz Geo’s Leapfrog® software). The former creates a 3D model of probabilities on a threshold value; the latter creates numerous (=10), regularly-binned 3D interval interpolants. The results of each method are examined as filled contours over numerous sections or plans. Any distinct patterns are quickly discerned thereby readily identifying the best value to base the creation of a domain. These processes therefore provide a way to marry recent advances in software tools with what is supposed a geologist’s core skill: pattern recognition.CITATION:Juras, S, McKinley, S and Uludag, E, 2017. This progress report on a national survey of the use of detachable bits in metal mines covers 10 mines. It presents comparative costs for drilling with conventional and detachable bits, describes the reconditioning of drill steel, and gives various data on rock drilling at these particular mines. Reports to follow will include similar data on drilling at other metal mines in the United States. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This report is based on costs and data developed and furnished by the operators of the mines visited. Quality assurance of drilled shafts is highly dependent upon the construction practices used during the excavation and concrete placement process. When performed under slurry, challenges are presented in maintaining borehole stability and placing a uniform and continuous concrete column. An integral part of the construction operation is to evaluate the as-built integrity to verify the drilled shaft is capable of safely transferring the required loads to the subsurface. One such case is exemplified by a project involving the expansion of an existing public transit rail line. The expansion required the construction of a new bridge bent supported by seven 5-ft diameter drilled shafts of various lengths. The specifications for the project required both Cross-Hole Sonic Logging (CSL) and Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) for drilled shaft integrity evaluation. Both of these post-construction non-destructive tests (NDT) are designed to detect anomalies or the presence of regions with reduced concrete quality. However, the implementation and methodologies of performing each of these NDT methods are significantly different. Cross-Hole Sonic Logging uses ultrasonic signals emitted from a transmitter in one access tube to a receiver in another access tube. Thermal Integrity Profiling measures elevated concrete temperatures during the curing process using embedded thermal wires. Both test methods require different access details and therefore have different costs associated to the contractor or owner to perform. This paper provides a detailed comparison of these NDT methods as performed on these seven drilled shafts. The associated financial and time costs to perform each method are compared and the results are discussed in detail. INTRODUCTION Drilled shafts are a fundamental deep foundation element that can be designed to resist large bending moments as well as to transfer large compressive axial loads through weaker upper soils to competent soils or rock below. Often times when the upper soils are very soft, lateral support by casing or slurry, or a combination of both, may be used to hold back the softer soils from collapsing into the hole before concrete has been placed. Due to the blind nature of drilled shaft construction and the qualities issues that may arise during the placement process, it is essential for design engineers to specify non-destructive testing (NDT) to assess the quality of the as-built drilled shaft. CSL and TIP testing are two NDT methods designed to detect areas of lower quality concrete or soil inclusions throughout the length of the drilled shaft and determine its overall quality. Each method uses different technologies and methods to achieve the results required to determine the as-built condition of the drilled shaft.

The design of effective ground support requires a sound understanding of the pre-mining state of stress in the stratum to be mined. Irregularities in the stress field encountered during multiseam mining are governed primarily by the previous mining in the surrounding strata. The aim of this study is to quantify the effects of rock mass transverse isotropy on the vertical stress redistribution in the rock strata beneath supercritical longwall panels. Wilson?s equations for determining the stress distribution induced in and beyond a single longwall panel after it has been mined have been adopted, and a plane strain finite element analysis of an elastic medium, together with the stress changes predicted by Wilson, was used to calculate the final pre-mining stresses in the underlying strata. Values of the independent shear modulus (G¢) of the rock strata, ranging from 0.1 to 1 times the isotropic shear modulus (Giso) in the plane of the strata, and a Poisson?s ratio (?) of 0.25 have been investigated. The key finding of this study is that the predicted magnitude of vertical stress in the transversely isotropic strata beneath a mined supercritical longwall panel is larger and changes more quickly with horizontal distance than is the case for an isotropic rock mass. This finding is of significance for the design of ground support measures in multi-seam mining operations.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines Particulate Mineralogy Unit examined the habits of six zeolite minerals commonly occurring in domestic zeolite deposits. Mineral habit is of interest because current theory on the potential for sarcoma production in test animals emphasizes the size and shape of mineral particles, without regard to composition or structure. A scanning electron microscopic study revealed that, of these six minerals, only mordenite and erionite crystallized in acicular to fibrous habits, The fibrous varieties of these two minerals were characterized by size and shape on the transmission electron microscope, and their dimensions were compared with those of asbestos and amphibole cleavage fragments. When comminuted, these two minerals possess "fibrosity indices" similar to those of amphibole cleavage fragments. One sample, a rare woolly erionite, has uniform widths, large aspect ratios, and a "fibrosity index" similar to those of asbestos.
