For technology transfer to be successful a process, from research to full scale application, has to be followed. This paper describes such a process and how it is applied in practice. Some of the ?do?s? and ?don?ts? are highlighted. Recommendations are made on how to communicate existing knowledge and to ensure that a framework exists to effectively plan future projects with final technology transfer objectives firmly in place. In 1986 and 1987, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Bureau of Mines personnel studied 7,040 acres of the 7,240-acre Sheep Mountain Wilderness Study Area (OR-006-003) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The area studied is along the divide between the Snake River and Pine Creek about 1.5 mi south of the village of Oxbow in Baker County, OR. No mineral resources or mineral-related activities were identified in the Sheep Mountain study area. The basalt covering most of the study area has no known mineralized sites. However, it contains common agate and opal that is of limited interest to mineral collectors. This basalt (stone) could be used locally as construction material (crushed stone or fill); however, suitable material is wide spread in the region and more accessible to possible markets.

"To explore blast furnace slag as a secondary resource for rare earth elements (REEs), blast furnace slag containing lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), erbium (Er) and neodymium (Nd) in concentrations of 17, 16, 4 and 44 ppm, respectively, was processed with sulfuric acid while optimizing the parameters of acid concentration, temperature and pulp density. The experiments showed that recovery rates of 92, 36, 35 and 52 percent for La, Ce, Nd and Er, respectively, were achieved at 1 to 5 weight/volume (w/v) percent pulp density using particles smaller than 250 µm and treating with 1 M sulfuric acid for one hour at room temperature. Raising the temperature to 95 °C promoted the dissolutions of Ce and Nd to 89 and 84 percent, respectively, for the same 1 M acid concentration and one-hour duration at 5 w/v percent pulp density. Cyanex 923 was preferred over Cyanex 301 for the purification of REEs from leach liquor. In another route, the leach liquor was subjected to precipitation with 0.5 to 1 M oxalic acid, resulting in a product with 4 to 5 percent concentration of REEs.IntroductionRare earth elements (REEs) are important materials in numerous high-technology applications, but they have high supply risk, giving rise to the study of new sources. The recycling of REEs has been well researched, especially on a small scale, but has not been widely implemented. Less than 1 percent of REEs were recycled in 2011 (Binnemans et al., 2013). REEs occur in a large number of minerals in oxidic compounds, such as oxides, carbonates, phosphates and silicates, and are present as mixtures at 10 to 300 mg/kg concentrations in many rock formations, such as basalts, granites, gneisses, shales and silicate rocks. The most abundant REE in the Earth’s crust is cerium (Ce), at a concentration of 20 to 70 mg/kg, followed by neodymium (Nd) and lanthanum (La), with heavier REEs being less abundant (Binnemans et al., 2013). It is an honour to be invited as a speaker to this ICCR conference and a pleasure to be with you here in South Africa. I have been asked to talk about the competitiveness of coal versus other energy alternatives. Coal supplies nearly one-quarter of the global primary energy. Its most direct competitors are gas, nuclear and renewables. Oil is predominantly for transport fuels. Fuel oil is competitive with coal when crude is below its long-run average price and has some niche opportunities. But I will confine my comments to nuclear, renewables and particularly natural gas as the most potent current competitive threat to coal. Competitiveness is more than just cost and price; there is environmental acceptability, security or reliability and increasingly image. These factors are more of a spectrum than discrete issues. Dollars and cents remain the key issue for competitiveness but one must recognize the impact of politics in sustainable development and energy security.

This report, sponsored by the U.S. Bureau of mines, presents the results of an examination of available safety assessment methods and their applicability to the mining industry. Standard safety analysis procedures were evaluated for relevance to the mining industry and mire operators' needs. The major safety concerns and needs of mine operators were identified through telephone contacts and a visit to a mine site. Safety assessment methods recommended for use by the mining Industry were also investigated for potential adaptability to a user-interactive computer system. Several methods were determined to be Immediately transferrable to the mining industry; these techniques are described in a user's handbook produced as part of this project. The handbook gives detailed instructions on appropriate application and utilization of these methods. Other techniques will require further development before they can be effectively transferred to the mining Industry. These methods, their advantages, disadvantages and resource requirements are described in the final project report. Recommended system safety analysis techniques facilitate an evaluation of total mine system safety and a determination of safety-related interactions among systems within a mine. The application of these methods to the mining industry could result In reductions in both the frequency and the consequences of mine accidents.

Outsourcing of specialist and non-continuous services is common practice in international mining operations. There is an increasing trend towards this practice in South Africa as a result of the major organisational changes that have taken place in the industry, and as lower revenues and production cost pressures have reduced profit margins. Many specialist functions have been outsourced in the industry for a long time, an example being shaft sinking, which is undertaken by specialist shaft sinking contractors. In the professional services area, some activities have been outsourced, for example the design and construction supervision of tailings dams, but mining related activities such as geology, mine planning and scheduling, engineering, ventilation, and rock engineering, have traditionally been carried out by in-house staff. In this paper some of the industry problems which have led to an increase in outsourcing of professional services are considered. Then the pros and cons of outsourcing are dealt with before outlining the factors which should be taken into account in choosing an outsourcing partner.

"It is well known that gas injection systems can exhibit a wide range of dynamical behaviours, ranging from linear periodic bubbling through to highly complex turbulent jetting. Recently, it has been observed that an important intermediate regime exists under certain system conditions, where the dynamics are complex in nature yet predictable for short time periods. This paper reviews the evidence to support the above hypothesis, and discusses the invariant quantitative measures such as density, return maps, Lyapunov exponent and dimension which may be used as pattern recognition features in a mOnitoring and control strategy.INTRODUCTIONThere has been a great deal of research on the submerged injection of gases into liquids. This interest is primarily due to the large number of applications in the pyrometallurgical and chemical engineering industries. Gases are typically injected into liquids to achieve goals such as heat and mass transfer, or physical mixing and agitation. Only recently though has the possibility of using the evolution of the gas dynamics as a probe to internal system conditions been raised [1, 2].At very low gas injection rates and small upstream chamber volumes, gas normally disperses in the form of stable bubbles of constant volume [3]. With increases in gas flow rate, the dynamics become more complex, bifurcating into double bubbling, multiple bubbling and complex coalescence behaviour. Irregularities measured in pressuretime series acquired upstream of the injection port under these complex conditions have usually been treated as bothersome noise or contamination to be filtered from the signal and ignored in the analysis. These irregularities, however, may contain physically interesting and useful information on the system from which they were produced if the system may be classified as deterministically chaotic [4]."

"In 1973 Brenda Mines Limited first investigated the potential use of a process computer to aid in the development of a control system for the concentrator grinding circuit. This initial study and its results are reviewed (1) in a previous paper.Since that time the computer system and its applications have been expanded. After the initial success of grinding circuit control, a second process computer was purchased to function as a back-up device. The two processors are currently operated in a foreground-background mode which allows extensive use of the computing facility for engineering and development work as well as operator training.Because of the relative ease of expansion, the computer has been incorporated into a flotation control system as well as an electrical peak power savings program.It is the purpose of this paper to review the successful application:; of the process computer and to indicate applications which are envisaged for the future."

The NASA Lewis Research Center, under U.S. Bureau of Mines program direction, performed an assessment of alternative mobile power sources for mining applications. A wide variety of heat engines and energy systems was initially examined to ascertain which could be considered as potential alternatives to presently used power systems. The present mobile power systems are electrical trailing cable, electrical battery, and diesel - with diesel being largely limited in the United States to noncoal mines. Each candidate power source was evaluated in terms, of the following requirements: (1) Ability to achieve the duty cycle (2) Ability to meet Government regulations (MSHA certification) (3) Availability (production readiness) (4) Market availability (5) Packaging capability An initial screening reduced the list of candidates to the following: (1) Diesel (2) Stirling (3) Gas turbine (4) Rankine (steam) (5) Advanced electric (batteries) (6) Mechanical energy storage (flywheel) (7) Use of hydrogen evolved from metal hydrides This list of candidates was divided into two classes of alternative power sources for mining applications - heat engines and energy storage systems. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) have been used for more than 20 years to grind iron ore pellet feed. Besides coarse comminution (crushing), where HPGR are installed upstream of the ball mill, there are numerous flow sheets where HPGR are used after ball milling and dewatering for re- or finish grinding.There is a clear growing interest in grinding of pellet feed with HPGR during the last few years. In addition to their known advantages of low specific energy consumption, high availability, low steel consumption and improved pelletising processes the lower environmental load (reduced or no water consumption) became a strong driving factor for the application of HPGR in pellet feed grinding.This growing demand increases the interest in better understanding of the HPGR grinding process with fine iron ore concentrates. One of the most important process parameters is the moisture content of the feed material which influences the performance of the HPGR enormously. The HPGR can react to fluctuations of the fresh feed properties to a certain degree by adjusting grinding force and roller speed. Nevertheless, there are limitations by the physics of the compression process and the capability of water absorption by the concentrate. The capability varies for different concentrates and different specific surface areas. This fact has to be considered during engineering of the beneficiation plant.The paper focuses on the influence of feed moisture content on the HPGR performance in view of throughput, increase of Blaine number and process stability on the basis of numerous pilot plant tests, modelling results and industrial experiences.CITATION:Heinicke, F, Günter, H and Hunger, P, 2017. A continuous mining machine was redesigned for the installation of an integrated illumination system. The illumination system was designed by first calculating the theoretical number of luminaires required to meet the Federal Illumination Standards. Luminaires initially were placed using isointensity diagrams. A darkroom was used for "fine tuning" and demonstrating that the system met the illumination requirements. The luminaire mounts were installed on a machine underground. The performance of this illumination system was monitored in the working environment of an operating coal mine. Design changes were made as necessary during this evaluation period to improve the system.

Economic gold mineralisation was discovered at Round Hill by Homestake NZ Limited in 1984 and was subsequently put into production by Macraes Mining Company Limited (MMCL) in 1990. The total mineral resource in 1990 was estimated at 41.4 Mt @ 1.42 glt at a 0.7g/t cut off, for 1.8 Moz of gold. Since project start up the mill has been upgraded twice to increase throughput and reached its current capacity of 3.2 Mtpa. At 31 December 1996, a total of 16.2 Mt of ore at average grade of 1.73 g/t has been excavated, yielding 655,000 oz of gold. MMCL began exploration along the Hyde Macraes Shear Zone in 1994. Since 1994, exploration has been successful with the discovery of over 3.5 Moz of gold. The resource now stands at 110 Mt @ 1.46 g/t gold for 5.1 Moz. This success has led to a planned expansion of the processing capacity to 9 Mtpa with the building of a new 6 Mtpa processing plant.

"The demand for energy has continued to rise worldwide in line with population growth. The majority of South Africa’s electricity is supplied by coal-fired power stations. The amount of fine coal (-2 mm) generated at coal processing plants has increased, due mainly to mechanized mining methods. Fine coal retains more water, which lowers its heating value.Drying the coal is costly and it is difficult to achieve the required moisture content. Consequently, coal fines are often discarded. An estimated 8% of the total energy value of mined coal is lost1.Fluidized bed technology is often used to dry coal thermally, but this method is expensive and has an adverse environmental impact. The objective of this study was to investigate the removal of moisture from fine coal (<2 mm) in a fluidized bed operated with dry fluidizing air at moderate temperatures as the drying agent. The effects of different air temperatures and relative humidity levels were investigated in a controlled environment. The study further investigated the influence of coal particle size on moisture removal.The drying rate was found to increase with increasing temperature. The relative humidity of the drying air had a more pronounced effect on the drying rate, even at temperatures as low as 25°C.. It became more challenging to remove moisture as the particle size decreased. The gain in calorific value was greater than the energy required to dry the coal samples, showing that a fluidized bed using moderately warm dry air is an energy-efficient drying technology. The mould flux plays a crucial role in the continuous casting operation of steel due to its multi-functional assignment as lubricator and heat flux controller. In reality, the commercial fluxes can fall short of the expectations of the operator. In such cases, the performance of the mould flux reduces production throughput in the casting machine. This paper presents the results of a study of two different commercial mould fluxes in continuous casting of steels. The results of online sampling during casting, as well as off-line measurements in the laboratory, are presented. Mould flux powder and slag samples from the caster have been characterized with respect to melting behaviour, interfacial tension and thermal diffusivity, using various measuring techniques. An experimental technique has been developed in order to simulate the melting behaviour of a flux in the mould, which has been found to be useful for qualitative studies. A cross-sectional view of different powders reveals that up to four different material layers may exist in the bed: a loosely packed powder layer, sintered layer, semi-solid layer and liquid slag layer. It is found that the melting rate of the mould flux is dependent on the liquid slag layer thickness. Thus, in a continuous casting operation the melting rate is likely to be non-uniform with position in mould due to the difference in liquid slag layer thickness. Mould slag composition is found to be influenced by the starting powder for as long as 30 min, representing a large part of the first heat casting time. Would you believe me if I told you the constant battle between Government regulatory agencies and industry could be won by both sides? No, I&apos;m not crazy, nor have I been soaking up any of that fine Kentucky whitelightning. But I have recently been a participant in a battle where both sides won. Actually, I&apos;m using the term "battle" loosely because, in reality, it wasn&apos;t a battle at all - despite the fact that all the ingredients were there for a monumental struggle; i.e.. government, industry, special interest groups and a controversial issue - the development of effluent limitations. I&apos;d like to tell you about it. Historically, on one side of the battle, government has always been ac¬cused of adopting regulations with limited evaluation of existing technologies; and then with seemingly no regard for the economic consequences. On the other side, industry gets punished by government&apos;s harsh actions because of their past "do-nothing" attitude toward pollution control. Recently, this battle seems to be losing steam, because both government and industry are beginning to realize that, ultimately, they both will lose. Even more important is the fact that both sides are, or should be, working for industrial expansion compatible with environmental protection.

El presente texto señala los factores que han influenciado el comportamiento de los precios de los metales no ferrosos desde el fin de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Tras la finalización de este periodo bélico, se dio una inflación que afectó los niveles de precios de todos los productos, alterándose los costos de cuatro de los ocho metales no-ferrosos en la industria minera peruana. Para ello, se realiza un estudio comparativo de los precios estipulados durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial con los precios vigentes al 31 de octubre de 1969. Asimismo se analiza los problemas básicos de oferta y de demanda, encontrándose que la demanda es mayor a la oferta, pese al descubrimiento de nuevas reservas del mineral. En consecuencia, tanto el avance científico y tecnológico como el desarrollo de la competencia son factores de importancia en la tasa de mercado actual que necesitan evaluarse constantemente.

The current Stoilensky magnetite concentrator comprises a three-stage crushing circuit followed by three stages of ball milling, grinding and concentration to produce a magnetite concentrate with 66.5% iron (Fe). The plant is built in four lines, three lines having four mills and one line with five mills, to treat 32 Mt/y of ore and produce 13.9 Mt/y of concentrate.NLMK, the owner, is Russia’s third largest steel maker and while the ore from the Stoilensky Mining and Beneficiation Plant (SGOK) provides the bulk of their supply, they still must buy ore from external sources at world prices. A decision was taken to expand the SGOK operation to supply all the NLMK concentrate, including the production of pellets.To commence the expansion, high pressure grinding rolls (HPGRs) were introduced as a fourth stage of crushing ahead of the first ball mill. This was a relatively low capital cost expansion and increased production by 12 to 15%, the cost being much less than an additional grinding line. The importance of this development was that earlier introductions of HPGRs in Russia had presented several problems so there was some reluctance to the initial concept. The even greater significance was that nearly every magnetite plant in Russia had a three-stage crushing circuit so the successful introduction of HPGRs was of interest to many operators.The design was developed by a team, consisting of Worley Parson, Mineralconsult and PiterGORproject (PGP), for the first four units to fit inside existing building structures. The first two units were commissioned in March 2016 and the next two units in May 2016, and production improved by over 12%. Multiple seam mining and its associated problems are very serious in Southern West Virginia where poor planning or lack of knowledge in seam interaction often results in complete loss of coal properties. Several measures have been proposed to alleviate the interaction prob¬lems under various multiple seam conditions, but few of them are spec¬ific in terms of mining plan. Two parallel approaches are adopted for this paper. One is field investigation which consists mainly of mine site visits and gathering of data. The other is the two-dimensional finite element simulation of mine workings using the data gathered as input. Two typical cases which represent the past and present multi¬ple seam mining practice in West Virginia were investigated. Much attention is focused on the interaction problems experienced and the important parameters controlling interaction. Several key parameters controlling interaction in multiple seam mining were analyzed. Proper mining plans, by which the interaction problems can be minimized, are proposed for the individual cases after a better understanding of the interaction mechanism was realized through finite element analyses.
